Fall is in the air and it’s likely your kiddos are Halloween and festival crazy— or will be soon. Between the costumes, the visions of unlimited candy floating through theirMagazine heads, and keeping fall festival schedules straight, it can be easy to feel a little overwhelmed as we enter the first phase of the “Holiday Season”. Not to worry! Check out our special Halloween & Fall Festival Round-Up section for an extensive list of what’s coming up locally this month. Also, don’t miss the Pumpkin Patch Guide if you are looking for a fun family outing –or just are on a Magazine hunt for the Great Pumpkin. For parents looking to turn that Halloween trick-or-treating outing into a learning experience, be sure to read Heidi Luedtke’s “Happy Hello-ween: Social Skills for Trick-or-Treaters”. Luedtke offers many suggestions on how best to use these interactions with unknown adults into social skills building interactions Magazine for your kids. There are also two great articles by Denise Yearian in this month’s edition. Both are also aimed at teaching your kids “life lessons.” Read Yearian’s article about the “Procrastinating Child” for information about why kids procrastinate and tips on how to motivate your child not to put off tasks for later. The article is loaded with good information and just might come in handy as we head into this extra-busy time of year. Also, be sure to have a look at Yearian’s 10 Tips to “Develop Leadership Skills in Children”. From voicing your values to being consistent, there is a lot parents can do to help kids gain leadership skills. It’s a quick read and definitely worth the time if this is a skill you want to encourage in your child. Finally, there is a lot more than just Halloween, Pumpkin Patches and Fall Festivals going on in October so be sure to read through our monthly calendar to get the scoop on what else is going on around town.

Happy Hello-ween: Social Skills for Trick-or-Treaters By Heidi Smith Luedtke, Ph.D.

Kids greet many unknown adults as they make the rounds trick-or-treating. Follow these tips to turn this year’s candy fest into a social-skills training session. Meeting new people doesn’t have to be scary. Go With a Group – Trick-or-treating with friends is safer and a whole lot more fun. Invite neighboring families to go door-to-door with yours, and host a low-key party afterwards. The kids can trade treats while you enjoy a little adult conversation. Speak Clearly – The “tr” sound can be troubling for small kids, who often say “Twick or Tweat!” Practice at home before the big day and encourage kids to enunciate both the t and the r sounds (say, “ter”). Reluctant public speakers may be more comfortable in a group, where their voices blend in to the din. Make Eye Contact – Looking others in the eye is a sign of respect and self-confidence. It’s also an important communication skill. Eye contact allows kids to show interest, see the other person’s reaction, and take turns in a conversation. Coach kids to look at the treat-giver’s eyes, not at their knees. If you’ll be handing out candy, bend down to make it easier for little kids to connect visually. Keep Your Distance –Trick-or-treaters often crowd up front hoping to score their favorite candies. Remind your child that pushing isn’t pleasant. Kids should allow ample personal space to avoid stepping on the Bride of Frankenstein’s dress or jabbing someone with their own costume props. Make Conversation – People often ask kids questions about their costumes, like, “What are you supposed to be?!” Prep your child to answer these queries. If she struggles to start conversations, coach her to ask about other kids’ costume choices. Complimenting a peer’s appearance is also a positive way to reach out. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

Trust Your Gut – Halloween is supposed to be spooky, and kids should tune in to their instincts. Don’t push your child to go into a neighbor’s haunted house or to reach into a coffin for candy, even if you know it’s safe. Reinforce the value of that little voice inside that says “Beware!” It’s okay to back away from frightening situations. Say “Thank You” – Kids may have more opportunities to practice gratitude on Halloween than on any other night of the year. Don’t let them move from one house to the next until they say “Thank You” loud and clear. Even the ugliest ghouls aren’t too foul for good manners. Heidi Smith Luedtke is a psychologist and mom who can’t wait to plunder a mini-sized Snickers bar from her oldest child’s Halloween booty. She is the author of Detachment Parenting. Procrastinating Child By Denise Morrison Yearian

Many parents grow weary of prodding their children to do homework, get ready for school or complete household chores. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Kids who procrastinate can break the habit if parents teach them the skills and self-discipline needed to start and complete tasks. “Anytime we talk about a child’s behavior we need to first look at his developmental level,” says Vicky Kelly, Psy. D., LCSW, specializing in child development. “Are the tasks he’s being asked to do within his developmental abilities to accomplish? If the answer is yes, the next step is to look at why the child is procrastinating.” Children procrastinate for a variety of reasons: lack of motivation, distractions, disorganization, feeling overwhelmed and fear of failure due to perfectionist tendencies. Once a root cause has been determined, parents can help their child make changes and thus break the procrastination habit. Wendy King did this. “Madeline has procrastinated with homework since she started elementary school,” says the mother of her 11-year-old. “Now that she’s in middle school, the workload has escalated and expectations have increased, and at times Madeline feels overwhelmed.” The main problem is long-term assignments. 14

Our Kids Magazine | October 2016

“Madeline will know about them but procrastinate doing the work until the last minute then rush to get it done,” King continues. “One thing she recently started doing was writing the assignments on index cards. That’s helped.” “If your child feels overwhelmed with a task, be proactive on the front end,” suggests Kelly. “Teach her to break down bigger projects into smaller, more manageable ones. Work out a plan, and if need be write it down. Then check on your child’s progress. In this way you are acting as her coach but still holding her accountable for the work.” Michelle Handlin recently took on the coaching role. “The biggest challenges I’ve had with Joey are getting him to pick up his toys, do his homework and get ready for bed,” says the mother of her 6-year-old. “This year I talked with his teacher about it and she suggested I break down whatever the task is, give him two or three specific directions, ask him repeat them and then report back to me when they were done. Once we started that, I saw a marked improvement.” Another thing that may help is a timer. “With young children you can make it into a game—‘Let’s see who can pick up the most toys before the timer goes off,’” says Rita Emmett, parent educator LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

EDUCATION DIRECTORY and author of The Procrastinating Child. “If your child has a short attention span, start with five or ten minutes. If he’s older, go longer. While the timer is ticking, tell your child to stay focused on that task and not get distracted. Then when the timer goes off, give him a short break and reward. If you need to, set the timer again.” With older kids, use discretion with a timer as it could elicit a power struggle. “When setting time limits give older children some control,” says Kelly. “If, for example, the trash needs to go to the curb, tell your child about it after school but give him until dark to get it outside.” Another way to motivate children to get a job done is to use teachable moments when they are feeling the natural consequences of their procrastination—being late for school, having to miss an activity or getting a poor test score. Then rather than chastising them, suggest and encourage use of tactics that could break the habit. One thing Handlin found helpful was to establish daily routines and offer incentives when tasks were completed. “We started a routine at the beginning of the school year where Joey had to get his homework done right after school,” she says. “He does complain, but he also knows once he’s finished he can go out and play. I also praise him in the process. If he gets his math problems done and they’re all right, I’ll say ‘You’re getting better and better at this!’ That always makes the work go faster.” King provides incentives too. “Whenever Madeline finishes an unpleasant task, I let her do something she enjoys. I’ll say, ‘If you complete this, you’ll get ten minutes more on the computer,’” she says. Most important, remember there is no one-size-fits-all technique when it comes to helping children break the procrastination habit. Discuss with your child what method works best for him and allow some trial and error until he settles into a routine. But remember building competency and responsibility takes time, and he may need to learn the skills and self-discipline to do it. “If your child doesn’t know how to break down jobs, organize information or stay on task, teach him. Then gradually up the level of expectation and let him become more independent while you provide coaching and encouragement,” says Emmett. “Whatever time you invest now will positively impact every area of your child’s life both now and in the future. The results will be a much richer, fuller life.” -Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren. Tips to Develop Leadership Skills in Children By Denise Morrison Yearian

Most parents want to raise their children to be future leaders who impact their community, nation and world. Although some leadership traits are innate, these qualities can be cultivated. Here are 10 tips to help:

1. Voice your values. Establish a value system in your home and instill virtues such as honesty and integrity early on as this is the backbone of quality leaders. 2. Ready with responsibilities. Teach your child to be responsible by delegating age-appropriate chores and increase expectations as they grow. This builds competence, confidence and independence, which are all essential leadership traits. 3. Provide a platform. Give your child a platform to voice his views. Exchange thoughts on what is happening in the news, on TV and at school so he knows his opinion counts. Also let him participate in some family decisions such as where to go on vacation or what to have for dinner.

EDUCATION DIRECTORY 4. Aim for activities. Academic and extracurricular activities build discipline and teach teamwork, interpersonal skills and accountability to others. They also provide an outlet for setting and achieving goals and stepping into leadership positions. 5. Go for the goal. Goal setting encourages children to take on challenges, teaches long-range planning and promotes self-confidence when goals are attained. Show your child how to set and achieve goals by breaking down larger tasks into smaller ones then celebrate successes along the way. If failure does occur, have your child look at the experience in light of the wisdom it produced: “What lesson can we take away from this so you can succeed next time?” 6. Build in bravery. Encourage your child to take a stand with regard to peer pressure and to venture out with challenges that move him beyond his comfort zone. Kids evolve in the process and emerge stronger when they face difficult situations head on. Stand on the sidelines and offer support and encouragement. 7. Encourage agent of change. Teach your child that she doesn’t have to sit idly by

when faced with situations that she has the power to change. Remind her that optimistic attitudes are often an inspiration and may prompt others to follow her lead.

8. Venture out with volunteering. Volunteering teaches servant leadership and civic responsibility. Once your child gets into the volunteer mindset it will become a natural part of his life. Take part in church or community volunteer work and bring him along. Encourage giving not only of his time but also a portion of his money. 9. Lead by example. Parents are powerful role models and teach by example how to lead. Share your goals, growth opportunities and the sacrifices and rewards you’ve experienced in becoming a leader. 10. Be consistent. Raising children to be quality leaders takes times and consistent effort. Continue to instill moral intelligence, encourage responsible behavior and provide opportunities for growth. In time, she will naturally step up and step out to lead others. -Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren.
