How A School Planner Can Help Your Child Feeling overwhelmed by your children’s busy schedules? How do you keep track of it all? Many of us rely on our own planners, but have you ever considered pushing some of that responsibility onto your children? In second grade, my son’s school started distributing school planners to each student to track their homework and upcoming exams. Having a planner has been incredibly helpful to my son (am me!) to make sure he doesn’t miss any assignments and so he can schedule time throughout his week to study for quizzes and tests. In fact, planners offer so much more than just a place to write down homework.

Benefits Of School Planners Keep track of all commitments. Kids have hectic schedules between homework, tests, extracurricular activities, 6

social outings, and family time. By having one place to write down all of the moving parts, your kids will stay on track and not get overwhelmed by their to-do list. In addition, Dr. Maggie Wray, success skills coach and mentor for teens and young adults, explains how writing down assignments in real time as the teacher announces them makes it so much easier for students to remember their assignments. Plus, it takes the pressure off of having to memorize what the teacher said because it’s right there in black and white. Manage time. Planners offer a visual reminder of tasks that can be crossed off when finished to help our kids stay on task and get things done in a more productive way than a long laundry list or trying to remember everything by heart. Planners help free up space in our kids’ brains so they can focus on other important things like creativity or critical thinking skills. Having a written plan frees up working memory, which makes it easier for them to focus on the task at hand. When students jot down their assignments and activities in a planner, their brains can stop struggling to keep track of everything they have left to work on. Instead, they can be more mindful, pay closer attention, learn more effectively, and complete their work more efficiently. Serves as a journal. Today, planners are so much more than just a calendar. Many include inspirational quotes and writing prompts so students can record their thoughts, feelings, and memories. I especially love journals that include a place to list what we are thankful for on a daily basis since gratitude is so critical to a happy, healthy lifestyle. Encourage your older children and teens to use their planners as a journal and to keep them so they can look back at them years from now. Helps your child achieve goals. Planners can guide your children so they can easily set and achieve their goals throughout the year. From small goals like finishing their

daily math homework to larger goals like making honor role, their planner will help bring their dreams to fruition. Set aside time each month with your children to review their goals using the SMART goal approach and help them track their steps for each goal by using their planner. With each milestone they check off their list, they will feel a major sense of accomplishment.

The acronym SMART represents these goals: · Specific: The more specific we are, the more focused we can be in reaching a goal. When your children say they want to do better in school, ask questions to guide them in identifying a more detailed goal. For example, which subject would they like to do better in? What grade are they hoping to achieve? · Measurable: It is important that we help our children identify how they will know they reached their goal so it is clear what they are working towards. Is it an award, a grade, a project, or a skill they are looking to end up with in the end? · Achievable: Goals should be challenging within reason– not impossible. It is best to encourage our children to take one step at a time and not to make things too difficult for themselves. They will be happier if they reach a few easier goals than struggling to attain a really difficult one.

EDUCATION GUIDE · Relevant: Goals need to mean something to the children. They need to be excited and passionate about what they are working towards. If we set the goals for them, they will not gain anything from the experience and may possibly fail and be stressed over what we expect from them. · Timely: If we don’t identify when we hope to achieve a goal, we are unable to succeed. Ask your children to determine a realistic time frame for meeting the goal. Be sure to consider other obligations and interests when choosing the estimated finish line.

Tips For Using A School Planner Effectively

Use a paperclip, bookmark, or other marker to keep the previous weeks’ pages of the planner together so it always opens to the current week. This will reduce confusion and frustration hunting for the right page. Always use positive reinforcement regarding our child’s organizational efforts. Be sure to point out progress when you see it. Teach your kids to check their calendar in the planner before agreeing to appointments or tasks. Choosing The Best School Planner For Your Kids It can be overwhelming trying to decide which school planner to buy for your kids. Look for ones that have a daily homework list, daily action or to-do list, tabs or bookmarks, monthly calendar pages, a place to write down long-term goals, and a place to track grades. Also, ADDitudeMag contributor Susan Kruger, M.Ed., suggests purchasing a simple, thin, spiral-bound planner that uses a weekly layout with a separate space for each day. No matter which type of planner you choose for your kids, you will be on your way to improving your hectic afterschool time and minimizing the fights with your kids about forgetting to do their schoolwork. Plus, you will be teaching them organizational skills that will prepare them for the rest of their life.

The teachers at my son’s school require parents to review and sign the school planner everyday so we are engaged in the process, which I think is a wonderful idea. Here are some other tips to make sure your kids are using their planner effectively: Ask them to keep their planner with them at all times, such as in their backpack. Create a habit of looking at their planner as soon as you and your children get home after school. A Parent Pep Talk Expect Memories, Not Mayhem From The Middle School Years By Christina Katz

Any parent who has survived the middle school years will assure you that you can navigate them, too. Although the honeymoon period of elementary school is over and middle school comes with ample trials and tribulations for most kids, try not to expect the worst. Parents who welcome the challenges of middle school as opportunities for growth will be still be smiling by the time they attend the eighth grade promotion ceremony. Expect your child to face and overcome hurdles in middle school. Middle school is supposed to be about making mistakes and bouncing back from disappointments. Kids who navigate turbulence with spunk will mature in middle school. Kids who struggle with self-awareness and assertiveness are going to need extra support to develop skills they will need in high school. If you want your kids to thrive in middle school, don’t leave them to their own devices. Parents who expect everything to be hunky dory all the time will likely be disappointed. Parents who think kids can figure everything out for themselves at this age with little adult supervision may want to wake up. This is middle school, the preparation for high school, which is the preparation for college, which is preparation for adulthood. Your child is going to need you each and every day. Middle-schoolers are embarking on a two or three-year journey and they will come out the other end of the process transformed. Whether or not they are changed for the better is largely up to you, parents. Here is a list of some of the challenges middle school kids face and how tuned-in parents can help. Expressing Individuality. At the end of the summer, sit 10

down with your child and make a list of words that describe who he is. Do this every year before heading back to school to remind your student that he has interests and he’s allowed to like whatever he chooses. This list will evolve over the years, and that’s great, too. Expanding Learning Abilities. Middle school is an opportunity to try new ways of learning. Kids will get to do science labs for the first time, peer edit each other’s writing, work on projects with partners or in groups. Talk to your kids about how they are adjusting to these new learning modes so you can help smooth the way. Dealing With Social Pressures. How much social pressure exists in middle school? Tons. So role up your sleeves, parents, and always be ready to trouble-shoot. The best advice takes your child’s personality into account and eschews going along with all the crowds all the time. Middle school is a great time for kids to learn how to say, you do things your way and I’ll do things mine. Keeping Up With School Assignments & Project Deadlines. Kids tend to procrastinate. Some have trouble understanding that projects and papers must be worked on incrementally to be adequately prepared. Bouncing Back From Failure And Disappointments. Perhaps the toughest days in middle school are the not-making-the-cut days or the performing poorly on the test days or the getting sent to the principal days. How you respond to some twist on this trope is important. Kids need to process their feelings before they can bounce back and do the right thing. Be calm and patient as you help them figure it all out.

 

Test-driving Romantic Relationships. Some kids will dive right into relationships in middle school. Others will stay on the sidelines so they can spectate and speculate. Others may not seem interested at all. This is the beginning of practicing intimacy, so be sure to have lots of conversations with your child about the differences between healthy and unhealthy romantic relationships.

Prioritizing Needs. Kids have needs and those needs matter even when life is hectic. Maybe your daughter needs a jog bra for gym class. Maybe she needs a new notebook for algebra. Maybe she needs you to sign a field trip form and write a check. Shining Despite Speedbumps. Guess what, parents? Your kid is going to stumble, fall, and maybe even faceplant in middle school. But he will still have plenty of shining moments, where he is ecstatic and in his element. If your child isn’t having enough moments like these, call a family meeting, put your heads together, and look for new opportunities where he is more likely to succeed. Author, journalist, and writing coach Christina Katz is actually a bit sad that the middle school adventures are over. But she’s looking forward to the challenges that high school will bring.

What If Your Child Has A Wake-up Call?

If your child has a wake up call, try your best to stay calm. Never focus on what others will think. In fact, you may want to detach yourself from well-meaning friends for a time, as you address your child’s needs. A wake-up call is often a cry for help. Is your child getting as much attention and support as she needs? Sometimes a wake-up call is a by-product of the company your child keeps. Is your child getting mixed up with kids who thrive on acting out? If your child is in trouble at school, don’t make school professionals into enemies. Work with them to make sure your child has all the academic and creative outlets he needs. Kids who get in trouble at this age are often bored, under-supervised, and craving outlets. 7 Common Feelings of NICU Parents By Sarah Lyons

Sitting beside your baby in the NICU can bring an array of emotions for parents. Seeing your child hooked up to machines with wires attached to their body can be scary and overwhelming. The majority of babies are in the NICU due to premature birth (born prior to 37 weeks gestation) but babies can be admitted for other reasons such as breathing problems low birth weight, heart conditions, and other complications. This experience can bring a variety of emotions that are normal, yet often confusing for parents.

Loss

Like any expecting parents, NICU parents dreamed of how the end of pregnancy would be, wrote a birth plan, and envisioned how the first few hours after birth would go. Mom looked forward to nursing her child, bringing home a healthy newborn, and starting life with the new addition to their family. When baby is in the NICU, the experience is very different. Moms may grieve the loss of the end of the pregnancy and feel jealousy towards other mothers who carried their babies full term and experienced a typical birth with big, healthy babies. It is frustrating to have to wait for the appropriate time to feed your baby, ask for help picking him up, and worry about germs when he comes home due to lower immunity. Feelings a sense of loss over these things is totally normal. Acknowledge your feelings and talk them through with a loved one or a professional counselor. In time you can begin to set new dreams and goals for your family’s future.

Fear

Fear is a common response to having a baby in the NICU, and it is totally normal. Most parents do not have previous experience with the NICU and this creates a fear of the unknown. Parents worry their child will have long term medical issues or that they are not capable of caring for them at home. The nurses and doctors are there to explain things to you and help you understand what is 16

going on. Their goal is for you to feel comfortable caring for your child, both in the hospital setting and after it is time to go home.

Guilt

Parents often question what they could have done differently in order to have a different outcome, a normal birth, and no NICU stay. Mothers in particular blame themselves for the situation. Feelings of guilt and blame are common when baby is in the NICU but most premature babies who are born early for unknown reasons. In the majority of cases nothing could have been done to prevent premature birth. Discuss your feelings with your partner and with the medical staff in the NICU. They will help you work through your feelings and move forward as a family.

Feeling “on display”

Many NICU’s have open areas with multiple cribs. Parents can feel like they get little or no privacy. Curtains can do little to keep conversations private and nursing moms can feel like they are out in the open. Nurses and doctors are in and out and it can feel like they are “watching” you all the time. While uncomfortable, parents should note that the NICU staff is watching to make sure you know how to care for your baby, they are there to help. Some parents may have feelings of anger that their child is in the NICU. It is easy to blame doctors, NICU staff, or your partner for the situation. You may feel angry that someone else is taking care of your child or that you are in this situation in the first place. Anger can be expressed in different ways. One person may express their anger by acting rude, demanding, and vocal while another may retreat from the situation or into themselves resulting in a form of silent treatment. Try to let go of anger and focus on you and your baby. Vent to a friend, write in a journal, or use exercise as an outlet. Feelings of anger take a lot of energy and you will need to save all of yours for taking care of yourself and baby.

Do Away with Diaper Rash By Sarah Lyons

As parents we do everything in our power to avoid an uncomfortable and painful rash for our little ones, but realistically, even the most diligent parent has to deal with diaper in the first few years of parenthood. Knowing the common culprits of diaper rash and how to treat it will help keep baby happy and rash free.

Common Culprits of Diaper Rash Culprit # 1: Infrequent Diaper Changes We have the best intentions when it comes to changing our babies but sometimes things happen and that wet diaper stays on a little too long causing red, sore, irritated skin. Even the most absorbent diaper can allow wetness to touch the skin, which can leave baby’s bottom red and irritated. Culprit # 2: Yeast Infection The diaper area is warm and moist, making it easy for bacterial infections, like yeast, to grow and flourish. Yeast passes through the child’s digestive system and eventually lands in the diaper next to the warm damp skin. This can result in a rash in the folds of the skin. (babycenter.com) Regular diaper creams won’t improve this type of rash. It’s best to speak to your doctor about treatment, which may include an antifungal cream. Culprit # 3: Allergies or Sensitivities It is possible your baby is sensitive to the brand of diapers or wipes you are using. Your child could also have an allergy to a new food that is causing loose stools, which in turn cause added irritation and wetness in the diaper area. With some trial and error you may be able to narrow down the cause of the rash and help your child’s rash improve greatly with a few small changes.

Treat and Prevent Diaper Rash Clean and Dry - Make sure baby is clean and dry before putting on a new diaper. Remember to pat baby dry rather than rub which will further irritate skin Air Dry - Let baby go diaper free. When weather allows, spend some time outside sans diaper. The fresh air will help baby heal faster. A Gentler Clean - Use mild, alcohol free wipes or try using a squirt bottle of water to gently clean baby. 18

Read the Label - Use a diaper cream with Zinc Oxide or Petroleum Jelly on the ingredient list. (www.webmd.com) Apply a protective layer of cream to help prevent future rash. Go Green - Cloth diapers made with natural fabrics are gentler than disposable diapers which may contain chemicals that can irritate baby. Try Homemade - Making homemade wipes or diaper cream allows you to decide what ingredients touch your baby’s skin and therefore avoid any harsh ingredients store bought products may contain. Healthy Belly - Probiotics can help prevent yeast infections. Check with your pediatrician to see if he can recommend a probiotic that is safe for your child. “Some research has shown that consuming probiotics... can positively affect your child’s balance of bacteria.” (parents.com) Try something new - Experiment with a new brand of diaper or wipes, change your cloth diaper detergent, make sure your baby has a proper fitting diaper, take note of any reactions to new foods, and remember every baby is different so what works for one child may not be a good fit for another child. Chances are your baby will develop a diaper rash at least once before potty training is complete but with these tips, baby should be comfortable and rash free in no time. The Benefits of Prenatal Massage Therapy By Denise Yearian

Maisey Wooten was in the third trimester of her pregnancy when she came down with a cold and cough, which caused her to pull a muscle in her ribcage. “Since I was pregnant, I didn’t want to take pain killers or medicine. So I asked my doctor about going to a prenatal massage therapist,” recalls this mother of two. “He thought it was a great idea.” Jennifer Stempel was three months pregnant with twins when she received her first prenatal massage. “I got large so quickly and was having a lot of leg cramps and lower back pains. I talked with my doctor about it, and she highly recommended it.” Many women today are seeking relief from the aches and pains of pregnancy through prenatal massage therapy. “It has been proven to safely eliminate or reduce many of the normal discomforts of pregnancy,” says Kathy Roberts, 25-year veteran registered nurse and licensed massage therapist. Beth Alexander, another licensed massage therapist, agrees. “When you get pregnant you’re going to have pain. The ligaments are loosening up, the spine and skeleton are shifting, and there is a lot of stress on the joints. Since you want to avoid taking drugs, massage therapy is a good way to take care of those discomforts without the use of medication.” Stempel found this to be true. “During my second pregnancy, I had a lot of sciatic pain—to the point where I couldn’t walk. The massage therapist worked on me for three days in a row, and when I left I was fine.” 20

Though pain relief is the main reason mothers go for prenatal massages, there are emotional benefits too. “Some women may have had a hard time getting pregnant or may be stressed during their pregnancy,” states Alexander. “The massages can help you relax.” “Relaxation was a big thing for me,” says Wooten. “I was pregnant with my second child and was already doing so much with my first. I could just go and relax. It was amazing!” Before getting a prenatal massage, women should check with their doctor. “If a woman has had a miscarriage before or has any sort of predisposition to anything that may be of concern, she should check with her doctor first,” suggests Alexander. There are also acupressure areas that may bring on contractions. But according to Roberts, this should be of little concern if the right massage therapist is chosen. “If a mother goes to someone certified in prenatal, the therapist will know what areas to avoid and how deep to work.” Therein lies the difference between a prenatal massage and a regular one. “With a regular massage, we work deep tissue,” says Alexander. “But with a prenatal massage, we have to work at a lighter level.” Positioning is different too. “I have a special prenatal massage table so we can do face down if we need to,” says Roberts. “We also do side-lying positions—it’s whatever the mom prefers. Her head also needs to be elevated, and her body should be tilted to the left so the baby isn’t pressing on the large vessels.” “When I went during my third trimester, the FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

BABYTOTS massage therapist suggested I lay on my side with pillows between my legs and under my head,” recalls Wooten. “She would ask if there were certain aches and pains that needed to be addressed. Since I got a lot of headaches and leg cramps, she focused on those muscles. The massage would alleviate the pain and I would feel better. Then I would return the next month.” “I usually have clients coming in about once a month during their last trimester,” says Alexander. “I know some women who schedule their massages to coincide with their OB appointments.” So where does one look for a massage therapist? Stempel networked with the massage therapist she had before she got pregnant. Wooten called a local parenting resource center. Ask your doctor or childbirth class instructor for a recommendation, or check with friends who may have had prenatal massages, suggests Roberts. Most important, call and talk with the therapist. “Ask specific questions and find out what her background is. Be sure the person is a licensed massage therapist, nationally certified in massage and body works, and certified in prenatal massage.” Alexander agrees. “The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) has a website (http://www. amtamassage.org) with a link to find a therapist in your area. Once you find one locally, call and ask for their qualifications.” When labor and delivery is over, consider the benefits of returning postpartum. “Postpartum massage therapy is as important as prenatal,” says Roberts. “It’s a time when your body is going through so many changes. There are so many demands on your time, and you get so little sleep.” “I went back regularly for months after my son was born,” concludes Wooten. “It was just what I needed. Some women may think the money can be used for something else, especially when she’s raising a family. I know—I used to think that too. But I found it made me a better wife and mother. It was worth every dime!”
