Weighing Modifications Against Future Value How important is originality? By Frank Adkins 6

H

ow concerned are you with the originality of your car? Do you fret over every detail to correctly restore your car to as-new condition right down to the correct camshaft, compression ratio, and rear axle gearing? Do you strive for a mostly correct appearance while secretly embracing invisible internal modifications in the interest of adding horsepower? Do you prefer modified cars ranging from a few simple bolt-ons to radical alterations to the driveline, interior, and body panels? Before you answer those questions, what are your long-term plans for your car? Do you plan to ever sell it? How concerned are you with its resale value, either in the present or in the future? Even if you have no plans of ever selling, consider this: someday your car will be sold. You might clutch the keys until you take your dying breath, but your heirs, their heirs, or somebody down the line will eventually trade your car for cash. Most of us own cars that are worth at least a few thousand dollars; much of the iron present at the shows and cruises in our area is valued in the tens of thousands of dollars. No matter what our cars mean to us or how we wish to build them, we cannot ignore their values. Those values will be important to somebody one day. That said, only you can decide how important the value of your car is to you. Furthermore, it is up to you whether or not you should allow the potential change in your car’s current or future value to influence your decisions on how to build it. Unless the car in question is a high-end custom from a nationally known shop or has an interesting and documented history, such as many TV and movie cars, original cars are usually valued higher than their modified counterparts. Yes, there are obvious exceptions to this statement, but as a rule, a correct car will fetch more greenbacks than an incorrect car. But how much fun is it to drive a car with quiet exhaust, ill-handling skinny bias-ply tires, and undersized drum brakes that are marginal at best? Will it compromise the value of your car to address some of the factory’s shortcomings in the quest to improve the performance, safety, and fun factor of your car? That’s something only you can decide, but understand that every potential future owner will also be affected by your decisions. Furthermore, these decisions will directly impact the size of the pool of potential buyers when it finally comes time to sell. I wonder how important originality will be to the next generation. Will they care if the nuts holding the master cylinder to the firewall are cadmium plated when in fact they are supposed to be black phosphate coated? Will they appreciate that you spent a couple of years and several hundred dollars obtaining the correct date coded exhaust manifolds or the ultra-rare air cleaner that was originally found only on your particular year, model, and engine? Will it matter to them if your car still has its original engine or transmission? We can’t see into the future, but to get an idea of how to best answer these questions perhaps we can look into the past. It’s a tired axiom that we restore the cars we grew up with—either those that we drove in our youth or those that we lusted for but could not afford. A fair number of ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s cars have been restored over the last 40 years, but many of them are no longer in the hands of those who so lovingly refurbished them. Many of these same cars that had been so painstakingly rebuilt decades ago have been reborn as street rods with modern drivelines, brakes, suspension, and interior appointments. Obviously, originality is of little concern to a street rod owner or builder. To them, creativity, build skill, and the driving experience all trump originality. I have owned my ’68 Dodge Dart GT for 32 years. I have modified it, raced it, wrecked it, rebuilt it, and run the wheels off it. My Dart served me faithfully every day for years and it has seen me through every major transition in my life. I will never sell it so I don’t care what it is worth to anybody else, but I know someday it will matter to our kids. I also know that the more appeal it has to others, the better the chance that it will find a good home when I’m gone. My wife and I own a number of other cars, but three are particularly collectible: her ’65 Mustang convertible, our ’67 Plymouth GTX, and our ’68 Plymouth Road Runner. None of these cars has its original engine, though to the untrained eye all three appear stock. Originally equipped with a 260 cubic inch V-8 (long absent by the time we acquired the car), I repowered the Mustang with a later 302 and replaced the automatic transmission with a four-speed. The GTX is powered by a 440 just as it was when it was new, but the

current engine was assembled from a ’72 block, ’69 heads, and a ’69 intake manifold. The Road Runner once cradled a 383 in its engine bay, but a transplanted 400 now resides in its place. Aside from their non-original engines and transmissions, electronic ignition, radial tires, and non-stock wheels, all three cars are pretty much as they left the factory. It is safe to say that all three would be worth more in today’s market if they were in completely original condition, but we have no intention of selling any of the three. Tracking down correctly date coded engine components and correcting the other minor modifications would be time consuming and quite costly, and we would likely never recoup those costs even if we did sell. But would going to the effort and expense to make our cars as correct as possible pay off in the future? When the day comes that our children sell our cars, will they be able to pocket more cash from the next generation buyer to make all the trouble worthwhile? I doubt it. If history repeats itself, definitely not. Recently I came upon an ad for a 440 engine block from a ’67 Dodge Coronet R/T, the sister car to our GTX. The casting date was a couple of months prior to the build date of the GTX, making it suitable for our car. The cylinders were already .040 inch oversize and needed to be bored again, and it was missing the main caps. The seller wanted $600. Buying a set of main caps and then having the block align bored would up the investment to around $1,000, and that’s just to bring the block to the point that it was suitable to build. Furthermore, I would be gambling that the cylinders would clean up at an 0.060 inch overbore. The matching transmission was also available as a core, with no guarantee regarding its serviceability, for an additional $500. By the time I built the engine and transmission I would have to invest at least a few thousand dollars more, all in the interest of obtaining correct date codes. While the VIN is not stamped into the block or transmission case and nobody could prove the car was not built with that engine and transmission, I would not claim those parts to be original to the car. I would simply say it has correctly date coded components.

Writer Frank Adkins in his 1968 Dodge Dart GT.

But the car runs great as it is. After building and installing the new engine and transmission, the driving and ownership experiences wouldn’t be enhanced at all. Although the value of the car would be somewhat elevated from its current level, I doubt that our heirs could recoup our investment. Instead, it would be better to invest that money toward other improvements, such as minor body repairs and paint. For lesser cars, the decision to modify is more complicated. The value of cars lacking “pedigree” are usually dwarfed by those of their high performance and/or well optioned counterparts. Often, tasteful and well planned modifications add to the value of a more pedestrian model, but going over the top can be detrimental to the value of the car in the years to come when those modifications become dated. Just look at the values of the pro-street cars built in the early ‘90s. While I cannot say what the future holds, I do believe that the generation poised to assume ownership of our cars will be less concerned with originality than we are, but also less tolerant of outdated modifications. Whether or not you agree with me, understand that your car will one day change hands. The next owner’s opinions and tastes will likely differ from yours, and those differences will directly impact the value of your car. 7

For the past 25 years Dave and Nancy Cohen have made it a mission to travel to various car events across the country to invite car owners to participate in Dave’s show, East Coast Indoor Nationals. His keen eye for the most unique and high caliber car goes without saying. Each year in Timonium, Md., Dave and his team host this show that includes a Toys for Tots drive with the United Sates Marines on hand to collect toys, a 50/50, a celebrity guest and more. The guest for the this show was a genuine guy from the TV show Counting Cars, none other than Horny Mike. The show is housed indoors at the Cow Palace Hall located at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, which gives everyone a chance to enjoy the event regardless of the weather. A special feature for this show was the raffling off of the “Tot Rod” pick-up truck. You had to be there to see this build that some lucky winner would go home with. As always, this event has a purpose: to raise funds and toys for children as well as allowing spectators a chance to feast their eyes on a great selection of Dave’s handpicked auto eye candy. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Atlantic City Car Auction

Ride & Fly

The beach resort of Atlantic City, New Jersey is noted for its great casinos, super entertainment and fine beaches. But there is an automotive side to the city that comes alive each year and brings thousands of car enthusiasts out to the Atlantic City Classic Car Show and Auction. Hundreds of cars are up for bidding at the Atlantic City Convention Center for this winter happening. If it has wheels, it’s up for auction from cruisers to classics and then some. The auction also has a large group of vendors that have car related goodies for visitors to check out for purchase. It’s a winter car guys and gals experience that has been taking place for over 40 years. This year saw a group of cars for sale from the TV show “Boardwalk Empire”. Event producers GPK Auctions along with the seaside town of Atlantic City...perfect together.

This hobby of ours is deeply rooted in the history of our nation, especially after World War II. Returning servicemen came home with a desire for a normal civilian life and many were ready to enjoy the great American automobile. But at the 7th annual Aviation Celebration at the Millville N.J. Airport, cruising rides weren’t the only things around – vintage military aircraft were on hand for a day of reminding us of times past. The large show also featured rides from all persuasions and the winners were picked by the veterans who served in the military. The Garden State 50’s Car Club did a fine job on the car show and the Millville Air Museum team assembled a great array of aircraft. By the way, if you are a WWII airplane or history buff, visit the Millville Army Airfield Museum.

25th Annual Interclub Meeting

For many years and still to this day the great American pick-up truck is the work horse of the vehicles used on our highways. The pick-up was once the epitome of Spartan rides. Amenities like plush interiors and air conditioning were not what was meant to be on a ride that was essentially meant to get used and abused. Well, today the modern pick-up truck has just about anything you can get in a luxury ride, and it still carries sheets of 4x8 plywood in the back. As a matter of fact, the truck is a great ride to make into a street rod, street machine or resto-ride. The next time you are at a car event, look closely at the vehicles that were once work horses and are now thoroughbreds.

The many members of the car community look forward to the coming of spring and the cruising season by looking for telltale signs. One such harbinger of the car hobby calendar for the upcoming year is the annual Interclub Meeting. This event draws event promoters and representatives from more than 20 car clubs. This year’s 25th annual meeting was hosted by Cruising Magazine and the master of ceremonies was Cruising 101 columnist Larry Lazareff. Several additional speakers stepped up as well during the meeting at Christiana Hilton in Christiana, Del. Needless to the say, the car guys and gals will have a full agenda of events with the many flyers that were on the table. The four states that were represented will definitely have the cruising crowd busy picking and choosing what event to take their ride out to. Cruising Magazine looks forward to serving the members of the car community in the cruising season of 2015. Yes, it’s that time of the year again!

How Do You Like Your “T”? The T-Bucket is one of those cars that seems to be the ambassador of the car hobby. It’s one of those rides that pops up at nearly every car show and you can spot a T in a heartbeat. The original car came in several body styles with the open car later arguably being the most accessible for future rodders. The T-Bucket’s popularity seems to have started with a TV show “77 Sunset Strip” that debuted in 1958. A character named Kookie needed a ride to showcase his cool hot rod-type persona. Enter Norm Grabowski, an avid street rodder and occasional actor. Norm got his hands on a T-Bucket and added some extra touches to the car and, as they say, “a star was born.” The image of the T went from hot rod to cool ride and soon the public began to associate it with the fun and creative side of the car hobby. The neat thing about the T-Bucket is you never see two that are totally alike. Each car is as much an individual as the person who builds it. Enjoy some photos of the car called the Model T that revolutionized America starting in 1908 and seems to never go out of style or fade away.

Four Doors Are Fun, Too If you grew up in the 1950s and ‘60s, you probably understood this idea: what you drove indicated your position or attitude in life. If you were of the sporty persuasion, you may have owned a two door hardtop or a convertible. If you needed more room, you could opt for the two extra doors that allowed extra room for family members, or items that you could put in the back seat and easily retrieve. Those two extra doors gave you access to more car to use. Our hobby seemed to be centered on sportier models for a while and now the cars with four doors are getting the recognition that they deserve. It just goes to show you that if two doors are fun, then four doors are twice the fun when we go cruising. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

The Race of Gentlemen L

Text and photos by Ben Notaro

et’s go back to the early days of the great American automobile. The days before high-tech racetracks were invented and speeds were 200 miles per hour and faster. Men would take their cars, and many times in the confines of their home garages, would invent equipment that would allow the cars to go faster than the factorymade engines would allow. The race track was usually the best location that offered a flat surface for the cars to run on, and the drivers relied on the starter with the flag in hand. Timing was with a mechanical watch. If you lived along the shore and bordered the ocean, you may have been lucky enough to have a long, flat and vast beach to race your car on. Daytona, Fla., became a legend long before the professional race facilities were made because of the sheer size of its beach. It was meant for speed. Today we have tracks that are part of mega-big complexes with high-tech facilities. Wouldn’t it be nice to go back to the days of old when man and car were truly one? To a time when speed equipment was made in the garage and rules and regulations on speed were not so over sophisticated?

Well, there is an event that brings us back to the early days of speed. It’s called The Race of Gentlemen and for the past two out of three years it has been taking place on the beach in Wildwood, N.J. This is an event right out of the past. Cars from as early as 1907 as well as pre-war (WWII) antique motorcycles get to run the eight miles on one of New Jersey’s largest beaches. It’s a blast from the past staged by a car club that has existed since 1947. The Oilers Car Club, under the direction of Meldon Stultz, Jr., coordinated this race with its vintage iron and engines with period-correct speed equipment and modifications. Race participants and enthusiasts came from as far away as California and Finland (yes, Finland) for these two days of old-school speed. On the beach, a festival of sights and sounds with food, displays and music took place. There was also a very period-correct car show at the Wildwood Convention Center lot where customs and classics were on display. Attending this event is a must, to get the feel of what high performance was in its infancy. There is no doubt that everyone had a great time and the racers took their fun in great spirits. It was truly a race of gentlemen. 13

Formerly the Lead Scene East show, the inaugural ECCA Fun Run is slated for June 12-13 For more than 25 years, the Lead Scene East show in Biglerville, Pa., was known as a lead sled-only event. When the show was recently taken over by the East Coast Cruising Association (ECCA), the first thing on the agenda was to open the event to those who had been turned away in the past and renaming it to the ECCA Fun Run. Now, regardless of the year of the vehicle, and whether it’s modified, restyled or restored, it is eligible to participate in the first Fun Run on Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13, at the beautiful Oakside Community Park in Biglerville, Pa., where the original lead-only event began 31 years ago. The new name brings a new variety of activities, awards and live entertainment, all geared toward getting back to the basics of having fun with our cars which translates into some great nostalgic driving games and contests from days gone by. To emphasize what the ECCA is all about, there will be a Coolest Cruiser Contest on Saturday afternoon prior to the awards program with the top ten cruisers taking home 2-3 ft. Best Cruiser trophies. Out of the top ten cruisers, one will be chosen as the King of the Cruisers, winning a beautiful 3-4 ft. trophy. Money giveaways begin before the weekend kicks off on Thursday, June 11, at the Early Bird Pre-Entry Welcome Party. Giveaways will continue on through the weekend with nostalgic driving games/contests, a poker run, live entertainment and the popular $25 per hour participant cash drawings. One day car passes are also available at the gate for $15. THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey gang,

Nearing the end of 2014, several South Jersey car club presidents gathered for an informal meeting at the Millville Motorsports Park restaurant. More than 20 presidents attended this meeting, representing many car organizations from the Tri-State area including the SCCA club from the motorsports facility. The main purpose was to exchange 2015 schedules and discuss any major conflicts. Conversations were also open to whatever was on the mind. Most of the talk was about simply being prepared for events. Make sure your flyers, dates, times, websites, etc., are up to date with all the correct info and contacts. Cliff Shield from cliffscalendar.com attended to remind everyone about the importance of supplying him with the correct info for events. Everyone relies on our own Cruising Magazine and Cliff for all local shows and cruises. Cliff explained the best way to quickly post events on the web and the correct format to send items to him. We thanked Cliff for his work, because if you didn’t know, he does this for free. Our discussions led us in the direction of the inter-club and show-finder meetings held in February and March of every year. By the time clubs and organizations get to those meetings, schedules should be set and in print with all the correct info. It’s too late to find out at those events that your show or cruise is on the same night as another group right down the road from you. Our purpose is to try and avoid that before those meetings. We believe that one conflict has already been solved for the 2015 season simply because of our presidents meeting. You might say, “Big deal, only one conflict solved,” but in reality, it is a big deal for both those events. Each event now has the opportunity to draw more cars and people. It’s also a big deal for the other 20 event organizers sitting at that table, knowing that those events will not impact their show or cruise. Further talk brought us once again to the issue of the “pop-up” show or cruise. We can’t dwell on these events anymore because they happen too often, however we did agree to remind all cruisers to make sure these programs have a cause or charity that’s being supported. It’s extremely important to the local car clubs to present an event that all cruisers in attendance know where their donations are going. We ask that all cruisers know what some of those non-club events out there are for. Raising money for charities is what car clubs are all about. Times and dates of events hosted by cities, businesses, church organizations, restaurants, etc., often change at the last minute, which clubs have no control over. That is what we call being “locked in.” Let’s face it, during the show season there are two or three events daily and definitely more on Saturdays and Sundays. More than one event will be held at the same time. If we can help work out the bugs before the event actually happens, then the mission has been accomplished. There will never be Utopia in this hobby, but we can try to smooth things out for all involved. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun! Let’s remember that. Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

Welcome to spring 2015! We recently had our Inter-Club meeting, which was very well-attended. I want to thank everyone for coming out on a not-too-nice Sunday morning. We now know that a lot of changes have taken place since the end of last show season. Clubs have ended, split up, joined with other clubs, changed names – a whole bunch of stuff. For example, the Downtown Millville Car Show will be run by Cruising Classics, and Millville’s Wings & Wheels Air & Car Show will be run by SJ Cruisers. It is still early in the season, so I know there will be more events added into the already-full calendar. Don’t forget to attend the Salem County Fairgrounds Swap Meet & Flea Market on March 22. Stop at the Cruising Magazine table to get your show flyers and meet some of the staff. As many of you may have heard, I will be attending events this year with my own car, which is a Rat Rod of sorts – definitely different. A 1978 Caddy, 22 ft. long “flower car.” (see below). Yes, a hearse chopped down to a big five door El Camino. It will be easily seen and heard. It seems strange to show a car after all this time, but I’m looking forward to doing it again. I got into the habit of flopping my chair down at shows and getting a tan. But now I can get a tan from the reflection of all that stainless steel in the Flower Car. This was a very rough winter – we’re all sick of that white stuff, but we’ve also had many things to do. Not only did we have the Indoor Nats in Maryland, we had the Philly Car Show and the Atlantic City Car Show. Additionally, many people like the Diner Riders, cars and coffee gang or retired car enthusiasts attended breakfasts and lunches. Using any excuse to get together just as friends, not for a club function, is something we don’t do enough of. Remember, those putting on events are giving their best effort, and yes some mess up, but it’s all part of the learning process. Always be open to suggestions but not on the day of your event, you’ve done the work so enjoy it, and if you did screw up, next year is another chance. And don’t forget – ask questions! You are in the hobby, and you know who’s been around, so ask.

I’ll be seeing you at the events,

Larry Lazareff Cell: 856-297-5012 after 6pm • larrylazareff@gmail.com

For those who need to send me information, please forward to:

I

f you are a veteran driver of 30 years or more you usually hop into your contemporary ride and drive to wherever you have to go. OK. Having starting my column off with the obvious, let’s proceed on a trip that I made in my SUV on a cool, rainy day. Now, for the record, I have three cars that I can use: my wife’s, my son’s and my own. Therefore the adjustments needed to drive any of these cars can be occasionally confusing to a fellow like me. Now you may ask what does this have to do with driving cars from the 1970s on back. Well, let me explain. First, I miss the rain gutters on older cars. Unless the rain is coming down sideways, these simple devices did a good job of keeping some rain from cascading into the car. Today, it seems the car’s roof is a bit narrower than the body and you have a deluge of water showering you. I also bemoan the lack of vent windows – the somewhat triangular shaped windows that let cigarette smoke out and gave you a bit of fresh air on a rainy day. My real confusion starts when I need to use the windshield wipers. Back in the day…turn a dash knob. My car has a right column stalk (pull it in), my wife’s car right stalk forward, my son’s car right stalk up…or was it down. The same goes for bright headlights. How I miss the foot pedal on the floor. On the family cars it’s the stalk position of up, down, back or forth. Windshield washers used to be a knob on the dash or a foot pedal under the dash. It’s now on stalk number five on the steering column. Was it up, down or forward in my son’s car? I can’t remember. So now I’m traveling and some jerk cuts in front of me and it’s time to lay on the horn. In a newer car, it’s a “find the horn symbol” game on the steering wheel. The horn is seldom on the bugle embossed on the wheel. Remember the old car horn ring? Press that baby down hard and blow that horn loud and clear. My travels now take me to my favorite fast food restaurant for a gourmet meal. I used to keep loose change in the ash tray. Today there are no ashtrays. If you’re lucky there’s a storage container that you use. Usually the storage compartment is hidden among high tech cup holders. Even a spare tire is so geeky: open the trunk and staring at me is a poor excuse for a tire. That’s the spare known as the donut. This is also called one ugly wheel among four good ones. I know the concept was created to save space, but it seems some drivers never seem to change a donut spare and go traveling down the road on this “tire” until they need a spare for a spare. I can’t even have a bag of items on the front seat. Every car seems to have bucket seats and not the good-old-use-the-right-arm-to-steady-the-bag-while-driving technique a bench seat offered. Well, now you know why we say the good old…oh, did I tell you about the time I got into an argument with my cell phone’s automated voice Siri? Never mind, that’s another story. Yes, I kind of miss the good old days of driving. Department of Spring: Safety check for the car…don’t forget. Department of Aging: Club getting stale? Then try new ideas. Department of Transportation: Enjoy the hobby your way, it’s not about crossing bridges or traveling…it’s about what you want to do.
