10 Ways to Celebrate Spring Charitably By Pam Molnar

April is Community Service Month, which is the perfect time to get involved in your community and make a difference. Many organizations chose April to bring awareness to their cause by naming it their month of recognition. Children and adults can join them this month by sharing their time, talents and network of friends to celebrate spring in a charitable way

1. National Garden Month

You don’t need a green thumb to start seedlings for community garden at home or in the classroom. When the seedlings have grown and the ground is ready, gather a group to do the planting. Many communities offer a community garden plot for a nominal fee. Offer your harvest of fresh vegetables to a local food pantry throughout the growing season.

2. Women’s Health Care Month

Women’s shelters never seem to have enough supplies for all the people who need them. Check out the websites of local women’s shelters for their most needed list which often include toiletries, towels, cold medicines, hand sanitizers and batteries. Get the word out through word of mouth, fliers and social media. Set up collection boxes in schools, churches and your own front door.

3. Autism Awareness Month

For kids on the normal spectrum, it’s sometimes hard to understand the challenges of living with Autism. AMC 6

offers Sensory Friendly Films, which allows patrons to get up and walk around during the movie or talk freely without being shushed. They keep the lights up and the volume down. To support Autism and students in your community affected by it, purchase a 500+ piece puzzle and raffle off the pieces. The money collected will go to support Autism and the winners of the raffle can attend a movie screening with their classmates for a better understanding of a day in their lives.

4. Pets are Wonderful Month

Did you ever think about fostering kittens? With an estimated 20 million kittens born each spring, now is the best time to give it a try. As a former kitten foster myself, I can tell you that kittens are low maintenance, playful guests and easily adopted. The shelters need you to give them a temporary home, take them to vet appointments, socialize them with people and other pets and post their sweet faces on social media in the hopes of finding them a forever home.

5. National Older Americans Month

Assisted Living Facilities can be a lonely place if you are a resident. They long for the spark of the younger generation. Plan a visit with your your scout troop or youth group. They love the idea of kids who want to play games or perform for them. You can also make up a Senior Sunshine Gift – all yellow items – to leave with the residents. 6. Earth Day

Voltaire once said, “No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible.” That is a great analogy for the abuse of our environment. We are all responsible for the mess and therefore, all need to be responsible for cleaning it up. Look around your school, community or even in your own house. Consider creating a compost pile, unplug the unnecessary power vampires, choose walking over getting rides, be mindful of your water usage and practice the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

7. Keep America Beautiful Month

Check your local community for Adopt a Highway programs, where a group goes out to clean up trash in a designated area. You can also organize a Clean Your Block program through KAB.com. This program suggests several ways to help clean up your part of the world by removing litter and debris from the tops of storm drains, educating about local recycling options, removing graffiti and cleaning up local playgrounds.

8. National Month of Hope

An idea for this event is to lift the spirts of families with loved ones in the hospital. Why not make a meal at a local Ronald McDonald House? Try something beyond pasta like steak fajitas, BBQ pork or an ethic meal that would best serve that community. You can also gather items for the care givers like notebooks and pens, adult coloring books, mints or gift cards to the hospital cafeteria.

9. American Cancer Society Month

Cancer is an awful disease and the chemotherapy required to help combat it will make patients feel worse before they feel better. Gather your friends, classmates or scout troop and make something from the heart. Even those with minimal sewing skills can make tied fleece blankets, rice filled heating pads (that can be heated in microwave) and breast cancer pillows, designed to keep your arm off the tender tissue after mastectomies.

10. Stress Awareness Month

Unfortunately, stress is a part of our day to day lives. The best way to combat it is to take several breaks during the day. Help set up space in your classroom, home or workspace that is a place to recharge. A sunny window, fresh air and a comfy seat is a great place to start. Fill the space with coloring books, paints or musical instruments to take a creative break. Offer a yoga mat, a jump rope or the equipment to listen to a mediation podcast. Whether you’re looking for enrichment for your child, a way to keep your child occupied and supervised while you work, or a short reprieve from parenting, there’s a summer camp out there that’s just right for every family.

Summer camp offers plenty of benefits, and many kids thrill at the idea of going away to summer camp. But for some kids, particularly those who are shy, introverted, or homebodies, the thought of going away for a night, let alone a week or more, can be cause for considerable anxiety. For kids who are adamantly opposed, forcing summer camp on them may not be in their best interest. But for kids who are more than eager – or at the very least willing to give it a shot without too much fuss – summer camp offers lots of opportunities kids aren’t likely to experience at home or anywhere else. If you’re not familiar with the benefits, summer camp: ■■fosters independence

■■is a place to develop new and lasting friendships ■■helps kids develop new skills

■■leads kids to discover new interests and hobbies

■■provides the opportunity for creative expression

■■Are you looking for a short-term (week or two) or summer-

long program?

■■Do you want a camp that’s very structured or one that

You can also visit http:// www.summercamps.com/ where you can search by zip code or category. The American Camp Association (ACA) accredits summer camps. So this is another excellent place to look for a camp. The ACA educates camp owners and directors in health and safety for staff and campers as well as program quality. It then accredits camps that meet the organization’s standards.

Next steps to finding the perfect summer camp Once you’ve selected a few summer camps that meet your primary criteria and that fit your child’s interests, share the choices to see what excites your child. Let your child know up front that you still need to thoroughly investigate the camp(s) before making a final decision. But do keep your child’s choices in mind to ensure your child gets the most out of summer camp. Once you and your child have narrowed the list to a manageable selection, you’ll want to investigate the camps further. There are several things you’ll want to consider.

What are the staff’s qualifications? Many summer camps use teens to staff the camps. Teens

make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness to summer camp programs. However, the programs themselves should be developed by professionals and have professional oversight to ensure kids are getting the most from the camp programs.

How does the camp ensure your child’s safety? Find out what kind of safety training the camp provides its staffers. Also, is there staff on hand at all times that knows CPR? What are the camp’s procedures in the event your child becomes ill, has an accident, or there’s an emergency?

What is the daily schedule for campers? Ask for a daily itinerary, so you know your child will be getting everything you and your child anticipate from the program.

What are the rules? Each camp has its own set of rules. So, find out whether your child is allowed to call you. If it’s a summer-long residential camp, can parents come and visit? Can your child bring along a cell phone or electronics? Also, how much money should your child bring, and how is your child’s money managed? Solo Sports for Introverted & Shy Kids

There’s no doubt, team sports offer an array of benefits to kids. Team sports provide opportunities for kids to develop friendships, work as a team, problem solve, learn good sportsmanship, and much more. But team sports aren’t for everyone. Many kids, particularly those who are introverted or shy, lack interest in or struggle with team sports. When kids aren’t into team sports, parents often get caught up in an endless battle – with their kids kicking and screaming all the way to every practice and game. So the question is, should parents push their unenthused kids into team sports if their kids are adamant they want no part of it? Encouraging kids to participate in some form of extracurricular activity is undoubtedly a good idea. Such activities can provide kids valuable learning opportunities while also keeping them fit. But if your child is introverted, social or group experiences can be particularly stressful and mentally exhausting. So what can you do to help your child get in some fitness and develop motor skills while still allowing your child to be true to himself or herself? There are plenty of sports and

physical activities to choose from that aren’t as mentally taxing yet they provide kids plenty of benefits.

SOLO SPORTS Martial arts. This sport is divided into the categories of wrestling, striking, grappling, and weaponry. Many disciplines use a combination of these categories, so it’s a good idea to look into several disciplines. Then let your child help decide which style to try. Some of the most popular forms include judo, Tai-Chi, karate, kickboxing, wrestling, Taekwondo, Aikido, and Jiu-Jitsu. Through martial arts, in addition to learning self-defense, kids learn self-discipline and fine-tune their motor skills. Gymnastics. The most popular form of gymnastics is artistic, which includes floor exercise, balance beam, vault, uneven bars, still rings, and parallel bars. There’s also rhythmic, which combines dance and gymnastics moves to music. Aerobic gymnastics is yet another form. Gymnastics improves strength, flexibility, balance, and cognitive functioning, among other benefits. Ice Skating. Speed skating is one form of ice skating your child can learn. But there’s also figure skating, which includes single skating, pair skating, ice dancing, and synchronized skating. This sport provides a cardiovascular workout

This solo sport has numerous forms including, but not limited to slalom, freestyle, street, off-road, vert, and park. This is an excellent form of exercise that improves strength, coordination, and flexibility. There are several forms of bicycling that might appeal to your child such as distance endurance cycling, mountain biking, and stunt riding. Archery. Although archery might appear to be a passive sport, it offers several benefits including improving balance, coordination, upper body strength, and mental focus. Also, during competitions, archers get plenty of exercise as they often walk up to five miles. Dance. Many people argue dance isn’t a sport. Nonetheless, it offers many of the same benefits as sports. Dancing builds self-confidence, provides exercise, and develops balance, stamina, and strength. Forms of dance include tap, ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, swing, Latin, contra, Irish step dance, and more. Swimming and diving. Either of these might appeal to your introverted child. Swimming builds strength and endurance

while improving cardiovascular fitness. Diving improves agility, strengthens the upper body, particularly the arms, and improves mental focus. Running. As straightforward as running may sound, there are several forms from which your child can choose. There’s adventure running, cross country, road, mountain, track and field, races, and marathon. Whatever the form, it’s an excellent cardiovascular workout. It also builds endurance, releases stress, and is a powerful antidepressant. Climbing. If you have a tree climber on your hands, rock climbing might be the perfect sport. As dangerous as it may sound, according to a study that appeared in the Journal of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine, volume 19, #2, 2008, specific forms of climbing are less risky then several other sports such as hiking, sledding, and snowboarding. Climbing is an excellent cardiovascular workout, tones and strengthens muscles, and improves mental focus. Inline skating. Although rollerblading first gained popularity with hockey, it’s been enjoyed equally as a leisure or solo sport. Inline skating offers nearly as much cardio and muscle building benefits as running but without so much impact on the joints. Plastic Easter Eggs Activities By Meagan Ruffing

April showers bring May flowers, right? Well, yes, but the month of April also brings a ton of plastic Easter eggs that somehow make their way from our kids’ Easter baskets to every crevice of our homes. We love them when they’re all wrapped up in pretty cellophane and in one place (on the store shelves) but after they’ve been filled with candy, hidden, hunted and played with, what’s next for these kid-loving plastic eggs? Use empty eggs as counters. Grab 10 eggs (or more) and write the number one on the bottom part of the egg and the number one on the top part of the egg. Follow this pattern all the way up to number 10 (or higher if you use more eggs). Separate the eggs and mix them up. Have your child match the tops and bottoms together by numbers. (One goes with one, two goes with two, etc.) This fun game helps with number recognition and fine motor skills. The snapping together of the two shells allows your child to use their hands to ensure the egg snaps together. You could also try this with the alphabet for letter recognition. Make your own maracas! Grab a bunch of eggs and fill each one with something different. For maracas, think of filling two eggs with dried beans. Be sure to run a piece of tape around the egg to stop beans from flying out when your little one starts shaking them. For a longer lasting set of maracas, use a hot glue gun to seal the top and bottom of the egg together. For a fun guessing game, put rice in one egg, peanuts in another egg, skittles in another, cotton, and basically anything small that can fit inside. Shh! Don’t let your child see what you’re hiding in the eggs. Have them shake them to try and guess what’s on the inside. Who says egg hunts have to be about Easter? Gather up those eggs and fill them with clues! Each egg will hold a piece of paper inside with a note to find the next egg. For example, “Go to the place where you hang your backpacks up.” Fill and hide as many eggs as you’d like and fill the last egg with something special like a quarter or a handmade ‘IOU’ for a Happy Meal. Your kids will get a kick out of running around 20

the house like investigators and you’ll enjoy watching them work as a team to solve the next clue. You could do this in the house on a cold and rainy day or outside in your yard on a beautiful summer day. Empty plastic eggs make the best bath toys. Think about it. They’re cheap, easy to clean, and what kid doesn’t like filling things up with water while taking a bath? Throw a couple of eggs in the tub at the next bath time and watch your child’s eyes light up. Their imagination will go wild with turning their eggs into submarines, tiny beds, or even rocket ships. They can pour water from one half of the shell into the other and for younger kids you can reiterate the words, “empty” and “full” depending on whether or not there is water in that half of the egg. These eggs will also float so the next time Barbie decides to take a dip during your daughter’s bath, tell her that Barbie needs to hang onto the ‘life raft,’ aka ‘egg’ to stay afloat! To clean the eggs after a couple of bath time adventures, spray them with a little bleach water and let dry. Instead of dreading the amount of eggs your kids will inevitably collect over Easter, use these ideas to make fun memories with your children. What a Mess! You know it. The never-ending battle of your son’s messy room. His room isn’t like other children’s, though. Your son’s room is an all-out black hole where things disappear…never to be seen again. You feel the anger starting to boil up inside of yourself and before you can collect your thoughts, words are spewing out of your mouth yelling, “Pick that up! How did your room get this messy? Why are your comic books torn up? Are these wrappers under you bed?” The truth is, kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) have a hard time getting organized and staying organized. There are few things short of threatening your child with taking away his electronics for the rest of his life that will let him know how serious you are about picking up after himself. Try these 5 tips the next time you walk into your child’s crumb-infested bedroom. 1. Tell him one thing at a time. Kids with ADHD have a hard time following multiple directions. Give them one command at a time. For example, you might say to your daughter, “Please put all of the Legos in the red bin. When you are done with that, come back and see me.” Notice the command was not vague. It was very specific. This tip is imperative for children who process commands differently than other children. It can be overwhelming and frustrating for kids when they can’t remember which order to do things in which almost always ends up in a meltdown. 22

5 Tips to Help Your ADHD Child Get Organized By Meagan Ruffing As the parent, this extra and sometimes timely step can feel like just one more thing in the laundry list of tips to remember with our children but in the end, it really does benefit everyone involved. Once your child has put all of the Legos in the red bin and is now standing in front of you, go ahead and give her another task. “Please make your bed and then come back and see me.” Even after specific commands like these your daughter might still feel overwhelmed with the constant picking up. For these types of children, it is important to give a timeline or a plan. For example, “After you put the Legos in the red bin and make your bed, you can take a break and swing outside but after your 10 minute break, you will need to go back to your room and hang your clothes up.” This storytelling to your child serves more than one purpose; it lets your daughter know what’s expected of her and it tells her the plan in a very clear way. 2. Don’t be afraid to give rewards. Some kids do better with tangible rewards. Forget the guilt of thinking you’re bribing your kids. Do what works for you and your child and get on with your day. Too often, guilt plays a role in parenting children with ADHD. Let it go and remind yourself that you know your child best and what works for other children does not always work for yours. If you see that your child is getting frustrated because he flat out does not want to pick up his room, tell him he can have five minutes of Minecraft for every command he does without whining. Be sure to remind him of this after he successfully does what you have asked him to do. Kids with ADHD crave structure and routine. It may not always seem like it especially when they’re yelling back at you or being defiant but these children need boundaries. Even though they like control and they like to test you, they ultimately do better when they know what is expected of them. 3. Make a story-telling board and go over it with your child. A story-telling board is exactly what it sounds like. This is ADHD advice 101. Get a piece of poster board, markers and maybe even some stickers. You will write out and draw what you want your child to do each day. Keep the commands short and to the point. Below is a very simple example of a story-telling board. 4. Take a picture of each area cleaned up the way you want it. This is a really simple way to have a visual example for kids about what you expect their space to look like. Remember the Legos mentioned earlier in this article? Take a picture of them in the red bin. When it comes time for your daughter to pick her room up, pull out that picture and show it to her. Kids need visual reminders of what needs to be done. This will take the guess work out of what she thinks you expect and instead, it will be an exact example of what you want her to do.

5. Praise. It’s a toss-up for kids with ADHD on whether or not they like praise. Some do and some don’t. If your child does, than by all means, praise him as he picks things up. If you have a child who actually reacts negatively when you offer positive reinforcement, just wait until he is done with everything you have asked him to do and simply say, “Good job.” You may want to say more because you are used to doing that with your other children who love it when you tell them how proud or happy you are but some kids can’t stand this. If this sounds like your child, simply acknowledging the hard work he has done is enough. It may not seem like it now but kids really do want to be good; especially those with ADHD. Depending on how old your child is, she may not understand why she acts the way she does sometimes. This is all part of navigating the tricky world of having a child with a behavioral disorder. Paint to Music: The San Antonio Symphony League will exhibit a selection of the 2018 Paint to Music contest entries at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures this spring, as a student-created exhibit. The Paint to Music Contest encourages children to explore the language of music and the role that classical music can play in enhancing creative expression through art. For the 2018 edition of the Paint to Music Contest, the Symphony chose three works to inspire the students’ artistry: an excerpt from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” “Davy Crockett” of The Alamo Suite from the 1960 film score by Dimitri Tiomkin, and Carl Ruggles’ “Marching Mountains.” The exhibit includes 40 images, displayed in the institute’s student exhibits gallery. San Antonio Museum of Art Egyptian Animal Mummies: Science Explores an Ancient Religion in this upcoming exhibition. These reliquaries will be presented for the first time alongside the Museum’s collection of animal mummies. Recently conserved for this exhibition, the mummies include a cat, three crocodiles, two ibises, and three falcons. The exhibition focuses on the creation of the mummies, their role in ancient Egyptian religion, and their burial. In collaboration with the San Antonio Zoo and the Radiology Department at University of Texas Health San Antonio, the mummies underwent modern scientific methods of examination including X-ray imaging and CT scanning, which made it possible to understand and analyze the contents of the mummies without unwrapping them. A Night in Old San Antonio: Each year the historic downtown village of La Villita takes center stage as 85,000 visitors gather for four nights to celebrate the city’s unique heritage at “A Night in Old San Antonio.” More than 250 elaborately decorated food and drink booths and more than a dozen nonstop entertainment stages represent the diverse cultures and customs of our city in 15 heritage-themed areas. Students will be able to tour his home and step back in time to see not only where, but how he lived. He noted in his writings that as he rode by the Alamo on his way out of town in February 1836 to sign the Texas Declaration of independence in Washington on the Brazos that a Mexican Flag with the number 1824 was flying over the Alamo. A replica of the 1824 flag and other select flags will be part of the Children’s Forum. Reenactors and hostesses dressed in period clothing will present these flags in an interactive approach with the children. Many of these presenters are direct descendants of those who once hoisted these historic flags and will include Navarro, Canary Islander (Travieso), Seguin, George, Hamm, Walker and Lancaster descendants.
