CHANCE ENCOUNTER My memorable meeting with the Allison racing team Left to right—Me, Billy Messinger, Paul Giroux, and Jim Dunford.

By Frank Adkins Photos provided by Frank Adkins

T

hrough years of participation in various auto-related events, I have met several famous people including Richard Petty, Herb McCandless, Ronnie Sox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Linda Vaughn, Bill “Maverick” Golden, and Dennis Gage. In the late 1990s, because we competed in One Lap of America (which rose from the ashes of the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, more commonly known as the Cannonball Run), my buddy Steve Gray and I got to know its primary organizers, Brock Yates, Sr. and Brock Yates, Jr. Of course, meeting celebrities at events intended to provide fans with opportunities to do so is anything but happenstance, but it is somehow comforting to discover that these larger-than-life figures are actually friendly people. That was certainly the case with both of the Yates men.

6

But what about those unplanned meetings with famous folks? I once saw Stephen King riding his motorcycle through an intersection in Millinocket, Maine. Although I have yet to actually meet him, I like knowing that he enjoys “regular guy” stuff. My wife, Kristy, and I met Henry Winkler at the old Borders Books location near Newark many years ago. Granted, he was there for a book signing, but it was before his scheduled speaking time, and he was killing time while waiting. Kristy and I didn’t know that a special event had been scheduled for that day. We had stopped in merely to purchase a gift card for my mother. Winkler was quite personable, and he chatted exclusively with the two of us for several minutes before jumping onto a table to stand and address those who had come to meet him and to buy his books.

Me with Auto Doctor shop owner Paul Giroux in front of the two-car enclosed trailer.

Billy Messinger and Don, the man charged with displaying Bobby Allison’s car.

My first random celebrity encounter occurred in the spring of 1985 when I was just 19 years old. I had recently graduated automotive school, and I was working as a mechanic at Auto Doctor, a two-bay gas station on Naaman’s Road. Weeks earlier, I had moved to a room in the basement of a friend’s house in Claymont. It was the second rented basement that I had called home. The spring NASCAR race in Dover was a few days away, but my schedule didn’t allow time to attend events such as this. I worked six days a week, and I did side work in the evenings and often on Sundays. My bushy red hair had grown much too large because I simply didn’t have time to get it cut. Furthermore, my living expenses, tool payments, and student loan debt kept me broke. I couldn’t afford to go to a stock car race. Even going out for a nice lunch was a too-rare occurrence. So, it was a special happening that on this beautiful spring day, my friend and coworker Jim Dunford and I went to nearby Stanley’s Tavern for lunch. There we met up with our friend Billy Messenger, owner of Messenger’s Tow Line, the towing service that we used. As we pulled into the parking lot at Stanley’s, Jim and I spotted Bobby Allison’s stock car parked near the door. It was the first stock car I had seen up close, and I was intrigued by its sanitary, yet bare-bones, all-business appearance. A guy wearing a Miller racing jacket, who introduced himself as Don, approached as Jim and I looked it over. When I asked if it was a real race car, Don pointed to a place near the driver’s foot well where the tubing of the roll cage had been damaged in a crash the previous year. “Since it couldn’t be raced again, we re-skinned it and now we use it as a show car,” he explained. He was part of the Allison crew, and it was his job to haul the show car to pre-scheduled locations to display it prior to each race on the NASCAR circuit. Bobby Allison, David Pearson, and Richard Petty were all childhood heroes of mine. Each year through the early and mid-1970s, I watched ABC’s Wild World of Sports’ coverage of the Daytona 500. Coincidentally, Brock Yates Sr. was a regular commentator. Prior to that day, I had never seen a NASCAR race in person, nor had I ever seen a stock car up close. But there I stood, in the presence of a car that had been driven and crashed by one of my idols—a household name who was a mainstay of NASCAR royalty. Don asked if we knew of a place nearby where he could have the trailer repaired. One of the leaf spring equalizer bolts on the large two-car enclosed hauler had been worn nearly in two, and he needed to have it replaced before it failed. Jim told him to bring it by our shop after work that night.

The Auto Doctor building sat on a triangular lot at the intersection of Naaman’s and Darley Roads. This was prior to the widening of Naaman’s Road, at which time the structure was leveled. The cramped lot was further encumbered by the gas pump island. When Don arrived that evening, he parked the trailer on one side of the island. He had to back the race car outside in order to lighten the trailer so that our jacks could lift it. Then he disconnected the trailer from the four-door Chevy pick-up tow vehicle. While Jim and I worked on the trailer, Don drove to the Philadelphia Airport to pick up Davey Allison and his then-wife, Deborah. Meanwhile, the shop owner, Paul, talked with the throngs of folks who stopped by to take pictures of Bobby Allison’s car. In addition to working as a mechanic, Jim was a talented photographer. He called his wife, Cheryl, and asked her to bring his camera equipment as well as their kids, Jeremy and Stephanie, to the shop. Once we had finished our work on the trailer, Jim took several photos. Cheryl and the kids left before Don returned with the Allisons. They took Jim’s cameras and lenses with them. At that time, Davey was an up and coming driver—a star in the making. He had been racing successfully in the ARCA series for a few years, and that year he began driving in the Busch series. Despite his notoriety, he was friendly and humble. He struck me as a true southern gentleman who was genuinely grateful to Jim and me for our after-hours efforts. Tragically, eight years later, he succumbed to his injuries following a helicopter crash. Don paid the bill and hooked up the trailer. He loaded the car, and then he and the Allisons headed for their motel. Jim and I closed up the shop, but as we were about to leave, the telephone rang. Don and the Allisons had made it to the bottom of the hill on Naaman’s Road when the clutch in their truck failed. We called Billy, who hauled the Allison rig back to our shop. The next morning, Jim brought his camera equipment back to work. Rather than have us repair the truck, the Allison team wisely opted to have it fixed by a company that offered a nationwide warranty. As I recall, Davey and Deborah rented a car and drove to Dover International Raceway. They paid Billy to use his rollback to take Don and the race car to each of its scheduled appearances that day. But first, Jim saw to it that we staged several photos with the Auto Doctor crew, Billy, Don, and the race car. Although we didn’t find out until after the race, the Allison crew had seen to it that there were race tickets on reserve for Jim and me at the gate. It is reassuring to find that our favorite celebrities are truly good people despite their fame, and that they appreciate the efforts of us everyday folks.

Patriots’ Pride Cruise

American Big Bore: No Substitute for Cubic Horsepower

Many of us look forward to celebrating our nation’s birthday on the 4th of July, so much so that we make a weekend out of it. The South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Club recognize America’s birthday by hosting their Patriots Pride Car Cruise. The event is held on the spacious grounds of the Saint Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church in Vineland, N.J. Despite threatening skies, 126 cruisers came out to enjoy a day of cars, cruisin’ music and Greek food. Yes, the all-American hot dog was on the menu, too. A highlight of the day was the presentation of a painting of the church created by local automotive artist Jim Solomon. There were plenty of door prizes and good feelings of camaraderie among the very varied array of cars. From cool Volkswagens to traditional American cruisers, it was a day to enjoy our nation’s birth and a day to enjoy the great freedom of expression we car owners have in our rides.

The sound of an unbridled, loud, kick-posterior American car engine is a special kind of music to us car aficionados. The South Jersey Region of the Sports Car Club of America has a class in their racing lineup dedicated to American muscle. This class is the American Sedan. On a steaming hot day in July, the club held their Jersey Devil U.S. Majors race. One of the classes of the event featured the American big bore. As you may have guessed, the category consists of pure adrenalin-producing power comprised of cars from Mustang, Camaro, Cadillac, Corvette and Firebird. Now, for the record, these are not cars right off the showroom floor. They are race-prepared and proof that performance has not been left out of racing from the American point of view. These cars held to the road course like glue and performed on a track that had temperatures nearing 130 degrees. It was a hot summer road racing event with a class for domestic rides spelled with three letters…USA!

Christmas in July Car Show The thought of Christmas on a hot July day may seem a bit usual. But July is just as good a time as any to have a Christmas-themed car show. The members of Saint Padre Pio Parish held their third annual car show at the church grounds. Having a show in the agricultural region of Vineland, N.J. on a summer day truly paints a pretty picture. This show saw nearly 100 rides of all makes and models. It also featured a fine breakfast buffet. Winners of the show were given special plaques and gift cards. No show is complete without music and John “The Friar” from WVLT 92.1 FM oldies station played the tunes. We all know any Christmas celebration needs an appearance by Santa Claus, and he was on hand to share the day. Matter of fact, Santa even stopped by my car to listen to my wish list. Every time there is a gathering of cool car owners, it’s always a great time. Especially if its celebrating Christmas in the middle of summer.

It all started when one young cancer patient set up a lemonade stand in her front yard. Alex, just four years old, raised $2,000 in that first fundraiser. By the time of her death in 2004, Alex had raised more than $1 million and created a national movement. In August, members of the car community attended the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Car Show at Applebee’s in Williamstown, N.J. The inaugural event attracted a very respectable number of cars and a few motorcycles. too. The car community can always be counted on to support a worthwhile cause as they displayed by showing up at Alex’s Lemonade Stand at Applebee’s.

For more than 11 seasons, the Soul Riders Auto Club has held car shows in which toys and other items are collected and donated to children at the Nemours A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children. Though this year’s event, held in mid-July at Hearth Restaurant in Middletown, saw temperatures above 95 degrees the spirit of generosity wasn’t diminished. Donations were generous and later delivered to A.I. DuPont, courtesy of an escort by New Castle County Police. Soul Riders Auto Club thanks all who accompanied the club to the hospital to deliver the gifts as well as the support it received from the South Jersey Street Legends and the County Seat Cruisers. — Text by Cruising Staff, photos by Thomas Mack, Jr.

12th Annual Salute to Our Veterans Cruise The veterans who have served our country are a very special group. Their sacrifices have allowed us the opportunity to enjoy this fun hobby of ours. The Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club, South Jersey Cruisers Association Car Group, WVLT 92.1 FM radio host Steve Tatz and the Fox family have teamed up for the past 12 years to present a cruise dedicated to the veterans who reside at the Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, New Jersey. This event drew 453 cars and 100 motorcycles on a day that was picture perfect for all to enjoy. One of the highlights of the cruise was cheering on the veterans who participated in the wheelchair races. Everyone who participated won a trophy. These guys and gals are the embodiment of the American spirit. The cruisers were most generous in their donations that went to veterans who reside at the home. A special day for a very special group of Americans and the cruisers came out in force to say, thank you, for the service to our great country. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Mr. Bill’s Car Cruise Every cruise has its own personality. Regardless of the location, the one constant in every cruise is food. In Winslow Township, on Rt 453, 73 South in the southern part of New Jersey, there is a restaurant that holds a cruise every Wednesday evening. Now before one says it’s another ice cream stand with a food menu, one should recognize that Mr. Bill’s is noted for homemade food with no fast food items are on its menu. The only things fast are the fine rides that come each hump day for a friendly gathering. Mr. Bills also has themed events — for Mustangs, Corvettes and such — as well as occasional live entertainment. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Pin-up Point Of View

Hello, my loves! Wow! I can’t believe we are coming to the end of our car show season. This year has been amazing. I put what feels like a million miles on my truck. I’ve met so many cool people in my travels. I love the car culture. You guys and gals are the most generous and giving people. You help out other clubs and their charities and you never leave anyone behind. As you know, sometimes our rides don’t behave, and that’s including mine. It doesn’t stop us from enjoying cruising the roads with our clubs and friends. It’s about taking in all the beautiful views and getting away from life’s stress—even if it’s for a day.

THE PRESIDENT’S FORUM Hey Gang,

Would like to recognize two gentlemen who passed away back in August who contributed to our car hobby in many ways. Tony Fichera, a member of the Knights as well as many other clubs, was a good friend who took his clubs seriously. Tony was an active member who always helped. Also, Bob Gelsi, another friend who some of you may remember for Gelsi’s Mustang World in Vineland. Both men made their contributions to the hobby in different ways and will be missed. I along with many others extend our deepest sympathies to the families of both men. Now that we are nearing the end of the season, this is the time when most clubs are disbursing the monies collected throughout the season to their charities. As many of you know there are thousands of charity organizations out there and car clubs being non-profit give the money earned to help these organizations. Many of you already know that the Veterans Home in Vineland is the Knights’ biggest beneficiary. We also help the children at St. John of God (Deptford, NJ) with our toy drive as well as 20 or so other organizations. All of the established clubs in the tristate area are doing the same thing and it’s well advertised where their donations are going. They may be different charities, but the bottom line is we are doing it to help organizations in need. With that being said, there are still questions out there as to where money collected at shows really ends up. Well, all of the reputable clubs that I know show where their donations are going either through newspaper articles, websites, social media, or whatever. All the guys and gals who support your car shows deserve to know that their money is going for a good cause. If you’re doubtful, just ask? We also want everyone to realize that clubs have expenses in order to host these events. There is a portion of monies collected that clubs will use to continue their operations for the next events. At no time, that I know of, are club officers or members paid for hosting a car show. Can it happen, might it happen, will it happen, well I most certainly hope not, but I have seen my share of unsavory actions. Food for thought Keep On Cruisin’ Baby…Bill Nese

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

Weather is changing, a chill is in the air. Of course, after 30 plus days of over 90 degrees, an 80-degree day can be a relief. I’m lucky to have my own tent, which is good for shade but this year the air was humid enough to cut. Then there are the rainouts. But even after all that, I’m finding the show season went by fast. Time to get our “toys” put away for the winter, talk to Santa, and hope for more toys! Clean out the garages, get rid of the mowers and weed wackers, and make room for the cars again -- and most of all, check out the heaters. Ah, the fall events. Crisp air, sweatshirts, etc. It’s that time again, kids back to school, time to sit back and reflect. My kids are all grown up and have their own families. Work? Hell, retired and relaxing and bored with more errands than ever. The Golden Years, right? This has been a weird show season for me. My Caddy’s tranny went south and once that was fixed the rear went. So now, with a good running 425 cubic-inch motor, I’m ready to see how the beast drives without a whiny noise at various speeds. Actually, it is a nice riding vehicle. Without my Caddy truck, I had no way to get from show to show with all my junk, if you know what I mean. Now I’m looking forward to the return of the Pumpkin Run. Debbie and I visited with event founder Harry Fleming a couple of weeks ago. A lot of memories there. I also want to say, treasure every day you have with friends and family as you get older. You will discover you never expected to be at the age you are now. Never realized that most of what you did in your “younger days” would affect you so much today. Some of the stunts we all pulled, we’ll never live up to. We are losing to many of our friends.

See you all cruising!

One of my favorite sayings is “I remember when.” As I recall, most car shows that I attended nearly 45 years ago did not have catchy names. Usually they were named after the host location held or the business involved. Rather typical car show names such as Central Yugo of Tontoville Car Show and Sam’s Burger Place Car Show were the norm, but then I began noticing clubs and promoters giving their events titles. I guess it was (and is) an attempt to distinguish the event with a unique name. Let’s face it, it can be a bit hard to remember events with basic names. Naming events with catchy titles seems to evoke a feeling. One that stands out in my mind is the Pumpkin Run. Here’s an event that does not have any car reference in the name, yet most any car guy or gal in the South Jersey region knows the Pumpkin Run. So, once again, as I have done in the past, I spared no expense to research event names. This comprehensive quest to find car cruise and show names that are well known yet do not necessarily reflect a car event has led me to share some titles I have found in various advertisements. Here are five creative event names: 1. Dead Man’s Curve 2. Pumpkin Run 3. Lead East 4. Memories in the Grove 5. Chicken Run As you can see, the event name dose not really include a car theme, but you can bet car guys and gals in these events’ respective areas know these gatherings. As we slowly round out the Endless Summer of 2019, the most important thing to remember about all car show and cruises is a word that can easily be inserted into every title. That word is “Fun.” Department of Cheer: Best wishes for an autumn season and beyond. Final Thoughts: As the year slowly comes to a close, take the time to reflect on the fun and good people you have encountered this year. I extend to you and yours a beautiful upcoming holiday season.
