When Accessorizing Makes Sense POWER OPTIONS BECOME MORE APPEALING AS WE GROW OLDER By Frank Adkins

W

hen I was small, I looked up to my father, and I saw him as the pinnacle of strength. It seemed he could lift just about anything, and he could remove my bicycle tires from the rims with his bare fingers. I know most of us regarded our fathers in a similar manner, but as I got older, I realized my father really was stronger than most other men. When he was in his early forties, he was diagnosed with arthritis in his shoulders. Even so, his shoulder pain didn’t seem to slow him down or curb his choice of activities. He still cut and split firewood on the weekends, and he enjoyed woodworking when time allowed. It came as a shock one day less than 10 years later when were driving in my sister’s ’69 Dart with slow ratio manual steering, and I discovered he could no longer maneuver the car into a parking space by steering hand-over-hand. It is inevitable that our bodies will break down over time. Even so, we are living longer than ever, and most of us enjoy active lives for far longer than folks did in previous generations. But as we age, we have to make allowances for the issues that arise with our bodies. Commercials for special canes, braces, walk-in bath tubs, and chair lifts appear daily on televisions around the world. And, if we are to remain active in the car hobby, it is natural that our vehicles reflect the changes in our bodies as well.

More than 10 years ago, my friend Joe was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. It soon became apparent that he could no longer enjoy his ’55 Ford police car, which was equipped with manual steering and brakes and lacked air conditioning. He replaced it with a ’75 Plymouth Fury that was equipped with those accessories, and which he also transformed into a police car. Although he eventually succumbed to his heart condition, he was able to enjoy the hobby with his friends for several more years. In just the last two years, three of my car friends have had open heart surgery. Two others have had shoulder replacements, a couple have had knee replacements, a couple more have had hip replacements, and I have lost count of how many have had back surgery. Clearly, we aren’t kids anymore. When we were younger, power options weren’t all that desirable to many of us, and some of us thought nothing of removing them. I have converted at least half a dozen cars from automatic to manual transmissions. I made a habit of removing air conditioning and eliminating power brake boosters, and over the years I have replaced power steering with manual steering in nearly a dozen of my own cars. Of the ten ‘60s and ‘70s cars that my wife and I currently own, only her ’73 Road Runner has power steering, power brakes, or air conditioning. We will retain those options only because the car remains largely original and it was built with those features. Nowadays, with an aging old-car populace, the trend has reversed. Joe opted to replace his car with one that had the options he wanted, but many of us keep our cars and add the options we desire or need. One of my buddies is rebuilding the ’67 Chevelle he bought in 1969. Although it will be essentially a caged, street-legal race car, he is adding power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning. As a member of the joint replacement club, he plans to drive the car long distances regularly so he wants to be comfortable. Another friend does mostly local driving, but his deteriorating shoulders have made it necessary for him to retrofit power steering into his Road Runner. Several other friends have added air conditioning to their cars because they can’t tolerate the heat like they did when they were young. Of course, the aftermarket has made the addition of such options easy by offering complete kits consisting of high-quality components made specifically for your particular model and power plant. Air conditioning kits with modern compressors, power brake booster and master cylinder assemblies with updated rubber materials, and power steering kits complete with vastly improved latemodel steering gears, pumps, hoses and all of the related brackets and pulleys, are but a few mouse clicks away. Those of us with back issues or who have accumulated extra weight with the passing years are happy to discover comfortable seating options. In addition, many fiberglass kit cars that are based on early model cars and trucks with cramped interiors are designed with additional room in their cockpits for leg comfort and to accommodate the extra girth that many of us acquire as we age. Although genetics have dealt me quite a blow when it comes to arthritis, I

must admit that I have been in denial when it comes to my future mobility. X-rays have confirmed bone injuries and severe arthritis in my hips as well as arthritis in my shoulders and knees. Still, I prefer cars with manual steering, brakes, and transmissions. My rationale has been that I simply push through the pain and refuse to give up. Some folks call me a die-hard, and my wife says I’m just plain stubborn, but I believe in the adage, “Use it or lose it.” I still hike portions of the Appalachian Trail several times a year, I go junkyarding whenever time permits, and I still do all of the things that I have always done despite the pain. I believe this mindset is what keeps me going, and it continues to promote my good quality of life. But during a nasty fall on ice last March, I injured my right shoulder, which made it impossible to drive with a manual transmission for a while. In the months that followed, I regained some use of my arm, and eventually I was able to drive a manual again. I couldn’t shift quickly, however, and moving an old Hurst shifter across the neutral gate and through the detent for reverse required me to use both hands. I nearly regained my full range of motion, but only a small portion of my strength. I could not raise a garage door with my right arm, nor could I remove or install a wheel from a car by grabbing it at four and eight o’clock positions like I normally would. To cope with my situation, I developed work-arounds. I would jack up the car until the wheel was a couple of inches off the ground. Then, after removing the lug nuts, I would hook my toe under the tire to support its weight. I would use one hand to steady it as I dragged my heel away from the hub until the tire cleared the wheel opening. This might sound extreme, but I’m really no different from many of the guys who I worked with in the automotive field or those who work in other fields with physical demands. We hurt ourselves, then we find ways to keep working while we heal. Eventually, my condition stopped improving, so I finally sought medical attention. An MRI revealed extensive tendon and muscle damage in addition to the arthritis that had been there all along. As I write this, it has been a few weeks since my surgery to repair the damage. My arm is in a sling, and it will be for a few more weeks, but I have been cleared to drive. With my right arm incapacitated, I cannot operate a vehicle with manual steering, but I have proven that I can drive with a manual transmission provided I shift with my left hand. With any luck, my shoulder will regain most of its strength and mobility, but this experience has forced me to consider how my wife and I will enjoy our cars after we are stricken with permanent physical limitations. At the moment, her Road Runner is our only old car that I can drive easily. As an aside, I plan to replace its antiquated power steering system with a modern power steering kit for more precise handling and better road feel. Although I have no immediate plans to load up our other cars with the optional equipment that I used to remove, I can now empathize with folks who add certain power options to their vehicles so that they may enjoy them for years to come. I’m thankful for a strong aftermarket that makes these accessories so easy to source and install.

OWNING A VINTAGE POLICE CAR PROVIDES A UNIQUE THRILL By Lou Sitaras

A

s a youngster, nothing is more exciting than watching an emergency vehicle go by. The questions begin immediately: What happened? Is there a car accident? A fire? Is someone sick? You look around for signs of smoke as you see the regular cars and trucks pull off to the side of the road while the emergency vehicles speed on by. It’s a sight I’m certain has led youngsters to dream of becoming firemen or police officers or paramedics. As adults, not much has changed. We still look and wonder as emergency vehicles come whizzing by. Some of us even foolishly follow fire trucks to the scene of a blazing fire. We can’t help but slow down and look as we drive by a bad car accident surrounded by emergency vehicles and wonder what happened. It’s just human nature. It’s who we are. For me, even as a kid, I distinctly remember when my hometown of Eddystone Pa. would get a new police car. I was 6 years old in 1968 when the police department acquired a beautiful dark green Dodge Coronet. In 1970 they traded it in on a new Dodge Coronet with the wildest front end I’ve ever seen on any car — let alone a police car. Even today, the 1970 Dodge Coronet is considered a unique milestone vehicle. Afterwards, the Eddystone Police Dept. switched to the Plymouth Satellite and by 1974, the Plymouth Gran Fury was the vehicle of choice before I moved away.

They say it takes a Mopar to catch a Mopar and that’s exactly what happened in Catawba County, North Carolina.

8

My house at times looks like a community police department right out of the past with a 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury and a 1962 Chrysler Enforcer parked out front.

In 2005, the opportunity arose for me to purchase my very own retired emergency vehicle — a 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury that was originally part of the North Carolina Highway Patrol. It was a lifelong dream and bucket list item that finally came true. The car underwent a complete restoration from 2014 thru 2017 and since that time, it has started a second career showcasing the heyday of Mopar’s prime police pursuit years in Memorial Day and July 4th parades as well as local events throughout the tri-state area. For me, the greatest thrill I’ve had with my police car was Christmastime in 2020. The Aston Township Fire Company skipped their annual Santa Claus fire truck ride due to covid. My friend and former guest on 92.1 FM, Dave Kelso, asked me to lead a parade with lights and sirens going while Santa waved at the residents and children from the back of Dave’s 1970 Dodge pickup truck. At the last minute, two Aston Township police vehicles joined in the parade and residents were treated to a bit of Christmas joy during a very bleak year. In 2021, I was asked by my friend Gloria Brazell of the Upper Chichester Township Recreation Committee to escort Santa from the township building to the Chichester Winter Wonderland Holiday Display. An Upper Chichester Township police car joined us and once again, me and my passenger, Mrs. Claus, played by Renae Applebaum, brought Christmas joy to many children who were overwhelmed to see Santa come visit them. I am often asked: “What’s it like to drive a real police car?” The truth is there’s no bigger thrill in the world. In the immortal words of Elwood Blues: It’s got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspension, and cop shocks. Being behind the wheel means being noticed no matter where you go. Just as with any classic car, people wave, beep, honk, yell, and give a thumbs-up. They also pull out their cellphones and photograph me as I’m driving down the highway. Stopping for gas is always an adventure as people always ask me to pull in behind them with lights flashing while they take a photo of themselves being “pulled over.” There’s no such thing as a quick stop at Wawa. Conversations abound whenever the cop car comes out. Is driving a vintage police car with all its emergency equipment legal? It’s a question that’s been asked many times and there’s no easy answer. If you go strictly by the book, the answer is no. However. and that’s a big however, most officers won’t bother you if it’s the weekend and you’re on your way to a car show or parade. Many enthusiasts cover their lights and also put a “Not In Service” decal on each side of their cruiser. I’ve personally never done that since my car doesn’t have police markings or decals. I have been pulled over only once. I was in North Carolina after a classic car tour and decided to stay a few days extra. I mainly kept to the back roads because I was aware my car was not legal and besides, I was a Yankee in Confederate territory. Sure enough, one day I spotted the local sheriff behind me in a newer Dodge Charger. I can’t express to you what a worrisome sight this was. Still, I wasn’t speeding or driving erratically. Maybe it was just coincidence that he was behind me. That is, until his emergency lights came on. That was the end of the coincidence. I found a small parking lot, pulled over, and placed my hands on the steering wheel, expecting to be arrested. The sheriff, a Jackie Gleason type, slowly walked up to my car, peered in the window, and said “Boy, I wasn’t lettin’ you get outta my county without me checking out your ride.” Whew! What followed was a 15-minute conversation of him telling me why his new Dodge Charger Hemi police car was better than mine and me explaining why my 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury with the 440-cubic-inch cop motor, cop tires, cop suspension, and broken cigarette lighter was better. It was one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve ever had in my life. As I pulled away, that 440

engine and dual exhaust roared to life and the sheriff must have loved it because the next day I passed him and he blipped his emergency lights for a second at me, as if to say “Hello.” Since the time I first purchased this car, I’ve added another to my collection because they’re just so much fun to drive. In addition to the Gran Fury, I have a 1962 Chrysler Enforcer. It was the only year the California Highway Patrol (CHP) used Chryslers, because Dodge and Plymouth made the mistake of making their cars too small for CHP specifications. They realized the error, made their cars larger for 1963, and Chrysler was out as the official CHP patrol vehicle. For those interested in the vintage police car hobby, the resources are varied and there are dedicated groups to help source items such as equipment, markings, and older-style lights. Police Car Owners of America and the Emergency Vehicle Owners And Operators Association are two of the most popular. To keep up with various vintage police car activities such as parades, many of us use the site “Police Car Events — PA, DE, MD, NJ.” My good friend Dave Casey is the administrator of the site and does a terrific job of keeping us updated on different events and parades. I have to add that the vintage police car hobby doesn’t just extend to Mopar — Ford, Chevrolet, and even AMC and Oldsmobile manufactured some excellent police vehicles over the years that are treasured today by collectors. No matter the make or the model, driving a vintage police package car is a thrill unlike any other. It’s also a tremendous responsibility because you are in a sense representing a previous era in law enforcement. It means driving cautiously and courteously and being aware that you are on display. Just like that young child whose eyes lit up at seeing their first emergency vehicle, we get the excitement of reliving that moment in time over and over again. It’s a sensation that always leaves me smiling.

Santa Claus himself gives a nod of approval at the North Pole Police Department’s cruiser that was escorting him during the Upper Chichester 2021 Christmas Parade.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Carlisle Events Roars Into Spring With 2021 in the rearview mirror, the team from Carlisle Events is full speed ahead for the 2022 season. Spring Carlisle presented by eBay Motors is set for April 20-24 and will welcome nearly 100,000 guests with like-minded passions into the Cumberland Valley to buy, sell or trade all things automotive. Spring Carlisle, in most cases, is the first large gathering of its type across the country, so it becomes a destination event for gearheads and collectors. The biggest draw is the automotive flea market where thousands of vendors sell millions of pieces and parts, merchandise, and collectibles. There are even cars for sale by owner within the car corral. In addition, the midway is packed with some of the top suppliers in the industry and is flanked by the ARMO Hot Products Showcase. ARMO is the SEMA council whose mission is to preserve and promote the automotive restoration hobby. In doing so at Carlisle, the ARMO team spotlights some of the newest and/or most popular items available for your ride. Finally, Spring Carlisle welcomes Carlisle Events co-owner Bill Miller to the stage on Friday, April 22 for his second bi-annual Bill Miller Auction. For a period of time starting midmorning, Miller, with the help of the Carlisle Auctions staff, will sell off some items from his personal collection. The Bill Miller Auction is free for all on-site guests to attend and all items are sold to the highest bidder with no fees attached.

A few weeks after Spring Carlisle wraps up, the Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals (May 1314) takes center stage. IPN is one of the most unique events in the country, as it spotlights over 2,000 cars from around the world. From popular American Muscle to obscure Asian and European imports, guests are guaranteed to see something they have never seen before. Along with the rare and unique, there are a few special displays and activities planned. Cruise to Carlisle in mid-May for a 30-year tribute to the Subaru Impreza and a feature of Germany’s most popular ride; the BMW. There are also many car clubs who gather, making Carlisle their singular meet-up spot for judged or nonjudged car show fun. Just after Memorial Day, THE Ford show of shows happens; the Carlisle Ford Nationals presented by Meguiars (June 3-5). This event hosts Ford lovers from across the country and more than 3,000 vehicles on the National Parts Depot Showfield. While there is no shortage of cars and people, another element of the fun is the staff from Ford HQ. Top level team members roll in from Michigan to host new product showcases, walk arounds and unveilings. In fact, with some new vehicle car shows canceled in and around the mid-Atlantic region, it’s reasonable to expect that many consumers will see for the first time at Carlisle, the newest and hottest rides and products coming onto the market. This may include EV components and vehicles, the latest Bronco and more.

Meet the (Car) Family So many times when we think of the car hobby we tend to think about the cars and not the owners. Well, the hallmark of our hobby is the people who make cruising and attending events fun. Their friendly smiles and good-hearted ribbing make participating at functions special. While at a few events, I decided to photograph “family” photos of some of the participants….you know…cruising family. I’m sure many will agree, our hobby is about people with cars not just cars with people. — Text and Photos by Ben Notaro

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Millville Car Show

The City of Millville, NJ celebrated a long standing car event with their 30th annual car show. This show was one that the Greater Millville Chamber of Commerce felt that the best way to share in a fun day was with a free car gathering. This was a fun day with plenty of paint and chrome, food and fun the youngsters. The car show was organized by the South Jersey Noisemakers Car Club. The SJ Noisemakers are no strangers to hosting car events and had a well organized show that went smoothly. They had plenty of trophies on hand to make many of the car owners go home with a special award. Music by Cruisin’ 92.1 FM radio personality Chris Randazzo and TV coverage by Quinn Broadcasting Company made sure that everyone got the word to share in this community event. — Text and photos by Ben Notaro

Mopar or No Car When one gets into conversations with car owners, they’ll find there is a group that is very loyal to Chrysler and often all things Chrysler. They relish the power and the uniqueness of the brand and that loyalty helped add a word to the English language. MOPAR (Mo Par) verb or even a noun. 1. A ride made by the Chrysler Corporation. 2. A very fast ride. 3. A very cool marquee. 4. A brand moniker for people who feel that there is no other car. My MOPAR has a hemi and eats all other cars for breakfast.* To my fellow cruisers I dedicate this article to you and your dedication to MOPAR. *Notaro’s Dictionary of Car Terms — Text and Photos by Ben Notaro 12

Cruisin’ In Winter During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing. Enter Tom Rightler who is the owner/operator of Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars located in Bridgeton, NJ. Rightler is no stranger to restoring muscle cars and has animpressive list of clients and accomplishments. It’s also safe to say his passion for the Chevelle served as special inspiration. While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed. Visiting a shop that specializes in classic and specialty rides is a great way keep the spirit alive and get to see another side of our hobby. CRUISING 101 H

i Gang: Well, once again, we’re at the beginning of a cruising season. It may even be with groups of people under tents at events without a mask — eating and socializing like we used to do. But we will have to wait and see. Or should I say hope? Looking forward to some local events: Mr. Bill’s weekly on Wednesday nights at Hammonton, N.J.; Mighty Joe’s Cruise Nights on Mondays at Shamong, N.J); Nifty 50’s every third Wednesday at Turnersville, N.J.; Lapp’s Dairy Bar every second Wednesday at Carney’s Point, N.J.. And, of course, The Cruise Down Memory Lane at Vineland, N.J. on June 11th. A few tips for those lucky people in charge of an event: 1. Listen to any comment — good or bad 2. Have cool water available 3. Handicap parking would be nice, plus enough parking without needing a shuttle 4. Provide a day-of-event phone number for those without GPS and those needing last-minute information. It’s unfortunate Cruising Magazine was not able to host our annual Interclub Meeting this year. But it just wasn’t feasible due to COVID. That said, please get your event information to us ASAP. You can submit it online at CruisingMagazine.net. I’m looking forward to the return of many older events sidelined last year. Events that were held had a lower attendance, but hopefully that will improve this year. Time will tell. If questions arise, give me a call or a text. I don’t know that Deb or I can help, but we will try. See you at the events,

Larry Lazareff

any of us who grew up in the days before television expanded into cable networks were mostly limited to three channels. That meant each network had certain shows that came on each week and each had its own “cult” following. A major genre of those early days of television was the detective show. Each private eye was a distinctive personality and often was associated with a special automobile. As a matter of fact, some of our fellow cruisers have gone to great lengths to keep these special rides alive today with tribute cars of the TV stars. So, yours truly decided to do some detective work of my own and research some of the cars that became as important to the TV shows as the stars themselves. Here is a list of some of the cars I remember as the one-off rides of television detectives:

• The Rockford Files

Car of choice: Pontiac Firebird Formula 400. James Garner was a cool Jim Rockford

• Columbo Car of choice: 1959 Peugeot 403 Cabriolet. Peter Falk played the ramshackle Lt. Columbo

• Starsky and Hutch

Car of choice: 1976 Ford Gran Torino. David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser were two casual cops. David Starsky and Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson seen in a red ride with a big white stripe.

• Magnum P.I.

Car of choice: 1984 Ferrari 308 GTS. Tom Selleck was a cool private eye named Thomas Magnum solving cases in Hawaii.

• Miami Vice

Car of choice: 1986 Ferrari Testarossa. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas (aka Crockett and Tubbs) solved crimes in Miami in a very Miami-type ride.

• Hawaii 5-O

Car of choice: 1964-68 Mercury Marauder. Jack Lord is a no nonsense Steve McGarrett and drove a no nonsense Merc….”Book him Danno”

For those who need to send me information, please forward to:

There were many more TV cop shows where cars have been featured as well as held an identifying role. As they would say on Adam-12…..signing out.
