The Future of Automotive Technology Is it in danger? By Frank Adkins

A

disturbing trend has been quietly advancing for several years, and it’s one that could soon become problematic for those in our hobby and even for the entire motoring public. Seasoned automotive technicians, body repair technicians and refinishers are growing older by the day and there is not enough new blood coming into these fields to replace them as they retire. I have witnessed firsthand the steady rise of the average age of mechanical, body and refinishing technicians, which most surveys report to be between 40 and 45. When I took my first dealership job nearly 30 years ago, the oldest mechanic in the shop was 32 and we called him Pops. Most of us were in our early 20s, though we had been working on cars since our mid-teens. 6

Today I teach automotive technology, but I return to a small dealership every summer. There, three techs are in their 50s, two are in their late 40s, one is in his late 30s, and one is about 30. Although the average age continues to climb, 70 percent of the shop staff is older than the national average age and more than 40 percent is over 50 years old. Within the next 10 years, all of the 50-somethings will retire. Of course, retention of the technicians currently in the business has been an evergrowing problem as wages in our area have not kept pace with the Consumer Price Index. In fact, most of the experienced technicians I spoke to report earning less annually now than they did 10 to 15 years ago without taking inflation into account. Most of the folks working in the business steer their kids away from it, which is a telling sign. Furthermore, the majority of those who enter the field stay less than five years. â–ş

Currently, this trend affects mostly mainstream repair shops and dealerships, and on a lower level, the restoration and custom build shops – the same establishments we entrust to help us transform our automotive visions into reality. John Truman, owner and operator of Truman Muscle Cars, a small restoration shop in southern New Jersey with a list of clients that includes Jay Leno, isn’t feeling too optimistic. That’s because area schools in Atlantic County, Cumberland County, and Camden County have all shut down their body shop programs. Furthermore, many post-secondary programs have scaled back their offerings, too. (Automotive repair college Wyotech in Laramie, Wyoming, has closed one campus and was reportedly on the verge of closing another for a time.) Truman met with the local high school board twice in an effort to convince them not to shut the New Jersey county school programs down, and offered to assist however possible – including offering to teach students restoration skills. “My son is a graduate of that program, and he learned a lot. Only true craftsmen can do what we do, and we need to get more kids coming into the business. There is a huge difference between normal ‘scratch and dent’ repairs and automotive restoration. But I got nowhere [with the school board]. It seems the superintendent is done with it,” says Truman. From the perspective of the high schools, the problem is multi-faceted. First, these programs are expensive to operate. They require far more floor space than many other programs and it is costly to remain current with equipment and technology. With the main emphasis in schools placed on academics, funding for these programs is often minimal. Moreover, many automotive teachers report increasing pressure to integrate academics into their programs, which most do not oppose, but inevitably it cuts into the time available to teach automotive topics. This is especially problematic, for as technology expands they must also cover more automotive material within the allotted time. Of course, the stigma that automotive trades involve people working with their hands and not with their minds lives on with some administrators, counselors and school board members. But Doug and Kathy DeAngelis, owners of Elite Fleet Services in Newark, Del., agree that manual labor skills alone aren’t the sole necessity for the industry. “To be a mechanic you have to be able to do it all – hydraulics, plumbing, electrical, and computers,” says Doug. “But none of it means anything if you can’t use your head. If you can’t comprehend reference material, think logically, and approach a problem intelligently, this is not the place for you.” Bob Miller, a former instructor at Automotive Training Center in Exton, Pa., once posed the question, “If you don’t understand how something is supposed to work, how will you ever figure out why it doesn’t work?” Today’s students are also much different than the students of just a generation ago. DeAngelis explains that many kids used to work on their bicycles, then move up to small engines, and finally cars. They knew their way around a toolbox by the time they were ready to work on cars and they couldn’t wait to get their driver’s licenses. In contrast, the majority of today’s children grow up playing X-Box. As an automotive instructor and program advisor, I frequently talk to potential students who think they want to go into automotive technology despite having never been under the hood of a car. For example: when I asked one potential student what brought him to my department, he replied, “I love to draw cars and I love playing the video games.” Too often students come to the program expecting it to be easy and involve only hands-on work. When they see that’s not the case, they move on. Many automotive programs utilize an aptitude test to determine which students are likely to succeed in their studies. Others have no screening process in place. “That’s a problem,” said Kevin Cahall, an automotive technology teacher at Caroline Career and Technology Center in Ridgely, Md. The effectiveness of high school programs in Maryland is measured by students’ pass rates at the end of program assessments offered by the National Automotive

Technician Education Foundation. NATEF certifies automotive programs and is a close sister of the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), which certifies automotive technicians. CCTC has no process to evaluate students’ interest or aptitude for automobiles. Counselors often direct students into the automotive classes when they are unsuccessful in their academic classes and/or when they have a history of discipline problems. Furthermore, students can take one or two automotive classes as electives without enrolling in the full program. “A new curriculum is about to be rolled out. When it is, hopefully that will change and we won’t have the ‘drop-ins’ taking just one class as an elective,” says Cahall. Cahall hopes that allowing only those students who are willing to commit to completing the entire program will deter the students who aren’t serious about an automotive career. As it stands, when the NATEF assessment pass rate percentages of Cahall’s program are compared to those at schools elsewhere in the state – schools with proper screening processes in place – he and his program both appear to be below par. Another criterion used to evaluate the effectiveness of automotive programs is the post-graduate survey which tracks whether or not graduates are working in their field. Graduates who pursue post-secondary education or go into the military are not counted against the program, but those working in other career fields are counted against the program. High schools in rural areas, such as CCTC, typically score lower than schools in more metropolitan areas because there are more entry level automotive job openings in those areas. A reality that is seldom discussed is that not everybody who likes cars is well suited to work on them as a fulltime occupation. When automotive educators prepare students for automotive careers, nobody argues that they are providing a needed service. But Cahall feels that when an automotive educator works with a student and helps that student come to the realization that the automotive field isn’t a good match, the educator has provided an equally important service. “It’s better to find out now that a student isn’t going to make it in the field for whatever reason than it is for him to fail after he’s left high school and taken on student loans for post-secondary education, tool debts, and other obligations,” says Cahall. Still, although the student has benefitted from his experience, statistically he is counted against the program. Obviously the statistics don’t always reflect the real value of a program, but when those numbers appear on paper and are evaluated by the people who make the decisions governing the school, those folks often draw unfavorable conclusions. School board members and superintendents are understandably reluctant to continue funding historically low-performing programs no matter the reason. Ultimately, those programs will die. Hagerty Insurance Company has seen where the future of the industry is heading and they are especially concerned that the skills necessary to restore and preserve collector cars will one day be a lost art. To help ensure that does not happen they are doing something about it with their Hagerty Education Program. This program awards scholarships and educational grants to those who seek to attract young people to the world of automotive restoration, and it has doled out $2.75 million since 2005. While Hagerty’s achievements are impressive, they alone cannot fix the problem. We all need to get involved. You can support the programs in your area by donating cars, parts, tools, and other supplies, but also make sure you are heard. If you are affiliated with an automotive business consider joining the advisory boards of these programs. Often the school principals sit in these meetings and they will pass your input up the chain of command. Call or write letters to the superintendent and school board members. Don’t let the programs in your area be the next to close. And, on a positive note, the entire situation hasn’t reached a dire point just yet. Just ask Dave Ferro, owner of Dave’s Totally Auto, a high-end Mopar restoration shop in Feasterville, Pa., and he’ll give a surprising answer. “Honestly, in my little corner of the world, I don’t see it at all. There’s always a 20-something around wanting to learn,” Ferro says. 7

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Caring Cruisers Saint Isidore’s Car Show One can easily say that car shows have personalities of their own based on where they are located. Church shows are neat because the locations are easy to identify and there is usually a family day planned along with the event. The fifth annual St. Isidore’s car show in Vineland, N.J., hosted such a day for car guys and gals to come out and bring the whole family. It was a day of pleasant weather that saw nearly 100 rides, with a battle of the DJs, visit from Miss Vineland (pictured) and more. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

If you are a member of the cruising car community, you are no stranger to the fact that car enthusiasts will always be ready to support a good cause. One such event that started the cruising season of 2015 was the Cars For A Cure show held at the Paris-Caterers facility in Blackwood, N.J. Participants from all over the area came to support this show in an effort to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for pediatric cancer research. How strong do guys and gals feel about helping find a cure, you may ask? Well, with pledges and donations as well as proceeds for the 250 cool rides in the show, nearly $22,000 was raised to help the cause. Some sponsored participants even volunteered to have their heads shaved. With lots of great trophies, three DJs for music and a Chinese auction, Cars for A Cure definitely made its mark on helping to support a very worthy cause. The Blackwood Fire Department put on one hot car show. Check out www.stbaldricks.org to see how you can help the cause, too. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Gene Martinez

The Old Days Are Back Having grown up “back in the day,” I remember the silvery aluminum and porcelain diners that dotted the landscape. They were so cool with their art deco interiors bedazzled with chrome and stainless steel. You could play music from the jukebox and have a meal that was fun to enjoy with friends and family. Well, there still is such a place, which thankfully recently re-opened. It’s the 54 Diner on Route 54 in Buena, N.J. This is a way-back machine where the aforementioned description of food and fun still exists today. A grand opening was recently held along with a car show to celebrate this restaurant’s return to business. The show was complete with a cruisin’ DJ, Philly Carol, and her fellow host New York Cathy. The oldies music set the tone for a nostalgic time. You had to be there to appreciate the feeling of days gone by. If you are in the Buena area, stop and bring the gang. It’s not too often that we get a chance to go back in time to have a malted milk, a burger and get to cruise into the good old days.

Who doesn’t love a warm-weather outdoor event? The smell of great food cooking on the grille, a cold beverage and a cruise with fine rides and a good cause just makes for a pleasant day, and such was the case at Uncle Ricky’s Cruise at Uncle Ricky’s Outdoor Bar and Grill in Vineland, N.J. This cruise benefitted local resident Gia Creaturo (pictured), a young girl fighting cancer. The funds are assisting with her medical expenses. The classic cruise drew 137 cars and 40 motorcycles from all over the South Jersey area. The event was a cooperative effort put on by Uncle Ricky proprietor Rick Fiocchi and local WVLT 92.1 FM radio personality Al Snyder. As an example of the generosity of the car community, the 50/50 winner donated the winnings to Creaturo’s family.

The Big Mother Flying Car Show Good Times & Great Food One of the neat things about car events is the location. Every place has a specialty, from food to entertainment. A great spot, Steak Outs Home Plate Restaurant in Pittsgrove, N.J., recently held a 5th annual car show. The many rides that participated in this event came out on a bright April day to share some good times and great food. The steakhouse also opened its new addition to the show which was an outdoor, open air bar called the Pavilion. This area even had hammocks to lounge on. Now you have a car show that has all of the fun of the great outdoors combined with the eye candy of the assorted rides. Definitely high stakes fun. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 10

When two dedicated friends and business owners decided to put on a car event for the first time, they made sure that they covered all of the bases. The first is the location. How about a small airport in a scenic area? That place would be the Flying W Air Port in Medford, N.J. Barry Hogdon and Betty Barbagallo hit it right on target with a car show that netted over 250 rides at this inaugural Big Mother Flying Car Show event. The cars ranged from mild to wild and people came from all over to listen to live music and the sounds of cruisin’ DJ music. There was a beauty contest that brought many lovely ladies giving us a class event that harkened to the golden age of classic beauty pin ups. Let’s not forget the great food, along with vendors and activities that made for a memorable event for both young and old. Betty and Barry, owners of Dead Rodz Revival, also made sure that their favorite charity No Dog Gets Left Behind teamed up for one Big Mother Flying Car Show. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Chris Tobin

Do you ever go to a cruise or show and get a good vibe from talking to great car guys and gals, or see an especially great ride? Here are some car “family” photos – it’s the smiles and cars that make this hobby fun. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Beers & Gears Packs Them In At Delaware Park The Delaware Beers & Gears Show held May 9 at Delaware Park is rapidly becoming a First State tradition. The event, produced by TRISAW Events, had 347 pre-registered cars and more than 500 turn out on show day. That’s an impressive turnout for a second-time event. In addition to awarding more than 400 trophies in nine categories, the event also featured a craft beer festival in The Grove, which gave attendees the opportunity to sample more than 20 varieties of beer. Beers & Gears returns October 24 with a fall show at Delaware Park. — Cruising Magazine

Summer 2015 Has It All: Carlisle will shatter records this season with Ford Nationals, GM Nationals and Carlisle Chrysler Nationals’ Mopar Madness Rev the engines, summer at Carlisle is here. Three automotive events – Ford Nationals (June 5-7), GM Nationals (June 26-28) and Chrysler Nationals’ Mopar Madness (July 10-12) – at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pa., will make this an unforgettable season. First up, the 20th anniversary of the Carlisle Ford Nationals, from June 5-7, is expected to shatter all automotive records. Special guests, celebrations and more than 100 years of history on display will make this event, the world’s largest all-Ford themed show, a mustattend for all blue oval enthusiasts. More than 3,000 cars and 50,000 guests are expected onsite, with exciting things like a Ford GT reunion, Thunderbird reunion and special reunion of the GT350 Mustang. Making the family-friendly weekend even better is the downtown Carlisle parade, onsite seminars hosted by industry experts, test drives with Ford, dozens of awards, autocross ridealongs presented by Gateway Mustang and more. From June 26-28, remember the pop culture of the ’80s at Carlisle GM Nationals Weekend. The weekend will feature the IROC-Z Camaro, a 1980s cover band known as My80s, thrills from NHRA Hall of Famer Bruce Larson, who solidified his place in the automotive world with his ’89 championship victory, a beauty contest with some ’80s flavor and more. However, the weekend isn’t just about what happened 30 years ago; it focuses on eras from long before the ’80s as well, along with modern rides – and of course, lots of vendors. All GM vehicles are welcome, including the new 5th generation Camaro and a special Camaro in Building G. A swap meet, Cumberland Valley Corvette Club runs and more are featured. When Carlisle Chrysler Nationals’ Mopar Madness invades the fairgrounds July 10-12, event attendees will be able to meet legendary drivers, see cool cars and enjoy a historic milestone. The weekend is expected to draw 50,000 guests and more than 2,500 cars, while also serving as an outlet for an international audience to converge to buy, sell and trade all things Mopar. This year’s show will not only present some of the best new products available to consumers, it will honor Forward Look cars, the Dodge and Plymouth Neon twins, the 1970 AAR ‘Cudas & Challenger T/As and introduce guests to the next wave of Mopar Hall of Famers. Though not officially a show day, the fun starts Thursday, July 9, with a must-attend cruise to the neighboring Carlisle Expo Center for a kick-off party backed by the Mopar Rebellion Car Club. Enjoy music, food and beer samples at nearby establishment, Market Cross Pub. Collector Car Appreciation Day (Friday), a Forward Look Reunion, classical cars and more will be celebrated during the weekend. For times, prices and more information on all events, visit CarlisleEvents.com or call 717-243-7855.

SYRACUSE NATIONALS ARE BACK 16th annual event is set for July 17-19 at the New York State Fairgrounds

R

eady for the hottest show of the summer? The largest car show in the Northeast, the PPG Syracuse Nationals, returns to the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, N.Y., for the 16th year from July 17-19. The three-day automotive extravaganza, including bands, vendors and more entertainment, has become a tradition for thousands of classic car and truck owners and their families from all over the country and Canada. The event is open to hot rods, muscle cars, classics and customs manufactured up to 1980. Last year the event drew a record crowd, with more than 88,000 people and 8,022 classic cars from 34 states and six Canadian provinces. The event also raised more than $104,000 for charity; since 2000, the show has raised over $835,000. This year, the Horticulture Building will become “Gasoline Alley” again, displaying more than 40 vintage race cars representing all types of racing, including asphalt and dirt oval, drag racing, road course and grand prix. Returning to this year’s event is the autocross track. Owners with vehicles registered in the show and a valid license will be able to test their skill, for free, on an autocross course set up between Gates 10 and 11 throughout the weekend. The third annual “Back-Yard Build-Off” will also take place at the Nationals. Each builder must stay below a $5,000 total budget in order to compete. The four builders will unveil their never-before-seen creations on July 17 at 10 a.m. in the Ol’

Skool Rodz building near Gate 10. The winner will be decided by popular vote and will be announced on July 19. One car owner at the 2015 Syracuse Nationals will receive the Sixth Annual Winfield Award presented by Meguiar’s. The prestigious award for automotive excellence will be presented by master car customizer and builder Gene Winfield. The winner will receive a custom trophy, jacket and $10,000. The five runners-up will each receive a custom trophy, jacket and $1,000. Additionally, inside the Horticulture Building, pinstripe and airbrush artists at the pinstripers’ panel jam, known as “Artie’s Party,” work almost around the clock during the Nationals to hand-paint original automotive artwork on items of all kinds, from vehicle panels to skateboards to mailboxes. The one-of-a-kind items are then auctioned throughout the weekend, with this year’s proceeds benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York. The notfor-profit organization serves as a “home away from home” for families whose children are hospitalized with serious illnesses or injuries. Last year “Artie’s Party” raised more than $70,000 for the charity. Wheels and Wings During the Second World War, the United States constructed additional airports up and down the Eastern Seaboard. The first airport on the East Coast designed for defense against enemy aircraft and submarines was built in Millville, N.J., in 1941. This facility is still active today for aviation use. The Millville Army Airfield Museum located at the airport coordinated the air show that featured the United Air Force jet team: the Thunderbirds. The Golden Knights Parachute Team also performed. There were numerous plane displays and historic warbirds to check out from a bygone era. The South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Group held the “wheels” part of the event with over 250 rides (in total) that were in attendance at this two-day event. Rides from five states came out to be a part of the show. Car show participants had the best (car) seat in the house by being part of the event. Planes and cars have a deep-rooted history in this area and it showed at the Wheels and Wings Show. Check out the Millville Army Air Field Museum at www.p47millville.org for information on this historical facility. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Donna Vertolli

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Well, folks,

The 2015 show and cruise season is really booming. There have been some great shows and cruises already and we aren’t even halfway through the season. I hope you’ve had the chance to get out and enjoy these fine events, and if for whatever reason you haven’t, you still have many chances. Take advantage of the beautiful weather and get out there! One of the issues I hear a lot about at events: balancing family life with your hobby. It’s always great to see car guys and gals bringing out the family when attending shows and cruises. This works well for some families, but not for all. Many of us spend hours at a time in the garage, building, cleaning and servicing our cars in preparation for the next event. Family members will either be okay with this or not so cool with this. Obviously, we all would like to make this hobby a family affair, but sometimes that’s not the case. That’s what makes us all different. Simply because your passion is cars, does not necessarily mean the rest of the family has that same passion. I have noticed throughout the years that religious activities, vacations, birthdays, sporting activities, weddings and so on have kept car guys and gals from attending events. In my opinion, the family events must always come before the hobby. It has happened to me many times, as I’m sure it has with you, and more than likely will continue to happen in the future. As president of a local club it is painfully hard not to attend my own show or cruise, but that’s how it must be. Now, on the other hand, there will be some whose opinions differ, so I’ll repeat my earlier statement that we are all different. In an earlier issue of this magazine, Frank Adkins promoted taking our young people to a car show, spending garage time with them and showing them what these historic rides are all about. I couldn’t agree more! What better way to get the family involved and meet other families? My 16-month grandson has already attended some events. Too many of our young people are attached to the computer world and never leave that screen. I suppose our society needs this, but remember when you were a kid? We were never in the house, and now, they are never out of the house. Involvement is the key to any successful family unit in any hobby. Get the youth out of the house and enjoy a great cruise with ice cream. I’m also a member of a national car club that meets once a year in a different state. I can tell you that kids, spouses, significant others, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews –and whoever else wants to join the party – are there. Over the years these strangers-at-first have now become extended family. It’s like having a family reunion every year in a different part of the country. I suppose my point in all this is that the car hobby has a way of bringing families together as long as you can manage the balancing act between needs and wants. This hobby has a lot of good to offer; focus on that. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Let’s all remember that! Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang, Summer has finally made it! No spring, just 80 degree temperatures and higher. At the dealership where I work, it’s easy to watch cars quickly turn yellow with pollen, even after just washing them thirty minutes prior. Hurry up, thunderstorms, get rid of this yellow menace. It’s rough going to a show and spending the whole time “dusting” off the car. I’m glad I have a rat rod! Now, as most of you know, I haven’t had a vehicle to show in a while. It’s a long story. But recently, I bought a ’78 five-door Caddy Flower Car. I’m making it a basic rat rod. I’ve noticed something major in the hobby. Prices have gone up – and up and up. I suppose I’ve been out of touch on that aspect. I’ve been in the hobby for a long time, and never did any body work, so now I’m learning the hard way by trial and error. If I mess up a quote, I’ll throw out a few choice words and start over. I know we’ve all been there, and probably will be again. But all that said, my Flower Car will be at the Downtown Millville Show (hopefully). I don’t know what level of completion it will be in, but unless something unforeseen happens, it will be in attendance. If nothing else, I’ve gained a lot more respect for those who have the knowledge to work on their own cars and keep them in pristine shape. The Cruising staff is always out and about, and we are rarely all at the same location at once. But if we are, it must be a good event, or we got lost. Whatever the reason, we are happy to meet our readers and enjoy talking with you. I’ve had the pleasure to attend quite a few shows this past spring and I notice there are a lot more vehicles coming out this season. Was cabin fever that bad? I know that by August some will be looking for the cooler fall days, but after this past winter, I say, “Heat…good!” Just stay hydrated, and don’t compromise your health to “just be at an event.” We’ve lost many in the off season. Let’s not during the season. See you at the events. I’ll be the one behind his vehicle with his feet up on the bumper, relaxing and sound asleep. It’s not the engine, just me snoring.

O

ne day not long ago, I was running an errand close to home. Like usual, I passed one of the few junkyards in my hometown in Vineland, N.J. This time, the first thing I noticed was that the front of the business was cleaned out of all junk cars and all quick vestiges, suggesting that changes were hitting the automobile bone yard. It really hit me how the days of the auto salvage yards in my hometown area had dwindled to practically nothing. Thinking back to the good old days of Shadetree Automobile repair, I recall trips to the local bone yard where I would either tell the counterman what I needed or would pay a few dollars for an entrance fee and go pick what I needed off a junker, paying for the part when I left the place. Automobile junkyards have a unique fascination of their own. If you are a car junkie, as you walk past each car or row of cars, you may sometimes wonder what stories these cars could tell. Were they there from racing or perhaps an accident? Did they have some hidden treasure still locked in the glovebox or the trunk? I look at each car and marvel that at one time they were new and without flaws. Now they rest in silent repose many times reduced to a skeleton of rusted decay. Each vehicle seems to be quietly waiting for a new person to pick some part(s) from their remains to recycle them into a second chance on another ride. The classic car landscape goes through many phases in the name of progress. Cars that were once the cherished icons of the road are becoming harder to find. Let’s hope that this rapid diminishing of collector cars and original parts cars slows down so that the next generation of car enthusiast will have a chance to roam the great American boneyard for classic parts. Department of What’s Correct: Events have rules and requests. Please respect them. Department of Loyalty: Support those who support our hobby. We want their donations to help pay for our events. They would like our patronage to support their business.

Thank you, and take care.
