Merry and Bright Season’s Greetings! This is my favorite time of year because families get together to celebrate. I love the holidays, decorations, yummy food, and seeing the excitement of children. No matter what holiday you celebrate, it’s always good to be with family. One of my most memorable traditions growing up was when my friends and I would go to local soup kitchens as volunteers to help cook and serve food to those in need. Read, Get In on the Giving by Renee Haines to find out how and where you can help those in need during this holiday season. One great tradition you can pass on to your children is teaching them to serve others during the holiday season. If you’ve ever had questions about foster care or adoption, Jessa McClure will help answer them in her article, You Never Outgrow the Need for a Family. It may not be as difficult, scary, or expensive as you thought to bless a child by bringing them into your home; whether temporarily or permanently. Music therapy is an expressive therapy that can help people with a wide range of physical and mental health issues. Check out, The Magic of Music Therapy by Yvonne Vasquez to learn more about how music might be beneficial to you or someone you know. Learn about The Important Benefits of Tummy Time in Rebecca Asher’s article. Rebecca discusses why it’s important to make sure your baby has tummy time, how to make sure your baby is safe while they sleep, and other useful tips for parents.
Wishing you all Happy Holidays!

The Flu Fight The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) reminds the community to get their flu vaccine as early as possible. Everyone six months old and older should get vaccinated. People age 65 and older, pregnant women, young children and those with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease or kidney and liver disorders are more susceptible to serious influenza complications. The latest available data from the Metro Health flu surveillance network showed that mostly flu A is circulating in our community. So far, no pediatric deaths have been reported in Bexar and its surrounding counties for this season.
The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District recommends a three step approach to protect yourself and others from the flu: ■■ Get a flu vaccine. ■■ Wash hands often and maintain good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs, including covering your cough and sneeze with a tissue, your arm or sleeve. ■■ If you get the flu, complete all medication doses prescribed by your doctor and stay home.

Get in on the Giving How kids can team up for good causes By Renee Haines
‘Tis the season for supporting good causes, and some kids already know that teamwork can make a bigger difference than acting alone to help the most folks in need. They have joined forces to roll up their sleeves for hands-on help days at local nonprofit organizations and led fundraising drives to contribute dollars to worthy causes. “The Children’s Shelter in San Antonio has benefited from child-led fundraisers,” says Anais Miracle, vice president of external affairs. “At birthday parties, children and their families have asked that guests bring donations or diapers instead of presents,” she says. These donations help a shelter that provides a safe haven for infants and children up to age 16 who must leave their homes because of abandonment, abuse or neglect. “We’ve had a lot of children who have done donation drives,” she says. “The kids come in with their families to bring the donations. The parents are so proud, and the kids are proud.” 8
Our Kids Magazine | December 2015
Even small donations collected by kids can go a long way. “For example, $25 can buy formula or baby food for three days at our emergency shelter,” Miracle says. A gift of $250 can buy diapers for the emergency shelter for two days. Non-cash gifts are welcome, too. The shelter’s holiday season wish list includes Huggies or Pampers brand diapers and toddler pull-ups, as well as children’s socks and underwear. For more information, visit www. ChildrensShelter.org or call 210-212-2536. At Sarah Roberts French Home, a nonprofit San Antonio nursing home that has served mostly impoverished elderly women for more than 60 years, “we welcome donations to help provide a loving, caring environment for our residents during the holidays and throughout the year,” says Barbara Duelm, executive director and administrator. “Local families can help by enlisting friends and FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
neighbors to raise funds to help pay for new kitchen equipment, new room furnishings and more. It’s a wonderful way for younger members of our community to support the oldest members of our community in need,” Duelm says. Earlier this year, 60 high school students at San Antonio’s School of the Americas pitched in for a day by washing windows, painting a storage shed and visiting residents at the home. Families and organizations are welcome to contact the home with holiday fundraising ideas. To learn more, visit www.SarahRoberts.org or call (210) 736-4238. Haven for Hope in San Antonio provides shelter and services to hundreds of homeless individuals and families in need each year. The shelter needs new towels, baby cribs and sheets this winter. Cash donations can also make a big difference. Just $25 can purchase a birthday package for monthly birthday celebrations for kids on the Haven for Hope campus, says director of external relations Laura Calderon. A children’s fundraiser that collects $50 can buy baby supplies for a new mom, Calderon says. A $250 gift can send a child who is homeless to summer camp for two weeks, and $500 can buy start-up furniture for a family that has found a new home. For more information, visit www. HavenforHope.org or call 210-220-2163.
Here are 24 more ways to get in on the giving this holiday season: Any Baby Can assists families with infants and children through age 17 years of age who have a chronic illness, disability or developmental delay. The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate a small percentage of the purchase price to your selected charitable organization. For more information about Any Baby Can, visit www. AnyBabyCanSA.org or call 210-227-0170. The Arc of San Antonio for more than 60 years has served children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Visit www.Arc-SA.org, or call 210-490-4300 for how-to information about hosting a holiday fundraiser. Assistance League of San Antonio served more than 70,000 people last year, including kids, families and seniors. Families can help with a financial contribution or donations of books for kids and household items for the Assistance League Thrift House. Shopping at the Thrift House will contribute to the organization’s major source of funding. For more information, call 210-732-1200 or visit www. AssistanceLeagueSA.org. ‘You Never Outgrow the Need for a Family’ Find out if becoming an adoptive parent is right for you and how to get started By Jessa McClure
The holiday season is approaching and many in Bexar County will be packing up and heading toward the loving arms and food-filled homes of their family members. But for more than 1300 kids in the county, the holidays are just another reminder that they do not yet have a forever home. These children are part of the state’s foster care system, and have waited days, months and sometimes years to be part of a family. If you’ve ever wondered if adoption is right for you, John Lennan, Region 11 Media Specialist from the Texas Department of Families and Protective Services said it is never too late to get started. “One of the first steps in becoming a foster-to-adopt parent is to attend one of our public information meetings,” Lennan said. “The meetings are free, and there’s no obligation. If you’re interested, great, but if not, then you can at least take away some information that you could pass onto someone else.” These meetings give an overview of what you can expect when taking a foster child into your home, and the requirements for becoming a foster-to-adopt parent.
Every prospective parent must:
■■Be at least 21 years of age, financially stable, and a respon-
sible, mature adult
■■Complete an application ■■Share information regarding their background and lifestyle ■■Provide references
14
Our Kids Magazine | December 2015
■■Show proof of marriage or divorce ■■Agree to a home study ■■Complete a criminal history background check and
abuse/neglect check
■■Attend free training to learn about issues of abused and
neglected children
“The training provides an opportunity for the family and DFPS to assess whether foster care or adoption is best for the family,” Lennan said. “The family may withdraw from the meetings at any time, and foster and adoptive parents generally train together.” Although the prospective parent or parents must show proof of marriage or divorce, Lennan said prospective foster or foster-to-adopt parents do not have to be married. He said that is one of the big myths related to foster care. One of the other big misconceptions is that adopting from the foster care system is costly. “When you adopt from the state of Texas, there are very few costs or fees that you encounter,” he said. The majority of the expenses associated with adopting through the foster care system have to do with creating a safe home for the children you adopt.
In addition to the basic requirements, foster parents must also: ■■Have adequate sleeping space
FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
■■Complete fire, health and safety inspections of the home ■■Vaccinate all pets ■■Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification ■■Obtain TB testing as required by the local Health
Department
But even if you have to pay for all of these requirements, you will make it all back tenfold if the child you adopt gets accepted to college. “The state of Texas does what’s called the Tuition Waiver Program,” Lennan said. “If you adopt a child from the state of Texas and that child qualifies to get into college—they have the grades, SAT scores, etc.—they will have their tuition waived at any state school. This also goes for junior colleges and trade schools. That is huge for a lot of families to be able to provide that type of opportunity.” Many of the more than 1,300 children waiting to be adopted are pictured as part of the San Antonio Heart Gallery. Prospective parents can peruse the list and see which child might be a great addition to their family. “The Heart Gallery was founded by the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department in 2001 as a way to help foster children in protective custody who are waiting for adoptive families step from the shadows into the light,” Lennan said. “Stirring portraits revealing the children’s amazing spirits and individuality have helped many of them find loving homes.”
The San Antonio Heart Gallery can be found on the Texas DFPS website at www.dfps.state.tx.us. Although there are many older children available for adoption through the foster care system, there are also many infants who need a loving forever home available through private adoption agencies. Going through an agency can come with a higher price tag, but Mariah Fink, communications director for the Adoption Alliance, said that client services representatives can help prospective adoptive parents navigate the sometimes daunting adoption process. “Agencies help relieve some of the stress for adoptive parents,” she said. “There are so many forms to fill out and so many steps in the process that it can become really overwhelming for someone who’s just doing it on their own. We’re there to make sure that they’re filling out correct paperwork and sticking to timelines and following sequential steps in the process.” Whether you decide to adopt through the foster care system or a private agency, bringing a parentless child into your home will not only change your life, but the child’s as well. “Every child deserves a home,” Lennan said. “And one thing that we’ve seen over and over again is that you never outgrow the need for a family.” Jessa McClure is a freelance writer, blogger, wife and mother of two.

Baby
The Important Benefits of
Tummy Time by Rebecca Asher
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies sleep on their backs instead of their tummies to help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In 1992, the Back to Sleep campaign was initiated and funded by the US National Institute of Child Health Development (NICHD), whose primary purpose was to educate parents about the dangers of SIDS. Since the program launched, the incidents of SIDS declined by more than 50 percent. Today, the campaign is called Safe to Sleep and is celebrating 20 years of educating parents and caregivers about how to provide their baby a safe sleep environment. Because of the recommendation by so many pediatricians for babies to sleep on their back, it is now important for infants to have some time spent on their tummies to help strengthen and develop their core muscles.
Why playtime on the tummy is beneficial
Tummy time helps in the process of developing the baby’s skull correctly by providing an alternate position. Babies spend most of their day on their backs in car seats and cribs, which can lead to developing plagiocephaly (flattened head from positioning). Tummy time helps a baby develop control of his or her head and helps the body prepare for rolling, crawling and pulling up. Sanjie Garza-Cox, MD, Mednax Neonatology at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio recommends, “Infants should begin by spending a few awake moments on his or her tummy on mother’s lap. Then progress as tolerated to a
16
Our Kids Magazine | December 2015
total of 30-minutes per day by the time they are 4-months old. As the baby continues to develop, he or she should continue to spend tummy time for longer periods of time while the parent plays with the child.” The benefits of infant tummy time will help in the following ways: ■■Strengthening and developing muscles needed for crawling. ■■Learning fine motor skills by engaging with toys. ■■Developing coordination.
The best tummy positions for mom and baby
Babies don’t always like being on their tummy and may fuss. If this is the case, make sure your infant is comfortable, but try to avoid placing your baby on his or her tummy after eating to avoid spitting up and other discomforts. The best practices include the following the three easy steps: ■■Eye level — Be on the floor with your baby at their eye level so they can see you and hear you. ■■Engagement — Have soft toys nearby your baby can reach for to increase strength in the shoulders and neck area. Play mats and activity centers are available at all major retailers. ■■Entertainment — Interact with your baby by singing or softly clapping and make tummy time an enjoyable experience. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
“Think of tummy time as baby’s first exercise, any amount is better than none,” advises Dionne Franco, M.D., a pediatrician at Northeast Pediatrics in San Antonio. “A baby should spend at least five supervised minutes on their tummy, three times a day, but every little bit helps.”
Tummy Time Alternatives “Babies with G-tubes or belly surgery will have to be cleared by their doctor prior to spending time on their tummy. Once cleared, usual careful supervised tummy time can resume. Occasionally, tummy time has to be limited to the parents’ lap or chest until the area of concern has healed,” said Dr. Garza-Cox. Another alternative to tummy time is to consider babywearing, where the parent or caregiver uses a wrap, sling or other soft-structured carriers to provide comfortable support for the baby. A carrier will enable an infant to sit up, which will engage the core muscles and aid in head and neck development. It will also help to alleviate any flat spot on the baby’s head.

Whether your baby’s crib is in your room or their own room, the crib mattress sheet should fit securely and there should not be any bumper coverings that could hinder breathing. Car seats are recommended while in a vehicle, but they should never be used inside the crib. Finally, bedsharing can lead to a baby being smothered and should be avoided.

Rule of thumb SIDS continues to be a major concern for infants through 6-months of age. “Remember, back to sleep, tummy to play. While tummy time is great for baby’s strength building when awake, the only safe sleeping position is for a baby to be face up,” recommends Dr. Franco. Tip: Inform all parents and caregivers about the benefits of tummy time and the correct sleeping position for nap and bed times. Dr. Garza-Cox advises, “It is recommended for the baby to be supervised at all times, but specifically when doing tummy time. When a baby is facing down, the breathing pipe is located underneath the esophagus. If the infant throws up, it would be very difficult for the baby to clear his or her airway. In addition, infants have a high risk of suffocation when lying on their tummy as their neck and back muscles are not strong enough to keep them from burying their face in bedding. Placing babies on their backs to sleep has reduced Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Always, back to sleep, tummy to play.” Rebecca Asher is a freelance writer for various media outlets and co-author of The Conflicted American. Her essay, Take a Breath is published in the soon-to-be released Eat Pray Love Made Me Do It anthology by Elizabeth Gilbert also next spring. Rebecca is a mother of two small girls, Sara (3) and Charley (18 months) and currently lives in San Antonio.

The Magic of Music Therapy is a Wonder to Behold By Yvonne Vasquez
For centuries, music has played a significant role in most civilizations. Music can be the simple sound of a baby rattle accompanied by clapping hands. It can also be an angelic chorus or a sophisticated symphony. Over the years, melodic notes have evolved into a world of beauty that knows no bounds. In reality, music is an art form that is sometimes hard to capture in one definition because it can be interpreted in so many different ways. For most of us, it is simply a wonderful stress reliever that brings us joy and helps us relax. But one thing is certain; beyond its obvious charms, music is now helping more people than ever before through the use of music therapy. For so many, in fact, it is so much more than just something to entertain us. It is downright life-changing! The connection between music and well-being has long been recognized in history. Many of our wellknown philosophers wrote about the favorable effects of music on mental and physical health. Indigenous tribes have traditionally used music for inspiration and healing. It was during and after both World Wars when doctors and clinicians first began discovering its therapeutic effects. As traveling musicians would visit veterans in hospitals, these patients would respond quite positively, both physically and emotionally. Soon it became clear that more training was needed 18

to optimally leverage this breakthrough. Over time, colleges and universities began to include music therapy as part of their curriculum. Thankfully, students who choose this field of study today have a multitude of options. Several organizations have been formed with the intention of strengthening this profession at various levels. One of them, the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), serves to unite the profession. AMTA has been supporting this field by promoting specialized education, furthering access to services and increasing awareness of music therapy since 1998. What makes this kind of therapy so unique is that listening to music and sound engages all centers of the brain at the same time, unlike other forms of therapy. For this reason, music can promote cognitive functioning and improve speech and language skills. “Music allows for global learning because it is an all-brain activity that teaches in ways that other kinds of therapy cannot,” explains Stefanie Anderson Eckert, who has a Master of Music and is Music Therapist-Board Certified of A-Z Music Therapy Services. “It stimulates and activates the brain for faster learning and longer retention.” She explained that music is the only thing that can be used to retrain the non-damaged areas of the brain because it helps the brain compensate for the impaired FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
function. Her client base includes children and adults with a wide range of disabilities or illnesses. “Music is so powerful and all encompassing,” says Eckert. “It has an appeal that surpasses race, gender, age and nationality.” She often incorporates children’s music into the mix and has found that strong rhythms or recurring melodies are the most successful. Some of the conditions Eckert has worked with include special needs clients with autism and Down’s Syndrome. She has also used music therapy to help grieving children cope with the death of a loved one. One of the most remarkable ways music can help is by building language and listening skills. Adults and children with brain injuries have shown dramatic improvement, especially in the area of speech, through the use of music therapy. In the case of children with cerebral palsy, for example, musical beats can help stimulate areas of the brain that help them focus, coordinate movements, improve speech and reduce muscle tension. Similarly, emotionally disturbed children often respond positively to the rhythmic methods of music therapy because music is fun, non-threatening and extremely motivational. These children may also have other conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This type of therapy can strengthen self-control, reinforce social skills and enhance focus. “Play is an important part of the experience, along with learning impulse control and improving selfesteem,” says occupational therapist Jorge Ochoa of Tambo Rhythms. Although he is not professionally trained in music therapy, his company provides several options for those seeking to reap the benefits of music using drums and percussion. Many elements that give meaning to a person’s life fit within the therapeutic realm of occupational therapy, including social participation, personal development and attention skills, Ochoa noted. He has offered various programs such as drumming classes and percussion activities through schools, churches, music stores and community organizations such as Eva’s Heroes. Treatment plans are based on the specific needs of an individual client. Some children may require assistance to alleviate stress while others might have trouble communicating in traditional ways. Not all insurance plans cover the treatment, but many of them do. “It’s great to see the impact this has made on children. It is not always evident to me, but teachers and family members have often described positive behavioral changes in a child after these sessions,” says Ochoa. It may not mean much to the average person, but to a family who has been desperate to hear their child speak their first word or see them engage with others in a social setting, this huge breakthrough can mean everything when nothing else has worked for them. Looking Ahead to January
The 23rd Annual Valero Alamo Bowl is set for January 2 and the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is January 9, both at the Alamodome. The All-American Bowl showcases the nation’s top high school football players and a week of festivities leads up to the big game day. On January 18, one of the largest people’s marches in the country will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the annual March and Rally. Other events in his honor throughout the city include a rally, art exhibits, workshops and candlelight vigils.
