The Science of Giving and How It Can Help Your Kids By Sandi Schwartz
Want to really make your kids happy? Teach them the importance of giving to others. Contrary to common belief that kids need and want more “stuff ” to be happy, science tells us that it is the act of giving to others that actually boosts happiness and can even improve health and other areas of their lives.
Children Were Born To Give Believe it or not, children enter this world with a natural instinct to be compassionate to others. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute discovered that infants help others even though they are too young to have learned about being kind and polite. The children take action because of their own motivation, and not because they expect a reward. Actually, humans have evolved over time to be compassionate, and our brains are now wired to respond to those who are suffering. Kindness has become a “survival of the fittest” trait, as Charles Darwin even advised that “communities which included the greatest number of the most sympathetic members would flourish best, and rear the greatest number of offspring.” In other words, the better we get along and help each other out, the more successful our society will be. Do children continue to show compassion as they 6

grow? A breakthrough study by psychologists at the University of British Columbia determined that young children are happier to give than to receive. Toddlers who were asked to give away their own treats expressed greater happiness when they shared with others. The researchers interpreted the results of this study to mean that anytime people participate in pro-social behavior, such as volunteering and giving charitable donations, we experience an increase in happiness. Children have the foundation to be kind, but it’s our job as parents to continue to nurture this part of them as they grow. If we neglect to do so, negative life experiences can unfortunately tear down this beautiful instinct.
How Giving Transforms Our Kids Numerous studies have uncovered several ways that giving enhances our children’s lives. Boosts Happiness When we make others happy by giving a gift or our support, we experience a physiological change called a helper’s high. It is a euphoric physical sensation resulting from our brain releasing chemicals called endorphins. GETTING IN ON THE GIVING makes us feel good naturally, giving us a rush that leaves us elated and excited. This positive energy is similar to how we feel after exercising.
Improves Health Research shows that giving leads to better health. In his book Why Good Things Happen to Good People, Stephen Post, a professor of preventative medicine at Stony Brook University, explains that giving to others has been shown to increase health benefits in people with chronic illness. In addition, a 1999 study led by Doug Oman of the University of California, Berkeley suggests that giving may improve physical health because it helps reduce stress. Finally, a 2006 joint study by Johns Hopkins University and the University of Tennessee indicated that people who helped others had lower blood pressure than participants who did not. Promotes Social Connection Several studies suggest that when we give, our generosity is ultimately rewarded by others. These positive actions promote a sense of trust and cooperation that strengthens our relationships. Moreover, we feel a bond towards those who we help. All of this is important because having positive social interactions is central to good mental and physical health.
Encourages an Attitude of Gratitude When we give to those in need, we feel a sense of gratitude because it puts things in perspective. Volunteer work is a great opportunity for our children to appreciate what they have and gives them a glimpse of the broader world. Meanwhile, gratitude is another very important ingredient for happiness and good health. Gives Children the Opportunity to Inspire Others Those who are on the receiving end of a good deed typically want to pass along that positive feeling and help others. Researcher James Fowler at the University of California, San Diego found that just one act of kindness can inspire several more acts of kindness by others. In this case, children have the opportunity to be mentor to others, inspiring a chain of kindness and compassion. Best Ways To Teach Children About Giving Teaching our children how to pay it forward is easier than you may think. There are endless opportunities to volunteer as a family and to give our children meaningful experiences that will enhance both their lives and the individuals they help. Provide some options like babies, animals, people without homes, children who do not have families, students who need books, or the elderly. Talk about the different types of projects you can do to help those in need. For some inspiration, read books about giving and kindness to your children. Talk about the importance of charitable giving. If you choose to start a monetary collection for charity, consider creating or buying giving boxes for each child. Ask them to set goals about how much they would like to give throughout the year and which organizations they would like to donate to. Check in weekly or monthly throughout the year to see how close they are to reaching their goal. Help your children discover their passion. Our passion should drive how we give because when we are excited about a project, we can put all of our heart and soul into it. Also, when we care about what we are working on, we will get more out of it and feel happier. Help your children identify their talents, skills, and interests that they can put to good use. Give as a group. Volunteering during a community service event with others accentuates the happiness boost because you are also building social connections. Choose projects close to home. Giving to a place locally where you can actually see and experience the results is most effective. Studies have also found that we are happiest
when we give to a charity through a friend, relative, or social connection rather than simply making an anonymous donation to a cause half way around the world. Find ways to volunteer as a family. By volunteering as a family, you make giving a priority and build it into your children’s daily routine. There are so many ways that you can give together, and if you don’t find something out there that you love, create it yourself. You can find volunteer opportunities for your family by checking your local government website; searching for local charities in your area; asking friends and neighbors; or visiting sites like Idealist, VolunteerMatch, and JustServe. There is certainly no shortage of ways to help others. The next time you feel like your child’s playroom or bedroom closet is going to explode, ask them to fill a bag with items to give to kids who could really use them. By providing our children with opportunities to give, they will be happier and healthier and have the power to pass along that goodness to so many people. Age should never be a barrier to serving your community. Natural leadership is within us, and young leaders are masters in their own way, and have shown, how they display humanity, and to serve others. Activities can be weekly, monthly, or once a year. 12 Tips to Tame the Holiday Circus
Are holiday traditions, parties, volunteer commitments and shopping turning you into a frenzied ringmaster of a runaway circus train? For your sanity and for your health, put the brakes on the holiday rush. Here’s how.
1.
Make a “Not-to-Do” List. Consciously leave a few activities off the program this year. Ellie Griffin, a feminine vitality coach, says this is one of her favorite ways to reduce holiday stress. “I love having my clients do this exercise because it makes them realize how much of what they do doesn’t have an effect on the big picture of their lives,” she says.

End a tradition. Let go of rituals that are more work than fun or are no longer meaningful. Attempting to turn the holiday season into the greatest show on earth, could put your health at risk. According to the American Psychological Association, chronic stress can weaken your immune system making it harder to recover from illness and can cause heart disease, obesity and depression.

Catch your zzzs. You perform better when you’re well-rested. Strive for seven to eight hours of sleep, which can help you cope better with stress. “Poor sleep habits keep you jittery, irritable and feeling like you’re just dragging yourself around,” says Rosalie Moscoe, author 10

Choreograph the chaos. Organize your shopping trips. Ask for help from your significant other. When possible, buy gifts whenever you’re already out running errands. Make shipping presents a breeze by purchasing some online. After pounding the pavement, reward yourself with dinner out, pizza delivery, or a glass of wine by a cozy fire.

Clown around. During the holiday rush try not to schedule every free moment. “By pursuing pleasure in her life, a woman can not only enjoy a more fulfilling life, but in the process increase production of oxytocin, a hormone crucial to lowering stress hormones,” Griffin says. Go through your calendar and block out 15 to 30 minutes each day to do something just for your personal enjoyment, like a manicure, lunch with a friend, yoga, a nap, or reading a book.

Juggle less. Planning, cooking, cleaning and entertaining can test even the most talented acrobat. Host a light-hearted appetizer party instead of a serious dinner soiree. Rely on your safety net. “Ask for help! Get your family to help with cleaning up at home. Or, if you can, hire a cleaning person,” Moscoe says. “Take a break, be kind to yourself. There will always be something to finish-that’s life!”For casual parties, prepare the main dish and ask your friends if they can bring side items or desserts. Revel in the moment. Duck out of the buzzing fluorescent lights and long lines.Take an evening stroll to breathe in the cool December air and admire the holiday lights illuminating the streets. Allow the movement to calm your mind without further stressing your body.

Feed yourself right. Hunger and exhaustion can bring out the tiger in anyone. Eat wholesome, good mood foods with protein for energy. “Don’t bring extra cookies or chocolate into the house in advance of the holidays,” Moscoe says. “This will make you cranky, tired and cause fluctuations in blood sugar.”

Plan for surprises. Keep tricks up your sleeve for managing those last-minute gift exchanges. While running errands, purchase small gifts that you can stash. And, go ahead and store those extra cookies in the freezer for drop-in visitors.
Simplify decor. If holiday decor makes you sweat, swap time-consuming and expensive lights and ornaments for homemade decorations. Try making luminaries with your kids. Draw a star or tree on a lunchsize paper bag. Punch holes into the design and fill the bag with sand. Place battery-charged tea lights inside the bags and line them up on your porch or driveway. Focus on the magic. Carefully consider what makes the holidays special for you and your family. Ask your kids, too. Their answers may surprise you. Perhaps they’d like to try building gingerbread houses this year or want to spend a toasty evening in their pajamas drinking hot chocolate and watching seasonal movies. Most of all, resolve to bring your holidays from over the big top to just right for you. Even one small change can make all the difference between anxiously counting the days until the show is over to living in the moment while celebrating more peace and joy with your family this season. Bring the Family Closer: Winter Resolutions that Inspire Togetherness

Winter is a quiet time for reflection. As the embers of holiday cheer fade, it allows us to see the things that need to be fixed. No, I am not referring to that cabinet door in the kitchen or the leaky faucet in the bathroom. According to a recent survey, the average family spends only 34 minutes together on weekdays. If you are surprised to find your own family fits into that statistic, there is no need to panic. Like fresh fallen snow, winter gives us a chance at new beginnings. Take advantage of winter’s slower pace to reconnect with each other. If need some inspiration, take a look at these 12 ideas.
1.
Volunteer together – Working together for a cause makes a family closer. Whether you have been touched by a foundation’s work or just want to make a difference, it is nice way to spend time together as a family. Try running a family friendly 5K or support your local Ronald McDonald house by preparing a meal.
2.
Engage in creativity together – Gather around the kitchen table and work on coloring pages. Build houses out of Legos or take a painting class together. 12

Expressing yourself through art not only helps to relieve stress, but it’s a fun activity that you can do over and over.

Go outside – No matter what the weather, find time to connect with the family outdoors. On sunny days, you can go for a bike ride or play soccer in the backyard. If you live near snow, build a snowman. If it’s raining, grab your umbrella and take a walk. Taking in the fresh air will clear your mind of everyday distractions and make room for new memories.

Several cooks in the kitchen – Think back to the holidays when everyone was working together to prepare a meal you would all enjoy. Cooking dinner together helps the picky eaters to see what ingredients go into the meal and gives the normal cook a few extra hands.
5.
Unplug after 5:00 – Work emails, social media and random texts interrupt family time unnecessarily. With the exception of online homework or a FaceTime call with Grandma, there is no reason that a family has to spend the evening staring into their phones. Practice random acts of kindness – Doing a kindness to someone, especially someone not expecting it, will make both the giver and receiver feel good. Help the people in your house by doing a chore without being asked, handing over the TV remote to someone else or giving up the best seat in the car.

Date nights – While this may not sound like a family event, it is equally important for families to have one on one time with each of its members. This is true for the adults in the family as well as Mom and Me type dates with each child. Be sure to double the family fun by planning a special evening at home for those staying behind.

Slow down – There is something to be said about the families of yesteryear who sat around the radio and listened to the story. They had to use their own imagination to visualize the characters. Try to recreate the same impact by listening to a book on CD and putting together a puzzle together while you listen.

Spark conversation at dinner – Go beyond “How was your day?” to ask and answer thought provoking questions like “What features do you think will be on cars in ten years?” You can also play a game asking everyone how well they know each other. Ask the family if they know the name of Joey’s tutor or what Dad’s job title is.

You plan it night – Once a week, one person will plan the way the family will spend the night together. They will choose the menu and an activity (all within a set budget, of course). Even elementary aged students can make a shopping list from a recipe and look online for movie times.

Set a goal and work on it together – Winter resolutions often include changing a bad habit. Let everyone set their goal – lose 10 lbs, go to the gym 3 times a week, bring my math grade up – and once a week at dinner check in to see how everyone is doing. Share the ups and downs of your progress and lean on your family for support or suggestions.

Visit with the extended family – Continue to grow the family ties long after the holidays are over. Plan outings with the cousins, a couple’s dinner with the aunts and uncles or a regular game night with the siblings. I am sure you want your holidays to be memorable and not overwhelming, and this can feel like a delicate balance baby’s first year. To keep things festive rather than frantic, put your family’s needs first and then consider extended family’s expectations. Here’s how to share your new blessing generously yet judiciously, so everyone can enjoy this special time of year - including baby.

glee. Rather than a long annual Christmas letter, perhaps a card with baby’s photo is enough. Instead of creating a huge cookie plate, how about suggesting a cookie swap with your mom group? Perhaps decline a few holiday party invitations and choose the most baby-friendly ones. Now that baby is the center of your family, don’t feel pressured to do everything you have always done.
Re-prioritize expectations. Traditions loom large during the holidays but you don’t have to celebrate every season the same way. During the first year with baby, you will encounter new limits on your time and energy that you may not have imagined. Consider your family’s priorities before you plan. Be honest with yourself and your spouse about what you want baby’s first holidays to feel like. And then make that dream a reality by communicating what works for you with extended family.
Research stages. Whether you decide to travel cross-country or stay home and nest, consider baby’s age and temperament. Do your homework online and collect as much information as you can about the challenges associated with baby’s upcoming stages of development. No matter what your circumstances, planning a joyful holiday starts with accepting the things you cannot change - like your baby’s needs at a particular age. If you manage your expectations, you can relax your way through the holidays, instead of stressing your way though them.
Refresh routines. The holidays are always a cause for celebration but when you’ve got a baby in tow, the season shifts into a slower gear. As a parent, you may wish to give up some traditional tasks that you would normally tackle with

list with family in whatever way feels most appropriate. Don’t be surprised if you get more than enough support over the holidays simply because you asked for it.
Retreat often. Your baby does not care that it’s time for the extended family feast. So expect interruptions and have an exit plan in mind if unexpected meltdowns occur. When baby is upset, you might have the impulse to apologize. But put yourself in baby’s booties. A cross-country trip, a strange house, people poking and prodding non-stop... wouldn’t all of this make you feel cranky? Tantrums will pass more quickly if you stay in tune with baby and filter out expectations of everyone else. Remember that adults are perfectly capable of managing their own moods. Simplify traditions. Keep traditions as simple as possible this year. Sitting in a dim room gazing at the twinkly lights is the kind of new tradition you can eagerly embrace. Here are few other simple ideas. Read a holiday book aloud before bedtime. Take your time getting out of bed in the morning. Take after-lunch naps. Babyhood is fleeting. Slow down and squeeze all the sacredness you can out of this special season. Having baby at the center of your holidays will only make each moment more special.
Stay detached. Aunt Franny may have strong opinions about child rearing and Uncle Peter may be known for low tolerance of the pitter-patter of little feet. But you are the parent now. Take care of yourself first, then your child, and then your immediate family. Stick to this plan even when you are with extended family. If relatives disagree with your child-raising philosophies, take a bemused but detached stance. Families are usually more diverse than we remember, especially when it comes to opinions. Allow others their points of view, while staying loyal to your parenting instincts. Capture joy. A lot of energy goes into posed photos during the holiday season, but don’t forget to take advantage of candid photo opportunities with baby. Your little one will never be the star of the show quite like this again. Those first moments when friends and family meet baby will elicit grins and glee. When baby is happy, relaxed and smiling, get your camera out and click away. Photos of loved ones with baby make convenient thank you notes you can send over email after you return home. Christina Katz remembers the exhausted glory of being a new parent as a time when getting through the day was a triumph, never mind traveling across the country at the same time.
