ar people tend to be sentimental folks who don’t always operate within the constraints of conventional thinking. On the whole we are intelligent, rational and responsible, but there’s that “other side” of our collective psyche that seems irrational to most folks—those who don’t “get” the car thing. It would be difficult to justify to your financial advisor why you pour money into that old car which occupies your garage, wouldn’t it? But truth be told, your financial advisor likely has a vice or two of his own, such as a penchant for travel or watercraft. Even those everyday people who don’t understand our car addiction usually have addictions of their own such as sports, NASCAR, horses, etc. Nearly everyone is into something, but what remains constant is that the connections are purely emotional. We seek those things that bring us joy. As an older, wiser man once told me, “Everybody needs a reason to get up in the morning.” I know I am not a conventional thinker. Too often, the crazier an idea sounds, the more appealing I find it. I do those things that make me happy as long as they don’t impact others negatively, and I’m fortunate to have a wife who thinks the same way. So when I proposed the trip I’m about to share with you, Kristy understood fully. She wanted no part of it, but she understood. The story begins in 1994, three years before Kristy and I met. My first wife and I were on our first real vacation. She wanted to go to Cape Cod and I wanted to go to Maine, so we compromised; we spent a few days in each location. Strapped for cash as young couples often are, I hitched our hand-me-down camper to my built-from-junk Dodge truck and 6

northward we rolled. I didn’t know it at the time, but it would be our only vacation. We separated the following year. When I was 14, I had spent a week canoeing the rivers and lakes of northern Maine with my Boy Scout troop. There has never been a place to which I have felt more connected. It’s strange to feel homesick for somewhere that I have never lived, but there is no other way to describe the feeling that washes over me when I think of Maine’s beauty. Now, 15 years later, I was returning for the first time. At the campground near Bangor we gathered several flyers and tri-folds that advertised area attractions. One pamphlet was from a gentleman who offered evening moose watching tours. He operated out of a wilderness outfitter’s store in Greenville, approximately 70 miles north-west of Bangor via Rt. 15. Halfway to Greenville we passed a long covered bridge spanning the Piscataquis River just to the left of Rt. 15. Of course we stopped for photos. Right then I decided that I wanted to take a picture of my ’68 Dart on that bridge someday. The Dart has been in my family since my aunt and uncle bought it new in the fall of 1967. Originally equipped with a 273 two-barrel and column-shifted automatic transmission, it served them well until 1977. Then my oldest cousin Becky took the wheel. She and my cousins Richard and David ran the car hard for the next four years until the timing chain jumped. The resulting engine damage sidelined the Dart. I acquired it in March, 1983 during my senior year in high school. I transplanted a Slant Six and three-speed manual

transmission, followed months later by a modified Slant Six and a four-speed. It remained in that configuration until two years ago, when a mild 340 supplanted the Slant Six. My Dart saw me through automotive school, several jobs, a couple of girlfriends, and the transition into adulthood. It has been with me through every phase of my life ever since. Today it can easily transport me back to my younger years. The longer I spend behind the wheel, the younger I become. It was another decade before I returned to Maine, and by then Kristy and I had been married for several years. She had never been there, but she fell in love with the natural beauty just as I had. Since then, we have returned as often as possible—usually every year or two. We have explored most of central Maine, and we have visited that same covered bridge a number of times. A sign identifies it as Lowe’s Bridge. Still, I dreamed of photographing the Dart on the bridge, but we didn’t want to drive it there on vacation. The rustic motel where we normally stay has a long, steep gravel driveway. We also drive dozens of miles of dirt roads to see moose. We are not willing to curtail our usual vacation activities for fear of stone chips, but we’re equally unwilling to damage the car. In recent years we have discussed relocating to Maine. We have wanted to take a wintertime trip there to see the land at its worst, but we have never been able to coordinate our vacation time near the holidays. Consequently, last winter I spent a few days there alone. While I was there, I looked at several properties for sale. Certain listings mentioned that those properties were seasonal, and soon I learned what that meant. Generally, any road that is paved is considered a main road, and they are well-plowed. Many of the dirt roads are cleared of heavy snow, but others remain untouched. The properties on the unplowed roads are simply not accessible during the winter. Several months and many trips later, we found a parcel on a paved road that we liked. Coincidentally, it is about five miles from Lowe’s Bridge. We settled in September, and our transaction was completed via e-mailed forms and overnight mail. In fact, we never actually met the realtor, settlement agent, or the seller. Because the realtor’s office was located 40 miles away in Bangor, we couldn’t assume that he had removed his “for sale” signs afterward. If the signs remained, they would present an open invitation for others to explore the property. Early in the last week of October, the weather forecast called for a stretch of clear weather spanning that Friday afternoon through Sunday. I scheduled Friday as a vacation

day, and I headed for Maine early that morning alone in the Dart. Because I was driving solo, I saw no need to book a motel room. I hoped to reach Low’s Bridge in time to snap some photos while there was still sufficient daylight, and then I would go to our property. I would back the car off the road, remove the signs if they were still present, and spend the night in a sleeping bag on the ground. The next morning, I would head for home and arrive by evening. If I encountered trouble along the way, Sunday would be my fallback day. Driving 1400 miles alone in a 50-year-old car for more than two days seemed just crazy enough to be appealing. At exactly 5 o’clock Friday morning I rolled out of our driveway in southern Delaware. Traffic moved well until I reached gridlock in northern New Jersey. Connecticut also held the expected traffic headaches, but otherwise I made good time. As is my usual practice when traveling, I maintain a brisk pace and I stop only when the gas gauge dictates that I do so. Consequently, I reached the Maine state line by mid-day. Because central Maine is both north and east of the mid-Atlantic region, the sun remains in the southern sky during that time of the year, and it sets earlier than it does here at home. I reached Low’s Bridge at about 3 p.m., but the shadows were already growing long. I snapped several photos of the Dart and then continued to our property. A few days’ worth of storms had cleared out that morning, but not until five inches of rain had fallen. I backed into the gravel clearing that had been a logging road some years earlier, only to discover that I had parked in standing water. Obviously, I couldn’t camp there. I decided to drive to Merritt Marina, located on the bank of Sebec Lake, which was at the end of our road less than a mile away. There I took several more photos. Finally, I headed to Bangor to take a couple of shots of the car at Stephen King’s radio station. By then, the sun hung low in the south-western sky. Afterward I drove a few blocks to McDonald’s for dinner and to decide where to spend the night. I should mention that the car sparked conversations at nearly every gas station where I stopped. Men, women, and teenagers all shared enthusiastic comments about it. One woman asked to take a photo of it. As I drove through Skowhegan, two boys about 10 years old bolted across their front yard toward me and shouted, “Nice car!” as I rumbled past. I was shocked! Halloween was a few days away, but it was being celebrated early there. As I sat perched on my stool at the tiny bar-like table inside the Bangor McDonald’s, children in colorful costumes exchanged chatter with their parents over Big Macs and Happy Meals. I was savoring my McChicken when I remembered that there was a rest area on the interstate nearly 200 miles to the south and not far from the New Hampshire state line. I decided to go there and sleep for a few hours before continuing my trek home. However far I made it that night would be that much less distance I would have to cover the next day. Furthermore, if I encountered trouble, starting for home early might prove beneficial. When I reached the rest area, I wasn’t sleepy. I filled the tank and pressed on. A couple of hours later I stopped at the first rest area on the Massachusetts Turnpike for a cup of coffee, but again I kept rolling. From Massachusetts I took I-84 through Connecticut and into New York. Construction on I-84 and a detour on the Sawmill Parkway slowed my progress, but I continued toward the Tappan Zee Bridge. I decided I would stop for a nap at the first rest area on the Garden State Parkway; however, as I neared it, I still wasn’t tired. In fact, I didn’t become drowsy until I reached Milford, Del. With only 10 miles to go, I yawned and settled in for the last short stretch. Although I hadn’t intended to complete the entire trip virtually non-stop, that’s how it turned out— even crazier than I had planned! I reached our home at 4:48 Saturday morning, having traveled 1394 miles in 23 hours and 48 minutes, alone, in a 50-yearold car, and without incident. Furthermore, I had removed the “for sale” signs from our property, which was my justification for the trip. But those accomplishments paled in comparison to having finally achieved a goal that had remained on my bucket list for 24 years. Sometimes, it’s best to ignore conventional thinking and strive to fulfill those persistent dreams no matter how crazy they seem. Acting on those deep-rooted, longharbored desires can prove more gratifying than you think. 7

There is something special about the shore points. For example: the smell of the salt air. Then there is the sound of the roar of the ocean waves as they gently roll in and out. One can also hear the sounds of high power engines and smell of the sweet fragrance of high octane fuel and fun. Now where can all of this be found, you may ask? This weekend car blast takes place at the Wildwood, N.J., Boardwalk Classic Car Show that has taken place in late September for nearly the past 30 years. The car show drew near one thousand rides for a multistate area, from street rods to street machines to full blown customs. One can also say that the weather gods were shining on the shore with absolutely perfect weather for everyone to enjoy. You may want to circle your calendar this year for the show in September and book a room early. Fine rides and South Jersey seashore fun is a high performance weekend on anyone’s calendar.

One of the best ways to blend delicious cultural food and cool classic rides is to have a car show. Now you say that food is a given in most car events but when the car show is held at a Greek church hall where the cuisine is homemade and there are lots of fine rides, then you have a real event. Even our motorcycle friends came out to enjoy the day along with the car crowd. The third annual Gyro Fest and Car Show was held at Saint Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church last September. This event turned out to be a charm with great attendance by the car owners and a chance to enjoy Greek dishes that made one feel like they were in the Mediterranean. One lucky raffle winner even won $500 toward the purchase of a new set of tires donated by a local tire distributor. It was a great event to bring out the car and savor the flavor of some old-world cooking. It doesn’t get any better on a mild autumn day.

Car Show for a Cure

Fabulous ‘50s Doo-Wop Fest Car Show

One can count on car enthusiasts to be as passionate about helping worthwhile causes as they are about enjoying the car hobby. One example is the 6th annual Car Show for a Cure. More than 180 rides of all makes and models came out to help the Sarcoma Foundation of America in its quest to raise funds to help find a cure for this disease. Speaking of rides: This year even saw some airplanes, full race cars and some miniature go-cart rides. This show would not be complete if it did not have some great entertainment, and that it did. Tunes by WVLT 92.1 FM’s own DJ Pepper Paul constantly filled the air. A large Chinese Auction was also featured with plenty unique items to bid on. With lots of vendors, a fine location at Washington Township High School in Sewell, N.J., and the support of the car community, Car Show for a Cure promoted awareness and raised funds for a worthwhile cause. Doo-wop is a term that brings to mind songs of the 1950s and early ‘60s. It was a revolution in music that created an era of classic American songs and it made the tunes that came over the car radio tell a story from love to lost love. It was also a time of the emergence of the great American automobile. There was—and is—something special about pressing that button on the car radio or tuning in that chrome station knob to find that just-right tune. If you lived near an ocean, cruising to the shore with doo-wop tunes playing was a natural. One community at the Jersey shore is still churning out doo-wop, even in this day and age: Wildwood. Each year in mid-October this resort town holds a Fabulous ‘50s Fest where you can hear many original recording artists like Frankie Avalon, The Duprees and many more. You can also enjoy an outdoor festival and a cool car show. Cruisers can relish the sight of fine rides with the songs of classic rock and roll. As they say in the radio business...the hits just keep on comin’ – Cruising style.

Home of the Free, Because of the Brave Car Show

Octoberfest Car Show & Beer Garden

Car events toward the end of a calendar year will be especially likely to donate to charities or individuals in need. The proprietor of auto repair and performance shop Hot Rod Garage chose to remember the military personnel and their families. Dan Murphy is the main man and owner of Hot Rod Garage, and wanted to help fill the pantry of the military families by organizing a car show at Rack’s Lounge and Restaurant in Williamstown, N.J. This day saw a nice turnout of rides of all descriptions, and owners donated their entry fee and also brought food items to be given to the food pantry at Fort Dix, N.J. A true feeling of giving to assist those who guard our freedoms and also assist their families was in the air. Car guys and gals from many car organizations seem to never forget the men and women who allow us to be the home of the free—because of the brave.

Autumn has a special quality of its own with a crispness in the air and chill that comes with the setting sun. It’s also a time where car events have a seasonal change of greenery or an autumn theme. One such event that heralded in autumn was staged by the fine members of the South Jersey Camaro Club. They held their Octoberfest Car Show & Beer Garden event at the Tilted Kilt Restaurant in Sicklerville, N.J. This event brought out nearly 100 rides of all descriptions. There were plenty of trophies available, too, and car owners were even treated to food discounts at the restaurant. A special highlight of the show was the vocal talent of one of the SJCC’s member singing along with the DJ. His talents were impressive. All in all, a fun time was had by all. The enjoyment of the car hobby is always in season.

Get revved up for brews and car fun at Delaware Park’s spring show

Hood Art Michelangelo had his Sistine Chapel, where he would lie on his back and render his exquisite art onto the ceiling. A true artist in his own right. Can you imagine if Mike was alive today and a certifiable car guy? Chances are he would be one heck of an airbrush artist or pin striper. Well, the hood of a cool car is always a great “canvas” for that modern day Michelangelo and these artists crank out some eye-popping work on a car’s hood…top, bottom or both. Speed into the new season with Delaware Park’s annual Spring Car Show on Saturday, May 12, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The show is open to all years, makes and models in the following categories: rat rods, muscles, modern muscles, imports, trucks, hot rods, tuners, pro street, exotics and classics. Hey Gang, Welcome to 2018! It seemed not that long ago we were leaving the 20th century and here we are, 18 years into a new one. For those of us born in a time when sock hops, hot rods and good ‘ole rock and roll were in, well, all I can say is, times have changed. I suppose this is why we love our hobby so much, it is a great reminder of our past and how we grew up. I’m reminded of my years growing up watching my father and some of my uncles tinker on cars, motorcycles, or for that matter, anything that had a motor. I learned many things back then, not because I was forced to, but because my Dad’s interest seemed to carry over to me. I guess it was in the genes. Sure, we played baseball, football, rode bikes, went to school, watched Andy Griffith, and so on, but we never spent hours on a telephone, iPad or computer. Oh, that’s right, we didn’t have those things! Like so many of you who grew up in those days, we learned by watching, listening and just simply hanging around the backyard garages. When I was 5-years-old, do you think I knew a screwdriver from a pair of pliers or a ratchet from a wrench? The simple answer is no, but by the time I was 8, every time Dad needed something I knew exactly what he wanted. It took a while but I learned them all and what they were used for. All this carried into fixing mechanical parts on cars, trucks, lawnmowers, go-carts, mini bikes and so on. By the time I was 10 or 12, I was taking small engines off mowers and go-carts and changing them for bigger motors to go faster. There are many of you out there that fall into this same scenario. Fast forward to today. What happened? Most young people have chosen different paths. Unfortunately, many of our youth don’t even come out of the house, simply because they are preoccupied by cellphones, computers, reality games – and don’t forget school work. Is that still in the equation? Those of us in this hobby love it because this is our past, but it is not the past of the new generation. We have been preaching for years to get young people involved in this hobby so that it can continue on. I agree one hundred percent. There is a certain percentage of youth out there that do admire our passion for these cars and would love to be involved, however, without the help of their elders, their pockets aren’t deep enough to be involved. Might there be a solution to this? I certainly don’t know. Heck, there are many things in this hobby that I can’t afford. On meeting nights I look out at the club members that make up our club and ask myself: Who will be there to take my place when I’m ready to retire as president? I see many members, however, I don’t see a willing member to continue the club in the future. So, whenever we can find young adults that have a desire to get involved, we should welcome them, teach them and bring them to a show. Most of all, please introduce them to me so I can sign them up with my club and prepare them for the president’s chair when I retire. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about having fun Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

Gasket Goons Car Show This gal took a cruise to Springtown, Pa., to check out the Gasket Goons 7th Annual Hot Rod Bash last fall at Silver Creek Athletic Association. The show was open to 1969-and-older car and trucks, and as I traveled over the grassy hillside I could see more than 700 vehicles. I checked out all the cool rides along with the swap meet, vendors, live music, and food. For Cruisers with kids, there’s a great playground for them, too, plus they can also enjoy valvecover races. The track for the races is from the 1960s. This event boasted a very cool bicycle show, too, with more than 30 bikes. The pin-up pageant had about 15 beautiful gals. A New Era for Automotive Vocational Education

got involved with my local vocational school around 2014, when I heard the auto body class at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology was canceled. After speaking with the superintendent in August, I was told it wasn’t coming back. By Christmas of that school year my son and I attended their school board meeting. I was asked to join their advisory board, which I did. After the first meeting, I realized the school gives standardized tests to students coming to their school, so I said, “If you’re relying on a written test...the perfect students for auto body probably would struggle to pass your test. That’s me and most other guys in the auto body trade. Give me the kid who is not necessarily test-oriented, and I will make that kid a superstar in this trade. Their attention to detail is perfect for this trade.” The board lowered the entry score by two points and they said I was right because they were flooded with viable applicants. I increased the enrollment in the auto tech class by 33 percent – they had to hire another full-time instructor. My son and I are both graduates of that school and love the skill and knowledge we left there with and are very grateful for it. When I joined the advisory board, I was the fourth member—and obviously the new guy. Curt Silver, the instructor, told me about a website to check on school programs, AYES.org. I called four schools with very successful programs and their instructors all said their advisory boards had 25 members or more. I got in touch with a few friends of mine in the auto trade who joined me, and we became the largest advisory board in the school. Things started to happen: My friend Bill Baitzel is the factory rep in the tristate area for Hyundai USA and the company ended up donating a brand new Hyundai Genesis. My son and I wanted to teach the kids about auto restoration and our efforts got a major boost when Diane Fitzgerald, from Restoration Preservation Mentorship

(RPM), flew in from Chicago to inform the administration at our advisory board meeting about a successful program at East Valley Institute of Technology in Arizona. After that meeting, the school allowed us to start an after-school car club…but there was no money and a teacher would have to stay after with us. The faculty volunteered, and my son and I donated our time. I brought my own personal projects and supplies and materials. The project that I brought was my ‘71 Chevy pickup and the kids assembled a brand new bed and sanded all the parts. They also cleaned and painted the frame, radiator support and inner fenders. The students also learned panel alignment and the updating of door mechanisms. The school year ended before we could complete the truck, but at least it looked complete for the photo-op at the end of the year. This year’s project is a ‘69 Chevelle, which needs every piece of metal. It’s very rough, so I hope they have a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Our advisory board at ACIT has been asked to join the Salem County Vo-Tech (located in New Jersey) advisory board as well to help with their auto program, which we did. I’m fortunate to be serving with many smart guys from this trade. Soon, we meet with Senator Steve Sweeney, an advocate of vocational education. Let me start by saying Happy Cruisin’ New Year. With that said, I’ll put aside my cardboard party hat and noisemaker and get into my column for 2018. I’m not going to remind you about events that are happening this year, I’ll leave the search for fun things to you. My goal for this first, 2018 words-of-wisdom column is to make a suggestion to those who stage events. My advice: Think out of the box. So, what do I have in mind? Well, when planning events, include some suggestions for cruises or shows to be held at non-traditional locations. I have been to a car show held at a cemetery (in an open, unused field adjacent to the actual cemetery) and it was interesting to walk around an old burial ground that had been in existence for nearly 200 years. Now, having started the ball rolling, here are my 10 out-of-the-box ideas for 2018: 1. Breakfast run to an off-season restaurant out in some seldom-traveled location. Start early and catch a sunrise if possible. 2. Go to a race that represents another segment of the hobby. Sports car races, circle track, drags, even slalom events. They are all neat outings. 3. Host trophy events with non-traditional awards. How about: “Likely to Get a Speeding Ticket,” “Most Recycled Parts,” “Best Thing Hanging from a Review Mirror,” etc. 4. Take a kid on a cruise. Invite a child and an accompanying parent to ride with a member on a cruise. Encourage kids to have their photo taken in your ride. 5. Impromptu cruise. Tell everyone you know to cruise the local main street at a certain time and day. No organized event—just come and hang out like the good old days. There is an event in Delaware that does this called the Flash Cruise! 6. Host a Piston Toss—engine pistons tossed for distance. Neat car show idea. 7. Host a junkyard parts identification event with 10 parts—identify the make and model. 8. Frozen t-shirt block breaking: Race to break or thaw a block of ice that houses a frozen t-shirt. Cool idea for a July event. 9. Fan belt toss – toss the belt and try to ring the traffic cone. 10. Valvecover races.

I hope these ideas can add a new twist to events and outings for our fellow cruisers. It can’t hurt to try them at least once. Having said that, enjoy the car season of 2018.
