Thanksgiving is fast approaching! November is the perfect month to realize the many things we are blessed with, and to show gratitude to others. In preparation for Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family, read our article, The Dish on Manners, by Laine Lipsky to help your children be well behaved at the dinner table. Calling all artists! The City of San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is holding a contest open to current Bexar County residents and student artists. The winning artwork will be the official artwork for the 2016 citywide commemoration. This artwork will be used as the visual representation of the 2016 theme: “King Week: Uniting Communities to Advance Humanity.” Artwork will be accepted until Friday, November 6, 2015 at 5 p.m. A panel of community judges will be selecting the winning artist, who will be publicly recognized as the creator of the official 2015 commemoration artwork, and will receive two all-access passes to all of the Official 2016 MLK, Jr. Commission events. “San Antonio is home to one of the nation’s largest commemorations honoring Dr. King, and utilizing the work of a local artist for our annual commemoration is a great addition to the city’s official events,” said Brandon Logan, Chair of the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. The city of San Antonio has celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. since 1987, with an annual series of events leading up to one of the largest marches in the United States honoring Dr. King. The 2016 March and Commemorative Program will take place on Monday, January 18, 2016. The San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission organizes the march and leads the community effort on a series of official events that pay tribute to Dr. King. King Week 2016 will include several days of educational and cultural programming in locations throughout San Antonio. The Dish on Manners Manners: To Teach or Not to Teach … That is the Question. Teaching table manners to preschoolers is a dicey topic, so to speak. Parents are encouraged to really feel this out for themselves before they either enforce something they don’t believe in, or remain passive about something they truly value. The answer for each family rests with that family. Most parents seek balance. They want mealtimes to be fun and relaxing—but if their children behave like animals, they might actually feel frustrated and tense. They want their children to show decent manners in restaurants and at other people’s tables—but they don’t want to impose rigid rules at home to achieve that outcome. Many parents wait. They have general rules, but they wait to teach specific manners until their children are older and can naturally learn skills more easily. Other parents feel it’s better to start early, rather than correct “bad habits” later on. Neither is right or wrong. The right path for you is the one that feels best in your family. The trick is to find your path, stick to it the best you can, watch your little ones for cues, and make adjustments as you go. If you decide to go in for a little helping of manners, here are some nuggets to get started: 8

Prepare: Set the Stage

Increase the odds of success and enjoyment as you attempt to tame your sweet little beast. Think of this as a warm-up before your workout. Here are guidelines for a great start:

■■Have realistic expectations. Children are not mini-

adults; they go through real developmental changes that drive their behavior. For example, if you demand that a young one sit still for too long, you will both end up miserable. If your child repeatedly resists something, take a week off. New skills can take a long, long time to master. So, go easy on yourself and your children— learning is hard.

■■Get adults on the same page. Partners must support

each other’s rules, or they will feel resentful and their children will be confused. Find the sweet spot where the adults truly buy-in and can easily model the same desired behavior.

■■Invite the children. To maximize the chances of

skills. Ask for their ideas too, in words or pictures. Family projects can be fun!

Practice: Try, Try Again. Repeat.

Be mentally prepared to repeat everything – a lot. A lot, a lot. This may annoy you, but it is totally normal. To help ease the way, use these methods every time you practice: ■■Behave the way you want your children to

behave. This is hands-down the best way to teach manners, because your children deeply want to be like you. If you want to hear “please” and “thank you,” make sure you say them…always. Are toys at the table distracting? Model by stowing your toys during mealtime: phone, computer, book, etc. (Heads-up: this one is the hardest for most parents.)

mealtime. Invite your trainees and some stuffed animals for snacks and practice “dinner.” Teach only one new manner at a time, to keep things manageable. Focus on progress not perfection.

Perform: Show What You Know

After some practice, offer your children a playful chance to perform their new skills—without expectations of perfection. Please note: these ideas aren’t meant as a bribe for good manners and shouldn’t be withheld for punishment. You and your little ones have worked hard and that’s that. It’s time to celebrate your efforts! ■■Go Out to Eat. Choose a casual restaurant at an off-

peak time. Tell your server you are celebrating your hard work. Clink glasses and say, “Cheers to us!”

■■Invite Others In. Ask an adult to come over for a

snack. Prep your guest to comment specifically on the children’s manners. Openly say how proud you are.

■■Fancy Feast. Dress up your table with flowers

and LED “candles” for a snack or meal. Praise your children for their hard work. Ask how they feel about manners.

Talk turkey. In the U.S. and Canada, many food banks serve traditional Thanksgiving dinners to people in need. Find a food bank near you using the search engine at FeedAmerica.com and volunteer to work at an upcoming turkey drive. There, you’ll have the privilege of saying thank you to the generous people who bring in the birds, and all the side dish fixings.

Give the gift of time. Start a family time bank to give kids a chance to help one another. Your teenager might spend an hour designing student council campaign posters for your middle school student who pays it back by folding his big brother’s share of the laundry. Fill everybody’s bucket. Teach young kids the value of good deeds with the book Fill a Bucket by Carol McCloud and Katherine Martin. To reinforce its message, ask kids to write down good deeds on slips of paper and put them in small tin buckets labeled with family members’ names. Pretty soon, kids will be clambering to see who can fill up their bucket first. And everyone will be happier for it.

7 Family Games

for all the Turkeys at Your Thanksgiving by Pam Molnar

Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to gather – up until dinner is over, that is. When their bellies are full, the men retire to watch football, the kids scatter to empty rooms and the women are often left with kitchen duty. Avoid the after dinner segregation and keep them together with these seven Thanksgiving games and activities.

Toss & Tell –All players sit in a circle. Start by tossing a small turkey stuffed animal or small football to a player and ask a question like, “Who do you think will make it to the Super Bowl this year?” or “What is your favorite memory from elementary school?” This multigenerational game will be a hit!

Leaf Blower – Split the group into two teams. Each team needs to blow a leaf from Point A to Point B using a straw in a relay race style. The next player will blow it back from Point B to Point A until everyone has had a turn. First team to finish wins.

Dress the Turkey – Select a volunteer from the family to be the turkey. Using brown crepe paper streamers, wrap up the “turkey” until he is covered. Decorate the turkey with a yellow beak, feet and colorful feathers made from construction paper or foam sheets. Don’t forget your camera!

I was So Hungry – This memory game is a fun way to get the party laughing. The players sit at the table or in a circle. The first player starts, “I was so hungry that I ate a juicy drumstick for Thanksgiving.” The next person adds something like, “I was so hungry that I ate a juicy drumstick and a mound of mash potatoes for Thanksgiving.” Keep repeating and adding until the whole party is stuffed.

Pass the Cranberries – Using a turkey baster, pick up a cranberry and bring it to a bowl on the other side of the room. The first team to pass all their cranberries from one bowl to the other wins.

Stuffed Turkey – Wrap a piece of candy in brown box tape. Continue to wrap the tape in a ball, adding additional pieces of candy as you go. The size of the ball will depend on how many players and candy you have. (This is a great way to use up the rest of your Halloween candy.) To play, place the ball in the center of the table. Using a pair of dice, each player takes a turn rolling for doubles. If you get doubles, you can start unwrapping the ball to get candy for as long as it takes the next player to get doubles. The ball is then passed to that player and so on until the ball is completely unwrapped. 12

Fill your Plate – This is a two part game. Use free printables of Thanksgiving meal items – drumstick, cranberries, potatoes, stuffing, corn and pie. Have the kids color and cut out their dinner items. When everything is colored, pass out a paper plate to each player. The game is a spin off of the Cootie game, but instead of building a bug, we are filling our plate. Assign each meal item with a number and each time a player rolls the die, he gets to put that item on his plate. Whoever fills their plate first is the winner. Diabetes Prevention is Kid Stuff, Too by Renee Haines

Preventing Type 2 diabetes is a battle that once only focused on adults. Now, kids are the focus of efforts to stop the disease before it begins, with lessons on healthier diets and the benefits of regular exercise at even young ages. “That’s why we’re moving downstream and working with 3- and 4-year-olds,” says Dr. Roberto Trevino, whose nonprofit Social and Health Research Center is expanding its 20-year reach from elementary, middle and high schools to preschool classrooms. Youngsters at Tynan Early Childhood Education Center, a part of the San Antonio Independent School District, are learning how to identify fruits and vegetables, and about healthy exercise. Because kids can start packing on pounds in later years, “it’s better to catch them lean,” Trevino says. Type 2 diabetes used to be called adult-onset diabetes because it was typically found in middle-aged and older adults. Now it’s being diagnosed more often in children. For example, at a medical meeting in Sweden in September, a Houston physician presented the case of a 3-year-old toddler he had diagnosed with having Type 2 diabetes. The case captured international media attention for being what is believed to be the youngest child diagnosed with the disease. A healthier diet and the diabetes drug metformin stopped the disease’s progress for the toddler within six months, and the doctor was able to stop treatments, he reported. by a lack of insulin and it can’t be prevented. Type 2 diabetes accounts for more than 90 percent of diabetes cases, and the medical community reports it can be prevented or delayed from progressing with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when a body produces too little insulin or develops insulin resistance. Both forms of diabetes can lead to a higher risk for heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and other adverse health conditions.

The parent factor

In San Antonio, Trevino says his nonprofit’s work with increasingly younger children is now headed beyond the classroom. “We learned that working with school projects is not enough. We really need to get out of the school and visit with parents,” he says. “Parents are a big factor.” In addition to making more fruits and vegetables available, Trevino is encouraging parents to lead family walks after dinner and at other times that add up to150 minutes a week. “This is not something we made up,” he says about the number. He said studies of people who exercised were compared to those given a pre-diabetes drug. Those who walked 150 minutes a week decreased their risk of pre-diabetes symptoms by 58 percent. Only 21 percent of those prescribed a drug alone showed a reduction in symptoms, he said. While the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes has been linked November 2015 | OurKidsMagazine.com 19

to have fewer public parks, less safe walking areas and smaller fresh produce sections at supermarkets. Nationwide, obesity among all groups has more than doubled in children ages 6-11 and more than quadrupled for those 12-19 in the past 30 years, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. With November officially National Diabetes Month in America, public awareness campaigns are now a family affair.

to Hispanic populations, “it’s more related to poverty than ethnicity,” Trevino says. States with the highest Type 2 diabetes rates are West Virginia (No. 1), Tennessee (No. 2) and Mississippi (No.3), he says. Hispanics make up only one percent of West Virginia’s population, about five percent of the population of Tennessee and only about three percent of Mississippi’s population. Poverty can make it harder to fight obesity and a lack of exercise that puts kids and grownups at risk of Type 2 diabetes, Trevino says, because poorer neighborhoods tend

Kids around the city are signing up at schools and parks for “Mud Runs,” a messy, but fun foot race program started by Fred Bailon and John Soto, two teachers at San Antonio’s Burke Elementary School, as a way to promote physical fitness. “You can find examples and tools on how to get healthier school meals or start a fun run or fitness program, and even sign petitions to urge major companies to market healthier food and drink options to young kids,” says Ramirez. “It’s all about helping parents take small steps toward big reductions in obesity.”

While healthy diets and plenty of exercise for kids and grownups can help prevent Type 2 diabetes, the upcoming holiday season can wreak havoc on the best intentions. Between that big Thanksgiving dinner and calorieladen treats at Christmas parties, how can families engage in holiday festivities without forfeiting all the fun? Dr. Amelie Ramirez, director of the San Antoniobased childhood obesity prevention network Salud America!, has a few sensible tips for kids and adults about how to avoid packing on pounds at this year’s holiday parties. “Fuel up with a healthy snack and drink lots of water before you leave,” advises the School of Medicine professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. “At the party, survey the landscape, skip fried foods and choose just one or two things to indulge in – with small portions,” Ramirez says. “Go for the foods you don’t eat every day, like tamales, and skip the ordinary rice, beans and chips. Drink plenty of water, and find a way to squeeze in a walk outside or dance to the party music.”

Babywearing dates back centuries and provided a simple solution to transport babies when traveling from tribe to tribe. The earliest proof of babywearing dates back to the 1200s in Europe, depicting St. Christopher carrying baby Jesus in a type of sling. Don’t be so surprised one of the first pictures of babywearing depicts a man carrying a child. Work needed to get done and both genders had to share in the babywearing duties. The trend continues today, offering millennial parents several style options to affix their babies either to their chest or back providing long-term comfort and choices in material. When it’s time to begin your search for baby carriers, the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance (BCIA) recommends checking that the products are compliant with U.S. standards and regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). According to the BCIA, the consumer is looking for three things in baby carriers: proper labeling, product registration and proof the product has been safety tested. Compliance is an important concern especially when shopping for baby products because many countries that manufacture baby items do not

“There are two main concerns about babywearing,” said Dr. Dionne Franco of Northeast Pediatric Associates located on Village Drive, “The first concern is suffocation; parents need to make sure the carrier is appropriate for the infant’s size, and that the head is well positioned. The baby should never be in an acute C-shape or face down. The second concern is hip development. It’s important the baby’s hips are in a frog-like position and not hanging down.”

What Parents Say One way to spot a trend is to see what other parents are wearing and learning about wearing their baby. Valerie Gutierrez is a psychology professor in San Antonio who recommends babywearing. “It sets a good foundation for their psychological health and helps with an infant’s emotional regulation and neurological development.” Valerie’s husband Michael is a fan of infant carrying and has been carrying their daughter Jacqueline since she was born. “Once I put her in a wrap, she slept better, and I feel closer to her.”

Resources to Know Babywearing International of San Antonio (BWISA) has 2,976 members and provides free babywearing education for all caregivers. Most Babywearing International (BWI) meetings are open to the general public. For members, dues are $30 annually and offer caregivers an opportunity to try on carriers and even rent them for up to a month. Krystal Fare is the president of the San Antonio chapter. She has been a certified babywearing educator since 2011, and is a mother of four. “Most caregivers need personal attention and proper education. Think of baby carriers like trying on jeans; you wouldn’t want to leave a store without

trying them on. Once you find the right fit, it’s magical. Remember, it’s not about the brand, it’s about the fit.” Classes at BWISA are held four times a month Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Evening and Sunday hours will be added soon to accommodate more caregivers and parents. The Center for Babywearing Studies also offers parents a training class on how to wear their carrier, along with educational and safety information if they would like to become certified. Go Baby Go is a San Antonio store specializing in babywearing and babywear instruction and demonstrations. Youth Leadership Program Expands to Include Coastal & Marine Resources for Texas Teens

The population of Texas is expected to grow to 30 million by 2020 with over 60% of the population located within 100 miles of the coast. The coast is an important part of the state as Texas has 367 miles of ocean front coastline, 3327 miles of coastal bay shoreline and 350 miles of barrier islands. Texans depend on coastal areas for recreation, seafood and wildlife habitat. In the summer of 2016, the 1st Battalion of the Coastal Brigade will be held in July at Sea Scout Base Camp Galveston. Those interested in attending must submit an application by March 15, 2016. It is a competitive application process and only 30 youth will be selected to participate. There will be eight camps to choose from in 2016: Buckskin Brigade (2 sessions), Bobwhite Brigade (2 sessions), Bass Brigade, Waterfowl Brigade, Ranch Brigade and the new Coastal Brigade. H-E-B Free Family Nights Are Back at the DoSeum

The DoSeum, formerly The San Antonio Children’s Museum, is welcoming back H-E-B Free Family Nights on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Free admission will be honored for the first 1,500 guests from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the designated nights. Free parking will also be available as capacity allows and signs will be set out to note when capacity has been reached. A reminder from the DoSeum that no outside food is allowed inside the facility and that limits on stroller use apply is included in the announcement. Kids Are Welcome at Downtown Tuesday

Parents can save some cash by taking advantage of the Downtown Tuesday initiative for free parking at city facilities and plenty of restaurant deals and special events. Bring the kids and head down to the heart of the city and take part in the effort to bring local citizens downtown for an evening. White Tiger Discovery Program Oct. 30 – Nov. 15 It’s a super-charged educational and entertaining exhibit with live white tigers! See the keepers feed adult white tigers and interact with them! They will conduct “Tiger Talks” to spark the conservation interest in these magnificent animals. Currently there are only about 60 Royal White Tigers on exhibit in zoo’s throughout the United States, and less than 400 in the world, and none left in the wild.

Dog Daze at the Maize Nov.6-8 We’re celebrating Man’s Best Friend during these two weekends in November. Gee — they never get to frolic in a corn maze! We feel sorry for them! So, on these weekends, folks who bring their doggies with them to the Maize will be admitted for 1/2 price … and the doggie is FREE! Must be on a leash and have nice manners!

Antique Tractor Pull and FREE Military Nov.6-8 It’s an annual event presented by the Tri-County Antique Tractor Pullers Association — loads of fun! Also, In Honor of Veteran’s Day, FREE admission for all current or former military service personnel and their dependents. A military ID must be presented at our admissions building upon arrival. Thank you for your service to our country!
