Passing The Torch Our classics help tell an important story to the next generation By Frank Adkins 6

B

eing a child of the Sixties, the hot cars of the time were plentiful while I grew up. Although I was too young to drive, I remember the Chargers, GTOs, Camaros and Mustangs that cruised the streets in our area. Often, I pedaled my bike around our neighborhood, hoping to find them parked so I could see them up close, and I still remember the houses where their lucky owners lived. During those years, I witnessed many stoplight drag races on Kirkwood Highway, and although I don’t recall the specifics of most of those impromptu acceleration contests, collectively they left an indelible impression on my young self. There were no car enthusiasts in my family, so I had no mentor to guide my automotive inclination. I first became aware of an organized car culture outside of the racing community during a trip to Kirkwood Dodge near Wilmington in 1976. There, while my father negotiated a deal on what would be our next family car, I picked up a Chrysler Corporation sponsored magazine that promoted that year’s models. In it, a writer related his experience driving a new “Silent Shaft” four-cylinder equipped Dodge D-50 pick-up truck to a WPC (named for Chrysler Corporation founder, Walter Perceval Chrysler) Club meet. There, owners of sparkling pre-war and early post-war Chrysler vehicles dabbed the morning dew from their smooth fenders and brilliant chrome. Although I knew little about these antiques, I felt a kinship with their owners. Even so, these people seemed to be my grandparents’ age. I wondered, where were the younger folks? One truth of the car hobby is that we tend to seek the cars we grew up with— those cars that we either drove or wanted to drive. The connections that we have with our cars are the manifestations of deep-rooted memories and the emotions they evoke. The gray-haired owners who had lavished countless dollars and hours of labor on the cars pictured in the brochure have certainly passed on. Because the next generation (folks my parents’ age) had not forged strong memories with these early automobiles, many of them sat forgotten in barns, or they traded hands for paltry sums following the deaths of their owners. We simply don’t have strong emotional ties to the cars of the previous generation. The law of supply and demand explains why the values of cars from each era fall off sharply as that generation dwindles. I sometimes think about the cars pictured in that brochure, and I wonder how they fared as the decades passed. I imagine them sitting unloved while their restorations withered. Perhaps mice infested their once-pristine interiors while moisture attacked their body panels, chrome, and mechanicals. Some have been “discovered” years later by people who view them as the starting points for street rod builds. Consequently, I’m sure many have been updated with modern drivetrains, braking systems, and suspensions. Depending on a car’s “as-found” condition, this makes sense, for proper restorations are often cost prohibitive. Besides, an older vehicle that has been updated is easier to drive, safer, and more enjoyable on the roads of today than a vehicle with antiquated suspension, brakes, and a limited top speed. In this manner, many older vehicles enjoy new life, although it seems to me that those who restored them a couple of generations earlier would be unhappy if they knew the fates of their cars. My parents, who are now approaching 80, came of age in the late Fifties. As their generation has aged and its people have left the hobby due to declining health or death, we have seen a decrease in interest and values of the cars from that era. Of course, there are the iconic cars of the decade, including the ’55-’57 Chevrolets, but the majority of the cars from that time have fallen out of favor with the whole of the car community. The toys that my generation grew up with, in addition to movies such as Christine, Two Lane Blacktop and American Graffiti, did much to instill in us an appreciation for the 1950s cars. I would love to one day own a ’57 Fury like the one my father had during his teens, but I have never driven or ridden in one. Coincidentally, his ’57 Fury was very similar to the ’58 Plymouth immortalized as Christine, but aside from that, I have no memories of

such a car and no strong connection to it. Although a Fury like my father’s has never been on my automotive bucket list, I would consider purchasing one if the price fell to a point that I considered it tempting. I believe that we are in the early stages of the decline of the next generation of cars. At 54, I am on the tail end of the generation that grew up with the Sixties and Seventies cars. Top examples are still setting auction price records, but that doesn’t seem to be true of lesser cars from that time. Although the economy has recovered from the recession and collector car prices have been on the rise, the average muscle-era car in number two or number three condition hasn’t kept pace. Many owners of these cars are now entering retirement and they are looking to downsize their collections. Sadly, some are dying off. When supply outstrips demand, prices fall. That seems to be the case with many of the cars from my youth. The same seems to be true of parts prices. Although popular models are well supported by the restoration parts industry, as fewer people dive into restorations, parts don’t sell as quickly. Furthermore, used parts are not in the same strong demand that they were 10-15 years ago. Many of the car enthusiasts with whom I have talked worry that the hobby is dying. They claim that there are few young people attending shows. That may be true, especially of traditional shows, but as an automotive teacher, I am in daily contact with young enthusiasts. The automotive genres available to them are far more diverse than those of earlier generations. My generation was, and still is, consumed with the factory supercars. A cross-section of my students includes those who are fanatical about imports, off-road trucks, diesels, drift cars, modern muscle, and traditional muscle cars that have been retrofitted with latemodel drivetrains. Forced induction is a popular theme, for one student owns a supercharged late-model Firebird, another owns a supercharged late-model Mustang, and two are building turbocharged Mazda Miatas. Another student is fitting a Toyota Camry V-6 into a ’91 Toyota MR2. To him, his MR2 is a classic, for it is nearly 10 years older than he is! He is following the hot-rodding tradition by installing a bigger, more powerful engine into a small, lightweight body. The ingredients are different, but the recipe is the same as the one that has been used by generations of hot-rodders. Many of today’s young car builders have developed skillsets far more broad than those of their parents. The Internet, and most notably YouTube videos, have had a lot to do with this. These skills include metal fabrication, welding, and electrical/electronics. Today’s young enthusiasts have better understandings of fuel mixtures, ignition timing, and valve timing than many of the enthusiasts of yesteryear. It would be a mistake to discount their passion or their abilities. So, where does all of this leave our cherished “baby boomer” cars? (Yes, that’s what some of the kids call our rides.) Thanks to seeing our cars around during their formative years, and thanks to music videos and movies such as The Fast and the Furious series, many do appreciate our cars. That said, few are interested in matching numbers or proper date codes. They see our cars in much the same way that my generation views the cars left to us by previous generations—blank canvases that can give us glimpses into history while affording us opportunity to express our own tastes. As the prices of our cars fall, they will become accessible to our youth. While we may be uncomfortable thinking of our prized possessions falling into the hands of the next generation when we are gone, this passing of the torch is inevitable. Although I cringe at the thought of somebody taking apart a car that I have poured my heart and soul into in order to change it in ways that I might find distasteful, I would rather my cars thrive in the care of enthusiastic owners than languish unappreciated, uncared for, and ultimately consumed by the elements. Future generations will inherit the earth, and civilization will continue moving forward long after we are gone. However our cars fit into tomorrow’s world, they will carry with them pieces of our legacies.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Ocean City , NJ Car Show

AACA Car Show

The Jersey shore does not close down after Labor Day. It goes into the “second half” of the summer. One shoretown that extends summer is Ocean City. This family resort community hosted the 45th annual Classic Car and Street Rod Show in early September. Friday evening featured a sock-hop party at the Tabernacle church hall with dancing, games, family fun and more. Iron Kettle BBQ was on hand serving up some fine food. On Saturday, the event participants’ rides were displayed at the Tabernacle grounds until noon and then preceded to the famed Ocean City Boardwalk to be displayed. An awards ceremony took place Saturday in front of the Music Pier on the boardwalk. Cruising to the Jersey shore after Labor Day always makes summer seem to last a lot longer and also gives the cruisers more fun time near the ocean.

The Jersey Cape Region AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) has been around for more than 50 years. The group’s appreciation and dedication to classic cars is a hallmark of their very existence. The club staged their annual auto show in the town of Smithville, N.J. The event is open to cars that are 25 years or older. It’s a great laid-back event for car owners and spectators to enjoy in a really Americana-type village location. The show even had a fife-and-drum group to add to the vintage charm of the show. Spectators get to vote for vehicles that range from pre-War II and post war to street rods and trucks. In all, it’s a very fine event to enjoy the day checking vintage rides. Here’s to the next 50 plus years of enjoying antiques rides by the fine members of the Jersey Cape Region AACA.

Wildwood Fall Boardwalk Show Whoever gets involved in car events knows that there are two major components to an event, location and weather. Now the Jersey shore is one really fine location and when the weather is perfect that equates to a potentially big event. And so the Wildwood Boardwalk Fall Car Show had both location and weather, equating to nearly a 1,000-car event and the fun of the boardwalk on a summer-like day in autumn. Cars from Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and (of course) New Jersey came out for the show. As a matter of fact, one gentleman trailered in his ride all the way from Arizona. This multi-day show had a vending area in the Wildwood Convention Hall, live music by The Fabulous Grease Band and a Thursday evening fun run to a local winery. The cars were displayed on the boardwalk Friday and Saturday with the Atlantic Ocean as a background. The awards ceremony on Sunday brought the event to a close for the year, but you can be sure that car guys and gals will see another great group of car events at the Wildwoods.

Air-Cooled Car Show The early Volkswagens were a most unique car. They were economical, easy to drive —they float—and they were fun. The VW’s appeal really seemed to escalate in the 1960’s. They were cars that were (and are) like a blank canvas. One can hop up the engine to get some serious horsepower and back in the day they looked cool even when adorned with flowers and hippy art. Let’s not forget the VW Van. This ride was a legend in the days of flower power. The Vineland VW Crew staged their second annual air-cooled car show back in late September for all rides that were cooled by natural air flow and no radiators. The show had rides from a multi-state area that came out to enjoy a fun car show. The show had vendors for parts, one-of-a-kind homemade trophies, and a great turnout of participants. This is a tribute to another fine group of cars that make this cruising hobby the fun that it is. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Dead Man’s Curve Car Show In 1978, a group of car enthusiasts got together and formed a club. These spirited gentlemen named their organization the “Dead Man’s Curve Custom Machine Car Club.” Like hardcore cars guys who strive to do even more for their hobby, they started to promote their car events. Residing in the northern part of New Jersey, they produced some really large events that eventually led them to the South Jersey seaside town of Atlantic City. The club staged a car happening at the Showboat Hotel with a show that featured top-shelf rides covering all genres of car fun. Classic dragsters, street rods, movie theme rides and plenty of live family entertainment were a part of this three-day show. Spectators even got to see Grandpa from The Munsters TV show as well as Batman and Catwoman . You had to be there to appreciate the wide variety of automotive eyecandy this event offered. The Other Side of Car Clubs Car clubs and motorcycle clubs are about having fun with a group of people who share a common interest. They can use classic or specialty cars for socializing functions and they can promote the enjoyment of participating in cruises and shows as a group. To the outside observer, clubs are just about cars. Well, car clubs also have a side the general public does not always see. It is a giving side that supports many diverse charities as well as members of our armed forces. Here are a few photographs of clubs and club representatives that reflect the generous side of car groups. It’s something that people who are not in our hobby should know. Such generosity can be seen during the holiday season or during events throughout the year that raise funds for a designated organization or group. Giving back to the community is an often under-recognized aspect of car clubs. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Ben Notaro, Robert Sliwecki and John Fisher

The granddaddy of car events in the resort town of Atlantic City took place for the 47th year in February. The Atlantic City Car Auction was packed to the walls with rides of all descriptions that were up for auction as well as new events to make things even more fun for the automotive enthusiasts. A special feature added this year was a multifaceted car show that had two shows staged at two different locations. The Deuce’s Wild Car Show was at the Convention Hall and featured 40 ultra high-end beautiful rides. Then there was the Joker’s Wild open car show held at the Showboat Hotel. The third component of this trio of car shows is the invitational car display featuring some very unique and innovative rides. Throw in the car corral and flea market and you have a four-day happening that will get the car guys and gals pumped up for the cruising season of 2020. Once again, a great way to open the cruising season is the annual Atlantic City Car Show and Auction. When it comes to fun with cars, as they say….DO AC. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Spring Carlisle: A MEGA EVENT One of the largest car events in the region takes place April 22-26 with the return of Spring Carlisle at the Carlisle (Pa.) Fairgrounds. Spanning five days, Spring Carlisle welcomes more than 100,000 automotive enthusiasts at its 82-acre facility. The event offers plenty of shopping options with 8,100 vending spaces filled with millions of automotive pieces and parts. In addition to the parts, collectibles and memorabilia, there are cars for sale within the car corral, meaning buyer and seller can work face to face, most times consummating the sale very quickly. The car corral isn’t the only way to pick up a car at Spring Carlisle as Carlisle Auctions offers a two-day classic and collector car auction on Thursday and Friday of event weekend. The fun starts at noon each day with more than 250 cars crossing the block per day. Much like the car corral, auction cars

and trucks will span automotive history. Consignments that are 25 years and older are taken via the Carlisle Auctions’ Free Unless Sold guarantee. By welcoming cars of this era into the auction, the variety of available lots is nearly limitless. The best thing about the live auction excitement provided by Carlisle Auctions is that not only is it a great spectator opportunity, but cars are priced to move. Select consignments will sell for low four figures with others touching the six-figure price range. Online bidding is also an option with Carlisle Auctions. Other attractions for this year’s event include a man cave, she shed and an appearance by TV personality Lou Santiago of Car Fix. THE WOMEN OF MOPAR Stories of unique individuals who have made our hobby better By Lou Sitaras

W

hen I was growing up, boys played with cars and girls played with dolls. It was as simple as that. However, as I grew older, I became aware of people like Shirley Muldowney, who obviously didn’t follow the norm. Mulrooney lived her life just as she wanted and rose to the top of a male-dominated sport—NHRA drag racing. As a teenager, I would sometimes see women at car shows or car related events. Even then I assumed they were there to support their boyfriends or husbands. It never dawned on me that they might be there just because they wanted to be. Yes, it’s true, I was a bit of a male chauvinist, although I did root for Billy Jean King against Bobby Riggs in The Battle of the Sexes (1973), the greatest tennis match I have ever witnessed. The match pitted man against woman in the most-watched sporting event in history and elevated women athletes to new heights. For the record, Billy Jean King wiped Bobby Riggs off the court—and she did it in style.

Over the past few years, I’ve become more and more aware that women not only enjoy classic cars, they’re passionate about them. These women not only attend events, they organize them, host them, drive their own classic cars to them, and even do a few burnouts. They have given me an entirely different perspective on cars, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. In this issue of Cruising Magazine, we begin a four-part series dedicated to these women and what led them to the path they’ve followed. I am proud to bring this story to print. I could easily include every marque of automobile out there, but because my specialty is Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth, these are the women I have focused on. Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly present to you, in their very own words, The Women of Mopar. ►

Accomplished automotive photographer Robin Cook standing behind her beautifully restored 1973 Dodge Challenger.

ROBIN COOK

Cook is a representative for the Mopar Maniacs Car Club and has worked tirelessly for the Mopar Hall Of Fame. She is an accomplished automotive photographer who is credited with two magazine cover shots and countless interior shots for Mopar Collectors Guide Magazine. She is also the official photographer for the Mopar Rapid Transit Tour. Cook: Many in my family are car people. My dad loved midget racing and would take me to the Famed Lakeside Speedway in Denver. I would jump up and down as the fast, little machines raced by. Mom also loved racing and when my dad passed away when I was 13, she continued the racing bug enjoying weekends at another local track, Englewood Speedway, which coincidentally my future husband Steve raced there with his buddies. We didn’t know each other at the time. Mom also had a friend whose husband drag raced, so we visited the straight track almost every weekend! I remember standing right next to Big Daddy, Don Prudhomme, The Mongoose, etc….right on the starting line behind a rickety little fence. Security and safety at that point apparently were not a priority. My favorite quickly became Judy Lilly and her little Barracuda. She was amazing in my eyes and I wanted to be her. That was my first introduction into Mopar and also about that time I met Steve. He drove a Chevy pickup with cool whip antennas that would bend down when he went roaring past. After going with Steve for a while, he fell in love with a 1972 Challenger at a dealer around 1973. I was hooked! We washed and waxed that car every weekend. I thought we were going to rub all the paint off. Those were the beginnings. I did street race a little bit (Bad Girl). I wanted to race professionally, but life got in the way and it didn’t happen. Steve got me the best birthday gift ever—the [Richard] Petty Driving Experience. This was incredible. Going through the classroom in the morning and on the track in the afternoon. Eight laps in a real race car! I was fast, too. Second fastest time among the students of mostly men and I loved it. I firmly believe it’s in your blood.

JOY CURRAN

I first met Curran at the Mega Mopar event in Reading (Pa.) as she was sitting on top of the wing of Richard Petty’s personal Superbird, first by herself and then with Ridgely Car Show creator Brenda Walls. Once I realized Curran owned and drove her own 1970 Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda with a four-speed and no power steering, I knew right away this was someone who had a story to tell. She didn’t disappoint.

Joy Curran is comfortably perched atop Richard Petty’s personal 1970 Plymouth Superbird at the Mega Mopar event in Reading, Pa.

Curran: My love for Mopar started when I was about six years old. Growing up there were always several muscle cars in our garage and Mopars were by far my favorite. From a very young age I always said that when I was old enough, I wanted my first car to be a Mopar. I hung out at Raceway Park (Englishtown, N.J.) and attended many local car shows growing up. My heart was always drawn to either a ‘Cuda or Challenger. When I turned 16, I was lucky enough to find a 1970 Challenger 318 automatic. Pulling up to the parking lot in high school with that car was so cool to me. I can’t tell you how many of the girls in school couldn’t understand why I wanted that car. I know I was different and I’m not knocking their cars—they had newer sports cars and BMWs—but for me, I was on cloud nine with my Mopar. I thought a lot about my uncle when I got my first car. We were very close when I was much younger. He had a 1967 Hemi Coronet four-speed. He always told me that when I was old enough, he was going to teach me how to drive a four-speed, but he was tragically killed in an accident at a very young age. I will tell you that if he were still here today, he definitely would be out cruising with me. He knew how much I loved muscle cars, especially Mopars. I think of him so often. Like many people, I unfortunately don’t have my first car, but that passion for Mopars has always been running through my blood. Thankfully when the time was right, I found my dream car, my 1970 AAR ‘Cuda. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy going to car cruise nights and car shows, but my absolute favorite is attending the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. For me it’s not just about the cars, but it’s about the terrific people you meet along the way. I’ve made such wonderful friends over the years that all share the same passion. I love to just sit back and listen to their stories too. I’m sure I’m not alone when I talk about how cool it is to just go out for a nice ride in your car—I don’t need a radio—I just love to hear the rumble of my motor as I’m rolling through the gears. That’s my happy place. Even better is when you pull up to a traffic light and look over: A guy rolls down the window and says, ‘Oh My God that’s a chick driving!’ And you get that thumbs up. The subsequent stories are also insightful, touching and heartwarming so please check out the next issue to read about the women who have made such a difference in the hobby we love. You’ll learn, just as I have, that women love driving, fixing, modifying and racing just as much if not more than men do.

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey Gang, Well, here we are starting another decade and another year of getting older. However, getting older is not such a bad thing. The way I see it, we have no alternative, so enjoy every day and be happy. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year with your families. There’s something about the holidays that brings people closer together to celebrate and have a good time. How about we continue those good times for the entire 2020 cruising season? Speaking of the 2020 cruising season, events are starting to pop up now. Check out this magazine and Cliff’s Calendar to find all the shows and cruises, then mark your calendar for the year. Rumor has it some shows with a longrunning history will not return in 2020. Sorry to hear that, but without help to host these events it’s getting harder and harder to put on the quality that these shows gave us. I do hear that Pumpkin Run will again be at Harry’s junkyard in Egg Harbor Township (N.J.) in November. Actually, I like to call it a “look back in time yard,” because that rusting iron does tell a story of our past. Expect huge crowds for this one. We all know that the show and cruise events have become enormous. You can take your ride out every night of the week and maybe attend three or four events every weekend, if you choose. I suppose I say this every year and you are probably tired of hearing it, but I’m going to say it anyway. Please choose the shows and cruises that help support those who are less fortunate. Car shows and cruises should not make a profit, they should support a charity. So, spend your money on doing something good and helping others. I can tell you it is rewarding. Besides all the local events being held, many of us also travel to other states to attend shows. Carlisle Events (Carlisle, Pa.) has an event for every make of car. They host many events throughout the year, and you can spend three or four days shopping for parts, showing your car, and meeting new people. You have the street rod nationals in York (Pa.), the Hot Rod Power Tour (Syracuse, N.Y.), the Goodguys events…the list goes on. Why do I mention all of these? It’s simple, these are new experiences, you see different cars, you meet different people, and it’s a definite change of scenery. My car has taken me to states for national meets that I otherwise may have never visited. These experiences I look forward to every year simply because it’s a change. Obviously, it’s somewhat expensive to travel, but you know what they say: “You can’t take it with you.” If you feel you need to refresh yourself in this car hobby, then maybe you need a new experience. You might be surprised at the amount of fun that is still left in this hobby. I wish all the cruisers a healthy and safe 2020. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about having Fun, Fun, Fun. Remember that! Keep On Cruisin’ Baby…Bill Nese

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

Spring is about ready to hit and this year seems to be big on shows again. We had a nice turn out at our annual Inter Club Meeting, collected a lot of flyers and heard about many new events and changes in some older ones. So, it will make the year interesting as long as “Mom Nature” works with us. I do want to mention that in talking with my friend Harry Fleming of Fleming’s Auto Parts, his event will be happening again this November. You know, I ‘ve been around for a while, have a few trophies for my imperfect cars (I would like to have a perfect car someday, but who am I kidding?) Besides imperfect can get dirty., As I said, I was looking at some trophies and I saw my first one. I had gone to Pleasantville, N.J., one Friday night, without the knowledge of my parents. There happened to be an eighth-mile drag strip there, so I decided what the hell, and gave my ‘60 T’Bird a run and won! After a stop at Tony Marts, I went home and went to bed. Oops! Forgot about the white shoe polish class numbers on the windows. I will tell you that at 5 a.m. I received a very rude awakening from my parents. Then a good grounding. But as many of us who had been there, did we learn anything? Nope! Two weeks later I won my second trophy, but ran the car through the car wash before going home. Looking ahead to the season, I want to speak as an older person to those setting up events. Some of us are handicapped and need special parking. And a couple of benches would be nice. I know in my younger days I’d walk Carlisle twice in one day, but now I’d be lucky and out of breath to make it to the gate! So, please give some consideration when setting up an event. Also, remember to keep some cool water around should you see someone at your event looking a bit pale or faint. I want to mention some interesting events for this year: Wings & Wheels in Millville, Beers & Gears in Wilmington, Cruise Down Memory Lane in Vineland, The Boeing Show in Ridley, Pa, the Red, White & Blueberry Show in Hammonton, NJ , The Chicken Run In Cedarville, N.J. and, of course, The Pumpkin Run in Scullville, N.J. All great events along with many others. I also want to mention something about the Cruising calendar. We update it every two days, so if you have an event that gets rescheduled, we can update our online calendar (CruisingMagazine.net) to get the word out. For advertisers, we will also post a notice on Cruising’s Facebook page. Finally, send me your show fliers and I will add them to the calendar.

I’ll start off by wishing everyone a bit of a belated Happy New Year. I guess this old car guy gets a bit more reflective of the events that happened in the passing year and more predictive of how things seem to be shaping up in the New Year. At least 2019 was minimal in the rainy weekend department. There was also no shortage of events for car enthusiasts to attend. Now as I look at 2020, I have a bit of sad and very disappointing news to convey to us who enjoy reading car publications. I feel like I’m writing an obituary of sorts when I make the sad announcement of the discontinuing (death) of 19 car magazines. Let me start from the beginning. As a teenager I grew up working in my aunt’s grocery store. It was a mom and pop place that had a very large magazine section. Publications like Street Rodder, Motor Trend, Car Craft and Rod and Custom, among others, were always available for me to ogle at the custom-made rides and rods. These and many magazines were also my inspiration to have a cool car of my own when I got my driver’s license. Anyway, I can still recall the wild builds of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and how he made cars that had bubble tops and asymmetrical styling among unique styling ques. Magazines introduced the new drag machines that looked somewhat stock and had their wheelbase radically altered. They were dubbed funny cars. Let’s not forget the legends of drag racing were introduced to us on a national basis via the glossy print magazines. Names like Don Garlits and Shirley Muldowney and many other notable drag racers became racing legends through their participation in the drag racing sport and through “meeting” them each month in the car mags. I enjoyed reading an article and coming back to it to resume where I left off at bedtime. There was also something about looking at the color photographs many times noticing something new on a car that I did not catch the first time I read an article. In this age of the computer, laptop and ipad, a person can now look at these books in the electronic age and use their mouse or run their finger on a screen to turn a page. For me, flipping through the pages, going back to something I wanted to focus on again and setting that magazine down and picking it up at will, was a part of the golden age of car publications. Sometimes it’s not easy to see progress change things that were so engrained in our lives. I’ll miss keeping my favorite copy issue handy or passing my copy on to a person who would get enjoyment out of it. So, with reluctance I bid farewell to another staple in the car hobby. Department of Education: There are numerous new events. Check out their criteria before you enter your ride. Department of Recreation: It’s your/our hobby. It’s no-one’s business to tell you how to enjoy. Department of Economics: It’s not how much one spends on their ride, it’s the value of the fun they have with it…..priceless.
