Beyond the Handwritten Thank You Note 10 Ways to Express Gift Appreciation By Pam Molnar
According to the Emily Post Institute, “It’s never wrong to send a written thank you, and people always appreciate getting “thanks” in writing.” However, when we sit down in front of a blank thank you card, we are often stumped for words. If we can’t come up with the words ourselves, imagine what it must be like as a child A handwritten thank you is special because it shows you took the time to express your gratitude in a personal way. If writing is not your strong suit, there are several other ways to show your appreciation in a more casual, but just as sincere way.
1
Draw a picture. This is great for the preschool crowd. After a family birthday party have the kids make a pile of pictures. The pictures could be of the people who sent the gift, the gift itself and just a nice scenery picture. Mom or Dad can write a little note on the back (either in the kids’ words or their own) and put it in the mail. 6

Pre-printed, fill in the blank thank you notes. When the kids have friend parties, there often isn’t time to sit down and watch the birthday child open each gift. Create a fill in the blank thank you card where your child can fill in with small words. For example: “Dear________. Thank you for ______________. I really enjoyed having you at my party and hope you had fun, too. Love, ____________.” Spell out the words they don’t know or delegate that part to their older siblings.

Printed photo picture with quick note on back. This was something I did up for my then high school senior. I ordered picture cards of her in her cap and gown and added a pre-printed thank you on the front. She then handwrote a two sentence note on the back of each card thanking them with a personal touch. Express yourself – If you have a creative kid, let them share that as a way to say thanks. Do they play an instrument or sing? Let them send a recording of their music along with a quick verbal thank you message at the end. Do they write poetry, make jewelry or crafts? Encourage them use their talents to express their gratitude in a unique way.

Re-gift the generosity to someone else. If they get a new bike from Uncle Dan, you can donate your old bike in his name. Suggest they use some of their birthday money from Aunt Jen to support a local food shelter and send her a picture of your child volunteering. This unique pay-it-forward thank you will definitely bring a smile to the gift giver’s face.

Phone call. Why not call someone up to say thanks? Like a handwritten note in the mailbox, a thank you call is more personal. Kids can work on their conversation skills after the initial thank you part of the conversation is over by inquiring about what the gift giver is doing today or who they think will win the game tonight.

Skype/Facetime while unwrapping. My niece called me from California when she opened her birthday gifts and I got to see the joy on her face when she ripped off the paper. We spoke for a few minutes, she thanked me
for the gift and then got back to her party. No follow up thank you needed.

Email – Email thank yous don’t seem very personal, but they still work. You can make it more special by including a picture of you and your gift or the two of you together. You can also find a musical thank you ecard or video card to send along from a website like AmericanGreetings.com.

Text – Oh boy! This seems like a lame thank you. However, for a generation that has grown up expressing themselves with emojis, this isn’t all bad. You might want to accompany the text with a picture of your child holding the gift. This simple interchange might be the building blocks of a stronger relationship down the road.

Say thank you in person. Imagine how nice it would be to open the door to someone who just stopped by to say thank you. If you are not that spontaneous, reach out to the gift giver and schedule a visit for a time that works you both. More Meaning, Less Stress 8 Memory Making Holiday Traditions That Discourage Materialism By Shannon Dean
Many people cherry-pick their very best holiday recollections and carry them into adulthood. A recent poll found that Christmas is overwhelmingly the most popular and widelypracticed of all holidays. Regardless of religious affiliation, 9 out of 10 people celebrate some form of Christmas. More Money, Less Joy: Since most people cite simply spending time with loved ones as their favorite holiday activity, it’s surprising that we’re increasingly allocating precious resources on activities that we don’t actually enjoy. Statistics show that, year over year, we’re actually spending more money and time on stressful obligations that don’t contribute to our holiday bliss. Ironically, experts tell us that keeping holidays simple makes it more magical. Our pleasant childhood memories come not from gifts, but from warm feelings or pleasant experiences. A reassuring study out of Knox College confirms that most people feel the greatest holiday joy participating in soothing activities with loved ones. Conversely, when the focus is about gift giving, joy plummets and stress increases. The researchers concluded: “Simply said, a focus on materialism, while perhaps beneficial for the economy, distracts people from the true meaning of the season.” Parents who want to tame modern holiday consumerism face the not-so-subtle message that only substantial amounts of money and effort bring substantial holiday satisfaction. To counter these assumptions, here are 8 inexpensive suggestions for creating a meaningful holiday that your kids will hopefully pass on to their own children. Exchange Stocking Letters Of Appreciation: To place the 8

focus on connections rather than on gifts, fill stockings with letters of appreciation. The letters might outline what makes each family member special. You might also mention any enjoyable memories from the previous year or what made you proud of the recipient. Even small children can draw a picture that expresses their appreciation. Many people keep these letters forever. Enjoy A Cozy Night Of Christmas Movies And Books: A fun way to encourage both the activities and the togetherness that researchers found important is to host a Christmas movie and book night. Invite extended family. Make popcorn, s’mores, and hot chocolate. Snuggle up in cozy blankets or matching pajamas. (Don’t forget to take photos for next year’s holiday mantle.) Take In Sensory Sights And Sounds: Sensory details help cement fond memories. Pile into the car, crank up the Christmas music, and take in the sights and sounds of the holiday. Some families visit the same destinations every year, while others like to explore new locations. Many communities, schools, and organizations host holiday-themed plays, events, or shows which are either free or inexpensive. Some families attend annual religious services. Enjoy A Stress-Free Meal Together: Many families work hard to prepare a feast on Christmas day, so it’s fun to enjoy a labor-free meal before the big day. Give To Others: Whether it’s choosing an angel from an angel tree, making a meal for others, or visiting someone who could use a lift, allow your kids to feel the spirit of giving. The winter holidays are the perfect time to remind children that it can be more meaningful and lasting to give than to receive. Even better, giving feels good and will install lasting values and memories that can broaden your family’s definition of the true meaning of Christmas. Create A Sense Of Wonder: Barbara Kilikevich, author of A Mindful Christmas: How to Create a Meaningful, Peaceful Holiday, assures families that Santa can be an important part of a Christmas, since he “represents wonder, imagination, and maybe most importantly, belief.” Many families will limit Santa’s contribution to one special gift. Some suggestions for enhancing a child’s sense of awe: Leave ink-smudged “coal” fingerprints as proof of Santa’s snack. Spray-paint red “sleigh” landing strips on the lawn. Get Creative With Gift Giving: To demonstrate that the thought behind a gift is more important than the price tag, many families find inexpensive but creative ways to limit spending and to maximize meaning. Examples include drawing names and mandating that all gifts for adults be either hand-made, contributions to charity, or under $10. These limitations mean that thoughtful effort goes into gift giving, which makes the exchange much more meaningful. Most of us want a holiday that is about “connections, family, and caring for others,” says Kilikevich. “We have to stop buying into the notion that more is better and that extravagant, expensive gifts are equal to how much we care for and love one another.” Very few of us still have the possessions of Christmases past. Instead, we have lasting memories that will always warm us. With a little creativity, we can provide the same for our own families.. Charity Begins At Home
Encouraging A Giving Spirit In Children By Shannon Dean
We live in an age of selfies, where bullying is on the rise and divisiveness has increasingly become the norm. Societal messages tell us that our worth is tied not only to material possessions, but also to the superficial approval and envy that we obtain from social media “friends,” who sometimes barely know us. In this environment, it is socially acceptable to believe that we are the center of our own worlds. Ironically, experts tell us that the acceptance and achievement we crave can actually come from helping others instead of focusing solely on ourselves. Since one key factor for future success is empathy, our children may be better served by cultivating a giving spirit instead of chasing recognition or developing an individual “brand.” Michele Borba, who wrote Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed In Our All-AboutMe-World, says that “the ability to empathize affects our kids’ future health, wealth, authentic happiness, relationship satisfaction, and the ability to bounce back from diversity.” So with empathy being so vital, how do we encourage our children to identify with causes larger than themselves? Experts say that not only is this task not as difficult as we might think, it can also be an enjoyable experience that offers the elusive family time that we all want. 10

Children Are Born To Care Children are born hard-wired with the spirit of giving. That’s apparent in the toddler who weeps at the sight of an upset playmate, the preschooler who offers his teddy bear to a sick sibling, or the school-aged child who grabs a sponge when mom is washing the car. Yet, as they grow, children receive society’s not so subtle message that it’s sometimes unsafe or unwise to care. Fortunately, families are paramount in encouraging the behaviors that foster empathy. Research shows that caregivers who openly express warmth and compassion raise more empathic children. This process begins at birth and is often intuitive. Routinely giving a patient, timely, and consistent response to an infant’s cries or to a toddler’s skinned knee gives that child the message that helping others is important. Once a child is secure that the world is a safe and loving place, it’s easier for him to develop empathy. Experts say that often the first opportunity for a child to help others is in his own home, so they recommend assigning household responsibility. “Children need jobs,” says popular author and pediatrician Dr. William Sears. “Once a child learns a sense of responsibility for the household, a sense of responsibility to society will come naturally in the next stage of development.”

Kids Who Help Others Help Themselves Children who reach out to others enjoy an increased sense of well-being, self-worth, and optimism. Helping others builds up a child’s defense system against temptation and stress. Kids learn that it feels good to do the right thing, so it’s easier for them to say no to the wrong things. Since their personal worth is affirmed by their kindness toward others, they don’t need to search for worth in material possessions or in poor choices. Volunteering as a family can provide important quality family time while uniting members toward a common goal. Away from video games, social media, and television, families come to know and appreciate each other in new and valuable ways. Children who volunteer with their families are twice as likely to volunteer as an adult and to pass it on to their own children. Mary Thoele, author of Family Serve: Volunteer Opportunities for Families says that “volunteering is one of the ‘loudest’ actions you can take to show children what it truly means to be a contributing member of a community. By role-modeling this type of behavior, caregivers are beginning a tradition of compassion that can be passed on from one generation to the next.” Even The Busiest Families Can Fold Giving Into Their Schedules Jenny Friedman, author of The Busy Family’s Guide To Volunteering: Doing Good Together says that finding time to help others is easier than you may think. The key, she says, is to take a careful look at your current activities and then find ways to incorporate volunteering into those events. For example, families who already enjoy crafts can make get well cards or toys. Supplies for a neighbor in need can be gathered while doing your own errands. Families who are animal lovers may enjoy fostering an animal for deployed military. Experts suggest starting small, with a one-time/no further obligation commitment. If all family members enjoy the small experience and want to repeat the process, consider adding on, but always be conscious of overcommitting. Studies show that when giving to others becomes too large of a commitment or an obligation, the potential benefits are lost. It’s much easier and more comfortable to increase your commitment if you find that you have more time than to have to cut back and feel guilty because you’ve taken on too much. Teaching children to care and to offer their time, their talents, and their aid to others is a win-win situation. Developing their innate giving spirit will arm a child with skills that will defend him against the world’s stresses and will benefit him and future generations of your family for years to come. Charitable Ideas For Busy Families CREATING FOR OTHERS: Kids usually enjoy making crafts, designing cards, or writing letters. Many organizations are actively seeking families to provide lovingly crafted items, handwritten letters, heartfelt drawings, and cards. Most even offer easy step-by-step instructions. Typically, families complete the items and mail them to the organization, who in turn distributes them where they are needed. Here are a few ideas to get you started. 1. Make A Hospitalized Child Smile: This site allows families to make handmade cards for distribution to hospitalized kids. Over 100,000 children have received cards from all over the world. How To Choose The Best Volunteer Activities For Your Family By Sandi Schwartz
Volunteering as a family is such a wonderful way to bond and to feel better overall. When we make others happy, we experience an amazing biological phenomenon called a “helper’s high” that is the result of our brain releasing chemicals called endorphins. We experience an energy in our body that is similar to the rush we feel after we exercise. These positive feelings make our kids happier and healthier by reducing stress and anxiety and feelings of sadness, loneliness or depression. Finding the right family volunteer activities can be overwhelming at times. You may feel uncertain about what is expected and question whether your children can participate. It is so important that your children feel comfortable where you volunteer, get inspired by the work you do, and enjoy themselves. Without these three components, our children won’t reap all the amazing benefits of volunteering. Plus, we want them to love helping others so they continue to do so for a lifetime. When searching for the appropriate activity, consider the following priorities:
Project Focus The first step is to brainstorm as a family to decide what types of volunteer activities you are interested in 12

doing. Ask your children who they would like to help. Is there a particular cause they feel passionate about, such as feeding homeless people, making art for other children, helping animals, or visiting the elderly or sick? What interests, skills, and talents do your family members have? Do you prefer to be indoors or outdoors? Do you wish to work directly with people or do something quietly like painting or pulling weeds? The options are endless, so it is important to narrow down your choices and focus on projects that your family will get the most out of.
Organization’s Mission Do your research before you sign up with a specific organization. Find out the group’s history and how it got started, the goals and mission, who its leaders are, and how it is funded. Check their website, search online for press coverage, and visit sites like www.charitywatch. org and www.charitynavigator.org. If possible, ask a current or past volunteer about the pros and cons of the organization. Getting a referral from someone you know is the best option, especially because your children will be participating. projects that are close to home so you do not have to drag your kids far to volunteer. Check your local paper, call charitable organizations, or search online to find the perfect places for kids to volunteer in your area.
Cost Although rare, check to see if there are any fees to volunteer. You may also want to consider any other costs involved like travel, equipment such as certain clothing required, or requested products or monetary donations. Time Commitment Decide how much time you have to volunteer. It could be once a week, once a month, or once a year. Start slow and gradually increase your involvement if the project is working out well. You may choose to volunteer with different organizations each time to expose your children to a wide variety of experiences. Age Range Guidelines Look for activities that your whole family can participate in. Before you commit to a project, check to see if there are any age requirements listed. It may take some hunting around, but you should be able to find age-appropriate options. Even babies can take part in nursing home visits, charity walks, and beach clean ups. Activity Expectations Before you show up, find out exactly what you will be doing. Will there be heavy lifting involved? Will you have to get down and dirty? Will the project be a boring and repetitive task that will make your kids annoyed? Make sure the activity is something that your kids will actually enjoy before you invest your time. Safety No matter what, safety needs to come first when children are involved. You may want to avoid going to activities in neighborhoods that make you uncomfortable. Your kids may be scared to talk to strangers, so consider starting with familiar people and places. As they get older, you can start to venture out and expose them to more mature situations. Fun Factor Finally, if it isn’t an enjoyable experience for your kids, then what’s the point? Choose projects that involve your children in a fun way, but also teach and inspire them. Avoid topics and activities that are too serious and sad for young children. Be sure to engage with them afterwards and ask what they thought, and if they would be willing to do it again..
