Editor’s NOTE
Feeling lucky? I’m so glad this winter season is coming to a close. Was it just me or was this one of the worst flu seasons ever? I have been yearning for spring to hurry up, so our families can get over from being sick and yucky to feeling lucky! Spring Break is the perfect time in March to go outside catch some sun and maybe try to find a four leafed clover with the kids. This month there are so many St. Patrick’s Day theme fun to do, from making rainbow cupcakes to playing boards games to see who has the Luck of the Irish. For more ideas read Pam Molnar article “A Dozen Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This issue we continue on with our camp guide in which Denise Morrison Yearian lists “10 Tips to Help Keep Kids’ Competition in Healthy Perspective.” Freelance writer, Gayla Grace, also gets a kids point of view of the many benefits of day camps. Besides constantly changing diapers, being an attentive parent and trying to figure out a newborns needs is always a struggle for first time parents. This month in our baby section, Christina Katz gives “7 Things Every Baby Needs To Thrive” to help one become a more mindful parent. The Our Kids Magazine’s Calendar is where all the funs at. Here are a few events to keep an eye out for this month. 2nd Annual Mockingbird Fest down at the Yanaguana Gardens, The Three Javelinas at Magik Theatre and the 2nd Annual Monarch Festival at the Zoo. Our Kids Magazine will also be attending and sponsoring the 11th Annual ‘Fest Of Tails’ Kite Festival & Dog Fair on March 18th at the McAllister Dog Park. Come out, fly a kite with us and bring your furry friends.
Happy Reading!

A Dozen Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day x
By Pam Molnar
The celebration of St. Patrick’s Day has spread throughout the world. Originating in Ireland, March 17th was spent at church and with family, celebrating the teachings of Christianity. When the Irish emigrated to the United States and Canada, the festivities evolved to the wearing of the green, watching parades and eating corned beef and cabbage. In recent years, countries as far away as Japan and Russia started celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, proving you don’t have to be Irish to enjoy their holiday. Whether you are Irish or not, you can take time to explore these fun activities with your family. With a dozen ideas to choose from, you can extend your celebration right through the month of March.
Grow a Leprechaun. Decorate a terra cotta pot with a Leprechaun face. Fill the pot with soil and add shamrock seeds (found online at Amazon.com). Place the pot in a sunny place and watch the “hair” of your Leprechaun grow. Watch Irish movies together. Try “The Secret 8

of Roan Inish”, “The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns” or “The Luck of the Irish”.
Live a greener life.
Use this “green” month to teach your children how their efforts can help the environment. Conserve water by taking shorter showers, save energy by shutting off electronics when not in use and walk instead of drive when possible.
Make Irish Soda Bread.
Combine 4 cups of flour, 4 tablespoons of white sugar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of salt and ½ cup of softened margarine in a bowl. Add 1 cup of buttermilk, 1 egg and 1 cup of raisins (optional) and mix well. Knead dough slightly and form into a round. Place on baking sheet. Cut “X” in bread top and brush with 1 egg white. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Have the Leprechaun visit every night while you sleep.

Research your family tree even if you don’t have Irish roots. Start with a free trial on Ancestry.com and see how far back you can trace your family’s history. You may be surprised to find a few Leprechauns hanging out in your family tree.

Make rainbow cupcakes. Prepare a box of white cake mix as directed. Place equal amounts of the batter in 6 separate bowls. Add food coloring to each bowl to make yellow, orange, red, green, blue and purple batter. Spoon equal amounts of the colored batter into a prepared muffin tin. Do not mix. Bake as directed. Decorate with green icing and yellow mini chocolate candies to represent the gold at the end of the rainbow.

Incorporate a green vegetable into your dinner plan each night. Try cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, peas, spinach, asparagus, cucumbers and green beans. Tell your kids that Leprechauns love everything green and that you made some of their favorite meals. It’s a great way to get them to try new veggies. For really picky eaters, offer a chocolate gold coin chaser as a reward for trying.

Make your own green flowers. Buy a bouquet of white carnations. Fill a vase with water and several drops of green food coloring. Make a fresh cut in the bottom of the flower stem before placing them in the vase. Watch as the green food coloring slowly makes it way up the stem and into the white flower turning the petals green.
Share your blessings. Although the December holidays are over, the need for volunteers and charitable gifts are still vital. Use your family’s time and talents to give back to the community. Pam Molnar is a freelance journalist and mother of three. With Irish roots in their family tree, St. Patrick’s Day is always celebrated in their home.

CAMP GUIDE
Benefits of Day CampFrom a Kid’s Perspective By Gayla Grace
Nathan Cole, 16 years old, has attended camp every year since he was 5. His eyes light up when you ask what he enjoys most about camp. A typical teenage boy who’s not overly expressive, Nathan can quickly list off reasons why he still loves to go to camp. Here are a few benefits from his viewpoint:
1. It’s Fun!
“Camp is always fun. Sports camp, church camp, day camp or week-long camp-it doesn’t matter, I always have fun when I go to camp,” said Nathan. His preference is to head out with a few kids he already knows, but he says he’s attended a few sports camps where he didn’t know anyone on day one. “The camaraderie happens easily among kids at camps. It doesn’t take long for fun to begin, even with those you’ve just met,” he adds.
10
Our Kids Magazine | March 2017
2. It Takes You Away from Normal Life Nathan admits that long summer days can get boring. “I like to get away from the routine and experience things I can’t do at home,” he said. “My favorite camp has stuff like zip lines, paddle boats, go carts, paintball, archery, and riflery - things I don’t get to do at home.” With activities like that to keep kids entertained, technology gets left behind and exercise becomes a daily occurrence.
3. You Make New Friends
“I didn’t have any friends the summer we moved out of state when I was in elementary school,” said Nathan. “I went to a baseball camp that summer and made friends who ended up being in my class the next school year, which helped me adjust to a new school.” Learning to meet new people and easily form friendships is a valuable skill for kids at any age.

CAMP GUIDE 4. You Learn About Others and Different Ways Kids Live
“I learned to appreciate my own family much more after finding out about the difficult home life many kids have,” Nathan said. “Campers tend to open up with each other and you find out your own life isn’t so hard,” he said. Kids learn to accept others from different walks of life and appreciate their circumstances as they make friends outside of their everyday people base.
5. Sports Camps Help Improve Your Skill “I’ve gone to a lot of sports camps that helped me get better at soccer,” Nathan said. “I’ve made the high school soccer team the last two years and I think the camps I’ve attended helped.” Sports camps provide discipline and individual attention to a particular sport. They help develop an athlete in the game he loves. Competition on the playing field grows stronger as kids move through junior high and high school and attending a sportsspecific camp can help give a young athlete an edge on the competition.
6. You Learn to Respect Different Kinds of Authority

Camp offers activities not available at home and kids are encouraged to try them. “Some kids don’t like to experience new things, but camp counselors help them move out of their comfort zone and do it anyway,” Nathan said. Confidence is gained when kids overcome their fears. Nathan says his camp experience will be different this summer. “I’m going as a Junior Counselor for the first time to the camp I’ve attended since I was in elementary school,” he said. “I’m looking forward to helping young campers get out of their everyday routine and find fun at camp!”

and school. It’s good for them to experience different levels of authority at camp. “The camp counselors are usually teenagers and sometimes kids disrespect them,” said Nathan. “But campers have to understand the counselors’ place of authority, regardless of their age, and consequences for not following the rules,” he added.

CAMP GUIDE
10 Tips to Help Keep Kids’ Competition in Healthy Perspective By Denise Morrison Yearian
Competition can sharpen kids’ skills and drive them to achieve their personal best. But when undue emphasis is placed on winning and excelling, it can be detrimental to a child and his relationship with others. As a result the child may become reluctant to attend lessons, programs or games, or they may want to stop going altogether. Likewise, he may develop an unhealthy view of competition. As a parent, you can help steer your child’s experience in a direction that is positive, fun and can teach valuable life skills. Following are10 tips to help: 1. Watch for signs. While it is normal to show disappointment in a bad play or lost game, if a child’s view of competition is unhealthy, parents may need to intervene and communicate what is and is not acceptable behavior. Signs this may be happening include intense anger or crying, an abundance of negative self-talk, overly anxious about competing, cheating, withdrawal from friends and other 12
Our Kids Magazine | March 2017
activities, un-sportsmanlike conduct, and/or using performance enhancing drugs. 2. Talk through frustrations. If your child is upset about losing a competition, give him time to cool down before talking things over. Then find out why he was so upset. Reframe the situation: “What were the good things that happened on the field today?” “You didn’t win, but you did do good things, can you name a few?” Let him talk it out. Highlight his strengths and share how losing is an important part of playing too, and we learn things when we lose just like we do when we win. Remind him that competitions are meant to be fun, and failure isn’t fatal. 3. Emphasize fun. When fun is the main emphasis, it is better for children’s self image and feelings of self worth. It is better for their performance too. Studies show kids actually persist in activities much longer if they participate because they enjoy it, rather than trying to obtain a trophy or medal. CAMP GUIDE 4. Consider the coach. Attend and observe your child’s programs to make sure the coach or instructor is being fair and promoting fun, participation and cooperation over competition and winning. If he isn’t, talk with him. Remind him of the children’s ages and diplomatically tell him you think he is focusing too much on competition. Sometimes people just need to have it pointed out to them. If things don’t change, talk with other parents and see if there is a supervising organization you can speak with. Go up in the ranks if you need to.
Ten weeks of summer camps!

Come See What Everyone Is Talking About!
5. Avoid comparisons. Encourage your child to always do his best and compete against his own best performance, not against others. Be careful with personal comparisons too. Negative comparisons make a child feel inferior. Positive ones build a child up while putting others down. 6. Compliment publicly; criticize privately. Give fair and accurate feedback. If, during a competition, your child performs poorly, be honest but offer feedback in a positive way. Rather than say, “You did terribly today” say, “You can do better next time.” 7. Set goals. Encourage your child to set attainable goals by breaking down larger goals into smaller ones so he can feel a sense of accomplishment along the way. Have him monitor and chart progress then celebrate little successes along the way. Just make sure these goals are child driven, not adult driven. 8. Praise efforts. Emphasize fun, cooperation and teamwork over competition and final outcome. If his team loses, focus on the positive and remind him he needs to be a good loser and a good winner. Encourage him to congratulate the other team regardless of the outcome of the competition. 9. Look at self. Analyze your own feeling about your child’s participation in the activity. Children take cues from their parents and set the tone in how they view competition. If it is a sports program, be sure you don’t emphasize winning over sportsmanship, physical development, skill and fun. Also watch your expressions and body language as these can send powerful messages. Be realistic. Keep in mind his age and developmental level. 10. Be his cheerleader. Provide support and encouragement and let your child know you love him no matter how he performs.

The Mindful New Parent: 7 Things Every Baby Needs To Thrive By Christina Katz
From the moment our babies are conceived, parents are bombarded with messages about buying their happiness. But the reality is that the wellbeing of our children has little to do with purchasing the newest bouncy seat on the market or dressing them in adorable outfits to impress our friends on social media. Healthy, happy children are raised that way by caring, attentive parents. This means giving children our energy, attention, and love, not merely showering them with material things and documenting their most adorable moments. Just as a vitamin or mineral deficiency can lead to problems later in life, if we want to raise happy, confident children, parents need to focus on fulfilling the basic needs every baby has from birth onward. And babies are not the only ones with needs. Every person on earth longs to experience these seven feelings from the day we are born until the day we leave the world. By identifying the desires you have in common with your baby, you can become a more mindful parent.
1. A Solid Sense Of Security
Every baby needs to feel wanted. A child’s future ability to manage tension will be affected by how secure he feels during the first years of life. Parents also need to make sure they feel grounded after having a baby. I have heard that having a

baby is like having a bomb go off in your living room, and it can certainly feel that way sometimes. Financial insecurity, a lack of access to healthy food, and excessive stress can undermine your sense of rootedness. A baby needs to feel as if his primary caregiver is taking care of his every need. If childcare is needed, a secondary caregiver needs to give as much quality attention as a parent would. And then a parent may wish to invest extra affection after childcare to re-bond. Of course, every parent feels insecure sometimes. The key to staying grounded when parenthood throws you for a loop is to know how to manage tension when it happens. Have tools on hand that help you lower stress quickly and effectively like taking a walk outdoors. Sometimes the simplest habits are the most grounding. And remember, your goal is not to become a perfect parent; your goal is to have enough support to feel secure, so you can pass this quality on to your child.
2. A Natural Flow Of Emotions
Allowing your child to feel the way she feels begins at birth. Every baby expresses a range of feelings. If only positive feelings are allowable and negative feelings are discouraged, your baby will lose her natural emotional equilibrium. When we are older, so much of our ability to experience joy FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
depends on our ability to process our grief. If this process is disrupted during the first years of life, a child may struggle when she experiences future losses. Your child’s future ability to experience pleasure, intimacy, and create relationships hinges on her ability to get her emotional needs met in infancy. No one is asking you to be emotionally perfect. But try to process your emotions appropriately, so you can feel emotionally available for your baby’s ongoing needs. Find someone to talk to about the feelings you are having while parenting. Other outlets might include journaling, doodling, painting, or any other type of artistic practice that allows you to channel emotions. If you are expressing yourself regularly, you will have an easier time going with the flow of your child’s emotions.
At Sunshine Cottage, children with hearing loss and normal hearing grow and learn together in a nurturing and fun environment. All students experience the finest education available in South Texas with a low student-to-teacher ratio (7:1) and a hands-on approach to learning, encompassing all State standards.

3. Feelings Of Worthiness
Even though infants don’t do much more than eat, sleep and get their diapers changed, every baby needs to feel valued. From birth onward, your child needs help developing the foundation for his future abilities. This is why parents spend so much time encouraging little ones to do things like roll over, crawl, and walk. Your child might not appreciate his own progress as much without you positively mirroring it back. So go ahead and cheer for your child’s latest, age-appropriate accomplishment. You are not spoiling your baby; you are motivating him to tackle the next developmental challenge. 2016 ad.indd Of course, parents need to feel worthy of encouragement, as well. You will have your fair share of exhausted moments while parenting, so make an agreement with your partner to encourage each other to cope. If you focus on your relationship as a partnership and your family as a team, all of life’s many challenges will fall into their rightful places. Try laughing about how exhausted, overwhelmed, and under-assisted you feel, instead of taking it out on each other. Watching funny sitcoms reflecting where you are in your parenting adventure can be comforting. We all want to feel confident and in-control of our lives, and keeping a sense of humor can help us feel worthy of support, even during challenging times.
4. Giving & Receiving Love
To love and to be loved is what makes us human. Our ability to experience compassion for others, create harmony rather than strife, and cultivate a peaceful life on earth together can only happen when we learn to love and be loved during babyhood. This is why every baby needs to feel loved, and will happily love you back, when her needs are met. Of course,

parents need to be mindful that they do not use love as a weapon, withholding it in an effort to manipulate behavior or granting it to one child and withholding it from another out of favoritism. Love is not a tool and should not be used as one. Love is a condition of mutual openness, trust, and appreciation. If you act loving to your child but constantly bicker with your spouse, your baby is getting mixed messages about love. When you are a parent, the tone of your relationships matters, so try to set as moral, empathetic, and peaceful a tone as possible. If you and your partner struggle, get help from a professional or join a support group. Don’t ignore communication gaps and hope they will go away. If you face your relationship frustrations, they can grow smaller until they are bridgeable. Do your best to make quality time for you and your spouse. Plan around your baby’s schedule. Try an earlier bedtime or make the most of weekend nap times. Most couples experience some turbulence while adjusting to parenthood. Try to remember, couples that make time to connect have more harmonious marriages than couples that don’t.

5. Ability To Self-express
Babies make noise. They cry, squawk, gurgle-and this is only the beginning. Before you know it, they will be chanting ma-ma-ma, da-da-da and imitating the sounds that go with specific objects. If you don’t teach your child the basics building blocks of communication, and repeat words back over and over, he won’t learn as well or as quickly. Get a head start by communicating with your baby as early as in the womb. Parents are a child’s first teachers, so it may be helpful to think of communication with your baby as the beginning of a lifelong conversation. Sometimes, however, “baby talk” can get annoying. Parents may feel impatient from repeating rote information over and over without enough access to adult conversations throughout the day. So make sure you are allying yourself with adults who have either been in your shoes or who are in the same stage now, so you can regularly converse with people who get you. Consider joining mom-baby networking groups, playgroups or exercise groups to meet up with like-minded parents. You can also try writing letters or sending daily email updates if you prefer writing out your thoughts instead of always talking. If you can express your thoughts, you’ll be that much more available to converse in an age-appropriate manner with your developing baby.

6. Access to Intuition & Imagination Babies are not clay for us to shape and mold according to our will. They are born whole with personalities already intact. Our job as parents is to nurture our children so they can blossom into the people they wish to be. Parents who validate their child’s intuition and imagination can take comfort knowing that their future grown child will be able to rely on inner compasses to steer through life. Of course, parents need to access to their intuition and imagination, too. If you feel like you spend too much time in the real world dealing with adult responsibilities, why not let your child’s imaginative play lead you places you might not otherwise go? As your child grows, he will invite you into imaginary worlds where you can remember the power your own imagination once held. Even if you are not the fun parent in your partnership, you can likely still find playful areas of interest with your children if you let them lead the way.

7. Personal Spiritual Connection Children don’t come with guarantees of religious affiliation and some parents may struggle with this fact. If we want to honor children as empowered individuals, we have to let them make their future adult choices themselves. We should not imagine, as we introduce them to ideas as a child, that we are cinching their future choices. Until they can think like adults, we’d better prepare ourselves to turn over the reins little by little as our children grow up. Grown adults get to choose their gender, their sexual preference, and the ways they connect with a higher power. And parents today need to be prepared for this without judgment. The saying goes, there are many paths up the same mountain. As parents we need to prepare for the inevitable day when our child climbs the mountain by herself. Or, if she chooses not to climb any mountains at all right now, we may as well accept it. When we can look at the parenting process as a process of doing our best and then letting go, everything goes so much more smoothly. If we want to inspire our children to follow in our spiritual footsteps, we cannot force them-we can only inspire them with our example. When author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz harkens back to what it was like to be a new parent, she wishes that more parenting advice could have been this simple.

ONGOING EXHIBITS
Kids of all ages will love the Above and Beyond interactive exhibit now ongoing at the Witte. The exhibit runs through May 7.
San Antonio Botanical Garden
Art in the Garden is a yearlong exhibition at the Garden for which Shotz has conceived a newly commissioned large-scale, freestanding steel sculpture, Scattering Screen. It features small mirrored circles that “reflect light and scatter the visible surroundings into thousands of tiny pieces,” per the artist. Exhibit runs through June. Admission: $10 adults (14-64); $8 students, seniors, military; $7 children age 3-13; free for children under 3 and all members. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Institute of Texan Cultures
Painted Churches of Texas showcases more than two dozen intricately painted 19th century churches built by immigrants from Germany, the former Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, France, Spain, Mexico, and beyond. Using technology developed for NASA’s Mars Rovers, large-scale Gigapan photographs of the painted churches of Texas reveal astounding details along with our state’s rich history of immigrant artistry. Featuring images by Jim and Jane Whitcomb. Exhibit runs through March 5. Foreign by Land, Native by Heart tells the stories of four refugee families coming to San Antonio. Their accounts describe the conditions that caused them to flee their native countries, and how they have adapted to their new homes. The families profiled in the exhibit have come to Texas from Malaysia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. The exhibit will recount the circumstances of the refugee process, such as minimal luggage, a plastic bag containing the family’s vital records, and samples of the necessities and mementos they chose to bring with them

on the trip. Exhibit runs from through April 9. “1000 Parks and a Line in the Sky: Broadway, Avenue of the Future,” is a design vision by Antonio Petrov, UTSA assistant professor of architecture, and the “think/do-tank” he has established in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning. The exhibit features a 50-foot-long model of Broadway, a street that has the potential to become San Antonio’s great urban avenue. Recent developments on Broadway, such as the Museum Reach and the Pearl, and renewed interest in the street’s future have generated much discussion about what becoming an “urban” city actually means. In its present state, however, nearly fifty percent of Broadway’s urban landscape is flanked by parking space while nearly all spaces along the corridor are tied to businesses, leaving almost no public space for people to gather as citizens without being consumers. Petrov has conducted extensive research on Broadway and proposes a linear park system, comprised of unused interstitial spaces found along the street, and a skyride that connects the airport to Travis Park. Many residents and visitors to San Antonio remember experiencing the city from the sky between the 1960s and 1990s on the Brackenridge Park skyride. Inspired by this local history, he explores possible future directions for urban development, public parks, and alternative transportation systems using the Broadway corridor as a model. The interactive installation focuses on public input, while associated public events, roundtable discussions, photo collection events, and educational programming will bridge the past and future of Broadway to help the community imagine its new identity. Visitors are also able to experience a nostalgic moment by taking a seat in a gondola from the original Brackenridge skyride. Exhibit runs through April 16. Admission: $8 for adults (12-64); $7 for seniors (65+); $6 for children (3-11); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges To Advertise Call 305-4181

Each curator helped define Texas Art for the museum, the state, and the nation. Learn more about the Witte Museum’s renowned Texas Art Collection as you explore works from 19th and 20th century painters, folk artists and native artists that have been purchased for the permanent collection. Together these works provide a cross-section of the Texas Art Collection and also represent the powerful choices that continue to shape the collection today. Included with general admission. Parlour Games: Ruloff Kip’s Toy Theatre is an exhibit for kids of all ages. While vacationing at his Long Island country home in the winter of 1919, Ruloff Kip created a toy theatre for his young daughter, Elizabeth. The large, elaborate theatre features moving mechanisms, several working lighting schemes, and an array of set drops and cut-out characters, based on Kip’s house and family members. Long thought to be the work of artist Everett Shinn, recent research has uncovered interesting new perspectives on the theatre itself, as well as the fascinating background of its true creator and his family. Exhibit runs through March 12. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $5 for seniors (65+), students with I.D. (13+), and active duty military; and free for children ages 12 and younger and to all museum members.
