Find the Best Care with Sacred Private Home Care

By Kristen Eleveld

Shae Sankofa has always felt drawn to help people. Even as a child, she found herself gravitating toward friends and family members who needed some additional care, especially those who struggled with daily tasks as they got older. Now, Shae has put her passion to work in Gwinnett through Sacred Private Home Care, a business designed to give the extra care needed to loved ones in your life. We’ve all been there – an aging relative can no longer stay home alone safely, or an unexpected twisted ankle causes us to be bedridden for a few days. Sacred Private Home Care can help with all of that, meaning the stress of worrying over who will look after you or your loved ones is no longer your burden to bear. Officially licensed in 2013, Sacred Private Home Care utilizes a thorough system of establishing needs and getting to know clients that allows them to offer customized care to every client they serve. Whether it’s post-surgery care for six weeks or end-of-life care for six months, Sacred Private Home Care has a team of people ready to help. “I’ve seen the toll that extra care can take on a family,” said Shae. “I wanted to find a way to help.” The process is detailed but easy to navigate. First, Shae or one of her team members will speak with you over the phone to assess what will be needed through the home care service. After that, someone from Sacred Private Home Care will come to your home to determine how they can best meet your needs and decide which of their qualified team members will be a good fit for you. This is done at no cost or obligation to any potential client. Shae just wants people to know

they have options. After the home visit, you and your loved one will attend a meetand-greet that will introduce you to the caregiver assigned to you and your family. This is your opportunity to get to know the caregiver, ask questions, and voice any concerns. Likewise, the caregiver wants to get to know you and your family and learn how they can help you through this time. If you feel that the caregiver is a good match for your needs, services will be set up in your home as soon as possible. Continued on page 20

@RyanSauers

@RyanTSauers

How are you? I hope you are enjoying both the warmer weather and extended daylight hours. It seems that life all around us is slowly moving back to normal. I could not be more excited. In this column, I wanted to do something different. Let us focus on three “P” words to reflect on as we move forward in 2022. First, is Purpose. What is your purpose? Have you had a chance to think about it and your legacy in this world? For me it is about helping people in as many ways as I can. I have been reminded that none of us will live forever, and thus how we conduct ourselves and treat others is of utmost importance. We should try and hear God’s voice and remind ourselves that we are never fully in control of any situation. So, we must control the controllables. Second, is Passion. Americans are tough and resilient. We can take a punch or two. I have seen passionate business owners, non-profits, government leaders, and more “pivot, pivot, and repivot” over the past twenty-four months. The resilience has been amazing to watch. Moreover, I have had the great opportunity during this time to reconnect or connect at a deeper level with so many people in my life. I view the past two years as the “great reset,” and it has helped us all remember more of what really matters in life. And, that we are human beings and not human doings. Third, is Perseverance. Let us face it – the past two years have been tough to navigate due to constant change. But most everyone I know has persevered, learned, grown, and have come to see life in new ways. I am so proud of our community and of people picking each other up and helping each other out. Long term passion and perseverance make up a powerful theory known as GRIT. Stay GRITTY, my friends! If we learned anything during the past couple of years, it was that slowing down a bit is nice and that we all seek more balance in our lives. So, in the month of April and as we head toward the summer,let us remain positive, patient, passionate, and purposeful.

Protocol Films – Entertaining Gwinnett One Film at a Time By Traci Sanders

Richard and Hattie Diaz met in a local theater show a few years ago. They married soon after and founded Protocol Films in August 2020. The couple has been entertaining Gwinnett and surrounding communities ever since. As CEO and co-founder, Richard serves as the imagination for the company. His film, Orange Sky, was nominated for three awards and won two awards through the Southern Horror Film Festival. He loves to encourage creativity in others. Co-founder and president Hattie is the brain of the company. Her short film, SEEN, was featured in the Summer of the South Film Festival. Both Richard and Hattie

are experienced writers, directors, and actors. Protocol Films was “created for the creative,” as it boasts on its website. Richard and Hattie’s goal is to not only produce high-quality short films, feature films, dramas, comedies, and parodies, but also professional commercials and audition tapes for fellow actors. The website provides self-taping services that are self-guided but also offers coaching to those who need a bit of assistance or insight. At the moment, their films are shot only in Georgia locations, as the couple resides in Gwinnett County. However, they are willing to travel for projects. Richard and Hattie are proud to offer high-quality films to their community and are always open to ways of giving back. The couple donated their time and equipment to shoot a promotional video for American Immersion Theater, Atlanta Troupe, to help them expand their cause of donating clothes for local homeless citizens. I asked Hattie where she and Richard draw inspiration for their films, and she replied, “It’s a mixture of personal experiences and creativity. Since Covid pretty much cancelled Halloween for many kids, we created a short film to show that kids could still go trick-ortreating during Covid and stay safe by following CDC guidelines. It also showed that the community is always able to help each other and support other families, even in small ways.” When asked what they would consider their worst and best films so far, Hattie laughed and said, “We did a short film called Big Little Book of Thanks that was written, filmed, and edited within a twentyfour-hour time period. My husband said it was the worst one he has ever done and wishes it could’ve been better. Our best film, in my opinion, would be SEEN. I wrote the script, but my husband and I worked together to create this short film about suicide awareness. We’re really proud of it.” Some of Hattie’s celebrity heroes are Jennifer Aniston, Ryan Reynolds, and Sandra Bullock. Richard’s celebrity influences are J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg, and Robert Zemeckis. However, Hattie mentioned that her entire family is full of real-life heroes who have been supporting her journey since she was two. Her brother, Ian, filmed their latest piece, Kidnapped, set to release this year. The film was Hattie’s concept, but a friend of Hattie’s, Micaela Dee, wrote the script. Hattie’s mother, Candy Cole, has been a constant support in her career. Richard’s son, Indiana, is a recently established YouTuber who streams himself playing video games, and who has been acting since the age of six.

One on One with Elaine Amankwah Nietmann By Our Town Gwinnett Staff

Our Town Gwinnett (OTG): Please tell our readers a little about yourself. Who were your mentors and role models? Elaine Amankwah Nietmann (EAN): I am a candidate for Gwinnett County State Court Judge. I have four children with my husband of thirteen years, one of whom has special needs. I immigrated to the United States at the young age of nine years from Ghana, West Africa. My grandparents raised me when I lived in Ghana. My grandfather was the son of the Asante King Prempeh I and a Supreme Court Judge of Ghana. He instilled in me from a very young age a sense of justice that motivated me to go to law school when I became an adult. When I relocated to the United States, the hard work of my parents, working two to three jobs to provide for our large family, and their willingness to serve others ingrained in me a dedicated work ethic that I have carried throughout my life. OTG: Describe some of the struggles you’ve encountered and how you overcame them. EAN: I initially struggled with my son’s autism diagnosis as it came with several challenges. I had to put my faith and trust in God,

and with hard work, encouragement, and the help of others, I was able to help my son achieve several goals and receive treatment for his special needs. The process taught me patience, faith, love, and trust in the community. I learned to celebrate progress no matter how minor or slow it came. OTG: What are your favorite things to do? EAN: I love to garden. I enjoy both indoor and outdoor gardening. OTG: What role does community play in your life? EAN: The community has kept my family and I safe, healthy, and happy. We have been blessed by all the activities Gwinnett County has had to offer us. We have enjoyed and experienced growth in Gwinnett County’s summer camps, sports, swim teams, Vacation Bible Schools, festivals, and so much more. OTG: How do you give back to your community? EAN: I give back to my community through my legal services. For the past several years, I have dedicated my law practice to civil, family, and public defense work. I have been a conflict public defender for the State of Georgia. I also volunteer as guardian ad litem for Gwinnett County Probate Court. In my own private cases I have taken on clients that could not afford to pay my full retainer up front or sometimes could not afford to pay my retainer at all. I have traveled to the homes and care facilities of the elderly to assist them with completing their Wills, Georgia Advance Directives, and Power of Attorney documents. OTG: What things are you most excited about in the future? EAN: I am excited about the plans God has in store for me in the future. As a Christian I have a strong faith ethic that I will always be taken care of and protected. I am excited about my judicial race. My background and experience have prepared me well to become Gwinnett County’s next state court judge, and I look forward to assuming that role. I am excited about my family and look forward to watching my children grow up in Gwinnett County. More information at https://www.elainenietmann4judge.com/

Getting Older: Fighting the Good Fight By Our Town Gwinnett Staff

Though one is not actually fighting, but as you age, you’d better have your game face on, because as is often said, “Aging is NOT for the faint of heart!” You must attack aging offensively, or all too quickly you will be playing defense. That said, it is never too late to get healthy! The people who go to the Mountain Park First Baptist Church Wellness Center reclaim their health every day, their “youth renewed like eagles” (Psalm 103:5). It is challenging work to move sometimes, but with friends beside you who are going through the exact same things you are, exercise can actually be enjoyable. Tucked away behind the Rockbridge Kroger, Mountain Park First Baptist Church Wellness Center attracts people from all over DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties. Though the Wellness Center is open for

There are recumbent and upright bicycles, elliptical machines, treadmills, a soft-impact indoor walking track, and indoor pickleball for all levels. A variety of fitness classes cater to beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. They are taught by a certified personal trainer with a specialty in exercise for older adults and adults with chronic diseases and by another certified instructor who’s been teaching for fourteen years. The most popular classes are Balance for Fall Prevention and Stretching for Flexibility, but low-impact cardio and strength-training classes are also offered. “When I first came to the wellness center,” says Charles Shepherd, “I was using a cane. Community Spotlight: Lilburn Business Association By Traci Sanders

The Lilburn Business Association (LBA) was established in 1992 as a way to bring local business owners together to support one another and the Lilburn community. Sandra Waldrop, PhD, has been on the Board since 2013 and president since 2019. The mission of LBA is to support the continuous growth of business in Lilburn and in the surrounding communities. Its vision is to create a prosperous local economy, supported by strong alliances and engagement between thriving local business communities that value LBA as a cornerstone of their success. Businesses do not have to reside in the Lilburn community to be part of LBA. However, that’s typically the case. LBA holds two business meetings per month – a breakfast gathering on the first Friday and lunch-hour session on the third Tuesday of each month. A monthly After-Hours event was recently added and is typically held on the last Monday of each month. Meeting locations are announced with each meeting’s details. Businesses that become part of LBA receive many perks and benefits including being listed in the LBA directory, receiving discounts on LBA events, and member pricing at Gwinnett Chamber events. Additionally, one or two businesses are profiled monthly as a Business Spotlight. These business owners are allowed five-minute presentations at monthly meetings to introduce their services, have a short video interview produced, and receive shout outs on social media to help expand awareness of their brands. The LBA also lists announcements for local businesses, such as awards received or employment opportunities. LBA was a nominee for the Gwinnett Chamber Small Business Awards for 2020 and 2021 and is constantly looking for ways to enhance and support the community. Community support has included using catering from the Culinary Arts students at Berkmar High School, funding the Lilburn Middle School (LMS) Orchestra’s trip to a competition, providing gift cards for use by the Care Team at LMS, providing speakers for Career Day at local schools, providing personal dictionaries for 3rd grade students as part of the Lilburn Woman’s Club Dictionary Project literacy effort, as well as donating to local non-profit groups such as the Grace Note Foundation. Meeting programs have included interviews of local successful businesses owners, resources for business owners such as the Gwinnett Entrepreneurship Center, information on hiring from the disability community, discussions of books on business topics, and informational presentations from government leaders on local development around Lilburn. A recent member to LBA has volunteered his videographer skills to create short promotional videos for the members. These videos are shared on the websites and social media pages of both the members and LBA. Visitors are always welcome. Fundamentally, LBA is about networking and building relationships, and is always looking for business leaders who want to become more involved in the organization and the community. Making a Difference in Gwinnett: Mental Health Task Force

By Senior Deputy Ashley Castiblanco, Public Information Officer Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor established the Mental Health Task Force to decriminalize mental illness within the criminal justice system and actively reduce the community’s stigma. The team focuses on intervening and de-escalating encounters with mentally ill individuals experiencing a crisis. The Mental Health Task Force’s mission is to advocate, educate, and enforce the shift of mentally ill persons out of the criminal justice system and into the proper care facilities. Mental Illness Stigma has traditionally been a catalyst in the migration of the mentally ill into the criminal justice system due to its consistent detrimental effect on the help-seeking behaviors of the mentally ill and their families. Since its inception, the Mental Health Task Force has intervened in fifty-one cases. One of these cases involved a 19-year-old female in Snellville who was experiencing a crisis. She was having suicidal ideation and anxiety. Mental Health Task Force deputies were able to approach her, intervene, de-escalate and refer her to one of their partners, Ridgeview Behavioral Health. Deputies completed a bio-psycho-social assessment and safely transported her to Ridgeview Monroe at her own free will. At Ridgeview Monroe, she received six days of psychiatric care. This situation could have ended tragically, but by utilizing proper training and de-escalation techniques, the Mental Health Task Force was able to calm this young woman and take her to receive medical attention. Mental Health Task Force deputies also conduct follow-ups on the citizens they aid. A few weeks passed, and deputies followed up on this young woman. She was very appreciative that deputies supported Continued on page 19

Earth Day: More Than Planting Trees By Tana Poncsak

Earth Day started in 1970 out of concern for the environment and to bring awareness of the effects of industry and pollution on the planet. It was primarily a movement aimed at college students around the United States. In fact, according to the Earth Day website, April 22nd was chosen because the date fell between spring break and final exams. Since then, Earth Day has become a global initiative that continues to bring awareness to the plight of the planet. To many, Earth Day may seem like an opportunity to plant trees or to pick up trash. And while those activities are a part of caring for our planet, Earth Day goes well beyond trees and trash. The movement continues to fight for clean water and a clean environment, and promotes behavioral approaches that produce less stress and create a more favorable future for the planet we call home. Ongoing campaigns include Climate and Environmental Literacy, The Canopy Project, Footprints for the Future, and Regenerative Agriculture, just to name a few. On April 22, 2022, people around the globe will participate in another Earth Day to help bring awareness to changes and actions that we can take to make a marked and positive difference to our planet and our environment. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Invest in our Planet.” Just as you invest in your yourself, your family, and your career, you can invest in the future of planet Earth. If you’re wondering how to join in the Earth Day festivities, there are plenty of activities around the community and the Atlanta area, including an Earth Day Run, an Earth Day Hike, and other independent events scheduled and open to the public. You can find an event near you by checking the local community websites of your surrounding cities, parks and recreation authorities, schools, independent clubs, organizations, and venues. Or you can find and register for local events through the Earth Day website.

Show Your Ride for the Ribbons: Car Show in the Depot By Traci Sanders

If you enjoy cars, music, art, and beer, then you’ll definitely want to be at The Depot District in Lawrenceville (between Ironshield Brewing and Slow Pour Brewing Company) on April 30th between the hours of 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. for the Show Your Ride for the Ribbons: Car Show in the Depot event. Last year over 500 people showed up to check out over 225 classic and modern cars to raise money for cancer. CEO of Beyond the Ribbon, Bobbie Menneg, organized this event and it was a huge success! So, she decided to do it again. And this year, it is an official City of Lawrenceville event. As a survivor of Triple Negative Breast Cancer that involved a couple of surgeries, six rounds of chemo, and thirty-three radiation treatments, Menneg started Beyond the Ribbon and made it her mission to educate and support local cancer survivors and their families in their journeys. She visits survivors and their families in their homes and during treatments, offers cleaning services, organizes meal trains, and helps raise funds to cover treatments, medications, and living expenses. “I was lucky my support system was reliable, the best doctors and nurses you could ask for, the strength that I found in myself, and had decent insurance so as to not destroy us financially,” Menneg said. “Unfortunately, not so many others when diagnosed have the same support available to them.” Menneg is partnering with the City of Lawrenceville, Ironshield Brewing, Slow Pour Brewing Company, The Dizzy Gypsy Art Gallery, and Georgia Pinup Posse to host this event at Lawrenceville’s Depot District, located along North Chestnut Street, just minutes from the Historic Square in Lawrenceville. She will be handing out

awards for: Best in Show, Most Car Club Cars in Participation, Kids’ Choice, Top 30, and Survivors’ Choice. Additionally, door prizes such as gift cards, a barbecue kit, jewelry, gas cards, and a spa facial will be distributed to random winners. “Anything with wheels is welcome: cars, trucks, motorcycles, sling shots, vintage and modern,” Menneg shared. Participants are also welcome to enter more than one vehicle. The entry fee is $20 per vehicle. Various car paraphernalia and other novelty items will be offered throughout the show space. Pinup models will be walking around and doing photoshoots. Live music, shows, and pinup makeovers will be happening on two different stages. Visitors can also view various car and pinup art by local artists displayed on the walls inside both breweries. Sponsors are constantly being added. A full list of sponsors will be available on the website. Last year, with it being her first time hosting an event of this nature, Menneg set a goal of raising $5,000, but ended up doubling that in the end. “Thanks to our community and our incredible BTR Squad volunteers, we were able to pay out over $25,000 last year to assist our families in our community.” With support from the City and even more sponsors, their sights are set even higher this year to impact even more survivors and their families. Pet Perch: Your Dog, Your Choice By Terie Hansen

There seems to be a trend with dog owners being publicly harassed and/or shamed for not allowing the public (or even friends, family, and neighbors) to pet their dog. I have not experienced this, and it is simply that I am acutely aware at any given time of where and what others are doing around my dog and client dogs. Moreover, I am frequently in public with dogs I am training. When I am, I always have my game face on. Meaning I am not there to engage with the public. I am working and focusing on the dog while still maintaining awareness of my surroundings. Why? Because at any given moment, a perfect stranger may try to come up to pet a dog I am working without even asking. If someone is encroaching into mine or the dog’s personal space, I move away – while saying “heel” to the dog. If someone asks if they can pet the dog, I simply reply “No, I’m sorry. He’s in training right now.” I also make sure that I consistently position the dog behind me (where they should be anyway), that way the person would have to go past me to get to the dog. When you are out and about with your dog, you should maintain the lead position so that you can advocate for your dog. Therefore, it is your dog your choice as to whether you want your dog to engage with others. Even at home, if you put your dog in command, like down or place, you can choose who you allow approaching your dog. Most client dogs are either overexcited or nervous and fearful because in the past their owners have allowed people and dogs to

enter their dog’s personal space repeatedly. Under the guise of socializing their dogs, they end up creating a reactive dog. We teach dogs and our client’s existence over interaction. We teach our dogs to exist calmly in all sorts of environments, around dogs, people, kids, etc. Once they can calmly exist (which can take months of training), we can begin to selectively teach our now calm dog how to appropriately interact occasionally. Do not be shamed, pressured, or influenced by the opinions of others. It is your dog and your choice. Would you allow strangers to touch your child? You are training your dog in a way that creates a much happier, well-balanced, and calmer companion. One which will have a more enriched life than most dogs currently enjoy. You and your dog will reap the rewards of being bold and advocating for your goals. Terie Hansen is the Owner or Good Dog! Coaching & Pet Care More information at www.gooddogcoaching.com

Perhaps after spending time reading a good book, the best thing afterward is finding someone else who has also read it so you can talk about it. For many, half the fun of reading the book is then talking about it, discussing the plot, the characters, the structure of the novel, the writing, and more. But with so many people and so many books, finding the person who has read a particular book and willing to chat about can be difficult. That’s why book clubs were created! If you’re a reader and are thinking of joining a book club, you can start by asking around at your local bookstore or library about existing book clubs in your area. But if that isn’t an option, then why not consider starting a book club of your own? Here are a few things to think about if you decide to start a book club. Weigh the options and choose what’s best for you and what you envision. • Since technically we’re still in a pandemic, you may want to consider whether to have a virtual book club that meets online or one that meets locally and in person. Some book club meetings are held in each member’s home on a rotation basis. Others prefer to meet in a public setting such as a restaurant, a coffee house, a wine bar, a library, or other public venue. And of course, you may want to consider COVID protocols. • If virtual is the better option, will you use Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Facebook, etc.? • Do you want to stick to one genre or theme? For example, if you enjoy cozy mysteries, then a cozy mystery book club may appeal to you. Some other genres include romance, fantasy, sci fi, women’s literature, historic fiction, and contemporary fiction. • How many participants would you like to have? Some book clubs have started with as little as three readers, while others have started with as many as twenty or more. And speaking of numbers, do you want to have a cap on the number of members to keep a smaller, more intimate group, or are you thinking “the more the merrier”? • How will the books the group reads be selected? You can make all the selections at the beginning, or you can hold a discussion and take a vote by the members, so everyone decides. Or perhaps each member can take a turn and pick the book they want all members to read. • How often will you meet? Not everyone reads at the same speed, so some may need more time than others to finish a book, especially if it’s a longer book. Once you decide on how you want your book club to run, you can focus on acquiring members. • The first and most obvious way to find book club members is through your sphere of influence – your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and other acquaintances. Don’t be offended if some come for the wine, food, and friendship at first. After a few months and a few good books, they may fall in love with reading. • Your local bookstore, library, or coffee shop may be willing to give Continued on page 21

Fighting the Good Fight Continued from page 10 Wellness Center since its opening in the late 1990s. The Center strives to deliver high quality preventative and post-rehabilitative care, but that is not usually what sustains the members. People report that it is the relationships that keep them coming back. Sometimes, a friend invites them. But if they come not knowing anyone, it does not take long before four or five people have approached them and introduced themselves. This is because the environment is intentionally inviting. As a ministry of Mountain Park First Baptist Church, the Wellness Center aims to welcome everyone with the love and acceptance of Christ. “Classes get me up and going in the morning!” says Judy Davis, who’s been coming to the Wellness Center for about nine years. “But I love the social aspect, meeting people, drinking coffee. The exercise is just a bonus. I love joking around in class.” There may be a few ex-collegiate varsity athletes that come in, but for the most part, it’s a group of regular people with varying fitness levels. Some are in shape for their age, some are not. But they are there, showing up and giving it their best shot. For many, it’s a new start, a fresh start, or a re-start. It does not matter, because when it comes to health and wellness, anything is better than nothing. It’s never too late to do the right thing by your body! Any amount of exercise effort you can put in will reap benefits physiologically, but also socially and emotionally. Take courage that you can feel and look better than your chronological age. You can make friends with others who have been hanging in there during the pandemic just like you. A community of peers is waiting for you. The fitness center is located at 5485 Five Forks Trickum Rd. Stone Mountain, GA 30087 in Building C. More information at https://mpfbc.org/wellness

Earth Day Continued from page 15 But the movement isn’t about just a day and won’t stop after April 22nd. It’s a continuous effort with plenty of ways to get involved if you’re looking for an ongoing commitment. In the meantime, there are small ways we can affect positive change when it comes to our planet and its resources. We’ve all heard the words “going green,” and there are few things you can do to be a little “greener” without a lot of sacrifice. Some common activities on many lists include: Conserving water Using public transportation, carpooling, walking, or riding a bike when possible Reusing and recycling items Cleaning up your community

Drinking from a reusable water bottle Eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat Whatever we do as individuals may not seem like much. But if we all do our share, we can make a difference every day, starting with Earth Day.
