To Drive or Not To Drive That is the question for vintage car enthusiasts in a fast-paced, high-stress society By Frank Adkins 6

T

hat Saturday had all the ingredients of a perfect day. The sun was shining and my wife Kristy and I were heading to the annual picnic and car show hosted by one of the car clubs we belong to. We had already planned to stop for an early dinner after leaving the show, and then head to the Fox Run cruise near Newark, Del., late in the afternoon. We were driving the ’64 Dodge Dart that I’d owned for more than 15 years and had just recently finished restoring. The Dart was gobbling mile after mile of Delaware Rt. 1 North and we were engaged in light conversation as we approached Dover. And then it happened. A slow moving minivan in the left lane, driven by a woman who was more interested in tending to her children than driving, shot into the right lane as we started to overtake her. By reflex I jabbed the brakes. Many older cars are prone to premature rear wheel lock-up during hard braking, and the Dart is no exception. Despite the howl of our tires the van continued into our lane. Unable to drop back in time to avoid a collision I dove for the shoulder. With locked rear wheels our car fishtailed wildly as we left our lane. Instinctively I counter-steered and released the brake. Lucky for us the Dart snapped straight and our maneuver bought us the few precious seconds we needed to slow our pace below that of the van. I reentered our lane behind the minivan, then passed on the left. We were fortunate to have avoided making contact even if it was by mere inches. The only evidence of our near encounter was a fading plume of pungent tire smoke and some crazy S-shaped marks on the road and shoulder. Glaring at the offending driver as we rolled by, I don’t believe she had any inkling of the catastrophe she had nearly brought about. Despite our unwanted excitement the remainder of the day proved quite pleasant, and we enjoyed the company of several friends at each event. The Dart ran flawlessly for the 200 miles we added to the odometer and we returned home safely later that evening. Not long afterward I was driving our ’68 Road Runner to work one morning with plans to perform some routine maintenance that evening. I was in the right lane approaching an off ramp while another car passed me on the left. Just then a slow-moving driver in the turn lane for the off ramp decided he didn’t want to exit and he veered in front of me without looking first. I pummeled the brake pedal, but this time I had nowhere to go. Once again good fortune was with me, for the offending driver realized his error in time and turned back into his lane. A few days later we learned of another couple who had also encountered an incompetent driver while cruising in their collector car, but they were not so lucky. Thankfully nobody was hurt in their accident, but the car they hit was totaled and their car sustained damage to the tune of five figures. The good news is that so far the insurance company has been cooperative and they already have a body shop lined up, but they are now on the hunt for parts that have become elusive with time. They will also be without their car for the next several months or longer. These occurrences have caused me to reevaluate how we use and enjoy our special interest cars. I have long held the belief that automotive hobbyists can be divided into three groups—owners, builders, and drivers. For some, simply owning the car of their dreams is enough, even if it never leaves the garage. For others, it’s all about the

planning and building of a special car. These folks often progress to the point of having the mechanicals sorted out and the body in primer, then grow bored and move on to the next project. For people in the third group, the driving experience is what makes owning and building old cars worthwhile. Kristy and I are drivers, and we love nothing more than to spend a couple of hours of quality time behind the wheel of one of our cars while traveling to a show. For me, the drive is often just as enjoyable as the event itself. I’ve also found that nothing reinvigorates my soul, soothes my mind, or reconnects me with my youth like driving an old car. Although we own several old cars, each holds a special place in our hearts. Each serves a specific purpose and fills a certain void, and I doubt that anybody but a fellow car enthusiast could understand. On the few occasions that we have chosen to part with one of our old friends we have missed it terribly afterward. It’s like losing a member of the family. But these three recent traffic incidents have forced me to reexamine how we use our old cars. With traffic congestion on the rise, folks driving more aggressively than ever, and drivers increasingly distracted by foolish and dangerous indulgences such as cell phone conversations and texting, are we wise to expose our cherished family members to danger that could ultimately damage or destroy them? Should I continue enjoying them as I have for my entire adult life, since the days before they were considered collectible? Granted, our collector car insurance policy and antique vehicle registrations place restrictions on how we use our cars, but wouldn’t limiting our use beyond the car-related-events-only mandate be the responsible thing to do? But then I think, what’s the point in committing such a significant amount of time and money to owning, building, and maintaining a small fleet of cars that we can’t enjoy? If Kristy and I cherish driving these cars as much as we do, isn’t it worth accepting the inherent risk? Even if one of our close calls resulted in a collision, should that one unfortunate occurrence prevent us from enjoying the cars we love for years to come? I’m conflicted by these questions. There is no easy answer, though I think common sense must somehow prevail. Obviously there is no way to eliminate danger on the road, and each time we venture beyond the garage door there is a chance that disaster could strike. That said, we will continue to drive our cars often, but we are now more cautious about where and when we do so. I hope we never reach the point where we are so afraid to drive them that we can no longer enjoy them, but now we give more thought to the traffic we might encounter on our way to and from our destination. We choose our travel routes and times accordingly. And yes, sometimes we elect to leave the old cars at home. It could be argued that I’m getting soft as I grow older, but I prefer to think of it as redefining the boundaries of my comfort zone. As those circumstances that are beyond my control change, I must adapt. Our world is evolving. Time is marching forward and with each passing year traffic grows heavier, our cars grow older, and parts grow scarcer. I’ll never advocate for leaving our cars permanently locked away in the garage, but I think it would be wise for each of us to assess the driving conditions in our local areas from time to time so that we can enjoy our cars without needlessly exposing them to risks beyond our own personal comfort levels.

are we wise to expose our cherished

family members to danger that could ultimately damage or destroy them?

I Remember When

2014 Cars for a Cure Car Show

One would speculate that three words often spoken by senior car cruisers are “I remember when…” followed by a series of memories of days gone by. Well, here is a list of some of my memories in my teen cruising years. Living room furniture was covered in plastic. Every time you sat down it was like sitting on a styrene bottle. When it can time to make a call, your home telephone was a rotary dial and usually sat on a “Formica” end table. You may have even had a party line – someone else who has access to the phone line usage. There was plastic everywhere from the radios to the pastel colored summertime cups. If you weren’t driving, you were on a funky bicycle that had a tank. We lived in this world for many years and passed by it each day to get into our metal cars with AM radios and bias-ply tires. As a matter of fact…I remember when…

Many car events bring out the very generous nature of the members of the car community and, many times, other organizations that team up with said events. The second annual Cars for a Cure Car Show is one such happening where the goal is to raise money for children’s cancer research. One hundred and ninety motor enthusiasts registered their rides for this year’s event. Sam’s Bar & Grille in Blackwood, NJ, was the location for an early spring event that generated $25,000 in donations. This show was in conjunction with the St. Baldrick’s organization dedicated to children’s cancer research (stbaldricks.org). Part of the donations were raised by having sponsors shave their heads. Show promoters Gene Martinez and Joe Welch were beaming with pride at the sight of the participants and attendees that gave donations to help out a worthy cause. There were also some drag racing personalities that came out with their rides to assist with the show and encourage everyone to donate to the cause.

Cars & Coffee It’s probably safe to say that most people get their day going with a hot cup of coffee. Many car owners who set out to work on their ride, most likely, travel to the local convenience store first to purchase some high octane java. Therefore, the next logical step in the fun of the cruising hobby is to make that morning coffee run an event. The High Octane South Jersey group stages a Cars and Coffee Cruise each Saturday in two New Jersey locations (two cruises in Maple Shade, and the other two in Vineland). The Cars and Coffee event pictured takes place at Larry’s II restaurant and coffee shop in Vineland every first and third Saturday of the month. The rules are simple…just bring out your ride and enjoy some friendly conversation over a cup of coffee. Check out the High Octane schedule at highoctanesj.com. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The fun begins during the first week of June at the Carlisle Ford Nationals, June 6-8. This year is the 110th anniversary of Ford and the 50th anniversary of the fabled Ford Mustang. Carlisle will be home to some amazing pieces of automotive history via special displays and honors. First, to honor Ford itself, Building G is slated to host a 110 car/truck display that will showcase an automotive timeline starting from the early 20th century. The event will include lots of mustangs, including a 50 car/50 year display. Another great draw will be the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2015 Ford F-150 (not available for purchase). The vehicles will be accompanied by Ford engineers and representatives from the company. Saturday evening the Fords go downtown for the popular Downtown Carlisle Parade and Street Party, and the Carlisle Expo Center will host the Ford Go Further Ride and Drive Experience all weekend. Autocross enthusiasts can take passes on the course and speak with Ford experts on how to better enhance their ride. The Ford Racing Garage is back at Carlisle, providing onsite installations at no charge while guests walk the grounds and enjoy the show! The weekend includes a contest for a $2,000 Ford Racing Performance Parts Giveaway. Registration is live now via www.CarlisleEvents.com/GiveAways and the drawing is held on Saturday after 2 p.m. Four Matech GT1 race cars that completed at the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans will be making their U.S. debut during event weekend. This is the first time that these cars have been state side and will certainly be a draw for race and performance fans of all ages. Two weeks later, GM enthusiasts will have their turn with the Carlisle GM Nationals from June 20-22. The show is based around the Pontiac GTO. As part of the showcase, enthusiasts can meet the trio of men who were responsible for the development of the GTO: Milt Schornack, Russ Gee and Bill Collins. Also coming to Carlisle is an original Monkeemobile which was used on the TV program The Monkees. Not only has the car carried some very famous people, it also has an impressive history – check it out to learn more!

Another popular draw, especially for fans of the ‘70s movie Smokey and the Bandit, is a feature called the Bandit Run. The Bandit Run is a car cruise/road rally and is designed to honor the film as well as to encourage car enthusiasts to drive their collector cars. Also, the Solid Lifter Showroom is not to be missed. This display, located in and around Building G just outside of Gate 1, showcases a special 1969 display. Cars included will be rare and in some cases, part of a very limited production run. The show also includes fan favorites like a dyno machine, a swap meet, car corral, onsite autocross ridealongs, burnouts, kids activities, a women’s oasis and more. As the summer months continue, the hottest month brings one of the hottest shows on the schedule, The Chrysler Nationals from July 11-13. The event unofficially launches on Thursday, July 10, with a kick-off party and cruise-in at Cumberland Valley Motors in nearby Mechanicsburg, Pa. The free kick-off, presented by the Mopar Rebellion Car Club, draws upwards of 400+ cars and provides yet another great outlet for Mopar enthusiasts to congregate, talk shop and catch up on happenings since last year’s show. Throughout the weekend, the 100-year history of Dodge will be front and center. Unique displays include a special Race Hemi Reunion, a pre-war car display, an A12 Reunion and a special 50th anniversary display of the popular Plymouth Barracuda. The A12 showcase can be found within and around Building Y, while the ‘Cudas and Barracudas will be positioned in Building T. Numerous guests are scheduled to appear as part of these special celebrations, including Don Grotheer, Bob Riggle, Shirley Shahan, Mr. Norm and more. The weekend includes a Collector Car Appreciation Day ceremony, a birthday party for Dodge’s centennial, entertainment, the Dodge Power Rallye Tour, the Mopar Hall of Fame, a swap meet, car corral, burnouts, a contest for a Hemi engine, and more. Registration for the contest is available at www.CarlisleEvents.com/Giveaways. For more information on any of these events, visit www.carsatcarlisle.com. — Cruising Magazine 13

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey gang,

center chair of the president. Many club by-laws state that elections are held every year, however some terms run longer depending on the organization and some may even run for life. The truth of the matter is that most clubs elect officers who they hope will stay for life. I think I am one of those so called “lifers.” I can probably name ten other presidents who have that “lifer” tag on them as well. Well, let’s get to the point. Whenever your club elections are held, your rank and file vote for your officers to serve a term. If there is any doubt about the people you are putting in place, then nominate other members and replace your doubt. Often these officers who represent your organization must make decisions for the club before it gets to the members for a vote. You hope that all the correct decisions will be made for the betterment of the organization. With the vast amounts of personalities in an organization, many decisions will never please all. I find it upsetting when members among us would rather sit at car shows and gossip about the way their club is being run. This is not the case in every organization, but unfortunately it does exist. So, I say step right up to the plate, throw your hat in the ring and change that negative energy into positive energy for the betterment of your club. Who knows, a great leader may be hiding in there. In a nutshell, take pride in your organization, elect, or be elected to run your club. Face it, someone has to be at the top, but always remember one important element of any organization: a good leader will motivate his or her members to do the best they can with positive energy, not negative. Have you heard the saying, “It’s lonely at the top”? That certainly holds true for car club presidents. Behind the scenes, on the front lines or wherever, people look to the president for a final decision. Make it your best. I wish all the presidents of all the clubs out there a successful 2014 show season. Promote positive energy and just let the negatives graze peacefully in their own pastures under the hot sun. You never know, it might cool them down. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Don’t ever take the fun out of it. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

SHIFTINGGEARS By Ben Notaro • red63vet@verizon.net

I

was going through my stack of old car dealer brochures last month and I decided to look through them and reminisce about the good old days of American cars. As I leafed through the pages, I soon realized that there is something that made cars back in the 1960s and ’70s something so much more special than cars of today. Quite simply, the selection of models for almost any given car covered whatever automotive need you had. Now, for instance, how did you like your Chevy? We have, say, the 1962 Impala that you can get in a two door coupe or convertible. Perhaps a station wagon is in order? Too much money and you need to budget a bit more? Then let’s go to the Biscayne in a four door or a two coupe. Of course, there is the bubble back version too. If you are feeling sporty, you can get a convertible in the Impala line. Now let’s see what I can order on my car. I’ll get a four speed or a three speed for the standard transmission. Then again, a power glide may do if I’m not up to shifting. Will it have a bench or bucket seats for the ride? Color choices were most plentiful and interiors were often more varied than today. In my opinion, today’s car interiors are either black, beige or some form of tan or white. Also the Chevy Impala, Ford Galaxy and Dodge Charger, among others, were two door coupes at their best. Most all rides today seem to be four doors. I was told that is the European look, but I’ll take my ride American-themed any day. I guess the Camaro, Mustang, Corvette and Challenger owners are still smiling since their cars still have the “old” theme in style and models. Yes, as I look at the many pieces of car literature of the so-called height of American car manufacturing, I’m very happy to have been born in a time when the makers of our domestic rides gave us choices that were as varied as possible.

CRUISING 101

Hey Cruisers, Well, gang, summer’s here, and I’m enjoying the heat – yes, I said enjoying! If it gets too hot, there is always a stream, lake or ocean to jump into. I’m in N.J. after all. And of course for those of us at an event, cool water is always available and if we’re lucky it may even be a cold one! Here’s a Cruising 101 tip: the night before an event, put a six-pack of water into your freezer, and you’ll have cold water all day and even be able to keep food cool in your ice chest with no mess. And no draining it afterwards – and you didn’t even have to go out to buy a bag of ice! Recently, I attended a show at the Stone Mansion in Sewell. It was a wellattended event with quite a few vehicles I had not seen before. It was run well, on-time, and interesting. Well done! Everyone please take a look through this issue’s calendar; there are a lot of first-time events and some may be in your neighborhood. This calendar has enough new ideas for anyone. I announced last issue that I had purchased a vehicle, a 1978 Cadillac Flower Car, kind of a modified hearse. For those of you who know me, you’ll understand. Although, I will say the words “tubbed,” “wheelie bars,” “tunnel ram” and “side pipes” come to mind. In the Aug.-Sept. issue of Cruising I’ll return to my day of writing full stories. It has been quite a few years, but I hope that you will enjoy my efforts. Side note: If you know me, you know I love my ice cream and milkshakes. It’s not summer without one. So in my travels, I recently visited the Custard Corral in Millville for their car show, and of course sampled their goods. I also went to Bridgeton to the Amish Village and had some of their homemade ice cream and enjoyed their 100 car turnout. Finally, over I went to The Purple Penguin for their show and a movie. Love these shows that include ice cream. If your event has this item, look for me and maybe it’ll get my seal of approval.

See you at the shows! And by the way, I like cherry shakes.

Department of Health: Blasting a car radio to the max is the perfect way to keep the economy going. In a few years these audio junkies will be buying tons of hearing aids. Department of Health: Breakfast, cars and coffee gatherings help start our day with proper nourishment. I wish you all a million miles of smiles as the cruisin’ summer of 2014 descends upon our hobby.
