Editor’s NOTE

To a Very Good Year Where do the years go? Just yesterday, I was joining the Our Kids Magazine family, and my first son was a new born. This year he leaves the nest and is off to college. Being associated with Our Kids Magazine all these years gave me the opportunity to learn from its family resource content and to grow as a parent. Like they say, “It takes a village,” and Our Kids Magazine is part of that village. There Is so much to come in 2017 for San Antonio with the expansion of local attractions all over town. And Our Kids will be adding a new event this year for families with younger children With a new year, comes new resolutions. Even young kids can make resolutions. Help your kids pick a simple resolution for themselves and read Meagan Ruffing’s five important steps to helping a child succeed at their New Year’s resolution in her article “Teaching Your Kids About New Year’s Resolutions.” I don’t have to tell you that this year’s election has been one of the most crazy in history. Freelance writer Janeen Lewis has done some historic work herself and dug up “45 Fun and Fascinating Facts about our Presidents.” Whatever your political views may be, this list of presidential fun facts are great to share or quiz your children. Looking forward to the rest of the year, Our Kids will host three events in 2017. Our Kids Magazine 21st Annual Camp Fair will held on February 26 at the Shrine Auditorium. We will also be hosting Kidcation Week again this year in August. And we have a new event called BabyTots Expo that will be held at Rolling Oaks Mall in June. Stay tune for more information.

Teaching Your Kids About New Year’s Resolutions By Meagan Ruffing

As my kids have gotten older, their questions about New Year’s resolutions have gotten more detailed. Questions like: What is New Year’s? Why do you make resolutions? What does resolution mean? Can anyone make a resolution? What happens if you don’t follow through with it? If I didn’t hold myself accountable before, well now I have three little faces staring back at me that will. It got me thinking. Why not include the kids in this year’s resolution making? So that’s exactly what I did. This will work differently for each family depending on how old your children are. My advice is to start small and pick one thing you think your kids can do. Setting them up for success will only increase their chances of seeing their resolution through and as a result, feeling extra good about themselves. For example, my 5-year-old daughter Hannah has been an emotional roller coaster lately. Because this is something I have been wanting to work on anyways and I 6

Our Kids Magazine | January 2017

know it’s something everyone in our household will benefit from, I suggested her New Year’s resolution be to come to me first when telling me how she feels (happy, sad, angry, annoyed, etc.) Each time she does this correctly – meaning, before she starts whining – I will give her a sticker to put on her sticker chart. When her sticker chart fills up, she can go to the store and pick out a reward. There are 5 important steps you can take as the parent when helping your child succeed at their New Year’s resolution this year.

1

.Keep it simple. They’re kids. Their resolutions will probably look different than yours and that’s okay. This isn’t supposed to be an end-all, be-all type thing. Involving your children with New Year’s resolutions is just a fun way to teach them about what it means to want to improve, better yourself, and try new things. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

2

.Have a sense of humor. Your son might want his resolution to be something silly like only eating purple foods for a year. Okay, well, you know and I know that probably won’t last long but that’s fine. If he is really interested in doing this, it would be a great teaching experience. Think of all the foods you guys will end up learning about and you never know, this might end up being a very clever way of finally getting him to try eggplant?

3.

Be a support. One of the best things about being a kid is having a wild imagination. Let your child run with that. Be her biggest supporter. If she really wants to be a unicorn starting January 1, than do everything in your power to make that happen. She will remember the mom who tried and the mom who taped on her horn every day because that is what she believed would be an incredible way to ring in the New Year. Something like this is such a great way to get her interested in reading about unicorns and may even spark her interest in drawing her own My Little Pony.

4

.Model good behavior. As the parent, I keep my resolutions low key and something the entire family can be in on. It helps set the tone for the house and it’s a fun way to let my husband and kids help me succeed in seeing it through. Several years ago, my resolution was to floss my teeth every morning. It was something I wanted to do and I needed that extra incentive to make it happen. Guess what? My kids floss their teeth every night because they see me doing it and we all have fun picking out different types of dental floss when we’re at the store together.

5.

Celebrate and congratulate even if you stop. Even if your daughter’s resolution only lasts a few days or a few hours, celebrate the fact that she was brave enough to say out loud what it was that she wanted to do. These are the years when our children need to know they are free to explore their dreams in a safe place. These are the years when kids need to know their parents are their biggest fans. To get things rolling, jot down a few ideas with your kids about possible resolutions. Start by telling them what a New Year’s resolution means. Tell them what it really boils down to is making a commitment to do something better for yourself or for someone else. When you put it like that, it continues to set the foundation for making good choices and what parent doesn’t want that for their child? Meagan Ruffing is a parenting journalist, author and speaker who tries to make a New Year’s resolution each year. To find out what she’s picked this year as well as what each of her children have picked for their resolutions, visit her at www.meaganruffing.com and everywhere on social media. EDUCATION GUIDE

Education: A Choice Decision 12 Quick Tips on Choosing Your Child’s School By Denise Yearian

There are a host of reasons why parents send their children to private schools. For some, it is a smaller teacher-student ratio and more individualized attention. For others, it is the religious grounding their children receive. For still others, it is to better address their student’s needs and cater to his academic timetable—be it a late bloomer or one who is gifted in math or art. But since no two schools are alike, where do parents begin their search for the right academic setting? Consider these tips: 1. Get real with recommendations. Get input from other parents you know and trust. At the same time, realize there is no perfect school or one-size-fits-all academic setting. Every school has a different flavor, and one is not necessarily better than another. It’s that one may be a better fit for your child than another. 2. Consider your child’s individuality. Take into account his strengths, weaknesses, interests and talents. Also mull over what sort of learning environment he would be most comfortable in. A self-motivated learner, for example, may do 8 Our Kids Magazine | January 2017

well in a program where he gets to direct and carry out his own learning. But a child in need of constant direction might be more suited to a structured environment. 3. Make a list. Write down what you are looking for in a school. Be specific about ambiance, class size, teaching style, curriculum, the role of art and music, homework and where parents fit in the running of the school. Then prioritize your list. Some things, such as class size, a strong art program or religious affiliation, may be non negotiable. Other things would be nice but not necessarily mandatory. 4. Research options. Check out school’s websites that are potential candidates, or call and ask for more information. Consider each one’s program, mission, services, faculty and administration. What makes the school unique? What is its teaching philosophy? Is there a vision for the future? Is there anything the school does particularly well? What about the curriculum? Will it cater to your child’s talents and interests? 5. Don’t let cost limit you. Look at a school, even if you don’t FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

EDUCATION GUIDE think you can afford it. Most academic institutions offer scholarships or have financial aid based on need, so ask about it.

students’ reactions. Did they feel comfortable and relaxed, or anxious and uptight?

6. Go the distance, if needed. A ride as far as 30 minutes may be worth it if the school has an environment where your child will be happy and thrive. Look for someone to carpool with. Or use that distance to let your child study or spend quality time together.

10. Ask for references. If you haven’t already done so, get names of several parents whose children attend the school that would be willing to talk with you. Find out what they do and don’t like about the school. If you can, obtain a few names of parents who were not happy with the school and enrolled their children elsewhere. All schools have success stories, but no school works for every child. So find out about a child who did not thrive there so you can get a balanced perspective.

7. Schedule a visit. Arrange to visit schools that meet your initial criteria. This will give you a feel for the school’s academic and developmental philosophy. Note, however, that even schools which adhere to like-minded philosophies can be tremendously different. A school that seemed to be the perfect fit on the Internet or phone may prove otherwise once you have visited. And the school you weren’t initially drawn to may be the “one.” That’s why it’s important that you go. Test it. Feel it. See what it is like. 8. Meet with authorities. While visiting, spend a few minutes talking with the principal or school administrator. Discuss your child’s needs and ask if the school can meet those needs. 9. Make observations. If possible, sit in on classes and observe the teachers and students. Write down obvious facts such as school and class size, ambiance as a whole and within individual classrooms, absence or presence of a dress code and general demeanor of the students and teachers. Also record the

11. Get your child’s take. Return to the schools that meet your criteria and bring your child with you. Have him meet the teacher, and if possible, spend time in the classroom with the other students. What was his reaction? Did he seem comfortable with the school? The teacher? Other students? 12. Follow your intuition. You know your child better than anyone else. If you have done your homework, you’ll know if it’s the right school for your child. Sometimes it’s not necessarily a specific program or academic feature that lets parents know it’s a good match. It’s that intangible feeling—that visceral reaction. They know this is a place where their child can grow and academically succeed. -Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren.

1. Share to prepare.

Tell your child what you enjoyed about school. If your spouse enjoyed school, encourage him to share stories, too. But if you had a difficult time in school, share those stories with someone who is not your child. Talk to another adult about the ways you struggled, and how those struggles might color your expectations of what school will be like for your child. Get your fears and biases about school off your chest and let them go so you won’t unwittingly pass them on. Remember, your child is not you. That was then, this is now. By confronting and releasing any back-toschool skeletons in your closet, you open the doors to a positive school experience for your child today.

2. Step back.

Raising engaged students is not only the responsibility of the teachers and the administrators at your school, it’s a job that starts at home with every parent. You may have anxiety, fears, or merely first-day jitters about your child going to school. But if you can muster up your courage and take a one-good-day-at-a-time approach, you will find that raising a child who loves school is easier than you might have imagined. Just follow these four simple guidelines, keep your interactions with your school’s employees constructive and upbeat, and watch the magic that occurs when your child loves learning.

Our Kids Magazine | January 2017

Some parents have trouble trusting that a school will care about their child as much as they do. And it is trueteachers won’t treat your child like a parent would. They will probably expect more. And they will care about your child as educational professionals, who want to challenge your child so she can realize her potential, so let them do their jobs. Smart parents know that school is not just about academics. When your child is in school, she is learning how to be a member of a community. She is learning how to socialize and enjoy playtime. She is learning how to express herself through art, music and physical activity. So take a leap of faith. Remind yourself that the folks who run schools are trained professionals. Trust them with your child’s daily education and wellbeing. Then your child will FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

EDUCATION GUIDE experience every day as an adventure in learning and growing.

3. Be positive and proactive.

Try to find something to like about your school on a regular basis. If you don’t know what to like then you might not be aware enough. Have a working knowledge of the school layout. Introduce yourself to teachers on open-house days and meet the folks who work in the front office, including the principal. Make sure the teachers knows you are on their team. If you have a miscommunication or misunderstanding with a teacher or administrator, strive to work things out in a calm, pro-active manner. Don’t hang on to negative perceptions or try to create negative consensus with other parents. Confident, secure parents seek solutions not squabbles. Put yourself in the teacher or administrator’s shoes before you pick up the phone or shoot off that e-mail. Remember, the way you would like to be treated is the way to behave, always, no matter how you feel in the heat of the moment.

4. Give without strings.

Whether you work full time or not, there are typically two types of parent volunteers: those who willingly pitch in and help and those who don’t want to spend time at school but do it for their kids. Be honest about the kind of parent you are, so you can find ways to be a cheerful contributor to the school. If you like to pitch in with your time and presence, join the PTA or sign up to be a room parent. You will find plenty of opportunities to contribute, but do so without expectations of payoffs for your child based on

your involvement. The benefits for your child come when you happily contribute, not when you use your position as an insider to create an ongoing list of how you would do things differently and better. Remember your role as a helper in the larger scheme of things. Be service-minded, looking for opportunities to match the school’s needs with what you have to offer. Do your best not to criticize parents who are less committed to volunteering than you, unless you wish to be judged back. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time at school, acknowledge that your child could benefit from seeing you at school once in a while whether you enjoy volunteering or not. Break the school year up into three parts and try to pitch in to help or chaperone at least once each season. Don’t forget to get your spouse involved. Two reasonably involved parents are better than none. And don’t feel guilty about not being a parenting association volunteer. There are plenty of ways to contribute that don’t funnel through the PTA. Give money to financially support the programs of the PTA, if you can swing it. Then go to your child’s teacher when looking for ways to contribute in proximity to your child. No matter how you choose to contribute, when you give the way you want to give, you set a great example for your kids. Parents who invest energy cheerfully and proactively in their child’s school stand out in the crowd for all the right reasons, paving the way to success in school for all their children. Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz has always loved school and strives to pass this passion on to her daughter. She comes from an extended family of enthusiastic learners, teachers, and educators.

45 Fun and Fascinating Facts about our Presidents By Janeen Lewis

Which president has a foreign capital named for him? Who modeled for a magazine during college? Which president first had a telephone in the White House? To celebrate President’s Day, here are 45 fun and fascinating facts about our commanders-in-chief. 1. First president George Washington had teeth that were made, not from wood, but from hippopotamus ivory, bone, and human teeth. 2. When John Adams, the second president, died on July 4th, 1826 he said: “Thomas Jefferson survives.” He didn’t know that Jefferson had died hours earlier that same day – the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. 3. Thomas Jefferson, the third president, designed his own tombstone. The epitaph makes no mention of his presidency. 4. The fourth president, James Madison, was known as “The Father of the Constitution.” He was the last surviving original signer of the document. 5. James Monroe, the fifth president, is the only one to have a foreign capital named for him. Monrovia, Liberia was a colony established in Africa in 1821 for freed black Americans. 6. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, was appointed Minister of The Netherlands at age 26. 7. Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, was the son of Irish immigrants. 18

Unbelievably, two of Tyler’s grandsons are still alive today. 11. James Knox Polk, the eleventh president, was nicknamed “Young Hickory” after President Andrew Jackson whose nickname was “Old Hickory.” 12. The 12th president, Zachary Taylor, died suddenly in office. His body was exhumed in 1991 to prove he hadn’t been poisoned with arsenic. 13. Millard Fillmore, the 13th president, was born in a log cabin and taught himself to read while working as a cloth maker. 14. FAMILY THEATRE

Magik Theatre presents Roxaboxen beginning January 13 with a special “sensory-friendly” performance scheduled for January 28. Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, Jr: Woodlawn Academy of Performing Arts Youth Workshop. Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. follows enigmatic candy manufacturer Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whomever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. The children must learn to follow Mr. Wonka’s rules in the factory – or suffer the consequences. January 12 through 15. Show times vary by date. $10 General Seating/$15 Preferred Seating. Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg Rd. 210-267-8388. http://woodlawntheatre.org/ Roxaboxen: To most people, Roxaboxen was just a hill with stones, some wooden boxes, and lots of cactus. ONGOING EXHIBITS San Antonio Botanical Garden

Art in the Garden is a yearlong exhibition at the Garden for which Shotz has conceived a newly commissioned large-scale, freestanding steel sculpture, Scattering Screen. It features small mirrored circles that “reflect light and scatter the visible surroundings into thousands of tiny pieces,” per the artist. Exhibit runs through June 2017. Admission: $10 adults (14-64); $8 students, seniors, military; $7 children age 3-13; free for children under 3 and all members. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Institute of Texan Cultures

The Institute of Texan Culture’s “Painted Churches of Texas” exhibit is in full swing and will run through March 5.

Painted Churches of Texas showcases more than two dozen intricately painted 19th century churches built by immigrants from Germany, the former Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, France, Spain, Mexico, and beyond. Using technology developed for NASA’s Mars Rovers, large-scale Gigapan photographs of the painted churches of Texas reveal astounding details along with our state’s rich history of immigrant artistry. Featuring images by Jim and Jane Whitcomb. Exhibit runs through March 5.

Area kids and families can come out and enjoy “Our Community: The History and Heritage of New Braunfels” at the Institute of Texan Cultures through February 12

Our Community: The History and Heritage of New Braunfels allows students throughout Comal Independent School District to celebrate their region’s cultural heritage through a multi-media exhibit. A mural, paintings in the German tradition, replicas of cattle brands, illustrations of Grimm’s fairy tales in New Braunfels, and an interactive display highlight the history of New Braunfels and surrounding towns. Exhibit runs through February 12.

Foreign by Land, Native by Heart tells the stories of four refugee families coming to San Antonio. Their accounts describe the conditions that caused them to flee their native countries, and how they have adapted to their new homes. The families profiled in the exhibit have come to Texas from Malaysia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. The exhibit will recount the circumstances of the refugee process,

such as minimal luggage, a plastic bag containing the family’s vital records, and samples of the necessities and mementos they chose to bring with them on the trip. Exhibit runs from December 9 through April 9, 2017. “1000 Parks and a Line in the Sky: Broadway, Avenue of the Future,” is a design vision by Antonio Petrov, UTSA assistant professor of architecture, and the “think/do-tank” he has established in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning. The exhibit features a 50-foot-long model of Broadway, a street that has the potential to become San Antonio’s great urban avenue. Recent developments on Broadway, such as the Museum Reach and the Pearl, and renewed interest in the street’s future have generated much discussion about what becoming an “urban” city actually means. In its present state, however, nearly fifty percent of Broadway’s urban landscape is flanked by parking space while nearly all spaces along the corridor are tied to businesses, leaving almost no public space for people to gather as citizens without being consumers. Petrov has conducted extensive research on Broadway and proposes a linear park system, comprised of unused interstitial spaces found along the street, and a skyride that connects the airport to Travis Park. Many residents and visitors to San Antonio remember experiencing the city from the sky between the 1960s and 1990s on the Brackenridge Park skyride. Inspired by this local history, he explores possible future directions for urban development, public parks, and alternative transportation systems using the Broadway corridor as a model. The interactive installation focuses on public input, while associated public events, roundtable discussions, photo collection events, and educational programming will bridge the past and future of Broadway to help the community imagine its new identity. Visitors are also able to experience a nostalgic moment by taking a seat in a gondola from the original Brackenridge skyride. Exhibit runs through April 16, 2017. Admission: $8 for adults (12-64); $7 for seniors (65+); $6 for To Advertise Call 305-4181

Parlour Games: Ruloff Kip’s Toy Theatre is an exhibit for kids of all ages. While vacationing at his Long Island country home in the winter of 1919, Ruloff Kip created a toy theatre for his young daughter, Elizabeth. The large, elaborate theatre features moving mechanisms, several working lighting schemes, and an array of set drops and cut-out characters, based on Kip’s house and family members. Long thought to be the work of artist Everett Shinn, recent research has uncovered interesting new perspectives on the theatre itself, as well as the fascinating background of its true creator and his family. Exhibit runs through February 5, 2017. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $5 for seniors (65+), students with I.D. (13+), and active duty military; and free for children ages 12 and younger and to all museum members. Regular hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
