First of all, I would like to thank Laura Warner for helping us out these past few months during our busy time of the year and we all wish her the best in her new career. I would also like to thank everyone who attended and participated in our Camp Fair, it was a lot of fun and we hope to see everyone again next year. In case you missed it, you can still get information about local/away camps by accessing our online camp directory or flipping over to this month’s camp guide to read “Capture the Benefits of Sports Camps” by Gayla Grace. Nancy Reagan’s passing last month started me thinking about my childhood and when I started taking notice of politics. These days it’s hard for your children not to hear news about politics and politicians on TV, radio or online. At one point or another your children will start asking questions about politics and Denise Yearian has some pointers for parents in her article “10 Tips for Raising Politically-Savvy Kids.” Another hot topic in the news lately is the Zika Virus. With the summer right around the corner and mosquitoes getting more plentiful and active, it’s a good time to brush up on the facts about this disease and its impact on moms-to-be. “What Pregnant American Women Need to Know About Zika Virus” by Alexa Bigwarfe is a must read for all pregnant mothers, as well as an update from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District on local cases of the virus. Having our kids eat healthy is always a big concern for parents. This month’s article is “Healthy Meals for Kids,” Renee Haines gets advice from local organizations for families, along with 10 Healthy Meals Tips from the Culinary Education for Families (CHEF) program. It’s that time of year again, time to Fiesta all over town and like every year we have selected the more family-friendly events to list in this month’s calendar. We also have some concert ticket giveaways to the Kidz Bop Tour. Check out our calendar for more information.

10 Tips for Raising Politically-Savvy Kids By Denise Morrison Yearian
Election year presents the perfect opportunity to teach children about political affairs and influence the next generation of voters. Even young children can cultivate an interest in politics, if parents include them in conversations and engage them in everyday activities. Why not start a grassroots effort to foster political awareness in your children? Here are 10 tips to help.
1.
Start simple. Introduce concepts that can be built upon over time. Discuss what responsibility is and what they may be learning in history class. Talk about leaders and authority figures in your home and community. Show your child pictures of those in the political spotlight and discuss what form of leadership he/she holds or is campaigning for.
2.
Reason with relevance. Talk about how government affects your child’s life right now through everyday things – regulations on items they use or money needed for places they frequent such as parks and libraries.
3.
Challenge to change. Show your child he has the ability to affect change. For example, identify a neighborhood problem, such as a littered park, and talk 6
Our Kids Magazine | April 2016
about what he can do to bring improvement. Encourage him to write a letter to a local, state and national politician about the issue of concern. Children usually receive a letter in return, particularly from local and state officials, and this will encourage them to continue their efforts.
4.
Reach for resources. Use juvenile literature such as biographies and historical and fiction works as a springboard for discussions and to hone their understanding of governmental affairs. Kid-friendly political and civic-oriented websites, such as www.cnn.com/studentnews, have information and activities to teach children about government and current affairs.
5.
News you can use. Watch the news and political debates, and read the newspaper aloud then discuss it together. Explain political cartoons and encourage your child to create her own cartoons based on issues important to her.
6.
Value volunteering. Participate in community family volunteer opportunities throughout the year and during campaign time. Parents and children can help with Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA
neighborhood mailings, drop off literature, distribute buttons or put up campaign signs.
7.
Encourage early election encounters. Encourage your child to run for school or class office. This will give him a jump-start on leadership roles and is a tangible way to teach him about the campaigning process. Suggest school and extracurricular groups hold mini debates to introduce political concepts.
8.
Since 1980
Design day trips. Take trips to state and national historical and governmental sites. If possible, make prior arrangements to meet with representatives. Have your child make a list of questions to ask officials before leaving home.
Age Appropriate Curriculum Bible Stories & Chapel Pre-K Program for 4’s & 5s
9.
Optional Activities: • Dance Class • Computer Class • Gymnastics • Spanish • Piano
Model and mentor. Let your child see you reading the newspaper, watching the news, being active in civic volunteering and voting. Take her with you to vote and familiarize her with voting processes. Unspoken modeling has a lasting effect.
10.
Be consistent. Studies show that parents who regularly discuss political issues with their kids have a better chance of raising politically minded children. -Denise Morrison Yearian is a former educator, editor of two parenting magazines, and the mother of three politically minded children and four grandchildren.
HANDS-ON ELECTION ACTIVITIES Best-One-Wins Ballot Box: Cover a shoebox and lid with white paper and secure with tape. Use construction paper and star stencils to trace over and cut out various sized stars. Glue these to the top and sides of the box and lid. Embellish other parts of the box with markers, stickers and glitter, if desired. Cut a slit in the box lid and place it over the box bottom. Provide slips of paper so everyone who comes into your house can vote for their favorite candidate. On Election Day count the ballots and see who wins! Winsome Windsock: Use a pencil, ruler and scissors to measure and cut the poster board to be 10- by 18-inches. On one side of the poster board write a political message. Decorate with symbols and stickers. When finished, roll the long side of the poster board into a cylinder shape and staple the ends to hold in place. Attach red and blue crepe paper streamers to the bottom end of the cylinder with a stapler. Punch two holes directly across from one another around the top and thread yarn through. Place the windsock on a porch or tree where it will catch a breeze. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

CAMP GUIDE
Capture the Benefits of Sports Camp By Gayla Grace
“My kids have never been to camp.” I almost spewed my drink when the mom of seven told me she doesn’t see the value of sending kids to camp. “Really?” My answer was short but my mind was reeling as I assessed what her kids miss each summer by never experiencing camp. Camp has a unique way of teaching kids their value while giving them opportunities of fun they would never experience at home. Sports camps, in particular, offer new adventures as kids explore hidden abilities or build on already-developed skills while making new friends and learning life skills in the process. Sports camps offer benefits that extend far beyond the basics of practicing a sport.
Character-building opportunities.
Sports camps teach kids what perseverance feels like and what it means to reach outside their comfort zones. “Sports themselves are great for the physical aspect but also teach sportsmanship, camaraderie and discipline,” says Matt Davanzo, director of an all sports academy. Tennis pro Eric Fromm says sports, particularly tennis, help kids develop skills they can use their entire lives. “These skills carry over into school work and life skills -- dealing with adversity, problem solving, overcoming obstacles, focusing, learning how to lose and pick yourself up.”
Exercise.
Childhood and adolescent obesity rates continue to climb and lack of exercise contributes significantly to the problem. Technology seduces kids to stay indoors and in front of a screen. Sports camps offer a great alternative as kids choose what sports they›re interested in and reap the rewards of exercise in the process. Eric Fromm lists the number one reason to send kids to camp is because «kids are meant to be active over the summer.» Regular exercise doesn›t happen naturally, however; there must be planning, intentional effort, and encouragement from parents.
Fun.
The fun of summer break wanes if days drag on with

nothing to do. Sports camps provide fun and learning at the same time. They often include high school and college students who work with kids in a playful and energetic manner, creating a natural atmosphere for fun.
New friends.
Kids find new friends at sports camp who share similar interests and often go to the same school. When our family re-located to another state during the summer months, our elementary-age son found new friends through a baseball camp that helped him acclimate to his new school in the fall. CAMP GUIDE Kids experience natural and friendly camaraderie with others through sports camps.
Focus on specific skill-building techniques.
An athlete gains more confidence and greater ability in his sport by working on the mechanics of a sport repetitively. Playing a sport through the school year doesn›t incorporate everyday skill-building repetition like camps do. As kids move through middle school and high school, it›s particularly important they improve in their sport to stay competitive.
Find new sports of interest.
Sports camps are the perfect place to explore sports that a child hasn’t tried before or aren’t always offered at school, such as tennis or soccer. With a friendly camp staff and encouraging environment, kids are less intimidated and more likely to seek new interests.
Develop healthy life-long habits.
Through regular exercise at sports camps, kids also develop accompanying habits of discipline, commitment and responsibility. These habits translate into leadership skills and strong work ethics when kids begin to move into career-minded opportunities in their middle and high school years.

Give parents a break.
Whether you›re a stay-at-home mom, work-at-home dad, or in the workforce outside the home, sports camps give parents a chance to take their mind off their child and focus on their own needs and wants for a change. Every parent deserves a break from the 24/7 parenting responsibilities that summer warrants. As a mom to five children, I’ve watched our kids emerge from summer sports camps with enthusiasm for a new sport, rediscovered self-confidence, like-minded friendships and regular exercise habits that propelled them into a new school year. While unplugged from technology in an active environment, sports camps offer friendly competition and valuable life lessons for kids. Camp counselor Jodi Lorane says camp increases kids’ self-esteem as they try new things, taking them outside their comfort zones and forcing them to work through their fears. Lorane also says kids at camp get acquainted with those who come from varying home situations which allows them to see the world through different eyes. Sports camps create life-long memories amidst fun, learning, and exercise. Don’t wait! Find a sports camp for your child and watch them thrive.

CAMP GUIDE
Say “Yes” to the Mess Six Outdoor Activities By Sandi Haustein
Being the mother of three boys, I am well-acquainted with mess. That’s not to say I like it. So often I say “no” when my boys want to do something out-of-the-box messy, but my mom heart feels guilty because I know how much fun it would be. Moms like me avoid shaving cream fights or stomping through mud puddles because let’s face it – kids are messy enough without giving Mom something else to clean up. Karie Fager, a mother of four, believes that giving your kids messy experiences every now and then makes it easier for the times when you say, “Not today.” Allowing kids to experiment with the gooey and the sticky gives them opportunities to explore different textures, create fun memories, and experience the thrill of doing something that’s typically off-limits. To help your kids create some messy memories, consider one of these outdoor activities that only require hosing off and changing clothes when it’s time to clean up. Water Play. Getting wet is one of the easiest ways for kids (and moms) to ease their way into messy play. Fill a bucket with water, give your child some paint brushes, and let him “paint” the driveway, house, and deck. Or turn on a sprinkler and lay out a Slip n’ Slide for hours of water fun.

CAMP GUIDE Mentos Experiment. You might have seen the choreographed Mentos and Diet Coke YouTube video, but your kids will get a kick out of creating their own Mentos geyser. Open a 2-liter of Diet Coke, drop in three or four mintflavored Mentos candies, and jump back as the soda spews up like fireworks. Outdoor Painting. For her son’s fourth birthday party, Wendy Kimmey created a giant painting experience for the young guests by setting up a large canvas on top of a plastic painter’s drop cloth. The kids dipped textured balls into paint and then rolled or threw the balls on the canvas to make a one-of-a-kind painting. To give your kids their own chance to paint in the great outdoors, pick up some washable, nontoxic tempura paint, hang up a dollar store shower curtain or a huge canvas, and let them unleash their inner Monet. Jello Balloons. Take your typical water balloon fight to a whole new level by filling the balloons with Jello instead. Follow the directions for making gelatin on the box but before chilling, use a funnel or a turkey baster to pour (or squirt) the Jello mixture into the balloons. Place them carefully in a fridge to set, then surpise your kids with a sticky, colorful fight that no one will be expecting. Whipped Cream Pies. Help your kids draw a large body on a piece of cardboard and cut out a hole for the face.
Next, make a batch of whipped cream and spread it into pie pans. Give your children turns putting their heads through the cardboard hole while the others take turns smashing the whipped cream “pies” in their faces. Carolyn Brednich, a mom of four boys who borrowed this messy tradition from Mexico, says this activity is one of her family’s favorite memories. “Some of my boys were crying because they were scared to be covered in white, but the others loved smearing whipped cream all over themselves.” Don’t be surprised if your kids abandon the cardboard body and start “pie-ing” each other right and left. “Snowball” Fight. Winter isn’t the only time of year you and your kids can enjoy snowy fun. On a cookie sheet or in a large bowl, mix together two boxes of cornstarch and one can of shaving cream. Help your children carefully mold the soft, fluffy mixture into an arsenal of “snowballs” and watch their faces light up when you yell, “Ready, aim, fire!” By keeping the mess outside, these six activities will give your kids (and mine) the freedom to have fun while keeping the clean-up to a minimum for Mom. In twenty years, when my kids are grown, I hope they won’t remember the times I didn’t let them make a mess. Instead, I hope they say to each other, “Remember that time Mom pelted us with Jello balloons?” Sandi Haustein is a mom to three boys and a baby girl who are helping her broaden her messy limits.

Healthy Meals for Kids By Renee Haines
How to get them to say “Yes” to the good stuff
When it comes to getting kids to eat healthy meals, Chef Glenn Hall-Jones is not above being a little bit sneaky about it. He will show his young San Antonio students how to make a delicious fruit smoothie, and then slip in the celery and spinach. “The kids will say it’s green; it shouldn’t be green. But they’ll try it and say, hey, it’s pretty good,” says the nutrition education coordinator for the San Antonio Food Bank. He will add butternut squash to traditional macaroni and cheese. “It’s the same color as mac and cheese,” he says. “Then I add broccoli, and they say, that shouldn’t be in there.” The chef keeps kids interested by offering cooking lessons served up with dollops of information about nutrition and how food grows. “For me, it’s getting the kids to go for the more hands-on experience,” says Hall-Jones. “I bring them into the kitchen and teach them how to cook food.” He teaches his third- and fourth-grade classes about the five basic food groups by using ingredients from all five to make tostadas. Instead of putting broccoli on a plate and saying, eat this, he allows the kids to cut stalks from an outside garden first to learn how it grows. “We teach them about farmers markets,” he says. When it comes to taste, Hall-Jones goes by the three strikes rule, usually offering an ingredient three times at bat with the kids. “If you don’t like it after three times, you’re probably not going to like it,” he says. But before that third strike, the goal is to enforce positive comments from kids. Instead of saying that’s gross, kids will be encouraged to say, ‘It’s not for my palate today,’” he says. The San Antonio Food Bank incorporates gardens in its programs for kids as part of its mission to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, education and advocacy. The food bank distributed nearly 50 million pounds of food in 2013 alone through more than 500 partner agencies. Hall-Jones, mindful that healthy food can cost more than unhealthy processed foods, focuses his work with kids on inexpensive ways to prepare healthy meals. Families can buy in bulk to save money, he says, and they can focus on inexpensive ingredients like eggplants.
It takes a community
Healthy eating is a community responsibility, too, says Dr.

Our Kids Magazine | April 2016
Amelie G. Ramirez, director of Salud America!, a national Latino childhood obesity prevention program based at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. “To boost healthy meal consumption, we have to change the food environment,” she says, adding that all parents can become advocates for change. Public schools have been adopting healthier lunch menus. Ramirez says San Antonio’s North East Independent School District has expanded this approach by offering healthier menu options at concession stands during student sports games and other after-school events. “With the support of various school district leaders, parents and also students, the new Right Bites menu extends the district’s already-strong wellness policy to after-school hours, and allows healthier items for students and parents,” she says. In neighborhoods with plenty of fast-food restaurants, but too few supermarkets and farmers markets, parents can lobby local government agencies to make changes through zoning ordinances and land-use planning policies. Meanwhile, more fast-food chains are adopting healthier kids’ menus and replacing sugary soft drinks with milk or juice options, continued Ramirez. “In Latino neighborhoods, kids’ body weight outcomes improved when the number of chain supermarkets increased, and when in close proximity to grocery stores with healthy options, studies showed,” she says. Proximity to farmers markets has been linked to greater consumption of fruits and vegetables, she added. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA
Recipe resources
At Salud-America.org, parents and kids can find healthy kid-tested recipes from The Lunch Box, a national program for schools and families. The website also has a downloadable cookbook from The Children’s Health Fund with inexpensive healthy meal recipes for microwave ovens. Kids ages 5 to 12 can join the online Chop Chop Cooking Club that offers a new kid-friendly recipe each month, as well as prizes and virtual badges for completing kid-centric food knowledge challenges, according to Ramirez. The U.S. Agriculture Department offers kid-friendly recipes at ChooseMyPlate.gov. The Culinary Education for Families (CHEF) program at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio offers healthy recipes at CHOFSA.org/chef. Kids and caretakers can also visit healthy eating websites like PBSKids. org and SuperHealthyKids.com. Ramirez says parents can sign up at the Salud America website to receive regular updates on evolving local and national healthy meals and exercise programs. “You can enter your address to see what changes are happening in your backyard,” she says. ■■Control “the supply lines.” Don’t let kids choose less nutri-
tious foods.
■■Let kids make occasional choices. “This may seem like a
little too much freedom. But if you follow Step 1, your kids will be choosing only from the foods you buy and serve,” advises the program’s website. ■■Forget the “clean-plate rule,” and let kids stop eating when they feel full. “When kids notice and respond to feelings of fullness, they’re less likely to overeat.” ■■Start when they’re young. “Food preferences are developed early in life, so offer variety.” ■■Don’t just stick with the kids’ menu when eating out. “You can start by letting them try a little of whatever you ordered or ordering an appetizer for them to try.” ■■Monitor drink calories. Think water and milk instead of high-calorie soda. “Juice is fine when it’s 100 percent, but kids don’t need much of it — 4 to 6 ounces a day is enough for preschoolers.” ■■Don’t make sweets a prize. “When dessert is the prize for eating dinner, kids naturally place more value on the cupcake than the broccoli.” ■■Use hugs instead of food to reward kids. Otherwise, “they may start using food to cope with stress or other emotions.” ■■Be a role model. “Eat healthy yourself,” advises the website. Limit TV and online time. “When you do, you’ll avoid mindless snacking and encourage activity.” Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

What Pregnant American Women Need to Know About
By Alexa Bigwarfe
You have probably heard of the Zika virus by now. For pregnant women, it is especially terrifying. The information is changing quickly, and while at this point you are NOT likely to contract the Zika virus in the United States, the type of mosquitoes that transmit the virus, (Aedes mosquitoes) are found in warmer climates of the U.S. It’s expected that 4 million people will contract the Zika virus in 2016 in the Americas. The outbreaks are more likely in tropical zones – southern regions in the U.S. – and the U.S. will not likely see an outbreak until the warmer months when mosquitoes are more active. While your odds are low of contracting the virus, (unless you travel to one of the countries listed in the travel advisory), it’s still important to know how to protect yourself and your unborn baby. The Zika virus is a mild disease in most cases and rarely results in severe illness or death, but it can be very dangerous for pregnant women’s babies. This is because when a pregnant mother is infected, the fetus can be infected, causing the rare birth defect Microcephaly. This is a neurological condition causing babies to be born with small heads and, sometimes, small brains. The condition can also cause other life threatening developmental issues and death. If a mother is infected in the first trimester, the baby has the highest risk of extreme issues. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is still studying the virus and trying to understand all outcomes that may increase risk to the fetus and any outcomes associated with infection during pregnancy.
Symptoms of Zika Virus
Most commonly the symptoms include fever, rash,
24
Our Kids Magazine | April 2016
headaches, red eyes, muscle and joint pain, and pain behind the eyes. But, 4 out of 5 people infected will not show symptoms. Zika is not contagious, and is mostly spread through mosquito bites. However, it can be spread through sexual intercourse, according to experts, so if your significant other has recently traveled to one of the places on the travel warning, use protection throughout the duration of the pregnancy.
Is there a treatment or test? There is no treatment for the Zika virus; however, if you are pregnant and you or your partner have traveled to an affected country, ask your doctor to administer a blood test to detect the virus. If it’s positive or inconclusive, an amniocentesis may be done to check the baby for infection. Additional ultrasounds will also be administered to check for signs of microcephaly throughout the pregnancy. For more info on testing, see the CDC flow chart. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/65/wr/ mm6505e2er.htm
Can it be prevented? There is no vaccine for the Zika virus. The best thing you can do is to protect yourself from being bitten by mosquitos. This includes wearing long pants and sleeves, staying indoors during peak mosquito times, and using mosquito repellant (which is safe and recommended during pregnancy), and not traveling to countries on the travel advisory.

Metro Health Investigates Additional Zika Exposures SAN ANTONIO (Mar. 11, 2016) – The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District updated today the latest case information of Zika in Bexar County. There are still three confirmed Zika cases. There are now a total of 26 individuals under investigation for possible infection. Six additional individuals’ test results came back negative from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The delay in test responses from CDC is a common occurrence throughout the nation, given that one laboratory is processing all samples from across the country. The CDC also recently expanded its case guidelines, creating a higher number of samples to test.

Zika summary:
■■ 3 confirmed cases ■■ 26 pending investigation ■■ 6 test result was negative
In accordance with CDC guidelines, gender or pregnancy status will not be released along with case information and updates in order to protect the privacy of these individuals. The three individuals with confirmed cases acquired the infection while traveling abroad. The Zika virus is part of the same family as the viruses that cause yellow fever, West Nile, Chikungunya and dengue. Zika is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It can also be transmitted from a pregnant mother to her baby during pregnancy or around the time of birth. In rare cases, it can be transmitted through sexual activity or blood transfusion. For people who get sick, the illness is usually mild. For this reason, many people might not realize they have been infected. Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Symptoms typically begin 2 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Due to a possible link between infection during pregnancy and microcephaly in the infant, pregnant women are strongly advised to delay travel to Zika-affected areas. If travel is unavoidable they should take extra precautions to prevent mosquito bites. See your healthcare provider if you are pregnant and have traveled to a Zika-affected area within the last 12 weeks. Also if you develop a fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes within two weeks after traveling. Be sure to tell your health care provider where you traveled. Two Productions Aimed at Moms Come to SA in April
This month brings two special productions to San Antonio that parents may want to enjoy without the kids in tow. First, “Listen To Your Mother” is a series of original readings performed live on stage by their authors. The mission of this production is to take the audience on a well-crafted journey that celebrates and validates mothering through giving voice to motherhood–in all of its complexity, diversity, and humor. The April 23 local show will donate a percentage of ticket proceeds to Child Advocates of San Antonio. For more information, go to https://www.tobincenter.org/box-office/2016-04/listen-your-mother. Also, the Tobin Center will present “Secrets of a Soccer Mom” on April 7 through 17. Secrets of a Soccer Mom questions the culture of sitcoms, mommy blogs and marketing platitudes, and forges a salute, a confession, and a call to action as three engaging women reluctantly take the field in a mothers vs. sons soccer game, intending to let the children win. As the game unfolds, these soccer moms turn from sideline supporters into fierce competitors intent on scoring. A visceral contest reveals the characters’ desire to reignite the good humor, independence and sexuality of their youth, before the responsibilities of motherhood took over. Details can be found at https://www.tobincenter.org/box-office/2016-04/secrets-soccer-mom
Cinderella and Fairy Godmother Team Up For Prom Dresses A local production is going the extra mile to help out area kids this month. The Fairy Godmother Project and the company of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella are pleased to announce that through April 10, donations of formal and semi-formal dresses for teens as well as shoes, purses and costume jewelry will be accepted at the Majestic Box Office and Lifeway Christian Book Store at The Rim. The Fairy Godmother Project is a nonprofit founded and helmed by Carmen De La Rosa. It provides San Antonio high school girls with prom dresses if they can’t afford them. Pujol’s Walk#1 (2005-06) premiered at the McNay in 2006 and was subsequently acquired by the museum. Through photographs and artifacts, Pujol takes the viewer on a meditative walk through a Southern cemetery, observing a solitary robed figure as he encounters the cemetery’s natural views and architectural details. Skoglund’s The Cocktail Party (1992) recreates this domestic ritual using bright orange junk food snacks covering figures, furniture, walls, and floor.
