Make
your own
mo
The ultimate Guide to making your own mo.
Throughout the year Oxford University Student Union supports a variety of different charities through its fundraising arm RAG (Raise and Give). This month we are working to raise money for the Movember and Sons movement which raises funds and awareness around men’s health issues. We hope that everyone can join us in growing or, if you don’t have the hair-follicle capacity, at least making your own mo. This leaflet will guide you in how to make a simple mo with a piece of felt and a bit of time - not as much as it would take to grow a real one!
If you want to find out more about Movember and Sons, then Click Here! What you need 1. A bit of felt (approximately 20 cm x 20 cm). 2. Sewing needle and some pins. 3. Thread in the same colour as the felt. 4. Cotton or polyester filling. 5. The moustache template from the Oxford Student Newspaper Issue 6 (if you haven’t already cut out the template, then print out this page on a standard A4 and cut out the moustache below). 6. Brooch pin
Template: Print and cut out the above mo.
Instructions Start by folding the felt so that you have two corners meeting and pin the moustache template to the felt. The reason for folding the felt is that when you cut, instead of cutting out one moustache at a time you are cutting out two. Cut out the moustache by following the template. You will now have two separate moustache pieces. Pin them together. Thread the needle and knot the thread. Bring the knot to the reverse of one of the felt pieces, anchoring the thread so the needle will come out of the felt at the top. Sew the sides together by looping the needle through both felt pieces, leaving a 1-cm gap to allow for stuffing. If you want a neater finish you can use Blanket Stitch - you can find countless tutorials for Blanket Stitch online. Stuff the moustache with the cotton/polyester filling using the back of a pen. Use quite a lot of filling as this will make the moustache look more rounded. Finish by sewing up the gap. Knot the thread on the back of the fabric to anchor and secure the thread. If you want to use your mo as a brooch then all you need to do is sew a brooch pin onto the back. You can find brooch pins in most haberdasheries. For a list of suppliers in Oxford please see back of leaflet. Voilà ! You have now got your very own mo! Don’t forget to show us your mo!
