Get a Grip on Parental Tardiness this School Year By Denise Yearian

Parents who often find themselves scrambling to get out the door and arriving at their destination 10, 15, even 20 minutes late may want to explore the details of their delays. To cure chronic punctuality problems experts suggest parents consider the causes and implement strategies to address it. That’s what Susan Spartz did. Before having children, this mother of two was tenaciously on time for every event, activity and appointment. “I still subscribe to the theory that if something is worth going to it’s worth being on time. It just doesn’t always happen now because we’re on our kids’ schedules,” she says of her now 4 and 2 year-olds. “It started when my son was born. I’d load him into the car and before we could get on the road I’d have to stop, change his diaper and start the routine again. Just when I felt like I had a grip on our schedule my daughter was born.” “There are a number of things parents can do to help them stay on track with time,” says Penny Lawhorne, president of a local human resource consulting firm. “For starters, clock yourself. Be realistic about the amount of time it takes to get a task done or travel from one location to another.” And don’t forget to factor in the unforeseen. “This is a huge area where people fail to plan properly, and when you’re dealing with children it’s even more important,” 6

says parent educator and consultant Carol Brown. “Create buffers by leaving earlier than what you normally would. Plan for the unexpected such as traffic, car trouble and extra help or attention your child may need.” Spartz found this to be helpful. “From here to preschool it takes 15 minutes. That lets me know the absolute last minute I can leave the house and still make it on time,” she says. “What’s variable is how long it takes to get the kids dressed, go through potty routines and get seated in the car. I started off trying to get everyone out the door 15 minutes early but that didn’t work. So now we get ready 30 minutes beforehand. It sounds ridiculous but it works.”

Next make preparations. Set out clothes, books, keys, lunches and needed directions well in advance to avoid last-minute delays. This is where Melissa Dawson falls behind. “It will be time to go and I’ll find myself doing last-minute things like getting the baby’s diaper bag ready or putting together my son’s baseball uniform. Then we’re racing to get out the door,” says the mother of three. Also eliminate distractions and prioritize your to-do list. details such as picking up toys or loading the dishwasher until later. “This is an issue of multitasking, and if you’re not careful it can slow you down,” says Lawhorne. “Focus on your priority—getting out the door. If you can, delegate some responsibilities to your spouse and children.”

Next set an alarm. “If you’re not used to watching time or easily lose track of it, get a watch or cell phone that has an alarm on it—a kitchen timer works well too,” says Brown. “Set the alarm to go off several minutes before you have to leave as a reminder and to give yourself a margin of error.” Also carry a calendar with you to enter appointments and activities while you are away from home. Then when you return transfer them to a large family planner, if needed, to stay organized and help order the events of your day. Dawson does this but admits on occasion, over scheduling still occurs. “Just recently my child had two doctor appointments an hour-and-a-half apart,” she says. “I thought we had plenty of time between the two, but the first doctor was running late then there was traffic. We wound up getting to the second appointment right on time.”

If punctuality problems persist appoint an accountability person. “Recruit someone to be your time coach, at least at first,” says Lawhorne. “It’s helpful to have someone who can keep you on track when you’re trying to make or break a habit.”

Finally set goals and commit to change. “I’m a firm believer in writing down goals and creating an action plan because it increases the level of commitment,” says Lawhorne. “I call them S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time limited. Set a goal for being on time for events and activities the next month, create a plan for achieving it and then list the benefits and rewards you’ll realize as a result.” Perhaps the greatest reward will take root and remain with your children. “Parents are potent role models and one of the best lessons we can teach our kids is the importance of time management,” says Brown. “In doing so, we’ll send a lasting message that will permeate into their school, work and personal lives, both now and in the future.” Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and six grandchildren. More Fun For Everyone 5 Ways to Make Field Trips Even More Exciting By Cheryl Maguire

Who wants to go to a museum? If your family is like mine, you might get a mixed reaction to this question. One child may jump up and down shouting, “ME, ME” while the other child says, “okay” and another child says, “no thanks.” Visiting a museum, zoo or aquarium is a fun educational way to entertain your child. It can be challenging though if your children are different ages and interests. Once you get there, you may encounter long lines or crowds which can cause your kids to lose interest or become frustrated. One way to engage all of your children with different personalities and developmental levels is to play a game. Here are a few games that I have found helpful to use in museums, zoos, and aquariums:

Scavenger Hunts: A great way to involve all your kids at a destination to offer them a scavenger hunt. I first saw this used when I volunteered to go on my child’s school field trip to Plimoth Plantation. The teacher gave a scavenger hunt list to all the students. Even though I have visited Plimoth Plantation many times, I learned new things from participating in the 8

scavenger hunt and the kids loved it. It was a way for them to learn and have fun at the same time. To design your own scavenger hunt, before you visit the museum, zoo or aquarium, go to the website. Most websites have information you can use to create an appropriate scavenger hunt based on your child’s age and interests. Write a list of items your child needs to find while visiting the spot. For example, the Plimoth Plantation website has historical information and pictures. An item on the list could be as simple as “find a baby cradle.”

Passport Stamps: Everyone loves to get their passport stamped, right? I have seen this idea used at the Boston Harbor Islands and Disney World. My kids love getting a stamp and then they feel a sense of accomplishment when their book is filled with stamps at the end. Similar to creating the scavenger hunt, you can visit the places’ website before you visit. Create a passport book by stapling together some white pages of paper. FIELD TRIP DIRECTORY write either a place to visit such as, “see the lions at the zoo” or a challenge or questions such as, “Who is the mayor of the 17th Century Village in Plimoth Plantation?” When your child has completed the task on the page, give them a stamp (you can bring one with you).

Bingo:

My kids love playing Bingo and they have played it almost everywhere. This game is easy enough for young children to play and also entertaining for older children. By using the game at an educational location, you are helping your child to interact with their surroundings. Before you go to the site, create Bingo game boards for the whole family. Each square could be either a picture or a written word of something you plan to see during your visit. For example, if you are going to the aquarium you could have pictures (you could even print pictures from the website or online) of a shark, octopus and sea turtle. The first person to spot the shark marks off the square using a pencil with the shark in it. You win Bingo when you get 5 squares in a row.

ABC Game:

The ABC game is when you write down all the things you can think of that start with the letter A in one minute. If two people have the same word that word gets crossed

out. Whoever gets the most words wins. You then go on to the letter B and so on. This is a fun, easy game you can play anywhere, you only need some pens and paper (or you could use the note pad on your electronic device). You can play this game in the car if you are driving a long distance to the place you are visiting and try to think of topics related to the place for each letter. Or you could modify the game at the location by saying whoever sees something that starts with the letter A first wins one point and then continue to B, etc.

iSpy: Even though my twins are twelve-years-old they still like to play iSpy. And the great thing about this game is young children are able to play it as well. This is a fun waiting game, if there are long lines or if you have to wait to get into an exhibit. You can also play iSpy while you are at the museum, zoo or aquarium. New parenthood is rife with uncertainty. “As the mother of a newborn, I know from recent experience that every little thing can be challenging - from burping to changing diapers to breastfeeding and even trimming tiny nails, no matter if it’s your first or third child,” says family medicine physician Jenna Eschol, MD.

Gather information wisely.

In the midst of a perplexing dilemma, what parent hasn’t turned to Google or an online parent support group for quick answers? But, proceed with caution. “If it doesn’t seem like that online advice really fits your baby, maybe it really doesn’t. Talk to your pediatrician or at least a trusted relative who has seen the baby and knows the situation a little better than generic online advice,” says pediatrician Dr. Elizabeth Simpson.

Make it a date.

Don’t skip your newborn’s well-baby checkups. Your baby’s physician will asses their overall health and ensure 16

Newborns don’t understand schedules. Plan to sleep when your baby sleeps. “Babies are little rebels. They don’t follow rules,” Simpson says. “Babies are the schedulers and the parents are the people that get scheduled.”

Hungry?

Just as babies don’t care about clocks when it comes to sleep, they also eat on demand,anywhere between eight and 12 times in a 24-hour period. “Babies eat a lot during their first weeks thanks, in part, to their tiny tummy size, and the rapid physical and mental growth they experience in the first couple months of life,” Eschol says. If you’re breastfeeding, how do you know if your baby is eating enough? “If your baby seems happy and your pediatrician has assured you that weight gain is commensurate with the age, and enough dirty diapers are being produced (eight to 12 a day), then your baby is probably getting plenty to eat,” Eschol says. For a newborn, nothing is as comforting as mom or dad’s arms. “Babies have been held for the last nine months so they don’t understand having to lay in their own crib. They like to be held whenever they are awake,” Simpson says. In addition to skin-to-skin contact, talk and sing to your baby, and show her storybooks with high contrast colors like red, black and white.

Sleep safe.

While you should cradle your baby as much as possible, don’t fall asleep while holding him. “The number one thing that causes sudden infant death (SIDS) is unsafe sleep practices,” Simpson warns.

Without taking time for self-care, attending to your baby’s needs can become exceptionally challenging and overwhelming. “A good support system is essential for all moms and can include friends, families, counselors or support groups,” says Kelli Knapp, a board certified women’s health nurse practitioner. Sleep deprivation can exacerbate depression and anxiety. Sleep while your partner, a relative or a friend watches the baby. Or hire a nanny, baby nurse or postpartum doula. Taking breaks away from your baby, like a shower or a walk outside are also beneficial. “Even finding 10 to 15 minutes for yourself each day can improve your outlook,” Knapp says. Know that postpartum mood disorders are common and curable. Contact your healthcare provider if you are struggling. “A mom who admits she needs help is an amazingly strong woman and mom,” Knapp says. “Women who experience disorders during pregnancy or after a baby often feel like they are failing as a mom. A mom who reaches out for help is

David Rogers’ Big Bugs stand as tall as 25 feet and have wingspans up to 17 feet wide, and they are coming to the San Antonio Botanical Garden. David Rogers’ Big Bugs exhibition will be on display from Saturday, Aug. 31, through Sunday, Dec. 8. David Rogers’ Big Bugs exhibit includes 10 largerthan-life insect sculptures, all made from natural materials, positioned throughout the 38 acres of the Botanical Garden. The sculptures are created using various combinations of whole trees found standing or fallen dead, cut green saplings selectively harvested from the willow family, dry branches, and other forest materials. For the past 25 years, David Rogers’ Big Bugs exhibition has educated the public about the importance of preservation and conservation on the planet by introducing them to the world of insects, the role they play in the plant world, and their interconnectedness to our lives. Bugs outnumber humans one million to one. Many live in communal groups working as one for the common good of all. Their ranks include engineers, soldiers, weightlifters, weavers, hunters, stalkers, gatherers, and even royalty. When you take this remarkable and diverse group of hidden gardeners and recreate them on a gargantuan scale, you have David Rogers’ Big Bugs.
