I

t’s Summer time and here goes my annual spill about kids and safety.

While I don’t have actual figures it seems to me that this year more than in past recent years, I have read and heard about a greater number of vehicular Magazine and pedestrian accidents involving children. And we are just now beginning to approach summer when most San Antonio area youngsters will be out of school. This means that San Antonio streets in and around our neighborhoods will be bustling with activity – kids playing ball, running, biking, you name it. Unfortunately this means an increase in the likelihood of accidents. But it does Magazine not have to be so, if drivers slow down and look out for kids in both the likely places and the not-so-likely areas. I can remember eons ago, when drivers education was still taught in the high schools (simulation included), my instructor telling us to always be on the lookout for bouncing balls while driving through neighborhoods because not far behind would be a defenseless child. That message has always stuck with me and for some strange reason, to this day; I still see the face of my instructor, Coach Weir when I see a bouncing ball in the street. I guess he made a lasting impression on me and how I drive. Even if you did not have a Coach Weir in your life, make safety a priority and while we’re at it let’s put down the handheld cell phones when traveling in areas where we know kids are playing.

In This Issue This month’s issue of Our Kids is chock full of information everything from helpful features on Father’s Day, movies to enjoy with the kids this summer, teaching your toddler self control, throwing a Wizard of Oz backyard birthday party and of course, a world of events and activities for you to enjoy with the family. Happy reading!

family F.Y.I. S.A. Food Bank Program Feeding Low-Income Youth When school is out, San Antonio area youth lose access to regular daily school lunches and breakfasts through their school’s free or reduced lunch program. The San Antonio Food Bank will seek to fill this void through its Summer Food Program from June 9-Aug. 22. It is estimated that the school meals typically provide at least one-third and one-fourth, respectively, of nutrients that a child needs during the school year. However, many families cannot meet these needs during the summer as such food banks around the country report an increase in request for emergency care during this time.

The San Antonio Food Bank Summer Food Program will provide nutritious meals and snacks at more than 100 area locations to school-age children younger than 18. It is anticipated that more than 230,000 free meals will be distributed in Bexar and Comal counties to about 16,000 children during the 60-day period. Meals include breakfast, lunch and snack. Meals are typically available at most area Boys and Girls Clubs, community centers, the San Antonio Central Library downtown and several library branch locations around the city. For a complete list of sites and times of servings visit www.safoodbank.org.

Do Dads Still Matter? In the 1950s, father Jim Anderson knew best. In the ’80s, Cliff Huxtable doled out wisecracking fatherly advice. And in the ’90s, Al Bundy showed that even cynical dads knew a thing or two. Psychologists studying the father-child relationship agree that dad does matter in the rearing of children. Research shows that dad’s involvement impacts cognitive ability, educational achievement, psychological well being, social behavior and more. Supporting these points is the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse website which is maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Among other points made, the site states the following: ■■Children with actively involved fathers display less behav-

ior problems in school

■■Preschoolers with actively involved fathers have stronger

Juliette and Daddy (John-Paul Lozano)

hours per month doing things together that are “totally fun and silly,” educational, and active and outdoors ■■Fodada will recognize dads who sign the pledge by sending them a specially designed T-shirt.

verbal skills

■■Fathers’ involvement seems to encourage children’s explo-

ration of the world around them and their confidence in their ability to solve problems. If Bobby Barzi, creator of a casual wear clothing label, had his way – dads wouldn’t be defined by TV sitcoms, and kids would look to their own fathers for fun, education and adventure. Barzi is taking up a crusade this Father’s Day to bring fathers and their children closer together. Barzi’s campaign is called, “Dad and Me,” and it’s works like this: ■■Kids download a commitment letter from www.fodada. com and give it to their dads on Father’s Day ■■ Both father and child sign it, pledging to spend three 10

Celebrating Dad With Gifts from the Heart By Denise Morrison Yearian

F

ather’s Day is a time to celebrate the dads and other male role models in our lives. Rather than spending a fortune on gadgets and gizmos that break or collect dust, why not make Dad something meaningful to show him you love and appreciate him? Here are a few ideas to get you started.

“Dad Rocks” Paperweight Items needed: 1/4 cup salt; 1/2 cup flour; 1/4 cup water; mixing bowl; cookie sheet; 1/2 cup pea gravel; acrylic sealer spray.

1. 2.

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

Mix flour, salt and water together in a bowl. If dough is too sticky, add small amounts of flour until it is pliable. (Tip: don’t add too much flour or the dough will crack when dry.)

3. 4. 5.

Shape dough into a ball. Place on the cookie sheet and flatten to ½-inch thickness. Use pea gravel to spell out “Dad Rocks.” Press stones gently but firmly into the dough. Bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until completely dry.

12

Our Kids Magazine | June 2014

6. 7.

Remove from oven and cool. Spray with acrylic sealer to preserve your paperweight.

Personalized Picture Puzzle

Items needed: wide Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors (8 or 9); white glue; tape; Exacto knife or scissors; photo of you and Dad; ribbon.

1. 2.

Line up Popsicle sticks side-by-side on a flat surface.

over.

Place two pieces of tape across the top and bottom of sticks to hold together. Turn sticks

3.

On the non-taped side, glue photo onto the Popsicle sticks, making sure you put glue over the entire surface, including the edges.

4. 5.

Place picture sticks under heavy books for 24 hours or until dry. Pull tape off the back.

6.

With an adult’s help, use an Exacto knife (or scissors) to cut the Popsicle sticks apart. (Tip: to cut uniform lines, use an extra Popsicle stick as a line guide.)

7.

Stack the sticks and tie them with a ribbon.

“World’s Best Dad” Trophy Items needed: yellow paper cup; toilet paper roll; cardboard; pencil; yellow tempera or acrylic paint; paintbrush; glue gun (low setting); scissors; construction paper; markers; gold glitter (optional).

1. 2. 3. 4.

Draw and cut out a 4-inch circle from cardboard for the trophy base.

On the cup, write “World’s Best Dad” with markers.

To create handles, fold construction paper in half. At the folded end, draw a handle resembling the shape of the number “7” that is about 2 ½-inches high. With paper still folded, cut out shape, then cut along the fold to make two corresponding handles.

5.

Make a small fold at each end of the handles, dab with glue and press onto each side of the cup to secure handles. Let dry.

6.

Place glue on both ends of the toilet paper roll. Glue one end to the bottom of the cup, and the other end to the cardboard circle. Let dry.

7.

Apply glue to entire surface then sprinkle with glitter, if desired.

Celebrating Dad Beyond Golf Balls and Coffee Mugs By Christina Katz

Here’s what dad doesn’t need for Father’s Day: more chores to do around the house and yard. Here’s what Dad does need: a thoughtful gift from his family that makes him feel loved and appreciated for who he is. Here are 105 ideas to help you brainstorm a unique gift, or gift combination, perfect for the man of your house. Dad is an original. So why does he always get the same old gifts for Father’s Day? Maybe it’s time to think outside the gift box and come up with some original Father’s Day gifts. This list of gift suggestions is organized by Dad types, because, after all, most dads have specific passions and attitudes that make them who they are. Shoppers, whether little or big, with this list in hand can use dad’s enthusiasms to help select the perfect Father’s Day gift or gifts, while enjoying an exercise in thoughtfulness.

Keeping It Reel Some of Our Favorite Summer Movies for Kids

By Renee Haines

It seems we’ve all got our favorites when it comes to summer movies for kids and kids at heart, whether we’re watching a DVD at home, streaming a classic or heading down to the local movie theater or free public screening at a city park. Ruth Chiego, manager of the children’s department at the Central Library of the San Antonio Public Library System, and her 4-year-old son Tad like “How to Train Your Dragon,” a 2010 animated film they can borrow from the library’s DVD collection. “It’s such a sweet movie about the relationship the boy has with his dragon, and it’s hilarious, so it’s also great for adults,” she says. Angela Martinez, owner of San Antonio’s Slab Cinema, and her kids like watching “Toy Story” (1995) and its sequels. Her 9-year-old daughter Felice likes Walt Disney’s “Frozen,” released in late 2013, for its “sing-along songs,” Martinez says. Her 11-year-old son Wiley loves the funny plot of “Nacho Libre,” a 2006 Paramount Pictures comedy about a monk who moonlights as a Mexican wrestler. Martinez’s favorite is the animated movie “Ice Age,” a 2002 20th Century Fox release. “This has a lot of humor for adults and children,” she says. Los Angeles filmmakers Henry Saine and Jason 22

Our Kids Magazine | June 2014

Dodson of Just Chorizo Productions say they watched hundreds of kids’ movies while growing up in San Antonio. Now in their 30s, they say they still like to invite friends to watch old favorites. Dodson likes “The Goonies,” a 1985 Amblin Entertainment live-action film. “It’s every kid’s dream to find a treasure map and go on an adventure,” says Dodson, a graduate of San Antonio’s Holmes High School. “It’s wish fulfillment for every kid’s fantasy.” Saine, a MacArthur High School graduate, says 1987’s “Princess Bride” remains one of his favorites. “It’s an old-fashioned adventure – action, magic, romance, hijinks – all told to a kid who’s reluctant to listen to what us old people think is a great kid’s story, all while teaching kids that good will triumphs and to follow your heart,” says Saine. Chris Prichard, director of operations technology at Santikos Theatre in San Antonio, is another kid at heart when it comes to G-rated films. Even though Prichard’s kids are now in high school and college, “we still enjoy the family films. We still have a soft spot for animation,” he says. One of his favorites is FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

“The Lion King.” The 1994 Walt Disney coming-ofage animated movie about a lion cub in the wilds of Africa involves a tale of overcoming adversity that appeals to kids and adults, he says.

Reel Bargains Many San Antonio area movie theaters offer free or reduced-priced family movie screenings each summer, and you can also take the family to outdoor venues. Santikos, for example, will offer free summer movies at 10 a.m. each Tuesday and Wednesday in June and July. Popular familyfriendly movies will include “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Despicable Me 2” in June and “The Croods” and “Epic” in July. Visit Santikos.com for dates and theater locations. Martinez of Slab Cinema, which rents outdoor screening equipment, says her company is providing the screens for Movies by Moonlight, a series of family films that will be shown free at downtown San Antonio’s Travis Park this summer. Among the movies on tap are “Frozen” and “Finding Nemo” in June, and “Toy Story 2” and “Cars 2” in July. Visit SlabCinema.com for dates and locations of other free outdoor screenings. In no particular order, here are plot snapshots of a few favorites based on interviews and industry websites. “How to Train Your Dragon,” based on the books by Cressida Cowell, is a 2010 animated 3-D film about a teenage boy from a Viking village who must capture, but instead befriends, a dragon to impress the village and his dad. “The Goonies” is a 1985 live-action film about suburban kids finding a treasure map in the attic that leads them to a pirate ship. Its cast and crew feature familiar names, including director Richard Donner (“Lethal Weapon”) and writing credits for Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus. You also get to see actors like Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men”) and Sean Astin (“The Lord of the Rings” series) when they were kids. “The Lion King,” Disney’s 1994 animated film starring a lion cub who grows up to be king, won two Academy Awards for music and the Golden Globe Award for best musical or comedy motion picture.

Our Kids Magazine | June 2014

“The Princess Bride” from 1987 won critics’ accolades for a witty script by William Goldman, who had already won two Academy Awards for screenwriting for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “All the President’s Men.” The liveaction movie about a stable boy who tries to rescue a damsel from an evil prince was directed by Rob Reiner (“When Harry Met Sally,” “Stand By Me,” “The Bucket List”). “Toy Story” (1995) and “Toy Story 2” (1999) feature the voice of Tom Hanks as the toy cowboy Woody and voice of Tim Allen as toy astronaut Buzz Lightyear. Among the writers on the original animated film is Joss Whedon, who went on to write and direct the 2012 hit movie “Avengers.” “Frozen,” an animated Disney film with two princesses, a reindeer, snowman and trolls, was released in late 2013 and won the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for best-animated feature film of the year. The film won another Academy Award for best song. “Ice Age,” released in 2002, is an Academy Award-nominated animated movie about animals scrambling for survival during the Ice Age. Director Chris Wedge was responsible for another popular family film, “Epic,” in 2013. “Finding Nemo,” the 2003 Disney/ Pixar animated movie starring the voices of Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks, won the Academy Award for best-animated feature and became one of the industry’s top money-makers for G-rated movies in theaters and on DVD.

Reel Classics Older classic children’s films still top some lists of favorites. The American Film Institute ranks Disney’s animated “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) at No. 1 on its list of greatest animated films. “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) tops its list of greatest fantasy films. Streaming Family Movies On the Go With so many movies available for online streaming on today’s smart phones, laptops and tablets, it’s easy to watch movies on the go during your family’s summer travels. In addition to providing access to hundreds of family-friendly DVDs, the San Antonio Public Library system is one of many public libraries in Texas that allow you free access to online movie streaming services. All you need is a library card, available at no cost at any participating main library or branch. “With all the traveling families do during the summer, you can just take the library along,” says Ruth Chiego, manager of the Central Library’s children’s department for the San Antonio Public Library. Librarians can help you sign up using your library card and show you in advance how to best use each movie streaming service. Chiego’s staff created a list of some of their favorites for Our Kids Magazine that can be accessed through online movie streaming services available through the library.

BookFlix Family Favorites BookFlix is an online service available through the San Antonio Public Library that pairs animation videos with popular eBooks. Chiego and her fellow librarians like “Giraffes Can’t Dance,” based on the book by Giles Andreae, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” based on the book by Bill Martin Jr., and “Bark, George,” based on the classic children’s book by Jules Feiffer. Several titles also are available in Spanish. Freegal On The Go Freegal is another online video streaming service with movies for kids. The San Antonio children’s librarians recommend “Spiderwick Chronicles,” based on a series of books by Tony DiTerlizzi, and “Charlotte’s Web,” based on E.B. White’s classic book. Streaming Indie Flix While Indie Flix is better known for streaming movies for older audiences, “one gem we found was an Oscar-winning short film called ‘The Lost Thing,’” says Chiego. The 2010 Australian film, based on the book by Shaun Tan, is about a boy who finds a strange creature at the beach. It won the Academy Award for best-animated short film. – Renee Haines

Party Directory Follow the Yellow Brick Road to a

Backyard Birthday Part y By Pam Molnar

Thinking about planning a movie themed party for your child’s birthday? There are so many to choose from – Minions and Monsters and Olaf (oh my!). Classic movie watchers know there is no place like home for a backyard party with a “Wizard of Oz” theme. Generations of children have enjoyed the story of Dorothy and her friends’ journey to the Emerald City. Simply grab your ruby slippers and present a day of fun with games and crafts that your Munchkin will love. Get this party started with a “Follow the Yellow Brick Road to My Party” invitation. Attach a yellow rectangular sponge, to represent the brick and ask the guests to bring it along to the party. As the kids arrive, entertain them with the project of painting a yellow brick road on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk paint. (Recipe in sidebar.) This gives the kids something to do as they wait for everyone to arrive.

Goody Bags Add these items to a mini-basket from the dollar store and line the basket with a blue gingham cloth. • An apple • A large lollipop • Rainbow Skittles • Ding Dongs (the Witch is dead) • Animal crackers (full of lions and tigers and bears) • And their crafts from the party 26

Bring on the Games Along Dorothy’s journey, she encountered friends who wanted a brain, a heart and courage. Play games to earn those items by the time the party ends at the Emerald City. You might want to offer ribbons as they complete the games in each area. Brain Games Print out two Wizard of Oz pictures and glue it to thin cardboard. Cut into puzzle pieces and separate kids into two teams. The first team to finish the puzzle is the winner. To make your puzzle game challenging, hand out the puzzle pieces one at a time for answering Wizard of Oz trivia. For example: What is Dorothy’s dog’s name? What color is Dorothy’s dress?

Painting Camps All Summer Long

Mix together equal parts of water and cornstarch and add enough food coloring to make it as bright as you like it. Pour into small bowls so the kids can dip their sponges. Go on a Rainbow Scavenger Hunt in the neighborhood. Ask for items that are blue, purple, red, orange, yellow and green. These can be paperclips, tissue, a candle, etc. First team back to the house is the winner.

Heart Games Play Pin the Heart on the Tin Man. This is a spin off on the classic Pin the Tail on the Donkey game. Hunt for the Hearts. Cut out red hearts and hide them in the back yard. Send the kids out to search for them like an Easter Egg Hunt. Play with a limit (first one back is the winner) or let them find as many as they can. Musical Hearts is similar to Hot Potato. Have the guests sit in a circle. Turn on the music and pass around a stuffed heart. When the music stops the person holding the heart is out. To spare hurt feelings, the first person out is the first one to have her gift opened. Courage Games Find a penny in a bowl of flying monkey brains. Fill a bowl with cold cooked spaghetti noodles. Blindfold the player and have them find the penny buried inside. Use your favorite green smoothie recipe to fill clear Dixie cups for only the bravest children to drink the Melted Witch Smoothie. The kids that gobble it down the fastest win. Dress up an adult or older sibling as an angry apple tree – brown clothes and a leaf hat will work well. Velcro felt apples to his arms, back and chest. Blindfold the tree and challenge the kids to pick an apple from the tree without getting caught. Crafts and activities Craft your own ruby slippers. Purchase cheap flipflops from the craft store and glittery or fuzzy red yarn (Like Shimmer from Red Heart). Tie yarn to one end of the strap and continue wrapping it around until you get to the other end. Tie off to secure. Create rainbow jewelry by making a rainbow loom or friendship bracelet. You can also use Wizard of Oz charms found online at Etsy or colorful plastic beads from the craft store. Make Glinda’s wand by hot gluing precut wooden stars to dowel rods from the craft store. Have the kids paint and sprinkle on some glitter. Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. She enjoys party planning as much as the kids enjoy the party.

baby Learning How to Yield

Teaching Children Self-Control By Judy M. Miller

Part of the responsibility of parenting is teaching our children how to control their responses to the world they live in. Through discipline (“to teach”) children learn to master self-control, a vital life-skill for success. Self-control is the ability to regulate emotions, desires, and the verbal, nonverbal, or physical expression of those desires, especially when challenged by other people and situations. Children will come to rely on self-control as they move through the stages of infancy and childhood into adolescence and adulthood, calling again and again on their ability to tolerate frustration and to manage themselves in a variety of situations.

Begin Early Self-control begins when children are infants, when parents empathetically respond to their child when he is tired, hungry, cold, needing connection or have soiled their diapers. A child must trust in his others. Trust is the foundation for self-control. Parents teach infants how to self-soothe, the first self-regulation (self-control) skill. Infants are able to self-soothe because they trust that their parents will care for and nurture them. I used to rub all of my kids’ backs when they fussed before drifting off in their cribs, letting them know I was close and responsive. They calmed and quickly fell into a deep slumber. Model what you want to see in your child Children learn emotional regulation through parental regulation. When modeling, parents should respond to others and in situations the way they wish their children to respond. Model calm, even though you may feel otherwise. 30

Our Kids Magazine | June 2014

“You sounded mean when you spoke to me... Try again, please.”

You are always the teacher. You are also the student, always. Take a look at yourself first when you witness your child behaving in a way of which you do not approve.

K.I.S.S. Keep it short and simple. For example with the younger child directions can be something like, “If you hit, you sit.” The parent follows through and when the child is ready, he can re-engage with others, with a reminder of “no hitting” as well as using his words. Self-control generally improves as children develop and the prefrontal cortex area of the brain, which regulates behavior, matures. Older children have had years of experience of knowing the rules, routines and what behavior is expected in numerous situations. Use do-overs and generous praise Parents can go over instructions to reinforce the behavior they wish to see. Do-overs teach, encourage and strengthen the self-control “muscle” in children. The best time to achieve a do-over is when the child and the parent are calm and the lack of control has recently occurred. For example, “You sounded mean when you spoke FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

to me. I understand you may be tired, but that is not the way we speak to each other. Try again, please.” And then have your child speak, until he has achieved the proper tone. Praise him for doing it the way you asked him to and for controlling himself. Repetition and verbal praise, along with a hug and smile, reinforce the selfcontrol you are trying to instill in your child.

Help your child notice his lack of control and work on problem solving Discuss the reason(s) why your child becomes out of control. Does he have a specific “flashpoint” or trigger? Is he tired? Hungry? Overtaxed with too many tasks or commitments? My daughter is triggered by hunger. She becomes snarky and then downright mean and combative as her blood sugar drops; in her case we make sure she eats small portions of protein throughout the day. With the help of your child come up with one or two go-to ideas that work for him when he loses control. For my son, we long ago discovered two options that work well with him. He either goes to his room to cool off until he feels in control or he takes a long shower to “wash away the emotional dirt.” His choice. The child that re-emerges is my sweet, thoughtful loving boy.

Focus on the positive Positive reinforcement begets more positive behavior. Bring up the positive whenever possible, “You are so thoughtful and kind. You helped your sister feel better when you sat with her and read to her.” Kids love to be stroked and be noticed for the good behavior they have. Reward kids for self-control The most sought-after reward with my kids is one-on-one time with their dad or me. We try to be efficient, pulling together to get things done to allow for more “together” time, “I was able to complete my errand quickly because you were so patient; now I have more time to spend with you. What would you like to do?” No child is perfect or comes with instructions. Focus on the love you have for your child, your relationship with him, and his strengths and interests. Your child’s self-control will eventually improve if you are consistent with discipline, expectations and verbal praise. Judy M.
