Say “Thank You“ Thanksgiving is a special time to be thankful for family, friends and everything else that we are so fortunate to have. To make this year’s a more meaningful and fulfilling Thanksgiving, perhaps try a few of the “44 Random Acts of Kindness” in Pam Molnar’s article “Make Our World a Better Place.” “Now, what do you say?” is a common phrase most parents use to teach kids good manners, but are they really feeling appreciation when they express a routine or prompted response of “Thank you”? This month, Ashley Talmadge’s article “It’s More Than Good Manners” breaks down ways to instill real gratitude in our children through teachable moments. Once Thanksgiving Day is over, the shopping frenzy for the following season of giving begins. Don’t let the pressure of finding that perfect gift take the “happy” out of your Holidays. The National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA) is back with their team of expert judges, parents, and testers with this year’s list of fantastic family gifts. (Starts on page 12.) So much to do during the Fall: Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights, Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live, and the Ford Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony are just a few events to look for this month. For more familyfriendly events, check out our calendar section. Happy Reading

Make Our World a Better Place: 44 Random Acts of Kindness By Pam Molnar

If you have ever experienced a random act of kindness, you know what joy a simple act can produce. This month, encourage your family to spread that kindness to the people who cross your paths during the holiday season and beyond.

Simple Enough for a Child 1. Collect stray carts outside the grocery store and put them back in the corrals. 2. Send a note of appreciation to a coach, teacher or neighbor. 3. Do a chore without being asked. 4. If you see something out of place at the store, put it back where it goes. 5. Start the day on the right foot. Smile and say good morning to everyone you see. 6. Bring in a neighbor’s garbage cans or mail on a cold day. 7. When you received prize tickets from arcade games, give them to someone else so they can get a bigger prize. 8

Our Kids Magazine | November 2016

8. Hand out a refreshing bottle of water to the mail carrier. Make Someone’s Day 1. Let someone ahead of you in line at the store. 2. Compliment someone on their hair, clothes, nail polish, or new car. 3. Ask a friend about their day and let them vent. 4. Give up a great parking spot to the person behind you. 5. Send a silly ecard to a friend and let them know you are thinking of them. 6. Give another parent a break. Offer to babysit while they catch up on sleep or shopping. 7. Write a hand written letter to an older family member. Show them that they are worth the time. 8. Share a word of encouragement with a parent who has her hands full. LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

9. If you have to run out to the store on a cold or rainy day, be sure to ask your neighbor if they need something. 10. Pull a shy partygoer into the conversation by asking her about herself.

Share the Wealth 1. Buy hot cocoa for the Salvation Army bell ringers. 2. Hand out $5 gift cards at the gas station, donut shop or fast food restaurant. 3. Tape coins to the machines at the Laundromat or hand out boxes of detergent. 4. Place singles on items at the dollar store – the toy aisle might be the best place. 5. Pay for the order of the person behind you in the drive up window, subway station or toll booth. 6. Purchase a buy one get one item and share it with a friend. 7. Leave a generous tip for a small bill. We have all worked for tips at one time in our lives. 8. Buy lunch for the service man working at your house. Pizza goes a long way when there is more than one. 9. If you have an extra ticket, give it to someone who is waiting in line. Do Something Together as a Family 1. Order a gift card for Red box and hand out codes to visitors along with a bag of popcorn. 2. Tape coins to the gum ball machines 3. Play board games with residents at the nursing home. Bring a plate of cookies with you. 4. Collect old towels and blankets for the animal shelter 5. Help someone load groceries into their car and take their cart back to the corral. 6. Make twice as much dinner as your family needs and give it to a neighbor – just because. 7. Attach coupons to items in the grocery store Help your fellow man 1. Leave a used book at the dentist office, coffee shop or auto repair waiting room 2. Give of yourself. Sign up to be an organ, bone marrow or blood donor. 3. Offer your seat to someone who needs it more on the bus, train or waiting area. 4. Say “Bless you” when a stranger sneezes. 5. If you find a stray dog with a collar, call him over so you can reunite him with his owner. 6. If a store or restaurant employee has been kind or helpful, be sure to tell their boss. 7. If you follow a blog, leave a comment and let them know why you enjoy their blog. 8. Leave a package of baby wipes in a public bathroom changing area. 9. Clean off a dirty park bench or swing if a bird has been there. Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. She is blessed to be on both the giving and receiving end of random acts of kindness.

It’s More Than Good Manners By Ashley Talmadge

At the restaurant a young girl fidgets in her chair. The server places a tall glass of milk in front of her. “What do you say?” reminds her mother. “Thank you,” responds the child dutifully. As parents, we often play a role in this scene. But what are we teaching? Ben Hall, father of nine-year-old Ella, asks, “Does the child feel thankful when she says ‘thank you’ after being reminded? I don’t think so.” Reflecting on his own childhood, Hall believes such an interaction merely “forces good behavior or manners.” He suggests real gratitude is “similar to appreciation and awareness,” something he and Ella’s mother are mindful of teaching their child. Experts suggest Hall is onto something. Certainly good manners are important. But true gratitude runs 10

Our Kids Magazine | November 2016

deeper and does more than foster civility. Several recent studies suggest that gratitude is the single best predictor of well-being. A child who feels and expresses gratitude for the people, experiences, and things in her life is more likely to demonstrate resilience, do well in school, and build lasting social connections. She is also less likely to suffer from depression or engage in antisocial behavior. But can gratitude be taught? Wendy Mather, social worker and former facilitator with The Virtues Project, believes a lot of the teaching amounts to good modeling. She says, parents “must cultivate the virtue of gratitude for themselves before they teach it to their children…It’s more than just writing ‘thank you’ cards. It’s the ability to convey our feelings of LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

appreciation and thanks out loud and silently for the good and not so good in life.” The language we choose communicates much. Occasional venting to one’s spouse can provide relief at the end of a tough week. But it shouldn’t be common fodder for conversation with our kids. Instead of describing the cashier as “crabby,” we can show empathy by saying, “She must not be having a very good day.” Or we can focus on the positive: “That woman behind us was so understanding when I couldn’t find my bank card. I really appreciated her patience.” As Mather says, “Model patience and understanding and optimism when it comes to dealing with trials and tribulations. Life’s challenges are our biggest teachers.” In addition to modeling, Mather encourages parents to “catch your child in the act of practicing gratitude,” and label it. During a snack you might say, “You are grateful for that juicy pear; I can tell by how much you smile as you eat it!” Or when your child becomes immersed in collecting stones at the creek rather than sticking to your scheduled hike, take time to notice her appreciation of nature’s offerings. Parenting can be all-encompassing. Busy moms and dads find it challenging to eat well, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. But according to Mather, such self care is important in our practice of gratitude. She says, “We tend to run on auto pilot when we feel run down, tired, and stressed. We can truly savor and

appreciate our riches, in whatever form…when we take care of ourselves.” Ben Hall believes “we teach gratitude in times of quiet reflection.” He echoes the need for breathing space, both as an individual and as a family. In today’s 24/7 whirlwind of technology-enhanced communication and entertainment, creating those islands of tranquility can be difficult. Yet, intentional transitions between the varied spheres of our lives—work, school, community, home—allow us to reflect on, learn from, and appreciate our experiences. Hall says a period of silence before a meal allows us to “consider the presence of the food, the cook, and the origin of the food.” Rather than an entitlement, the food becomes a blessing and a gift—one for which we are truly grateful. And the best part? Gratitude produces more of the same. A grateful person is more likely to reciprocate and to provide support to a third party, thus contributing to stronger familial and community bonds. As Mather says, “When we express appreciation we attract gratitude. It’s a language of love and connection.”

“1000 Parks and a Line in the Sky: Broadway, Avenue of the Future,” is a design vision by Antonio Petrov, UTSA assistant professor of architecture, and the “think/do-tank” he has established in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning. The exhibit features a 50-foot-long model of Broadway, a street that has the potential to become San Antonio’s great urban avenue. Recent developments on Broadway, such as the Museum Reach and the Pearl, and renewed interest in the street’s future have generated much discussion about what becoming an “urban” city actually means. In its present state, however, nearly fifty percent of Broadway’s urban landscape is flanked by parking space while nearly all spaces along the corridor are tied to businesses, leaving almost no public space for people to gather as citizens without being consumers. Petrov has conducted extensive research on Broadway and proposes a linear park system, comprised of unused interstitial spaces found along the street, and a skyride that connects the airport to Travis Park. Many residents and visitors to San Antonio remember experiencing the city from the sky between the 1960s and 1990s on the Brackenridge Park skyride. Inspired by this local history, he explores possible future directions for urban development, public parks, and alternative transportation systems using the Broadway corridor as a model. The interactive installation focuses on public input, while associated public events, roundtable discussions, photo collection events, and educational programming will bridge the past and future of Broadway to help the community imagine its new identity. Visitors are also able to experience a nostalgic moment by taking a seat in a gondola from the original Brackenridge skyride. Exhibit runs through April 16, 2017. Admission: $8 for adults (12-64); $7 for seniors (65+); $6 for children (3-11); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges identification. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Institute of Texan Cultures, UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd. 210458-2300. www.TexanCultures.com

Parlour Games: Ruloff Kip’s Toy Theatre is an exhibit for kids of all ages. While vacationing at his Long Island country home in the winter of 1919, Ruloff Kip created a toy theatre for his young daughter, Elizabeth. The large, elaborate theatre features moving mechanisms, several working lighting schemes, and an array of set drops and cut-out characters, based on Kip’s house and family members. Long thought to be the work of artist Everett Shinn, recent research has uncovered interesting new perspectives on the theatre itself, as well as the fascinating background of its true creator and his family. Exhibit runs through February 5, 2017. Admission: $10 for adults (12-64); $5 for seniors (65+), students with I.D. (13+), and active duty military; and free for children ages 12 and younger and to all museum members. Regular hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday; 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
