The 1969 Charger up on stage at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida. The final sale price of $47,000 is believed to be a new record for a 318 powered column shifted Charger according to Rob Wolf, editor of Mopar Collector’s Guide magazine.

A DEFINING MOMENT Experiencing the thrill of the game at the Mecum Classic Car Auction By Lou Sitaras

I

t all started in November of last year with a phone call from Dave Ferro of Totally Auto Mopar Restorations who said to me “Dude, I think you just bought a car!” I was certainly surprised to hear this as I hadn’t been car shopping, although, I always enjoy flipping through old car ads. The car he was referring to was a Bullitt black 1969 Dodge Charger that had been treated to a complete restoration. It was only powered by a 318 engine but had been upgraded to a four-barrel and dual exhaust. The asking price was $25,000. In the world of Mopars, the 1969 Dodge Charger is iconic. It is arguably the premier Mopar Muscle car. The Charger has been featured in TV shows like The Duke’s Of Hazzard, and the movies Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and Bullitt (1968 model). The car is recognized worldwide and always brings in a commanding price.

6

After I finished stammering, I got out the words “Yes, I’ll buy it!” I was somewhat familiar with this car, having seen it sitting in Dave’s shop. It was beautiful and the body was laser straight. It was without question one of the finest Dodge Chargers in the country. It was just too nice to drive around and I knew right away that this one would be going to the Mecum Classic Car Auction in Kissimmee, Fla. I am an auction hound. I love the thrill whether it’s an eBay auction or an estate auction but especially a classic car auction. I’ve been to many over the years and they never get old. You can feel the electricity in the room as buyers dream of their next ride and sellers dream of what they’re going to do with the money they make. Buyers want the car as cheap as they can, but the seller wants as much as they can get....and then some. It’s this battle of wills that makes the auction atmosphere so exciting.

A worker placing a sold sticker on the windshield of the Fairmont wagon (lovingly called the Peachmobile). It brought in a final sale price of $3,000 which was 50 percent more than anticipated.

I made arrangements to have the Charger shipped in an enclosed trailer as it was perfectly detailed and I didn’t want rain or dirt to blemish it. I also arranged to drive down in my 1979 Ford Fairmont station wagon and sell that at the auction as well. While the Charger was flawless, the wagon was just the opposite. It was old, tired, leaked every fluid from every orifice, had a rusty exhaust, and hadn’t been inspected since 2011. Believe me, there are no misconceptions with this car...it’s a complete moving violation and if it were towed away by any local highway patrolman I might happen to come across, he would be doing every other motorist on the road a huge favor. For me though, there is no greater adventure then driving an old car cross country. While some may dread the prospect and the challenges that ensue, the thrill of making it one more mile...and another...and another...and maybe one more, is the rush that I live for these days. Make no mistake, I don’t relish the thought of being broken down on the side of the road, but as the saying goes: “If you haven’t lived with fear and you haven’t lived with pain, then you haven’t lived.” The Mecum Classic Car Auction in Kissimmee is heaven. It’s a Utopia and a must-attend event for the classic car enthusiast. It boasts 3,500 beautiful cars and any one of them could be yours if you happen to be the highest bidder. The action is televised online and also on NBC/SN. The thrill of the lights, cameras, exhausts, people, cars, bidding, and yelling is almost sensory overload. Often, I just sit there in disbelief that I am a small part of the greatest hobby in the world.

I arrived in Kissimmee mostly unscathed other than a no start problem at the Waffle House in North Carolina. Fortunately, I brought a big hammer (my favorite tool) and used it to beat on the starter solenoid that was attached to the fenderwell…a common 1970’s Ford problem. Oh, I was lightly tapping at first, but my taps were getting harder as my frustration level was growing. Thank goodness it finally worked because I was beginning to look for motel rooms within walking distance. The Fairmont brought me to Kissimmee slowly with its straight-six engine and multitude of issues but it did it in style with many beeps and waves along the way. I checked the car in at Mecum and the ‘69 Charger was already there on display. Tomorrow the action would begin! The morning of the auction, the excitement was electric. My family from the Mopar Rapid Transit Tour were checking in with me and following online as the cars were approaching the auction block. Amy Berry Bragg, Dave Ferro, and Robin Cook were as excited as I was and my 3 cousins, Lou, Lou, and Steve Sitaras were right by my side propping me up as I was about to drop. As the Fairmont drove onto the auction block, I could feel my blood pressure go up. $1000! $1500! $2000! Then an internet bidder for $2,500 with a final sale price of $3,000! I was jumping out of my shorts. What a thrill that was and much more than expected. Next up was the ‘69 Charger. Potential buyers had been checking it out all day long and I had a good feeling about it but once again, I was a bundle of nerves as the car moved onto the auction block. The bidding started at $25,000 and moved up from there....30, 35, 40, 45, 46! $47,000 was the final bid. The reality was now setting in. I went to Florida with $26,000 worth of cars and I’ll be leaving with $50,000. I feel like I was just on an episode of American Pickers or Antiques Roadshow and hit the motherload. My friends were texting me, my cousins were patting me on the back, and I was the big winner of the day!. “A Defining Moment.” It’s a phrase my cousin Lou used several times when he was with me at the Mecum Auction. What does it mean? Quite simply, it’s a moment in time we experience that helps define and shape who we are as we move into the future. These defining moments are almost always great ones but there are bad ones as well....death, divorce, tragedy. Hopefully, and sometimes with some help, we can let these fantastic life-altering moments define who we are...not the bad ones. I was fortunate enough to experience one today and I’m already crazed over with excitement as I prepare to go back next year. Won’t you join me?

Atlantic City Car Auction

Car Guys and Gals Breakfast

The granddaddy of car events in the resort town of Atlantic City took place for the 46th year in February. The Atlantic City Car Auction was packed to the walls with rides of all descriptions that were up for auction. There were also plenty of vendors on hand with auto-related items for patrons to check out. A special display of modern American muscle featuring Camaros, Mustangs and Jeeps was another event highlight. For the car enthusiasts who like special movie cars, the Batmobile, Christine ’57 Plymouth and the Starsky and Hutch police cruiser were showcased as well as other cool rides. Forty-six years is a long run for a car event, but the Atlantic City Car Auction continues to be a great way to start a new cruising season.

Car guys and gals are a truly sociable bunch. Whenever they get together you can count on conversations that range from car talk to “solving the problems of the world.” There is something special about a regular monthly gettogether to socialize over a great meal. One such monthly gathering is held every third Wednesday of the month at Andy’s Restaurant in Hammonton, New Jersey. This gathering takes place regardless of the weather and bringing your ride is optional. In a few words, it’s about the camaraderie of us car types who share a fun hobby. The many attendees arrive well before the 9 a.m. start time and fill the place. Cruising is about cool cars and it’s also about the great people that participate in it. We also get to share good times all year long.

Enjoying Cruising: A Quarter Mile At A Time The Car Family Album

Some cars are were engineered to cruise at maximum speed down a track that measures a quarter of a mile. Also, some rides pay tribute (aka tribute cars) to racers who have achieved that everlasting respect of performance aficionados from the car community. Here are a few photos of rides that represent a time when Detroit iron was king of the track, whether it be the quarter mile, one-eighth mile, or (nowadays) barreling down to the Jersey shore.

Regardless of where the car event is located, you are bound to meet memorable car enthusiasts. Here are a few photos of those cool guys and gals that make cruising so much fun. The family of cruisers is what makes this hobby so special. Cruising is a hobby that gives you “a million smiles per gallon.”

Hey Gang, Welcome to 2019. I suppose most New Year resolutions re along the lines of: Llet’s hope for a better year.” Well, I believe every year we get is a better year. Last year we lost many good friends and, unfortunately, that is a fact of life we must deal with. I certainly hope we can keep the losses way down for 2019, and with that said I wish everyone a safe and healthy new year with maybe just a little less rain than 2018. Cruising season is on our doorstep and maybe, depending on the weather ,the door has already been open to some events. Don’t let these events pass you by. Get out and enjoy car shows even if you don’t have a car. These are family events where for a few hours you can forget what goes on in your hectic life and just enjoy the moment. I say this because many people have this idea that car shows are just for car guys and gals. They’re for everyone to enjoy. Guys and gals who own classic vehicles don’t just sit behind their cars at shows. They love when people approach them to talk about their car. For most, it brings back memories. For others, it may spark a dream of someday having a classic of their own. We have mentioned time after time that most of us in this classic car hobby are, let’s say, of the older generation. I’ve seen it happening more and more lately that some guys are parking or even selling their rides due to health reasons. What will become of these beautiful classic rides if no one continues with the passion we have? I guess they will go back to the barns where we found them for some future generation to find. Remember back in the day when you could tell a Chevy from a Ford from a Dodge from a Pontiac. Each manufacturer had its distinct look. We knew a Belair from an Impala, a Falcon from a Galaxie, a Cuda from a Charger and the year they were born. Aside from the new modern muscle of today, and even there, I still can’t tell a 2014 Mustang from a 2018 Mustang, every style of new cars today is the same, only the badging is different. Unfortunately, today the import car market is much bigger than it was back in the day. Remember, our classics are true American Iron, not the plastic that is made today. Will these current plastic cars be collectable at Barrett Jackson or Mecum in the future? I think not. So, in reality our classics must live on because of their individual look, grace and style, owever, we need to spark interest in the next generation to keep this hobby alive. Might be easier said than done, our options are limited, but we need to try. At five years old, my grandson loves riding in our old cars, and loves being in the garage with his dad tinkering on the old truck. That’s the start of the next generation. Alright, last item, old news but it’s a new year so here’s the reminder. When paying your entrance fee at any show or cruise, make sure you know where your donation is going. I have heard it too many times, “what is my $10 entrance fee for”? It’s obvious there is cost to host a show, but the majority of the money goes to the chosen charity of that organization or club. Our club posts records of our previous years’ donations at every show and cruise. Remember, we are charity based, NON-PROFIT organizations. I certainly hope this can be the norm… Finally, let’s not lose site of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about having “FUN,” “FUN,” “FUN.” Remember that… Keep On Cruisin’ Baby…Bill Nese

FIBERGLASS Hello my loves! I am so excited to start a new car show season. The neat thing is, I started really early this year. February 7 to be exact. You are probably thinking, WOW, its cold in February. No, this first show was inside. It was in the former Showboat Casino in Atlantic City and it was put on by South Jersey Classics dealership. Shawn and Eddie are the owners of this classic car dealership. The showroom is located at 52 Rt. 40 Harding Highway, Pittsgrove Township. The event was free to spectators, vendors, and to display your car in the show. There were plenty of classic cars on display. You could also purchase them with financing on site through South Jersey Classics. The showroom floor was covered with cars and people. Beautiful neon signs lit up the showroom and gave the event an energized feeling. Music from WVLT 92.1 FM helped set the tone. What a great show to start off our car show season. See you Gals and Guys at the next show.

Frank Adkins’ 1968 Plymouth Road Runner. There’s a story behind every classic.

OUR CARS & THEIR STORIES By Frank Adkins

I

f you have been around old cars and the people who love them for any time at all, it’s a safe bet that you have heard somebody say, “I wish this car could talk.” When two people meet, natural curiosity prompts them to inquire about each other’s past. It’s how we get to know one another. In learning about others’ previous situations and experiences, we gain understanding of who they are. Why should it be any different with our cars? When working on an old car, I find myself wondering about the people who owned it, who grew up in it, and who worked on it. Who were these people? What were they like? Did the owner(s) bond with their car, or did they regard it as they would an appliance? If it was neglected, was the neglect due to laziness or a challenging life situation? Where has it been? Of course, discovering odd damage, slip-shod repairs, or interesting items are all clues to stories that the car could tell if only it could speak. More than 10 years ago my wife was smitten with a white ’68 Road Runner that had appeared on the lot of a classic car dealer near our home. It was a base model with few options, and although it was quite presentable, it was far from perfect. At that time we were unable to purchase it. When it sold, it left the area and we didn’t see it again. We talked about it often and we wondered where it might be. Then, one morning in late 2011 she called me at work. When I answered the phone all she said was, “It’s baaack!” I knew exactly what she meant. I secretly purchased it in January, and then I surprised her with it. She nicknamed it Moose. We learned that it had spent the previous few years with an owner in Virginia, which is why we hadn’t seen it around. But as I started working on it to sort out its many minor shortcomings, I discovered things that made no sense. The original

engine was no longer with it, but engine compartment was fairly well detailed and the replacement engine was the correct aqua hue. But why had the original intake manifold been replaced by an Edelbrock Performer? Furthermore, why had the manifold been painted purple? The original intake manifold had been included with the car, and I reinstalled it almost immediately. Although the mechanical fuel pump worked fine, there was an old Carter electric pump suspended forward of the fuel tank. The wiring to the pump was of a too-small gauge, and it appeared to have been strung along the underside of the car in haste. In one spot it had been burned by the exhaust. There was evidence of the Road Runner having been fitted with traction bars, and there was also evidence of an accident involving the left front corner. What stories could this car tell? Had it been raced? How badly had it been wrecked? For the next several years we used it occasionally for cruises and club meets, and I continued to make small improvements as I found parts. I am now active in a number of Facebook car groups, and I have discovered that this format is a great way to find parts and information and to help others. One day last spring I received a message from another members in one of these groups who said, “I think you might have my old car.” I asked him what he could tell me about it that would identify it as his. Rather than tell me about unique characteristics, he provided me the VIN of the car he once owned. Sure enough, it matched our car. His name is Scott, and over the next couple of days he wrote several installments in Facebook Messenger filling in much of the Road Runner’s history dating all the way back to 1975. Scott is an Ohio native, and the paperwork he’d found in the glove compartment indicated that the Road Runner had been sold new there. ► 15

In 1981, when he was 14, he and his father went to a local junkyard to purchase parts for a car they were working on. While his dad spoke to the older NEWESS! 221 Fowser Rd., gentleman who owned the yard, Scott spotted a car hiding under a tarpaulin. R ADD Millville, NJ 08332 He lifted a corner of the tarp and discovered a white Road Runner. He called his father over, and his father then inquired about it. The proprietor stated that the CrazyHorseClassicCars.com car had come into the yard in 1975 following an accident in which the left front info@CrazyHorseClassicCars.com info@CrazyHorseClassicCars.com corner was damaged. Rather than part it out and scrap it, he had set it aside and covered it with the tarp to ensure that it stayed intact. Scott’s father negotiated with the salvage yard owner, and he wound up with the car in exchange for painting a Pinto station wagon. CLASSIC CARS LLC By the time Scott turned 16, he and his father had replaced the damaged fender, and Scott drove the Road Runner while he was in high school. He yanked the hot 440 and installed a 400 in its place using the external bolt-on pieces from the original 383. He then sold his prized Road Runner to someone who flipped it. It wound up going through the auction in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. From there it went to Daisey’s Used Cars in Georgetown, Delaware. He said  ANYTHING FROM SIMPLE INSTALLS TO TURN KEY CARS  he’d love to buy it back one day if it ever came up for sale, but he also wanted to provide as much history as possible to the current owner. Suddenly, so much of what I’d discovered about the Road Runner made sense. ATTENTION: artwork The fuel pump had been wired up by a high schooler. I know its history dating back to 1977, and I want to share it with its current owner. I am thankful to Scott for reaching out to me. Since becoming friends with him, (By Appointment Only) I have gained a new appreciation for the Road Runner. It’s now more than just a pretty white car. It has an identity, and its story makes it unique. Because Kristy and AN ND C I now know so much of its history, we can embrace its quirks. CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

Welcome to a new season of automotive events. Just think, when this magazine started, a classic would have been a 1964 model or older and South Jersey would have had maybe a dozen clubs. Running an event was easier back then, only “stock, modified and custom.” Now, we have the late-model cars like the GNX and Marauder and the new Camaro, Challengers and Mustangs. Not to mention street rods and rat rods. We now must judge more than 100 years of vehicles, and, of course, we are all experts. Ha ha! Then there is the classification of vehicles known as “American Marquee.” Yeah, right, most of the foreign cars are built in America and the American cars are built in Canada or Mexico. Nothing is easy anymore. Let’s look at the shows. It used to be that a car club ran the event, picked the date, location, etc. Now, a city or business tells the club when, where and if a rain date is possible, and sometimes even what’s allowed at the event. It used to be that if Club A had an event, Club B would pick another week, because clubs respected clubs. City and business respect one thing, $$$$$$, so events schedule on top of other events and if we have a rainy season like last year, it is a real mess. So, all I’m saying is if you are at an event and you are not 100 percent happy, don’t get in the chairperson’s face—they have busted their backside all day. Give them a break and discuss your concerns with them a week or two in the future. I always say: “If you have an event where everybody is happy, you did not do your job. You must get somebody mad at you! Speaking of cities and businesses, as a club you do have the right to “suggest” that if your show is being held at their location, they should have enough help on hand to avoid long lines. Want to get people upset? Give them a long line on a hot July or August day. Regardless of whether it’s food service or not enough Port-A-Johns, long lines on a 100-degree day are not going to get you a strong showing next year I want to thank all the clubs who attended our Inter-Club Meeting. It was a great turnout. I’m looking forward to a lot of new events this year, plus some old ones returning with new twists. It should prove to be an interesting season. If you are preparing a flier for your event, be sure to include phone numbers and complete addresses. And remember, if you are forced to move to a rain date, the Cruising Magazine online calendar gets updated every two days, so get the info to me and I will update your event on the calendar. Hey, it’s a free service! See Ya Cruising!!

SHIFTINGGEARS By Ben Notaro • red63vetnj@comcast.net As we get into the swing of the New Year, I started thinking back to the most influential event of 2018. After about 30 seconds of deliberation, I came up with one word: rain. It seems that 2018 had the most rain-filled weekends of any year in recorded memory. I really must give credit to all the clubs and event coordinators who had to alter their dates (and lives) to make sure their events took place. However, the weather forced many rain dates, rain outs and events “rescheduled until it gets dry sometime this year.” It was really a hectic ride, weather-wise, to say the least. So, in my infinite wisdom, I have decided to come up with a suggestion for making the best of rain-influenced, rescheduled and restructured events. Here it goes: Etch-a-Sketch trophies. Just think, no running back to the trophy shop for new base engravings, just shake and rewind in the new date. By the way, have fun turning those little knobs. Also, how about special rain date awards? Trophies for most water in a T-tub. How about, a trophy for the participant that flings their body over a car as they get caught in the rain? A special trophy could have a figure of a weather reporter tied to a tree for predicting sunny skies that really turn into a deluge of wet weather. This trophy can be mailed to the local station that called it 99.9 percent wrong. To be serious, I must commend all the people and groups that made the best out of an uncontrollable situation due to last year’s weather. It’s not fun looking at the TV, checking the internet, and staring up at the sky the night before and early in the morning prior to an event you’ve worked on for months. Let’s all hope that we paid our dues in 2018 and this season the weather shines on our hobby. Department of Education: Idea: Adopt a school and invite students to your events. Focus on kids and cars. Idea #2: Have students sit in a cool ride for the student of the month photo. Idea#3: Have teachers and students pose next to a cool ride. Objective: Get kids interested in cars. Department of Fun: Take car fun serious and not so serious as to lose that fun. Here’s to a healthy and happy cruising/show season of 2019.
