By Frank Adkins ’ve often wondered how our old cars can evoke such a wide range of emotions from us. Even as non-living mechanical devices, they’re regarded as members of the family by car enthusiasts. We derive great pleasure from them, we pamper them like children and we mourn their absence when they are gone. We talk about them like grandchildren, dote over them
I
like parents and show them extra attention when they need it. Sometimes we bestow them with human-like qualities and we speak to them as if they can hear us. I also think most would agree that like family members, these inanimate objects are sometimes moody and can frustrate us to no end. How is it that our cars develop personalities? Of course it isn’t rational to believe that they do, but rational or not, most car enthusiasts can cite personal
6
experiences that support the idea. I have owned my blue ’68 Dart GT for 30 years and have had many such experiences. When my first wife and I were on our first date, the Dart—named Blue —developed an intermittent ignition problem that caused it to shut off unexpectedly. It didn’t strand us, but it threatened to wreck the evening. The condition turned out to be a faulty splice in a wire harness, but why did the issue pick that time to manifest itself? Courtship led to marriage and ultimately to divorce. In hindsight I wondered, was Blue trying to tell me something? A few years later, my then-girlfriend and I took Blue to an Ohio show. Several hours into the trip I was slowing to take the exit from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to continue on Rt. 70 West. As I started up the ramp I pushed the clutch and
grasped the shifter knob, but it wouldn’t budge. The transmission was locked in fourth gear! I coasted to the side of the road while shoving the knob forward, sweating and cursing. Several tense moments later it popped out of gear and resumed normal operation. The problem has never occurred again. Was Blue trying to tell me something about that girl, too? If so, in both cases the car’s intuition was spot-on. Shortly after my wife Kristy and I began dating we attended a cruise in Twin Oaks, Pa., which was more than an hour from my home. I’m happy to say Kristy passed Blue’s scrutiny and we have been happily married for nearly 15 years. On the morning of our wedding, Blue’s aging battery had died. I charged it and the car performed flawlessly all day, though I’m not sure how. After that day the battery wouldn’t accept a charge. Was this Blue’s way of confirming that I’d married the right woman? Additionally, folks with multiple cars sometimes speak of sibling rivalry. If one car receives too much attention, the others develop ailments as if to say, “Hey, what about me?” Then, there’s jealousy of people. My acquaintance Jim has owned a Monte Carlo since he was in high school. Although it hasn’t run in years, he built the car and drove it daily as a teen. On numerous occasions the car began behaving oddly after he talked to a girl. Eventually his friends began chiding him: “Face it Jim, your car doesn’t like girls.” As a youth I spent many evenings hanging out at the John Reed Garage near my childhood home west of Wilmington, Del. John Reed was a self-employed mechanic who usually worked alone in a simple one-story shop behind his house with no lift. He was a big man with a bigger heart and quick wit. When a car exhibited a problem that defied logic he’d shrug and say, “It’s an automobile; it’s got a mind of its own.” In 2008 Kristy and I looked at a ’68 Road Runner that had appeared at Daisey’s Used Cars, a classic car dealer near Georgetown, Del. Kristy wanted the car so badly she was willing to trade her cherished ’65 Mustang convertible for it. Although Mr. Daisey offered us fair money for the Mustang, we were unable to close the deal at that time. As we were leaving, the Mustang’s hairpin clip for the reverse shift rod popped out of place and the linkage fell to the ground, preventing me from shifting into reverse. Mr. Daisey smiled and said, “They know when you want to get rid of them.” Some cars seem to appreciate our efforts to mend them. It can’t be our imagination— the car really does run better after installing that piece of missing trim or repairing that damaged upholstery! Still, others thwart our efforts. Like folks nearing the end of their twilight years, it is as if they have given up on life. It seems that no amount of work, money or determination can overcome the car’s desire to die. If you fix one thing, three other things break. Or, inexplicably, the repairs you make don’t last. Some cars simply don’t like their owners, and many have the ability to overpower the human mind, sending rational people into fits of rage. My buddy Larry speaks of such a car, the Buick his mother once owned. His father had invested far more time and money in that car than it deserved, and one day he reached his limit. In the driveway he sat behind the wheel staring over the long hood, his face contorted in a maniacal grin, as he held the accelerator to the floor until the engine blew. Another friend, Rob, has started a number of small businesses over the years. His father worked for him at his shop in Newark, Del. One day a customer returned with his problemriddled car that had been driving everyone crazy for months. Imagine Rob’s horror when he walked into the shop later that morning and found his normally mild-mannered father beating the carburetor to bits with a hammer!
Mike, another friend, purchased a solid ’69 Plymouth Belvedere four-door from Alabama and built it as a replica of a Los Angeles police car. The Belvedere was powered by a high mileage 318 that hemorrhaged oil from the rear main seal, but the LAPD Plymouths were typically powered by 383s. He found a ’69 Chrysler Newport parts car with a 383. He removed the engine and transmission, rebuilt them and installed them in his Belvedere. Today he has one of the nicest LAPD cars in the country and he has garnered numerous awards. What makes this story noteworthy is that Mike was once a cop, and he was run over by a car while on duty. Now living in constant pain he has limited use of his legs due to his severe back injury. He has undergone numerous operations and procedures and is now facing another major surgery that will further reduce his mobility, but hopefully lessen his chronic pain. His car is something of an anomaly in that it remains uncooperative, resisting his efforts to improve it. Numerous problems have arisen over the last couple of years. Most have been minor annoyances, but not all. During a long trip last summer a strange cooling system issue arose, leading to overheating, and finally a blown head gasket. He removed the heads (no small feat for him!), had them checked and resurfaced, and reinstalled them. He also installed a new reproduction exhaust system. Now the engine runs rough despite no apparent problems with the ignition system, and it backfired so violently that it split the seam in one of the new mufflers. The e-mail I received from him a couple of days ago was titled, “I’ve Had It!” and the message was peppered with heart-felt expletives. We’ve all been there, and I know I’ve cursed every car I’ve ever owned as well as most of the ones I’ve worked on for other people. Pinpointing and curing their ailments can frustrate you to the point of biting your wrenches in two! Cars are nuts and bolts machines, and as with all mechanical devices, their parts do eventually break or wear out. But if you subscribe to the notion that they have spirits and that some are inherently obstinate, at what point do we surrender to them and admit defeat? No matter how fond we might be of a particular car, each of us has a breaking point. How much aggravation can you withstand? Perhaps more importantly, what should you do when your car drives you to the brink of madness? Blowing up engines and smashing carburetors are obviously counter-productive actions no matter how good they might feel in the heat of the moment. Avoid picking up the gas can and matches—you’ll regret it! Seriously, when you find that your patience, available time and/or finances have been depleted by a seemingly ungrateful automobile, what should you do? Walk away. That’s right, walk away. You need a cool-down period because you can’t think clearly when you are at the height of frustration. Any decision you make will likely be the wrong one. Even if you don’t set the car ablaze, storming into the house and hammering an ad on Craigslist or eBay while you are angry might be a reaction you’ll regret later. Too often people say, “Man, I should have never sold that car.” If you think of your car as an entity, the cool-down period gives it a chance to reconsider its actions as well. Like breaking a horse, after passing the crisis point you may find the car more cooperative and appreciative of your efforts. But if you and your car’s differences cannot be reconciled, maybe you’d both be happier if you part company.
“Some cars simply don’t like their owners, and many have the ability to overpower the human mind, sending rational people into fits of rage.”

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS
2nd Annual Millville H.S. Car Show High school – the institution we invest our time in to pursue the ultimate educational goal: earning that diploma. You know the drill. Go to various classes and take electives and all that good stuff. Now let’s look at another, less academic side of high school. In this case, the school is Millville Senior High School in Millville, N.J. For the second year in a row, the Millville School staff put on a great car show to benefit the senior class. The show’s proceeds went to the Project Graduation fund which provides a safe graduation night environment for students. This year’s show had more than 100 car owners come out to win trophies, enjoy a cool DJ and help a good cause. It’s a safe bet that when the show was over, the students attested to their school’s cool factor.
Home Depot Father’s Day Car Show Father’s Day is the one day a year reserved for the man who wears the title of “Dad.” When you see a home improvement store commercial, it’s usually aimed at men and their seemingly endless tasks of using tools in the house and for fixing the car or whatever needs to be repaired. It’s only fitting that the Vineland Home Depot decided to pay tribute to Dad’s special day with a Father’s Day car show, which drew a large crowd. This event was great for Dad to relax and not have to man the BBQ grill, to take out the classic and soak up the sun. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

A Show at the Shore Sea Isle City, a quaint Jersey Shore community, hosts a family event each year called the Skimmer Weekend, which coincides with Father’s Day. This year, participants were treated to a Saturday celebration of food and summertime shore activities, and on Sunday a car show celebrated Father’s Day. Sea Isle City has a paved promenade that parallels the beach, and the cars were displayed on the walkway. There were more than 100 cars vying for trophies. With a beautiful day and the shoreline backdrop, it would be safe to say that everyone was a winner. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
22nd Annual Cruise Down Memory Lane It’s a good bet that almost every community with a cruise running on its main street is inspired by the Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, Mich., the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic car culture, which draws more than one million visitors annually. Vineland also has its own, 22-year cruise that covers a good distance and draws about 15,000 people: Cruise Down Memory Lane. This year, the cruise on June 8 drew nearly 1,500 car owners who came out for live music, entertainment and a one-mile cruise down Vineland’s Landis Avenue. South Jerseys number one oldies radio station, WVLT 92.1 FM broadcasted the cruise, giving off an American Graffiti vibe for those tuned in. This year, the city’s event was coordinated by the South Jersey Cruisers Association and the South Jersey Mustang Club and sponsored by the Golden Corral Restaurant. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Final Touch There is something about the air cleaner on a car that is simply a temptation for owners to add a little something extra when displaying their car. It could be just about anything from a custom-made model to a cartoon character. One’s imagination has no limits. Here are a few accessories that Detroit did not offer for their engine dress-up options. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Steering At You www.RobsRodShop.com 131 Wallace Ave. #5 Downingtown, PA 19335 484-693-0640
The first thing that greets the driver in his or her car is the steering wheel. Let’s face it, it’s how we maneuver the car from one direction to the other. So I decided to look at the many steering wheels found on cars and I soon realized that many of them have a personality of their own. They can be a plain rim with some wood or plastic trim or have enough controls to make you think you are on a spaceship. Check out these wheels and see how they make a statement all on their own. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Carlisle Events at Full Throttle Car & truck enthusiasts gather for national events Things are revving up at Carlisle Events with a half-dozen major events slated to take place the next few weeks. Get your motors running because there’s a lot to see from Carlisle Events this August. Taking pole position is the Carlisle Truck Nationals. This annual event brings together more than 37,000 truck enthusiasts to peruse the wide selection of trucks and vendors. In addition, the Carlisle Truck Nationals will feature live music, a swap meet, a plethora of industry specific vendors, an off-road course for truck owners, and a truckload of… trucks! This year’s event runs August 2-4 at the Carlisle, Pa; Fairgrounds. Admission is $10 for adults on Friday and Saturday, $5 for adults on Sunday, and children under 12 are admitted free all weekend. The Bloomsburg Nationals are following at a close second on Carlisle Events’ August leaderboard. The 2013 Bloomsburg Nationals welcomes any make, model, or machine to be a part of the show and last year’s event brought in nearly 1,000 display vehicles and thousands of spectators. In addition to automotive creations, the weekend event will host a wing-eating competition, parade, street party, burnout competition, beauty contest, and live music with Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods. This year’s event will be parked on the Bloomsburg (Pa.) Fairgrounds from Aug. 9-11. Admission is $10 for adults all weekend, and children under 12 are admitted free. Next up is Corvettes at Carlisle, the world’s most popular Corvette event, set for Aug. 23-25. This year’s event will feature a variety of exclusive Corvettes and Corvette insiders, including the 1963 “Asteroid” Corvette. This is an extremely rare
custom-built Corvette from automotive legend George Barris for speedboat racer Bob Nordskog. Corvettes at Carlisle will also boast a colorful cast of guests. Patrons will be given the chance to meet Peter Brock, the man behind the ’63 “split window” Corvette Stingray and one of the youngest designers ever hired by GM in 1957. Those in attendance will also be able to meet the Corvette Engineering team as well as the chief engineer for Corvette from 1975–1992, Dave McLellan, perhaps best known for his work on the C4 Corvette. You know by now that the Chip’s Choice display in 2013 will feature 63 ‘63s. Many are available to review on Facebook right now. As part of this display, you can see the one and only Corvette Rondine concept car. This car was built for the Paris Auto Show and since its birth until at least 2008, was on display at the Pininfarina Museum in Italy. At that point, the car was sold at the famed BarrettJackson Scottsdale (Arizona) auto auction. What really makes this car special is that it is the only steel-bodied Corvette ever created. In addition, the car is based on the ‘63 Corvette chassis and has a 327cid/360-hp V8 under the hood. Admission to Corvettes at Carlisle is $15 for adults or $35 for full-event passes granting early access Thursday, Aug. 22. Sunday tickets are only $7 for adults and children under 12 are admitted for free all weekend. The Jersey Shore, Mother’s Day and a Car Show Dad may be an avid car guy who enjoys classic car shows, while Mom might love the sights and sounds of the ocean. Now, let’s add another factor; it’s Mother’s Day weekend. Perfect. Mom and Dad can have an outing that has something for everyone: a trip to the Jersey Shore for the Wildwood Car Show. This event started with a Thursday night cruise to a local restaurant, complete with a police escort and buffet for the participants. Friday and Saturday were filled with hundreds of great rides on the boardwalk. The weekend culminated into a Sunday morning award ceremony that even had trophies made to resemble wave-skimming boogie boards. It’s a “shore” time for fun for Mom’s special weekend…and, yes, for Dad too.
DROP TOPS On the open road, the feel of the wind whipping through your hair as you stare at the sky is freeing. The early car makers realized that a topless car has a special appeal. Convertibles just seem to make a statement about a carefree, let-my-hair-blow-in-the-wind lifestyle. Cruising with the convertible top down is still a nice weather activity for the car guys and gals. So when the temperature feels just right, it’s a lot of fun to cruise topless. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

A Wilmington Classic Annual Hagley Car Show to spotlight American high-performance cars One of the biggest displays of antique and restored cars in the area takes place on Sunday, Sept. 15, as the Hagley Car Show returns to Hagley Museum and Gardens. More than 500 cars, trucks and motorcycles will be on display. This year’s special feature is American manufacturer’s high-performance cars. These automobiles had additions done to them over their base models to improve their performance and enhance styling characteristics. Changes and options included engine, chassis, suspension, wheels, and body components. High-performance cars that will be on display include a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette, 1965 Pontiac GTO, 1967 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible, 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302, and a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. In addition to perusing the antique trucks and cars on display, visitors can also try pedal-powered go-kart racing and NASCAR simulator, watch vehicle parades, enjoy motoring music and festival food, and delight in walking around a room full of fabulous operating vintage jukeboxes. Parking for Hagley’s Car Show will be on site at Hagley. Visitors can enter through Hagley’s main entrance off of Route 141. Wristbands to the show will be offered in advance at the Hagley Store or www.hagley.org from August 15 through September 12 (online) or September 13 (store). Pre-event wristbands are $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-14. Wristbands purchased at the car show will be $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-14. Admission is free for Hagley members and children ages 5 and under. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information, call (302) 658-2400 weekdays or visit www.hagley.org. — Photos courtesy of Hagley Museum & Library
Cruising Main Street Hammonton There is something special about a car cruise on a lovely spring evening. As a cruiser sits in his or her travel chair and watches the cars pulling into the cruise, it’s like watching a parade of yesterday’s memories travel past you in the form of early rides from back in the day. Twice a year in the community of Hammonton, N.J., the Cruisin’ Classics Auto Club hold their “Cruising Main Street” event in the heart of the city’s downtown area. This cruise features hundreds of cars and enthusiasts coming out to enjoy an evening of cool cars, DJs and dining on the main street of this quaint community. It’s always a special treat to talk to fellow cruisers, enjoy a pleasant evening and share an appreciation for classic rides. Cruisin’ Classics Auto Club, like many groups across America, keeps those memories of yesterday in hometown America very much alive. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey gang, I have been questioned about the purpose of our “Presidents Roundtable” and what we accomplish at these meetings. In fact, I have been told that it seems as though many of the clubs are still holding events on the same day throughout the season, so why are we “wasting” our time. Certainly everyone has the right to their opinion and I don’t dispute the fact that some weeks events do end up on top of each other, but one must first understand all the facts before making the assumption that our meetings are a waste of time. I would like everyone to know that these meetings are still in the infancy stages and we are looking to grow into a more polished organization. We are trying our best to improve and make adjustments, and in time, we will get there. Obviously, the more players, the better the result. Some players don’t play well in the sandbox and choose to remain status quo. That’s fine, and I respect everyone’s opinion, but don’t knock us for what we’re trying to do. We need to look back many years ago when “Inter-club” and “Showfinder” meetings started. These events were held in the first quarter of the year. Wellestablished organizations have their plans made in the last quarter of the previous year. Never to my knowledge did existing clubs exchange dates prior to publishing fliers for the upcoming year. So, the question is, how did we make it happen back then? First off there were a lot less organizations, church events, schools, car dealers, municipalities, casinos, restaurants and organized clubs to deal with. Secondly, fewer events were held or even advertised and fewer places were interested in having classics on display. Fast forward to today – cruises every night, dozens of shows on Saturdays with another dozen on Sundays. There are only so many weekends during show season, and we must not forget Mother Nature. Rain cancels an event, and naturally, rain dates will jump to the date of someone else’s event. My point: coordination is not only a big word, but it’s a big task. Frankly, I can tell you for a fact that when our club has an event on the same date as another club or organization, there are many of our members who support the other event rather than ours. I can also tell you that it happens the other way around, too. I suppose you can’t make everyone happy, but it’s important to remember that this hobby is not a business. It’s supposed to be our stress relief from a hard day at work. I have not met the “perfect” person or organization yet, so excuse us if mistakes are made. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Don’t ever take the fun out of it. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

I
’ve been a DJ at car shows and cruises for many years. Make that decades, actually – more than I dare to count. Like any DJ, I realize that the event is all about the cars. Even still, although the music is secondary, it sure does set the mood. A DJ spins tunes ranging from doo-wop to oldies to rock and roll. Since I’m based in Jersey, I always play some “Jersey” music, and I tend to stay with ’50s and ’60s tunes. The Philly sound is a must for the car crowd in the Pennsylvania area. I enjoy playin’ tunes that I listened to back when I cruised with my ragtop flopped down, while talking with all those sweet ladies to whom I’d give a ride. We DJs are around to entertain and complement an event. I have done dance contests, “name that tune” contests, giveaways and just about anything to make the entertainment special and fun. I change my approach to the event as I read the crowd. Having the right music for the right mood and audience is important. If a DJ doesn’t have fun doing the event, then people in attendance are not going to have fun, either. You have to be one with your music and the crowd. Sometimes, I’ve had people approach me and tell me they watch what I am playing, look at their friends, and try to guess what I’ll do for giveaways. In my DJing, I do some off-the-wall things for giveaway goodies and prizes. As long as people listen and participate in the fun, I’ve passed the test of public opinion – the only one that really counts. If I have people smiling, I am happy. So at your next car event you attend, talk to the DJ. We love your feedback, good or bad. It’s the only way we improve and make the event enjoyable for you. Listen to Uncle Al’s Music Warehouse every Friday night at 11 p.m. on WVLT Cruisin’ 92.1 FM.

ot too long ago, I took a trip to the local mall to do some shopping. I parked my silver, midsized SUV in the middle of a sea of cars, and when my shopping was complete I figured I’d just mosey over to where the car was parked and head on home. I instinctively looked out at the lot and figured I’d get my bearings. That is when I made an observation. I realized cars and trucks seem to be only a hand full of colors. Silver, white and red are extremely common colors for today’s vehicles. As a matter of opinion, they all seem to look very much alike. Car designs of today have rounded fronts and rears. My SUV and many trucks have similar styling, too. Now, I ask you to go to a car cruise or show and look at the cars from a stylistic perspective. Back in the day, car manufacturers from the United States made it a point to make their cars stand out from the competition. They offered the consumer a large variety of colors and the styles were quite different from one another. A good example is a Chevelle or Fairlane of the same year of manufacture. Both are great rides that have a very different look. You could tell them apart if you were blindfolded and had to run your hands over them. Even if they were the same color, their design approach was based on individuality and not a semi-clone look. I’ve always enjoyed coming up to a car event because as I get closer to the cars, I pull up to a vast body of colors and shapes. Rides that are painted colors of their era have a real personality. They have a style that says they are not like the rest. Arguably, it seems that most cars today fall somewhat short compared to the personalities of the cars of days gone by. The next time I park my SUV at the mall, I’ll have a Rat Fink antenna topper so I can see it quicker. Department of Thanks: I want to thank the powers that be of Cruising Magazine for using my photography for the first two cover shots of this year. To this contributor, it’s a very special honor. Department of Friendship: I got to coordinate the “Cruise Down Memory Lane” in Vineland, N.J., for the second year with fellow coordinator and certifiable car guy Marv Askins. This event drew nearly 1,800 cars and 20,000 spectators. The cruise was a not just success to all but a testimony of two friends working together with their car hobby. Thanks, Marv. Department of Foreign Relations: Shout out to our friends in England, Mark Thompson and Paul Savage, who visited us here in the states at the beginning of the summer. They keep the classic car hobby in the U.K. going. Mark is also the owner of Ken’s American Diner in the U.K. Pack up your folding chair, gas up the ride, bring your Cruising Magazine to plan your next car outing and enjoy the summer car scene.

Hi Gang, The weather finally got warm, but it’s already August and I haven’t seen the beach yet. Time is flying by too fast and pretty soon we’ll be yelping about how it’s too cold out. It’s been a very hot summer so far, and I’ve seen a lot more of you with water bottles; I know with the heat, I’ve downed quite a few. Just remember to dispose of them properly, especially at a car event. Why should a host club, city or business be responsible? I was able to attend the Merchantville show this year, and I believe an earlier ending time really helped them out. Gotta give the Reah brothers, their families and all their helpers a big hand for a successful event. It takes a lot of guts to make changes in any long-running event. But I personally believe a lot of car owners were happy to be home by 8 p.m. rather than 11 p.m. As you know, we all attend events, yes, and some of us more than others. I have come to believe that a lot of it ties in with just being with friends. Let’s face it, we’re all getting older (yeah, I said that). When we were younger we may have tipped a few bottles and the local authorities would tell us to “park it,” then we’d get a ride home – that doesn’t happen anymore. We now gather at car shows, breakfasts, cruises and friends’ garages to socialize. Any place that car guys gather is fun, and sure beats doing chores. There are a lot of events for August and September, and I know, I probably have missed some. But hey gang, I’m 62, my crystal ball has gotten a little cloudy. How about some help? Send me some of those flyers you gather at shows and cruises. I want to know about them and so do all of our readers! Also, I need flyers for the Pumpkin Run to hand out. Thank you, and see ya cruisin’.
See you all at the events, and please stop and say hi,
Larry
