THE FUTURE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE HOBBY Who will become its stewards? By Frank Adkins

T

he future of the automotive hobby is a frequent topic of discussion among car enthusiasts. If you look around at any well-established automotive event you will likely view a sea of gray hair. The stragglers at some of the cruises I attended more than 20 years ago used to hang out and talk cars late into the evening. I know—I was one. Today, many of those same folks leave in time to be home by dark. In the last year or two I have seen a sharp increase in the number of motorized scooters at these events. Of course I am happy to see these folks still enjoying the cars and the people connected to them, but it is a telling sign; we are all getting older. During the last year I have attended three funerals of friends in just one of the clubs in which my wife and I belong. At 51, I am one of the younger members of another club, and I have now belonged to that club for more than half of my life. I have been an elected officer in that group for a few years, but I wonder, who will take the reins when I’m ready to hand them off? Am I the last of a dying breed? Many of us worry about what will happen to our cars. More often than not, we seek vehicles like those we grew up with—those with which we forged memories, 6

either because we or our friends drove similar cars, or because we wanted a particular model but couldn’t afford it then. A few decades ago, Model T Fords were commonly sought after and restored. The law of supply and demand drove prices up, but nearly all of the folks who drove these cars in their youth have died off. Today, Model Ts have become surprisingly affordable. Many of the cars from the ‘30s and ‘40s that were lovingly restored a generation ago have now been updated with modern suspensions, brakes, drivelines, power steering, and air conditioning by subsequent owners. Today these cars are coveted by street rod builders, which has helped them maintain strong values, but the number of those who drove them when they were new and who toil to maintain their originality is dwindling. Many of the noteworthy cars of the ‘50s are commanding strong prices today, but I fear that they, too, will soon go the way of the Model T. My father drove a ’57 Plymouth Fury in his youth, and although he always dreamed of owning another, he is now 75 and is no longer driving. His situation is typical of many who came of age during the era of fins and chrome. Of course, the iconic cars of that decade, such as the quintessential “tri-five” Chevrolets and the ’57

and ’58 Plymouths, immortalized by Stephen King’s Christine, will remain popular for the foreseeable future, but many others are almost certain to fall from favor as those in that age group succumb to their years. But I have long-believed that as a whole, even the iconic cars—those that somehow manage to capture the admiration of people who were born years after these cars had been relegated to the back rows of used car lots across America—will likely not survive indefinitely in original form. Like today’s street-rodders, future automotive artist/builders will likely view clean ‘50s cars as blank canvases. Cars from the ‘60s and early ‘70s might break from that rule for a few reasons. First, the folklore of muscle cars has elevated them to superhero status. Second, nearly all of the great car chase movies and TV shows have transcended the generations and made certain models the stuff of widespread desire. This holds true for many of the more recent movies including The Fast and The Furious series, Deathproof, the remake of Gone in Sixty Seconds, and Drive Angry. Furthermore, these cars, especially convertibles, are still used in television commercials and music videos today. Third, for the last decade or more, numerous television shows have chronicled the restorations and builds of classic muscle-era American iron. These shows can be credited with generating interest in these cars among countless younger folks across America and beyond. Fourth, between 1974 and 1985 there simply weren’t many noteworthy performance cars rolling out of Detroit. Of course there were stand-outs such as Dodge’s Little Red Express truck and Pontiac’s Trans Am, but those are the exception and not the rule. Although the Camaro and Corvette soldiered on, arguably, future automotive historians will credit Ford’s port fuel injected 5.0 liter Fox body Mustang with returning performance to the hands of the average guy. Today, few people are restoring Ford Granadas, Plymouth Volare station wagons with faux woodgrain, or other forgettable cars built between 1974 and 1985. Due in part to the decade-long gap in exciting offerings, I believe muscle-era cars will remain desirable for years to come even to today’s 30- and 40-somethings who didn’t have the opportunities to forge early memories with them. So, what about today’s youth? Where do they fit into the automotive scene? On any given day one can see lowered imports with loud “fart pipes” protruding from below the rear bumper darting through traffic as well as turbo diesel trucks “rolling coal,” belching thick plumes of black smoke when accelerating. Personally, neither genre appeals to me any more than my jacked-up Dart with its loud exhaust appealed to our neighbors when I was a teen, but I have come to respect the owners of these vehicles as fellow car enthusiasts. The truth is, they are today’s hot-rodders. They are our future. I have been blessed in that after working for decades as an auto mechanic/ technician, I now teach automotive technology. This keeps me in contact with today’s up and coming automotive enthusiasts. In preparing this article I conducted an informal survey of my current students, graduates, and others under the age of 30. Yes, they are the texting, Internet-surfing, X-box playing millennials. I asked what cars they were most passionate about. I wanted to know whether they preferred them stock or modified, and if modified, what sorts of alterations they liked. I also asked about their interest in ‘60’s, ‘70s, and ‘80s cars, and whether they preferred them restored to original or modified. I surveyed both in person and via Facebook. Their answers may surprise you. I was encouraged to hear from so many young women. They responded with more passion than many of their male counterparts. Most respondents felt that cars

with pedigree—real GTOs, Road Runners, Camaro SSs, etc. should be restored to original condition. Lesser models such as Tempests, Satellite, and six-cylinder cars begged to be modified to their owners’ tastes. Overall, the group of respondents gave answers that were as varied as they are individually. Trey replied, “’60s and early ‘70s muscle cars. Stock appearance and a little work under the hood for the sleeper kind of vehicle.” Alicia said, “’70s, slightly modified under the hood, but with a stock body.” Michael said, “’60s to mid-‘70s anything. Tastefully modified with periodappropriate modifications. I love family cars, especially if they are pulling a vintage camper from the ‘50s or ‘60s. I like the odd balls, station wagons, sport four-doors, Suburbans, panel trucks and ramp trucks. I also have a sweet spot for V-Dub diesels.” Scott drives an ’84 Monte Carlo SS with a transplanted Chevy LS engine and engine management system. He cites good drivability, performance, and economy as his car’s attributes. Although he appreciates Wankel and Subaru “boxer” engines, he vows, “Before I die I want a ‘64 Lincoln with a ‘Benz V-12 crammed into it.” Susan said, “I prefer older than ‘50s. I have a model TT truck, a ’30-something Buick, and some various other things. I hate seeing an old car turned into something not original. I like them to be restored, not altered. I also like muscle cars, again, restored and not altered. Probably my most favorite thing is old trucks—like ‘60s and earlier pickups, grain trucks, or big trucks. I really like when someone finds an old truck that still has some paint on it and just clear coats it to preserve the originality, especially if it had a name on the side or logo.” By contrast, Liz, an avid autocross competitor, said, “The right balance of performance and practicality is key to me, and I’m also on a pretty tight budget. So right now, 2000-2010 is where my eyes are mostly because they tend to be cheaper to acquire and maintain, and spare parts are usually readily available. I also still need any car I autocross to be daily-drivable, so few modifications. When I get the time, cash, and driveway space, I’d love a couple toys, but on the other hand I wouldn’t want to buy a classic car I couldn’t still drive with reasonable frequency. We had a ‘67 Le Mans that mostly just sat in the garage for my working memory of it, and I don’t really see the point. It’s important to me to get some use (and maybe even some fun) out of everything I think is worth putting time and money into.” Although nearly all of those who responded were interested in older vehicles, most cited expense as the reason they either did not own or were not actively pursuing such cars. They simply cannot afford them, so they seek lower priced alternatives. That said, one of my current students owns two ’73 Firebirds and another owns a late ‘70s Chevy 4X4 truck and an ’80 Z-28. Keep in mind, they were born in the mid-‘90s! In further discussion I asked why so few were involved in car shows and cruises. The answers varied, but three stood out. First, many have work conflicts. The traditional Monday through Friday 40-hour work week is becoming a thing of the past, especially for young people. Second, most of these kids grew up with electronics. They didn’t have mechanical toys, including erector sets, and they didn’t build model cars. Thus, the progression to rebuilding bicycles, dirt bikes and go-carts, and finally cars was not set into motion. Third, many were raised by single mothers. They didn’t have the opportunity to spend Saturday mornings in the driveway with their fathers changing oil in the family car. Consequently, many discovered their automotive passion much later in life than those of previous generations. To ensure that our hobby thrives in the future, we need to accept and encourage today’s up and coming car enthusiasts. Long live the passion! 7

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

A Mediterranean Vacation? Car shows always have a special personality of their own, and the members of Saint Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church have created a cultural, festive vibe for their event. This show—the Gyro Fest and Car Show—was a cool blend of classic Greek food, hospitality and a classic American car show. The show, staged in the early part of autumn, saw great weather and a large turnout of rides. The aroma of traditional Greek cuisine and the slideshow in the dining hall made you feel like you just drove your ride to a Mediterranean town. Cruisin’ car show music as well as lots of trophies and door prizes made for a great car event that felt like going on vacation. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Wildwood Fall Classic Car Show Nearly everyone wants the cruising and show season to continue for as long as possible. So, having fun with the rides at one of New Jersey’s shore resorts adds extra icing on the cake. The city of Wildwood hosts an annual event on the boardwalk, called the Fall Classic Car Show. Just imagine nearly 1,000 cars from a multi-state area converging for several days of entertainment. To add more good vibrations to the event, a classic car auction is held at the Convention Hall on the boardwalk. The city also hosts one of the largest Irish fests in the country and the Seafarers Festival, too. With rides from every genre of car build to getting to see the top 40 cars on display in front of Convention Hall on Sunday, it’s a special automotive happening. By the way, you can even welcome this new season with the Wildwood Mother’s Day Spring Car Show in May. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Fun Run to Ocean City, N.J.

The Pumpkin Run

For the past nine years, members of the South Jersey Cruisers Association car group have continued a South Jersey automobile tradition of greeting the autumn season with a run to Ocean City, N.J., in October. Cruisers assemble in Vineland and take the scenic route to this Jersey shore town. This past year, 125 cruisers participated in a picture-perfect autumn trip along the back roads of southern New Jersey. The changing colors of the leaves and the bright sunshine made for a colorful caravan of cruisers. Many people along the route stopped and stared at this rolling car event. Car guys and gals now enjoy cruises and shows well into the year and have made autumn an extension of summer.

Wow. The only way to describe Fleming’s 21st Annual Pumpkin Run is like this: You had to be there. I’m still stoked about it so I’m going to just give you bullet points: 1. Weather: Perfect. 2. Cars: 2,500 to 3,000. 3. Spectators: shoulder-to-shoulder. 4. Things to see: trucks, cars, museums, food court, vendors, pumpkin canon and more. 5. It’s in English Creek, N.J. 6. Put it on your calendar for this year. 7. Did I say “wow”?

INCH FORD REARS

A Winter Project Some car enthusiasts take the winter to relax and regroup from the busy warm-weather season of going to many car events. For people like me, mild winter days are a time to work on my cars and for some car enthusiasts, it’s the perfect time to get the heat in the garage cranked up and work on that project with a warm-weather debut in mind. One dedicated car enthusiast who enjoys the challenge of a winter garage build and gets the heater cranking in the garage is Dennis Dase. Dennis was kind enough to show me his Model A Ford street rod project and explain some of his modifications. This ride has a metal body with a steel roof insert to replace the soft top and Dennis chose to shave the drip rails off the side. A ’32 Ford grill will see duty to grace the front end. Plans call for a small block Ford for motorvation and goodies like heat and air conditioning. The car had a stock frame that is boxed in with a rack and pinion steering set-up and many more personal touches that will be crafted to this ride. Yes, winter is a time for some cruisers to relax—and some cruisers to relax building their dream ride. By the way, like many garage builders, Dennis (pictured on the right) has a good friend, Jim Solomon, ready to lend a hand and provide garage scene managerial support. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Hey Gang, Can you believe it’s 2017 already, though my cars are now 50 years old and still going strong. We are opening another page on the cruising season with many events planned. I suppose you can start marking your calendar for your favorite shows and cruises, but take a look around, too; there may be some new events that might pique your interest as well. Check out the events listed in this edition. I would like to give huge kudos to Cliff Shield, the brains behind Cliff’s Calendar online. Cliff has provided cruisers far and wide with the opportunity to check his website for all the latest shows and cruises week by week and month by month for years, which he does for free. Cliff has made the tough decision not to continue with his website due to health reasons. I personally want to thank Cliff for all the years of service to the car community with his listings of events. I’ve known Cliff for many years, and even when he wasn’t feeling all that well he would still be posting events to his website for all to enjoy. Cliff has said that if anyone is interested in carrying on the site to contact him, and he will help them continue where he left off. Cliff will be missed on the internet and we wish him all the best in the future. Speaking of being missed, Gerry Fox, long-time member of the Nostalgia Knights car club, passed away in December. Gerry was secretary of our club for many years, a very active and dedicated member and a lover of Pontiacs. The car community will surely miss having Gerry at the shows and cruises she truly loved attending. I know many of worked on new projects this past winter and if you’re like me, it has been several winters, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It seems like it takes so long to invest and build the car or truck of your choice. When you add up the shop hours and tally up the receipts you may want to scratch your head. $50 here, $100, $2,000—you know where I’m going with this. Frankly, though, that’s just the parts cost; most of us won’t even factor in the countless hours of labor along with the cuts, bruises, bumps, burns and so on. Now take a look at some of the cars crossing the auction block. You know the auctions, Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, Silver, the list goes on. The first few auction days are what I call the “normal bidders” day. Guys and gals like you and me are looking for the car of their dreams to actually drive and not just put in a museum. When you see a turnkey Camaro, Boss 302, or maybe some Mopars go for under $20,000, you have to ask yourself the question: Is all that expense and garage time worth it? We all know that those cars cost a lot more than the selling price to build by today’s standards. Most of you love the build factor, and it needs to continue, but as our generation gets older the build factor becomes more of a duty rather than a labor of love. Now is the time when we need to pass on our excitement of the build to the next generation. We’re not here forever. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun! Let’s all remember that. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

This has been one long and cold winter. Many of us are and have been working on our cars in the garage getting them ready for the upcoming cruising season. My trusty yellow truck does not seem to want to be ready to make it for the cruises this year. But I do have another truck in the making for the season, and I can’t wait to debut it at the Uncle Rickey’s car show. I’ll be there with my fellow pin-up gals, too. As a matter of fact, local DJ Uncle Al Snyder has dubbed my pin-up team the M80s. Yours truly and the M80s would like to offer to come to your car events and help give out trophies and also offer to help raise funds for charity. We are not about making money for ourselves—we are about the fun and friendships within our hobby. You can contact me at Trixie Cherrybomb on Facebook or email me at shot.gun.12@hotmail.com for more information. One of the first shows that we are going to participate in is going to be held on Saturday, April 1 (no joke), 10 a.m. at the Flying W airport and resort in Medford, N.J. It’s put on by Dead Rodz Revival and it has lots of traditional and contemporary vehicles. Come on by and check out lots of pin-ups, burlesque, a freak show and really great Rockabilly music. Let the car show season begin!

hope the winter has been healthy and happy for all you car people. I have to ask: Are your car projects complete? If all your car events are not in the final stages, it is time to finalize the last details. Things to think about: Tie up all the loose ends, so to speak, plan and attend the car conferences, distribute your flyers and set up all your advertising. Additional outlets for networking are the two retired-car-enthusiast breakfast events. One is an invitational gathering at Black Olive Restaurant in Vineland, while the other is the third Tuesday at P&B diner in Glassboro, N.J., that is open to all car people. That one starts at 9 a.m. Other thoughts on event prep: Do you have your entertainment in place? Entertainment comes in various forms and I am not just talking music. Do you have a variety of refreshments? Do you have activities to keep people of all ages interested? Is your event priced appropriately? Are your members/workers sociable and helpful with the spectators? These are some of the things that can cause complaints if not done correctly. I do hear lots of comments from spectators about car events and want to pass this on to you. Is there a benefit or charity that your event is supporting? Get the info out there if it is. Remember keep your event spectator-friendly. The public is as important to the success of a car event as much as the car people who show up. When events are friendly it helps our hobby flourish. Remember, your event could create interest in our hobby if done right and might create a new member for your club. I have been involved with events for over 20 years. From my experience I hope some of these suggestions help. Happy motoring, Uncle Al WVLT Cruisin’ 92.1 Al Snyder is the host of “Uncle Al’s Music Warehouse” on oldies station Cruisin’ 92.1 FM every Friday night at 11 p.m. and is an area car show DJ as well as a certifiable Corvette owner.

Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix

he inaugural Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix was held September 24, 2016 on the streets of Coatesville, Pa. Organizers and participants conspired to create a spectacle reminiscent of races that occurred on city streets more than half a century ago. Open-wheeled racers, vintage European sports cars, a smattering of American racecars, and vintage motorcycles all competed on a 2.2 mile course which included a portion of U.S. Route 30. Chicanes constructed of hay bales kept speeds somewhat reasonable on the straight-aways, while ninety-degree corners (six in all) added to the challenge. Coatesville City Manager Mike Trio is credited with hatching the idea for the event in conjunction with the town’s revitalization efforts. Initially he envisioned modern-day Indy style cars, but upon enlisting the help of racer Dick Miles, owner of Iron Oxide Engineering and Transportation, located in Coatesville, it soon became clear that Indy cars were far too fast for the town streets. Instead, Miles suggested pre-1965 racecars and motorcycles. The majority of the field consisted of pre-1965 vehicles, although ultimately, concessions were made to include a handful of later vehicles of particular interest. Entrants were divided into four groups. Group One was for cars that were deemed too valuable to risk being damaged in a racing mishap. The drivers of these cars drove spirited pace laps. Group Two consisted of racecars making laps at speed. Group Three was comprised of pre-1930 open-wheel cars also being

driven at speed. Group Four was for motorcycles. Drivers in each group were started at ten-second intervals to minimize passing and to promote safety. Each run consisted of three laps at speed, followed by a cool-down lap. The groups ran three rotations throughout the day. Although this was intended to be more of a gentlemen’s race than an allout speed event, during the drivers’ meeting Miles conceded that he and town officials were concerned that keeping speeds in check would be tough given a typical racer’s competitive nature. “You put a racer in a racecar and tell him he’s in a race, and then you ask him not to go as fast as he can,” Miles said. The crowd erupted in laughter. Still, safety was emphasized, because the streets were lined with spectators. When the checkered flag fell for the last time that day, nobody had been hurt. In all, more than 60 vehicles competed. Of course, the Coatesville Grand Prix could not have happened without the help of approximately 200 volunteers, including 60 from area police departments and the county sheriff’s department. The 2017 running of the Coatesville Vintage Grand Prix is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23. See coatesvillegrandprix.com for more details. — Text by Frank Adkins, photos by Rob McCall 15

CRUISING 101 Hi Gang, Welcome to another season of Cruising. I’m looking forward to the start of the season and steady warm weather. I do want to thank all of the clubs that attended the 2017 Inter-Club Meeting —we had a great turnout. The 2017 season has some new problems though, and I will be first to admit I’m old-school. A growing trend has bought new “toys” into the mix, like new Camaros, Chargers, Challengers and Mustangs—new muscle cars. Plus, there are a lot of imports boasting some high horses. Now, let’s think here: If I have a ‘69 Camaro, do I want to go up against a 2017 Camaro? Granted, there are some very nice ‘69 Camaros out there, but we are still talking almost a half-century newer. But regardless, newer cars must be allowed into the events, and classes must be made, because we must capture the interest of the new generation. Otherwise, the toys will gather the dust of time. I just suggest giving it some thought. Discuss it within your clubs. A few new classes might not hurt. It may even get you some new members and ideas. Don’t forget Salem County Fairgrounds’ March 26 event. Bring your fliers to the Cruising Magazine Table—we’ll make room! See ya at the events!

ell, here it is—the dawn of a new cruising season. As I waited for the winter of 2016 to slowly ebb away, I thought: What is it that makes car enthusiasts look forward to the start of the season? So, I decided to commission a world-famous study “Ben Notaro Institute of Finding Out About Things That Most People Can Figure Out for Themselves.” I canvassed car types and asked them key questions to acquire data so that I can present answers to you, the Cruising Magazine readers. Here are the top 10 reasons we car enthusiasts go bonkers waiting for the season to kick into full gear: 1. Seeing, once again, old buddies that you mainly only see during cruises and shows. 2. Socializing—catching up on the latest car information and who’s building what. 3. Seeing new builds. Every year there are many new cars that join the scene. It’s like looking for Santa with his new sleigh. 4. Getting out of the house. If you do not have a working area in a heated garage, the winter months will drive you up a wall while your ride just sits. 5. Cruising as a group. There is something about a group of cruisers who ride together —like a caravan of pioneers heading to new lands.

Larry Lazareff Cell: 856-297-5012 after 6pm • larrylazareff@gmail.com

6. Waiting for that special show or cruise that you are most fond of. It’s like waiting for Christmas, your birthday or special celebration. 7. Waiting for the latest issue of Cruising Magazine so you can circle the events that will now fill your car calendar. 8. Reading Shifting Gears column so you can be enlightened by a person who commissions studies like this for your reading enjoyment. 9. Sitting in an easy chair behind you car talking to fellow car types because you realize that doing that in an unheated garage does not have the same effect in the winter. 10. It’s truly about the fun of sharing a hobby with great people.

For those who need to send me information, please forward to:

Larry Lazareff 1920 S. Delsea Dr. Unit #6 Vineland, NJ 08360

So, now you have it. Survey complete, now I’m going to simply relax and wait for the first big car gathering to hurry up and get here. It’s been a long winter. Department of Congratulations: To CM’s Larry Lazareff on retiring from the daily work force. Enjoy your retirement, my friend. Department of Fun: I’ll see you at the “Brews and Cruise” on April 30 to raise a flagon on high to a great cruising season. Department of Labor: Cruising and shows are always a labor of love and having fun.
