How a Parent’s Affection Shapes a Child’s Happiness for Life By Sandi Schwartz
How often do you hug your children?
We all live busy, stressful lives and have endless concerns as parents, but it is clear that one of the most important things we need to do is to stop and give our kids a big loving squeeze. Research over the past decade highlights the link between affection in childhood and health and happiness in the future. According to Child Trends – the leading nonprofit research organization in the United States focused on improving the lives and prospects of children, youth, and their families – science supports the idea that warmth and affection expressed by parents to their children results in life-long positive outcomes for those children. Higher self-esteem, improved academic performance, better parent-child communication, and fewer psychological and behavior problems have been linked to this type of affection. On the other hand, children who do not have affectionate parents tend to have lower self-esteem and to feel more alienated, hostile, aggressive, and anti-social.
What The Science Says
There have been a number of recent studies that highlight the relationship between parental affection and children’s happiness and success. In 2010, researchers at Duke University Medical School found that babies with very affectionate and attentive mothers grow up to be happier, more resilient, and less anxious adults. Five hundred people were followed from when they were infants until they were in their 30s. When the babies were eight months old, psychologists 6
Our Kids Magazine | February 2020
observed their mothers’ interactions with them as they took several developmental tests. Then 30 years later, those same individuals were interviewed about their emotional health. The adults whose mothers showed “extravagant” or “caressing” affection were much less likely than the others to feel stressed and anxious. They were also less likely to report hostility, distressing social interactions, and psychosomatic symptoms. Researchers concluded that the hormone oxytocin may be responsible for this effect, as it is released when a person feels emotions related to love and connection. Next, a 2013 study from UCLA found that unconditional love and affection from a parent can make children emotionally happier and less anxious. This happens because their brain actually changes as a result of the affection. On the other hand, the negative impact of childhood abuse and lack of affection impacts children both mentally and physically. This can lead to all kinds of health and emotional problems throughout their lives. What’s really fascinating is that scientists think parental affection can actually protect individuals against the harmful effects of childhood stress. Then in 2015, a study out of the University of Notre Dame showed that children who receive affection from their parents were happier as adults. More than 600 adults were surveyed about how they were raised, including how much physical affection they had. The adults who reported receiving more affection in childhood displayed less depression and anxiety and were more compassionate overall. Those who reported less affection struggled FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
with mental health, tended to be more upset in social situations, and were less able to relate to other people’s perspectives. Researchers have also studied the benefits of skinto-skin contact for infants. This special interaction between mother and baby, in particular, helps calm babies so they cry less and sleep more. It has also been shown to boost brain development. According to an article in Scientific American, children who lived in a deprived environment like an orphanage had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those who lived with their parents. Scientists believe that the lack of physical contact in the orphanages is a major factor in these physical changes. Finally, numerous studies on the effects of massage show the positive benefits it offers to reduce anxiety in children. Massage is also a good way for parents to connect to their children, both physically and emotionally. Starting in infancy, a parent can begin to massage their child, which can create a strong bond. Studies have shown children and adults who receive massage experience less anxiety during academic stress, hospital stays, and other stressful events.
So, how can you bring more hugs into your family’s day?
From the moment you bring your baby home from the hospital, be sure to hold, touch, and rock them in your arms. Spend many precious moments caressing your baby so that their skin can touch your skin. As they get older, be playful by doing fun activities like dancing together or creating silly games like pretending to be a hugging or kissing monster. Set a reminder to make sure hugging is part of your daily routine. In the adorable Trolls movie, the Trolls wore watches with alarm clocks that would go off every hour for hug time. If that’s what it takes, then set yourself an alarm. Or make sure to give your kids a hug during certain times of the day, such as before they leave for school, when they get home from school, and before bedtime. Another interesting idea is to use affection while disciplining your child. As you talk to them about what they did wrong, put your hand on their shoulder and give them a hug at the end of the conversation to ensure them that, even if you are not pleased with their behavior, you still love them. If your children hit their sister or brother, hug them and explain how hugging feels better than hitting. Finally, be careful not to go overboard and smother your kids. Respect their individual comfort level, and be aware that this will change as they go through different stages. Sandi Schwartz is a freelance writer/blogger and mother of two. CAMP DIRECTORY
Which Camp Will Your Child Like? By Cheryl Maguire
When I was younger, I only had one choice for summer camp—the town camp. The town camp was a traditional all-day 6 hour camp with a heavy emphasis on sports. I was more of a bookworm than an athlete so this type of camp was not a good match for my personality. I remember coming home every day whinnying to my mom, “It was so hot and all we did was play (fill in a sport). Do I have to go to camp tomorrow?” By the end of the summer, I’m sure my mom wished there were other options for me. Now there are so many choices it can be overwhelming to figure out what type of camp would be a good fit for your child. Hopefully, the following descriptions will help you to match your child with the correct camp so you hear your child tell you, “Camp was so much fun today,” instead of what my poor mother dealt with daily.
Traditional Day Camp A traditional day camp is 6 hours (half day options may be available) and offers a variety of activities such as sports, swimming, art, and music. These camps are located at YMCAs, public schools, or private settings. Is this a good fit for your child? Most of the activities are outside so if your child loves the outdoors and playing sports or team building activities then this would be a good type of camp for them. Since there is a variety of activities this would also be a good fit for a child that likes to try different things. 8
Our Kids Magazine | February 2020
Sports Specialty sports camps usually are one sport such as baseball or soccer that the child plays either for 3 or 6 hours. Depending on where you live there may even be an option for tennis, golf, surfing or sailing camp. This type of camp is typically owned by private organizations. Some towns may have town operated sports camps. Is this a good fit for your child? If your child loves a specific sport and would like to improve their skills, this would be a great option. It could even be a way for your child to try a sport such a surfing that they might not otherwise have exposure to it.
Art/Musical Theater Specialty art or musical theater camps focus solely on the arts. Musical theater camps typically showcase a production such as “Beauty and the Beast,” whereas in an art camp a child would use a variety of art mediums like painting or drawing. These type of camps are located in public schools or private organizations. In the public school setting the drama teacher usually runs the camp, and it isn’t widely advertised but it is available for anyone to participate. To find out more information call public schools in your area.
Is this a good fit for your child? If your child is creative and prefers the indoors, then these FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
CAMP DIRECTORY types of camps would be worth looking into. It may be a good way to introduce the arts to your child since most of these camps are time-limited for one week.
and countries. There is also more time to do activities and foster independence compared to traditional day camps.
Educational
There are two types of travel camps. One type is when your child goes on day trips and the other type sometimes referred to as “teen tours” is when your child travels with a group for an extended period (usually a few weeks or a month). This type of camp is located at religious or private organizations.
An educational camp focuses on learning a new skill or subject matter. Since it is camp and not school these types of camps tend to be hands-on with an emphasis on fun. These camps are located at public schools, museums, and colleges. Is this a good fit for your child? If your child is curious and always asking questions about how/why things work, this may be a good match for them. If a child is interested in learning a new skill such as commuter programming or speaking Spanish some educational camps offer that as well.
Sleepaway Overnight camp is when your child lives at the camp for either a week or longer period. There are Boy/Girl Scout camps and private residential camps. These camps tend to offer options such as sailing, boating, archery, horseback riding and other activities that may not be available close to your home. Is this a good fit for your child? An overnight camp gives your child the chance to meet other kids from different states
Travel
Is this a good fit for your child? Some of these camps travel to places by plane so it would give your child the chance to travel to a place that you might not have gone to as a family. If your child enjoys experiencing new destinations, then this would be a great fit for them.
How Can I Find These Camps? A good place to start is asking friends and family where they sent their child to camp and if it was a positive experience for them. You could then call your local public school and ask about local camp programs. Private camps usually offer an open house during the year to allow your child to visit before signing up. 7 Reasons Parents Should Consider Sending Their Child to Camp With summer calendars quickly filling up, it can be hard to try and squeeze in one more thing. But if you have never sent your kids to a summer camp, here are seven reasons why you should consider it!
With so many options, it’s easy to find a great fit for your child.
From sports camps and art camps to STEM-based camps and more traditional overnight options, summer camps are designed to serve a variety of ages and interests. The length of camp can range from a few mornings for younger kiddos to weeklong sleep-away camps for older kids. Local churches, school districts, and other organizations like the YMCA, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Camp Fire, and 4-H offer a wide range of camps. With a little bit of research, you can easily find a camp well-suited for your child.
Camps provide kids with experiences they might not have access to in “everyday” life. Horseback riding. Paddling a canoe across the lake. Wilderness survival. Conquering a ropes course. Sleeping under the stars. Adventures are endless at camp, and your child will have an opportunity to try something brand new. For the youngest campers, trying a new craft activity or learning a new camp song can be so much fun!

CAMP DIRECTORY Camps are a safe place to practice social skills.
It might be awkward or uncomfortable for your child during those first few hours of camp when they don’t know a single soul. After all, stepping into a new social environment can be challenging. But the ability to comfortably communicate with new people is a life skill that all kids need, and a camp is a great place to practice! Camps also provide kids an opportunity to form friendships with a whole new group of peers they might never have met otherwise.
Camps give kids a much-needed technology break. No matter how old your child is, they could probably benefit from a screen hiatus, especially during the summer months. Spending time outdoors, learning a new skill, having fun, and forming new friendships is good for the body and soul!
Sending kids to camp is beneficial for you, too.
Driving away from your child(ren) on the first day might be a little gut-wrenching. But entrusting your kids to someone else for a while can be truly beneficial. Maybe it will free up time for some overdue self-care, or give you and
your partner time to reconnect. Maybe it will provide an opportunity to hit the reset button with your tween or teen. After all, absence makes the heart grow fonder! Parenting is tough work, so don’t feel guilty if you enjoy this time to yourself. Chances are, your kids are having a blast without you!
Your child’s experience as a camper could help land a summer job in the future. Camps are staffed by amazing counselors who provide kids with all kinds of good, clean fun. Most of these counselors were campers once, too. Now they get to help a new set of youngsters make unforgettable summer memories, all while sharpening their own teamwork and leadership skills. Your child might have that same opportunity one day. What great way to spend a summer!
Camp is just plain fun.
So many adults have fond memories from their days spent at camp, and kids who have been to camp often say it’s a favorite part of their summer. Odds are, your kids are going to love it! And for that reason alone, it’s worth sending them to camp. Mary Ann Blair is a mom of two boisterous boys. PARTY DIRECTORY
Birthdays are Special By Tania Cowling
Your child’s birthday is just around the corner, and you and your family are having fun planning the big party. That is, until you check the calendar and realize on what day of the week your child’s birthday falls. Don’t fret if it’s in the middle of the week, parties can’t always be scheduled on your child’s exact birthday. Here are a few ideas for you and your family to make the actual day special and unique.
KEEP THE “BIRTH” IN BIRTHDAY: How many of us tell our children how glad we are that they were born? Here are some ways to let our kids know how special they are to us: Pull out the baby pictures and reminisce about all the cute things your child did. Tell favorite stories about family moments. Create a list of all the things you like about your child. Read the list at the dinner table. Let your child plan the menu for dinner on his or her birthday each year. Keep a record of the meals and as the years go by you can talk about how your child’s tastes have changed from birthday to birthday. Let your child pick out the birthday cake. Take a
picture of the cake and save these from year to year to reminisce. Start a scrapbook on birthday fun. For younger children, create a special hat or badge to wear on their birthday. Artistically made by Mom or Dad! Make and give your child “coupons” that allow them special opportunities such as a movie date with Mom or an ice cream date with Dad.
CONDUCT A BIRTHDAY INTERVIEW: We appreciate the memories that make our families unique. They are the instant replay of shared times together and of times that give us a sense of belonging. Every year when one of my children’s birthdays comes around, I conduct a mini interview on audiotape. I ask questions like, “What would you like to be when you grow up?” and “Tell me about our family.” You can also ask your children to tell you about school, vacations, and other significant events. Date and save these interviews from year to year. My kids think their responses from younger years are hilarious. As a variation, use a camcorder and videotape the interview—a picture is worth a thousand words. February 2020 | OurKidsMagazine.com

AT THE DINNER TABLE:
Mealtimes are the perfect time to capitalize on family camaraderie. Here are a couple ideas to make a birthday dinner special: Put disposable cameras on the table for everyone to take candid shots at the family birthday dinner. Use plain white butcher paper for the tablecloth and set out cups of crayons. Make pictures and doodles that are special to your child. Save the drawings if they’re not soiled. On your child’s birthday, serve foods in the same quantity as your child’s new age. For example, if your child just turned five, serve five apple slices, five cheese chunks, and five carrot sticks. Do a little singing together after your meal. Do you know these songs? Skid-a-ma-rink, I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, Bingo, On Top of Old Smokey. Or sing any songs you and your kids like.
BIRTH YEAR COINS:
Look through your pocket change and find coins dated with the year of your child’s birth. Glue the coins to a piece of felt to make a mini-banner. Display the banner—with new coins added yearly—on your child’s birthday.
FAVORITE FOOTSTEPS:
Using construction paper cut out several pairs of footprints (tracing around a shoe makes a good pattern). During the day (or night before) tape these to the floor. When you’re ready for the birthday present, have your youngster follow the footprints to where the gift is hidden. Tracking in and out of several rooms is really fun. No matter when or how your child celebrates a birthday—whether it be alone with your family or in a big birthday bash—what she will enjoy and remember most are your gifts of love, time, and attention. Baby
Child Equipment Safety for Your Baby, Toddler, & Preschooler By Kimberly Blaker
Regardless of your approach to parenting, one thing all parents can agree on is child safety. It seems like new recalls on child equipment, and news of another young child injured by equipment occur each week. Parenting can be stressful enough without having to worry about the equipment you use every day with your baby, toddler, or preschooler. To alleviate stress and ensure your child is safe and secure, keep the following in mind when buying and using child equipment.
Car Seats
One situation parents worry about is driving with their baby or child on board. There’s a good reason for this. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents are one of the leading causes of death for young children. As the NHTSA points out, car seats offer your child the best protection in the event of an accident. So it’s essential you have the right equipment and use it correctly. Avoid buying second hand if possible because a used car seat may not be within its expiration date, and you can’t be sure it hasn’t been in an accident. Both of these factors are critical to your child’s safety in the event of a crash. Also, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation as well as the height and weight limits. The following are the four main types of car seats and how to use them. ■■Rear-facing – Babies and toddlers should face the rear as long as possible until they outgrow the height or weight limits specified on the car seat. ■■Forward Facing - Once children outgrow a rear-facing seat, they should stay in a forward-facing seat until they exceed the height or weight limit stated on it. ■■Booster - Older children who can use a seat belt, but need to sit higher for the seatbelt to fit correctly should use a booster car seat. ■■Seat belt - Once kids are tall enough to sit on the seat with the seat belt in a safe position, a car seat is no longer required. In any of these seats, check that the clips or seat belt are 18
in the right place every time. Clips should be clasped at the armpit level. Seatbelts should lie across your child’s lap with the top across the chest and shoulder (not across the neck or face).
Cribs Babies and toddlers spend at least half their day sleeping, often in a crib. So crib safety is vital. Adhere to the following to keep your child safe. Don’t use a crib with drop-down sides. These were banned as of June 2011 for safety reasons. So if buying a previously used crib, check for this feature if you’re not sure when it was made. When buying second hand, also make sure there are no missing parts or issues with the paint, splintering, or loose connections. When your child is in their crib, follow age-based recommendations to avoid SIDS. Babies should be placed on their backs, and mattresses should be flat and firm with a tightfitting sheet. There should be nothing loose in the crib, such as a blanket, pillow, or stuffed toys. Also, make sure no cords or strings are anywhere near the crib, which increases the risk of strangulation. Be aware of heavy art or decorations over the crib as well that could fall. One of the most significant hazards with cribs as your child grows is the risk of falling. Ensure the mattress height is appropriate so your child can’t roll or climb out. When your toddler can climb out, the crib is no longer suitable or safe. So it’s time to change your child’s sleeping arrangement.
Changing Table As babies grow and can roll around, sit up, stand, or play around, it’s more challenging to change their diaper. A safe changing table is essential to keep your baby secure and reduce the risk of falls. The table should have a guardrail at least two inches high around it, and the changing pad should have raised sides to prevent easy rolling. A strap with a buckle is recommended to keep your baby secure. But don’t rely on it solely. Also, keep all diaper supplies within reach under the changing table, so you never have to leave your baby’s side.

Like any equipment, make sure the changing table is put together correctly and sturdy and be aware of the manufacturer’s recommended weight limits.
Swings & Rockers Swings and rockers can help soothe a fussy or sleepy baby, especially if they have issues with laying flat like reflux or need a soothing motion to calm them. Swings and rockers are also a handy place to entertain babies while you get things done. But only put a baby in a swing when you’re able to see and be aware of your baby. This type of baby equipment has had many recalls. Some rockers and swings are advertised for sleep and to help with naps. But according to manufacturers and organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and US Consumer Product Safety Commission, swings and rockers aren’t safe for sleeping without supervision. The safest way for babies to sleep is flat on their back. This type of equipment puts a baby’s head and neck at an angle, which can negatively impact their breathing. Discontinue the use of swings and rockers when your baby can sit up or roll. Also, always follow the recommended weight and height limits.
Strollers Strollers are a useful way to transport children. But anything on wheels carries risk. It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s stated weight limit and use strollers according to their directions. Use only jogging style strollers for running or faster activity. Also, make sure your stroller is set up correctly, and re-tighten bolts and other parts occasionally as well. Check tire alignment and inflation levels regularly, if applicable. If using a car seat with the stroller, only use car seats that are made to go with your specific stroller. Then make sure the seats are correctly installed and securely clicked before using. Never leave your child unattended in a stroller, and always buckle them in correctly. Allow only one child per seat and make sure they’re sitting down at all times (unless the stroller has an area designed specifically for standing). When not in motion, use the stroller locks to prevent it from rolling away. Many strollers, particularly jogging strollers, have a wrist strap you should wear in case the stroller does start to move for any reason. It isn’t possible to eliminate all potential risks to children. So the best way to keep children safe is for an adult to be present and aware when equipment is in use. Be sure to check regularly for product recalls. New purchases should come with postcard forms to send back to the company for alerts of any recalls with the product. Also, periodically check equipment to make sure it’s in good shape, and don’t leave young children unsupervised. Kimberly Blaker is a freelance parenting and lifestyle writer.
