Today’s show cars a small sample of what used to be By Frank Adkins
A
friend of mine owns a business that caters to the restoration crowd. He stocks a full line of reproduction parts for popular muscle cars, he performs restorations and general maintenance on special interest cars, and he occasionally deals in used parts. Several months ago he acquired the remains of a restored but badly wrecked ’69 Barracuda, and a few
nights ago I stopped by his shop to help him dismantle the car and to grab a few parts from it for one of my own projects. We were removing the rear suspension and axle while trying to preserve as much of the original hardware as possible, and of course the rusty U-bolts gave us fits. In place of the heavy duty leaf springs and axle we were installing light duty pieces from a very rusty ’64 Dart I had recently parted out, and the
6
corroded shackles from that car proved equally uncooperative, so we had plenty of time to talk while we worked. We had both grown up in northern Delaware and eventually the conversation turned to the cars we remember from our youth. These weren’t necessarily the cars owned by us or our friends, but those we remember seeing on the road that left lasting impressions on us. I turned sixteen in 1981, so I was too young to participate in the fun during the heyday of the muscle car, but as an impressionable youth I was enthralled by the sights, sounds, and smells of the street racing that was common in the seventies. Riding with my parents I witnessed frequent stop light to stop light acceleration trials on Kirkwood Highway, and from an early age I was hooked.
My friend is a few years older than I, so while I watched the action from the back seat he lived it in the driver’s seat. He spoke of the cars he remembered encountering on the street, most notably a ’71 Hemi Challenger convertible and a ’69 Dart GTS powered by a 383. After he graduated high school he worked as a used car mechanic at a Chevrolet dealership in Wilmington for a few years, and he spoke of several trade-ins that he could have purchased for next to nothing, cars such as big block Corvettes. My father’s job required frequent trips out of town, often for weeks at a time. After taking him to the Philadelphia airport one Sunday afternoon, my mother, sisters, and I stopped at McDonald’s on Kirkwood Highway. I was eight at the time, and I immediately spotted a red ’32 Ford Roadster in the parking lot. Even at that age I knew it was a ’32 due to the contoured grille shell. Though normally timid I walked over, admired it, and asked the owner if it was, indeed, a ’32. He confirmed what I already knew and stated that he had traded his Corvette for it a week or two earlier. But there were other cars even closer to home. I rattled off several of the cars I remember from the neighborhood where I grew up—cars I had ridden my bike past hundreds of times while studying their lines and yearning to drive. I was about nine when a young couple moved in three doors away, and they had a black ’71 Chevelle SS 454 four-speed with white SS stripes. A few houses beyond them, a high school kid owned a green ’69 Camaro with aluminum slots and the requisite air shocks. After that car was wrecked he bought another ’69 Camaro, this one blue with Cragars. Just beyond his house was a family that owned a dark green ’68 Charger R/T with a black vinyl top and a white bumblebee stripe. Around the corner and up the hill was a family whose sons owned several Fords including a Ranchero, a ’68 Mustang GT, and a Shelby Mustang. Nearby was a modified ’69 Chevelle with stickers in the rear quarter windows from Cecil County Dragway. I could see this car from my bedroom window, and since it had been outfitted with headers, glass packs, and flex pipe I remember the raspy crackle of the exhaust. Also nearby was a ’65 Chevelle, black with a red interior, and powered by a 327 and a four-speed. Around the corner in the other direction from our house sat a silver ’69 Camaro Rally Sport, an early ‘70s Firebird Formula, a maroon ’67 Satellite, and a white ’69 Dart GTS convertible with a red interior and black top and bumblebee stripe. This car had a 340 and an automatic transmission and I lusted for it the most, probably due to its color combination and distinctive exhaust note. It rumbled through dual stock mufflers with restrained authority. In about 1975 a new neighbor appeared, and with him came the addition of an early V-8 Vega with a four-speed and a wild blue and orange paint scheme. All of these cars were within two blocks of our suburban home, but there were several more elsewhere in our neighborhood. They included a Mustang Mach 1, a couple of GTOs (one with a hood tach), a couple of 442s, a couple of Dusters, a handful of Camaros, a few Chevelles (one a primered ’70 SS convertible), and a ’70 Challenger R/T convertible to name a few. By the
time I had tucked my newly minted driver’s license into my wallet most of the top dog cars— those with letters such as SS, R/T, and GT associated with their names— were well out of my reach. Several Camaros, Novas, Chevelles, and Mustangs could still be found in my high school parking lot, and some had been built to be fairly potent, but few had true muscle car pedigree. Then my buddy asked, “Where are they now?” His question stunned me for a moment. “They couldn’t have all been wrecked. What happened to them?” As I pondered his question I thought of the junkyards I had begun to frequent when I was fifteen. Occasionally a muscle car would show up in the crop of recently discarded vehicles, but such occurrences were disproportionately rare considering the throngs of desirable cars that had roamed the streets and highways just a few years earlier. Where are they now? It was a good question, and one without an easy answer. Obviously some of these cars fell victim to collisions spawned by tire and suspension technology that was primitive by today’s standards coupled with high horsepower and exuberant, unseasoned drivers. Such was the case with the Barracuda from which we were harvesting its usable parts. But we were talking about cars that are now 40 to 50 years old, cars that were used day in and day out, most of which were driven year-round, not garaged, and received little to no special attention. Here in the rust belt our roads are treated with copious amounts of salt during the winter months, and that salt breeds tin worms which feed on steel and can devour a car in a matter of a few short years. Nearly all of the cars that remain today have been afflicted with varying degrees of infestation of the little buggers. Some simply fell into the wrong hands, being run into the ground and left for dead, while others became race cars with bodies that were tubbed, caged, etc. Although our hobby remains strong and most cruises and car shows boast impressive numbers of participants, it is sobering to think that the cars that show up at these events represent a small percentage of similar vehicles that once existed. Could so many of the cars we remember, those that left indelible marks on our psyche, have been destroyed through various means, rendering them non-existent today? I like to imagine that many of them were stashed in garages and largely forgotten. There they sit, patiently waiting to be rediscovered, revived, and put to the pavement once more. Such cars do exist and they surface from time to time, but not frequently enough for my liking. Still, they give us reason to hope and to investigate any leads on such cars. The ’69 Dart GTS convertible I mentioned left quite an impression on me. The last time I ever saw it was 30 years ago, in the summer of 1983. Some years later I owned a ’68 GTS convertible, dark green with a white top, white bumblebee stripe, and green-and-white interior. It, too, was powered by a 340 and had a console-shifted automatic transmission, but I was forced to part with it in 1995. Since then it, too, has fallen off the radar. I’d like to think that both cars are tucked away somewhere, and it is that hope that keeps me checking the classic car classifieds and auctions. Where are they now?
Could so many of the cars we remember, “ those that left indelible marks on our psyche, have been destroyed through various means, rendering them non-existent today?

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS
23rd Annual Millville Car Show Millville, N.J., is a community located in the heart of South Jersey, with a main street that is referred to as the Arts District. So, when the city held the 23rd Annual Millville Car Show, you couldn’t get much better art than the 300 fine rides that came out. High Street was alive with thousands of spectators and car owners on a pleasant summer day. This event had all of the ingredients to make a show enjoyable. There were DJs along with live entertainment, local businesses with information kiosks, and plenty of great food. The cars on display were real eye candy and the quaintness of the downtown shopping area made for a day for car guys and gals to enjoy. The Garden State 50’s Auto Club and the Millville Chamber of Commerce teamed up to create this great show. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Top Right: Cruising Magazine’s contributor Ben Notaro, with the assistance of Miss Vineland, Olivia Cruz, stages the wheelchair races. Bottom: Where do three two-ton military cruisers park at a cruise? Anywhere they want.
A Salute to Veterans There are many freedoms that we hold dear. These freedoms are protected by members of various military branches. Many car clubs make it a point to support our nation’s war veterans, along with those who are currently active in service. Two car clubs, the South Jersey Cruisers Association and the Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club, have teamed up for the past six years to stage the Salute to Our Veterans Cruise. They, along with radio host Steve Tatz of WVLT 92.1 FM and the Fox family, produce an annual tribute – American all the way. This year’s cruise featured a Civil War reenactment group, the presenting of our nation’s colors by the Delsea Regional JROTC, and plenty of food and music. Veterans also participated in the traditional wheelchair race. This year’s cruise featured more than 400 cars and 200 motorcycles. On this beautiful summer day everyone gave special thanks to those who reside at the New Jersey Veteran Memorial Home in Vineland, N.J., and we gave our appreciation to all who have served. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

American Muscle SCCA Style American muscle car performance has usually been touted as a dragstrip activity. Let’s face it, the car wars of legends took place with the Big Three auto makers (remember them?) hitting the quarter mile pavement with Super Stock and FX cars in their quest to covet potential customer attention. American muscle still has other venues to show that domestic cars are here to make a performance statement. The South Jersey Region of the Sports Car Club of America held its Summer Thunder Regional series at the New Jersey Motorsport Park in Millville, N.J. The sight of Corvettes and Mustangs as well as a classic Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda made for an “American-proud” feeling. Watching these rides on a road course at over 150 mph was another way of telling the world that cars born in the USA are far from dull and still quite competitive. Check out the South Jersey Region of the SCCA and the New Jersey Motorsport Park online and attend some of their events. You will discover that American muscle rules in many forms of auto activities. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Car Show For A Cure Car enthusiasts are as passionate about helping worthwhile causes as they are about enjoying their hobby. A case in point is the 2nd annual Car Show for a Cure. More than 200 rides of all makes and models came out to help the Sarcoma Foundation of America in their quest to raise funds to help find a cure for sarcoma, a form of cancer. The show would not be complete if it did not have some great entertainment – and it certainly did. A performance by the music group “Levi Road” and tunes by WVLT 92.1 FM’s own DJ, Pepper Paul, made sure that music constantly filled the air. With lots of vendors, a fine location at Washington Township High School in Sewell, N.J., and the support of the car community, Car Show for a Cure promoted awareness and raised funds for a worthwhile cause. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

For those of you who are wine connoisseurs: not all vintners are on the West Coast. The right side of the map shows that New Jersey has its share of great wine producers, too. Many of these wineries have festivals that display their fine vintages. What better place to have a car show that features cars and wines of the finest vintages than the Belleview Winery in Landisville, N.J? The Rollin Rods of South Jersey Car Club hosted their 24th annual Funtastic Rod Run and Wine Festival show at their new location. This show had a large turnout of nearly 400 fine rides and many vendors. Along with live rockabilly entertainment, a super DJ, Mac Thomas, a pleasant day and the largest Chinese auction in the car community, it was a funtastic day for car enthusiasts and for enjoying an entertaining wine festival. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro
Cruisers... The Cool Guys & Gals That Make Our Hobby
Car shows and cruises are very special, and not just because of the cars but because of the people. Each time we go to a cruise or show we are, many times, greeted by the handshakes and smiles of the members of the car community. In a few words: they are the coolest group to be lucky to know. This Cruising Magazine contributor has been fortunate to know so many people in the hobby and to share the love of cars with them. I really wish I could photograph them all. Here are just a few of the many great fellow cruisers that we share our hobby with. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Hot Summer Nights Cruise at the Riverview Beach Park Car clubs have been very instrumental in supporting our troops. Our armed forces allow us the American way of life that we enjoy today. Car guys and gals recognize this and are always ready to support these men and women in uniform. The Road Knights Car Club teamed up with Riverview Park in Pennsville, N.J., to host a cruise dedicated to raising donations that will go to assisting our active members of the armed forces. By the looks of everyone that attended, it was obvious that the Road Knights achieved a goal that will help a worthwhile cause. With almost 500 cars coming out on a picture perfect summer evening, great food and a selection of rides from Delaware and New Jersey, the support and admiration of our troops was very obvious. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Fall Classics Fall Carlisle, Zephyrhills Auto Fest provide dynamic one-two punch for car enthusiasts Fall Carlisle is a rite of autumn for area car enthusiasts and a proud tradition for the founders of Carlisle Events. The 40th offering of Fall Carlisle, set for Oct. 2-6 at the Carlisle Fairgrounds and Expo Center (Carlisle, Pa.), is an event that launched Carlisle Events as a company in 1974. It features a five-day swap meet and car corral as well as a two-day auction, presented by Auctions America. The auction itself runs Thursday, Oct. 3 and Friday, Oct. 4. As a whole, the event is substantial in size. The fairgrounds boast 82 acres within its fence line and another 68 off site. On grounds, Fall Carlisle features 8,100 vending spaces and since the early years of the event, each space has been filled with a vendor selling automotive pieces, parts and collectibles. In addition to the amazingly large swap meet, many spaces also feature cars that are for sale by owner via the car corral, sponsored by Auto Trader Classics. In each instance, onsite financing is available, plus with tax and title services available too, buying or selling at Carlisle is very simple. In addition to the shopping fun, just blocks away the Carlisle Expo Center hosts Auctions America and its always-popular collector car auction. This is the third Fall Carlisle offering for Auctions America and once again, they are promising an amazing lot of cars that will cross the block for two days. In total, some 300 rides are expected and they’ll range from early classics to recent muscle as well as many unique offerings in between. Admission for Fall Carlisle is $10 through Saturday, $5 on Sunday and kids aged 12 and under are admitted free. Further, a weekend pass is available for $30, allowing unlimited access to the grounds over the course of the event. On November 14-17, Zephyrhills Fall AutoFest and its parent company, Carlisle Events, return to Pasco County. The event takes place at Festival Park (just south of downtown Zephyrhills) and features a twoday collector car auction as well as a four-day swap meet and car corral. In addition, there are celebrities, special cars, displays and attractions, plus new for the fall of 2013, a special invitational/VIP parking area has been established, giving the grounds a true car show feel. Highlights include a 40th anniversary celebration of American Graffiti. As part of the gathering, enthusiasts can meet Cindy Williams (Lori) and Candy Clark (Debbie) from the film. Additional activities include a parachute team jumping in to deliver the American Flag, great food and a relaxing atmosphere. Daily admission varies, with tickets running $8 on Thursday, $10 on Friday and Saturday and $5 on Sunday. Children 12 and under are free, plus parking is free all around the Festival Park grounds. -- For more information on Fall Carlisle and how to be a part of the event, visit www.CarlisleEvents.com.
It’s probably safe to say that you attended a cruise or car show and listened to the DJ filling the air with sweet music. Now, how many events do you go to where the DJ is staging the cruise? I’d guest few and none…except the Uncle Al’s Cruise at the Golden Corral Restaurant event. Local DJ and WVLT 92.1 FM radio personality, Al Snyder, staged the cruise to share some music with his fellow car enthusiasts. He also teamed up with the Golden Corral Restaurant in Vineland for the location. The cruise gave the participants a great discounted meal and lots of music to enjoy a hot summer night. Uncle Al is a car (Corvette) guy who’s always playin’ what you’re sayin’ on Uncle Al’s Music Warehouse on Friday nights at 11 p.m.

I
t pays to do your homework before you get going on a project. Take for instance the project that you want to do on your special ride. Perfect example: an idea that I had for my ’63 ’Vette. I had always wanted air conditioning in the car. I’ve owned this car for 40 years and it is a fun convertible in the spring and autumn. In the summer, though, it’s just plain too hot to drive. I decided to do some research on what it takes to put an AC unit in my car. My first source was a Corvette magazine that had a “How To” article about installing the unit in a C2 ’Vette. The article stated that it will only take a few days with simple tools and maybe the help of a friend. This easy application piqued my interest and I decided to go to my local Corvette emporium and ask the mechanic just how easy it is to use this remedy for a hot interior. Just by good luck, he was installing an after market unit in a ’65 coupe. Ah, now I can see how simple it is to put in an AC unit in my car and save a ton of money by doing it myself. Here is where reality sets in. I saw how much work that was needed to put this idea into motion. The “How To” articles don’t always tell you about the things like how much time it takes a novice to put this AC unit into operation. Usually it’s a happy comment like: “In just a day or two” or “Before you know it…” Do your homework before you consider a major project on your car. It’s best to check with a professional on how much time and real effort is involved in a given project on a given car. Some things are relatively easy for those who have had experience in completing some modifications to a vehicle. It seems easy in an article when everything is done in the right facility with the right people working on it. “How To” articles are very informative but also tend to omit (there’s only so much space) the much needed information that should be in the middle of each photograph. Doing your homework can also save you money that you were not expecting to spend to complete your “How To” project. Now back to my idea of air conditioning my ’Vette. I’ve put the idea on indefinite hold. I figure that if I’d take the dash apart and everything else related to this project then I would be stuck with this never completed idea. Alas, a big bucket wish not to be fulfilled. Department of Interior: Anyone ever put an AC unit in a 2nd gen ‘Vette? Department of De Fence: If you belong to a car club, don’t be a member that sits on “de fence.” Offer to help at your club’s events and participate in your clubs activities. Department of Bright Ideas: A bumper sticker that says: “Did You Cruise Today?” As we go into the rest of the year, I hope you enjoy our hobby by participating with friends and family. Take a kid to a cruise, and maybe even use your ride in a school event to promote the fun of cool cars. And most of all, enjoy everything in good health.

CRUISING 101
Hi Gang, Well, it’s here – cooler, less humid weather. The time of year that the big blocks do their best. No more days where we wait in line with the temps of 105 degrees and our cars at 225 degrees. No more days where it’s 95 outside, 125 on the pavement and 155 in the outhouse. Fall is like spring – fresh air is around our area. And with the cooler temp, shows are in major abundance. The most noticeable difference between the spring and fall shows is that fall shows are not known for rain outs, although this year who can say? However, keep in mind that it’s not the time of year to sit back and relax, it’s the time of year to look at your events, and decide what the hits were and what the misses were. What worked, what flopped? Now is the time to correct these items. Figure the weak points of your event, and why. Don’t be afraid to ask your friends who aren’t club members their opinions, likes and dislikes. You may not want to hear everything that they have to say but in the end you will appreciate it. Also, think about getting early flyers out and getting dates set up for next year. The best I’ve seen is when an organization puts their years’ worth of events on one flyer. It’s easy, let’s people know dates you’re planning to use, and what you’re up to. These are also easy to use at the inter-club meetings, including Cruising Magazine’s meeting on Sunday, Feb. 23 (see ad in this issue). Also, in January is the MASRA Inter-Club, and in March Kent Island and Show Finder have their respective inter-club meetings. These meetings encourage conversation between enthusiasts in a relaxed setting. We at Cruising Magazine are hoping that you and yours have a happy and safe holiday season. And please think of our advertisers when doing your holiday shopping. By the way, on Saturday, Nov. 9, Cruising staff members and I will have the CM stand set up as usual at Flemings for The Pumpkin Run. If you have flyers, please bring them to our stand, right under the big American Flag next to the DJ stand. Stop by and say hello! Also, last issue when I mentioned the Merchantville Show and the Reah brothers and their staff, I neglected to mention the third member, Kevin, and I do apologize for that. A great job by all.
See you all at the events, and please stop and say hi,
Larry
