THE WHEELS OF INSPIRATION By Frank Adkins
I
n the rock band Foreigner’s hit song Jukebox Hero, Lou Gramm recounts the tale of a young would-be concertgoer who was shut out of a sold-out show for lack of a ticket. Standing outside in the rain, he could hear the first wailing guitar as the show began. It resonated with him, and the experience launched him toward his destiny of becoming a rock star. Years later, as he and his band entered a concert hall, he saw a kid much like himself, standing outside in the rain, longing to see the show, but unable to enter the building. It was a flashback moment that drew him back to a point in time long ago when he was just like that kid. Last fall, at the Fox Run Cruise, I had a similar experience. I had arrived late in the afternoon and parked my Plymouth among the early arrivals while others filtered into the parking lot. It was a sunny, cool, and breezy day – ideal for a cruise or car show. As expected, the turnout was huge. I casually made the rounds, talked with other folks, and observed row after row of cars. At length I gave my arthritic knees a break as I sank into a lawn chair and fell into conversation with a small group of friends.
6
I had been seated for some time when a young man approached. He waited until there was a lull in our conversation before he spoke. He asked if I owned the blue ’70 Charger R/T parked nearby. He said he had a couple of questions about it. I said, “No, but I know who does. His name is Mike and he’s a friend of mine.” Scanning the parking lot I continued, “I don’t see him, but I can try to answer your questions.” We walked to Mike’s car as he explained that he had a relative who owned a ’69 Charger with a Hemi, and that he was willing to sell it to him for $1,000 dollars. Immediately I thought, Yeah, right kid! What have you been smoking? But I suppressed my skepticism. Veterans of the car hobby know that although stories of rare and/or high-end muscle cars for sale at giveaway prices pervade our world, they almost never pan out. But on rare occasion they do. Regardless, whether or not I believed his story was irrelevant. What mattered was that he believed it, and it was clear to me that he did. Perhaps it was true, but even if it wasn’t, I had no right to express my unfounded disbelief to him.
Recognizing his naïve enthusiasm, I couldn’t help seeing a lot of myself as a teen. Already it was obvious that he was not a typical kid. He was well-spoken, wellmannered, and respectful, but he also exuded an air of maturity and of self-confidence without the slightest hint of cockiness. Furthermore, he reeked of ambition. “Are these good cars?” he asked. I replied that, indeed they were, but that they were old, and parts weren’t always easy to come by. I asked him what condition his relative’s car was in. He said that it had some rust. It ran, but hadn’t been driven in a long time. Then he asked, “Aren’t the Chargers similar from 1968 through 1970?” He had already begun educating himself. Impressive! But this young man, at 12-years-old, was impressive in other ways. His demeanor was that of a serious man twice his age. He was young and inexperienced, but he made no attempt to conceal those facts nor to overcompensate for them. He craved knowledge, and he was taking logical steps to acquire it – by asking older, experienced guys who owned cars similar to the one he wanted. Few kids from any generation would take the initiative to do so. He listened to what I said, and I could see him processing it. I explained that fixing up a car, any car, required time and money. He nodded, undaunted. For rust repair panels I mentioned Auto Metal Direct. He was familiar with that company and it was apparent that he had already investigated their offerings. I went on to explain that a Hemi Charger wouldn’t be practical enough to drive daily, and that he really needed an everyday car. Even so, I stressed that the Charger would be a worthwhile project. Regardless of condition, a Hemi Charger was worth far more than his relative’s asking price. Furthermore, if he decided to abandon the project, he would be able to get his money out of it and then some. He nodded, taking it all in. My father was not an automotive hobbyist, nor was he overly knowledgeable about the workings of automobiles. To obtain the knowledge I needed, I, too, had to look outside of the family. I recalled some of the conversations I had with older guys when I was new to cars. I took what they said, digested it, and committed most of it to memory. Unfortunately, my greatest hindrance was my shy, introverted nature. Unlike this young man, I was afraid to approach strangers and ask questions. I acquired my first car, a ’64 Dodge Dart four-door, when I was 15. Immediately I set about replacing its ailing automatic transmission with a floor-shifted, three-speed manual transmission. I asked a few questions of others, but for the most part I had to go it alone. I didn’t have the foresight to educate myself ahead of time. My greatest ally was a buddy who had put a clutch in his father’s Pinto. At first, I figured he knew all there was to know about manual transmissions, but I soon learned otherwise. Eventually I succeeded in my efforts, but I encountered numerous dead-ends that I could have avoided had I first educated myself. Cody was taking preemptive steps to shorten his learning curve. By now several other gray-haired guys had gathered nearby to take in our exchange. Most nodded with encouragement, and one offered to double the young man’s money. Of course, he was joking. I think we all felt as if we were looking into a mirror, one that could erase decades from our true ages.
Teen car enthusiast Cody Russell with a friend’s ‘67 396 Camaro.
Soon the conversation shifted to how he would finance the refurbishment of his Charger. At 12, he didn’t hold a traditional part-time job, but he cut grass to earn money. He produced his business card – Cody’s Lawn Care. At his age I, too, cut grass for several people in my neighborhood. Most of my customers were also customers on my morning newspaper route, so I didn’t have to work hard to drum up business. The idea of starting a formal operation with marketing materials such as business cards never occurred to me. I employed the moniker F.A. Landscaping, but it was for the sole purpose of obtaining a business discount at Kirkwood Auto Parts. Again, despite our similarities, Cody outshone me. I am confident that Cody’s future is bright, and I believe he will succeed at anything he puts his mind to. I hope he was able to obtain his Charger. Even if he didn’t, I am certain he will acquire and build another interesting car, and he will do it well. Furthermore, I believe he will soon be as entrenched in the car hobby as any of us senior members. Finally, I hope that one day many years from now he encounters another young man much like the young man he is today. Flashback moments such as this renew our perspective and validate the time and money we’ve spent pursuing our passions.

A rare Cheetah comes back to life
Spring Thaw Cruise
8
I think it would be safe to say that many of us who are involved in the car hobby dread the weather hurting an event. After all, rainouts do happen. But what about snow hurting an event…in early April, no less? Well, Mother Nature threw out a few inches of snow the Saturday prior to a few events on the next day. But did a snowy spring day for cruising get cancelled? No. The members the South Jersey Cruisers Association held their Spring Thaw Cruise at the Vineland High School parking lot in Vineland, N.J., albeit amid fields of freshly-fallen snow. Fortunately, the attendance was good and the tarmac’s warmth melted the snow from the previous day. The group also managed to raise $300 in donations for a local little girl afflicted with cancer. Good vibes from the car community, a great DJ and a group of dedicated car enthusiasts made for a true Spring Thaw event.
Back in the days of auto racing, some Detroit car manufactures supported the racing enthusiast with help that was considered out the back door. That occasionally meant getting performance equipment to racers past corporate bosses. Chevrolet wanted to assist some racers. One such group of individuals created a competition ride known as the Cheetah. Chevy “assisted” them with some go-fast goodies. There were only about 23 of the cars made and they were one-of-a-kind. Needless to say, putting one together today is a very daunting task due to parts availability. But we must never underestimate the resolve of a car enthusiast, like Doug Bonner, a car guy and talented welding instructor. Doug located an original Cheetah and was able to research how the car was built. His goal was to duplicate this legendary machine in every way. Doug, being the master welder that he is, set about making a car that replicates the vehicle. To find out more about the Cheetah, head over to the computer and find out about a machine that was truly special in many ways. Hope you enjoy some of these construction shots.

The Devil in the Dark American Iron sets the pace
Wheels of Thunder Spring Cruise Spring weather ushers in a new season that is made for us car enthusiasts. There is something about hopping into our ride and cruising over to a nice location to hang out with the car guys and gals. The fine team of the Wheels of Thunder Classic Car Club planned a spring cruise and all of the right components fell right into place for a cool event. The air was cool and the day was bright and sunny for the club’s cruise held at the huge Wal-Mart parking lot in the outskirts of Bridgeton, N.J. The lot was packed with rides of many makes and models. Tunes from a DJ and hot dogs and hamburgers cooked outside on the grill made for a season opener that got the juices flowing for car fun in the sun. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Automobile races are a test of long-term endurance for their participants and, of course, the cars that are used in a race. Running a car for twelve hours in a competition of long-term endurance is exactly what the South Jersey Region Sports Car Club of America had in mind with their “Devil in the Dark” 12-hour race. This event also became a unique experience for a certain Corvette owner. Marty Pinder, managing partner of Conte’s Corvettes and Classics in Vineland, N.J., was given an opportunity that not too many Vette owners will be lucky enough to get: having their very own personal ride pace the race. Marty’s 1995 Corvette Indy Pace Car replica pace car was the ride that led 37 racers to run on very rainy spring day. There were performance cars from foreign to domestic including a classic Dodge Dart and even an electric experimental. Of course the original American muscle car, the Corvette, showed it was the leader of the pack and it also showed that Vette owners aren’t afraid to get their cars wet in the rain just to have some fun. I’m sure Marty is now gearing up for the next time he can take that fiberglass ride to be the head of the pack. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 9
The Simeone Museum…
A car enthusiast must-visit destination
This and That
As the 2016 car show season opened, members of many area car clubs found automotive fun at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum located in the heart of Philadelphia. Having opened its doors to the public in June 2008, it is, without a doubt, one of the finest collection of automobiles in the world. Cars from races at LeMans to some absolutely awesome examples from Watkins Glen (1950 Allard J2 and the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport) as well as Bonneville racers are on display. There are cars from nearly every genre of automobile history. In addition, if racing is not at the top of your list, you will find the actual car used in the movie Rain Man. Yes the original 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible that the character Charlie Babbitt’s father left to his son. Take a virtual tour (simeonemuseum.org) and you’ll get a glimpse of the automobiles you can see at the museum. And as the season unfolds, take the opportunity to visit the Simeone museum. You’ll be glad you did.
The next time you go to a car event, please take the time to see how car owners occasionally embellish their cars. Some guys and gals just need to add that extra item on, in, or even near their car to make them a bit more personalized. The neat thing about the decorations that are placed on a ride is that you never know what you are going to see. I’ve seen things ranging from fake hairy spiders to plastic crows embellishing vehicles. These little touches are all part of the fun of enjoying the rolling eye candy at cruises and shows. Next time you take out your own ride, maybe you will want to add that something special to display on or near your car that makes it a bit different than the rest.

Spring Boardwalk Classic Car Show
The lure of the Jersey shore is a very strong incentive for a classic car owner to get out their ride and attend a car show. That’s just what happened this past Mother’s Day weekend in Wildwood, N.J. where this Jersey shore town played host to the “Spring Boardwalk Classic Car Show,” now in its 20th year. This two-day event brought hundreds of rides from New Jersey and several surrounding states. There is something about the Jersey shore that is a magnet for car guys and gals to travel and enjoy the salt air, boardwalk fun and food, and above all, the camaraderie of fellow car enthusiasts. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Show season is well under way and there have been many great events already with even more shows and cruises on the way. Please stay in touch with all the listings in this paper as well as cliffscalendar.com and the show-finder flier. I’ve always talked about the many events that are hosted every night of the week and even more on the weekends. Have you ever stopped and wondered how many clubs, groups, organizations, cities, etc., are out there planning these events? I know of at least 25 car clubs in the local South Jersey area alone, maybe 10 or so cities who run annual or monthly events, at least 20 different schools – then you have your Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches, auto part stores, and even Home Depot that gets into the mix. How about that big junkyard show at the end of every year known as the Pumpkin Run, or that huge Cruise Down Memory Lane event in Vineland? And who can forget Merchantville? What draws car owners to particular shows or cruises? What attracts you to attend this event and not another? Aside from cruises, most shows involving trophies charge a fee which in some cases can get expensive. Remember, these events are a production as I discussed in my last article, and there are associated costs. So, I ask again, what draws certain car owners to attend certain shows or cruises? Take the Pumpkin Run. There is a charge, no trophies, no door prizes, no givea-way items, but yet on any given year, the event will welcome at least 1,500 cars. Or Cruise Down Memory Lane – no charge, no trophies, no give-a-ways – but you actually do cruise the avenue like the old days. There are at least 1,200 cars there. Many free cruises will struggle to get 50 cars at times. Let’s face it, what happens at most events you attend? You park, open up the trunk, take your chair out, find a shade tree, eat and talk to your friends you saw at last week’s show. I suppose that my point here is that the venue makes all the difference because frankly, there are so many events of the same caliber that it gets to be stale after a while. I know our club tries to offer great food and music, present many quality door prizes and give-a-ways, hand out trophies at a free cruise as well as shows but sometimes I get the feeling that we need something more. I believe you the car owner should check out all the show and cruise dates, then your calendar is marked with your favorite events you want to attend. Looking at the history of established events helps many shows continue on, year after year. I can’t speak for all the clubs and organizations out there, but I would like some opinions from you car owners as to what you are looking for at an event. What attracts you to a particular event? Is there something different that we as a club or organization can be doing to make the event better? I would love to hear some new ideas on how to make a show or cruise stand out from the others. If you see me at an event, let me know what you think, or just email me at bn67fairlane@gmail.com with your comments. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun. Let’s all remember that. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

n a cold and rainy day, what am going to be doing? I’m going to a car show. But one in particular is not your ordinary car show. It’s a nostalgic event called the “Big Mother Flying Car Show.” This traditional show is held at the Flying W Air Port in Medford, N.J. It’s one of those shows you don’t want to miss even in the rain. You can park your ride, get out of the raindrops and walk right up to a large pavilion and enjoy the world of rockabilly. For those who are 18 years or older, there is also a burlesque show – all done in a mature manner. The performers wear some amazing costumes, and the ladies take you back to a classier time in teasing entertainment. Some performers like Betty Starry sing to old time jazz while performing. The stockings with the back seams, glitter and pasties are in good R-rated taste. In between performances you could dodge the rain drops and visit the vendors, browse the swap meet, enjoy the food and check out pin-up clothing and just “walk back into time.” The pin-up gals had their time strutting their stuff in a pin-up pageant. This pageant was hosted by Renee DiDio, owner of Slap Stick, which is a vintage shop in New York City. The ladies had their chance to show off their ‘50s era dresses, hairdos and winged eyeliner. Their talent shone through from modeling on stage to even singing and talking in German. By the way, the crown went to Natalie Von Tiki. To end the day, you could rock to two great rockabilly bands: Full Blown Cherry and Koffin Kats. Special thanks to event organizers Betty Barbagallo and Barry Lumbersquach for giving proceeds from the show to the No Dog Left Behind organization that provides financial support to reunite soldiers with the dogs they bonded with while on military duty. I look forward to the next show. Got some new outfits…this gal can’t wait.

Snap Shots I always enjoy looking at the various rides that participate at car shows and cruises. Every one of these vehicles is a blank canvas for their owners to display their talents and tastes. Here are a few photos of these cool cars for your enjoyment. Every car is always a unique piece eye candy. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 14
Reflections of a Car Enthusiast DJ
fter WW II, the GIs returned home looking for adventure and something different. In my humble opinion this is the start of hot rods as we know it. It was also the start of rock and roll. It’s a marriage that has lasted to this day. No marriage counselors needed – it was perfect. Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats cemented the hot rod/rock and roll marriage with the tune “Rocket 88” (Oldsmobile enthusiasts know this car model). Songster Commander Cody with the Lost Planet Airmen sang about a father talking to his son about driving too fast and causing him to drink those quarts of brew. Car clubs soon popped up. I lived in the city in Southwest Philly and the clubs close to me were the Satan’s Chauffeurs and the Cam Busters. Members did what they could with parts. Hot Rod dudes always knew where to get parts and motors from somewhere whether those parts were a block, a set of heads, a tranny, a carb or a distributor. Resourceful is what they were. Everyone did their own work. The car guys knew what made them run. No one paid to have the work done. But you passed the knowledge you had to someone who needed it. The hobby was in its infancy like the music was. Johnny Cash with One Piece at a Time summed the hobby up well. Recording artists even had songs for those car guys who hung out at hoagie shops, hamburger joints, diners and gas stations. There was always a jukebox blaring out Chuck Berry, the Playmates, Ramblin Johnny Dolan, Johnny Johnson or Big Boy Groves. That great Doo Wop sound was growing like the car hobby. The ladies liked that. What a perfect marriage, hot rods and music. When out cruising on Saturday night you had to have a radio playing that would be sending the tunes into the air. You’d go cruising in a freshly-cleaned car with cool music blaring. If the music wasn’t just right when you pulled over to talk to a honeybunch she may just walk away and the chance of giving her a ride to nowhere vanished into the air. The Harptones, 5 Satins, Lee Andrews, The Chimes, to mention a few, were needed when you pulled over on Lovers Lane. I cannot leave out those passion pits or the local drive-in. They all went together. When you dropped your sweetheart off at home, you headed to the area where you show what was purring under your hood. Ronny and the Daytonas, Jan & Dean and Beach Boy tunes come to mind. The fun lasted until the police showed up. Everyone scurried. I remember plenty of times they would block off the street, take your license and you had to retrieve things at the station. Might have dampened the street racing but the music played on. The car movies like Hollywood Nights and American Graffiti summed it up well. I watch the TV show Cuban Chrome and the show takes me back to simpler times hunting for parts and guys doing all their own work. All of this to the beat of the great music of the times. Happy motoring, Uncle Al WVLT Cruisin’ 92.1 Al Snyder is the host of “Uncle Al’s Music Warehouse” on oldies station Cruisin’ 92.1 FM every Friday night at 11 p.m. and is a certifiable car show DJ and car guy with his 1995 Vette.

CRUISING 101 Hi Gang, Well spring came, left, came back; how can we trust a rodent? But don’t worry, summer’s coming, we hope. After attending a few events, I came across a small problem that most show runners don’t think about and neither did I. My vehicle is just shy of 23 ft. long, and much like the Qe’2, doesn’t make those sharp turns. Luckily there are some of my friends with similar long cars. If Mother Nature gets her act together hopefully we will have a good summer show season, gang. I’ve got a question for all of you: is it just me getting old, or does it seem strange to see Buick Century and Chevy Cavaliers as classic cars? I understand “specialty vehicles,” like the Mercury Marauder, and a few others. But let’s get real. Summer’s coming, and we’ve got more shows covering a larger area than ever. I have to thank George Rust, from Millsboro, Del., for sending in a lot of the flyers I had not received, and I also must thank those of you on Facebook who shared show info. Keep it coming. You know, with nicer weather, you may want to depart from your backyard and see what others have to offer out there. There is nothing wrong with staying close to home, jobs and kids, but I suggest heading out on the weekends and see a new neighborhood, meet new friends, tell old stories to new listeners. I see a lot of my fellow Jerseyians traveling one to two hours to shows in the state. There are bridges just to the west, not too high, that will open a whole new world of shows to you, if you go with or without your ride is up to you. Show the brain new things, improve events here at home, get some new thoughts. And that goes for everyone. I will make a prediction now, with the cool, damp spring: I’m thinking summer is going to be a cooker. Avoid parking lot shows in July and August – the asphalt just gets too hot. Freeze a couple bottles of water before you attend a show, that way you don’t have to buy messy ice for your coolers. Looking forward to seeing you at the shows along with my Flower Car.

T
he weather during the first few weekends of show season in April was a conglomeration of mild, windy, rainy, snowy and cold. For the people who had car events planned for that time, it was a heck of a kick in the pants on their plans.
I did read that two event promoters chose to take a chance on the skies opening up and
they made their event a “go.” Their logic, as I saw on social media, was that it’s about fun, and threatening weather that may just get better was not going to hurt their fun. This made me do some soul-searching and I soon realized that car events have several components to them. They are to get car guys and gals together and possibly have a charity to support or just have an outing. More importantly, it’s the spirit of the hobby. That is what many clubs and car promoters have in mind. The spirit of the hobby is the one thing that we sometimes do not reflect upon enough. Sure, it’s fun to hop into the ride and partake at a cruise or show, but it’s also about enjoying the hobby. The goal of having fun is important because it keeps people coming back to a given event. How many times have you made a certain event a must-go? If you get down to the nitty gritty of why this event is a must-go, I’ll bet it’s about the spirit of the event. That spirit is what gives you the good vibes. A real life example of the spirit of a car event happened to me about 17 years ago when I was putting on an all-Camaro show. I put months of preparation and hard work into this activity. I wanted it to really work and be a good time for all. Well, the weekend of the show was a rain-out and I resorted to plan “B,” which was the rain date. I recall the rain date had an iffy overcast. I made the call to do the show. In the gray of the day, I could see my fellow

I gave the trophies early to the participants at award time. By 12:30 p.m. it was raining like heck. But I found out, after conversations over the next months, that the rain did not wash away the spirit of the show. So to all of you who put on a multi-faceted car gathering, I’ll bet it’s safe to say that one goal that, many times, is seldom discussed but always present is the “spirit” of the event.
