A Man and His Superbird Why one older gentleman kept a decaying ride parked in front of his house for years By Frank Adkins

I

t was an ordinary day at work late in 1991. I was a 26-year-old flat-rate mechanic working in a Dodge dealership, but I was firmly rooted in the automotive hobby as well. At home I had just put the finishing touches on the three-and-a-half car garage that I’d built over the previous eight months to house my ’68 Dart GT, ’68 Dart GTS convertible, and ’67 Belvedere. As lunchtime approached, the Snap-On man arrived and handed me several outdated calendars. He said, “I found these over the weekend. They aren’t much good as calendars anymore, but they have some really cool car pictures that I thought you’d appreciate.” I thanked him and laid them on the side cabinet of my toolbox. The January photograph of the top calendar happened to be of a white Plymouth Superbird. Sometime later that morning Larry, the mechanic who worked in the next bay, wandered over and spotted the Superbird. Larry was my age, but he was from the Bahamas. Although he was aware of American muscle cars, he didn’t grow up in the car culture the way many of us did. He and I were good friends, although we talked a lot of smack and routinely played jokes on each other. He said, “Look at that big ugly car! That thing is so big you could live in it!” He continued his rant peppered with insults and expletives, eventually mentioning, “I know where there’s one like that.” I was certain he was either mistaken or he was spinning this yarn for his own amusement, 6

but he insisted. I asked if the car he was talking about had the tall rear wing and the pointed nose. He said it did. I called his bluff. He said, “I’m serious!” I still had doubts, but Larry insisted. He agreed to take me to the car. Unfortunately, we both worked second jobs and we couldn’t coordinate our schedules. After two weeks of trying, I asked him to give me directions. The following Saturday afternoon I drove to a neglected neighborhood near Wilmington, Del. I thought, No way is there a Superbird here. Larry got me good this time! Just then I rounded a bend in the narrow street, and there, parked at the curb half a block away, was a derelict white Superbird. Its damaged nose had been troweled full of body filler, its headlights were stuck open, its vinyl top had been slashed, and it had other minor damage, but it was the car Larry had promised I’d find. I parked my truck across the street and circled the ‘Bird, peering underneath. The oil pan was badly dented, but the Dana 60 rear axle was in place, the black bucket seat interior was reasonably intact, and the factory Pistol Grip shifter stretched upward from the floor. The Superbird-specific windshield and rear window moldings were also in place. A current registration sticker was affixed to the corner of the vanity tag that read “BUCK.” I could barely contain my excitement as I scurried up the walkway and knocked on the door of the single-story home amid a row of identical connected houses. After

a few minutes of knocking, the man in the adjacent home opened his door. He eyed me for a moment, apparently concluding that I did not belong in that neighborhood. “You’re here about the car, aren’t you?” I nodded. He said, “Don’t waste your time. Lots of people have tried to buy that car, but the old guy will never sell it. He’s home, but he’s almost deaf. He can’t hear you knocking.” I thanked him and headed for my truck intending to write a note and leave it on the windshield. For some reason I peered under the front of the car again, only to hear angry shouts from behind me. I stood and turned to see an elderly gentleman moving toward me slowly and stiffly, presumably due to advanced arthritis. He wore a shirt and pants that had gone out of style decades earlier, and his gray hair had been stained yellow by Bryl Crème. I quickly apologized. I explained that I had knocked on his door, but he hadn’t answered, and that I was only looking at his car. He calmed down quickly and said he thought I might be stealing parts from it. I assured him that was not the case. I expressed my love of Superbirds. I also mentioned the cars I owned, and that led him to tell me about his car. As I recall, his name was George. He and his wife had bought their home many decades earlier when this neighborhood had been a quaint community full of friendly neighbors, most of whom were raising children. George worked for the DuPont Corporation as either an engineer or a chemist. He had been a NASCAR fan from its earliest days when it was known as Grand National racing, and he had followed the technical advances spawned by the competition between manufacturers as the years progressed. He was especially interested in the aerodynamic developments of the late 1960s, which ultimately led to the creation of the Dodge Charger Daytona in 1969 and the Plymouth Road Runner Superbird the following year. In order to homologate the Superbird for racing in NASCAR, Chrysler Corporation was required to build two Superbirds for every dealer, which equated to 1920 cars. It is common knowledge that, although they were very competitive on the racetrack, Superbirds were not well-received by the public due to their outlandish styling and high cost. Many languished on dealer lots for years. George, however, was determined to own a Superbird even before they were released to the public. “I knew what it was. I had researched them, and I wanted one.” Although they both loved children, George and his wife never had any of their own. Instead, they befriended the kids in their neighborhood. Of course, the Superbird was a hit with them. “Sometimes on a Saturday afternoon we would load up as many kids as we could fit in the car and take them out for ice cream. The kids loved riding up and down New Castle Avenue, and they really liked it whenever somebody wanted to pick a race with me.” As we talked, he explained that the word BUCK on his license plate was actually his nickname, which had been derived from his last name. I don’t remember how, but our conversation eventually strayed from the car to times earlier in George’s life, including his service during World War II. He related several noteworthy as well as some funny incidents from those days. As he talked, it seemed that he gradually stood a little bit straighter and his voice took on a more robust, less gravelly tone. Despite the arthritis, his hand gestures also became more fluid as the years melted away. When talk of the car resumed, George said that his wife had become ill in the ‘70s, and that he had retired so that he could care for her. His nephew had been using the Superbird during that time, and one morning while rounding an off-ramp on I-295 he hit a patch of ice and punched the nose into a guardrail. He spoke in a matter-of-fact tone. Even if he had been angry with his nephew at the time, he was over it now.

As George spoke I couldn’t help thinking, In the context of today’s world, he has no idea what he’s got. I suspected that he thought the Superbird was now a nearlyforgotten anecdote in the annals of automotive history. On the contrary, by the early ‘90s it had become a highly collectible car, and one that I would have loved to have had in my own garage. The first wave of the muscle car craze had washed over the hobby in the late ‘80s. At that time, a year after the Gulf War had begun, muscle car prices were up significantly from where they had been five years earlier, and high profile cars like Superbirds were riding the crest of that wave. I was shocked that this car was sitting outdoors on a crowded urban street and that George trusted all who drove past to remain attentive enough not to accidentally side-swipe it. I realized that to George, his Superbird represented over 20 years of his life and the final years that he had spent with his wife. It was a reminder of the last of the happy times they had shared—a token that he would cling to indefinitely. I doubted if any of the kids, now grown, who had gone for ice cream in the big white ‘Bird still stopped around to see him, but I don’t think it mattered. The car spurred his memories of those times, and that was enough. I believed that he was oblivious to the collector car community’s newfound infatuation with Chrysler’s winged cars. Furthermore, I believed it wouldn’t have mattered to him if he had known the public’s opinion had done an about-face and that the onceshunned Superbird was now a highly sought collector car. Then George uttered a sentence that destroyed my foregone conclusions: “I have everything to restore this car.” Sensing my disbelief he said, “I have a new nose. I have quarter panels. I even have all of the upholstery and a new vinyl top.” My mouth fell open. “That stuff is from Legendary. I assume you’ve heard of them?” Indeed, I had. Legendary Auto Interiors was a relatively new company that offered high quality reproduction soft trim, and already I had spent hundreds of dollars with them. George continued, “I joined the Winged Warriors car club several years ago, and they helped me find a lot of what I need.” I knew that the Winged Warriors club was comprised of Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Superbird owners. Before I could ask, he volunteered, “The only reason I haven’t restored it is because I don’t know who I can trust to do the work.” He also explained that he preferred to park it in front of his home where he could keep an eye on it rather than store it in a rented garage where it might lie at the mercy of thieves and vandals. “I wouldn’t know if anything happened to it until it was too late.” Looking at it from his perspective, and thinking of how he had taken alarm when I had peered under it, I understood. I asked him if he would ever consider selling it, to which he replied, “No. I’d like to restore it and give it to my nephew. But I’ll never sell it.” For the next year or two I drove by from time to time, and eventually George moved the Superbird inside the fence that surrounded his yard. His second car, a Corvair, continued to sit on the street. Then one day I saw that both cars were gone and the meager contents of George’s home had been moved to the front yard. I concluded that he had passed on. Five years later, I heard a rumor from an unreliable source that George’s nephew had inherited his Superbird and all of its parts. Seeing only dollar signs, he had sold off everything as fast as he could to numerous buyers. More recently I heard from another source that the car and all of its parts had been tucked away, and that its restoration might soon get underway. In either case, I’m sure it will be restored eventually if it hasn’t been already. I only hope that its history isn’t lost in the process, and that George’s memory is preserved and remains linked to his ‘Bird. The history of the car and the story of George’s life are truly one and the same. 7

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Brews ‘N Cruise

Save the Dance

There is something about a cold, frosty brew that lifts the spirits on a breezy spring day. Now couple that spirit of micro-brewed ale with a benefit car cruise open to all cars and cycles, and you have the makings of a really pleasant and fun event. The Glasstown Brewery, located at the airport in scenic Millville, N.J., teamed up with the South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Group to have a cruise that was to benefit a four-month-old girl afflicted with blood cancer. By the time the event was over, a generous donation was acquired to give to the parents to help pay for growing medical costs. Besides a large selection of brews, there was food and music and several other great sights at the airport. As usual, the cruising community came through to help someone and also got to enjoy the gift of sharing a great afternoon.

Downe Township is a friendly, small community where everyone seems to know each other. It’s a rural area that has deep roots in supporting local functions. So not surprisingly, the Downe Township Elementary School decided to hold an inaugural car show to raise funds for the eighth grade class. This group of approximately 18 students, along with the Parent and Teachers Organization, staged a car show in early April to raise funds for the student dance. As we all know, first-time events can be real nail biters for attendance. Well, the members of the car community did not disappoint the students and came out, with more than 100 attendees, for a nice first-time show. Our motorcycle enthusiast friends supported the show, too, and vendors, crafters, DJ music and plenty of food made it a great day for all.

A Day for ‘Stangs’

A Fun Tradition

The Ford Mustang was introduced April, 1964. This was intended to be Ford’s car of the future. Like all automotive designs it was a gamble on consumer acceptance. The idea of an affordable sports car was a new concept in Detroit back in the day. So, how successful was the first year of the new “Stang”? Well, over 400,000 units sold in the first run and the party hasn’t stopped in 60 years. Mustang owners are fiercely loyal to their rides, so having a day set aside for their cars is only natural. The South Jersey Mustang Club teamed up with a local cruising club Wheels of Thunder to celebrate national Mustang Appreciation Day at the Walmart lot in Bridgeton, N.J. There were plenty of Mustangs and Fords on hand to enjoy their special day and a special commemorative sticker for those in attendance.

Hammonton, N.J., is home to another one of the great car clubs that hails from the southern portion of the state. The members of the Crusin’ Classics Auto Club stage multiple events throughout the year and they contribute to many worthwhile charities in the area. The club has teamed up with the local Hammonton NAPA Auto parts store for their annual Spring Charity Car Show. This show draws nearly 200 rides of all makes and persuasions from the surrounding area to raise funds for the local food banks. The club’s spring show has all the good things that one would expect from a wellplanned event and even has an incentive of a free gift to those who bring a child to the show. That’s a neat way to get the next generation interested in the cruising and car show hobby. If you missed this event you will be happy to know that the next one is going to be taking place in October. You’ll get all of that information right here in the upcoming issues of Cruising Magazine.

Double the Fun with Wheels & Wings

Spring! That word is a cruising car guy and gal’s call to get ready for the season of gatherings at shows and cruises. Clubs enjoy starting the season with events that bring out the cruising faithful. One such group is the Wheels of Thunder Car Club. The good members of the club welcome spring in mid-April with a cruise at the Walmart lot in Bridgeton, N.J. There were nearly 200 rides coming out to welcome the season in this event and the Wheels of Thunder crew also teamed up with the South Jersey Mustang Club to cohost a Mustang day activity. You know it’s that time of the year when the birds sing, the flowers bloom and the cruisers get together at car events. Check out wheelsofthunder.org for more information.

Feel the thunder of powerful jets, military aircraft and warbirds; see exciting aerobatics and formation flying, and enjoy ground displays, vendors, a visit to the museum, and lots of food. Hundreds of classic show cars along with modern muscle vehicles are featured at the Memorial Day Weekend show. The two-day event takes place daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature the United States Navy Blue Angels jet demonstration team. The car show is hosted by the South Jersey Cruisers Association. Old School Photos and Rides Go to a car show, cruise, race or just about anywhere that cool rides gather, and you have the perfect setting for photographs. At a recent car cruise I brought along my trusty original Imperial camera and asked the cruisers to smile with an old school piece of photographic equipment next to some old rides. THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey Gang,

THE CAR CLINIC “Where you are treated like a patient, not a victim”

302.421.9100 | 59 Germay Dr. | Wilmington, DE 19804

The shows and cruises are rolling now, so get out and enjoy these wonderful events. Check out this issue for all the hot shows going on in your area. Can you believe it’s June already? How fast the time goes by especially when you are doing something that you really enjoy. It seems as though you wait forever for a particular event, then when it gets here it’s over in a flash – what’s up with that? Time seems to be moving very fast and many of our fellow car guys seem to be leaving us all too soon. I need to express our sympathies once again to Rita and Fred Polhamus on the loss of their son Tom. These are all great car people and the loss of Tom will be felt by many. Our sympathies to his wife Sandie and children as well. I wrote in my last article that Cliff Shield aka cliffscalendar.com was looking for someone to continue his work with the website. Well, as many of you already know, someone did step up to continue Cliff’s work, because there are many events already listed on that site. The gentleman’s name is Larry Troth. To date, Larry seems to be doing a great job listing all the shows and cruises. Larry tells me the transition has been smooth and a mind opening experience. He never realized how many car enthusiasts there are in the tri-state area. Larry states that his sole intention when taking over the online calendar was to keep Cliff’s legacy moving forward – that’s why it is still known as Cliff’s Calendar. He has no plans to change that. He has posted shows and cruises as far south as Ocean City, Md., to as far north as Linden, N.J., and as far west as Reading, Pa., including everything in between. Larry has asked for submissions as early as possible. Send them to info@cliffscalendar.com. If you would like to send your flier, attach it to your email as a PDF or JPEG. Naturally, with this being his first year taking over for Cliff, he realized the amount of work that Cliff put in all those years, so he will make no changes to the format. His future plans for 2018 may include club listings, more advertisers, sponsors and so on. Larry also tells me he would like to possibly attend some local car club meetings to introduce himself. Once again I have to give kudos where kudos are due. Larry jumped into this deal with both feet and never looked back. Knowing Cliff, I’m sure he’s very proud that Larry stepped up to continue his work, as I am sure the car guys and gals are as well. Actually, Larry is no stranger to the car scene. He does all kinds of wiring jobs on classics, street rods and antique cars and trucks. Anyone out there looking for a complete wiring job or just repairs to your wiring contact Larry. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about having “FUN” “FUN” “FUN” like those Beach Boys said. Remember that.

I recently took a cruise with fellow car guys and gals to Wildwood, N.J. This is really the Doo-wop capital of the world. As we drove through the island, the motels, diners and even the Wawa gas station had a Doo-wop theme. The main drag had brick sidewalks with a nostalgic blue wave design on it. If that was not cool enough there was a huge “welcome to Wildwood” sign that greets visitors with large decorative beach balls. You must check it out and get a picture of it. As we continued to cruise we saw this extremely cool building with a large neon sign out front featuring some palm trees, too. This very special building is called the Doo Wop Museum. We decided to park all of our cars in front of the museum and take a walk in to see what this place was all about. As we walked through the front door we were greeted by Shirley Cruz who is a volunteer and the right-hand woman to museum president Dan MacElrevey. Shirley gave us a lot of information about the museum during our visit. As we looked around we saw vintage pieces from living room sets to a classic art deco kitchen. There was even an old section of the Wildwood boardwalk. The Doo Wop Museum is a nonprofit organization and support from donations keeps it going. I must give a special thanks to Dan MacElrevey for letting us check the place out. For more information check out doowopusa.org or call 609-523-1958 and speak to Shirley.

CRUISING 101 Hi Gang, Is summer here yet? Everyone knows I love the heat. Anything below 70 degrees is freezing. I like green leaves, flowers and car shows. Just keep an ice chest nearby with plenty of cold water. At shows, if you’re sitting by your ride, check out the crowd and if you see someone pale and sweating – offer water. In the last issue I discussed the new muscle cars and imports and the need for new classes to help build some clubs by bringing in new blood. Not that clubs look like an AARP meeting, but you know what I mean. New blood, new ideas. Also, judging can sometimes seem unfair, and often there can be conflicts arising amid the hectic flutter of event days. If you are at an event and you discover something unfortunate, tell one of the show staffers – most of us know someone at any show we go to, so it’s not hard to find a staffer. Better talking about your problem that just “letting it stew.” As I said, it’s summer, which means there is basically a show every day, so there is plenty to pick and choose from. Since the same-old sameold gets boring, go outside the box. See what’s on the other side of the bridge. New people to meet, new cars to compete against…If you are up to the challenge. Get out there! Let that piece of hard work see the road, but remember it’s a fun hobby. If you win, that’s good, and if you lose, then at least you tried. Good for you, because you got to spend the day with friends. It doesn’t get much better than that. See ya at the events!

here is a saying goes something like this: “Behind every great man there is a great woman.” I have always felt that to be very true in so many ways. Many of us men in the hobby are fortunate to have a supportive spouse or significant other. Let’s face it. The hobby, arguably, seems to be a male-dominated activity. But did you ever take the time to think about the support that many of us get from our better halves? I’ll take myself for example. I have two cars that I have had for many years. One is my ’63 Vette that I purchased in 1972 and the other is my ’69 Camaro that I purchased in 1995. One day I felt that it was time to refinish the Vette and like all projects, it involves money. Now my desire to keep peace in the house and my desire to get my car restored needed absolute support. We talked and agreed on how it would be completed without sacrificing things like food, mortgage, bills and so forth. It made my life easy with her support. Need I say the same held true for when the Camaro was completed? It’s also great to see many of the ladies getting involved in builds of their own cars and hearing about them assisting their better half on working their particular rides or doing their own work. Now, let’s look at leadership in car clubs. The stereotypical male president pattern is now being complemented by female presidents. I’ve had the good fortune to meet and interview several female car club chief executives. Kudos to the ladies. Some of the car events are now being chaired and run by ladies in the hobby, too. It’s good to see new ideas and direction from these individuals. So let’s paraphrase that old adage that I started off with. How about we change that phrase, too? Let’s make it: “Next to every great car guy, there is a great car gal.” Department of Education 101: Mary Anderson was granted a patent for the windshield wiper in 1903. Department of Education 102: Florence Lawrence invented the turn signal and brake light in 1913.
