Take flight!

Ready for School, Kids! From immunization shots to schools supplies, there is much to do this month as parents get ready to send their kids off to school. Getting back into the school swing of things can be difficult; but what can be even more challenging is finding after-school options for children during the hours of 3 to 6 p.m. as parents finish their work day. Check out our after-school directory for a list of local programs available that best fits your families’ needs. While our kids adjust to a new school year, parents also need to adjust and keep their work habits in check. Working parents should look out for the indicators when they are not putting family first. Freelance writer, Colyn Sanchez, has written an article on such signs to let parents know when “Work is Dictating Life.” Every summer, families plan on a new place to go on vacation, but for our babies, it’s all the same. The world is still new to them and they are content with the simplest things. This month in our baby section, freelance writer Karyn Robinson has complied a list of games and activities in an article called “10 Ways Babies Learn & Play.” Soon enough our little ones grow up and join the modern world of computer screens and tablets. The constant use of screens is a new addiction that is affecting our children --- and parents are guilty of this too. They are everywhere-from computers at work, our tv’s at home and phones in our pockets—but, should technology be used as a tool or a toy? How many hours should our kids use them? For the answer to these questions and more, read “Better Balance Screen Time” by freelance writer Christa Melnyk Hines. With all this talk about work and getting ready for school, I need to take a step back and say: “Summer is not over yet!” Just take a look at our calendar section to see all the things going on this month including the muchawaited Kidcation Week!

When Work Dictates Your Life By Margaret Colyn Sanchez

For many working parents, family life can often feel pushed aside to accommodate work obligations. While all working individuals understand the constant demands that work can have on a person, it can be very straining and stressful on a family when one or both parents are taking on a heavy workload. It can also be hard sometimes to recognize as a parent if you are too invested in your work rather than your family. There are ways to help parents focus on family when with family, rather than having work constantly being in the forefront of their minds.

Indicators of Work Dictating your Life There are several ways to determine if your work is running your life. Counselor Jill A. Lee MA, NCC, LPC-Intern of New Braunfels, Texas says that usually the indication comes in “the form of 8

Our Kids Magazine | August 2015

complaints or resentment from the people closest to you.” Hearing the people you care about most talk about your work interfering with your relationships can hurt, and sometimes make you stress even more. But Lee suggests, “trust those closest to youtheir perspective is usually clearer than yours when it comes to this. Especially when it’s hard to hear.” Another indicator of work running your life is when your job’s demands are constantly and consistently on your mind. Counselor Cheryl Duke MA, NCC, LPC-S notes that when “work is the last thing you think about at the end of the day and the first thing you think about when you wake up, it is most likely overwhelming you.” There are ways to try and avoid the issue of work leading your life and thoughts. Although work is important and necessary, at the end of the day we need our loved ones to know that they matter most.

FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

Personal Relationships Think of the people that matter most to you in your life. Schedule them into your calendar just like you would a meeting or deadline for work, or a doctor’s appointment. Duke recommends that “whether it be a date night with your spouse, a one-on-one outing with your children individually, or an evening with a friend, dates can be a wonderful way to reconnect with individuals.” It is a great way to get away from work and to focus on other people and activities. This can be very healthy for everyone involved. The key to making these dates happen without feeling stressed or guilty about putting aside work is to have a balanced life. “We all need work, rest, and play,” Lee says “to maintain optimal health.” It is important for adults to play and do things for fun just as it is for children. Reward yourself after a day of work or after completing a big assignment by going out with family or catching a movie. Role Model A parent’s first priority is always their child, and because of that a parent does what he or she can to provide for their family. In order to provide for your child, work can sometimes be placed at the top of your agenda. It is common for one or both parents to miss their child’s baseball games, dance recitals or awards ceremonies because of work conflicts. Duke states that it is important for children to “learn the value of hard work and taking responsibility, as well as having a model of strong work ethic.” While it might not seem to make a huge impact at the time, sitting down and explaining to your child that your job sometimes requires you to work hard even if you don’t want to and that we have to follow through with our commitments teaches the child what it means to be devoted and dedicated to our responsibilities. Children learn many of their values in life from how their parents treat their responsibilities and obligations. By exhibiting a pleasant and solid view of your work ethic, you are passing that on to your child in their attitude about current and future responsibilities.

When Work Affects Your Mood If your job is affecting your mood outside of work, it is crucial to pinpoint what the issue is and prevent it from affecting your personal and family life. Lee suggests that if your “identity is closely tied to your job performance, you need to begin to base who you are on other things in life too, especially if your job performance is suffering.” Taking the time to focus on yourself can help with readjusting your attitude outside of work. Finding ways to decompress after work can help you to focus on the present and be less stressed when you are spending time with friends and loved ones. Better Balance Screen Time Simple Tips for a Happier Family

With mobile devices readily available anywhere and everywhere, striking a healthy balance between online and in-person interaction is difficult for today’s families. How do we find a happy medium between quality family time and the siren song generated from the pixelated forest of apps, games and social media? According to Common Sense Media, mobile media use among children, ages zero to eight years old, has doubled from 38 percent to 72 percent since 2011. On average, kids

Interesting Study The amount of screen among children has tripled in the past three years. A 2011 study conducted by the Kaiser Foundation found that kids spend an astonishing average of seven hours a day in front of screens.

spend a little over an hour a day on the devices, downloading apps, playing games and watching videos. “Perhaps my biggest concern about the overuse of technology in families is ‘opportunity costs,’ which is an economic term that means that time spent in front of a screen is time not spent engaging in healthier and more meaningful activities such as family time, exercise, faith, cultural, education, etcetera,” says Dr. Jim Taylor, psychologist and author of Raising Generation Tech. Find your middle ground. Overexposure to media can lead to obesity, poor school performance, sleep deprivation and invasions of privacy. But, banning kids from technology can effectively shut down conversations about appropriate media use, spurring kids to sneak around, creating accounts and playing games on friends’ devices where you have no oversight. “Technology use becomes unhealthy when it hurts physical or mental health, relationships, school work or FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

healthy avocations like sports, music and charity,” Taylor says. “The bottom line is that technology should be the exception and not the rule: a tool, not a toy.” Use time wisely. Make the most out of the time your child interacts with technology by choosing educational apps and games. Although kids may be attracted to games featuring casino-like sounds and colors, these weren’t designed for children and they can be addictive. “It’s important that you dictate the way your child goes down the path of gaming. I’m not a big fan of allowing kids free rein of time wasters because that’s just sunken time,” says David Lord, CEO of JumpStart, a gaming company that produces learning games for kids like the popular MathBlaster app and DreamWorks “School of Dragons,” a science game based on the movie “How to Train Your Dragon.” Be a healthy role model. A 2012 Google study found that 90 percent of us engage in multiple screens at once like watching television while also scrolling through a smartphone. Kids will follow your lead when it comes to how you interact with electronics. Become conscious of how much you use technology and if you engage with technology in a healthy way. Designate tech-free spaces. Silence or put away electronics during homework and chore time and during family-oriented activities. Meals in particular present a rich opportunity to connect with your kids without electronic distractions. “We no longer plant vegetables or quilt on the front porch together so meal time is one of the few times of the day when a family connects with one another,” says Dr. Anne Fishel, author of Home for Dinner: Mixing Food, Fun and Conversation for a Happier Family and Healthier Kids. “If family members are distracted by checking their phones and other screens, they miss out on the chance to really focus on each other, and convey that essential message--’you come first.’” Studies find that families who eat dinner together experience lower rates of substance abuse, depression and teen pregnancy. Kids who regularly eat dinner with their families are also more likely to have higher self-esteem, better grades and even stronger vocabularies. Set limits. “Cell phones, computers, the Internet and tablets are not rights--they are privileges. And like any privileges they need parameters and rules for their use,” says Dr. Michael Osit, a child psychologist and author of Generation Text: Raising Well-Adjusted Kids in the Age of Instant Everything. “Be firm with time limits and content limits.” If you have trouble keeping track of how much time your kids spend playing video or computer games, set a timer. “Only one hour a day or only after other important priorities have been fulfilled like homework and household chores,” Taylor advises. The lights and sounds electronic devices make can interfere with quality sleep. Collect your kids’ phones and electronic devices at bedtime and plug them into a main charging station in your home. Plan ahead. Decide when, where and for how long you will allow computer time--mobile or otherwise--during the week. Also consider the amount of television your family watches. Plan ahead which TV shows your children can watch during the week to avoid mindlessly turning to television whenever boredom sets in. Viewing family-oriented shows together can invite conversation opportunities like “What would you do if something like that happened to you or one of your friends?” To prepare for unplugged times, meet as a family to come up with alternate activities that you and your kids can enjoy that aren’t screen-related. For example, go on a family walk, play board games, toss the football, ride bikes, build, read, cook, draw or explore your community. Play with technology together. According to researchers at Arizona State University, gaming together offers teachable moments to share values and explore creative problem solving. “Parents miss a huge opportunity when they walk away from playing video games with their kids. Many video games are meant to be shared and can teach young people about science, literacy and problem solving,” says researcher Elisabeth Hayes, Delbert & Jewell Lewis Chair in Reading & Literacy and professor in ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. Use technology together in other ways to strengthen communication skills and creativity. Invite your child to Facetime or Skype with grandparents. Show her how to start a private blog about one of her favorite subjects. Take digital photos together and collaborate on a photo book or a calendar. By taking a proactive, balanced approach to technology with boundaries firmly in place, you can focus on using technology to complement rather than control your life. In the process, you’ll grow closer and happier as a family. Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines and her husband are the parents of two boys who are charmed by all things digital. AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY

After-School Options Finding the right program for your kids By Renee Haines

Many parents already grappling with which backpack is best and back-to-school supply aisles at neighborhood stores have another biggie on their list for the upcoming start of another new school year: finding the right afterschool program. Will it be traditional after-school programs that focus on homework help, arts-minded programs like the acting classes offered by Performing Arts San Antonio or athletics-minded fare like “i play!” classes from San Antonio Sports? For San Antonio parent Carol Covert, the answer was all of the above. Her twin sons, now 15, participated in academic, art and athletic programs during their elementary and middle school years at San Antonio Academy of Texas. The private school for boys offers programs in all three arenas, she says. Her advice for other parents? “There are plenty of choices, but if you push them, if you make them do something, they’re going to hate it,” Covert says. Her sons participated in the school’s arts programs and an after-school chess club. “One of them dropped piano and picked up guitar,” she says. They have 14

Our Kids Magazine | August 2015

attended scouting programs and a young astronaut’s club. Team sports also have been on her kids’ afterschool roster in past years. While academics and the arts have been important, so have programs that involve physical exercise. “It’s not just about the brain; the body needs exercise,” she says.

Brainpower, body power Manners count, too, says Dan Gonzalez, owner and chief instructor at S.A. Kid’s Karate. “Karate begins with courtesy and respect. For a kid, that translates to be good, be nice, behave.” Gonzalez, a 40-year veteran of the Asia-born practice of self-defense, says parental and participant expectations “have changed tremendously” over the past two decades. “Forty years ago, you didn’t have kids under the age of 10 doing it. These days, kids as young as 4 and 5 take karate. More girls are involved,” he says. “Even though self-defense and anti-bullying are a big part of it, parents wants their kids to learn discipline, to increase their activities,” says Gonzalez, whose children are 10 and 13. ‘The whole ranking system – white belt, FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY yellow belt, black belt – is teaching them to listen, to set goals. When you listen, you understand the task and you can complete it.” Gonzalez says S.A. Kid’s Karate was the first nonschool-based after-school program in San Antonio to offer transportation from public schools to the karate school’s two San Antonio locations. “We helped write the legislation that allowed all the after-school programs to do this,” Gonzalez says. His program offers transportation from 25 Northside Independent School District schools. Forty years of studies have demonstrated positive physical and intellectual benefits from exercise for children. As more schools reduce or eliminate traditional physical education programs, more after-school programs are focusing on or adding physical activity to the schedule. “I’ve had parents says all their kids want to do is play video games,” Gonzalez says. “Parents tell us they want their kids to be more active.” San Antonio Sports, which successfully lobbied to bring the NCAA Final Four to San Antonio in 2018, offers after-school sessions on competitive soccer, track, volleyball, tennis and golf to kids at 45 San Antonio area elementary schools. The After School Challenge program of the City of San Antonio Department of Human Services offers a

combined focus on academics and physical activity at its after-school initiative in place at more than 130 elementary and middle schools. Recreational activities share the schedule with tutoring and homework help. This program’s sliding fee structure is based in part on family income. Say Si (San Antonio Youth Yes) is a tuition-free after-school arts program that offers visual arts, theater and multimedia arts classes to qualifying middle and high school students at the organization’s facility in downtown’s Blue Star Arts Complex neighborhood. This program also focuses on building social and academic skills. Other after-school programs are offered by community-based organizations, individual schools, public libraries, faith-based institutions and local childcare facilities.

An after-school report card When the National Association of Independent Schools studied what factors in elementary, middle and high schools led to successful college completion rates, the organization looked at class size, teaching quality, standards and other variables. “Surprisingly, by far, the most significant variable that impacted success in college was student involvement in after-school activities,” says John Webster, head of

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY school at San Antonio Academy of Texas. At his private boys’ school, participation in after-school activities was 100 percent last year. “Studies show that when students participate in afterschool activities, their relationship with the school becomes stronger, and they develop a greater sense of ownership in their school experience,” Webster said in a letter posted on his school’s website. “That stronger ownership evolves into responsibility and accountability at school.” While quality and costs can vary, the U.S. Department of Education reports that high-quality after-school programs lead to measurably better grades and conduct in school, better attendance and improved social skills measured by emotional adjustment and peer relationships. The federal agency’s studies also cite fewer incidents of drug use, violence and pregnancy.

A check-off list From the national nonprofit Child Care Aware, a list of potential questions for after-school directors to determine which program is best for your child includes queries about instructor training, financial assistance options, licensing, safety training and references. The ERIC Clearinghouse on Urban Education at New York’s Columbia University also suggests finding out about any additional fees charged for extras such as tutoring, field

trips or late pickups if you’re detained at work. For example, some programs charge a dollars-per-minute fee to parents for picking up their kids after formal operating hours.

Other nonprofits and government agencies recommend asking: ■■Is the program age-appropriate for your child? ■■Are drop-in visits by parents welcome? ■■Will your child learn something new? ■■Is the facility safe and welcoming for kids? Renee Haines is a San Antonio freelance writer.

Baby

10 Ways Babies Learn & Play by Karyn Robinson-Renaud MSW, RSW

The first twelve months with your baby are action packed. They are a time of rapid growth and learning. During this first year is the perfect time to use simple play activities to lay a great foundation for your baby’s future. Below are some fun ideas to get you started on that path.

Simply You.

“You are your baby’s favorite toy...” says Sheila Bourgeois. Bourgeois is a program coordinator at a family resource center. She says that you don’t need a lot of toys to support your child’s development. Whether you are singing, reading or making funny faces, your baby will be delighted. Occupational Therapist, Wanh Porter says that the key is to do all of these simple activities face-to-face. She also recommends copying what your baby does. Developmental Targets: Social/Language and Cognitive. One month and up.

Singing Time.

Babies love hearing the same songs sung to them many times says public health nurse, Shelley Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy recommends doing simple

22

Our Kids Magazine | August 2015

action songs with your baby. Pat- a- cake is a fun favorite. Be sure to bring your child’s hands in front of his face so that he can try out the actions too, reminds Shaugnessy. Developmental Targets: Social/Language and Cognitive. One month and up.

Bubble Play.

Did you know that bubbles are great for body awareness? Bourgeois explains that when bubbles pop on your baby’s body, it brings her attention to that area. Regardless of your baby’s age, she will enjoy watching you blow and pop bubbles says Bourgeois. You can also introduce simple words like “up” and “pop”. Developmental Targets: Cognitive, Gross Motor, Fine Motor and Social/Language. One month and up.

Reading Time.

You can bring books to life for your baby with your animated voice. With older babies, get books that they can hold and turn the pages of suggests Shaughnessy. She also recommends choosing books with simple words and pictures that you point to as you read. Developmental Targets: Social/Language, Cognitive and Fine Motor. One month and up. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

Kitchen Band.

Allow your little ones to explore their musical side with your pots or a plastic container recommends Porter. They can use their hands or a spoon to create their own rhythms. Your baby will start to learn basic math skills by playing around with simple rhythm activities, explains Bourgeois. Developmental Targets: Cognitive, Social/ Language and Gross Motor. Eight months and up.

Hiding Fun.

Initiate simple hide-and-seek games with your baby by going under blankets or behind furniture says Porter. Encourage your little one to try hiding from you as well. Developmental Targets: Gross Motor, Cognitive, and Social. Six months and up.

Ball Play.

Porter suggests using different sized balls with different textures to teach the game of catch. Your baby will develop hand-eye coordination as she gets the hang of the game, explains Porter. Developmental Targets: Fine and Gross Motor, Cognitive and Social. Eight months and up.

Discovery Box.

Turn an empty tissue box into a sensory game suggests Bourgeois. Decorate the outside of the box and then fill it with clean fabrics that have different textures and

prints explains Bourgeois. She recommends that parents encourage their baby to pull some fabric out of the box and then help baby explore it with his hands and mouth. Developmental Targets: Fine Motor, Cognitive and Social/Language. Six months and up.

Movement Fun.

Put favorite toys around the room for your little ones to get to any way that they like, says Shaughnessy. Feel free to get on the floor with your baby to model fun ways of moving. Developmental Targets: Gross Motor, Cognitive and Social. Nine months and up.

Mini Monet.

Make your own paint with cornstarch, water and food coloring, suggests Bourgeois (see recipe in side bar.) Encourage your little Monet to paint with her fingers or a brush. Consider also offering different textured things to paint with like sponge shaped animals. Developmental Targets: Cognitive, Gross and Fine Motor and Social. Six months and up. Most importantly, focus on having fun with your baby. The bond you create through engaging your baby in playful ways will create a great foundation for his development.

McNay Art Museum

Merida’s Mexico features three complete print portfolios by Carlos Mérida (18911984) from the McNay’s collection. Though born in Guatemala, Carlos Mérida would live most of his life and career in Mexico where he, like so many other modernists working there, would celebrate and document indigenous cultures and traditions through his art. Particularly close to his heart was the preColumbian Mayan text called the Popol Vuh. Variously translated as “Book of the People” or “Book of the Community,” the document is a rare survivor of the Spanish conquest that puts forth a creation story for the K’iche or Quiché people of western Guatemala who were Merida’s ancestors. Exhibit runs through September 6.

Our Kids Magazine | August 2015

Recycled, Repurposed, Reborn - is organized as a collaboration between the McNay’s four curators and focuses on collages on paper, panel, and canvas, as well as wall-hung and free-standing assemblage sculptures and hybrids of the collage and assemblage aesthetic. The twoand three-dimensional works draw from all parts of the museum’s extensive collection. Exhibit runs through August 17.

Model of a Spy Pigeon outfitted with a special cameras that were used during World War I is on display at “SPY the Exhibit” located in the Rivercenter Mall.

Viva Zapata! Zapata has been a favorite subject of Mexican artists since the days of the Mexican Revolution. Every artist has a different take on just who this controversial person was, from Diego Rivera’s heroic depiction of the revolutionary standing next to his white steed, to Siqueiros’s nearly comic portrait, and to Orozco’s damnation of the mindlessness of the whole Zapata movement. Drawn entirely from the McNay’s highly important collection of Mexican modernist prints, this exhibition is part history lesson and part survey of this aspect of the McNay collection. Exhibit runs through August 16. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $5 for seniors (65+), students with I.D. (13+), and active duty military; and free for children ages 12 and younger and to all museum members.
