Publisher’s NOTE
Good Luck! Have you ever had one of those days when everything seems to be going wrong? I know I have. Normally I attribute it to being in the wrong place at the wrong time or, to put it simply, “Bad Luck.” This March, try making your own good fortune! Try turning things around with tips in Heidi Smith Luedtke’s article “Lucky You”. March is not only about wearing green, looking for four-leafed clovers and trying to gain the luck of the Irish, it’s also our second camp issue of the year. In this month’s camp guide, Christina Katz breaks down the factors when looking for a Spring Break or Summer day camp for your child. There are plenty of camps to choose from and if you have a kiddo who isn’t into sports you must read Sarah Lyons article “Not so Sporty: Keeping Kids Active When They Avoid Team Sports.” “Do you want to play with me?” ”Can I go out and play?” These are questions parents often hear from their little ones. Play is crucial for all children so they can develop their communication skills. This is no different for children with disabilities, only it’s just a little more challenging. For playdate tips for kids with special needs, check out Sarah Lyons’s article “A Special Play Time.” Are you looking for things to do this spring break? Check out our calendar for the best family-friendly events this month. Here are a few events to watch for in March: Our Kids Magazine 22nd Annual Camp Fair, Monarch Fest, Fest of Tails and The 35th Festival of India.

Lucky You! 10 Tips for Making Your Own Good Fortune By Heidi Smith Luedtke, PhD
Sometimes it feels like the universe is against you. The baby isn’t sleeping. You didn’t get the promotion at work. Car repairs cost more than the estimate. Then the water heater exploded, flooding your basement again. If a string of bad luck has you singing the blues, it’s time to change your tune. Studies show you can make more good fortune for yourself. Here are ten ways to get luckier.
Quiet down.
Tap into your intuition by spending time alone. Write in a journal. Make a dream board or collage. Putter in the garden. Meditate. Lucky people are in touch with their own feelings. Break free from distractions that clutter your mental landscape for a few minutes each day. The path ahead will be much clearer.
Trust yourself.
Research shows that your brain sees subtle, complex patterns you can’t explain in words. And those unspoken insights can help you make better decisions. Lucky people act on these instincts. Don’t ignore a hunch or silence your internal alarms just because you can’t explain them. You’re smarter than you think. Go with your gut.
Take it all in.
Good fortune may be serendipitous. But you have to be open to it. Having a laser-like focus on a specific goal or long 6
Our Kids Magazine | March 2018
to-do list narrows your view. Lucky people find unforeseen windfalls because they explore the scenery instead of sticking strictly to the map. You might find a gorgeous handbag on sale while you browse the mall at lunch or score free theater tickets because you overhead a coworker say she can’t use them. Tune in to your surroundings.
Accept risks. Lottery millionaires will tell you: You can’t win if you don’t play. Jackpots aside, there is a larger truth in this. “There are many valid risks in life and we need to be mindful of them. But dwelling on risks can keep us from seeing opportunity,” cautions life coach Margie Warrell, best-selling author of Find Your Courage (McGraw Hill, 2008) and Stop Playing Safe (Wiley Press, forthcoming in March, 2013). Push yourself outside your comfort zone. Share your ideas with the boss. Ask for what you really want. Commit to a lofty goal. The biggest risks often yield the biggest rewards.
Expect success. Your beliefs about the future have a way of making it happen. Psychologists call this a self-fulfilling prophecy. “Optimism fuels bravery,” Warrell says. It allows us to act boldly in the face of fear or uncertainty, without worrying about whether we’ll look foolish. Don’t wait to feel brave before you take action. Confidence grows when you put yourself out there. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
Smile. Lucky people have lots of friends and they make connections in surprising places, like the line at the grocery store. Put on a happy face. Make eye contact. Stand up straight, with arms relaxed, not crossed in front of you. Strong, open postures invite interaction. Be brave and initiate conversation. Listen for points of connection and pursue them.
Reach out. You don’t have to be in all the right places at all the right times if you’re well-connected. Lucky people talk about their goals and accept help from others. You might mention you’re interested in going to cooking school only to learn that your friend’s aunt is a trained chef. Soon, she’s giving you admissions advice. Make a little noise about your ambitions. The universe is listening.

Stay positive. One person’s bitter disappointment is another person’s golden opportunity. You can’t make your own good fortune if you are focused on what’s wrong with the world or with yourself. “By being optimistic we can find opportunity in adversity and take actions that our pessimistic friends wouldn’t bother to take. In turn we create new opportunities for ourselves,” says Warrell. Always look at possibilities through a positive lens.
Try again. Lucky people aren’t lucky all the time. But they don’t let unhappy outcomes mess with their mojo. “Lucky people’s high expectations motivate them to persist,” even when they don’t succeed, says psychologist Richard Wiseman, Ph.D., author of The Luck Factor (Miramax, 2003). Lucky people choose more challenging puzzles and they continue to work on them long after unlucky people give up. When you experience setbacks, change your strategy and keep moving forward. Good things come to those who don’t quit.
Be grateful. Who feels luckier: the athlete who won the silver medal or the athlete who won the bronze? That’s right. The third-place finisher feels luckier because she knows she might have come in fourth. The silver-medal winner is focused on missing out on gold. No matter how bad you think you have it, someone has it worse. Celebrate big wins and small victories. They’re all good. CAMP GUIDE
Local Day Camps & Summer Activities By Christina Katz
Sleep-away camp can be an exciting, empowering adventure for kids who are mature enough to handle the expectations. However, overnight camp may not be a perfect fit for your family this year and there is no shame in that. If you are waiting for the right time for overnight camp, why not take a more customized approach to summer fun and meet the needs of kids locally? Chances are good you can find day camps, classes, workshops and activities in your area that will keep smiles on your kids’ faces all summer long. The reason we don’t send our daughter away in the summer is because it would be challenging to find a camp that would meet all of her needs in one experience. We can better satisfy all of her interests and save money by making the most of learning opportunities in our area. True, we juggle a variety of schedules and put in some extra driving time, but the activities she chooses compliment each other nicely and she always comes home after each one smiling. We also make sure 8

to take a few weeks off at the end of summer to rest, relax, and regroup before school starts back up again. When it comes to stringing together local experiences, imagine the beads that would go on a charm bracelet for each of your kids. Which beads best represent your child’s interests? A soccer ball, a book and pair of hiking boots? Or perhaps a fairy wand, ballet slippers and a teacup? No matter what the collection of interests, gather up some regional guides, hop online, and ask friends what they have planned for their kids. You are going on a summer activity hunt and you don’t want to miss out on any of your options. Who says summer can’t be just as educational and fun as school? Customizing a vacation schedule for each child in the family is an eye-opening adventure in and of itself. If you want a peaceful, happy summer, help your kids stretch their wings beyond the usual, school-year routine. Transform your kids’ summer into weeks of

Ink Year-round Commitments.
Don’t Overlook Summer School.
You may already have school-year activities that extend into summer like scouting or 4-H. Be sure to get these commitments on your child’s schedule first, so you don’t inadvertently overbook. If your child participates in a sport or another competitive activity, training camps may be required during summer. These can be enriching because kids who train over the summer often rejoin their teams playing at a higher level than the prior season.
Ask For Referrals. Chances are good that parents who have lived in your area for several years have the scoop on the best day camps and summer programs. Poll your friends individually or post a question on social media to gather information. Specify each child’s interests to draw the most relevant recommendations, then hand pick a summer plan to delight each child. Don’t send the fun-loving child who longs for improv classes to the same activities as the serious sibling who adores long games of chess. They can swap adventures on the
Generally speaking, if your child needs a leg-up on academics during the school year, summer school is a smart choice. Since the summer before high school, we have signed our daughter up to take a wellness course in the summer. Getting a jump on pre-requisites allows her to take an extra art elective during the school year, which provides a welcome break during an intense school day. Ask your child’s school counselor if taking summer school courses might benefit your child’s schedule next year. Some districts allow online learning or swapping summer athletic training to fulfill physical education requirements.
Check Local Resources. Schools, libraries, and community centers are great resources for summer activities. Be sure to track down any printed or online guides they may offer. Also check towns near where you live to see if they offer programs that may interest your child. By driving one town over, we found a community theater production our daughter can participate in inexpensively each summer. Now that’s worth a ten-minute drive.

CAMP GUIDE Consider Your Child’s Needs. Sometimes a kid-centric focus is part of an activity’s allure. But if you know your child flourishes in a structured environment with adult leadership, trust your instincts. Be mindful of how much structure and supervision each offering includes. Some kids are more self-motivated than others. Consider scaffolding more leadership into your child’s summer experiences over time. If your child is reticent about trying new activities, see if school friends would like to try a new activity together. Kids of working parents often appreciate an opportunity to participate in summer programming, if you can pick up most of the driving.
Don’t Overlook A Summer Reading Challenge. If your child has a busy summer schedule, you might be concerned about enough down time. Signing your child up for a summer reading challenge at the beginning of summer is a great way to build downtime into any schedule. On busy days, reading will provide a welcome reprieve from social activity. And on lazy days, having a daily book-reading commitment can get an unscheduled day off to a good start.
FU Go Your Own Way.
Sometimes you want your child to benefit from the experience of trying a new experience without school friends. So go ahead and enroll in activities where enthusiasm for the topic will trump any first-day butterflies. Do not cave to peer pressure if all of the other kids are doing an activity that is not a good match for your child. If the program focus isn’t a good fit, the experience isn’t going to be enriching no matter how many friends are in attendance. Make timely, age-appropriate choices for your children, and when religion is an activity focus, make sure it fits with your family’s values.
Budget For Sleep-away Camp.
All of these activity adventures with new people are great preparation for sleep-away camp in the future, if you are considering it. Start a conversation with your child about the possibility of sleep-away camp down the road to gage interest. Consider opening a savings account for overnight camp and putting away a little money each month for the future. Encourage your child to pitch in and help save money with you. Then, when the allure of overnight camp strikes-and it likely will-you’ll have buy-in from your child and the flexibility to choose the best possible camp to suit his or her interests.

Keeping Kids Active When They Avoid Team Sports By Sarah Lyons
Team sports are a great way to keep kids active but not all kids enjoy playing them. When kids avoid team sports, parents look for other ways their children can continue to be healthy and active. How can you get your kids moving around when they aren’t part of a sports team?
Encourage lifelong activities
Choose activities that have the potential for lifelong enjoyment such as biking, swimming, walking, and hiking. These activities are great because while they can be done individually, for a lifetime, they also can be enjoyed as a family. Encourage everyone to go on a walk or bike ride together, hike in a local park, or spend the day at the pool. Get a step counter for each family member and create a friendly competition to see who can get the most steps.
Go outside
Simply getting your kids outside can be a great way to sneak in exercise. Visit a local park, encourage them to climb trees, swing, or play tag. Have your child go on a “treasure hunt” in the backyard and collect items that interest them like sticks, rocks, flowers, or leaves. Catching fireflies in the summer, building a snowman in the winter, or raking leaves in the fall all help kids to be active while not playing a sport.
Individual sports
Just because your child does not enjoy team sports does not mean they may not enjoy an individual sport. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

CAMP GUIDE Gymnastics, swimming, track and field, wrestling, diving, archery, golf, or weight lifting are all good examples of individual sports where children compete against themselves.
Limit screen time When screen time is allowed, try to encourage them to move while they are watching television. If a song comes on, get up and dance or march along. If they are playing video games, encourage games that involve movement. If the child is sedentary while enjoying screen time, ask them to complete some sort of activity like chores or outdoor play before they turn the television or tablet on.
Set an example Children learn by example. If the parent has a low activity level the child will most likely see exercise as a low priority. Lead by example and get moving. Begin an exercise routine or a hobby that includes movement, like gardening, and invite your child to join you. Make the most of the time together.
TexasAdventureCamp.net
Dance and theater Turn on the music and have a family dance party. There is nothing like a great song to get a body moving. Dancing is fun and it’s great exercise too. Some children may also enjoy trying dance classes, baton twirling, or cheerleading. All of these are a great source of exercise. If your child is drawn to music and theater get them involved in a theater production in school or your community.
Find a new hobby Encourage your child to find a hobby that encourages movement and activity such as skateboarding, fishing, bowling, and woodworking. If the child is doing something they enjoy they won’t even notice they are also exercising.

Leisure sports can be more fun for kids that don’t care for team sports because they are less competitive and therefore have less pressure to perform at a higher level. Encouraging kids to play gets them active. Playing frisbee or frisbee golf, tag, catch, shooting hoops, and duck duck goose all require kids to run around. They will be having so much fun they won’t notice they are exercising.

Chores are a great way to get kids active and teach them the value of hard work at the same time. Ask your child to clean their room, vacuum, mow the lawn, or sweep. Consider paying them an allowance for more motivation. While team sports have many benefits, they are not for everyone. Kids who do not enjoy team sports don’t have to be less active. With these tips, kids will enjoy an active lifestyle that can be maintained for a lifetime. Sarah Lyons is a wife and stay at home mom to six children, including 2 year old triplets. Students will become part of a community as they participate in whole-group activities and attend three small-group sessions of their choice. The whole-group sessions occur daily and include team-building games, and other fun problem-solving activities. The different small group sessions vary in length and are designed to appeal to students’ wide-ranging interests, allowing them to immerse themselves in an area they love and to try something new. A Special Play Time Tips for Playdates with Special Needs Kids By Sarah Lyons
Playdates are an important part of childhood. They offer time for kids to interact socially without the structure of school or extracurricular activities. They also help kids learn to share, socialize, and play freely while still having support from their parents as needed. Kids with special needs are no exception and benefit from playdates as much as their peers. While they may take a little more planning and patience, it is well worth the efforts for everyone involved. Here are some tips for hosting a playdate with kids with disabilities.
Be open
Our natural reaction may be to avoid talking about any disabilities a child may have but it is better to address any questions or concerns beforehand so everyone is more comfortable and knows what to expect. “I am upfront and honest about my daughter before we go to anyone’s house for a playdate.” says Barb Walker-Shapiro, mom of six from Omaha, NE. “Her brain doesn’t work like other kids. She may have a seizure and is prone to major meltdowns. I find that when other parents know what’s ‘wrong’ with my daughter, they are more tolerant and compassionate towards her.” It is also a good idea to talk to your children openly about differences they may have with their friends. Explain that just because others may seem different or express their joy differently, it doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy playdates or making new friends as well. Prior to the playdate, it is also a 20

good idea to check in with the other parents about whether there are any food allergies or restrictions and anything important you should know.
Be strategic
Prior to the playdate, discuss with the other parents about what would be the best location to have the playdate. For some, their own home is more comfortable and successful. For others, staying at home may encourage the special needs child to say hello then retreat to their room while company visits. In this case, it may be better to go to a public place that everyone can enjoy, such as a park, museum, or zoo. On the other hand, parents who have a child that is prone to running away or hiding may find a public place overwhelming. Discuss your plans with all the parents involved and come up with the best solution for everyone. Another great strategy is to plan activities that unite the kids. Kids who struggle with talking to peers or sharing toys may find that a common interest helps them feel more at ease. Find out the interests of the kids you are hosting and offer an activity around one that excites all of those invited. Ideas could include a craft, a game, or visiting somewhere that fosters that interest. For example, if they are interested in nature, visit the Overland Park Arboretum or go on a backyard scavenger hunt. If they are interested in tractors and farm animals, visit a farm, such as Deanna Rose. FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210
Be patient Whenever kids are involved, patience is important. Try to understand that kids may have different reactions to situations, things may not go exactly as expected, and that it may take some time for kids with special needs to warm up to the situation. Some children with special needs may prefer to participate in parallel play. Parallel play is when kids play beside each other, but do not interact with one another. Children who play alone during parallel play still enjoy the time together and are usually interested in what the other children are doing. If things do not go as planned, it is okay to cut the playdate short and try again in the future.
Be inclusive It is most important to note that kids with disabilities or special needs are just like anyone else; they want to interact with friends and be loved and appreciated. When hosting a play date with kids with disabilities it’s important to greet them and interact with them as you would anyone else you meet. “Please say hi to my son. Smile at him, even if he doesn’t smile back.” says Marie Taylor, mother of two. Even if the child is nonverbal or doesn’t seem to hear you, it is important to speak to them. Angela Leever, special education teacher and mother of three says “Encourage the parents and children to speak to the child with special needs, not about them. If the child with special needs does something your child isn’t happy with or that isn’t appropriate, allow them to use words to tell them. Sometimes that is more powerful than the adults intervening.”
Be understanding Parenting is not easy and we all struggle with different challenges when it comes to our children. Ask the parent if they need help with anything prior to the playdate. “I almost always have a few extra things to carry so please don’t be shy about asking if I need help.” says Taylor. “I also need a lot of grace.” Try to be patient and understanding. The other parent may be overwhelmed or tired. It may have been challenging to get there. All parents have great days where everything goes as planned and tough days where it seems nothing does. Listen and offer a hand when needed and they will most likely offer the same in return. The most important tip for having a playdate with a special needs child is just to have them. It may take a little more planning and patience than the average playdate, but it is so worth it to both the parents and kids involved. Playdates offer a great chance for kids to interact with peers and make friends in a non stressful way, and they are also a great time for parents to connect and build each other up as well. Sarah Lyons is a wife and stay at home mom to six children, including 2 year old triplets.

San Antonio Museum of Art Egyptian Animal Mummies: Science Explores an Ancient Religion in this upcoming exhibition. These reliquaries will be presented for the first time alongside the Museum’s collection of animal mummies. Recently conserved for this exhibition, the mummies include a cat, three crocodiles, two ibises, and three falcons. The exhibition focuses on the creation of the mummies, their role in ancient Egyptian religion, and their burial. In collaboration with the San Antonio Zoo and the Radiology Department at University of Texas Health San Antonio, the mummies underwent modern scientific methods of examination including X-ray imaging and CT scanning, which made it possible to understand and analyze the contents of the mummies without unwrapping them. These tests and their results will be featured in the exhibition. Exhibition runs March 23 through July 1, 2018 and is free with Museum admission. San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W.
