A VISIT TO THE LAST CHANCE GARAGE Preservation is the theme at Lou Mandich’s barn turned auto shop After 32 years of teaching, Lou Mandich turned his passion for automobiles into a small business that specializes in cars built before 1970.

I
f I hadn’t been looking over the hood of my Dodge Dakota, I would have thought I had passed through a wrinkle in time as I crept down the long driveway toward Last Chance Garage in Unionville, Pa. A ’69 Chrysler Newport convertible sat outside the first of two rustic red-painted wooden buildings. A black LaSalle sat idling in front of the main building. Its owner was conversing with a man who wore round, wire-framed spectacles and a work uniform with suspenders. That man was Lou Mandich, the garage’s founder and proprietor. Inside the main shop, ancient shop manuals rested on over-stressed shelves, storage bins full of various automotive doo-dads and fasteners lined the walls, and a rack of glass jars sat beneath a heavy workbench with an arbor press from a bygone

era bolted to its top. V-belts dangled from nails pounded long ago into the secondstory floor joists. On one side of the front shop, an antique Ford rested on jack stands while work was being performed on it. On the other side of the shop sat Mandich’s own Buick, a 1918 E45 Touring Car, which he was preparing for a road jaunt that was scheduled for the upcoming weekend. The area ahead of the Buick was occupied in part by a cast iron coal-burning stove. In short order, the LaSalle was driven into the open bay between the Ford and the Buick. The fronts of three other cars, including Mandich’s 1924 Willys Knight, were visible through the doorway to the back shop. In the adjacent building, four other vehicles were being repaired. In all, there are nine service bays. Including Mandich, the garage employs a staff of four.
Last Chance Garage’s advertisement is via word of mouth by the shop’s many satisfied customers. Mandich is grateful for the folks who comprise his large customer base. He is quick to give credit to his three employees: Fred Shufflebarger, Jim Groome, and John Beard, all of whom are certified technicians. “I’m not a certified mechanic,’ said Mandich. “I’m more of a tinkerer. I answer the phone and talk with customers. These guys are all trained, and they really know what they are doing. I couldn’t do this without them.” Mandich has served on the Hagley Car Show planning committee for the past decade. Although he operates a successful business, it is evident that his love of the cars is what motivates him. “I like to drive these cars. That’s where the fun is. A RIDGELY CLASSIC Brenda Walls has turned this small town into the classic car capital of Maryland By Lou Sitaras

s I wiped away the sleep from my eyes at 4 a.m., I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement. Once a year, a sleepy southern town with all the charm of Mayberry turns into a premier automotive destination that thousands of enthusiasts flock to. All over Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and points north and south, garage doors opened and classic cars that rarely see the light of day suddenly rumbled to life. It’s a day that was anticipated all year long. The name of the town is Ridgely and recently I had the opportunity to talk with Brenda Walls, creator of the Ridgely Car Show. Walls is an extremely busy woman and truth be told, I wasn’t looking forward to this interview. I pictured myself following her around as she stocked shelves or took inventory at the business she owns, Ridgely Pharmacy. What I found instead was a charming, relaxed woman who spent over an hour with me chatting about cars, car shows, and everything related. It was a conversation I thoroughly enjoyed. This sharp-dressed woman is a smart businessperson, but also a die-hard car gal who appreciates a V-8 rumble along with the best of them. Last year, I was invited to a little get together the night before the show, a small Meet, Greet & Grab A Bite To Eat. It was a long trek a day before the show, but life is short and sometimes you just have to force yourself to get out and go. The faces here were familiar as I ran into a few friends I knew as well as a few faces from TV shows and movies. Boss Hogg & Sheriff Roscoe from the Dukes Of Hazzard movie, David Rea, formerly of Graveyard Carz, and one face I had seen many, many times in magazines, news clips, and photos...Miss Hurst Shifter, Linda Vaughn. She was stunning, decked out in shimmery black and gold with a personality that rivaled that of Dolly Parton. I tried to keep my composure as the opportunity presented itself to say hello. She was gracious, charming, and spent 15 minutes hanging out with me and chatting. I smiled the entire drive home. After getting two hours of sleep, I arrived in Ridgely Sunday morning with my friends Alan Pedersen, Carl Witt, and Gordon Kozicki. Kenneth Misal, event co-host, made sure we were parked together in the best available spot, and off we went to check out the show. I couldn’t help but notice the awards table with a huge array of crystal awards perfectly aligned over a blue satin tablecloth. As I’ve aged gracefully, I really don’t care about awards anymore. I go to a car show because I enjoy the camaraderie of friends and usually leave well before the awards presentation. But these awards…Wow! It would be like winning an Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony.
8 AND 9
INCH FORD REARS The General Lee and Sheriff Roscoe’s patrol car parked in front of the Ridgely train station.
I did spot Linda Vaughn, Miss Hurst, and once again, she didn’t disappoint, all decked out in gold with black trim and gold knee high go-go boots. She remembered me from the night before and gave me a big Linda hug. Later in the day she graciously signed a large photo of my car with the words “Lou, You Shift Me”. LOL! I died, went to heaven, and came back down again. The star of this show is none other than the King himself, Richard Petty. He arrived in a motorcade of vintage Plymouth Superbirds escorted on each end by police motorcycles and police cars with lights and sirens blaring. It was an entrance that only the King of NASCAR could make and he did it in Petty style. This man is 82 years old and hasn’t raced in almost 30 years, yet people were lining up at 4 a.m. for the opportunity to get his autograph. Stars today could learn a lot from Mr. Petty and his devotion to the sport and especially the fans. He is and always will be “The King.” There was so much happening, including autograph sessions and a charity auction, that the awards presentation wasn’t until well after 4 p.m. but no worries...everyone stayed and showed their support. Walls announced the winners with Linda Vaughn seated quietly behind her watching, and probably tired after the long day. When my name was announced as a winner though, she perked right up, gave me a smile, and said “Lou”! What a sweetheart she was. Her tenure as a motorsports ambassador has been a magnificent one, as has Richard Petty’s. These two are legends that have left their indelible mark in automotive history and it was my honor to have spent time with them. All good things...you know the rest. Nothing lasts forever. That includes the Ridgely Car Show. This year’s show is Sunday, September 22, and it’s the final one. And, in grand finale style, this show promises to be over the top. Richard Petty, Linda Hurst, Dennis Gage, David Rea, Rachael De Barros, and many more celebrities will be there to send this show off in grand style. Just like our favorite TV shows, everything comes to an end and so will the Ridgely Car Show. I can’t imagine the logistics of hosting a show like this. The volunteers, schedules, plane rides, police support, meals, vendors, parking, on and on and on. After having the pleasure of spending time with Brenda Walls, I have to say I’m envious of her organizational skills. This woman knows what it takes to host a successful event and she’s damn good at what she does—to the tune of $350,000 raised for those less fortunate than us. If you’ve ever dreamed of attending the Ridgely show, I’d strongly suggest you make it a point to be here on September 22. Yes, just like me, you may have to wipe away the sleep at 4 a.m., but I promise you, it’ll be a memory that stays with you for the rest of your life. And after all, isn’t making memories what life is all about?

Kudos goes out to the team of the Wildwood Motor Events group on a well-organized event. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Cruising ‘Main Street’ Hammonton Hammonton is a quintessential, modest-sized community nestled in the southern part of New Jersey. It is a warm community that has a really nice downtown area (Main Street) with many small specialty shops and eateries. Hammonton also has a main street that gets to share some cool car action with a large cruise that is put on by its hometown car club, Cruising Classics. This event is also celebrating its 26th year of car activity. The cruise took place on a beautiful spring evening and there was no shortage of cars and people who came out to enjoy a relaxing time. There were rides parked on the main street and surrounding streets so every stroll around the block held cool rides to see. The beauty of Cruising Main Street is the warmth of the community and the memories brought back to days gone by with the hundreds of nostalgic rides that lined the streets. All of these fun times in the car hobby make for a memorable time in the endless Cruising Summer of 2019. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

IHOP Gathering at the Ramada Inn When a group of guys and gals that are dedicated to racing get together, one can bet that word of their impromptu cruise spreads quickly. So it did when a young dirt track racer, Neil Williams, got some track cars to come out to the local IHOP in Vineland, New Jersey, on a picture perfect Thursday evening. Well, like all good car events, word spread quickly and a group of cruisers heard the word and they joined the fun. The cruise had plenty of race and unique ride flavor as well as entertainment provided by a talented gentleman playing his guitar and singing. Neil has several more cruises planned for the season and it’s a sure bet that they will get even more cruisers and racers to join in on the fun. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
South Jersey Noise-Makers Car Show First-time car shows are a daunting task. There are many things to take into consideration. Having an organized show with every member doing what they are supposed to do is very important. The South Jersey Noise-Makers Car Club did their homework well. This first-time show had a great turnout of cars and fantastic cooperation from Mother Nature. There were activities for the youngsters and plenty of food for all to enjoy. The show had a vending area that also featured some onelung steam machines on display and there was also a Chinese auction with many fine items to bid on. A well-organized inaugural event with everything in place is the way to go. Planning it correctly and implementing it with a good team gets the job done. The show was held at the All The Nations church grounds in Rosenhayne, New Jersey. The South Jersey Noise-Makers did their homework and get an A+ for an event well done. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki

Nanticoke Car Show The ancestral homeland of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape is located in Southern New Jersey and the Delmarva Peninsula. Long before the European settlers came, these Native Americans settled peacefully in the region. For the past forty years they have held a Pow Wow to share and preserve their customs. Their recent Pow Wow was held at the Salem County Fairgrounds in Pilesgrove Township, New Jersey. This event featured a car show that saw a great turnout for a day of learning about local Native American culture and entertainment that ranged from cultural drummers to flute players. A very nice day with a combination of history and cruising fun. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki

ALL ASPECTS OF VEHICLE MAINTENANCE • FROM OIL CHANGES TO OVERHAULS! Hello, my loves! I would like to introduce you to my gal Alyssa. I am sure most of you have seen her with me at the Veterans’ Home and other car events. She is one amazing lady. I met Alyssa a few years ago. She loves music and can sing. She told me her introduction to music was listening to 45’s of Leslie Gore on her father’s jukebox. At that time, she was around six or seven years old. Her father was an avid antique dealer at the time and Alyssa would go with him to antique shows. Her mother would always have country music playing in the car and Alyssa would sing along. This started her singing with a couple of friends in a band at age 16. Flash forward to her early twenties and she’s singing karaoke in bars about twice a week. Shortly after, she fell in love and got married to her husband Jim. He is one cool guy. He definitely has a love of cars –- 49 to be exact! Jim has had a total of 327 cars in his lifetime. He’s a true car guy. Alyssa and Jim went to go see their friend Keith play bass with his band Lower Bank Customs. They are a three-piece band and they play rockabilly, country swing, and surf. Jim and Keith really bonded while restoring Keith’s 1958 Plymouth “Orange peel” –- unbelievably in just six months. She told the guys in the band that she could sing country. She soon started joining them for songs like Tammy Wynette’s Good Girls Gonna Go Bad and Lynn Anderson’s I Never Promised You A Rose Garden. Songs she used to listen to that in the car with her mom as a kid. Alyssa tells me she has a passion and creativity to provide entertainment to people who appreciate that style of music and cars by singing and dressing up as a classic pin up. Alyssa has a nice collection of real vintage clothes and is also making her dresses with her mom. She and Jim have two adorable children, six-year-old Jimmy and three-year-old Davilee. They also enjoy watching their mom sing and their dad work on his cool cars. Alyssa said Jim, a collector all his life, is the person who gives her most of her knowledge and appreciation of the fifties. He restores cars and electronics. I was lucky enough to be welcomed into their home, which, when you walk in, is like stepping back into the fifties. It’s cool to see the kids standing in the living room listen to the big jukebox. They really live the lifestyle. I’m glad I met them and have become good friends. Don’t forget to check out their band Lower Bank Customs.

Hey Gang, Can you believe over half the cruising season is gone? So, don’t waste any time and get out and enjoy all the great shows and cruises that are still going on. Many of you know that my car club (Nostalgia Knights) along with many other clubs are huge supporters of our veterans and, obviously, our current military men and woman who protect us every day. Quite simply, it does bother me when I drive down the road on Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July and I don’t see many American flags flying in front of homes. I know we all have rights, but it still bothers me. Enough said… Rain, that word has made many car organizers scramble the last couple of years. Weather forecasts really have become much more accurate over the last several years -- or have they? In some cases they let you know down to the minute when it’s going to start raining. However, for all the people who are trying to organize a car show, it’s a nightmare. Take for example your show is Sunday and you are watching the news on Tuesday and the weatherman (or woman) says you can expect a beautiful weekend with temps in the mid 70’s and bright sunshine. Perfect, just what the doctor ordered. Friday comes and now that bright sunshine and 70-degree weather has turned into a chance of a mini hurricane with temps in the 50s. Now, what’s a chance, do we cancel the show, do we try to get it in, what time will the rain start? I hate the word chance, either it’s 100% or it’s nothing, but don’t leave us in the chance world. Some events have the option of rain dates however, others don’t and that will be a complete loss. Even rain dates sometimes lose due to other commitments. Now we all know that even a threat of nasty weather will keep many garage doors closed. So, if you think it’s easy to make these decisions, it’s not. If you cancel the event the sun will come out, if you try to get the show in it will rain like, well you know. Frankly, when you really stop and think about it, stressing over this is not worth it. There are shows and cruises every day and there will be another one, maybe just not yours. All car show organizers have had to deal with this many times over and for as long as we do this, it will most certainly happen again. When in doubt about a pending show due to inclement weather, check websites, use day-of-show phone numbers, check your emails and even your spam mail as well. Many clubs will blast out emails to let you know what’s going on. Or you could just simply look up in the sky and make your own decision. Many events advertise rain or shine. Well, that means one thing and one thing only, it’s their only shot at hosting that event on that day. Local shows usually don’t make out well while hosting during a rainstorm. However, if you are attending a long-distance event such as Carlisle, Syracuse, the Power Tour, or any event of that nature, then you know that rain is a definite possibility and you have no escape. In these cases, rain doesn’t hold many cars back because it’s a one-shot deal that you’ve planned for a year in advance. It’s crazy to have weather make our choices, but like it or not, we do it every day. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about having “FUN” “FUN” “FUN.” Remember that! Keep On Cruisin’ Baby…Bill Nese

CRUISING 101
Hi Gang,
It’s Sum…Sum…Summer Time! The heat is on. So, hope you can find some shade and even a breeze. Oh, by the way, avoid paved parking lots! Some great shows, in my opinion, are coming up:
Chicken Run: 8/11 Fort Mott: 8/17 Salute Our Veterans: 8/25 Funtastic Rod Run: 9/1 Boeing Car Show: 9/14 Memories in the Grove: 9/22 Downtown Millville: 9/28
Picking up a point from the last issue, I can accept $15-$20 to enter an event, but I think for that money it should be a special venue. Any more than that is just crazy. By the time you gas the vehicle, meet with the guys for breakfast, get to the event, buy 50/50 tickets, enter the Chinese auction, have lunch, go home, stop for dinner along the way, this day has cost more than $100. To do that two or three times a weekend, not to mention the tent and chairs, well, I sure hope you have a good job. I agree with the thought that gee whiz, I own the car, so why do I have to pay to show it off? It’s a question for the ages. The events seem to be changing a bit this year, though. More spectators seem to know what they are looking at. And the questions they ask are logical. It’s a new world, different for sure. Also, gang, be sure to check out “www.cruisingmagazine.net” for all of the latest rain dates as well as changes to area events and the form to enter new events. It’s very easy, give it a look. On a personal note, I’ve been feeling better, although heat does bother me. I’m trying to get out more and get more exercise. Plus, the Caddy is back on the road again.
See you all cruising!
By Ben Notaro • red63vetnj@comcast.net
One day while cruising on a social media website (can I say, Facebook?) an interesting question was proposed by one of the site participants: “How long of a day should a car show be?” The varied responses and logic behind these thoughts were most impressive and genuinely thought provoking. Let me start with my “I remember when” comment first. I guess I can say it was back in 1973 when I started to attend car shows. There were not many events way back then, so missing one likely meant a bit of time elapsed before you were able to attend the next show. Therefore, the time duration of the show was pretty much accepted by event participants. When I got involved with a car club, I do recall our first few car shows were held at a recreated turn of the century village and lasted from nearly 9:00 a.m. until almost 5 p.m. This was a heck of a long day and, again, it was somewhat of the norm if a person wanted to stay to see if they earned the coveted class trophy. One factor I reflect upon is what the age of the participants was back then. For the record, I and many of my constituents were in our 30s and 40s. No big deal then. Today, as one does the math, we are 30 to 40 years older. The long days of yore are not necessarily in line with our stamina, so seven hours or so at a car show can be a bit long. Well, to continue with the Facebook conversation, many people weighed in with suggested time ranges—from four hours to nearly a full day. There is no range of time that can be considered perfect. My thoughts are to evaluate where the event is, factor in the time of year and how hot/warm it usually is during that time of year, and determine what the show’s agenda is. If there a series of scheduled activities, then an extended day is most likely in order. If it’s simply a trophied show, then a shorter day would seem more logical. Like any good event, it’s wise to evaluate the length of the show with a good team while also analyzing how much time is needed for everything to work well.
