DEFEATING THE POST-RESTORATION BLUES How to stay motivated for that ever-possible continuous follow-up work By Frank Adkins
6
O
n TV shows about car building or in magazine write-ups chronicling restorations, the focus always seems to be on the steps taken to transform a rusty pile of scrap into the vision held in its owner’s mind. Parts are sourced, metal is cut and welded, upholstery is stitched, and the mechanical components and sub-systems are rebuilt or replaced. Eventually the car comes together. All of that hard work culminates in a gleaming piece of automotive art, and that’s the end of the story. All that follows is a list of credits, either at the end of the tidy half-hour TV show or at the end of the equally-tidy magazine story. But is this really the end of the build? In the early 1990s a friend bought his dream car—a finned Plymouth Fury. Although it had a number of flaws, it was quite presentable and it served him and his wife well for many years. Over time, however, a few nagging mechanical issues grew tiring. Then the dormant rust awoke, manifesting itself as a pimply rash along the lower extremities of the quarter panels. Having now owned the Plymouth for roughly ten years, the couple enlisted the help of another friend with a fledgling restoration business to disassemble the car, nurse its tired body back to health, and oversee the refurbishing of all mechanical and electrical components. This gentleman would then reassemble it. Work began in earnest and some major obstacles were overcome, but in time all progress ground to a halt. The naked hull languished for many years. Eventually it was shuffled to another shop where it lay dormant for a few more years. My friend is a very patient man, but after a number of failed attempts to jump-start the restoration, he grew disgusted. He sold the car in pieces. The gentleman who purchased it specializes in restoring Chrysler vehicles of the Virgil Exner era. He completed the restoration, after which my friend bought it back from him. He was confident in doing so because after so many years of ownership he felt that he knew the car well. It would have been a fitting ending to the tale had that actually been the end. But it wasn’t. His first outing was to the Department of Motor Vehicle. On his way home, the Plymouth backfired and quit without warning. It was out of fuel despite the gauge showing nearly half a tank. Soon other issues arose, including minor oil leaks, power steering that proved grumpy when cold, and the convertible top frame, which became bound and snapped. None of these issues existed prior to the Plymouth’s restoration, but somehow each was induced by the work that had been performed. We tend to focus on the steps required to build or restore a car, but we seldom discuss the follow-up work necessary to identify and eradicate those pesky postrestoration demons. Little after-attention may be necessary for a vehicle that will be pushed or driven no further than from its trailer to its space on the show field, but for those of us who drive our cars regularly, and for any appreciable distance, this phase of the build is crucial to our long-term satisfaction and enjoyment. Of course, the skill, experience, and astuteness of the builder or restorer go a long way toward mitigating the post-restoration blues, but it impossible to prevent them entirely. Our cars weren’t perfect when they were built. Now, half a century later, those imperfect cars have been abused, neglected, wrecked, worn-out and weathered. It’s a tall order to return such cars to as-new condition. Next, consider that a vehicle undergoing restoration will be disassembled by human hands. Its body and all of its electrical and mechanical components will be refurbished by human hands. It will then be reassembled by human hands. Most often, years will have passed during the interim. In many cases, including that of my friend’s car, the hands that reassemble
the car are not the same hands that disassembled it. With so much potential for human error throughout process, it is unrealistic to think that any restored vehicle won’t have at least a few issues. Compounding the problem is that no repair is any better than the quality of the parts used. I, for one, am thankful for the plethora of reproduction body panels and other parts currently being produced for old cars. With the availability of parts cars and good used parts drying up, few of us can complete our car projects without these new replacement parts. That said, many of the parts we rely on to restore our cars are not of comparable quality to those installed by the manufacturers when our cars were built. Despite our best efforts to compensate, the use of substandard parts is likely to be reflected in the quality of our finished vehicles. I suspect a poorly calibrated replacement fuel level sender is to blame for the inaccurate fuel gauge reading in the Plymouth. Adjustments may also be needed. The steering wheel may be off-center or the car may drift to one side. The distributor may need to be recurved and/or there might be a light “ping” on acceleration. The windows may need to be adjusted to alleviate an annoying wind whistle. It is impossible to know about issues such as these until after the car has been completed and driven at least a time or two. As a child I was a fan of Henry Gregor Felsen’s books. During the 1950s and 1960s Felsen wrote novels as well as a book or two on customizing, all aimed at boys entering their teens. As I recall, it was in his earliest novel Hot Rod that the main character took his car for a test drive with a notebook strapped to his thigh so that he could record his car’s performance as he accelerated away from town. Using a stopwatch and the speedometer, he charted increments of speed and the time required to achieve them. That obviously stuck with me. Not only do I remember reading it, but I carry paper and a pen whenever driving a car I have recently built or bought. I list every abnormality that I want to address, from an off-idle hesitation or a non-working dash bulb to a squeak or rattle. I say to myself, “The build is done. Now the real work begins.” My friend’s Fury is now entering the follow-up phase of the restoration. While his Plymouth is the same car he first bought nearly 25 years ago, it is very different than it was when he drove it last. It is now beautiful and it runs better than ever, but it will still take time and effort to identify and address all of the little annoyances that have begun to arise. He will enjoy his car for many years to come, but only if he remains committed to resolving those issues. By contrast, I have another friend who restored his Road Runner over a period of two decades. He did much of the work himself as his budget and time allowed, and it was the first build of its magnitude that he had ever attempted. Although it looks great, it has many little annoying problems. It has proven reliable, but he doesn’t enjoy driving it. Rather than accept the post-restoration blues as the final step of the process, he has grown too frustrated to work on the car. In so doing, he has allowed his disappointment to fester. Currently, he is working on a trade with another friend who owns a similar car. It may be disturbing to think that additional time and money often need to be invested into a car after an expensive build or restoration, but this essential final phase is merely the last step of the process. It is our mindset and how we approach this phase that determines whether we will be satisfied or disappointed with our cars following their transformations.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS
Inaugural B Body Festival I read about a car show on Facebook dedicated to the General Motors B Body platform. I located the promoter of the event, Ricardo Bruce West, and asked him to share some information that I could put in an article. Needless to say, I was impressed with his enthusiasm and felt that he perfectly put into words his passion for this particular ride. —Ben Notaro
Route 206 is a highway that cuts across the picturesque New Jersey Pinelands. As you travel down this road, you will find a town called Shamong. In the town of Shamong, there is a convenience store that has a gas station and dining establishment called Mighty Joe’s. Well, every Monday evening (except holidays), there is a car cruise held at Mighty Joe’s. Cruisers come to Mighty Joe’s to enjoy great home-style food, conversation and a laidback atmosphere. MJ’s proprietors Larry Valenzano and his wife Barbara also treat each cruise participant with a homemade treat at each event. The cruise runs all year long and the fun starts at 4 p.m.
I put together my inaugural “B Body Fest” in Philadelphia at Fairmount Park. B Body is the GM B platform for the 1926-1996 Chevy Impala SS, Chevy Caprice classic, Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Fleetwood. The most popular to many is the ‘91-’96 Caprice or Impala SS. I have owned three Caprice classics since the age of 19 up until now, at 31. I have been a fan of the cars since my teenage years – I got my first Caprice back in 2005 and joined a local B Body race team name “PhaSSt” which stands for Philadelphia Area Super Sport Team which was started back in 2004 by a group a local guys with ‘91-’96 Impala SS and Caprices. PhASST is a team of guys who share the same love in racing and driving B Bodies. The ‘91-’96 Impala/Caprice/Buick Roadmaster is loved by many people across the United States and globe. The B Body community is very big, and in many states, people have large meets to get owners to come together and share the love of these cars. In the Tri-State area, there has never been a meet for the B Body lovers, so I decided to start one. Because so many people are on social media, I was able to reach out to get many to come out and enjoy the first event on Aug. 7. Park entrance, food and drinks were free for participants, along with free prizes and trophies. The event had 25 to 30 cars and around 50 attendants. One car owner flew in from St. Louis, Mo., as well as a group of guys who drove from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Needless to say, people really enjoyed the event and are looking forward to next year’s show.

Car Show for a Cure Car enthusiasts are as passionate about helping worthwhile causes as they are about enjoying their hobby. A perfect example of this is the 5th annual Car Show for a Cure. Over 150 rides of all makes and models came out to help the Sarcoma Foundation of America in their quest to raise funds to help find a cure for this disease. This show wouldn’t have been complete if it did not have some great entertainment, and that it did. The group Mystery Machine and tunes by WVLT 92.1 FM’s own DJ Pepper Paul made sure that music constantly filled the air. A huge Chinese Auction was featured with gifts for every age. With lots of vendors, a fine location at Washington Township High School in Sewell, N.J., and the support of the car community, Car Show for a Cure promoted awareness and raised funds for a worthwhile cause. If you would like donate to the Sarcoma Foundation check out carshow4acure.com.
Some people, after working on cars all day, like to go home and take a break from car activities. Let’s face it, working on classics and preparing rides for the quarter mile circuit can get a bit time-consuming. However, there is a fellow that just can’t seem to have enough hours in the day to work and play in the car hobby. Many people know Dan Murphy as “Hot Rod Dan.” Dan is constantly staging car cruises at his business and surrounding businesses as well. If there is a cause to raise funds for, Dan is ready to help. Here are a few photos from Hot Rod Garage’s twice monthly cruises in West Berlin, N.J. Just goes to show you that cool rides are not just a fun activity but a true passion.

26th Annual Downtown Millville Car Show Every car show has its own personality and each year for 26 years the city of Millville has put on a really great car show. These past two years the city has teamed up with the Cruisin’ Classics Car Club to put on an event that fills the center of town. This show draws hundreds of rides that look right at home in the quaint avenue of shops and eateries along the city’s main thoroughfare, High Street. The sounds of a super DJ Chris Randazzo (WVLT 92.1 FM) filled the air with music that brought one back to the good old days. There was no lack of food and vendors at this cool car gathering. And in spite of a very hot summer day, the cars and spectators came out to enjoy a fine show and community gathering. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro 10

Cruising on the Radio Remember when the radio was the main source of entertainment for listening to the latest news and music? The radio was and still is our link to many fond memories. There are some guys who just enjoy their hobby so much that they take to the air waves to continue the old school on air tunes and talk. Yours truly (Ben Notaro) and long-time car guy John Quinn have teamed up for the past seven years to host a radio program called Show and Go Garage. It’s all about cars and fun. John Quinn travels to a garage to interview an enthusiast on the spot and I have a guest in the studio. The neat thing about this program is that it all takes place on the local oldies station WVLT 92.1 FM. We aren’t the only guys at the station that like cars. Several of the station’s DJs are certifiable car guys and they also play the tunes from the ‘50s and ‘60s. The radio is still a means of enjoying the oldies and getting the word out. Just look at us, two long-time cruisers part of a team that is helping the tradition stay alive.

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey Gang, I would like to start off by saying that I truly commend all the cruisers who endured the awful heat and humidity this summer and attended favorite car events. It’s been a long time since we have experienced this kind of weather, but through it all you guys showed up to support the many local organizations and their causes. I’m sure “thank you” doesn’t seem like a lot, but we all do appreciate your dedication. Since this is the last issue for 2016 let me wish all the cruisers and their families a joyful and safe holiday season. Also, I would like to send our sympathies out to the Hemple family on the loss of Pop Hemple. Another true pioneer of our hobby – may he rest in peace. There are many subjects that have been discussed over the years that involve our car hobby but this new modern car era has presented new questions as to the direction we may be headed. Modern muscle has been on the scene for several years now and as time goes on, manufacturers will continue to mimic the old with the new. There are many points of view about the new modern muscle and their place at car shows. Firstly, thousands of builders across the country have taken old rusty iron, and spent years and money to fabricate and build a 40, 50 or 60-year-old vehicle and bring it back to life. This is a labor of love and a preservation of our history of which we grew up with. When we were young, we too walked into a showroom and ordered a new Mustang, Camaro, Charger, or whatever and proudly showed it off to others. We also bragged about its horsepower and how fast it would be in the quarter mile. Fast forward to today. Many younger adults, probably some older ones too, are walking into a showroom and buying a new Mustang, Camaro, Charger or whatever and also proudly showing it off. All right, I hear you, they didn’t restore it, but neither did we back then. We added mag wheels, headers, changed the cam, used different gears just to soup it up. These modern cars in 40, 50 and 60 years from now will also be iconic. These cars may be factory-made but it will be the changes, super chargers, air intakes, fancy wheels, etc., the owner makes that will give them their place in history as well. Should modern muscle have their place at local car shows and cruises? The answer is clear: absolutely. We all need to remember that this is a hobby and a labor of love for the automobile. Does it really matter which vehicle we love? We need to encourage the younger generation to appreciate the automobile no matter what it is or what they buy. Think about this: one day when we are not around anymore and nobody wants our hot rods, where might they end up? Might it end up back in a barn for years covered up never to see the light of day again? This could happen until it is found and the resurrection will start all over. Fifty years from now our current modern muscle may also be found in a barn, one never knows. So the bottom line is: treat all cars equal, keep the passion alive so this hobby can continue into the future. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about fun! Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

Salute to Our Veterans Cruise This gal has had a fabulous car show season so far this year. I have met some amazing people from all over the state. It’s been great participating in many car shows and cruises and the cars I am seeing are simply gorgeous. There is still much more in the season to see. I’m always impressed by the dedication and time the car clubs devote to their events and charities. Car clubs really do so much for their charities. One example: the 9th annual Salute To Our Veterans car cruise on Aug. 28. It was held at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland. The event was put on by two car clubs, the Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club and the South Jersey Cruisers Association as well as car enthusiasts DJ Steve Tatz and the Fox family. They welcomed over 450 cars that day. D.J. Steve Tatz from Cruisin’ 92.1 radio was there playing some groovy music. I had a fun time talking with some of our veterans. They are really a special group of people. I even got to be a flag girl for the veterans’ wheel chair races. The motorcycle club the Legion Riders from Somers Point, N.J., supported the veterans that day. They donated $500 to the veterans’ home. There were over 100 motorcycles in attendance whose riders came out to support a great cause. Your truly was able to raise nearly $200 with the help from all the generous donations from the car community. Donations and an art auction helped raise funds that went to the vets, too. Keep up the great work, car community. Believe me, it doesn’t go unnoticed. Thank you members of Nostalgia Knights, South Jersey Cruisers and Steve and Mark for putting on a great event. A huge thank you to Lisa Williams the Activities Director at the veterans home for letting us have a show there. P.S. Visit me on Facebook and don’t forget to like me at “Trixie Cherrybomb.”

CRUISING 101 Hi Gang, Well, this summer has been unique at best, with super hot days, floods and now the threat of hurricanes. Fun for those planning events, huh? The Inter-Club Meeting for 2017 is in February at the Hilton in Newark, Del., with the date TBA. At $15 per person, it’ll start with coffee and include breakfast. I’ve said it before and I’ll mention it again – none of us are getting any younger. In fact, a lot of our members have gone to that big cruise in the sky. One person was Tom Hemple, Sr., “the Mayor” from a family of motor heads, loved by all, and you could not ask for a nicer guy. We should all be so lucky at 97, like him, to still be doing burnouts. I picked up something at his recent funeral that I’d like to pass on to our readers. The author is unknown. Mechanic’s Prayer Though I walk through the valley of broken parts, I shall fear not one thing Because thou wrench and ratchet they comfort me Thou prepare a lift in front of me in the presence of broken machines Thou anointest my hands with grease, my tool box runneth over Surely fixed cars and many scars will follow me for the rest of my life And I will dwell in the garage until my time comes. I thought that was about the neatest thing I’ve ever heard, and very respectful for anyone in our hobby. There are shows this year running up until Thanksgiving with something happening every weekend, so don’t put the toys away – there’s still a lot going on. See you cruising,

here is something about a car show that brings out the “inner American” in us. These cars are very special and they were manufactured in a time when America was at the pinnacle of all that was good, powerful, successful, and profitable. These cars bring back memories of an America where the wealthy drove the high-end models of the three major automobile manufacturers and the average working man had a car offering for his/her occupation or status. Now getting back to the “inner American” thing. If you talk to car owners, you will more often than not get a history lesson on their car. That could include how rare it may be and how many units were made. They might tell you about how it was a first year for certain production options or a specially-designed model for a salesman in a business coupe to an executive in a large “look at me” land yacht. These guys usually beam with pride because they know that their ride is uniquely American. When I talk about my ’63 Vette, I get to tell about the first Stingray made by Chevrolet. I’ll also get to razzle dazzle people with common “first” Vette to have independent suspension and so on. I really believe that our classic rides bring out a patriotic pride that say “cars from back in the day in USA” in big proud letters. So when you go to a car show and take the time to talk about your ride or talk to the owner of an America car, whether it be stock, custom, rod or rat, you know that its roots started right here in the best country on the planet. That, my friend, will be your “inner American” feelings on display. Department of Oops: The article on Under the Bridge mistakenly gave me credit for the photos. The credit belongs to South Jersey Street Legends member and good guy Dennis Alston. Department of Health: Last issue I jokingly said wear car wax in the sun if you did not have sun block. I received three emails about people personally winning trophies for best finish…hmm.
