Alternatives to Car Shows Drag racing, auto cross and road rallies are just a few By Frank Adkins
O
n a warm, sunny weekend you will likely see numerous car enthusiasts driving their gleaming, freshly-waxed automobiles to or from car shows. These shows are as popular as ever, and they are a great way to network with fellow car nuts, but after a while they can grow boring. You spend hours slumped in a folding chair in the hot sun behind your car, rising only to swish away the occasional errant insect from your fender. Yawn. There have to be other ways to enjoy special interest cars! Most serious car nuts have tried drag racing at least once. A drag race is an acceleration trial that begins from a standing start and typically lasts for a quarter of a mile. It sounds simple, but it takes considerable skill and practice to launch the car into motion as aggressively as possible without losing precious thousandths of a second to excessive tire spin. Competitors’
6
cars are lined up two at a time, and when the “Christmas tree” counts down to the green light, both cars rocket into motion, running flat-out side-by-side for 1320 feet. Most drag strips hold weekly “grudge nights” or “street car nights” in which folks can run their cars against the clock numerous times for $15 or $20. Of course, there are more structured events for serious racers, but some start there. We are fortunate that there are five drag strips within a two-hour drive from our area. A downside of drag racing is that hard launches can destroy driveline components. In addition, modifications performed in the interest of covering the 1320 as quickly as possible, such as steep gearing and loud exhaust, often make a car less fun to drive on the street and they diminish its ability to run at highway speeds for extended periods. ►
participants an excellent opportunity to sample several racetracks each year. Little specialized preparation to the vehicle is required, but entrants must have a fire suit and approved helmet. Some previous on-track training and experience are also required. Another alternative is auto cross, a form of racing that has existed for more than fifty years, but its popularity has surged in recent years. Unlike both drag racing and road racing, auto cross does not require a dedicated racetrack. Instead, events are usually held in large parking lots. The course is defined by orange pylons, so it is not permanent, and it is easily varied from one event to the next even if they are held at the same location. Cars enter the course one at a time; their drivers navigate the course as quickly as possible while doing their best to avoid knocking down cones. Although some dismiss auto cross as merely “poor man’s road racing,” the two forms of racing are quite different. In road racing, speeds routinely exceed 100 MPH. In most auto crosses, drivers run in first and second gears only and the turns are numerous and tight. In fact, auto cross drivers make an average of four maneuvers for every one maneuver of a Formula One driver. Mistakes have a cumulative effect that lead to toppled cones. Another advantage of auto cross over drag racing and road racing is that it is far less stressful to the car. Parts breakage is seldom an issue, and the worst accidents rarely involve more than a number of displaced cones. Beginners are required to purchase helmets and pay entry fees, but nothing more. In fact, some small auto cross organizations make loaner helmets available. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) is the best known auto cross and road race organization in the country. Local marquee-specific clubs, most notably Porsche, BMW, and Corvette clubs, sometimes host auto cross events. In our area the Brandywine Motorsport Club (BMC) is a group of auto cross enthusiasts that welcomes newcomers. Senior members provide advice, driving instruction, and facilitate a great time for all. The club hosts monthly events at Glasgow High School in Newark, Del., from April through August, and a season finale in September in the back parking lot at Dover International Raceway. Both the SCCA and BMC separate cars into classes based on age, modifications, and expected performance, which keeps the competition fair. For those who do not wish to drive fast, road rallies can provide a means to satisfy their automotive urges. A road rally is a timed event held on public roads with other traffic present, but the objective isn’t speed. It’s accuracy. Each rally team is comprised of a driver and a navigator. The driver pilots the vehicle while following the navigator’s directions concerning both route and speed. Delays caused by other traffic must be accounted for. Along the way there are checkpoints. A team’s members are assessed a penalty for every second they are either early or late from the theoretical “ideal” time at which they should have passed the checkpoint. At the end of the day, the team with the smallest cumulative penalty is declared the winner. If this sounds like a day rife with pressure and frustration, it is. The key to remaining on speaking terms with one’s rally partner is to not take it too seriously. Road rallies require a great deal of preparation; consequently, not many groups host them. In our area the Northeast Rally Club hosts three events per year. They provide formal instruction to newcomers, but their steep annual dues and event fees prevent many from participating. The Brandywine Motorsport Club also hosts a number of road rallies each year. Their fees are considerably less and the atmosphere more relaxed, but their instruction is less structured—not a bad thing. The best way to become acquainted with road rallying is to pair up with an experienced partner for your first rally or two. Some clubs host scenic cruises, usually in the fall. Check with local clubs to see what activities are available in your area. Also check with your area region of the Antique Automobile Club of America to see what activities they have planned. As you can see, when the car show doldrums get you down, there are ’65 Plymouth Valiant on 2014 Hotchkis Real Street Challenge auto cross course in Carlisle, Pa. This is a Delaware Tech plenty of other ways to enjoy your special automobile. Automotive Deptartment project car, driven by Frank Adkins.

Closed-circuit road racing is another form of motorsport familiar to most car enthusiasts, largely due to the popularity of video games. Road racing is not as accessible as drag racing due to the high cost and smaller number of venues. An hour or two of track rental time can cost several hundred dollars. Furthermore, additional safety equipment and training are often required. There is only one closed-circuit road course within a twohour drive of those in our area. The best way to learn how to road race is to attend a driving school. There you will learn track protocol, safety practices, and of course, driving techniques. The instructors at all well-known driving schools are experienced road racers, and drawing on their realworld experience can shorten your learning curve. An annual event that attracts a couple of hundred participants each year is the Brock Yates One Lap of America. Its founder, Brock Yates, is a former editor of Car and Driver Magazine. He also penned numerous books, served as a commentator at the BarrettJackson auctions and on ABC’s Wild World of Sports, and wrote movie screen plays including The Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit II. Throughout the 1960s, the domestic auto makers pumped out an array of high performance cars, and each year the offerings grew increasingly potent. Those in the market for one of these new street screamers sought to educate themselves by reading the magazines of the day, so it was a good time to be in the automotive publishing business. In the early ‘70s, however, insurance companies, the Environmental Protection Agency, the first oil embargo, and the federally-mandated 55 MPH maximum speed limit all conspired to bring the muscle car era to a close. Faced with declining readership, Yates came up with an outlandish idea for a race across America called the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. It started in New York City and ended in Redondo Beach, Cal. Obviously, a three thousand mile race on public roads was illegal, but that was part of the allure. What better way for car enthusiasts to thumb their noses at the feds than to form a clandestine grassroots movement and dash across the continent at breakneck speed! The Cannonball was run four times that decade, and its coverage in C&D boosted circulation. In 1984 the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash evolved into the One Lap of America, and it has been held annually ever since. In its revised format, participants drive their cars around the country while making time trials at numerous racetracks. The event lasts just one week and it includes several thousand road miles, roughly a dozen on-track trials, and very little sleep. A grueling week for sure, it offers

Steve’s Auto Supply Car Show
8
Never Out of Style
The National Automotive Parts Association (NAPA) is a name associated with serving the automotive community for over 85 years. NAPA Auto Parts - Steve’s Auto Supply in Pittsgrove, N.J., recently held their second annual car show to thank the car community for their support. Music was provided by John “The Friar” of WVLT 92.1 FM, and the event included free food. Every car owner received a bucket of auto supplies as a special thanks for coming out to the event.
There is an old quote attributed to Henry Ford about selecting a vehicle: “You can have any color as long as it is black.” To back up Ford’s droll remark, many car owners will agree that black is a sleek color with class. There is no doubt that black, when painted with gloss, shimmers with a depth seeming 10 feet deep. Here are a few rides that have that black glow and depth.

Rollin’ Rods Car Cruise
Home Depot Father’s Day Car Show
When you mention long-lasting, established car clubs in the street rod scene in the southern portion of New Jersey, then the name Rollin’ Rods will usually come up. This enthusiastic group of car owners has been an active organization for many years and has established itself in the car community as a club that stages fun events. As a matter of fact, check out their “Funtastic Rod Run” on Sept. 6 at Belleview Winery in South Jersey. Recently they held their Pep Boys Cruise in Audubon, N.J., and from the turnout and feeling of car camaraderie, you knew it was another great evening for car owners to enjoy.
Father’s Day is that day out of the year when many dads receive a tie or gift card. However, sometimes dads will get a cool treat on their day – like a car show and celebration at the Home Depot located in Vineland, N.J. This year’s show was held in collaboration with the South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Club. The show had many great displays for the whole family to come out and enjoy, from karate demonstrations to free food for everyone. The stars of the event, of course, were the cars. All rides were welcome and Home Depot sent out a team of experts to judge the top eight rides. Car shows are family fun events where everyone can check out classy and fine cars. On Father’s Day weekend, this particular show held a special significance as a tribute to all the dads out there.

Trains & Automobiles Car guys and gals seem to have an affinity for anything that can transport people. Car shows attached to air events go hand-in-hand, and of course that goes for trains, too. The historic Richland Village nestled in the heart of Southern New Jersey was host to a community festival that had a lot focus on local businesses and, in particular, railroads. Not just any rail line but two very special rail features in the village. The first one is the model train display known as the Patcong Rail Road. This display is awesome if you enjoy model trains. The second train exhibit, the Cape May Seashore Line Train, ferries passengers on a roundtrip from Richland Village to a town called Tuckahoe. So when the South Jersey Mustang Club is called in to have a car show on top of this community festival, you can bet that car owners will come out. Nearly 300 rides participated in this fun event. The club also donated funds to the New Jersey Veterans Home. Trains, planes and automobiles always are a great matchup for a car event and this car show was proof positive of this. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 10

Riverfront Camaro Show Camaro owners are a special group of car enthusiasts. Their devotion to General Motor’s pony car continues on without question. One such group of Camaro enthusiasts hails from the great state of Delaware and that is the Delaware Valley Camaro Club. These guys and gals have Camaro blood coursing through their veins. The local Camaro community has been fortunate to have a Camaro show that brings a gathering of the faithful together each June. This year was no exception. Enthusiasts came from five states came with more than 150 cars to enjoy a day of Chevy pony car eye-candy in the very picturesque redeveloped shipyards of Delaware. The Pontiac Firebird crowd were also included in this event. You can bet that clubs like the DVCC help insure that all the generations of Camaros, both past and present, will be well promoted at their show and the Camaro spirit will continue on. If you like to get to know the club and see more great Camaro participants’ photos, visit them on line at delawarevalleycamaro.com. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Pete Jamieson

Badges, Emblems, Logos While at a car dealership I was looking at the various badges and emblems that today’s manufactures put on their cars. They are, in a few words, kind of boring. New cars seem to have more stickers than ornate chrome identification. I call this the Zen look. You have to concentrate on what company manufactured some of the cars. So when I went to a car show I decided to look at badges, emblems and logos to see how many companies put into a brand or model identification over the years. Some were quite detailed in design and some evolved into the decal look. Cost, changing artistic tastes, and the new generation of thought causes the identification of cars to be, perhaps, less focused on logos. You can be the judge of how you like your manufacturers to identify their rides.

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey Gang,
We are in mid-season, and the shows and cruises have been outstanding so far. And the weather hasn’t been too bad, either. If you’re not sure where to go, check out our show and cruise section in this issue, and you will know after reading that. Have you readers heard the term “the 1 percenters”? It refers to the people in our society who have more money than they know what to do with. That’s a good issue to have, but if they call me, I can help them with their so called problem. Now, let’s talk car clubs. We have what is so affectionately known as the “10 percenters.” What’s that? Well, I can tell you it’s not the 10 wealthiest members of your club, it’s not the top 10 cars in your club, or the first 10 members that joined your club, but rather these 10 percenters are the gogetters, the worker bees, the ones who volunteer, the ones who go above and beyond. Each and every organization that you have ever been part of has 10 percenters. Think about your role; were you a 10 percenter or just a wallflower? So why have the car club presidents coined this phrase? All club members in every organization play a role, for some it’s a small role for others it’s a larger role. Many car club officers have noted that their membership exceeds 100, however they only ever see 30 or 40 members from time to time, and of that, only 10 or so will really help out. Car club presidents and officers cannot do it all. They need the help of the guys and gals who choose to join that club. So one may ask: why do only 10 percent of members become active in clubs, or for that matter, why do they even join a club if they are not going to get involved? They are tough questions but I can give you my take on at least one issue. First off, the 10 percent will constantly rotate – those who were involved heavily at one time have now become older and they just want to relax and step back. That means the next generation should now step up. However it will take motivation from club officers to assemble that next group of 10 percenters. Being involved with many organizations over the years has shown me that there will never be “50 percenters” because of too many personality conflicts. Second part: why do you join a club if you’re not going to get involved? Frankly folks, I believe that will be much better answered by the club member, who is sitting in their lawn chair behind the car at a show. Club members should think about participating. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Yes, fun! Let’s all remember that.

CRUISING 101 SHIFTINGGEARS
Hi Gang, I know many of you have noticed that I have not been at many events so far this season, and when I have shown up, I disappear after a little while. Well, I’m sorry about that, but like most enthusiasts in our hobby, old age is screwing with me. My legs retain fluid, and hurt, so I stay home. The Flower Car is still in the works and should be at the Millville Show and the Cedarville Show. The events I have attended, though, have been very good; Vineland’s Cruise Down Memory Lane was well run, and the turnouts have been in high numbers also. And of course, more and more cars are coming out of the woodwork. Sometime you just have to wonder “did manufacturers make this many?” But we’ve all seen the stories on Facebook about the “finds” AMC Dealership abandoned, Nascar discovered in a barn, and many more unbelievable stories. Hey, someone’s gotta have the luck. The heart of summer is here. Keep the water flowing at the events, because as we get older, the heat puts more strains on our bodies, and after a few hours of 95 degree heat, most of us look for that cooler with the frozen bottles of water in it. When you are at an event, keep an eye open not only for the other car owners but also the spectators – we’ve even offered cold water to some k-9s walking on hot roadways or parking lots. How many times have you been happy to find an air conditioned trail to step in to cool off the toes? By the way, if you were unable to get us a flyer in time for printing, send it to me so I can post your event on the Cruising site (including changes like rain dates). It’s free. Hopefully we’ll see each other at future events!

ecently, I read about the world’s first-ever speeding ticket: issued in New York City, it was given to a taxi driver in an electric car in 1899. The speed limit was 8 MPH. I marvel at how policemen figured out the speed in a time when there were no speedometers and radar guns to monitor the pace. I grew up in the quaint city of Vineland, N.J., in the 1960s. This time period was arguably considered the beginning of the muscle car era. The Pontiac GTO for 1964 is (arguably, again) generally considered the first performance ride. Well, as each manufacturer saw the need to make a faster ride, the urge arose to test these rides like the old Western fastdraw approach – to meet someone at the outskirts of town and have a contest on who is the faster person on the draw…err, gas pedal. Enter the street racer. Now I dabbled in racing a few times, but only on the track in the community of Pleasantville, N.J. I ran the eight-mile in my new 1968 Chevelle. I won a few races and went home. It was fun and easy and most of all it was safe. Supervised speed events in an environment that promoted a passion to go fast is important. Today, the need to go fast in a straight line is limited to a few race tracks here in New Jersey, located in Atco and Englishtown. These are two great tracks and two places to race under safe conditions. Now, getting back to street racing. I recall back in the day of my early driving experiences that the local fast cars would meet on certain roads in the outskirts of town. The buzz would be “see you at Sherman Avenue – ” among other locations in town “ –at 10 p.m. for the run.” We would go to this “safe,” “empty” road and watch from the woods on either side of the race or wherever the vantage point allowed. There were no bleachers, guard rails or safety fences to protect spectators in the event of an accident. There were no fire trucks or ambulances on the ready. Besides, we had to look out for the police. There was a white line painted at the quarter mile mark. What could go wrong in a fun event? Well, one night something went terribly wrong and a young man lost his life when his car flipped on its side. As he tried to get out of the vehicle, the car’s weight shifted and fell on him. No safety crew, ambulance or rescue truck. I do not feel racing on the street is the way to go. It’s glamorized in the movies and on television. As a matter of fact, I find the TV version too extreme. They seem to stereotype the street racers as guys wearing black t-shirts with their hats on backwards and needing a shave on their chins. They also run all cars on “safe” streets. Really? Racing is a serious activity. It’s also a form of fun, too. Make your choices on running your ride at a sanctioned track. Sometimes you can bet your life “safety first” is important.
