What comes to mind in April for most San Antonians is Spring cleaning, Magazine Fiesta and Easter celebrations. Before your kids get out their Easter baskets to hunt down some eggs and load up on treats, be sure to read Denise Yearian’s article on pre-Easter “egg-stra” special activities for the whole family! Easter is the perfect time for kids to get involved in the kitchen and help Magazine mom with a little cooking or give dad a hand with some grilling outdoors. This month Sarah Lyons gives 6 great reasons why you should cook with your kids and the educational benefits it entails. Who doesn’t remember building a fort when they were a child, whether it was indoors or outdoors. In this month’s “Camp and Summer Activities” section, Jan Pierce shows how parents can support their kid’s creative efforts and embark on the adventure of building a fort which will give them hours for Summer fun! Also included in this month’s camp section is Ashley Talmadge’s article on how special needs children can build self-esteem and confidence from attending camps too! Ashley advises on planning well and following a few simple guidelines when choosing a camp for children with special needs. Don’t know where to go for Easter this year, well check out our “Eggcellent Easter Events” in this month’s calendar. Other fun events include Bubble Fest in CHRISpark, Ballet in The Park, Fiesta Pops, and The Annual HEB Buddy Run.
Happy Reading!

Easter Extravaganza By Denise Morrison Yearian
Spring is a time to celebrate the renewal of life and nature. This year Easter falls on April 16. Before the month slips away, crack open your calendar and peel away some time for these “egg-stra” special activities.
Earthy Egg Heads Items needed: egg shells; permanent markers; dirt or potting soil; grass seed; toilet paper roll; stickers.
Crack a raw egg around the upper section of the shell. Peel the opening and remove the egg. Rinse the shell and let it dry. Carefully draw a face on the front of the egg. Now fill it half full with dirt. Sprinkle grass seed on top and cover with a little more dirt. To make a base for your egg head, cut off a small section of the toilet paper roll and decorate with markers and/or stickers. Place the egg on the base. Every day sprinkle a little water over the dirt. Within a week or so “hair” will begin to grow.
Edible Egg Dye Items needed: empty egg shells; vinegar; six pans; natural dyes (purple grape juice [purple], blueberries [blue], spinach leaves [green], lemon

peel or ground cumin [yellow], yellow onion skins [orange], cranberries [pink]).
Add one natural dye ingredient to each pan, along with water and bring to a boil. Let it cool. Strain the dye ingredient so only liquid is left. Place egg shells in each pan along with the colored dye. Add enough water and two teaspoons of white vinegar to cover the eggs (note do not add vinegar to the pan that had onion skins). Bring each pot to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Let the eggs sit until they reach the desired color then remove from the pans and let dry.
Cascarone Craze Items needed: empty egg shells; egg cartons; dye; funnel; confetti; scissors; 2 ½-square pieces of tissue paper; glue.
Cascarones, also known as confetti eggs, originated in Old Mexico. Several weeks in advance, begin saving egg shells. When cracking open a raw egg, break around the upper section of the shell. Peel the opening so the hole is no more than 1-inch around. Remove the egg. Rinse the shell, let it dry hole side down then store it in an empty carton. When you have a dozen empty FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
egg shells, dye them using the conventional or natural method. When dry, place the eggs back into the carton with the hole side up. Use a funnel to fill each egg about half full with confetti. Apply glue to the outer edges of a 2 ½-inch square tissue paper and cover the holes. On Easter give everyone a confetti-filled egg, then follow tradition by chasing each other around and cracking the egg on one another’s head for good luck. Better yet, use them for egg tosses, relay races and other games.
Threaded Egg Items needed: balloon; watered down glue; disposable bowl; paintbrush; crochet thread.
Blow up a balloon, tie it off and attached a two-foot long piece of crochet thread at the knot. Use a paintbrush to cover the balloon with watered down glue. Wrap the thread around the balloon in one direction leaving small gaps so the balloon isn’t completely covered. Cut off another section of thread and set aside. Add another layer of glue over the existing thread and balloon. Now take the second strand of thread and wind it around the balloon, this time in the other direction. Repeat these steps until you have four layers of thread covering the balloon. Hang the balloon upside down to dry. When completely dry, pop the balloon and carefully remove it without pulling at the thread. Hang up the threaded egg for decoration. Denise Morrison Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren.
Crackin the facts…
Eggs have been used during Easter celebrations for over two thousand years. But even before the egg was associated with this holiday, it was an honored part of spring festivals. Just as the egg holds life within its shell, ancient cultures used it as a representation of the earth’s rebirth after a long, cold winter. With the advent of Christianity, the egg’s symbolism changed to represent not nature’s birth but the rebirth of man, the essential belief of Easter. People have been dyeing and decorating eggs for centuries. But the most famous Easter eggs were those designed by goldsmith Peter Carl Fabrege, who was commissioned by nineteenthcentury Russian Czar Alexander to produce a richly ornamented jeweled egg as a gift for his wife Maria. Upon receiving the egg, Maria was so pleased she ordered eggs to be designed and delivered every Easter. Years later, Alexander’s son, Nicholas II, continued the tradition. 6 Great Reasons to Cook with Your Kids By Sarah Lyons
Cooking with kids takes a little extra time and patience, but has many benefits. As more families rely on fast food for mealtime and childhood obesity rises, parents can make a lasting difference in their children’s overall health by cooking meals at home and getting the kids involved. Here are some of the great reasons to bring your kids into the kitchen while preparing food for your family.
Math lessons Cooking is a practical math lesson for kids. For preschool age kids, they will practice counting as they add two eggs and three teaspoons of this or that. Elementary school kids learn about fractions in a real world setting. If the recipe needs to be doubled or halved, kids can use their multiplication and division skills to calculate the new amounts. Kids, of all ages, will learn to follow directions as they read the recipe carefully and help add ingredients.

Builds self esteem Kids build their self-confidence as they learn something new and see the end result of all of their hard work. They will also get immediate positive feedback from their family as they taste the food they have made. Kids will begin to understand the effort involved in cooking and appreciate it more when a parent works hard on a delicious meal. Cooking builds self-esteem and teaches good work ethic.
Life skills Home cooked meals are less common in our society as people rely more on fast food in our busy world. Children that learn to cook at a young age will be more likely to prepare meals at home when out on their own. Cooking is one of the most practical life skills you can teach your children. It provides them with health benefits and cost savings, as well.

Science lessons Cooking—and baking, in particular, doesn’t just teach math, but science as well. What happens if you add too much baking soda? Not enough flour? Kids will learn how things work and the importance of following directions and using the correct measurements. They will learn attention to detail and what happens if a mistake is made.
One-on-one time Kids crave one-on-one time with their parents and cooking provides a great opportunity for some together time. Kids who cook with their parents are more likely to open up and talk about their day and what is going on in their lives. Cooking doesn’t have to be a chore, make it fun and take advantage of the time to laugh and talk together as you work.
Health benefits There are many health benefits to cooking at home. Meals are more likely to be well balanced, have better portion control, contain less salt and trans fat, and just taste better. By cooking at home with your children you are providing them with these life-long habits that improve overall health by training their palate to enjoy healthy foods. Cooking meals at home with your kids shows them that you are making family time and healthy meals a priority. By teaching them this practical life skill, you are showing them you value their help and want to spend time together. Sarah Lyons is a mom of six children, including 2 year old triplets. She enjoys cooking with the kids, reading, and spending time outside as a family.
6 Great Reasons to Make Family Dinner a Priority ■■Kids are more open to trying new foods, even veggies ■■Portion control ■■Opens communication ■■Improves family dynamics ■■Saves money ■■Kids are more likely to have higher self-esteem, lower risk of depression, and less likely to develop eating disorders (www.thefamilydinnerproject.org)

CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Creative Play Let Them Build Forts By Jan Pierce
When I was eight years old I decided it would be fun to live in a travel trailer. Our family didn’t happen to have one, so I set about building one for myself. I dreamed about parking it on the back of our property and living there, wild and free. I was a logical child, so I started at the beginning. A trailer stood on wheels—I’d have to make those first. I found an old saw and some plywood and began trying to saw in a circle. It wasn’t easy, but I hacked out some circle-like things and moved on. Next I’d need the floor of the trailer. I found some two by fours, nails and a hammer and pounded them together in ninety degree angles. So far, so good. Then something unimaginable happened. My nasty older cousin came for a visit and found my project. He not only made fun of it, he tore it apart. I had already begun to have some self-doubts about my progress, but this loss sent me into wails of despair. And here’s the important part for parents: My mom hadn’t known about my project. All she saw was a little heap of wood. She didn’t realize my creative dreams had just gone up in smoke and she told me to stop making such a fuss. I was heartbroken. What’s the lesson here? Ellen Galinsky’s book, Mind in the Making, talks about encouraging children to take on challenges. It’s an essential life skill. She encourages 10
Our Kids Magazine | April 2017
parents to support their children when they want to build a lemonade stand, build a fort on the back forty, or run in a 5K race to raise money for a good cause. Why? Because whenever a child is willing to step out and try something, our role as parents is to cheer them on. Children don’t always have the words to express the reasons they want to try something big. They just know the dream is there and they want to give it a go. Another reason to encourage creative outdoor play is that the planning and the execution of any project is worthwhile in itself. Consider building a fort. The child has to first envision the completed project, gather materials, work and problem solve along the way, and finally either succeed, partially succeed or fail to complete the project. Sounds a lot like adult work, doesn’t it? In the famous children’s book The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner, the four siblings are always depicted as independent thinkers, able to take care of themselves. They work to earn money for food, they cooperate in all the tasks necessary to create a home away from home and they make important decisions based on sound reasoning. Kids love the prospect of that kind of freedom to succeed. So next time your kids want to “build a fort” or embark on any other creative project, here are some ways to support their efforts. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES Speak encouraging words
Whether the project seems doable or not, the effort will be worth your encouragement. Any positive, encouraging words you offer will make a huge difference to your child’s willingness to try.
Provide materials
Whether done indoors or out of doors, there are ways parents can encourage creative projects by merely allowing access to “stuff.” Are your children free to use art supplies, blankets, pillows, toys to build a structure? Are they released to use found objects, scrap wood, and simple tools to create their projects?
Allow time and space to do the work without over-managing
While kids sometimes respond well to suggestions from adults, these creative projects should usually be done on their own. They have a plan in mind. Children are often satisfied with a finished product that looks nothing like the house or barn or spacecraft we might envision. Remember the pretending is a big part of the fun.
Expect some messes
Yes, creative play can be messy. There may be rubble to clean up, household items to put away, spilled paints or marks on the floor. There may be a few scrapes and bruises in the midst of creative outdoor projects. As long as there are no major safety issues, the process is worth the cost.

Praise the finished project,or the lessons learned along the way
My four little wheel-like pieces and the two by fours nailed together as the beginning of my floor didn’t look like much of anything. But they meant the world to me. All my dreams and creative efforts had been invested in them. I would have been thrilled to hear, “Wow, you put a lot of work into that. Tell me about it.”
Failure is an option (and not the end of the creative process)
Yes, a failed project is a great learning opportunity. And kids need to learn the important lesson that nothing is gained without the willingness to make mistakes. This might be a great time to read a book about inventors or great thinkers and examine all the “failures” they had on the way to success. Hands-on creative play is worth its weight in gold. It is also hard to find in these days of computer games and screens. So keep your ears open for the creative ideas your children mention. And whatever you do, encourage their plans to take on a challenge.

CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Kids with Special Needs Need Camp Too! By Ashley Talmadge
Sending a child to summer camp for the first time can make any parent nervous. But worries are often magnified for parents of kids with special needs. Images of sunlit lakes and carefree campers are often trumped by concerns about behavior, communication, and physical safety. Stacy De La O, whose daughter has high functioning autism, remembers the weeks leading up to Fia’s first overnight camp experience as a 10-year-old. “I was a wreck!” she admits. “But we prepared well, and in the end I trusted the counselors at Blue Compass to take care of her.” Children with physical, cognitive, or medical challenges often have few opportunities to navigate the world without a parent close by. Kids with special needs benefit from summer camp in two major ways, according to seasoned camp director Kelly Kunsek of Camp Paivika, a program serving children with physical and developmental disabilities. “Time away from families increases their independence,” she says. “And as they meet other campers, their social connections expand.” Parents benefit too. After a positive camp experience, a parent is both more aware of what a child can do for himself, and more comfortable allowing others to assist when needed. Research indicates there are other benefits. Because many camps cater to specific needs, children can learn new social, physical, academic, or self-care skills. Interacting with others who share similar challenges—whether dietary, physical, or 12
Our Kids Magazine | April 2017
cognitive—lets a child’s self-esteem and confidence blossom. And for some kids, camp provides a welcome respite from routine-packed schedules and visits to therapists. De La O’s worries evaporated when she picked Fia up after the session. “I could just see in her face that she’d had a great time.” That was just the beginning, and Fia continues to have wonderful camp experiences each summer. Experts say that by planning well and following a few simple guidelines, you and your special needs child can reap the rewards of summer camp. Decide what you want. Camps come in all flavors. In fact, the American Camp Association (ACA) states that “47 percent of camps offer specialized programs for individuals with disabilities.” Is your child ready for overnight camp? Or would a day camp suit her needs? Inclusive camps allow special needs kids to participate in activities with typical peers by making accommodations. Disability-specific camps hire staff trained to meet unique needs—visual impairment, autism, diabetes, severe allergies. Traditional camps offer tried-and-true activities like swimming, boating, crafts, and campfires. Specialty camps may focus on technology, sports, or the arts. Therapeutic camps offer interventions targeting speech/ language, behavioral, and/or physical therapy goals. And combinations abound. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

CAMP & SUMMER ACTIVITIES Do your research.
De La O says the parents at her daughter’s school “exchange information to find the best camps and programs for our kids.” Recommendations from teachers and service providers who know your child are also valuable. Look at camp materials online, read brochures, and watch videos. Has the camp been accredited by the ACA, or received recognition from a reputable organization? Make sure the camp’s philosophy is a match for your family. Would your child do better in a competitive or cooperative atmosphere? Are you looking for a specific religious affiliation? Look at the physical layout of the camp and notice any potential problems.
Ask questions and get comfortable.
Speak with the director and counselors who will be working with your child. Questions include: What is the staff-to-camper ratio? What training do counselors receive? What is the turn-over rate for staff? (Camps where staff members return summer after summer tend to offer more stability and consistency.) Is there medical staff on site 24/7, and where is the nearest hospital? How are special diets handled? How will I communicate with my child during the session? How are behavioral issues addressed? Be forthright and honest in describing your child’s challenges. Does the staff seem willing and competent to handle these specific issues?
Prepare your child.
Talk about camp and the activities he’ll get to try. Ask what he’s looking forward to, as well as what makes him nervous. Role playing potential social situations helps some kids feel more confident. Before attending overnight camp, Kunsek suggests trying a sleepover with a friend or family member. In addition, she says, “Go to the open house event if possible. It’s a good way for a child to become familiar with the setting and the staff, and to meet other campers.” If a family can’t attend the open house, Kunsek encourages scheduling a tour.
Think about funding.
Camps can be expensive, but families of children with special needs have options if they plan ahead. Many camps offer full and partial scholarships. Some churches and fraternal organizations (e.g. Lions Club, Rotary Club) will sponsor a child at a specific camp. If there is a proven need for continued education services over the summer, some school districts will pay for a camp that targets your child’s IEP goals. And if your child is receiving therapeutic interventions at camp, your medical insurance may cover some of the cost.

ONGOING EXHIBITS
UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures hosts “The Upshaws of County Line” exhibit through April 30.
Institute of Texan Cultures
The Upshaws of County Line is a new exhibit following descendants of emancipated slaves through 25 years of life in County Line, an East Texas Freedom Colony. Following emancipation, communities of former slaves began to spring up across the South. Guss, Felix and Jim Upshaw founded the Freedom Colony known as County Line, where they and other newly freed peoples carved out new lives and raised families amidst an ever-evolving society. Photographer Richard Orton of Nacogdoches, Texas, documented descendants of County Line’s original pioneers, still living in the town these many generations later. The exhibit includes 30 images, conveying the contemporary experience of life in a freedom colony. The exhibit is made possible through a partnership with Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Art Galleries. Exhibit runs through April 30.
