THE WOMEN OF MOPAR Stories of unique individuals who have made our hobby better (Part Three: Women of the Rapid Transit Tour)

By Lou Sitaras

I

t was 2017 when I participated in my very first Rapid Transit Tour (RTT). Sponsored by Mopar Collectors Guide and Totally Auto Mopar Restorations, this tour gives the means for car builders to not only see how their cars are perceived at a show, but how they handle a one week road trip throughout the country. I came away from that first RTT amazed at the fantastic people and especially impressed that so many women participated in it. These women were knowledgeable, passionate, and many drove their own cars and even repaired them when the need arose. It gave me a newfound respect for the women in our hobby and it was the beginning of a transformation for me as I learned just how enthusiastic they are. This year, Cruising Magazine has been proud to acknowledge these women and their many contributions to the classic car hobby we all love. The words aren’t mine but their very own...their own stories of what brought them to appreciate the hobby, the cars, and, especially, the people. Following is part three of our four-part series. This installment: Women of The Rapid Transit Tour.

AMY BERRY BRAGG

I met Amy back in 2017 when she planned to participate on the Rapid Transit Tour, but her son Noah was scheduled to come home for a visit from overseas Air Force duty and, naturally, Amy wanted to see him. When it comes to classic cars, Amy can hold her own with any man. She’s smart, passionate, and creative. As an administrator for the Mopar Maniacs Car Club, she helps others to feel the exhilaration of the classic car hobby she’s so passionate about.

6

BERRY BRAGG: I was born in 1974 to a man who had only owned Mopars—not counting mom’s family station wagon. I’ve never been a fru-fru girly person, I could care less about painted nails and fancy clothes. In fact, I’m wearing camo as I type this. I only had one female neighbor and grew up always hanging out with the boys. I learned to drive on my dad’s lap behind the wheel of an old Jeep CJ, In school, I ended up in auto body shop class. During my senior year, I repaired a 1950 Chrysler New Yorker that was damaged when a tree fell on It in a local barn. It was trailered to my trade school shop class and it was the last project I painted. In 1969, Dad bought his burnt orange Road Runner. Sadly, he was laid off from work and had to decide between keeping his treasured Road Runner or the house and so the Road Runner found a new home and, in fact, dad still lives in the same house today. He swore by the time he turned 50 years old (Oct. 1996) he’d own another Road Runner. In August of 1996 we found that car not 20 minutes from home. The owner said it wouldn’t start, so for $2,000 we dragged it home, dumped a bit of gas in the tank (gauge said quarter tank) and in the carb’, turned the key and this 1968 Road Runner fired right up. As it turned out, there was a pin hole in the tank and the gas gauge needed to be replaced. Yup, SHE WAS ONLY OUT OF GAS! Fast forward to 2011... I was divorced and the Road Runner came out of storage and moved in with me. Nine years later and about 20,000 miles of smiles, here we are. We have three Carlisle Chrysler Nationals under our belt with 2018 being my favorite year. Our Road Runner, named Fine Lee, earned a celebrity choice award and was displayed in front of the Mopar Hall Of Fame.

CAROLYN DUHAIME

After spending 30 years as a bartender, I’ve learned to quickly assess just about any person I meet but nobody could prepare me for life with Carolyn. She’s funny, smart, quirky, knows everything about cars, and she travels the roadways with a giant stuffed Road Runner she affectionately calls “her large plush poultry.” At the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals in 2018, she dressed up in a complete Road Runner outfit and took center stage to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Plymouth Road Runner. There is no greater ambassador to the classic car hobby than Carolyn and no greater inspiration for the classic car woman.

DUHAIME: My Mopar love goes back to 1968. My Dad was a mechanical engineer and our family car was always a Mopar. My memory only goes back to our DeSoto station wagon. My love of mid-sized Mopars happened when I was going home from the dealership in the backseat of my parents new 1968 Dodge Coronet 500. Ironically, dad wanted to get a 1968 Charger as the family car, but mom didn’t like the gas cap [being located] high up on top of the rear quarter panel. Dad wisely decided to compromise with the Coronet 500. Being the only girl in the neighborhood, and a daughter who enjoyed spending time with my dad, working with him on that Coronet was great! Dad and I even had flames coming out of the carburetor on occasion although Mom wasn’t too thrilled when she saw that. I guess those ballet lessons didn’t pay off…LOL! There is a saying that you never forget your first love, and I will never forget that 1968 Dodge Coronet 500. I was fortunate enough to recently purchase a brand new 2019 Dodge Challenger. It was a final gift from my dad upon his passing. You see, my inheritance was $250 less than the actual purchase price of the Challenger. The indefinable quality of my dad will always be in a Mopar!

Amy Berry Bragg enjoying a sunny day at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals standing with two different Road Runners—her 1968 car and her friend Carolyn’s stuffed “large plush poultry.”

Pat Murphy Tucker enjoying a beautiful day at a local car show with her 340 powered 1971 Barracuda convertible.

PAT MURPHY TUCKER

Pat chooses to live her life her own way and you can either buckle up and hang on or take a Prius home. She is the female version of Steve McQueen...cool, confident, fast, and doesn’t take garbage from anyone. From our very first meeting, I knew this was a woman I wanted to get to know better and today, I consider her to be one of my closest friends.

MURPHY TUCKER: I love fast cars. I always have and I have a passion for drag racing. If life didn’t get in the way, I would be at the track everyday...my happy place for sure. I grew up at the racetrack every weekend, watching my dad and uncle race. My dad wanted a boy, but he got me instead, so he decided he would teach me everything he knew about the hobby he loved. I, in turn, fell in love with cars and racing. Mopars came later, as I will never forget seeing a beautiful 1971 ‘Cuda in the school parking lot that belonged to the coolest teacher in the school. I fell in love with that car and vowed to own one [some] day. Luckily, dreams do come true!

Chances are if you pull up next to me at a traffic light & rev your engine...well...we’re goin’ for a ride! There aren’t many women at the track on race nights so most of the time my opponents are very surprised when the helmet comes off and the long blonde hair is revealed. They realize that they just lost to a chick. Some have even taken their toys home and refused to play. Love it! The people I’ve met in this hobby are incredible, and are among my very best friends. Many of them I never would have crossed paths with, had it not been for our love of Mopars and for that, I am extremely grateful. The final installment of this series will appear in Cruising Magazine’s Fall/Winter edition due out Sept. 21.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Christiana Care Support Cruise The inaugural ChristianaCare COVID-19 Caregiver Support Cruise was a hit. A total of 122 cars participated in the May 30 cruise organized by well-known local promoter LaBarre Everette, traveling from Delaware Park (Wilm., Del.) to ChristianaCare Newark, then proceeding on to Glasgow Medical Center and Middletown ChristianaCare ER. The 24-mile trip was escorted by New Castle County Police, Delaware State Police, Newark Police Department and the Delaware Bay and River Authority. The ChristianaCare COVID-19 Caregiver Support Program helps caregivers meet unexpected hardships, such as school and daycare closures, job changes for spouses/partners, and caring for family members. The cruise raised $2,020, which will be doubled by Dan and Susan Katzin, who are matching all donations up to $100,000. For more visit https:// christianacare.org/donors/covid/

Special Graduation Present Graduation ceremonies in New Jersey were cancelled as a result of the coronavirus. But a car enthusiast and certifiable Mopar father will not let his son go without a car guy’s graduation tribute. Marven Chin wanted to make sure his son Tyler knew that the unique closure to his high school years would not pass without a cruiser send-off. Chin contacted about 100 car buddies who responded by participating in a drive-by to congratulate Tyler and offer best wishes on his upcoming college years. Now, that’s a special Dad paying special tribute to a special son.

The One That Got Away Regrets and second chances in a classic car romance By Frank Adkins he Saint Pauli Girl commercials claimed, “You never forget your first girl.” But just as you remember your first love, you also remember the one that got away. She was the one who stole your heart and left an insatiable void. Others might come and go, but none can take her place. And so it is with cars. Most of us regret selling certain ones, but nearly every car nut has that one special vehicle that he or she yearns to get back. Too often, we chase ads and word-of- mouth leads, only to be disappointed. And just like that girl who slipped away so long ago, our most cherished rides seem lost to the wind. Two years ago, I received a message through Facebook from a gentleman named Scott Smith, who lives in Ohio. He had seen a photo of our white 1968 Plymouth Road Runner that I had posted in one of the groups that I belong to, and he said, “I think you might have my old car.” He provided the VIN of the car he used to own, and sure enough, he was right.

The Road Runner had first appeared at Daisey’s Used Cars, a classic car dealership in Georgetown, Del. in 2007. My wife, Kristan, had fallen in love with it, but we were not able to buy it at that time. When it sold, it vanished from the area. Four years later, it reappeared on Mr. Daisey’s lot. This time I bought it, and I surprised her with it. We learned that it had spent the intermediate years in Virginia, but aside from that, we knew nothing of the Road Runner’s past. There were some things about the car that had struck me as odd, such as a slightly mis-matched piece of vinyl in the rear seat and some undersized wiring that had been strung haphazardly under the car, and appeared to have fed a long-inoperative auxiliary electric fuel pump. There had once been traction bars, but only the U-bolt plates remained. Scott filled in the history of the car dating all the way back to 1975. Afterward, many of its peculiarities made sense. According to the paperwork he’d found in the glovebox when he had owned it, the Road Runner

had been sold new at a dealership near his hometown. In 1975, it had been involved in an accident, and it was subsequently junked. The elderly salvage yard proprietor had set it aside and covered it with a tarp, for he had intended to repair it. On a Saturday morning in 1981, 14-year-old Scott accompanied his father to the junkyard to obtain some parts for the car he was working on. While his Dad talked with the owner, Scott meandered about the yard. Eventually, he lifted the tarp to see what car it concealed, and he was greeted by the Road Runner emblem on the door. He called to his father, and in short order his dad worked a deal with the junkyard owner to paint a Pinto station wagon in exchange for the wrecked Road Runner. Together, Scott and his father replaced the damaged fender and bumper, and they made the car road worthy. Scott drove it while in high school, and he engaged in the typical teenage mischief. “I worked an entire summer to earn enough money to buy the new old stock material to fix the front seat, but I didn’t have enough money for the material to fix the rear seat,” Scott recalled. A family friend stitched the new material into the front seat, and she used vinyl that was a close match to replace the sun-baked top portion of the rear seat. And as it turned out, the aforementioned fuel pump had been wired by a high school kid. As the years passed, Scott and his dad replaced the patched-up quarter panels and addressed the other body issues. Eventually, a stout 440 replaced the aging 383. Having been retired from daily use, the Road Runner now saw weekend street cruising, car shows, and occasional 12-second runs down the quarter-mile at National Trail Raceway near Columbus. In time Scott married, and soon he had two sons. They shared their father and grandfather’s enthusiasm for cars, and they both have vivid memories of their dad’s white Road Runner. But in 2007, Scott and his wife divorced, and he was forced

Scott Smith with his show-ready Road Runner in 1991.

to sell his prized car. The acquaintance who purchased it flipped it, and via the auto auction in Harrisburg, Pa. it came to Daisey’s, where Kristan and I had first spotted it. After hearing his story, I could empathize with Scott. Prior to my own divorce in 1995, I sold my ’68 Dart GTS convertible. I lost track of it 15 years ago, but even now I miss it. At that time, my ’68 Dart GT was also on the chopping block; fortunately, it didn’t sell. It was a junk car when I acquired it while in high school, and my history with it is very similar to Scott’s history with the Road Runner. My Dart transported me through my early adult years, and I have had countless experiences with it. Even now, when I slip behind the wheel, it whisks me back to my younger years. My connection with it cannot be quantified in mere dollars. The Road Runner was to Scott what my Dart GT is to me. Although we had no plans to ever part with the Road Runner (which Kristan had nicknamed Moose), Scott made it clear that if we ever decided to sell, he would welcome the opportunity to own his former car again. We stayed in contact, and some months later he acquired a nice bright red ’73 Road Runner. Kristan has long been fond of the “Daisy Duke” style Road Runners. Beyond her long legs and short shorts, Daisy Duke seldom gets the credit she deserves for inspiring young women. In a time when females were making inroads in motorsports, Catherine Bach’s character made it OK for young ladies to be car fanatics and to drive just as hard as any guy. A year ago, we met with Scott and his new wife Felicia, and we looked at their ’73 Road Runner. After a short test drive, Kristan agreed to trade Moose for the ’73, which she nicknamed Scarlet. Scott and I discussed some body issues that needed to be corrected. He made those repairs, and he went even further by addressing some interior deficiencies that I had planned to tackle. Over and over he said, “I just want you guys to be happy.”

It would be foolish not to consider the market values of the two cars. A few concerned friends pointed out that a ’68 Road Runner is worth more than a ’73, and even Scott mentioned this. That may be true in an apples-to-apples comparison, but the two cars aren’t directly comparable. The ’73 has more options, and it still has its original drivetrain, while the ’68 does not. Furthermore, the bucket seats in the ’73 are more comfortable than the bench seat in the ’68, and its road manners are more refined. I believe Kristan will enjoy driving Scarlet more than she did Moose. But there is much more to consider. What no price guide can evaluate is the happiness that our cars provide or the bonds that we form with them. Emotion drives our passion, and that is what fuels the old car hobby. Furthermore, humans are social creatures, and we seek connections with like-minded folks. Our cars provide the impetus through which these connections with fellow car owners occur. They also spur our memories, prompting us to share and relive slices of our lives—personal stories of circumstances and happenings that might otherwise be forgotten. Our cars’ abilities to provide enjoyment while fulfilling our human needs are where their true values lie. Their monetary values are far less significant. On Friday, May 15, Scott and Felicia met Kristan and me in Cumberland, Md. to exchange cars. Scott had not seen his former car in 13 years, but immediately he was awash with memories. Keys changed hands, a few tears were shed, and hugs were shared. After we loaded the cars onto our trailers, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a nearby outdoor café. Scott and Felicia are rolling up fun miles with Moose, and Scott looks forward to making more Road Runner memories with his father and his sons. Kristan and I came away not only with a car that we will enjoy for many years to come, but also with new friends whom we plan to visit in the coming months. No collector car price guide can put a value on that. 11

Batsto Drive-by Car guys and gals always enjoy their rides. It’s in their genes. Even though there are some restrictions that temporarily halt large events such as shows and cruises, there is a new wave of car fun called the “drive-by.” A group of enthusiasts from the Hammonton/South Jersey area got together and made a beautiful day more enjoyable by caravanning to Batsto State Park. Cruising the back roads of South Jersey and stopping to enjoy the local sites and outdoor eateries is another way to have car fun. The cruisers also met up with a group of cycle enthusiasts that were out to enjoy the day. The cruisers visited several quaint food stops and ended up at a local ice cream stand before heading home. As one cruiser put it, everyone had a day of “many smiles per miles.” — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki 12

Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Cruise How many of you remember cruising on a Saturday evening to your favorite hangout to enjoy a meal with your fellow car enthusiasts? It was always fun to show off you ride and talk cars. The Blacktop Villains Car Club, based in South Jersey, decide to hold their fun cruises on a Saturday evening just like back in the day. The location is a popular pizza restaurant called Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz in Malaga, New Jersey. There was no shortage of cars, great food and casual conversation. All the good things about the hobby are always found wherever cruisers get together. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki

Father’s Day Car Show Cruisers enjoy celebrating special occasions when it’s an opportunity to bring out their rides and support a good cause. The Father’s Day Car show and fundraiser at Racks Restaurant in Williamstown, N.J. was that special day tied to a special occasion. Presented by Hot Rod Garage, the show drew more than 100 rides and was a tribute to fathers everywhere as well as a fundraiser for pancreatic cancer research. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki

Evergreen Dairy Bar As we slowly get back into the cruising season of 2020, some states currently have different restriction than others. It does not necessarily mean no car fun, it just means a bit of a modification to how we enjoy the hobby. Well, it’s summertime and that means outdoor ice cream and food stands are great places to bring out the rides. A group of cruisers took advantage of a warm day by cruising over to the Evergreen Dairy Bar in Vincentown, NJ. It was a day for cruisers to drive their car, share conversation, and enjoy a treat in the great outdoors. It’s always a special time when a group of car enthusiasts can get together. Our hobby is about many miles of cruising smiles. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki

CRUISING 101 H

ello Muther. Hello Fathur. Here I am at Camp Quarantine. It’s stopped raining, the sun is shining, and the classics have found their way out of storage. After all, they could have caught the flu. Shows are starting to blossom once again. Tents are going up. BBQs are getting hot and once again there is life of sorts— a “new normal”—whatever that is. Well, it’s better than the four walls we’ve all gotten used to. Shows and cruises are starting to appear again, very few and far between, but at least they’re back. I personally would still call ahead and confirm the particulars. I don’t care what calendar you’re relying on, after this four-month dry spell, no calendar will be 100% accurate. So, spend 50 cents and call ahead. Thank you! Shows are resuming in much of the Mid-Atlantic, with masks required. I can’t get over the feeling that I’m still playing cops and robbers. Silly, I know, but tell me I’m the only one who feels this way. Shows are going to be, at best, strange. Imagine a spaced-out Carlisle event and the requirements of such an event. It’s mindboggling. Four people under each 10-x-10 tent, food lines, bathroom lines. Oh yeah, “no contact” trophy presentations. Well, it’s still better than being at home. People still need cooling areas, places to rest and water at events, especially in 90+-degree temperatures. Plus, keep in mind that not many in our hobby are getting any younger (except in our minds). There is a point when our “old cars” are in better shape than our “old bodies.” Who doesn’t remember going to Carlisle and enjoying a 14mile walk down the many aisles twice in one day? I now look for the nearest bench to park my butt. So, get out safely, support the events and ENJOY PEOPLE. They will make you smile and wonder how. See you soon at the events. PLEASE send or e-mail me your events so that I can update the calendar.

ell, it’s been one very unusual year so far. I do believe that 2020 will go down in the books as the year that got derailed from the tracks. Having said that, I will now get back to the business of writing about our passion: cruises, car shows, and now the “drive-by.” In discussions with fellow car enthusiasts over the many years I have been in the hobby, a topic that arises rather often is how do we get the younger generation involved with classic cars. Perhaps the various restrictions that came about because of the Covid-19 crisis may provide a bit of a silver lining. Clubs and independent car owners have begun to share their rides by forming in groups or as a club to participate in the “drive-by.” Or, as I have also heard it referred to as “the cruise-in.” Getting a group of car owners to stage somewhere and caravan to someone’s home or business to celebrate a special occasion is a great way to introduce our hobby to people who may not necessarily know about it. Perhaps some young guy or gal may see a specialty ride that rings a bell in their mind and motivates them to want to have a classic car of their own. Let’s face it, seeing a car that is a part of your celebration is a Kodak moment that stays with you. I do recall that many years ago in my hometown of Vineland, N.J., whenever there was a wedding there would be a group of cars that were decorated in crepe paper. When the loving new bride and groom emerged from the church, they would take a lap or two on the main avenue blowing horns and sharing their special moment with onlookers. The thing that I most vividly recall is the cool cars that were in the procession. Some were stately, elegant American cars of the day and at times there would be neat rides that reflected some of the hot cars of the new car season. My point is, we share good times and special memories with cars. The cruise-in of days gone by and the drive-by of today can be an influential experience on a person. The drive-by might be just the thing that gets some younger people into the old, classic or unique car hobby. So, as we slowly get back into the car scene, the drive-by is another activity in the hobby to go along with cruises and shows. Department of Health: Instead of the term face mask, can we car people give it a car name like facial air filter? Department of Fun: Reminder for rescheduled events, check your dates so as to keep date conflicts to a minimum. Department of Infectious Diseases: Cruising is infectious in a fun way. It’s quite catchy. Best cure…drive a classic ride. To everyone, stay safe and healthy!
