Linking Grandfathers and Grandsons Generations connect and bond through car hobby By Frank Adkins 6
A
s a grandfather I often find myself wondering what caused many in our generation to become “car people.” What caused the car bug to stir within us? Was it something that we were born with? Was it the result of a chain of events or experiences that took place early in our lives, during those years when we were most impressionable? Was it inspired by a role model who was also infatuated with cars? Or was it some combination of all these factors? Which leads me to ask: how can we inspire future generations to appreciate the car hobby? How can we encourage them to cultivate their interest in automobiles? My wife and I now have three grandchildren, all boys, ranging in age from newborn to seven. The older two are brothers, Michael and Riley, who are inseparable. We take them to car shows and cruises a couple times a year, and even though their experiences have been similar, their reactions to the cars are quite different. Michael, the older brother, grows bored and fidgety. He seems to reach his limit within half an hour. But Riley, who is now four, can’t get enough. He asks me to pick him up so he can see the engines and interiors of nearly every car we see. He is enamored by the shapes of the bodies, the glisten of the wheels, gauges, and other ancillary add-ons, and the sanitary engine compartments. Flashing back to one of my earliest memories at two years old, I vaguely remember taking a walk with my grandfather near my grandparents’ home in Frederick, Md., one evening in the fall of 1967. My grandparents lived in what I remember as an upscale apartment complex with lots of grass, trees, a covered bridge, and a three-sided community-shared parking garage. My grandfather had recently purchased a new Plymouth Belvedere I four-door sedan with just an AM radio, automatic transmission, and no other options. Grad, as I called him, had the space at the far right end of the garage and that’s where I remember him parking the Belvedere. He passed away in January 1968. After his death my grandmother learned to drive. She was 65 at the time, and she drove the Belvedere for the next twenty years, peering over its steering wheel, and never complaining about its manual steering or brakes. As a child I loved the lines of the Plymouth, the layout of its dash, and the styling of its one-year-only dog dish hubcaps. By the time I reached driving age in 1981 I had already come to appreciate its low mileage, great condition, and originality. Gram hung up the keys for good in 1988 at the age of 85. Three years later she gave the car to my father, and I acquired it from him in 1992. No doubt, the presence of this Belvedere throughout my childhood and the happy memories associated with it sparked my love of its high performance sister, the 1967 Belvedere GTX. My grandfather had been a very practical man, as evidenced by the short list of options he’d selected for the Belvedere. He was neither a car enthusiast nor a high
performance junkie, but if he had been, he might have chosen a GTX, and it’s likely he would have optioned it similarly. Last November my wife and I acquired a low option GTX. It was originally equipped with the base 440 Super Commando engine, standardissued column shifted Torqueflite automatic transmission (the available four-speed was an extra-cost option), steel wheels, manual steering, manual drum brakes, and an AM radio. With so few check boxes having been selected on its order form, on some level I feel that this car pays homage to my grandfather. Its condition is less than perfect, but it was priced within our reach. For the next month I worked to correct a number of minor issues in preparation to have it inspected and registered in Delaware. One weekend Michael and Riley stayed with us. Among the activities we had planned was a Saturday night trip to the Ocean City, Md., Festival of Lights, an annual tradition for us. We returned home late that night and promptly put the boys to bed. Early Sunday morning I was heading out to the garage alone to work on the GTX for an hour or two before breakfast while my wife and the boys slept, but Riley had other ideas. He was wide awake and wanted to go to the garage with me. Reluctantly, I agreed. I typically encourage the boys to come to the garage, but only when I can give them my full attention and supervision, not while I’m working. As I fiddled with the choke on the GTX, Riley scaled the oddly spaced steps leading to the loft. I warned him not to touch anything, to which he replied, “I’m not, Gampop.” Nothing crashed to the floor, so I left him alone to take in the sights of fenders, doors, dashboards, seats, and steering wheels. Sometime later he came downstairs and wandered about the cars that lay dormant under their covers. Then he stood back and watched me work. He appeared awestruck, studying me as I worked for quite some time without uttering a word. I sensed in him the same feeling I remember having years ago while straddling my bike on the sidewalk of our suburban community and watching the neighbors work on their cars in their driveways. I pretended not to notice Riley, for I didn’t want to interrupt his thoughts as he processed all that he was seeing. Instead, I let him savor the moment. Furthermore, I wanted to show him that I trusted him to follow garage etiquette and not tamper with things. He did not disappoint me. Finally he approached the GTX. He studied the lines in the grille up close, then raised his arm and polished the headlights with his sleeve. When he was finished he gave the fender an affectionate pat. And so it is that another 1967 Plymouth provides a link between a grandfather and his grandson. It’s too early to say, but one day Riley might be the keeper of his grandfather’s GTX.
I sensed in him the same feeling I remember having years ago while straddling my bike on the sidewalk of our suburban community and watching the neighbors work on their cars in their driveways.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS
6th Annual FUN RUN 1 Car enthusiasts work on their rides to enjoy the season of shows and cruises where they can sit and relax and talk to their fellow car owners. There are also events where cruisers can get into their rides for the enjoyment of cruising down the road. One such event is staged by the South Jersey Cruisers Association car group. This group of cruisers is not a traditional club, it’s a bunch of car enthusiasts who just have events to enjoy the hobby their way. The FUN RUN 1 is a cruise to Ocean City, NJ, where the cars stage at a local parking lot and at a prearranged time caravan to the shore. This year saw over 230 rides of all persuasions come out to travel and enjoy an autumn day that was full of sunshine. This is what our hobby is all about. It’s about using your rides while relaxing at a show or enjoying the open road. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Winter Respite in Atlantic City This past winter has been a real tough one for car enthusiasts to get a break and air out the ride on a decent day. Truth is there were too few breaks in the cold and snow. That need to enjoy a car activity in the dead of winter has been nourished for 41 years with the Atlantic City Car Show and Auction. The AC car auction had nearly 1,000 rides of all makes and models go on the block for bidders to compete for a sale. Cars from classic rods to muscles cars and everything in between were available. Throw in a lot of venders as well as meeting up with many of your fellow car enthusiasts and you know that the spring part of the cruising season isn’t too far away. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
The Race of Gentlemen
As the summer of 2013 wound down, car guys and gals got into the “second half” of summer after Labor Day. One event that celebrates the end of one part of the car season and helps usher in the next chapter of car fun is in Ocean City, NJ: the 39th Annual South Shore Rod Run. Each September the South Jersey Street Rod Association and the city of Ocean City hold this multi-day car event that features rods, classics and muscle cars from the Tri-state area. The show hosted over 160 fine rides displayed on the boardwalk in plenty of good weather. Like many events, this show had some great entertainment, a participants’ pizza party and, of course, a few days at the shore.
This contributor has covered his fair share of shows and cruises over the years. I’ve been to events that were held at places that were not your typical locales for car shows and the like. I believe the neat thing about all events is that each location has its own personality. Now, I also have been to a few drag strips when the need for speed was on my agenda. This brings me to a place where a group of racers (gentlemen) got together for a nostalgic drag race at the Jersey shore. As a matter of fact, it was held on the Jersey shore. The Oilers Car Club from the northern part of the state held their second annual Race of Gentlemen down in the southern half of the state on the beach of Wildwood, NJ. This eight-mile drag race featured cars and cycles that were 1930 or older. Drag racing on the beach, rock–a-billy music, starting cars with a checkered flag and vintage iron made for a trip back to racing’s early days. The roar of flatheads and cycle engines created the perfect ambience for a day that was truly a race of gentlemen.

Louis Benvenuti, Jr., in his new Vette go cart, circa 1976
Brother and sister, Louis and Brooke Benvenuti, get to enjoy their special 1963 Corvette.
Cruising in a Smaller Scale Back in the day, if you were lucky enough to have a go cart, that was your first step in getting involved with cars. When the restoration hobby started to develop in the Corvette market, the specialty Vette go cart was an offering for some lucky child to receive. As I recall, there were several body styles you could purchase. Now, this is a personal story for me as to Vette go carts. My first classic car was/is my 1963 Corvette. I purchased the car in 1974 and have kept it since. It was the family’s introduction to my hobby. About that time my Dad wanted to get his grandson a car like “Uncle Ben’s.” Dad saw a go cart that resembled my ’63 in a Corvette parts catalog. My father not only ordered that car for my nephew, but also had it painted to match the color of my ride. Fast forward to 2014 and my little nephew is now a grown man with a family of his own and his two children are now ready to enjoy a special car. Yep, it’s the 1963 Vette go cart you see above. It has been upgraded with a better motor and a safety switch, but it still has the original body, paint and even the tires. My great niece and great nephew are now launched into the world of cruising from a gift to their dad from his grandfather from 40 years ago. Seeing that small ride brings back many fond memories and makes me happy that it is still creating new ones. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

A ‘Glass’ Act Mention the word Corvette to car owners and you may hear comments ranging from sleek to fast to made with fiberglass. Vettes have had a mystique almost from the beginning of their production. The first ones made in 1953 were not well received because of their weak engine and somewhat Spartan amenities. Then the V8 gets slipped into this ride and presto: instant zoom power. The Corvette came of age. Over the years the Corvette has evolved into a world-class ride that seems to have it all; power, style and lots of high-tech goodies to make you nice and comfy. Even their bodies have evolved from the traditional fiberglass material to new composites. Check out a few of these rides and you just might catch Corvette fever. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Daytona 500 is a great example of pure speed and an adrenalin rush for car enthusiasts to watch vehicles duke it out on a roundy-round track. It’s a typical American way of enjoying cars in their best forum…on the race track. The New Jersey Motor Sports Park located in Millville, NJ, has a volunteer group called the Green Flag Committee. This team of enthusiasts hosted the Daytona 500 Party and car show at the race track. The participants came out to enjoy a few courtesy laps around the track, a party celebrating the “500” and being a part of an event that raises money to purchase new coats for children. As a matter of fact, the three winners of the car show turned around and donated their cash prizes to the Green Flag’s coat drive. Now that’s typical car guy and gal generosity. Check out the New Jersey Motor Sports Park’s various events on their website at www.njmsp.com. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Terry Hall
Frostbite Cruise One event that lets us know that it’s closer to winter is the Frostbite Cruise. This cruise is the product of the South Jersey Cruisers Association car group. This nontraditional organization has staged this event for the past four years. From a humble beginning of a hundred or so cars, this cruise now draws over 500 rides that cruise from Pennsylvania, Delaware and South Jersey. Like good cruises everywhere, a DJ filled the cool air with warm music and since this was held at a great strip mall, the various restaurants gave the cruisers discounts on a wide variety of food to purchase and many great stores to do some shopping. The Acme Food Market in Vineland, NJ sponsored this pre-winter cruise that brought out car guys and gals to get more car fun in before it got so cold…well, cold enough to get frostbite.

The 2014 Interclub Meeting The 2014 Interclub meeting was held at the Christiana Hilton in Christiana, Del., on Feb. 23. The meeting brought out representatives from 40 cars clubs in the tri-state area. Cruising Magazine’s own Cruising 101 columnist Larry Lazareff was the master of ceremonies. Representatives brought their calendars for the upcoming car season to share their dates and to discuss issues that are related to the car hobby. The enthusiasm was high as members of the various car clubs announced their calendars for the 2014 season. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Art of the Build: Rods & Kustoms The AACA Museum hosts customized vehicle exhibit through April 27 A new exhibit at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum in Hershey, Pa., The Art of the Build: Rods & Kustoms, is a departure from exhibits that usually feature original vehicles or vehicles restored to original standards. This exhibit, running through Sunday, April 27, celebrates the cars and their creators who dared to be different, by individually customizing their vehicles. Some car owners take their custom-tailored visions to the limit, completely altering a vehicle in every possible way to create a true one-of-a-kind. Many consider the prestigious Ridler Award, given annually at the Detroit Autorama event, to be the highest honor for those in the rod and custom culture of the automotive hobby. The Art of the Build exhibit has a total of five Ridler contender cars: Kracklin Rose, The 69er, The Handyman, SwishAir and D-Ranged. Two of these contenders—DRanged and The Handyman—made it to the Great Eight which is the final round leading to The Ridler Award. Also included in the exhibit is a selection of artistically built novelty vehicles and unusual objects including a motorized bar stool and in-line roller skates from
the personal collection of Jo and John Robertson. The Robertsons have contracted such legends as George “the King of Kustomizers” Barris, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Boyd Coddington, Posies and other stars of rod and customizing fame to produce one of the most varied collections of such pieces ever assembled. They have a cross section of those builds to display along with numerous original car show photos, programs, circuit souvenirs, car club plaques, drag plates, and trophies. By treating each custom vehicle as a work of art, the museum views this display as an art installation, celebrating each item for what it has become. Each of the vehicles have been carefully planned and painstakingly transformed by hand to their current configuration. Metal has been shaped, worked and smoothed, leather has been dyed, stretched and sewn, paint has been sprayed, sanded and polished, and powertrains have been extensively upgraded by world-class craftsmen. The 2013 car season was filled with numerous cruises and car shows. There were also events for racing and putting your ride on a track—be it road racing or drag racing fun. With all of this activity going on, there was a need to get an early start on the 2014 season and representatives from the South Jersey area car groups got together to share their calendars for the new year. The meeting included a representative from each club invited. The information and discussion session was hosted by Bill Nese and Tony Sceia of the Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club and Cruising Classics Car Club, respectively. It’s a meeting to help coordinate events to avoid potential date conflicts as well as foster relations between clubs. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Cranking At Carlisle
Mark your calendar for these premier area events Brush off winter’s snow and prepare for spring at Carlisle. These four great events are filled with entertainment, music, vendors, and of course, automobiles. For more details on any of the events, please visit www.carlisleevents.com.
In addition to streamlined fees and an easier registration process, the FREE UNLESS SOLD policy allows for a consigner to offer a car with the assurance that if the car does not sell, all fees associated with the registration process are refunded.
Spring Carlisle, April 23-27 The automotive past, present and future are all showcased during Spring Carlisle, held Wednesday to Sunday, April 23-27, at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds. This year’s offering is part of a season-long 40th Anniversary celebration of Carlisle Events, and includes the ever-popular swap meet, car corral and two-day collector car auction. The swap meet and car corral take up almost all of the 8,100 available spaces on the grounds, while the auction, held at the nearby Carlisle Expo Center, hosts hundreds of cars available to the highest bidder. Best of all, the auction is presented by Carlisle Auctions, something that is new for 2014. The corral, auction and swap meet highlight an automotive timeline, via both cars and trucks in the physical form or through merchandise, memorabilia, accessories and collectibles. Cars within the car corral and auction run the gambit ranging from pre-war beauties to modern day muscle, all of which are for sale by owner. In between, enthusiasts can find hot rods, heavy duty and light duty trucks, rare and seldom seen rides—the list of available machines goes on and on. The auction is similar, too (see following event for more info).
Carlisle Performance & Style, May 10-11 Hot, fresh, stylish, slammed, and stanced—these words and many more will be uttered in 2014 as part of Carlisle Performance & Style. The caliber and quality of car coming to Carlisle will no doubt bring enthusiasts from far and wide to America’s Automotive Hometown to experience the hottest trends in the hobby today. Select special displays, plus interactivity in the form of autocross, drifting, burnouts and beauty will perfectly compliment this great lifestyle event Saturday to Sunday, May 10-11.
Carlisle Auctions, April 24-25 As part of the auctions and presentation by Carlisle Auctions, enthusiasts who enjoy these types of happenings, either as a buyer, seller or spectator, will enjoy a more streamlined process. The process includes uniform fees for buyers and sellers, the new and hugely popular FREE UNLESS SOLD policy and cars offered via a SPOTLIGHT designation. The entire process will be very user-friendly for everyone. Complete details on fees are available online, and those interested may also call the Carlisle Auctions office at 717-243-7855 and speak with an auctions specialist.
Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals, May 16-18 With the 40th Anniversary of Carlisle Events in 2014 and music fans across the country celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles, it’s only fitting that the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals hosts a British Invasion celebration. This year’s event, from Friday to Sunday, May 16-18, at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds, highlights British cars as a showcase and hosts live music as part of this international automotive celebration. Import & Kit Nationals weekend has been ongoing since 1986 and is, in fact, the fourth longest tenured show on the Carlisle Events’ season schedule. What makes the weekend so popular is the eclectic mix of cars and vending options available on the grounds. Better yet, because of the perfect combination of kit and import cars, the weekend is the largest of its type in the country. In a festival atmosphere, a special passport program will be available, where guests can traverse the grounds to view the show cars, have a special booklet stamped, then earn prizes. This weekend is also popular because it hosts multiple free seminars with industry experts, is a great place for car clubs to gather and share automotive passions and with the spring season fresh on the minds of enthusiasts, a scenic cruise is often a must-do after spending some time on grounds. — Cruising Magazine 17

May 2013 Vol. 24 cruisingmaga No. 1 zine.net
EV EN TS
Welcome to 2014 and as always, I hope your holiday season was a great one. We must now move on and look forward to a new cruising season. From what I saw, 2013 was a fantastic year for car events. Let’s hope for the same this year. Many club presidents and car organizations had a productive roundtable meeting in the fall of 2013. The idea was to get a jump start on 2014, hoping to eliminate show and cruise overlaps, and have general discussions about these events. What works, what doesn’t and the future of this wonderful hobby. Obviously, show season demands numerous amounts of time. Preparing a show or cruise is not as easy as one might think. It’s great when you can drive your hot rod to an event, open the trunk, pull out your chair and watch the show from behind your Foster Grants. However, most presidents of car clubs and their staff don’t often have that relaxed view of the event. Music, food, special guests, fliers and even the venue don’t magically appear. There are months of preparation that go into hosting an event. Quite often our club gets phone calls to host an event that the owner wants to have in three weeks. Other clubs are receiving the same phone calls as well. This is an impossible task. Quality programs cannot be organized in that short amount of time. Besides, other established events listed in this magazine’s calendar may be hurt, and the pop-up program would certainly be in jeopardy itself with its own car counts, if the “wrong” date is chosen. One of the many issues that confront presidents are the decisions that must be made in situations like that. I know, I have said it before, but I’m going to say it again, there are people among us who feel as though there is a “buck” to be made from our hobby. One can only hope to deter that type of attitude. You, the car enthusiasts, must choose wisely when attending a show or cruise. If your heart is in the right place you are attending for the enjoyment of the event and most importantly for the cause the event represents. With the amount of clubs out there, it won’t be hard to find duplicate dates for a show or cruise. Discussing schedules early (before inter-club & show finder) gave us the opportunity to possibly modify an event, however, that did not appear to be an issue with those in attendance. Long standing events usually book the same date year after year after year. We have found that most of the major local organizations don’t experience any problems with overlapping dates. There are however, the occasional cruise night events that may happen on the same date. These issues somehow find common ground. As I stated earlier, the demands of show season consume the time of club presidents. However, we will hold another meeting midway through this season just to catch up. Presidents, if you haven’t sat in yet, please take this as an open invitation to join us and frankly discuss anything that may be on your mind. Rather than hearing negatives let’s at least try for some positives. You can contact Tony at 609-839-2239 or tony.sceia@us.ibm.com, or contact me at 609-381-3249 and bn67fairlane@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Don’t ever take the fun out of it. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

et me start off my column with a wish that 2014 is a great year for everyone. It’s another year to enjoy our hobby and see what the car community members will debut after the winter hiatus. I have always looked forward to the warm weather season to arrive knowing that many car enthusiasts have a new ride to show or made some modifications to their old ones. Winter does not stop the car owners from working on their cars nor does it normally diminish their cruising spirit. Heck, it’s a time to take a breather and plan the new car year, as well as get the old adrenalin flowing for the new season of cruising and car fun. It’s time to work on projects, too. I’ve spoken to many car enthusiasts about shows and cruises and I noticed a common theme from their comments: simply, the best way to enjoy the hobby is whatever way one wishes. I myself have a tight family schedule and I participate in car activities when and as I can. To me and many car owners, it’s not the quantity of events that makes a person a true car guy or gal. It’s how you enjoy them. I know people with really unique and special cars that may attend only a few events a year. They tell me that often, there is only a certain amount of time that they can get out to participate. Therefore each event they participate in is a special time to them. So, like they say at the burger stand…have it your way. Our hobby has many different types of car activities. If you are a cool ride owner, you can show your ride at a judged event, go to a cruise, or if you are of the short-distance route, you can drag race or even get involved in rallies and road races. Last year I was invited to several Sports Car Club of America events. Truth be told, I thought the SCCA was for foreign cars and you needed a fat bank account to participate. Well sir, it’s not just for exotics and the elite crowd, it’s like any other car activity. You can put out large amounts of cash into your racer or work within a budget. I really enjoyed (and related to) the ’66 Barracuda and ’65 Dodge Coronet racers. They were classic and they gave the nonAmerican cars a run for their money. My point is, whenever possible check out the various types of car events that the automotive hobby has. If you have never been to a sports car race or autocross event, check it out and see what other car guys and gals are doing for their car fun.
Department of Good Deeds: Many clubs have worked hard in 2013 for causes that benefit veterans, active military members, scholarships, animals, etc. Kudos to you all. Department of “Edjukation”: Before you plan an event, do your homework. Make a list of things that need to be done. Preparation is important. Remember, we call this our hobby. Let’s enjoy it; being a good sport allows others to enjoy it, too.

CRUISING 101
Hey Cruisers, Maybe some of you haven’t noticed, but winter is over, despite what that stupid ground hog says. There have been some days that were “teasers” – we get the bikes and cars out, then it’s right back to 25 degrees. Any wonder we’re not all sick! But it is officially spring and hopefully old man winter will go hibernate this year more than others; I think we’ve all had our fill of winter. Something new this year: I am returning to the car show circuit, with my own vehicle and when it’s finished, it will match my personality as many of our “toys” do. I am very happy to return once again. Most of the inter-club meetings are over, all well-attended, although I heard the oldest one, M.A.S.R.A., may not be held next year. Unfortunately, we’ve lost a few events this season: Merchantville is gone, Al & Mary at Sunny Side took a break, along with Vineland Acme shows and possibly Downtown Vineland, and I’m told it is possibly the last year for Downtown Millville. But I will tell you that many new events are waiting to take their aged places. Shows come and go. Some will last a long time, some will just be forgotten; the difference is how they are run, and how was interest in the event kept fresh. That’s the secret, keep it fresh. Make it special, not just “this week’s event.” Give people a reason to come – and charging car owners $20 each is not the answer! Car owners know something, that it seems most of those putting on the events forget: it costs money to attend shows! Fees, gas, food, family etc., it all adds up. The average can cost as much as $125, if not more (during a Fri.-Sun. event) and in our present economy that’s money that probably could be spent elsewhere. So give them a reason to be at your event!
See you all at the events, and please stop and say hi,
Larry
