The largeS t number of junior high students r es pond e d with c oncerns in the overall a~ea of th e physical aspects of their neighborhood. (S ee Table 1 6.) Within this category, _the problem area most often mentioned was t he neighborhood's streets and alleys, with the majority concerned about cleani ng and repairs. Many students stated that the alleys we re in serious need of being c le an ed up, in places being strewn with broken glass and therefore unsa fe to bot h motori s ts and children. A second concern was th e lack of sufficient street light i ng in the neighborhood. The second major cat e gory of concern, in terms of frequency of response, was the condition of the neighborhood's housing. Most all of the suggestions ce nt er around improving the quality of the homes, repairing, remod e ling , maintaining, etc., as opposed to starting all over and building new housing . Closely related to this is the frequent mention of cleaning up, maintaining , and impr ovin g yards and lawns . In the area loosely defined as "municipal services" , th e main co ncern s seem to be with animals - dogs and rats. A number of students mentioned th e existence of large numbers of dogs that are either strays which are not being pick e d up or neighborhood pets not being chained up or kept on a leash . The l ast sect ion in the overall category of physical aspects of the neigh~orho o d deals wi th commercial establishments.
