BUYING IN THE DIGITAL AGE Cars and parts are often now just a click away By Frank Adkins

t was the late 1970s and I was entering my teens. A few of my friends had dirt bikes, but my parents wouldn’t allow me to have one. My mother was an operating room nurse who worked second shift on weekends in a busy hospital. Through the years she had helped to treat hundreds of motorcycle accident victims, and she regularly asserted that there was no way her son would have a motorcycle. I knew that convincing them to let me purchase anything propelled by an internal combustion engine would be a tough sell, but when I was 13 they relented to my incessant begging and permitted me to buy a used go-kart. That particular go-kart belonged to a kid maned Eddie who lived up the street, and he only wanted $35 for it. Of course, I neglected to mention to my parents that he had completely disassembled it. On the day when I had finally amassed the cash, Eddie made

three trips to my house to deliver all of the pieces. When my father saw not a go-kart, but rather, the pile of parts that I had actually purchased—a frame and boxes containing an engine bock, piston, crankshaft, carburetor, and other essentials—he frowned and said, “Looks like you bought a real piece of (crap)!” Three days later I had it running and drivable, save for the front tires and tubes which were missing. Of course, before Eddie had disassembled it, he had abused it mercilessly. Having run it nearly out of oil several times and having repeatedly used the choke to bog the engine long enough to jump aboard after push-starting it (he had locked the failed centrifugal clutch with a bolt, so pull-starting it was out of the question), the cylinder wall was badly scored. Eventually the little three horsepower Briggs and Stratton lost all compression.

Thus began my search for a replacement engine. In those days there were only two options for classifieds in my area, The News Journal newspaper and the Swapper, a weekly publication of classified ads printed in Newark, Del. Week after week I scoured the classifieds for suitable engines in my price range. Due to my speed lust, I always drove the go-kart just as hard I could. Furthermore, on any replacement engine, I immediately disabled the governor. Consequently, I became quite adept at rebuilding small engines, and I completely destroyed four of them over the next two years. Yes, I read the Swapper often! When I was 15, I sold both the go-kart and one of my home-built bicycles in order to purchase my first car. It was a ’64 Dodge Dart with an ailing automatic transmission. I decided to replace the automatic transmission with a manual gearbox. My buddy Mike had replaced the clutch in his father’s Ford Pinto station wagon, so I was certain that he knew all there was to know about clutches and manual transmissions. He was a few months older than me, and when he turned 16 we visited junkyards in search of the parts I’d need to make my conversion. Soon I traded the money I’d earned delivering newspapers and cutting grass for said parts. For a transmission, once again I turned to the Swapper. I purchased a three-speed floor-shifted transmission and shifter from somebody who was parting out a Plymouth Duster in an apartment complex north of Wilmington, Del. (The apartment manager and other residents probably weren’t thrilled, but that didn’t concern me.) On the way home, the transmission rolled in the back of my parents’ station wagon and spilled hypoid gear oil into the carpet. For years afterward the family wagon stunk on hot days. The bearings in that transmission turned out to be worn and noisy (buyer beware!), but it held me over until I could afford to buy another one from a late model Dodge Aspen wreck in a junkyard. In those days, finding cars and parts was both time consuming and labor intensive. It was also localized. When searching for parts, the classifieds were good only if the seller deemed the part in question valuable enough to warrant a listing. Word of mouth and junkyards were the only other options. Of course, it was possible to call various junkyards in an effort to save time, but such parts inquiries usually netted the response, “We probably have it. Come in and take a look.” Finding cars was equally difficult. People in the market for cool cars would scour ads in all of their local publications (most of which included, at best, one grainy image on newspaper print), keep their ears open for any line on such a car, and keep their eyes peeled for “For Sale” signs taped into the side windows of the cars they encountered in their travels. Entire weekends would be devoted to the quest! Folks selling a car or parts would place ads in a local classified paper, answer numerous phone calls, and sacrifice nights and weekends in hopes that the people who said they were coming would actually show up. It often took weeks or even months for buyers and sellers to come together, if they ever did at all. One major limitation of the local classifieds was that they were just that—local. Generally, each publication served area with a radius of fifty or so miles. If you wanted to expand your search, you had to drive to another area and purchase their publications. It would be another couple of years before my friend’s father, Jack, would introduce me to the national publication Hemmings Motor News. Although I enjoyed reading his back issues, I soon discovered that Hemmings catered to serious car collectors, not regular guys like me who were struggling just to keep their junk running. Furthermore, “regular” people looking to sell their decade-old cars didn’t advertise in Hemmings. Jack also introduced me to the regional swap meets in Carlisle, Hershey, and Macungie, Pa., as well as Atlantic City, N.J. I seized every opportunity to blow whatever spare cash I could muster on car parts and tools. Although I scored many items that I would have never obtained otherwise, finding what I actually needed and for a fair price was very hit-and-miss. By the early ‘90s, some late night television shows highlighting the inventory of various used car lots began to appear on local cable channels. While these shows could save a lot of time and legwork for insomniacs looking for a deals on cars at Buy-Here-PayHere lots, they did little to bring the vast majority of car buyers and sellers together.

Things remained largely unchanged until later in the ‘90s when the Internet came into widespread use. Arguably, it was eBay.com that revolutionized the way vehicles and used parts change hands. Overnight it became possible to quickly scour hundreds of ads from sellers across the country or around the world. Color photos highlighting attributes and revealing blemishes of goods minimized the guesswork associated with traditional print ads. eBay’s auction format added to the excitement of scoring that elusive car or part, but if the seller opted for Buy It Now pricing, that car or part could be yours immediately and with just a few mouse clicks. Suddenly there was no more playing phone tag, getting directions, or waiting for people who would never show up. As I soon discovered, eBay gave those of us in the rust belt access to cars, clean sheet metal, and trim pieces from dry climates elsewhere in the country. In fact, if not for eBay, I could not have completed many of the projects I have built over the last 20 years. Craigslist.org has proven to be something of a cross between eBay and the old print classifieds. The ads are accessible from anywhere in the world, but search areas are localized. Electronic ads and color photos provide far greater timeliness and information than the print ads, but the local scope can actually be a benefit when selling or buying items that are cost prohibitive to ship. Recently I sold a project car via Craigslist. I chose Craigslist over eBay because of its local scope. I wanted the buyer to see the car in person before completing the purchase because I wanted him to know exactly what he was getting. In addition, over the last two months I have purchased three Dodge Dakota project/parts trucks from Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. I found them all on Craigslist, and I completed the transactions in person. Numerous online clubs comprised of owners and enthusiasts of specific car makes and types have sprung up. Cars and parts change hands regularly thanks to connections made through these clubs. More recently, social media has gained widespread acceptance as a means of finding and selling cars and parts in much the same format as the online clubs, but without the expense of maintaining a website. Facebook has numerous such groups. Of course, now days nearly every classic car dealer, restoration parts warehouse, and used parts supplier has a website. Folks regularly share ads from these and other sources on social media. Although the Barrett-Jackson auctions began in 1971, they were not televised until the SPEED channel did so in 1995. This auction is regarded as the pinnacle of the collector car world where big dollar cars and big dollar buyers come together. The Mecum auctions got underway in 1988, but they remained overshadowed by Barrett-Jackson until recent years. Mecum now hosts the largest collector car auction in the world annually in Kissimmee, FL. Over an eight day period, 3,000 cars cross the auction block. Today, many enthusiasts regard visits to both auctions as bucket list events. Recently, my friend Lou Sitaras drove his ’85 Cadillac from his home in Pennsylvania to the Mecum auction in Florida. A coastal storm left snowy, icy roads in the Carolinas, and he was forced to make an unplanned overnight stay in a roadside motel. When he arrived at Mecum, he was treated like royalty. The crew promptly cleaned his Caddy and had it looking its best. Lou chronicled his adventure on Facebook, and he posted numerous pictures of many of the other interesting cars that were present. Although we take such activities for granted today, they were unheard of just a few years ago. He also had several phone conversations with Amy, a close friend and fellow car enthusiast a thousand miles away in western New York. They exchanged texts, photos, and videos while Lou walked about the rows of cars to be auctioned. When Lou’s car crossed the block, Amy was in contact with him in real time while watching his reactions on live TV. By the time the event was concluded, Lou’s Cadillac had found a new owner and he was on his way home in a retired police package Dodge Charger. The impacts of technology-based communication on our lives cannot be overstated, but nowhere are they better exemplified than in the world of automotive enthusiasts.

Wheels of Thunder Springtime Cruise

Downe Township Car Show

Spring! That word is a cruising car guy and gals’ call to get ready for the season of gatherings at car shows and cruises. And what better way to usher in spring than with a car cruise? One such group is the Wheels of Thunder Car Club. The fine members of the club welcome spring in midApril with a cruise at the Walmart lot in Bridgeton, N.J. There were many fine rides of all types coming out to welcome the season. It was also one of those days Mother Nature offered the cruisers perfect weather to enjoy. You know it’s that time of the year when the birds sing, the flowers bloom and the cruisers assemble at car events.

Beautiful spring days are meant for car shows. Therefore, on a really pleasant day in April, the Downe Township School Board held its second annual Downe Township Afterglow Car Show Extravaganza. The show was held at the township elementary school where there was ample space for the variety of cars that participated. The show had activities for the very young and a flea market for the members of the town to participate in. Proceeds from this event were used toward activities for the eighth grade class. Downe Township is a small community that is nestled in the heart of rural southern New Jersey. How small of a town? Well, there are 18 students in the eighth grade class. These students are very fortunate to have a successful car show and supportive community that joined in a fun day for a great cause.

Brews and Cruise ‘18 During World War II, the United Stated needed locations throughout the country to train pilots. One location was in the town of Millville, N.J. This location became known as America’s First Defense Airport. Today, the airport has a museum dedicated to the preservation of the memory of those who served there during that period in our history. Like many small museums, this one relies on the generosity of donations to keep its doors open. Therefore the members of the South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Group teamed together with the Glasstown Brewery to have a benefit cruise on the airport grounds. Over 120 cruisers came out on a windy spring afternoon to help raise funds for the museum. Tunes were provided by a local radio DJ and the event was organized by the members of the SJ Cruisers. At the end of the cruise, donated funds were given to the museum reps in front of the cruisers. Our hobby has the dedicated military personnel to thank for the freedoms we enjoy. The Millville Army Air Museum keeps these military members’ memories alive.

The Nostalgia Knights Car Club recently held its “Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Car Show” located at the parish center school grounds in Landisville, N.J. Church barbeques and car shows are a match made in heaven. Where else can one get a variety of food, like a delicious chicken dinner, as well as enjoy the eye candy of a car show? The 100-plus car owners who were there had a fun event at this nice location, relaxing with their rides on a cool Sunday.

How do like your Jeeps? Mild, mean, off-road ready, super ticked-out? There is a sports bar located in Pittsgrove Township, N.J., that hosts an event that will satisfy your Jeep cravings. The Steakout restaurant and sports bar Jeep show catered to every taste. You could feel the camaraderie of this America legend vehicle with the way the participants congregated around their rides. Yours truly pulled into the lot and was quickly greeted by the sight of a great array of serious off-road Jeeps. This make of vehicle is an American icon that is the stuff of legends in the automobile world. The Jeep served us in war and serves us in peace as a cool ride that has something for everyone.

Go to just about any car show or cruise and you will see a symbol of our country proudly displayed on some cars. The American flag is as much of a statement on a person’s ride as is the ride itself. Whether that car is a street rod, muscle car, or stock vehicle, that owner is telling you that he or she is driving a ride that was born in the USA. Talk to any car guy and gal and you sense their love and appreciation of a country that has allowed the classic culture to grow and flourish. Whether cruisers display the flag or not, we all know that American Iron is unique and special – and those who like to display the flag on that ride offer a great reminder.

The Next Generation Car shows are great! I was at a show at the Vineland Veterans Home last summer when I met a cool grandpop-grandson team, Philip and Nathan. Nathan, who likes to go to car shows with his grandpop, had just turned 4 years old. Philip has a 1967 Chevelle and Nathan has a blue 1957 Chevy battery-operated car. When they go to the shows, Philip puts Nathan’s car, named Little Trixie, in the trunk of Philip’s car, Trixie. It’s cool that they named their cars – and also cool because that’s my Mom’s name. Nathan takes great care of his car. He likes to wash it frequently using a blue rag that won’t wear his blue paint out. One of his favorite things to do at shows is to look at the interior and the engines of the cars. Since he’s only 4, and is a little too short to see the interior and the engines, his grandpop has to pick him up so he can look at every inch. Now he is at the age where he is asking a lot of questions about cars. This summer, enjoy every day with your family and of course, your cars. I feel as though I need to touch on a couple of subjects in this month’s column. First off, you all know that there are shows and cruises seven days a week and on weekends there are multiple events; some week nights even have multiple events. Unless you are interested in a particular event, most cruisers travel to the closest event to their home. Stands to reason in today’s world, simply because of the costs to take your ride out. The cost of gas today is your first expense, and then there are the entrance fees, and you might get hungry or thirsty, or want to purchase a 50/50 if available. Most events are there to support a charity so a donation may be in order, and the list goes on. How about those of us who travel to national events across the country? Now you’re adding hotels and meals. My point is that if many of you are wondering why car counts are low at a particular event it could be costs to attend, not to mention the multiple events your show may be up against. The other factor here is family commitments. In my eyes, most family events come first. In today’s world there are your children, grandchildren and extended family who always have some kind of party or dinner, birthday, trip, vacation and so on. Since we all want to keep living at home it makes sense to keep the peace at home before attending a show. My next issue is one that is very important to me. Many of you know that I’m the president of the Nostalgia Knights Car Club here in South Jersey. We have many free cruises during the year and host only two shows per year. We host these events for one reason and that is to raise money for our charities. We are not alone. You will find all the established clubs in the tristate area have the same mission in mind. Just as many other reputable clubs, we advertise at every show and cruise where your money is going. We want all who come to our events to know that we are huge supporters of our veterans and our special needs children at St. John of God. We also give to 20 or so other charities, ranging from food banks to cancer research programs. Now, you may ask, why am I saying all this? We donate over $12,000 each year to these charities. How many of you actually know that the money goes to who we say it does? We always have our donations published in many newspapers for all to read. In fact, our toy run last year at St. John of God was featured on NBC 10 News from Philadelphia. You should all know that it’s one thing for the hosts of your events to say where your donations are going but it’s another to find out if it actually got there. Sounds a bit harsh to think in this manner, however, we live in a very different world today. You’ve all heard the saying, “money is the root of all evil” – how true that can be. I suppose we all have the right to know that our donations make it to the proper charities, but then again I suppose we have to put trust in the hosts of the shows we attend. Food for thought…

Hi gals and guys, Car show season has finally begun after this very long, cold winter. I’m so excited for this season. I plan on doing more out of state shows. I love Jersey but it’s so much fun to visit other places, too. The car clubs have come up with so much entertainment from bands, pin-up pageants, burlesque, mustache contests, and more. Car shows are sometimes not just a one-day event. Now promoters are holding up to three-day shows. Not only that, but they are beginning to hold indoor shows. We have come a long way from the days of shows of sitting behind our cars. I love how the car clubs work so hard to raise money for favorite charities. The car community is so giving. I choose to donate to veterans, a cause very close to my heart. My father is a Vietnam vet. Throughout the car show season you can always find me posing on cars for a small donation. It all goes towards veterans. If you cannot donate, please volunteer your time. You can contact Lisa Williams at the NJ Veterans Home in Vineland via email at lisa.williams@ dmava.nj.gov. How many times have you gone to start your car, but first you go to a convenient key rack which may be situated on a handy location on the wall, or to a special drawer with a spot set aside for keys? Keys are so small and thin with a bit of fancy flare these days. But a car key back in the day usually came in two types: one for the ignition and another for the trunk or glove box. How easy and simple could you get? Right? Well, that was back then. So I ask you, have you looked at the keys for the cars of today? They are not just stamped pieces of metal that you get reproduced at the hardware store for a few dollars. They are often large, high tech and electronically sophisticated devices that cost as much as a set of aftermarket wheels to replace or duplicate. I recently broke down and purchased a new car after 14 years of driving my SUV. The SUV had a standard key with a slightly oversized plastic covered bow (according to Wikipedia, the “bow” is the part you put your fingers on to turn the key). When I had copies made, they were a few dollars and the big plastic logo piece on the bow was not needed. I asked the dealer of my new car how much a spare key would cost. The cost for my particular key was more than $300. Yes. Three hundred bucks. He even said that if it was for a certain popular Japanese car, a replacement key was $600 dollars or more. I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard this price and to top it all off, it did not look like a key. It kind of resembles a Star Wars device that has no “shoulder, cuts or tip” (these terms courtesy of Wikipedia). Of course, there are numerous buttons on the key fob that do all kinds of things from locking, unlocking, to reading your blood pressure and more. The other pain in the posterior is carrying them along with your usual keys such as your shed key, garage key, front door key, screen door key and so on. The bulge in one’s pants pocket from all of these keys along with the new Star Wars key looks like a person has some sort of weapon in their pocket. I think to myself that if this high tech key has radiation in it, my lower extremities are going to glow after a while. I can just imagine what car keys will evolve into in the next few years. They will probably weigh a pound or more and be as big as an iPad with no “bow, shoulder or tip.” Technology is fascinating and cars today are smarter than ever with the things can they do, but for heaven’s sake, can we just a have a plain old stamped metal key that a person can put on their key chain and not have to take out a loan to replace? By the way, my car key just signaled me: It’s time for my blood pressure pill. Department of Change: The Patriot’s Pride Car Show (my club event) is now a cruise at a new location.
