Up Your Safety Game This Summer Accidents and injuries spike this time of year. Here’s help. By Malia Jacobson
Summers are made for family fun. But when temperatures rise, so do safety risks for kids. Per the National Safety Council, preventable accidental deaths peak during summer from dangers that include drowning, car accidents, and fires. It’s also a time when nonfatal injuries from things like grills, fireworks, and sunburn are more likely. Here’s how to prioritize simple safeguards that keep kids safer all summer long.
Drowning No parent wants to think about it, but drowning dangers consistently lead the CDC’s list of unintentional injury deaths for children. It’s the most common cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4 and in the top five for older children and teens. Per research, regular swim lessons can offer a boost to kids’ physical and even cognitive development and offer parents some peace-of-mind, but even strong swimmers aren’t safe from drowning. Although a small study found that formal swim lessons can reduce drowning risk in children ages one to four, the American Academy of Pediatrics warns that preschool-age children don’t have the motor skills needed for true independent swimming and should never be considered water safe. Kelsey Ashe, a mom of three who works in healthcare, safeguards her family’s pool with door alarms, strict rules about adult supervision, age-appropriate lifejackets for the kids and guests, and a secure 300-lb capacity pool cover that stays on year-round except when the family 6

swims together. “If anyone falls onto the pool, the cover will prevent them from sinking in, and that probably gives me more peace of mind that anything,” she says.
Wheels Steer clear of the summer spike in auto-related dangers for kids by following the rules of the road safeguarding against heatstroke death. Check out local car seat laws and keep children in recommended seats as long as possible, never mix alcohol and driving, and keep your phone somewhere non-distracting during car trips. Kids’ smaller bodies heat up 3-5 times faster than adults and they can experience heatstroke within minutes in a hot car. The ACT campaign from Safe Kids Worldwide encourages parents to Avoid heatstroke by never leaving a child in a car even for a minute, Create reminders like placing something you’ll need like your work bag or phone near a child’s car seat, and Take action by calling 911 if you see a child left in a car.
Burns Our longer summer days mean more sunlight and more sunburn risk. Kids can sunburn in as little as 15 minutes, and a blistering burn is a serious condition requiring emergency medical care, says Amit Joshi, MD, internal medicine physician with Bellevue’s Overlake Medical Center. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA
higher on all exposed skin (even lips) 15 minutes before going outside, and reapplying every two hours or after sweating or swimming. Per the AAP, sunscreens aren’t recommended for babies under six months, so keep little ones in the shade and choose photoprotective hats and clothing instead. Seeking cover during peak sunlight hours, from 10am to 4pm, lowers the risk of sunburn and keeps everyone cooler and more comfortable. The sun isn’t our only source of heat—don’t forget about burns from grills and campfires. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends designating a 3-foot safety zone around grills and open flames. When burns happen, run them under cool water for 3-5 minutes, and seek medical help for any burn larger than palm-size.

Bites Summer’s outdoor adventures can bring on bites of all kinds. Parents can protect kids from insect bites by removing standing water around their home (think buckets, birdbaths and baby pools) and dressing kids in long sleeves and pants for hikes, says Dr. Joshi. “Even if children don’t have known allergies to bites, parents should be able to recognize the signs of anaphylactic reaction like swelling of lips, face, eyes, hands, and feet— any facial swelling or wheezing means kids should get medical care. Minor swelling and irritation can probably be treated with an over-the-counter antihistamine.” Don’t forget bites from four legged friends, either— each year over half of the country’s 4.7 million reported dog bites happen to kids under 14. Teach kids to never approach an unfamiliar dog, always ask a dog’s owner if petting is OK and allow the dog to sniff their hand first, and never to run toward or away from a dog. If a dog attacks or knocks a child over, roll into a ball, cover your face and lie still.
Air In many areas, wildfires are a summer staple, and the resulting smoky air can make outdoor play unsafe for kids. Smoky, polluted air is especially hard on babies and kids under 5, says Joshi. “Lung development is still ongoing up the age of 5 and exposure to airborne pollutants can actually damage the lungs’ normal, healthy development.” During summer’s smoky season, follow local air quality recommendations for “sensitive groups,” avoid vigorous exercise outdoors, and plan outings for beaches and waterways, where winds may keep some smoke away. As soon as the air clears, head back outside to enjoy your summer, safely. Malia Jacobson is a nationally published heath and family journalist. To Advertise Call 305-4181

EDUCATION GUIDE
From Kindergarten to College Your Guide to Navigating School Transitions By Christa Melnyk Hines
Transitions are tough on kids and parents. Here’s what you need to know to help your child successfully navigate school milestones--and what to watch for each step of the way. Welcome to kindergarten. This year, your child will begin to develop a sense of independence and selfconfidence. To ensure long-term academic success, foster resilience and a growth mindset. “Allow them to make make mistakes, to keep trying and reward the effort not the action,” says Tara Walrod, a school counselor. For example, instead of telling your child how smart they are, you might say: “You worked so hard and did it by yourself!”
them learn the ropes
What to watch for:
Each evening, ask your youngster questions about their day, like: “What did you talk about during sharing time today?”If your child seems unhappy or lagging behind their peers, check in with the teacher.
Find your middle school mojo.
■■Practice buckling and unbuckling their seatbelt ■■Learn to independently take jacket on and off ■■Ability to get their backpack on/off and zip/unzip it ■■Help them recognize their name in writing ■■Continue reading daily with your child ■■Attend school orientation events like kindergarten
Middle school can be challenging as kids adjust to multiple teachers and a larger school environment. For the most part, Dr. Jim McMullen, an assistant superintendent and former middle school principal, says kids manage the transition better than their parents might expect, especially when they take advantage of 5th grade school visits and orientations to reduce their apprehension. “Be there to support them and process with them at night and give advice. Kids pretty quickly become acclimated with the school and do really well,” McMullen says.
■■Foster fair play, winning and losing gracefully, and flex-

Tune into your child’s social media use. “Parents have to know what their child is looking at and posting-and not gaining self-esteem from ‘likes,’ but instead from making in moments at school,” Walrod says.
Time for the high school hustle.
As your student enters high school, they’ll begin to face more pressures related to time management, academics, extracurriculars and their social life. An active school life and a healthy support system is critical to your high schooler’s wellbeing. “Through high school, kids should love going to school, whether their connection is with their friends, teachers, athletic team, band or theater,” McMullen says. “Kids who are engaged do really well academically and socially.”
Tips for success:
■■Attend tours, orientations, and school events ■■Get involved in summer opportunities at the school ■■Check the school’s website for books or other sum-
mer assignments due before school begins
■■Continue to prioritize reading and academics ■■Encourage your teen to get involved by following
their interests
What to watch for:
“We know that high school is a super stressful time for our kids so make sure they have strategies in place to calm anxieties and stress,” Walrod says. Continue nurturing your relationship with your teen through conversation. Model and encourage stress management skills like deep breathing exercises, quiet breaks, periodic disengagement from social media, physical exercise, and time with friends and close family.
Moving onto college.
Begin researching higher education options between your child’s sophomore and junior year of high school. Plan visits to colleges or technical schools either the summer before junior year or during the junior year. “These visits are your first opportunity to get to To Advertise Call 305-4181

EDUCATION GUIDE know the school and see if it might be a good fit, and this will help narrow down the options,” says Alice Arredondo, Ed.D., Director of Admissions, University of Missouri Kansas City. The transition into college life can take about a year, as your student learns to live independently while managing their time between school work, their social life and other interests.
Tips for success:
■■During their senior year of high school, in exchange
for responsible decision-making, remove their curfew
■■Teach them how to do laundry ■■Discuss how to manage money and the pros and cons
of credit cards, which is one of the first ways college freshmen get into financial trouble ■■Remind your child their family is available whenever they need support or feel overwhelmed ■■Create expectations about how often you will touch base with each other ■■Foster a sense of openness to all types of conversations, no matter how difficult ■■Check in with your child periodically (preferably not daily) ■■Leave supportive messages on their phone
■■Understand that they may not return your call right
away
What to watch for: “If you notice that your child isn’t responding to any messages, seems depressed or anxious when you call, experiences significant weight changes or seems overly stressed, you should take the time to see them in person and better assess the situation,” Arredondo says. “A small dose of these things may be normal during the college transition but excessive deviations from who you know your child to be should be concerning.” If your student hasn’t signed a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) waiver, you won’t be able to access their grades, finances, personal well-being or any information outside of a public directory. You can ask academic advisors or campus health offices to check on your young adult, but they won’t be able to provide information back without a waiver. “This is why it’s important to establish an open line of communication with your child before they leave for college,” Arredondo says. Freelance writer Christa Melnyk Hines is the mom of two adolescent sons, including one who is looking forward to starting high school this fall.

Add it Up: 25 Ways to Make Math Fun By Janeen Lewis
Does your elementary-aged child suddenly get a stomach ache the day of a math test? Maybe your middle schooler constantly declares “I hate math!” or your high schooler doesn’t like Algebra because he or she doesn’t think it will ever be used in adult life. If any of this sounds familiar, there is good news. Recent research shows that despite what they may think, most students can succeed at high levels in math. If parents model a positive outlook, children are more likely to feel the same way. Research also shows that students would like math more if they understood how it applied to their future. There are many fun and easy ways to embrace math as a natural part of everyday life, make it interesting and relevant, and ultimately
help children become better at it. Here are 25 ways you can help your child succeed at math. ■■1. Use measuring and fraction skills when you bake or
cook with your child. When the measuring cup or spoon you need is dirty, ask your child to use a different size utensil correctly to get an equivalent amount.
■■2. At the grocery, have your child figure out how many
pounds of produce to get without going over a certain dollar amount. For example, say “Please weigh and bring me three dollars’ worth of granny smith apples.”
■■3. Take it outside. Make hopscotch with addition or
multiplication facts in the squares. Pick up sticks or use

a budget and let them shop for the ingredients without going over the budget.
■■7. Volunteer in your child’s math class. You will learn
about what your child is learning, the teacher’s expectations and how to better help your child at home.
■■8. If your child is struggling in math, ask your child’s
teacher to recommend a tutor or call the math department at your local university. There are probably math majors willing to tutor.
■■9. Plan a trip together, calculate the miles you will travel
at a designated speed. Decide how long it will take to get there.
■■10. Give your child an allowance that they have to man-
age. Together decide how much they will save, spend and give away.
■■11. If your child is a teen with a job, help them write a
budget and open a savings account.
■■12. When shopping for a new toy, backpack or school
supply, look at sale flyers from several stores. Have your child find which store has the best bargain for the item they want.
■■13. Sing songs and watch math music videos. There
are a plethora of these on the Internet and at educational stores. Two of my favorites are Schoolhouse Rock! (Multiplication Rock and Money Rock) and Numberock. They are catchy ways to teach important math concepts.
■■14. Read picture books. “Bedtime Math” includes short
stories with math questions for different age levels. It promotes kids to discuss math strategies. Other good

EDUCATION GUIDE ones include “The Greedy Triangle,” “The Grapes of Math” and” How Big is a Foot?” ■■15. Have your tween or teen pick out the make, model and year of a car they would like to buy when they are 18. Look up the value of the car and figure out how much they will have to earn every week until they are 18 to buy the car. ■■16. Walk around your house and find examples of paral-
lel and perpendicular lines in doorways, walls, furniture and more.
■■17. Find various geometric shapes around your house
and yard. Draw or take photographs and label the shapes and what they comprise (for instance, the roof, the mailbox, the deck railing) and make your own version of a book like Tana Hoban’s Shapes, Shapes, Shapes.
■■18. Have daily countdowns to special events, or do a
___ shopping days until Christmas starting on January 1st.
■■19. Challenge both genders in math. Don’t promote
gender stereotypes that suggest boys are better at math and girls are better at reading. Research shows that while girls do well in math in middle school and high
school, women are underrepresented in post graduate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) jobs. ■■20. Play board and card games that inspire math-
ematical thinking. Some to try are Uno, Crazy Eights, Mathopoly, Qwirkle, Yahtzee, and Rummikub.
■■21. Make up a word problem of the day every day and
have your child solve it. Keep it fun and funny.
■■22. Cut food into fractional parts and talk about it. Use
the food fractions to introduce equivalent fractions.
■■23. Take a tour of your local bank. Talk to your child
about words like loan, interest and principal.
■■24. Celebrate Pi day and talk about what it means and
why it is important. Make your child’s favorite pie.
■■25. Make it hands on. Math manipulatives like rulers,
seamstress tapes, tangrams, pattern blocks, play money, fraction bars, counters, and geometric shapes are great for kids to make discoveries with while playing.

Quick Tips to Find the Right Pediatrician By Denise Morrison Yearian
Parents are often clouded with confusion when it comes to finding the right pediatrician. Following are 8 ways to help you find a family doctor you can feel both confident in and comfortable with.
1. Gather names. Get recommendations from local parents and/or your obstetrician. Or go line to the American Academy of Pediatrics [AAP] for a listing of local doctors. Once you have several, log onto your health care provider’s website to confirm these doctors are covered under your plan.
2. Check position and status. Most pediatrician’s websites list where the doctor received his undergraduate degree, did is residency and pediatric training, and if he is board certified. Certification through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) isn’t required in some states but it shows the doctor has obtained the ABP Maintenance of Certification standard and is following established guidelines. An FAAP (Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics) title means the doctors has passed ABP boards at least once and practices according to AAP standards. Likewise, log onto the state board of medical practice website to see if there are any complaints lodged or disciplinary action taken against any of the doctors on your list.
3. Determine your priorities. Location and office hours are important, but so is the size of the practice. Some parents want a solo practice with one doctor and a small staff who knows their family well. A small practice will, however, have limited hours and call upon other practices to help when he is out. Other parents opt 18

for a group practice, which offers more availability in hours. Here, a doctor is always present, though the child may not be seen by his own pediatrician during sick visits. Larger practices may also have sub-specialists with whom doctors can consult if a specific need arises. Parents may also want a pediatrician who is directly affiliated with a local children’s hospital.
4. Prepare questions. Before contacting prospective pediatricians, create a list of questions, leaving space to jot down answers given by the staff. Better yet, make a chart or spreadsheet with columns that address specific questions and rows of recommended doctors so you can compare practices (see list of suggested questions below).
5. Consider policies and procedures. Find out how questions are addressed during and after office hours. In some larger practices, a phone nurse takes care of over-the-counter questions to make the best use of everyone’s time. Parents can get their questions answered quickly, and it gives doctors time to do what they need to do. Also find out the practice’s policies regarding illnesses and afterhours emergencies – when pediatricians are available by phone and if they have a call-in period each day to take questions. Moreover, ask how quickly sick visits can be scheduled and the procedure if there is an after-hours emergency.
6. Schedule consults. After you have called prospective practices, narrow your list and set up face-to-face interviews. Watch how the staff interacts with patients and people on the phone. Check out the reception area for cleanliness and safety. Look for good Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

When you meet the physician, find out his philosophies regarding circumcision, breastfeeding, use of medications, alternative treatments, preventive care and other health matters that are important to you. Do they line up with your views? Also note if he listens attentively to your concerns, is patient with explanations, and interacts with your child on his level.

Once you have selected a pediatrician, hold onto the information you gathered about other practices. Since health care plans often change and physicians sometimes move in and out of plans, you may need to find another physician in the future.
Questions to ask prospective pediatricians: ■■What are the office hours? ■■How do you handle telephone questions during and
after hours? How quickly will I get a call back from the doctor or nurse during office hours? How quickly after hours? ■■Can I get a same day appointment for my sick child? What are the chances I’ll get to see my doctor (versus a different doctor or nurse practitioner)? ■■How do you cover after hours and weekend appointments? ■■Is this a solo or group practice? If group, how many doctors are in the practice? ■■Is there a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP) in your office? What is her role in the practice? ■■Is the doctor certified through the ABP (American Board of Pediatrics)? Is he a member of the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics)? ■■What is your stance toward circumcision, breastfeeding, immunizations and use of medications? ■■What can I expect during well visits? ■■Where are lab tests done? ■■Do you have separate sick- and well-child waiting rooms? ■■What is the typical wait time for visits? ■■What are the fees for services? Do they have to be paid in full at the time of the visit or can payment be arranged? ■■If we need a specialist for additional care, what is your policy on referrals? ■■Which hospitals are you affiliated with? ■■Will the doctor come to the hospital to examine my baby after delivery? -Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and six grandchildren. Maintaining a Healthy Pregnancy Get proper prenatal care: When you first have a
positive pregnancy test, it is important to make an appointment with your doctor. Proper prenatal care is essential to a healthy pregnancy because your doctor will be able to perform tests for any complications wor risks. They will also be able to advise you if any medications you are currently taking are unsafe for pregnancy. The doctor will also give you a list of over-the-counter drugs you can take for everything from heartburn to the common cold. As you progress in your pregnancy, you will also go over what to expect at delivery and discuss a birth plan.
Choose a healthy diet: Now that you are eating for
two it’s important to choose foods that are healthy for both you and baby. Pregnant women need about 300 calories more than their norm and should focus on eating foods that are high in protein rather than empty calories. There are some foods that should be avoided such as raw and rare meats, fish high in mercury, excessive caffeine, and unpasteurized dairy. Moms-to-be should also add a prenatal vitamin high in folic acid to their daily routine and avoid alcohol, smoking, and illegal drugs.
Get sufficient rest: Growing a baby is generally
exhausting. Listen to your body and rest when you can. If you
By Sarah Lyons
cannot catch a nap in the middle of the day, take the time to put your feet up and relax for short periods. It is important to be aware of how you feel. If your body says get up and move then do so, but if your body is feeling run down and sleepy, then give yourself the chance to do that.
Stay active: Exercise is healthy for everyone, even preg-
nant women. Talk to your doctor about what type of exercise is allowed during your pregnancy. Most pregnant can do light exercise like walking or swimming and some may be allowed more depending on their pre-pregnancy fitness level. Exercise can help maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy and also keep up your strength which is needed for delivery.
Manage stress and emotional health
While many pregnant women are concerned with their unborn baby, it is important to take care of yourself as well. Moms-to-be should make sure they are managing their stress level and are healthy both emotionally and physically. If you have feelings of sadness or are feeling overwhelmed seek help from a friend, family member, or your doctor. Expecting a baby is an exciting and busy time. With these tips along with the guidance of your doctor, you can expect a healthy pregnancy and baby-to-be.
