or many of us, rebuilding our first engine was not something we did just for fun; rather, it was an undertaking borne of necessity. Even so, completing this task successfully elevated one to a higher status in the realm of tinkerers and shade-tree mechanics. There is little that is more gratifying than hearing your first engine roar to life after you’ve disemboweled it, cleaned and inspected its internals, and reassembled it with new parts replacing the worn or damaged ones. While that initial start-up is akin to automotive nirvana, the opposite is also true; nothing could be more disappointing than having your moment of anticipation met with disaster. Most of us who have built more than a couple of engines have been there. Overlooking the smallest detail or chunk of dirt can have a dreadful effect. The outcome is that we learn to hedge our engine-building success with attention to detail. One can rarely shortcut success. Of course, if your engine rebuild involves more than a backyard re-ring (and it should!) the process will likely include a trip to a competent automotive machine shop. A full-service machine shop can handle all phases of the rebuild from teardown to final assembly, but if you are the hands-on type you might opt to handle these steps yourself. If so, you’ll seek the services of the machine shop to recondition the major components – the cylinder block, heads, crankshaft, and connecting rods. Have you ever wondered what happens to those pieces after you leave them with the machinist? Even the most untrained eye can see that the workers transform grungy hunks of metal into parts so clean that your mother wouldn’t hesitate to touch them 6

with her bare fingers. But what else do they do? What sets one shop apart from another? For answers to these questions we consulted Paul Alderman of Alderman Automotive Machine in New Castle, Del. He says, “Ask for a tour of any machine shop you are considering. Look around. Is it clean and organized? Is it well-equipped?” Reputation and turn-around time should also be factored into your decision. Talk to other car guys and racers. Once you have decided on the shop you will use, talk to the machinist. Alderman says, “I would rather talk to a customer at the beginning of the build and discuss various upgrades.” Some of these upgrades might impact the machining that will be done. “It’s better to make these decisions now, and it’s better to make them together with the machinist rather than a person at some distant location, such as a mail-order warehouse, who might not know for sure what will or won’t work.” Alderman states that the first step is to clean and inspect the parts. “After a thorough cleaning we pressure test aluminum cylinder heads in order to find any cracks. We do a magnetic particle inspection, also known as Magna-flux, on cast iron parts,” he says. The magnetic particles gather along the lines of any crack, making it visible. “Some people don’t think this is necessary, but cracks don’t get smaller or go away. They grow. We don’t want to waste our time or the customer’s money by doing any work on a part that’s cracked.”

Crankshaft are checked for straightness. Their journals are measured and inspected for scoring and other surface imperfections. When necessary, crankshafts can often be straightened and their journals machined undersize to achieve good surfaces on which the bearings will ride. Some machine shops have the ability to balance crankshafts, although this is not usually done during most rebuilds. Balancing is usually not required unless the pistons and/ or connecting rods are being replaced with ones that are significantly lighter than the factory parts or unless the engine will see higher than normal speeds. When an engine is balanced, the weights of the rods and pistons are equalized and the crankshaft is balanced to match. Because most domestic engines have piston wrist pins that are pressed into the rods, replacing the pistons requires pressing out the wrist pins and pressing in the new ones. Once the wrist pins have been pressed out, reconditioning the connecting rods involves inspecting them for straightness. If bent or twisted, the “big end” (crankshaft end) and “small end” (piston wrist pin end) are brought back into parallel. The inner part of the big end is also checked for roundness, and it is machined if necessary. The first step in reconditioning a cylinder head is to make sure that the deck surface is flat and smooth. If the surface is damaged, pitted, or warped, it is resurfaced. Next, the valve guides are checked for wear. If they are worn excessively, they are replaced. This is done before any valve seat work because the valve seat tools are indexed by the guides in order to keep the guides and seats concentric. In aluminum heads, the guides are inserts. The old ones are driven out and new ones driven in. In cast iron heads, the guides are machined into the iron. Replacing them involves drilling them out, then driving in new ones. With older equipment, the drilling process typically used the old guide as an index. This could be problematic because any inaccuracy in the factory machining or

inaccuracy introduced by indexing on an unevenly worn guide would then be repeated when the new guide was installed. This sometimes resulted in guides that were not positioned exactly as intended. Reconditioning the valve seats was then done with grinding stones. The seat was ground with one stone, and then top-cut and throat-cut stones were used to trim the seat to the specified width. (Have you ever heard someone bragging about having a three-angle valve job? The truth is that all properly reconditioned seats had a minimum of three angles.) This method worked well on early iron heads, but proved somewhat difficult on the hardened valve seat inserts used in aluminum heads as well as the hardened exhaust valve seats in iron heads intended for use with unleaded fuel. Alderman Automotive Machine uses Newen Generation II cylinder head reconditioning equipment. Alderman explains, “The head is set up on a fixture. The tooling floats over the head and centers on the guide, locking directly over it. Then it cuts the seat, ensuring that the guide and seat are concentric.” Cutting the seats (versus grinding them) reduces the inaccuracy caused by the wearing of grinding stones. They also have special cutters for many popular cylinder heads that include the seat, top, and throat angles in one cutter. Some also include additional angles or radii that open up the throat and bowl areas for improved flow and performance. In the past, many block reconditioning procedures indexed from factory-machined surfaces. For example, the cylinders were bored by boring bars that sat squarely on the deck surface. Unfortunately, engine blocks that were mass-produced half a century ago often prove to have startling inaccuracies. The decks are not always parallel to the crankshaft, nor are they exactly perpendicular to each other. To do the job properly, these inaccuracies should be identified and corrected. Alderman Automotive Machine has invested in the latest equipment for cylinder block reconditioning – the RMC V30. This machine uses CNC technology to measure the critical points of a block and to ensure that it is machined to strict tolerances. The V30 indexes the main bearing saddles, and then a probe touches a special indexing hole in the underside of the block. “From there, it knows where the block is in space,” Alderman explains. “Next it probes the bores and the decks. It gives the bore sizes and deck heights, and it displays the errors from the factory blueprint dimensions.” In addition to leaving the factory with decks that are not properly squared to the crankshaft,

sometimes the cylinder bore spacing is off or the cylinder bores are not perpendicular to the crankshaft. “Ideally, it is possible to correct geometric inaccuracies that left the factory provided we have enough material to work with. If not, we can leave the bore centers where they are and simply bore the cylinders oversize,” says Alderman. Although not ideal, this permits a block with slight errors to be returned to service instead of having to be replaced. Alderman says, “Now we can resurface the decks, bore the cylinders, and chamfer them all in one machine without having to disturb the setup. Before, we had to use several machines.” He adds that there are also programs to clearance the block for stroker cranks – the cam area, notches in the bottoms of the cylinders, as well as the oil pan rails. In addition, the V30 is capable of machining blocks for cylinder sleeves, four-bolt main conversions, and bushed lifter bores as well as creating clearance for the tie-bars of retrofit roller lifters. Once the main machining steps have been completed, the cylinders must be honed to their final size. This includes achieving the proper cross-hatch angle and micro-finish for the type of piston rings that will be used. For this, Alderman Automotive Machine employs a fully automatic Rottler HP7A. “Instead of using stones and oil as in the past, this machine uses a diamond abrasive and special coolant. It gives more consistent pressure, and the coolant maintains the proper temperature to achieve a tolerance within two ten-thousandths of an inch or better,” says Alderman. About the coolant he says, “Heat really affects the accuracy during honing. With the circulating coolant, that’s not a problem.” When planning an engine rebuild, it pays to do some research before selecting a machine shop. The success of your rebuild depends on it.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Woodbury Car Show If one had to conjure up the setting for a perfect car show, they could not have come up with a day better than the one we received for the annual Woodbury show. The temperature was in the mid-80s and low humidity. The conditions were good enough to attract 265 enthusiasts and their favorite rides. The event was sponsored by the Woodbury Merchants Association with the assistance of the Greater Woodbury Kiwanis. There was everything from military vehicles to an Amphicar Model 770 which is an amphibious automobile – the first such vehicle massproduced for sale to the public starting in 1961. And yes, the owner did admit to the occasional trip to his local body of water to test out the water tight construction of this baby. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Joe Lucca

It’s a Shore Show Thing Back in the day, shore communities halted many of their tourist seasons right after Labor Day. Today, in states that are lucky enough to have an ocean bordering them, we enjoy an extension of the shore season right up to the first cold weather. Take the city of Wildwood, N.J.’s car event at the end of September - the Fall Boardwalk Classic Car Show and Auction. There were no shortages of cars as over 900 pre-1989 rides assembled to be on the famous and friendly boardwalk. To top it all off was the car auction held in the Convention Hall. There were many fine rides up for the bidding and the free spectator admission made it a great deal. In a way, there were two car shows. That would be the cars officially on display and the many specialty cars that parked at the motels. The Jersey Shore and the city of Wildwood really keep the summer going as long as possible and you know that’s a good thing. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Blue Cruise It is this writer’s opinion that we sometimes forget those in public life that serve the community. Such a group, among many, are the men and women in law enforcement. That’s a considerable group that ranges from police, to sheriff’s department and corrections officers. There are times when we forget that they have a unique profession that does not always have dealings with the cream of society. Having worked with many law enforcement professionals over the years, I thought it would be a nice gesture to have a cruise to show our support for those who serve. Thus, the Blue Cruise event was organized last November. This is normally called the Frostbite Cruise, but on this occasion it was renamed. Over 300 cruisers with their rides came out to this gathering that was open to cars and cycles. A crisp autumn day also saw members of several law enforcement agencies come out to the Vineland Senior High School parking lot in Vineland, N.J., and share some time with the cruisers. Many of the car owners came from all over the Southern New Jersey area. Of course, music from a local DJ and hot food was a part of the traditional cruise scene. There was also money raised that went to the local Police Athletic League. Special thanks goes to the members of the South Jersey Cruisers Association car group for keeping everything organized and running smooth. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

It’s Traditional There are many definitions and classifications of the types of cars found in the car hobby. Each interpretation has clear and also somewhat cloudy areas of what a particular type of car is. Take, for example, the traditional rod. It shows a ride that reflects the build of cars back in the beginning of the hot rod era. These times in American car history reflect simplicity and function. Traditional rides have also been referred to, on occasion, as rat rods. There are sometimes fine lines in the interpretation of which is which. Not all cars were perfect in paint and build, but they sure have personality. The most important thing to remember is that they reflect American ingenuity at its best for the day. They also were, and still are, just plain fun. The Race of Gentlemen in Wildwood, N.J., brings the best out in traditional rides each first weekend in October. Cars race on the beach, not for trophies but for the fun of enjoying classic American iron. They also had traditional custom rides on display that reflect the early era of personalizing one’s ride. By the looks of all who participated and attended, not only are the cars traditional, but the fun of our hobby reflected well, too. That fun part is traditional no matter what you drive. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 9

2016 Interclub Meeting You know the cruising and car show season is just around the corner when Cruising Magazine holds its annual Interclub meeting. Representatives from 5 states came out to the Christiana Hilton in Christiana, Del. to share their 2016 show and cruise calendars. The mild winter weather filled the meeting with the energy of the club representatives to get the season off to a great and fast start. Master of ceremonies CM publisher Jerry DuPhily got the assemblage started and Larry Lazareff and CM contributor Ben Notaro kept the meeting flowing seamlessly. The meeting was at overflow capacity of 150 attendees and the breakfast buffet, which is a part of this traditional gathering, made sure no one left hungry. Cruising Magazine, once again, has proven to be the car owners’ source for what’s happening in the hobby. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Pumpkin Run Twenty years is a good run for a car event. Usually by that time it reaches a high point and just goes on. Well, there is an event that just keeps getting larger and more unique each year, and that is the Pumpkin Run held at Fleming’s Auto Parts yard in Egg Harbor Township, N.J. This year was no exception to the continued growth of this one-of-a-kind event. The car count was over 2,500 rides and the spectators just kept coming through the gate. Where else can you see all types of rides, a stock car museum, military rides, tractors, a food court, 250+ vendors, dinosaurs (no joke), alien creatures and much, much more. Plus there was music by Mack Thomas, a DJ that is a certifiable car guy. Harry Fleming and his crew put on a top notch car and family event that will knock your socks off. You may want to mark your calendar for the first weekend in November for the next, very original Pumpkin Run. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

2016 Atlantic City Car Auction As the winter comes to a close, many car guys and gals start to get a very strong desire to get out of the house and head to a car event. Preferably, the season opener in South Jersey at the Atlantic City car auction and flea market. This year, the cold weather did not deter thousands of spectators and potential buyers from heading out to Atlantic City, N.J. The selection of cars was varied and there was a ride of almost every persuasion to bid on. The auction is also a social gathering where many enthusiasts get a chance to meet and greet one another after a long winter. The team of GPK Auctions, once again, got the season launched with another fine event that celebrated its 43rd year. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

It’s that time of year again when the swap meets start, last minute preparations are being made to your ride and schedules come out for all the cruises and shows in your area. Problems Yes folks, 2016 is here and many events are planned for this season. Please check out the great cruises and shows listed in our paper and don’t forget cliffscalendar.com on the ole inter-web. Many car participants over the years have had several questions as to where their entrance fee goes for the show attended, including those 50/50 chances that we all have bought at one time or another. Additionally, a statement I hear over and over is: “I spent a lot of money building this car, they should pay me to attend.” Well, Virginia, I won’t claim to have all the answers to these important questions, but I will do my best to explain car show politics 101. Let me start by saying that a car cruise or show is a production. That being said, all productions have expenses, some less, some more. Depending on the event you attend, that property you are parked on may be charging your host a fee for this show. Most shows and some cruises give out trophies, and there are insurance costs, door prizes, 50/50 tickets, DJ fees in some cases, and the list goes on. Part of your entrance fee is covering costs of a production, but most importantly, car clubs strive to earn enough to give to their charities. Car clubs are non-profit organizations whose sole purpose is to have fun events and raise money for their favorite charities. However, expenses are a fact of life and in order to produce another event costs for the previous event must be covered. In a nut shell that’s why we can’t pay the car owner to show up, nor do any clubs that I know of twist anyone’s arm to show up at their event. Everyone has the right to pick and choose. Car clubs have preached many times to car participants: choose your events wisely, know where your entrance fee is going. Many so called “pop-up” events run by Tom, Dick and Harry should be questioned as to where your entrance fee is going. There are those among us who may just be hosting an event for their own profit. I can’t tell you who these people are, but I can tell you to try your best to support as many local established car club events where they will tell you what happens to your entrance fee. That ever-enticing 50/50 chance that you may purchase at a car show also has only one purpose in mind – charity. You all know how 50/50 works: winner gets half of total collected and host gets the other half. Simple, right? Wrong. Not if the host’s half goes in their pocket. My club has a poster, and at every event we host we show where our collected money goes. Most clubs I know have a website which includes a list of their charities that they donate too. Everyone has their favorite events marked on the calendar for the 2016 season. Your support is what keeps these events happening, so just make sure your donation to the next event you attend has a meaning. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Let’s remember that. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

Cylinder Head Rebuilding, Crankshaft Grinding, Connecting Rods, Flywheels, Engine Balancing, Crack Checking Car enthusiast Brenda Burns celebrates the pin-up style of the classic car era.

Pin-up Models:

A Classic era is reborn

I was born into a family that loved cars. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time at Atco raceway. As a matter of fact my father still races his ’55 Chevy. He also built a ’63 Power Wagon truck that I started taking to car shows. Eventually I became a member of the Classic Cruisers of South Jersey Car Club. Well, I soon found myself getting bored, as many of us do, just sitting behind my truck at the car events. This led me to start dressing up pin-up style as was common in the 1950s. Immediately this style got the attention of men and women. The women really loved my clothes – especially my shoes. The guys liked the clothing style because it matched the era of the cars. I soon realized that pin-up girls were a special addition to the entertainment and fun of the car shows. As time went on, pin-up pageants began to make their way into many car shows. Some of the car events have also begun to advertise for pin-up girls to come and get involved with the shows. The pin-up style, for me, is the 1950s-era dress. You can also dress up in jeans that are cuffed at the bottom and a tank top with a Dickies brand button down shirt. Ladies can also wear a vintage dress which would be a wiggle dress, swing dress or pencil shirt. Some talented ladies event make their own era creations. Make-up that is period-correct would be big eye lashes, winged eyeliner and red lips. A vintage hair style of smooth upswept rolls, baby bangs and perfectly coiled locks topped off with a big flower or bow fits in with the pin-up fashion. Some women of today have begun to really modernize themselves with the pin-up look. The style fits all shapes and sizes as well as all ages and the “tattoo” pin-up is now a part of this culture. Finding a photographer that you are comfortable with is important. A good photographer brings out the best features in a pin-up model. I happen to use a photography company called Road Dog Photo. Check out their work at roaddogphoto@verizon.net. Their photography is really great if you are going to enter pageants since many pageants prefer to see your photograph before you enter a show. The South Jersey area and surroundings have a lot of car shows. I’d love to see the pinup style grow as much as the car shows have. It’s a fun way to enjoy a bygone era and it’s all done in good taste. Pin-up modeling is fun and I hope many ladies in the car community get involved in it.

Reflections of a Car Enthusiast DJ

T

The Chapel Cruise There are many places that have cruises and each event has its own distinct personality. There are cruises at restaurants, automobile junk yards and in a cemetery. In a cemetery? Well, not in a cemetery, but on the empty field next to one adjacent to the grounds. Thus is born the Siloam Cemetery Associations’ Chapel Cruise. This cruise was a fundraiser to help build up funds for the century-old stained glass windows of the chapel located in the cemetery. The grounds were established in 1864 and are steeped in history. This cruise wasn’t a Halloween event – just a cruise complete with a DJ, food, door prizes, historical tours and displays, and some trophies. Nearly 90 cars and cycles came out to this Vineland event. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

he visit of Pope Francis to our fine country back in September reminded me of the many charities that car and bike clubs support. Many of us have our chosen charities whom we support. Some support specific disease-fighting charities, while some support hospitals for children. Car and bike clubs are primarily made up of ordinary hard working people like you and I. We are all basically humanitarians. Many of us pull wrenches and speak fanatically of our vehicles. In a few words, we’re all in this hobby to enjoy and help others. If you are a spectator at a car or bike show, I’d bet if you were to ask the members of a promoting club, they will quickly and easily tell you the charity they support. My point is: buy the chances they sell and participate in the silent auctions especially if the money goes to a fine cause. One of my fondest moments in the hobby happened recently. I teamed with Ricky Fiocchi at his Uncle Ricky’s Bar and Grille in Vineland, N.J., and we independently raised money for a local girl who is a cancer patient. We donated to a local girl, not a large charity, even though both ideas are good to do. To see the smile on that girl’s face when the donation was made was priceless. Her grandparents were ecstatic and my feelings were right there with them. So remember: if you are participating or just walking around looking at the bikes or cars, dig deep into your wallets for a charitable cause, because you will be helping someone less fortunate. Times can be hard on everyone, especially those individuals with medical issues. We car cruisers can make a difference. As Dirty Harry would say, donate to a good cause to “MAKE THEIR DAY.” Happy motoring, Uncle Al WVLT Cruisin’ 92.1 Al Snyder is the host of “Uncle Al’s Music Warehouse” on oldies station Cruisin’ 92.1 FM every Friday night at 11 p.m. and is a certifiable car show DJ and car guy with his 1995 Vette.

CRUISING 101 Hi Gang,

SHIFTINGGEARS

Welcome to the new show season of 2016. It will be a very busy season indeed – the calendar is filling up and we’re all waiting to get out, although the winter wasn’t too brutal with some 60 degree temps around the holidays – although by saying that we’ll probably have a freak blizzard in April. This is the 26th season for the magazine, and at the recent “inter-club” I took a look back, way back. When the mag was created there were only about 30 clubs, and they were spread out. Shows were put on without many problems. Presently the magazine represents 300 to 400 organizations, which inevitably creates change. The clubs don’t have the final say like they used to; now big businesses, or cities, dictate the how, the when, the time and more. Yes the clubs do all the work, but Big Brother is watching. Many events have ceased operation because after a couple of years, somebody notices how good the club is doing, and bingo, it becomes “let’s raise the cost or ‘donation’ so there are no winners.” And nothing can be done, because with the way things are now, there is always “someone” there to take your place. Then again, talk to club presidents, and ask how often some business will call and want a show “next weekend.” Yes, it does happen that way! Any wonder your presidents walk around mumbling? In the eastern United States there are car shows every night of the week, if you don’t mind traveling a bit, with five to six shows most weekends. Sorry if I rambled on. A thought for clubs: your members are not getting younger, so what you allow at your events may have something to do with whether or not an event will grow or stagnate or cease. Organizations have got to get the younger generation interested in what we do, not only in the vehicles but the games we play at some events.

See you at the events,

I

would assume that many fellow car enthusiasts have passed the greater part of their television entertainment time this winter looking at car-related shows. Let’s face it. Some of us just can’t play with cars because we may not have a heated garage. Heat was something I should have installed in my man cave a long time ago. So, when we need a car fix to get us motivated for the upcoming season it’s off to see the boobtube. Oh, and by the way, being retired makes the TV even more of a staple in my daily winter routine. So now as a television/car show aficionado, I feel that it’s time to give you my take on some of those shows that I have watched and give you my totally unprofessional thoughts on some of them and their content. Here we go… Chasing Classic Cars: Show host Wayne Carini has the uncanny knack of finding the most high dollar rides in the most not so common places. He finds a Stutz Bearcat that hasn’t been driven in 50 years in a garage that hasn’t been open since the Stone Age. My Take: How does he do it? The only I thing a find in a barn are rodents and rusty tools. Overhaulin’: Chip Foose and the gang fool some lucky guy or gal and take their car for a week or so and transform it into a frame off, high dollar, drop dead beautiful ride. My take: If I thought I was going to be overhauled it would probably be a scam and my car would come back with brush marks on the paint. All Girls Garage: Three young ladies work on cars that show they can do just as well as their male counterparts in working on any type of ride. My Take: Where were these types of women when I was getting into the hobby? Imagine your girlfriend saying, “Hon, I changed the rear gears for you and beefed up the transmission.” Gas Monkey Garage: Richard Rawlins and Aaron Kauffman have the most unorthodox way of approaching a build. Never a dull moment. My take: How does Richard rate a beer assistant? Graveyard Carz: Mark Worman is the most knowledgeable Mopar fanatic that I have ever seen. He looks a VIN number and deciphers it on the spot from memory. He rattles off statistics on everything Mopar. He knows paint codes, dates and everything in between. My take: I wonder if he knows his social security number, telephone and house number? Truth be known, I can’t even remember my wedding anniversary date. Barret-Jackson Auction: The mind and wallet-boggling world of car auctions. This auction has some rides that go for prices that rival many small town budgets. The fever pace of bidding is really amazing to see. My Take: I’d be the guy at this auction to scratch his nose and the auctioneer looks at me and screams “SOLD! To the gentleman for two million dollars!” I’d then be carted off for making a false bid. Note: I could never figure out how these guys place a bid with minimum movement. These are just a few of the shows on TV, and thank heaven we have them. I always wished I was the lucky one to be given a free pass to have my cars refinished or sold for enough money to by a small country. But you know? I have fun watching these shows during my lack of car activity in the winter and all season long. Their diversity is what makes them interesting to watch. Now where is my remote… Department of the New Year: New events come out each year. Know their rules before you participate. Department of Beauty: I’ve been schooled on the concept of the pin-up model and their roles at shows. It’s cool and I applaud the ladies for bringing back yesterday. Here we go into the new season. Have a safe and fun cruising season of 2016.
