Car enthusiast Ainsley Doyle recently finished working on this “new old-school” 1989 Cadillac.

IS THE AUTOMOTIVE COMMUNITY

DIVERSE ENOUGH? Car guys and gals speak out By Frank Adkins bout three years ago I was standing in the shop at Strader’s Auto Upholstery near Greenwood, Del. Outside sat a late ‘60s Cadillac that had been there for several weeks. The proprietor, Jack Strader, was working on the car a little bit at a time as its owner was able to afford each step of soft trim replacement—new seat upholstery, new convertible top, and more. Strader explained that it belonged to a young black man—not the demographic of his usual clientele. Even so, the owner of the Caddy was every bit as passionate about his car as any of Strader’s customers. According to Strader, the young man had said, “You know when you go to a show and it’s always the older white guys who have the nice cars? That’s what I want!” Those words stuck with me. It was true that I didn’t know many young black men who were car fanatics. But what about other demographics? I reflected on the composition of the crowds at many of the small area shows and cruises that I attended as well as some of the larger regional shows. At last year’s All Chrysler

Nationals in Carlisle, Pa., for example, I observed more motorized scooters crawling about the show field and creeping up and down the aisles in the swap meet than in any year prior. I have attended that show every year since it began in 1990, shortly before my 25th birthday. In recent years, however, I haven’t seen many twentysomethings. Furthermore, black, Hispanic, and other non-white races comprise a scant percentage of participants. Men have always far outnumbered women, and although the number of female participants is growing, the majority of women who attend shows such as this do so with their male significant others, not on their own. Despite the unbalanced demographics present at most automotive events, it seemed to me that when we do come together, the demographic barriers fall. “Car Crazy” Barry Meguiar famously opines that it is our passion that joins us. To see if others shared that sentiment, I polled a number of friends and acquaintances in the car community. Here are some of their responses:

We can all identify with excitement when we hear a well-tuned engine checking out Doyle’s Caddy. Of course, looking across the show field, they couldn’t start up, or see a rare classic on the road. Spring Boardwalk Classic Car Show

Rockabilly Uprising and Car Show

The boardwalk of Wildwood, N.J., was the place to be for the 22nd annual Spring Boardwalk Classic Car Show. It was a very pleasant Mother’s Day weekend that included blue skies; plenty of fine rides greeted everyone who came down to the Jersey shore to stroll the boardwalk and checkout the fine rides. The event is always open to all rides that are at least 10 years old from stock to custom. What a cool way to treat mom. A stay at the shore, a walk on the famous Wildwood boardwalk and, of course, a car show….perfect together. Check out the Wildwood events for many more car, bike and truck events to enjoy this cruising season.

Rockabilly music has a way of bringing back memories of a time when life was a lot less complex. You can also understand the words and enjoy the beat. Two events wrapped up in one became the treat of the day at the town of Historic Smithville, N.J. The sounds of early rock and the presence of lovely ladies dressed in pinup attire was part one of this Sunday venue. The Rockabilly Uprising presented by Underground was a cool event of sights and sounds. But that was just a part of the day. The Blacktop Villains Car Club held their car show in conjunction with the Rockabilly Uprising festival and there was no shortage of fine rides on display.

The Race of Gentlemen For those of us who grew up in the late ‘40s (aka Boomers), life was rather simple compared to today. Television was in black and white and there were three main television channels. The idea of a computer in a car was the thought of science fiction. Photographs were mostly black and white. To go back in time to a simpler day for us car enthusiasts, one needs to attend The Race of Gentlemen. This is a gathering that brings us back to a time when hot rodding and the car hobby starting taking roots in the USA. Hundreds of rides from the golden age of racing and traditional customs converged on the beach in Wildwood, N.J., for a fun time when rules were governed by a handshake and performance was calculated by natural talent and not a computer printout. By the way, I made the photos black and white to add some nostalgia. Even today, we can have a bit of yesterday when speed and racing were done by gentlemen.

The community of Runnemede, N.J., is the place to be for a really hot car show. The local fire department recently staged a four-alarm car show for the 6th year. There were plenty of trophies and door prizes to entertain the car guys and gals, and of course, some great food prepared by the firehouse team. This isn’t just a bunch of firefighters who simply enjoy sirens and hoses. Many of these guys are car enthusiasts who have cool rides of their own. The proceeds for the day went to the firehouse.

Remembering Cliff Shield

There is something special about the great outdoors. There is the smell of the pine trees and the sights of the lovely green grass. There is also the bright colors and sounds of the American classics gathered for the fourth annual Classic Cruisers of South Jersey Car Show. Enthusiasts brought more than 100 rides out to enjoy a pleasant day of outdoor fun. The Classic Cruisers of South Jersey and the Good Sports Gun Club teamed up for a good time in the heart of Southern New Jersey.

To those cruisers who rely on the internet for show and cruise dates, there is a website, Cliff’s Calendar, that many people look to for information about area events. This online event source was started by a gentleman named Cliff Shield. Cliff was a dedicated car guy all his adult life. His passion for cars started in the early days of the hobby and continued right up to his passing. Cliff had many types of rides throughout his 83 years and he was known for his love of Corvettes in particular. His El Camino was his last signature ride and he participated at cruises whenever he was able to. His passing on June 3 left a very large gap for those of us who knew him and called him a friend. Cliff’s memory lives on in his transfer of the website to Larry “Cliff” Troth. Cliff enjoyed the hobby so much he wanted to make sure his fellow cruisers were taken care of even after his passing. Thank you, Cliff Shield. We were lucky to know you and will always appreciate your commitment to the hobby you enjoyed.

INCH FORD REARS

A Kid’s Point of View I like going to car shows and meeting families who like cars. Last year at a show, I met the Elenbark family. The mother is Jennifer and the father is Austin. They have two boys named Ryan and Mason. Ryan is 9 and Mason is 2. Ryan was 3 when he was taken to his first car show. Mason’s been going to shows since he was born. Technically, Mason’s first show was when Jennifer was three months pregnant in Ocean City, Md. Austin, the father, grew up around cars. His father Bob has been working on cars for as long as Austin could remember. His dad taught him everything he knows and is now passing it on to his kids. Bob is the kid’s pop-pop—he built the kids a stroller that is a replica of his rat rod. It is really cool and is even painted blue and orange. The kids love cars; they are curious about how they work. From the time the boys could walk and talk, they showed their love for cars. Ryan’s first word was actually “car.” Ryan likes hot rods and Mason likes motorcycles. Ryan’s dream car is an air-bagged C10. He is following in his dad’s footsteps because his dad has a 1983 air-bagged C10. When Jennifer asked her son Mason what his dream car is, he said a blue rat rod. I guess he is going to follow his pop-pop’s footsteps. Lastly, their favorite thing to do at the shows is to hang with family and help show their pop-pop’s work off. Their second favorite thing? The food vendors! — Text and photos by Aldina Burns, a student in the South Jersey area and a certifiable car gal

I start by saying rain, rain go away. By the time you read this we will be well into the summer, but this past spring (if you want to call it that) was probably the wettest on record. Many events were either rescheduled or canceled altogether. Day after day of rain and dreary weather also makes for unhappy people. We need sun and warm weather, so you better soak it up and enjoy it. I would like to send out my sympathies to the family of Cliff Shield. He passed away recently. As many of you know, Cliff started “Cliff’s Calendar” on the inter-web to help all the car guys and gals find their way to the shows and cruises that they most liked. Cliff had a passion for the car hobby and translated that into a web page that everyone turned to in the tristate area for local events. The best part of that whole deal was that Cliff did it all for free. I was proud to have known Cliff; may he rest in peace. Cliff’s Calendar lives on, thanks to Larry Troth, who stepped up and saw that this calendar was important to the car community. I’m sure Cliff was extremely proud to see Larry take over and carry on his work. The new website design is also very nice. In other news: Have you noticed what’s trending in the car world recently? There’s been a change from original cars to the restoration mods. Now, make no mistake: The serious, high-end collectors are still looking for those original numbers matching cars, which for the most part are way out of the average person’s budget. However, the normal buyers at the high end auctions, the ones that you don’t see on TV, are trending towards the more reasonable modified cars. Right now, I hear early station wagons are also a hot ticket. Who would have thought that would be the hot ticket item? As a matter of fact, I am seeing more and more of them show up at different events. I suppose four doors will be hot very soon as well. Another thing to think about: building vs. buying. What is your take on the subject? I have seen many cars cross the auction block nationally and locally, selling for a lot less than they cost to build. There are many builders out there that assemble because of the thrill, the challenge, the accomplishment and the joy of doing it. If the build is for yourself, then your reward is a sweet ride. If you’re thinking of a build to flip for profit, then you better hope that you are building a very desirable car. Chances are you may get your costs back, but usually you never get your hours of hard work back. It’s a touchy subject, one that should only be left to the high-end TV builders and not the average backyard builders. You know what else is hot right now? Rat rods and cars with original patina. Once again, unless you have a TV show on velocity, where you see high-end rat rods and such, local rat rods and original patina cars are showing up more and more. These cars are probably the most affordable way to get out and enjoy the car scene. Anything goes with these vehicles – mix-match body and chassis, motors, transmissions, interiors and so on. Buy, build or create – your choice! Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about having fun. Keep On Cruisin’ Baby…Bill Nese

Pin-up Point Of View

Hi gals and guys, I can finally say I have attended my first indoor car show! And what a car show it was. It started on Friday, May 4, and ran until Sunday, May 6. It was the Motor Social at The Show Boat in Atlantic City. You could park your car inside for the whole weekend—and park right on the casino floor. It was open to all makes and models. Inside, there were plenty of vendors. You could also have your picture taken with the DeLorean car, Batman car and the Flintstone car. In the evening, you could go watch some entertainment in The Bourbon Room. Great bands like Little Leslie and The Bloodshots, The SilverHounds and The Tremors played. And we can’t forget the beautiful gals of burlesque Calamity Change, Puss N Boots, and Black Hole Burlesque. The hostess for the night was Judi Justice who is the president of The PA Liberty Belles Pin Up Club. They are a group of gals of all ages and backgrounds. They all have the same goal and that is helping the community. The Belles advocate and collect donations for various charities. Their current charity is Distributing Dignity. It’s a nonprofit group that provides new, clean undergarment and feminine hygiene products to women in need. To get more information, go to PA Liberty Belles-Pinup Club on Facebook or palibertybelles.com. If you missed this show, no worries. The next show will be October 26-28 at the same location. It will be a Halloween-themed weekend. Yours truly will be there. You can get a signed and numbered Trixie Cherrybomb Leggs poster. Any money I make will go towards The Veterans Home. Hope to see you there! For more information contact motorsocialAC@com, motorsocialAC@gmail.com, (347)528-5372 or (609) 857-1213.

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

I’m back. I was in the ICU at a local hospital for three weeks…then three more weeks. Followed by that came rehab, then a couple operations. But now, with a good woman watching my back, I will be showing up at some of the shows. It’s good to be out again! But I’m definitely watching the temps. Luckily for me, with seven-plus weekends of rain-outs and 90 degree days, I haven’t missed too much. I am, however, sorry to have missed the Inter-Club Meeting and Cowtown swap meet, and many other outings. Basically, getting older stinks. They call these the “Golden Years” but what a joke, right? August is here all too soon, and even hotter weather is to be expected. As we age, we can’t take the heat or we get sunburn, aka end up looking like lobsters. During shows, make sure cold water is available. To a point, those in charge of putting on the events are responsible for those at the events. Whether it’s traffic control or parking, it also pays to have some common sense when running an event. We have all been to shows that we slightly criticized, so when running an event, just think about why you disliked them and try not to have people think of your event in the same way. An easy way is to welcome each participant as they enter your event and to thank them for coming at the end. Also, at an event being held outside a restaurant, please make sure restaurant managers recruit extra help for the day because waiting for service or for food on a hot day will definitely bring out the bad tempers. There are a lot of new events this year, plus a few returning events, something not seen too often. It’s a good thing when people can get together in this hobby to bring back an event, because usually when a show ends, a club simply splits up or friends stop talking—both results are not good since life’s short, after all. In the interest of cars, I haven’t seen my Caddy since November. But it will be out again sometime soon I hope. Looking at the calendar, there are many interesting events going on. Something to keep in mind: At cruises, people can come and go as they please. But at shows, one should stay the entire time. It has to do with respect—after all, most of us know the poor people trying to manage the events and on any other day, they would be friends. So anyhow, I will be looking forward to being at a few events, depending on how I feel. The Caddy may even show up, who knows. I miss the car people and I’m looking forward to being out with you all again.

SHIFTINGGEARS By Ben Notaro • red63vetnj@comcast.net For those of you who may not be too familiar with the old car hobby, there are times when we car owners need to do some work in or on our cherished classics. An example is my 1963 Corvette. For the record, I purchased this ride over 40 years ago. In the 40-some years of ownership I eventually had the car repainted and I did considerable work in the installation of the interior. As time and fate decrees, there are things that need to be repaired, replaced or tightened. It just so happens that my driver’s side kickpanel screws became loose. No big deal, you say, just tighten them. The body is fiberglass and the glass that the screws were secured into…well…weakened from age. Now I had the fun of figuring out how to reinstall my kickpanel. Well, in this miracle age of adhesives for everything, I mixed a batch of epoxy and used it to fill the weakened hole. I let it dry, re-drilled the hole and reinstalled the panel. It’s kind of easy to work on the oldies. They were metal-bodied rides (or in my case fiberglass) and the repairs did not require a degree in plastics and chemistry. Now let me segue into the topic of my SUV that I purchased in 2005. My new problem is the headliner material falling off of the foam-like backing. First, the material is so thin that it’s like tissue paper. Next, the backing has a foam-like texture and if you rub or touch it you create a small snowstorm inside your car. I have a problem that you usually do not find on an old car vinyl headliner. How do I glue these two components together without making a mess? Oh, did I say spray adhesive seeps right through the material like a tissue in a bucket of water? I looked on YouTube and Google and called upholstery shops and the fix was not easy. Many times I was told to pull the old headliner, backing, disconnect anything on the car’s ceiling and if necessary remove any interior trim….which is usually glued. Not simple. My point is this: Working on old cars is, or seems to be, a great deal easier than working on a newer car. The simple repair becomes complex. The good old days of working in the driveway or garage are now the days of waiting in the dealer customer service lounge watching a big screen TV. At least the coffee and cookies are free. It makes one appreciate the good old days even more. Did I ever tell you about my SUV’s taillight bulb? Well, that’s another story. Department of the Interior: Why are factory floor mats so expensive? Department of Aging: Bring a kid to a car show. We Boomers are getting older. Department of Land Management: At over $100 an hour, any wonder why car guys like to avoid car dealers?
