Sharing Our Passion with the Older Generation By Frank Adkins

A

nother birthday has recently come and gone. Although I am not bothered by the fact that each year seems to pass faster than the previous one, I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to reflect on where I am on life’s timeline. Of course, none of us know how far our own timelines will extend, but I think it’s a sure bet that I am well beyond the midpoint of my own timeline. Inexplicably and unwittingly, more than a decade ago I somehow managed to sidestep any midlife crisis that might have come my way. Perhaps that’s an indication of inner peace and acceptance of my lot in life, even if it didn’t seem that way at the time. As I reflect on the years that have passed and take note of where I am today, I am fortunate to have few regrets. Life has never been easy and I have endured my share of setbacks, but I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped and tempered me, the opportunities that have come my way, and the wonderful people who have made my years so rich with memories. Despite my chargeahead nature, life has, for the most part, ignored my plans. Thinking back to the vision of the future I held more than 30 years ago, I am not at all where I thought I would be. For that I am glad, because I now realize that despite my efforts to the contrary, somehow I have wound up exactly where I belong.

6

Of course, automobiles have comprised the very fiber of my being from my earliest days. Cars have been my hobby since I was a teen, and all three of the careers that I have enjoyed have been directly linked to them. The world of automobiles has also brought me into contact with countless like-minded individuals. Scrolling through my list of Facebook friends, nearly all of our connections were made through cars. When I was a young man, I cruised Main Street in Newark, Del., until it became more of a social happening than a car-lover’s mecca. I also frequented what might have been the first cruise spot in the area at The Porch restaurant in New Castle, Del. The car shows that I attended were always focused on the cars, and that held true as other cruises, such as the Fox Run cruise, sprang up more than a quarter of a century ago. Lately, however, I have observed a shift. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older; maybe it’s because we are all getting older. My busy schedule and the uncooperative weather this season have precluded me from participating in many of the events that I wanted to this year, but at the few shows I have attended, the gatherings seemed less about the cars and more about the people.

The author’s father stands proudly by the Spyder.

Recently I took my two older grandsons (ages 9 and 11) to the Soul Riders’ show at the Hearth Restaurant in Odessa, Del. We arrived late and mingled with the folks in the parking lot. Only when the day drew to a close did it occur to me that we hadn’t made the rounds to see all of the cars present. Not looking at all of the cars would have bothered me when I was a younger man. Today, however, I see it differently. Mingling with friends means more to me than seeing every car that shows up. It is our vehicles that bring the members of our community together, but the relationships and friendships we forge are what bind us for life. As our timelines finally do run out one by one, it is heartwarming to see friends pay tribute to those who have passed by attending the services in their special vehicles. Yet, I see another trend. Nearly all of us became “car people” during our formative years as a result of a particularly strong memory involving a particular car. Because cars are an integral part of our daily lives, nearly everyone has memories of a certain car even if those memories failed to ignite the automotive passion within them. In recent months I have seen several accounts of grown children tracking down the car (or one similar to it) that their fathers drove when they were young men. The children secretly purchase the car, restore it if necessary, and then present it to their father. Such stories are rife with emotion, usually evoking tears from the old men and the grown children alike. During the years my parents dated, my father had a ’57 Plymouth Belvedere, which he later traded for a ’57 Fury. Although he had the Fury for less than a year, the memories he made with that car could fill a lifetime. Being in college at the time, when the transmission began to fail, he traded it on a nearly-new fuel efficient ’60 Corvair. It was this car that he drove back and forth from my grandparents’ home in Salisbury, Md., to school in North Carolina and to visit my mother in Wilmington, Del. It was also this car that my parents drove as they began their life together as a married couple.

In the fall of 1977, when I was twelve, my father spied a ’63 Corvair 700 coupe on a local used car lot. Its maroon paint had been overtaken by surface rust, but it had low mileage and it ran quite well. I remember him discussing it with my mother. To her chagrin, he bought it. The plan was for it to become a father-son project, but that never happened. Two years later, they traded it in for a new Volkswagen Rabbit. I was heartbroken, and I think to some degree my father was too. I am now much older and wiser than my father was at the time. Today I realize that, “I don’t care. Do whatever you want!” was merely an expression of exasperation and not at all the approval for purchase that he had taken it to be. During the four decades since then, I have harbored a desire for a first generation Corvair coupe. My father’s ’63 coupe had the base engine with a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission. Admittedly, it was a slug compared to his friend Randy’s ’64 Monza coupe with a 110 HP engine and fourspeed manual transmission. Although I have always been a “Mopar guy,” the want for a Corvair persisted. More than a year ago I began perusing Corvair ads. It was my goal to take my father for a ride in an early model Corvair coupe while I still had the chance. It’s not that I thought Dad was going anywhere anytime soon, but one never knows about these things. He hadn’t driven in many years, so presenting him with a Corvair of his own was no longer an option. This would be my car, but one that we would enjoy together. As I learned about these cars, I decided that a ’64 was the year I most desired. That was the last year of the early body style, but the ’64 models received a bump in engine displacement as well as a somewhat improved suspension. On a springtime Monday morning I spotted a ’64 Spyder on eBay. The Spyder is the turbocharged version, which didn’t interest me, but the rest of the car looked great and it had a four-speed. More important, my wife said, “I like the color. Buy it!” I clicked the Buy It Now and left the mandatory deposit. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is—that old adage echoed in my mind when I went to fork over the remainder of the cash and pick up my new purchase. The car was not as described and there are some underlying issues that had not been disclosed. Clearly, the seller and I had different definitions of the term rust-free. I could have walked away and forfeited my deposit, but I didn’t. Is the car worth what I paid? Probably not, but, I also knew that I would have to invest more into a lesser car to bring it to a comparable condition. Furthermore, I could make this car roadworthy quickly. I weighed each of these thoughts while looking the car over, but then it occurred to me that my real motivation in obtaining this car couldn’t be evaluated by an appraiser or a collector car price guide. Purchasing this particular car might not be a wise decision from a monetary standpoint, but I felt that it was the right decision. In the weeks that followed, I made a number of minor repairs and tracked down several parts that were either damaged or missing. Then, on Father’s Day weekend, I drove the Corvair to my parents’ home. They both raved over the little coupe. Although my mother never cared for my father’s ’63 coupe, she had fond memories of his first Corvair. Later in the day I took my father for a ten mile jaunt to my sister’s place for dinner. The whole way he gushed about his memories of the ’60 model he had owned more than 50 years prior. I want to share this car with my father often, but I haven’t decided if we will keep it indefinitely. It turns out that my wife is rather indifferent about the little coupe. While I really like it and enjoy driving it, I’m not sure that it really fits me. As a close friend once said about a Chevelle that he kept for only a short time, “I bought it, but I never moved in.” Even if we take a bath on this car, I will not regret buying it. Some things are more important than money. My father’s excitement was worth far more than any monetary loss we might suffer. I know he won’t be around forever, but if it brings him joy, the money was well spent.

Patriots’ Pride Car Cruise

All GM Car Show

July 4th is associated with the birth of our great nation — a nation founded through the dedication and sacrifices of our patriotic forefathers back in 1776. What better way is there to honor our nation’s 242nd birthday than to have a super cruise? The members of the South Jersey Cruisers Association car group decided to change their car show into a car cruise at Uncle Ricky’s Outdoor Bar and Grille. The result was a 200-plus turnout of cars on a picture-perfect summer day. The spirit of a celebration filled the air along with the tunes of WVLT 92.1 FM’s own car guy and DJ, Pepper Paul. Proceeds from this July 4th weekend event went to benefit “Pennies for Puppies.” This will provide a bulletproof vest and maintenance costs for the City of Vineland, N.J.’s newest police K9.

Let it be known that the bowtie crowd means business when it comes to all things General Motors. Take for instance Lakes Corvette Club out of Medford Lakes, N.J. These guys and gals really appreciate all rides made by General Motors. The club teamed up with Elkins Chevrolet in Marlton, N.J., for an all-GM-powered show. The show covered the range of the General’s rides from Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Pontiac. If it was GM or powered by GM, Elkins Chevrolet was the place to be. Lakes Corvette Club is a group dedicated to the plastic fantastic Corvette and they also showed their passion for rides by General Motors at their show.

B Body Fest

Located in Elmer, N.J., the Kountry Kitchen is a restaurant that has been around for over 50 years and has that early-Americana home style feeling. The members of the AACA chose the Kountry Kitchen for a car friendly gathering. Cruisers enjoyed a pleasant summer late afternoon relaxing at the restaurant and sharing time with fellow cruisers. Cruising music from a live band filled the air as guys and gals relaxed in easy chairs. It was a nice cruise at a South Jersey landmark and the cruisers also enjoyed dining on some great vittles.

The GM B Body is the quintessential large American ride. When it came to comfort, style, performance and all good things in a big package, the full size GM rides had it all. For the third year in a row, this cool event was promoted by two dedicated B Body enthusiasts: Bruce Porter and Randy Hyman. These large-body aficionados held the event in Penny Pack in Northeast Philadelphia, a new venue from the original one held at FDR Park in South Philly. Rides that represented the B Body included the Chevy Impala, Caprice, Box Chevys and Buick Roadmaster. You know these rides are cool to drive and that owners enjoy them for all of their amenities when participants travel in from Atlanta, St. Louis, New York, Delaware and beyond. These cool cars were manufactured up until 1996. But make no mistake: The B Body enthusiasts will make sure that these rides will continue to be appreciated for a long time to come.

Salute to Our Veterans Cruise 2018 Cruisers always take time to remember the veterans who through their time, energies and sacrifices have allowed us to enjoy the many freedoms we have. The Veterans’ Memorial Home in Vineland, N.J., was the location of the 11th annual “Salute to Our Veterans Car Cruise.” A fine summer day saw 421+ rides and 152+ motorcycles come to honor those men and women who reside at the home. The cruise featured live entertainment and rocking music by DJ Steve Tatz. A special thanks goes to “Trixie Cherrybomb and the M80’s” pin-up girls for sharing their time at the event. All proceeds for the day benefited veterans who reside at the home. The South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Club, Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club, DJ Steve Tatz, The Fox Family and Cruisin’ 92.1 FM Radio teamed up to make this a special day to honor real American heroes — our veterans. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

INCH FORD REARS

Christmas In July The Soul Riders Auto Club (SRAC) held its 10th Annual Christmas in July — er, aka Christmas in August show — because of rain on Aug. 5. The show was held at The Hearth Restaurant in Middletown. The SRAC has been doing this run since it found out that the Nemours Hospital starts to run low on toys and other items for patients that were donated in December and needs replenishing in the middle of the year. This year Santa (Ken Lester) stopped by the show to hand out candy canes and hugs to the car people attending the show. Also stopping by and enjoying the festivities was State Senator Stephanie Hansen. In her comments she mentioned how she missed her 1980 Camaro. The SRAC uses funds collected from registration of cars during the season and donations to purchase items for the hospital in December after Christmas. Then a lot of good folks bring toys and others items to the show. After the show, and escorted by six New Castle County motorcycle officers, 35 cars delivered 19 wagons full of toys/other items to the hospital. Then the group joined hands and gave blessings over the toys, blessed the children and their parents in the hospital, blessed the police officers and finally blessed the staff at the hospital. The day was topped off by the group at the hospital having ice cream and water ice. Another successful day for the Soul Riders Auto Club and Nemours Hospital for Children. — Text by Tony Lewis, photos by Thomas Mack, Jr.

BLOCK BLUEPRINTING NOW AVAILABLE! Hi gals and guys, Can’t believe we are coming to the end of our car show season. It has definitely been a very hot, humid and rainy summer. As car gals and guys, we have learned to adapt. We bring our pop-up tents, coolers, chairs and sometimes even battery-operated fans. I have attended a lot of shows this season like I had hoped. I traveled a lot, too. In my travels, I noticed that all of us still have the same thing in common. We are keeping the car culture alive. From the very young to the very old, we love our cars. But for the people who aren’t in our car community that come out and visit with us at our shows, they need to know this: Yes, we love cruising in our cars and we also love people. When you see us going to different venues our purpose is not to slow down traffic, it’s to go to a new place, hang out with new good people, talk cars or pin-up fashion and contribute to a great cause. Just think about this. We take the time to enjoy life. We slow down, sit down and look around at how beautiful people can be simply enjoying other people’s company, unplugged in a busy world.

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

I’m getting better and out more, though I’m still avoiding high temps and rain. I even had my Caddy out at times this summer. Over the summer, a few events shut down early because of the heat, which makes sense. To risk the health of spectators or participants is not an option just to get the event in. We as “car people” are lucky. Our hobby can be either an expensive or cheap hobby. Saying this, one must keep in mind that the person with a “rust bucket” is just as proud of it as the person with the frame-off restoration. I know, opposite ends of the spectrum. But think about it— we all do what we can in our present situations. We all dream about our vehicles and things we would like to do to them but money, family, time and ability factor in. We are all getting older. As for myself, what I could do just a year ago, I cannot do now, or don’t want to attempt. I know I used to do my own oil changes, but now I let someone else do them. My time is worth more than the $20 that it cost. So, what I’m saying is this: Next time you see someone at an event with an imperfect vehicle, there may be a story or reason to go along with it. The owner is still a member of our hobby, regardless of the condition of their ride! There are still many events yet to come this year. And don’t forget our InterClub Breakfast Meeting on February 10, 2019, at the Christiana Hilton in Newark, Del.

SHIFTINGGEARS By Ben Notaro • red63vetnj@comcast.net The cruising and show season of 2018 has been full of events able to keep us car enthusiasts busy on a seven-day-a-week schedule. Cruises seem to be everywhere, and they usually end up being social occasions where cruisers can come out and relax. Then there are the car shows. Most, if not all car shows, are designed to raise money for a given cause or charity. Their intentions are noble indeed. Car clubs were once the main source of car shows for cruisers to come out and show support. Today, it seems that there is a car show for a cause that pops up nearly overnight. This is OK for the car show crowd, but it poses a concern for event scheduling. Now, as the guy who seems to be on the media side of the hobby, I receive numerous comments about the multitude of shows and, in particular, the dates that seem to be colliding with one another or are just down the road from each other. This can be a sticky situation, especially for established shows that go against a pop-up event. It seems many want to profit on a show, from church groups to knitting clubs. Well, that could be bad when they do not coordinate their dates. I seem to hear this more often and my advice is simple: If you see a pop-up show that is advertised for a few weeks or months, it may be a good bet to encourage these groups to check their dates on the many sites that list shows. They may be a stone’s throw away from an established event. While I’m on a roll, another topic that crosses my desk via e-mail and Facebook messages: multiple groups having an event at the same location. Let’s face it, some locations are very accessible and have a high visibility factor. But when numerous events are held by different groups at the same place it can create an identity concern. May I respectfully suggest that the original group be notified not for permission but as a courtesy? There are still many uncharted locations for cruises and shows. These comments are not a Ben thing. But I hear about them many times in the course of the season and I’d like to bring them to the table when there are concerning issues in our hobby. Well, that’s a wrap for me for the cruising season of 2018. I truly wish everyone a great balance of the remainder of the year with car fun and good health. Department of Good Cheer: I know it’s early, but time flies. Enjoy the holidays at year’s end!
