Fathers, Sons and Super Cars Writer Frank Adkins and his father take a drive together—and the result is unanticipated By Frank Adkins 6

In 1990 I purchased a ’68 Dodge Dart GTS powered by a 340. It was my first true ost of the people who know my father would never mistake him for an muscle car. At 275 horsepower and 3038 pounds shipping weight, its power to weight automotive enthusiast. He has lived his life as a devoted family man ratio worked out to 11.05 pounds per horsepower. EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

24th Annual Downtown Millville Car Show

Renault Winery Car Show Extravaganza

Every car show has its unique personality, and each year for 24 years the city of Millville, N.J., and the Garden State 50’s Auto Club have teamed up to put on an event that fills the center of town. This show draws in more than 300 rides that look right at home in the quaint avenue of shops and eateries along the city’s main thoroughfare, High Street. The sounds of a vocal group called the Angeltones and the music of local DJ Chris Randazzo (WVLT 92.1 FM) filled the air with music that took everyone back to the good old days. There was no lack of food or vendors at this cool car gathering. It was a great summer day to enjoy with friends and family.

Fine wine and fine rides have a lot in common. They stimulate the senses. The Renault Winery located in Egg Harbor Township, in the heart of the South Jersey area, held its annual car show and wine festival. The winery has all of the bases covered with two fine restaurants, a golf course and lodging accommodations. Now take all of these amenities and have a car show, a dozen wineries (for the festival) in attendance where participants sample their wares and throw in music, great weather and you have a super fun weekend. The event spans two days with Saturday for the car show and Sunday for the balance of the festival. A package is available to stay overnight with your ride and have a festival to enjoy the next day. A weekend treat for the senses, indeed! Check out the winery for more great events at renaultwinery.com.

7th Annual Salute to Our Veterans Cruise Events have a way of evolving from humble beginnings to large happenings. One such event is the “Salute to Our Veterans Cruise.” This cruise is now in its 7th season and with over 450 rides and 100 motorcycles, it has come a long way from the first cruise of 12 cars and no spectators. How does a cruise blossom into a powerhouse over time you may ask? It become a matter of having a team of dedicated people and two car clubs that worked together to put it on. Each year the South Jersey Cruisers Association, Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club, the Fox family and WVLT 92.1 FM DJ Steve Tatz team up to put on a cruise to honor the veterans who reside at the New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial Home in Vineland, N.J. This cruise is a tribute to the real super heroes of our great land and that is the members of our armed forces and especially those who reside at the Veterans’ Home. A large group of spectators and of course cruisers come out to say “thank you” to America’s sons and daughters who have allowed us the opportunity to enjoy our hobby. By the way, this writer is the announcer for the veterans’ wheelchair races each year. These guys and gals take this competition seriously and the nice thing about the race: They are all winners.

The Rollin Rods of South Jersey Car Club hosted their 25th annual “Funtastic Rod Run and Wine Festival” show at the Bellview Winery in Landisville, N.J. This show is one of those events where you just want to relax, have a glass of wine from Bellview’s own winery and enjoy the last unofficial day of the summer. There were plenty of rides complimented by the food and Bellview wines. Let’s not forget vendors and a really neat commemorative wine glass. It all makes for a festival that makes for a fun day. This show had a large turnout of nearly 400 fine rides from a four-state area. Along with live entertainment, a super DJ (aka Mac Thomas) pleasant weather and the largest Chinese auction in the car community, it was a funtastic day for car enthusiasts and for enjoying an entertaining wine festival.

It’s About Fun This is a warning: Car events can be beneficial to your health. Some car events are just plain fun when it comes down to the nitty gritty. You see plenty of cars and there is usually a DJ, sometimes live entertainment and smiles, smiles, smiles. It could be the fun of looking at a race from the top of a five-story observation tower, getting your next generation interested in the old car hobby, or even sharing a mic with the DJ. Here’s a sampling of the fun of the cruise or show that we sometimes forget. Because when you come right to the car scene, it’s about fun. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

(More) Car Family Photos Each week there are members of the car family that we see and get to meet and greet at an event. Here are some photos of more of our fellow cruisers and some of future cruisers that were in attendance a few recent car shows. Notice they share a very special characteristic for cruisers: A smile and the enjoyment of fun rides. By the way, it’s been a great season...the endless summer of 2014. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 11

Fall Carlisle Celebrates 40 Years

Italian Affair Cruise Having a car cruise at a restaurant is always a great way to share time with our cruising rides and also having a meal with friends. Having a cruise at an Italian restaurant is also a neat way to enjoy everything from pasta to pizza. The Nostalgia Knight Classic Car Club held a cruise at the Italian Affair Restaurant in Glassboro, N.J., and what a cruise it was. A picture-perfect summer evening with a free buffet for many of the participants made for one buona sera (good evening). With tunes by DJ John the Hat, nearly 200 cars and a taste of Italy, it was almost like a European vacation on wheels. It was also a molto bene per tutti (great time for all). — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Carlisle, PA – For Bill and Lance Miller, the 2014 Carlisle Events “home” schedule ends where it all started for Bill and Chip Miller in 1974—Fall Carlisle. Fall Carlisle is the company’s flagship event and during year one it was known as Post-War ’74. Despite a rebrand in 1975 to the Fall Carlisle moniker, the event has remained widely popular. In fact, Fall Carlisle is a popular destination for automotive enthusiasts due to the fact that it is essentially the last go around for automotive shopping before the winter months set in. It’s also one of the last chances for enthusiasts to catch up and talk shop about all things automotive. In brief, Fall Carlisle, which runs October 1-5 in 2014, embraces people from around the world and has done so annually for 40 years. An event like Fall Carlisle is a three-headed monster of excitement. There is a swap meet where automotive pieces and parts, merchandise and collectibles are bought and sold. This is a great outlet for further enhancing a collector car, restoring one or simply adding to the proverbial “man cave.” Option two is the car corral. If show goers aren’t looking to fix up a classic but would rather buy direct, the car corral is a simple face to face option for that to occur. Cars and trucks spanning automotive history comprise the car corral and with tax and tag service onsite, plus banking too; it makes the process that much simpler. Another awesome aspect of the weekend is the highly popular Fall Carlisle collector car auction. The auction is backed by Carlisle Auctions and runs October 2-3 at the neighboring Carlisle Expo Center. Carlisle Auctions hosts about 300 cars over two days and highlights to date include a 1956 Corvette that was owned by Carlisle Events cofounder Chip Miller. Finally, Fall Carlisle will include something special this year—a 40th Anniversary birthday party and celebration. Many details of this get together are still being planned, but aspects will include a special recognition of the dozens of original vendors from 1974 that are still vending today, a dinner for them, birthday cake for all to enjoy, games, prizes, music and more. John Matish (pictured at right), found this unique treasure, complete with replica Tommy Gun, abandoned in a garage. Photos by Ben Notaro

A Real Find! Car lover finds ‘forgotten-about’ 1928 Buick By Larry Lazareff n my last few columns I talked about “barn” finds and similar discoveries. Now, it’s great to find a unique vehicle, but you’re not done until you have all of the paper work. A good friend of mine has such a vehicle, with all of the right papers and copies of all previous titles. I would like to tell you the story. Let’s go back, way back, before car shows, back to 1928. Location: Bridgeton, N.J., the county seat of Cumberland County. Place: Mulford Buick (the local dealer in Bridgeton) had a 1928 Sedan Model 27 Series 115 for sale for $1295.00. That was a lot of money back then. The Buick was sold to a man from Bridgeton and five owners later (all were from Bridgeton), the vehicle was bought by John Matish of Bridgeton on March 20, 2008. The vehicle was last driven in 1949 and still has the inspection sticker from that year. In 1949, the car was put away for storage in a garage outside of Fortescue, NJ (south of Bridgeton) by the owner’s widow and basically forgotten about. In 2007, Matish was doing some work for the property owners, saw it, did some investigating and eventually was able to purchase it in 2008, although it did take some added work – a tree had grown in front of the garage doors. Now 86 years old, it has been a documented Bridgeton-titled car its entire life. When purchased by Matish it had 61,480 miles on it; today it has a whopping 72,000 miles. He also has a tool kit and a 1928 jack for it. The car appears today

I

basically the same way it was put into the garage in 1949. A real time capsule. The spare tire is original, as is the upper radiator hose, as is most of the vehicle. The interior is also original, it even has pull-down window shades. It remains a six-volt system with headlights measured in “candle power.” The only repairs made to the car have been to the roof (it took a craftsman to do the wood work) and general maintenance. After all those years it spent in storage, the motor had not seized. After being home with Matish for less than two weeks she was up and running. Although he has never tried to hand crank it, the crank remains under the seat, useable if needed. One of the only options of the vehicle has the replica “Tommy Gun.” Matish keeps that on the back seat. When going to shows Matish enjoys freaking people out by doing 45-50 mile per hour on 86-year-old original wooden-spoke wheels. At shows, yes, it does gets confused with the Model A, and it is definitely a conversation piece. Few ask: “Are you going to restore it?” Most of the comments are more along the lines of: “Leave it just like that” and “Did you drive that here?” The car attracts people like a magnet, and John is always happy to talk about it, as are his friends. Matish also has a second car, also fully documented. It’s a 1953 Dodge Cornet with a 241 cubic-inch hemi. 13

I don’t normally ask for favors from my loyal readers but this time I’m asking for one. I’d like you to stop and take the time to think about the great people in our car hobby. Yours truly has been involved with car shows and cruises for more than 40 years. Now I ask you; did you ever take the time to figure out why one hangs around the car scene for so long of a period? Well, the easy part is the love of cars. It doesn’t matter if it’s a classic or contemporary ride it’s just a strong passion for all things that have wheels. Then, in my opinion, an extremely important reason I’ve enjoyed the hobby is quite simply the people you meet. It’s a great feeling to go to a car gathering and have people give you a smile and a handshake followed by casual conversation. Just think about this. Here we are people of many persuasions and backgrounds all sitting on a comfy chair talking cars. The camaraderie of the car folks is the stuff of countless stories. Did you ever have a dead battery at a show and a perfect stranger is ready to help? Perhaps the ride does not want to start and a group of car enthusiasts jump in with tools and mechanical advice. This is our hobby and we should take the time to take stock in it and the people we meet. Think about the friendships that you develop over the years that came about by being into cars. I was fortunate enough to have friends that I met in my Corvette days that eventually became attendants and one of them my best man in my wedding. We still keep our friendships going almost 40 years strong. That’s just a few of the guys and gals that I have been fortunate enough to meet in the hobby who have enriched my life with their association. Yes, it’s about cars but it sure is more than just a hobby when you get to know many really fine people.

I’ve never seen a lucky little child have so many high performance Godparents. Department of Fun: This is part 2 of the Summer of 2014. It goes on until the roads are totally snow or ice covered and getting out just won’t work.
