A CAR’S LIFE

Writer Frank Adkins in his ‘68 Dodge Dart GT at the Newark, Del. Chrysler Plant, before its doors closed in 2009.

Our author reflects on the memories and transitions of his favorite ride and speculates about its future

By Frank Adkins

T

here are some patterns in the automotive hobby that seem to be repeated with each generation. First, the cars we are drawn to are those that made impressions on us when we were very young. Those cars, and the pivotal moments during which the memories associated with them were etched into our minds, provide the foundation for one’s life-long infatuation with similar models. Second, after making memories with our own cars as teens and young adults, most of us part ways with our special cars. Although our reasons vary, the sense of loss and the desire to fill that void can stay with us for the rest of our lives. And so it is that many folks nearing retirement age tap their 401Ks to finally fill that void by buying a life-size token of their youth. I was born in 1965. I was too young to participate in the heyday of the muscle car, but I witnessed it frequently. Impromptu stoplight drags were common on Kirkwood Highway and there were dozens of cool cars in the neighborhood where I grew up. They included a ’68 Charger R/T, a couple of Olds 442s, Mustangs, Chevelles, GTOs, Camaros, a Marlin, a Challenger R/T convertible, and others. Each was parked within easy bicycling distance of my house, so I could view any of them at any time.

6

Although I remember each of these cars four decades later, there was one that grabbed my heart every time I saw it. Around the corner from my house lived an older gentleman who had a ’69 Dart GTS convertible. It was white with a red interior and black top, and it was powered by a 340 with a console-shifted automatic transmission. It sat outside, but he kept it shiny and spotless. For some inexplicable reason, the rumble of that 340 through its stock exhaust resonated with me. No matter what I was doing, when I heard that distinctive exhaust note I would stop and stare in awe as the Dart rolled past. I wanted that car, but it changed hands when I was fifteen. Its second owner was a kid a couple of years older than I. Three years later he sold it and I haven’t seen it since. In 1968, my aunt and uncle purchased a new ’68 Dart GT. Equipped with a 273 cubic inch V-8 and column-shifted automatic, it served them well for many years. In 1977 they handed the keys to my cousin Becky. She and her younger brothers, my cousins Richard and David, all drove it hard. Finally, it came into my possession in 1983 after the 273 had expired. It was tattered and rusty, but I was determined to breathe new life into it. No, it wasn’t a GTS, but it was as close as I could come. Besides, having participated in some of my cousins’ adventures in the Dart, I had already grown quite fond of it.

Adkins, at age 18, stands proudly beside his ‘68 Dodge Dart GT.

I was a senior in high school, but I knew the following year I would be commuting to an automotive school some distance away. The car had to be reliable, but it also had to achieve respectable fuel mileage. A Slant Six would serve my needs better than even a small V-8. Furthermore, I wanted a manual transmission. Initially I transplanted a stock six cylinder and three-speed manual transmission, but what 18-year-old would be satisfied for long with such an anemic arrangement? Soon it received another engine that I’d built in school and a four-speed. Crane offered a couple of nice cams for the Slant Six, so I chose the one best suited for my application. The stock exhaust gave way to headers and dual exhaust, and I ditched the one-barrel carburetor for a two-barrel, and later a four-barrel. According to the ancient chassis dynamometer at the school, I had exactly doubled the stock 145 horsepower rating of the Slant Six, and I was still able to achieve well over 20 MPG. Oh, the memories I made with this car! Many I cannot share here even though I’m sure the statute of limitations have now long-expired. To say that I drove the Dart exuberantly would be a gross understatement; to say that I treated it kindly would be a flat-out lie. But I loved the car. In fact, unlike most of my friends, I never parted with it. My Dart has seen me through every major transition in my life, and much of my best thinking has taken place with my fingers grasping the wheel and shifter. Due to its amateur bodywork and paint that I applied nearly a quarter of a century ago it is not the prettiest car in our garage, but it is the one that means the most to me. Racking up a couple of hundred miles over a day or two knocks years off my age; the further I drive, the younger I become. That said, in recent years I haven’t driven it much. Although it pains me to admit, the cars we own that have V-8s and four-speeds are more capable all-around drivers. The Dart fits me better than my worn and faded Levis, but in its current configuration the Six has a peaked torque curve. Its manners are far different from those of its larger displacement counterparts. For the strong forward thrust that so many of us crave, it’s hard to beat the mid-range grunt of a V-8. Gas mileage is of less a concern now than when I was 18. It has accumulated 307,000 miles, but I retired the Dart from daily use thirty years ago. It has been on a collector car insurance policy for nearly as long. But there is a deeper issue. I know I won’t live forever. After I turn the key for the last time, I hope my car falls into the hands of somebody who will cherish it as I do. I also know

that most people scoff at Slant Sixes, even modified ones. The next owner would likely view my car as a blank slate upon which he can build. If I want my family to succeed in placing it with an owner who will enjoy it and preserve it, and who will not radically modify it, I have to make it appeal to such a buyer. Here is where I’m conflicted. It’s still my car, and it will remain so for the foreseeable future. I don’t want to build it to suit somebody else. I want it to suit my taste. It is an extension of me and it represents my history. With its modified Slant Six, four-speed, manual steering, manual disc brakes, and electronic ignition (all of which I retrofitted) it does that quite well. I can only hope it will still feel like my old familiar friend after I have supplanted the Six with a V-8. The funny thing is that on some level it might seem I’d planned to go back to a V-8 all along, for I never swapped in the proper six cylinder K-frame. Instead, I fabricated a right side motor mount that would mate the Slant Six to the existing V-8 K-frame. More than a year ago a friend made me a deal on a tired 340 that had been in his barn since the ‘80s. I rebuilt it and I’m now in the process of swapping it into the Dart. Removing each piece of the former combination has unleashed a flood of memories. I was reminded of trial-and-error fitting the current six-into-one header on my 30th birthday a month before my first wife and I separated in 1995. I remember cursing and fighting with the home-brewed clutch linkage while modifying it further to work with each of the three header combinations I’d run over the years. There was also a night in 1985 when said clutch linkage fell apart as I rolled toward the starting line at Cecil County Dragway. More importantly, I am reminded of the friends who worked on the car with me at various times. So many great stories! Such great history! How important is it that I’m erasing so much of it? Does anybody care but me? I don’t believe in living in the past, but I do believe it’s healthy to look back from time to time in order to regain one’s footing before moving forward. My wife and I have been empty-nesters for some time, and we now have four grandchildren. Recently, one has shown a keen interest in cars. I feel that I owe it to him to immerse him in the automotive culture. Already he has logged some seat time in our GTX and in his Mimi’s Duster, but I feel he should become acquainted with the Dart too since it has been a big part of our family. For that to happen, I need to drive it more, and the addition of the 340 will motivate me to do so. As our grandkids grow older and I become more involved in their activities, fulfilling my role as their grandfather, it is fitting for my Dart to play a significant role in this next phase of my life. Perhaps I am erasing some artifacts of my history by swapping out the Slant Six, but by involving the next generation I will write new history in its place. Cruisin’ Main Street in Downtown Hammonton

All-Jeep Show

America has changed a great deal in regard to shopping. The large malls seem to have taken their share of customers from the small-town shopping areas. Back in the day these small, hometown centers of commerce were more than just a place to shop, they were also social gatherings. It seems safe to say that many communities are returning to their economic roots by teaming up with the members of the car community. The city of Hammonton, N.J. and the Cruisin’ Classics Car Club teamed up to stage a cruise right in the center of town. The main thoroughfare is Belleview Avenue and it is the location of the “Cruisin’ Main Street” event. This cruisers’ evening saw hundreds of rides come out to enjoy the stores and eateries in the center of town. Watching people meet and greet each other was a great reminder that our communities and their hometown shopping areas (along with car cruises) are still a special American tradition.

Jeep. When a person hears this brand name, they know that it’s one that has been a part of the American car culture for nearly 70 years. This rugged ride served our country in times of conflict and peace. When it started to get into the hands of the public, it did not take long for people to see that it was a ride that could go from rugged to sophisticated at the owner’s whim. There is a dedicated group of Jeep enthusiasts from the heart of Southern New Jersey who celebrated their Jeep club’s 20th anniversary with a super show. The Tainos Jeep Club staged their “King of the Jeeps” show at a tranquil park in South Vineland, N.J. These rides were not your run-in-the-mud vehicles. They were an example of Jeeps at their finest. The quality and refinement of these rides was second to none with 120 Jeeps on display. Like all fun events, music filled the air – along with the aroma of freshly-cooked food. It was a family-oriented day that also paid tribute to the club’s founder, Salvador Cortez. The club used the event to donate their 50/50 to the Children’s Hospital of St. Jude.

Nifty Fifty’s Cruise

Under the Horse Cruise

Some of you may remember the days when you would go to a family restaurant and have a malted milkshake or a burger and fries as well as a lot of other traditional American food. Many of these places were painted in pastel colors and some had the traditional red and white ceramic tiles on the walls with a jukebox ready to collect your dimes and quarters. The members of the Blacktop Villains Car Club based in the Turnersville area of Southern New Jersey appreciates those memories of yesterday, too. As a matter of fact, they worked a great arrangement with the Nifty Fifty’s restaurant in Turnersville to have a cruise every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month through November. At Nifty’s, you get to dine in a ‘50s era restaurant and you can even have a great game of miniature golf at this location. The Blacktop Villains Car Club definitely wants cruisers to enjoy those gatherings of way-back-when and chose the perfect location to share those memories with fellow cruisers.

The South Jersey Street Legends Car Club based in Lawnside, N.J., is a relatively new club dedicated to having fun and promoting the classic car hobby. Now don’t let the thought of a new organization fool you into thinking these fine guys and gals are also new to the cruising scene. Believe me, they are a seasoned group of muscle car and classic car cruisers that are no strangers to putting on events. One of their premier events is their “Under the Horse Cruise” in Lawnside. The reason for its unique name? It’s located at the Shop Rite parking area near the overpass of the White Horse Pike. A fitting name for a fun cruise and a great place to meet and greet fellow cruisers. The club stages the cruises every Friday. Fourth Fridays feature trophies awarded to participants. The fun lasts into November. Cool rides, fun and car camaraderie is a Friday night happening that all makes and models of rides can enjoy.

In The Garage

Classic Cruisers 2nd Annual Car Show The sights and fragrances - as well as the sounds we enjoy on a beautiful summer day in the scenic backwoods of New Jersey - are so relaxing. Colors only nature could inspire like green, red, metallic blue, gold…they are priceless. Oh, did I say that these colors are on the cars that took part in the first annual Classic Cruisers of South Jersey car show at the Good Sports Gun Club? Over 150 rides came out and had a chance to enjoy a delicious gun club breakfast and home-style cooking. Music filled the air with the tunes of DJ Dave Summers. Yes, car shows in the Jersey pines just seem to go together with Mother Nature. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 10

There should be a television program dedicated to following the average car enthusiast when they are working on a car in their garage. Many times they are not always on a deadline or large budget. Most of the time there is the desire to be a hands-on builder or to build on an economical basis. The backbone of our hobby is this: the guy and gal that go out into the garage, shed or chicken coop sometimes, in less-than-perfect conditions. They work alone or with a friend. They may work on a budget that is sometimes based on the next side job or sale of a few parts here and there. Yes, reality is that the average car builder keeps the hobby alive through his or her own ingenuity and resources and just does not have big name sponsors to keep them afloat. They don’t have a script, but they do have the spirit of the build in their hearts. This is a reality program that is truly missing for television. Here are a few fellow car guys that I caught on camera getting down to business on their rides and helping others. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Hey Gang, There have been some fantastic shows and cruises already this season with many more yet to come. Grab the family, hop in the car, put the top down and let your hair flow in the wind as you travel to the next show. Summer is just a great time of the year so enjoy it while it lasts because it sure goes by fast. A few years ago Tony Sceia, Ben Notaro and I put together a round table of local car club presidents to discuss issues in the hobby. Well, it has been very difficult to continue having these meetings for a variety of reasons. The biggest reason is the change in leadership with the many clubs in the area. Every year got harder to keep up with current presidents, the disbanding clubs, the new clubs and the groups who just get together to have fun. I have been the president of the Nostalgia Knights car club for several years now. I can see why presidents change so often, it is difficult to keep fresh ideas year after year. On the other side of the coin I can also see why clubs or organizations go by the wayside. If you take a poll of classic car club members you will probably find that 99.9 percent want nothing to do with being an officer in the club, let alone being president. Choosing a good leader will produce good results, however, bad politics in car clubs will destroy that club if one is not careful. Over the last couple of years I have seen some good local car clubs disband because of bad politics and that’s a darn shame. You can’t imagine, unless you are in the position, what it takes to keep a car club running smoothly and personalities at bay, while producing shows and cruises and making decisions that will certainly not agree with all. Yes, the stress level is high which will put many presidents in burnout mode. When we were elected, our presidential contract offered no pay, no benefits, no vacation or sick days but we still accepted. I so far am very fortunate to have great club members who step up to the plate and help produce quality events throughout the year. I don’t know if many can say that. Here’s the bottom line in all this. If you choose to join a car club but want nothing to do with being an officer, then step up to the plate and help with anything you can do. Presidents and officers can use all the help they can get especially when shows and cruises are being presented. Obviously not everyone has it in them to be a leader, I get it, however, the same leader can’t go on forever, either, they will definitely get burned out. So, I raise the ultimate question: what does happen when your current officers decide enough is enough? Who will be there to take over and keep the club rolling? Most of the time, everyone looks the other way, but honestly folks, that can’t happen if you want the club to move on. We have all said that most clubs are made up of the generation that grew up with these cars, which makes us…tired. I suppose we need our youth to carry on a tradition that we love, however it may not be one that they love. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

This Jersey gal went to visit friends over the bridge in Wilmington, Del., for a neat car show. Tina Marabito, owner of Poppycock Tattoo Shop, held the 6th annual Wilmo a Go-Go car show. The day was filled w ith g reat c ars, b ands, p in-up g irls, a nd v endors. T he B roken R ods Car Club welcomed over 270 cars. There were three bands: The Twitching Witches, Black Flamingos and The Open Road Two playing traditional songs that got the crowd moving to the beat. There were beautiful gals from Heels for Combat Boots, the Delaware Chapter. The Heels for Combat Boots are a non-profit organization working to provide support and services to global armed forces personnel that suffer with PTSD/TBI. I am definitely joining up with this organization. The DJ for the day was The Professor. He is no stranger to traditional and rockabilly sounds. The proceeds from the show went to The Delaware Humane Association. Big thanks to Tina Marabito for putting on a great show. *I would like to make a correction from my last article. The name of Renee Didio’s vintage Brooklyn store, Slapback, was spelled wrong. You can check her out on Facebook (Slapback) and her website at slapbacknyc.com.

Kountry Kitchen Cruise If you are a certifiable car enthusiast and attend cruises and shows, you are very much aware that food is a part of the scene. No self-respecting event would forget to have some form of food for the participants to purchase. So how about a cruise at a landmark establishment? Located on Rt. 40 in Elmer, N.J., the Kountry Kitchen is a restaurant that has been around for over 50 years and has that early Americana vibe. You know, like the mom and pop roadside restaurants of way back when? So where does a car club go to have a down-home cruise in a town in a rural area? You guessed it! The members of the South Jersey region Antique Auto Club of America (ACCA) chose the Kountry Kitchen for a car-friendly gathering. Cruisers enjoyed a warm summer day relaxing at the restaurant and sharing time with 70-plus fellow cruisers. Cruising music filled the air as guys and gals relaxed in easy chairs and took to enjoying a beautiful day in summer. Oh, and by the way: they also enjoyed great vittles.

Hagley Car Show:

Barn finds and un-restored originals

T

ake a cruise back in time as the Hagley Car Show returns on Sunday, Sept. 18, featuring more than 500 antique and restored cars, trucks and motorcycles that date from the early 1900s through the 1980s. This year’s theme is “Barn Finds and Un-restored Originals,” and antique cars, which have remained virtually untouched over the years, will be featured. In the meantime, vehicle parades, a vintage jukebox display, video simulators, pedal car racing, and a festival food court will be part of the fun. The car show will take place in the area surrounding the first du Pont home, garden and barn – Eleutherian Mills. Register for the rain-or-shine show, which runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at hagley.org. Early registration closes on July 31, and late registration runs from Aug. 1-22, or when the show field is full, whichever comes first. Late registration requires an additional fee of $10 per vehicle. There is no registration fee for pre-1920 vehicles. All vehicles through 1991 are welcome, and general field cars do not have to be part of the feature display. Parking for Hagley’s Car Show will be on site at Hagley. Visitors can enter through Hagley’s main entrance off of Route 141. Tickets to the show will be offered in advance at the Hagley Store or on the website from Aug. 15-Sept. 13 (online) or Sept. 16 (store). Pre-event tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-14, and tickets purchased at the show will be $10 for adults and $5 for kids 6-14. Admission is free for Hagley members and children 5 and under. Visitors to Hagley have the opportunity to both enjoy the car show and have the opportunity to tour the du Pont home, garden, barn and First Office of DuPont, although the powder yards will not be open. For more information, call 302-658-2400 weekdays or visit the website.

all geared up 5th Beers & Gears set for Delaware Park Putting on car shows may be a family affair for Scott and Patricia Wolynetz, but their circle of friends has grown enormously since they began the Beers & Gears events at Delaware Park. Last year’s fall event drew 684 cars. The spring event drew more than 500, despite bad afternoon weather. Another big turnout is expected for the fifth Beers & Gears set for Saturday, Oct. 22 at Delaware Park (Stanton, Del.) and Scott Wolynetz insists there will be something for everyone. “This event is not just about winning awards (though 450 trophies will be awarded),” said Wolynetz, who has been putting on car events for the past 12 years. “Every car that attends gets something and there’s plenty to do for those who are just spectators.” This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date: Sunday, Oct. 23). Awards will be at 3:30 p.m. Features include craft beer tasting, live music, food trucks, vendors, casino access and family activities. There will be dash plaques for the first 500 cars, nine categories, a club participation award, paved parking and trailer parking available. Today, I’ve got a list of thoughts that happen to go against some of my “own rules,” to put it bluntly: 1. After a show or cruise has started and the organizers notice empty spaces without cars, would it hurt to let additional “iffy” vehicles in? Not for awards or anything – just to be nice and to improve aesthetics. 2. If somebody under the age of 17 builds a car, and if they can legally get it to the event, shouldn’t it be allowed in? We all say that we want to encourage the younger generation, so these situations are opportunities. 3. The average age of a car guy or gal is 55-65, so why should we expect the younger generation to have vehicles older than them? Let’s face it, how many times have we been laughed at when at a parts store and ask for a set of points, or a sealed beam? I’m just saying, times are changing – don’t be left in the past. “Same old” doesn’t work anymore. We’ve got to give our car owners and spectators something new, a reason to want to come back! 4. Keep things timely, especially in the summer. Who wants to be in a hot parking lot for five to six hours? If it’s a stifling, humid day, maybe get to the trophies early. The same goes for those who go to “nice fall events” where at about 3 p.m. the temperature drops 40 degrees. It’s time to go home. 5. When sitting around at shows, I often overhear a lot. One of the biggest gripes: trophies. Spread them out one to a person, make more people happy – and trophy for kids 17 and under might be a consideration. 6. For those who attend events, let’s give the people behind the events some credit. Well I hope I’ve given you a few items to consider, I am always approachable at shows. If you see my white and black caddy come by say “Hello” – hopefully I’ll be awake. If the caddy sounds like it’s running, it’s not – just me snoring! Hope to see you at one of the events.

I

usually endeavor to keep my columns light in nature and try to focus on the hobby in a positive way. Looking at the different components of the car hobby is like looking at a 10,000 piece puzzle. You look for the corners first and then start somewhere in the middle. As we read the calendar of events in Cruising magazine, flyers and websites, we are really lucky to have many cruises, shows and whatever to pick from. Our hobby is now very media-oriented. Even television now devotes a lot of programming to classic cars and event coverage. I recall when the few times you ever saw car shows on television, it was usually a national drag race on the Wide World of Sports. Today, there a great many programs to watch on television from shows on the History Channel and the Discovery Channel and (my favorite) the Velocity Channel. This cable channel is all cars and has a diverse format that you can look at in the car hobby. Now I enjoy making light jibes at some of the programs but there are some, that I will not name, that I really feel give cars guys and gals a blemish in the eyes of the non-classic car owner public. These shows focus on the quick flipping of cars. You know, buy them cheap and sell them high deal. On one such show, someone purchased a Chevy van at auction and upon inspection saw the front right panel was pretty badly caved in. Well, the program continues to show the van being repaired with about three pounds of bondo. When it received the new cover up the repair paint job, it looked really good. I do wonder how long the filler will last before it begins to show signs of stress. I also realize that by showing it on TV one can say that it was done for the viewers to see. But, and I say this sincerely, it seems to give the impression that car guys will doctor up a ride to any cheap extent to make a buck. Yes, there are those that do this. But, in my opinion, it just seems sleazy to make a TV show out of it. On the flip side of the coin there are shows that show the real craftsmanship and headaches that go into the rebuilding, restoring or creating of a classic car. They reflect the blood, sweat and tears of doing it right and showing the viewer that quality, in many cases, is an important aspect of the classic car hobby. In summation, every television show that we car crazies look at teaches us something. It shows us how to look for things that can affect build quality or caution in purchasing a car. These programs teach and also entertain. Whatever your preference in car TV programs happen to be, look at these shows and point out to the uninitiated that our hobby has many facets to it. Department of Fun: You can go to a cruise or a show almost seven days a week. The hobby is going strong. Department of Health: Wear sunblock if you’re sitting near your ride all day. Department of Defense: Don’t sit on de fence. Get out and cruise.
