Spring Break is slowing creeping up on us; and then, before you know it, summer will be here. It’s never too early to prepare and know who is going to watch our kids when they are off from school. It’s a good idea to do some research on camps and after-school programs now in order to avoid scrabbling at the last minute. Check out this month’s camp directory and read our overnight camp story “Preparing a Happy Camper” by Christa Melnyk Hines. Then, come and meet camp representatives in person and see what they have to offer at our 19th Annual Our Kids Magazine Camp Fair which is set for March 1, 2015 at the Alzafar Shrine Auditorium from 1pm to 4pm. If you are like me and have to plan a birthday party for a kiddo in February or maybe in the next couple of months, it can become a bit overwhelming. Although having your party at home may save you some money, having it somewhere else my save you some time, stress and headaches. For tips and ideas on having the perfect party away from home, skip on over to our party directory and read “Birthday Fun Zones Away From Home” by Christina Katz. Last month, we spoke about the different kinds of births option a mother has available. This month, we focus on preparing your home to be safe for the arrival of your newborn. Soon your little one will be crawling around the house and exploring his strange, new world. While baby dangers vary from home to home, new parents can get started reading “Must-Dos When Baby Proofing Your House,” a list compiled by Dr. Gruen from Village Pediatrics.

Growing up, the words “I love you” were not uttered out loud often, if ever, in my household. Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of love from my parents; from guidance regarding life lessons, to concerns over my health when I was sick, and words of encouragement when I needed them. And often, Magazine just by doing their best to provide for their children’s every need, my parents showed us their love. Whether you are a parent who never became accustomed to saying these 3 little syllables or if you tell your kids you love them all the time, I hope you enjoy reading “28 Ways to Say I Love You” by Gayla Grace, as much as I did. Sometimes actions speak louder than words.

A night on the town awaits one lucky “SuperMom” Just about every mother is a “SuperMom,” but few have super hero names . . . until now. The Institute for Women’s Health is sponsoring an online contest where mothers can find out their SuperMom name and be entered for a chance at a night out worth $250. “We wanted to recognize the great work of so many SuperMoms who make our city so great,” said Estefania Arguellas, an IFWH spokeswoman.
The contest is simple and free to enter. • Visit www.ifwh.org/supermom/ to enter to win. • Fill out the form • Include the mother’s and a child’s name • The SuperMom name is created using the first initial of the mother’s name and the first initial of the child’s name. The contest runs through Feb. 15, 2015. There’s only one entry allowed per household. The winner will be chosen at random from the online entries.’

Simple Ways to Show Your Kids Love By Gayla Grace
Your kids know you love them, right? I’m sure they could still use a few extra strokes or simple reminders of how important they are to you. Try some new ways this month to say “I love you.” Surprise them with a new game on Saturday morning. Enjoy donuts and hot chocolate while learning to play the game. Be sure to include the whole family.
1. 2.
Tell them the story of their birth. Show pictures of how they looked as a newborn and talk about who came to visit in the beginning. Make sure they know how excited you were when they entered your life.
3. 4.
Love them despite their faults. Offer them grace freely and often.
Find a unique quality about your child and praise him for it. Whether it’s a sensitive spirit toward a sibling or a quick-to-forgive gesture toward friends, tell him how it makes him special.
5.
Indulge in a child-specific treat and enjoy some oneon-one time together. Ask for input and make plans ahead so your child knows it’s a special occasion.
6.
Compliment your child in front of another adult. Be specific with an example of good behavior as you beam with pride.
7.
Praise their efforts, not just results. Don’t expect perfection on every chore or straight-A’s on every report card. Let them know you notice when they do their best.
12

8. 9. 10. 11.
Let them pick their favorite book and read to them, even when you don’t want to.
Play outside together on a cold day. Make snow angels. Go sledding one more time.
Accompany them to walk the dog. Ask about their day at school or a budding friendship. Listen more than you talk.
other.
Allow them to be messy. Play with finger paints and play-doh. Go outside and spray silly string on each
12. 13. 14.
Display their artwork on your refrigerator or window. Talk about what a great job they did and how you love to look at it every day. Put a surprise in their lunch. Include a note that says, “I love you.”
Get off social media and completely tune in when they’re talking. Refrain from multi-tasking and focus on their needs.
15.
Patiently help with homework. Don’t raise your voice when you have to explain it one more time.

February Field Trip Theme
Ask for their ideas when you plan your next vacation. Look at fun places to visit on the computer and dream together about future trips. Sit under the stars and talk about the beauty of the cosmos.
Take off your serious hat and make them laugh. Tell jokes or watch a funny movie together. Tickle them until they cry. Offer a no-rules day. Let your kids stay in their pj’s all day and eat and play whatever they want.
Ask your child to sing to you. Join in and finish the song as a duet. Let your child know you love hearing her beautiful voice. Surprise them with a simple gift through the mail such as a comic book, a glow-in-the-dark pencil, or their favorite player’s card. Include a note of “I love you.”
22. 23.
Make s’mores around the fire pit or roast marshmallows in the fireplace. Include a cup of hot cocoa or favorite beverage with it.

PARTY DIRECTORY
Birthday Fun ZonHeos me Away From
By Christina Katz
One simple strategy will minimize birthday party preparation, clean up, and costs-having your birthday party somewhere else besides your home. Any birthday party can get expensive, and you might think that having a party away from home would double the cost. But believe it or not, the amount you spend often goes down, not up, when you have the party away from home. Consider the full package deal offered by a party venue before you consider doing it all yourself. Once you factor in all the food, favors, and serving items you won’t have to buy, you just might save yourself a bundle of time, energy, and headaches by going with the package deal. Get the details on exactly what will be provided in advance, so you don’t duplicate any efforts when filling in the gaps. If the venue does not cover every detail, this can work fine. Bring the cake? No problem. Order a few 14

pizzas? Easy. Bring some goody bags? If that’s all you have to do for this party, you are going to love it. Some of your favorite birthday party memories may end up coming from the party where you did the least work. You send the invites, show up, and watch everyone go home with big smiles on their faces. No smile will be as big as the one you have on your face when you return to your nice, clean home. Here is a run-down of birthday party venues that often host parties away from home. Before you write off any candidates, be sure to search online and call to double check. Birthday parties are big business, and businesses often add birthday party hosting after opening day, once services are established. So, go ahead, ask your friends and neighbors for ideas, but remember, nothing beats being the first family on the block to discover a cool new party zone no other family has tried yet. CAMP DIRECTORY
Preparing Happy Campers By Christa Melnyk Hines
18
Our Kids Magazine | February 2015
Summer camp is a time-honored tradition rich with activities, newfound friendships and a lifetime of memories. Explore a few ways to make your child’s camp experience smooth sailing from start to finish. S’more Than Just Fun According to the RAND Corporation, a non-profit research organization, children who participate in summer programs, like experiential learning activities offered in an organized camp, are less likely to experience a significant summer learning slide. Camp also enhances a child’s physical and emotional well-being. Activities build social skills, teamwork and independence, which all contribute to stronger self-confidence and leadership abilities. “I often hear from parents how amazed they are when their children return home after spending time at camp....about how they seem older and more mature,” says Doug Berkel, senior program director of Youth Development Services with the Kansas City YMCA. Avoid Camp Run Amok First, together with your child, decide what skills you want your child to gain and choose a camp that fits her needs and interests, as well as your family’s values. Check out safety guidelines in the camp’s parent handbook. Look for overnight camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). “ACA standards are the most universal and well-known standards adopted by most camps to ensure a quality and safe program,” Berkel says. Day and specialty camps should carry a current state childcare license. Additionally, staff should be trained in emergency, communication and safety procedures, behavior management techniques (including handling the common bout of homesickness), and child abuse prevention. Camp Sunshine Day camps are a practical way to introduce children, ages five to 12, to the camp experience. Most center on a theme, like sports, science, nature, technology and the arts. Ann Bowley says that when her stepson, Trevor, was younger, he enjoyed planning out the day camps he wanted to attend each summer. However, as her son got older he grew more apprehensive about starting over with a new group of kids each week. “We talked to him about it and he never changed his plans. We just looked for school mates FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
CAMP DIRECTORY that might be in camp with him to help him be more comfortable,” she says. Camp Ability Specialty camps center around one activity like music, art, sports or science. These camps provide children the space to further explore and develop a skill that interests them. “Specialty camps tend to run...partial days and could be a nice addition to regular day camps,” Berkel says. Camp Starlight Overnight camps, typically in an outdoor setting, can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks and are generally offered for children ages 7 and up. If you aren’t sure your child is ready, allow him to spend the night at friends’ houses occasionally. Or, as Berkel suggests, take advantage of a weekend family camping opportunity, usually offered in the fall and spring to familiarize campers and their families with the facilities and staff. Conquer Camp Blues Preparation and an awareness of what to expect can ease the transition from home to camp. Before your child departs, go over a list of everything she will need. Pack a physical connection to home like a favorite sleeping bag, stuffed animal or pillow. Also, mail a card ahead of time to ensure it arrives before the end of camp. Tell your child how you look forward to hearing her camp stories, but avoid saying how much you miss her which can trigger homesickness and worry. Fourteen-year veteran Boy Scout leader, soccer coach and father of eight, John Whiteside, is a camping pro. Over the years, he and his children have participated in multiple camps, including sports, band and weeklong scout camps. Initial nervousness isn’t unusual. If your child asks to come home, Whiteside says to consider the situation, but to encourage him to discuss his anxieties with the camp counselor and take it one day at a time. “Tell him ‘Yes, today was hard, but I think it will be better tomorrow’ and usually tomorrow is better,” he says. While your child may struggle at first, chances are he’ll come home a happy camper with a heightened sense of self-confidence, memorable stories and a passel of new friends to boot. Must-Dos When Baby Proofing Your House Before a child is six months old and already becoming mobile, parents of toddlers need to think very seriously about protecting their children as they explore the world around them. The best approach to childproofing is to think in terms of multiple barriers. The first barrier between a child and any danger is generally you, the parent, always watching out of the corner of your eye. But that doesn’t always work- particularly with the distractions of ordinary life like phones, computers, and other children. Unfortunately, we cannot avoid such distractions, but we can create additional barriers. For example, a second barrier is to keep the door to a dangerous room closed at all times, and maybe locked. But sometimes that gate might be left open. So, yet a third barrier is to keep the dangerous stuff high up in a cabinet. But sometimes an older child will be visiting and might climb up there and offer that forbidden substance to your child. So, a fourth barrier is to keep it locked. Most protective measures you will be able to figure out for yourselves with a trip to the childproofing section of BabysRUs, Target, or most children’s stores. Here are a few tips to get you thinking: ■■Get down on your hands and knees
and crawl through your home to get a child’s-eye-view of what is easy to access.
■■Use the “toilet paper roll rule”- if it fits through the tube, it can
be choked on.
■■Put all dangerous items (medicines, cleaning agents, knives,
small choking hazards) up high- and preferably in a locked cabinet.
■■Beware of where you put down what you are drinking. Coffee
cups belong far out of reach of toddlers and pots on the stove should have their handles turned inward. If you have a party, don’t leave your drinks around afterward.
■■DO NOT USE WALKERS-they allow children to access
24
Our Kids Magazine | February 2015
dangerous areas such as stairs. ■■Sharp objects, especially
little ones such as toothpicks, are dangerous. Keep them picked up and well hidden, preferably locked and at a height inaccessible to toddlers.
■■Electrical outlet covers are essential. Use the kind that require
you to insert a plug in partway, then turn to access the holes of the outlet. Some standard plastic “pop-in” plug protectors can be easily removed by an adept toddler so be sure to check that it is not easily defeated.
■■Keep electrical appliances such as blow dryers and toasters
unplugged when not in use.
■■Never leave a child unattended in a bath,
even for a minute.
■■All children should learn to swim safely as
early as possible. The more barriers between a pool and your child the better until they are competent swimmers- think safety covers, pool alarms, and multiple fences at least 5 feet high.
■■ Turn down your water heater, if you can,
to a maximum temperature of 120 to 130 degrees. At these temperatures accidental water burns will be much less severe.
■■ All stairs need two sets of gates- one at the top and one at the
bottom. Gates at the top of stairs must be bolted to the wall, and have vertical slats so that a child cannot easily climb over.
■■Cut window-blind cords, or use safety tassels and inner cord
stops so children can’t get entangled.
■■Lock stove knobs- keep kids from igniting stove burners by
using protective appliance knob covers.
■■Hide all cords (electrical, computer, phone). FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
■■Don’t use bumpers in the crib, nor have blankets or
toys in there. Once a child can sit up, lower the mattress down to the lowest level. Once a child can climb out of the crib, take the side off to create a toddler bed, or put a mattress on the floor. Put a gate in the doorway to prevent wandering toddlers at night.
■■Secure furniture that can topple (bookcases, chest of
drawers, televisions) to the wall.
■■ Avoid “choking foods” for
infants and toddlers, and never let your child wander while eating. Worst offenders: hot dogs, whole grapes, popcorn, dried fruits such as raisins, and small candies.
■■Help older children store small
items and toys in labeled bins that are put out of reach of toddler siblings- if they have their own room, allow them to gate it off from their younger sibs.
■■ Put stickers with the poison control number on all
phones: 1-800-222-1222. If you fear your child has ingested a poison, or taken too much of a medication, call poison control rather than the pediatrician- PC is much better equipped to calculate whether there is a need to seek medical help. Never give a child Ipecac or any other liquid after a possible poison ingestion without calling poison control first. If your child appears to be in distress (difficulty breathing, choking, trouble swallowing, drooling) FIRST CALL 911, then poison control.
At Sunshine Cottage, children with hearing loss and normal hearing grow and learn together in a nurturing and fun environment. All students experience the finest education available in South Texas with a low student-to-teacher ratio (6:1) and a hands-on approach to learning, encompassing all State standards.
■■LEARN CPR.
With all these necessary precautions, we parents still have to strike a balance and leave our children room to wander and investigate. One of the best places to do this is in a controlled area. Try to make one central room a safe place to explore, and a location where you can safely deposit your child should you need to run to the bathroom, or answer a call. Fill your bottom kitchen cabinets with pots, pans, Tupperware and other items that your child can discover and play with. Let your child have adequate “floortime” to explore in a safe environment.
