THE WOMEN OF MOPAR Stories of unique individuals who have made our hobby better (Part Four: The Finale)
By Lou Sitaras Erin McCall and her cherished 1973 Dodge Challenger.
L
ast year, in 2020 B.M. (before masks), Cruising Magazine showcased various stories of unique and passionate women in the classic car hobby. Titled The Women of Mopar, the ladies featured have told their stories, in their own words, of what it was that inspired them to develop an interest in classic cars. Then the pandemic came upon us and life as we knew it was never the same. Today, we are finally beginning a return to normalcy and car shows, which last year were banished as being fraught with danger, have thankfully returned to fill our weekends with fun, friends, and familiarity. There are three women left to feature, but the truth is there are so many more women across so many marques of automobiles — Ford, Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac — on and on and on. They host car shows, repair their own automobiles, and accept the many responsibilities of being an elected car club official. They’re long overdue for praise and recognition and all of us here at Cruising Magazine are proud to showcase them. Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the final edition of The Women of Mopar.
ERIN McCALL
McCall is co-owner of Rob’s Rod Shop in Downingtown. She’s an accomplished automotive photographer and has volunteered at many car shows throughout the area. Her expertise in running a speed shop for many years has made her a specialist in working with vintage cars and conversing with the classic car community.
6
McCALL: “My appreciation of the classic car hobby started in the early 1970s amid growing up in the construction industry with International Loadstar dump trucks, Chevy Cheyenne Pickups and a Dodge Club Cab. By the 1980s I was really into GM muscle cars — especially Oldsmobiles, Buicks and an occasional Nova or Camaro. Fast forward to 1993 when Rob McCall asked me to attend the Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle (Pa.) with him. That was my Mopar moment! Experiencing all those cars and trucks on the fairgrounds for the first time was amazing and just so much to take in. We have attended every year since then, and we’ve watched that show and the hobby grow. We have owned so many classic Mopars throughout the years spanning eras from the 1940s to current modern day Mopars. My personal favorites to date, both past and present, include my 1998 Jeep Wrangler, 1973 Dodge Challenger, 1973 Plymouth Road Runner GTX and my 1978 D100 Custom Utiline (Stepside). I am excited to see what the new decade brings in the way of speed and technology while also preserving our history.”
ANDREA RIPA
I first met Ripa when we attended a fundraiser together for Delaware State Trooper Cpl. Stephen Ballard who was killed in the line of duty. Andrea has hosted many Car-B-Ques, picnics, and cruises for her Delaware Valley Mopar Association family and is an inspiration for the other members.
RIPA: “I have always been interested in cars since I was a little girl. I met Tony Ripa when I was in my teens. At that time, he owned a Plymouth Duster that I really loved
and enjoyed helping him with it. After that, he had a Dodge Demon that was one of the fastest cars around. I learned how to tune a Holley carburetor and also learned an appreciation for making cars go fast. Over the years I have owned many Mopars, the latest being a 1973 ‘Cuda 340. I am very meticulous about the way it has been built and enjoy the hobby very much. I remember going to the movies and watching car movies such as Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and Christine. I’ve always loved going to the drag races and still do. These days, I can often be found behind the wheel of a Dodge Challenger Scatpack and enjoy it so much that I’ve grown to love the modern Mopar muscle cars almost as much as the vintage ones!”
TINA REZK
Rezk is a guiding force for the PA Modern Mopar Club. She can often be found helping out at one of their many events throughout the area. She’s always the first to volunteer and is a joy to be around and talk cars with.
REZK: “My love and inspiration for Mopars has most definitely come from Bryan, who has been by my side for five years. Watching his excitement and enthusiasm for Mopars is very infectious. The members of the Pennsylvania Modern Mopar Club have embraced both Bryan and myself to the point that they have become our family. I’m so thankful to have them in our lives. I chose “Jennie” as the name for my Charger in loving memory of my mother. It most definitely was the best choice for me to honor the woman that made me who I am today. When I drive my Mopar I know she is always with me. Love my Mopar!”
With this article, The Women of Mopar series is ending. The ladies are off to other adventures and Cruising will turn its attention to others worth featuring. I watched when Mary Tyler Moore left the WJM newsroom for the last time; when Carol Burnett tugged on her ear for the last time; when Sam Malone from Cheers served a drink for the last time. I was extremely sad saying goodbye to Mary, Carol, and Sam and I feel the same tears in the corners of my eyes as I’m saying goodbye to this series. Thank you ladies: • Robin Cook • Brenda Walls • Amy Berry Bragg • Pat Murphy Tucker • Andrea Ripa
• Joy Curran • Diane Ferro • Carolyn Duhaime • Erin McCall • Tina Rezk
I would also like to recognize Jenni Romano for her devotion to the Mopar hobby. Her unwavering passion for her 1974 Dodge Charger, nicknamed Holly, is well known throughout the area after they appeared together on the automotive TV show Sticker Shock. Thank you all for your tireless work on behalf of so many classic car enthusiasts in the tri-state area. And a special thank you to so many more women who work on the front lines and behind the scenes to make life easier for all of us. Your hard work does not go unnoticed and your contributions are too many to tally. All of us at Cruising Magazine thank you for a job well done. You’re a breath of fresh air in a garage full of carburetors.

Cool Concept In Maine, ice racing proves a great way to weather winter By Frank Adkins
A
s I write this, the sun is beaming through a clear blue sky on the first day of spring. It has been a long winter and I know most of us are itching to get our cars out, take a cruise, and perhaps meet up with a few car buddies. Those who crave drag racing are rejoicing, for the area dragstrips have recently opened. This is the time of year we look forward to during those gray winter months when the roads are covered with salt. Today, however, I am with a group of car enthusiasts who are sad to see the winter end. We are at a racetrack, but it’s one unlike any in our area. I am with the members of the West Cove Ice Racing Association at their track on Moosehead Lake in Greenville Junction, Maine. Today’s event was their season finale. Greenville sits at the southern end of Moosehead Lake about 70 miles northwest of Bangor in a part of the state known as the North Woods. It’s a small town (fewer than 2,000 residents) where folks come to enjoy boating, fishing, snowmobiling, ATV riding, and other outdoor activities. Lily Bay Road runs north of town for 18 miles to Kokadjo (the sign there reads KOKADJO Population: Not Many), and it is this corridor where locals and visitors alike come in hopes of seeing the elusive moose. Beyond Kokadjo, the roads are dirt, for this is logging territory. Logging trucks are a common sight in the North Woods. Elsewhere on the lake, folks are enjoying the day while ice fishing in purpose-built huts or crisscrossing the vast expanse outside of the west cove on snowmobiles. Overall, Moosehead is nearly 40 miles long and has an area of nearly 118 square miles peppered with small islands, including Mt. Kineo. The sense of community is strong here. My wife and I have been coming to Greenville for the last 12 years or more, and we stay at the Kineo View Lodge, a rustic two8
story, 12-room, family-operated motel located a few miles outside of town. It was there last night that I learned the students at Greenville High School were having a snow sculpting competition this weekend. I stopped at the high school on my way to the racetrack. One of the chaperones told me to root for Nikki Hamilton. “She is the only girl racing. She’s my daughter.” Ice racing is weather-dependent. The ice on Moosehead typically reaches a thickness of 30 inches. This year, it only achieved a thickness of about two feet, which is still more than enough to be safe. However, rain and snow melt can leave several inches of water atop the ice. When this happens, there can be no racing. Snow covers the ice throughout the winter, and volunteers with plows create the track and pit area by plowing the snow from the ice surface. In the previous weeks, the snow was much deeper than it is today. Earlier in the day, one by one, the racers appeared in trucks pulling their race cars on trailers across the ice and into the pit area. The brands represented today include Volkswagen, Nissan, Honda, and Chevrolet. Each car is required to have a safety harnesses, a window net, a fire extinguisher, a bar on the driver’s door for side impact protection, and a support bar across the underside of the roof joining the tops of the B-pillars unless a roll cage has been added. Drivers are required to wear DOT-approved helmets. Although there is a class for those running spiked tires, most competitors rely on tire chains. The WCIRA members are focused on having fun, but they take safety seriously. As one official explained, “We don’t want anybody getting hurt. We have a tech inspection, we require safety measures, and we are also insured.”
In addition to the safety equipment required for racers, I soon learned that everybody wore cleated boots in order to have traction on the ice. I had brought my aggressive-soled, mud-and-snow boots, but I found them useless on the ice. One nasty fall convinced me not to stray too far from my car. Lesson learned; I’ll be better equipped next time. One at a time, drivers entered the track to make their qualifying runs, which consisted of a warm-up lap, three “hot” laps, and a cool-down lap. Finally, at noon, the racing began. The cars were grouped by class, with some drivers competing in multiple classes after a tire/wheel change. As with a closed-circuit road race or dirt track race, a flagger signaled the start of the race with a green flag, the last lap with a white flag, and the end of the race with a checkered flag. He stood in a tiny orange booth mounted on a trailer so that it could be removed from the ice after each day of racing. After the pace lap, the green flag fell, and the racers were off in a flurry of angry, unmuffled exhaust and ice shavings. While the cars were bunched up early in the race, only the lead car had clear visibility. As the faster drivers vied for position, the cars became spread out around the course. Everyone sought to run cleanly in accordance with the rules, though by nature, there can be minor unintentional contact from time to time. Still, ice racing is not intended to be a demolition derby, and drivers who don’t abide by the rules can be ejected from the race or suspended. Between heats, two snow plows circled the track, clearing it of the ice shreds that had accumulated due to the tire chains. As one fan explained, “Clearing the loose stuff helps a lot with visibility. Every time they race, they lose an inch or two of ice from the track surface. The chains just rip it up.” Judging by the amount of loose ice the plows cleared after each heat, I don’t doubt it. Although many of the drivers are seasoned veterans of the sport, the WCIRA welcomes newcomers. Compared to other forms of racing, the low expense of preparing a car for entry-level competition makes ice racing accessible to nearly anyone who wants to get started. For more information, see the West Cove Ice Racing page on Facebook. There, you can also access the WCIRA rulebook.
Enjoying the snow sculpting competition at Greenville High School.
Though many drivers are seasoned veterans, West Cove encourages newcomers.
The ice on Moosehead Lake typically reaches 30 inches of thickness.

Many car clubs look forward to the start of a new season and the members of the South Jersey Mopar Connection are no exception. As a matter of fact, they named their event for 2021 a most appropriate title — the Kick Off Car Show. They kicked off the season with a highly successful event that drew more than 130 cars and trucks. The seafood/sports bar Chickie’s and Pete’s in Egg Harbor Township, NJ was the host location for this gathering and the restaurant took care of the participants with food discounts and a lively atmosphere. South Jersey Mopar Connection will be hosting cruises at this location the first Thursday of each month into September. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Bob Sliwecki

i Gang: Long time, heh? Believe me, I’m bored. Went to a couple of events, one was taking place behind its location. No signs, no nothing. It would have been nice for at least one sign, like “Show In Rear.” The other event the wife and I had hoped to attend resulted in us seeing the three vehicles in attendance pulling out as we were pulling in. Well, it was a nice road trip. Meanwhile, my Caddy sits comfortably in the garage, broken down with a blown rear. No, Caddys don’t do burnouts. I suppose the 2021 show season will be unique, to say the least. Vehicles in every other parking space; three people to every 10-by-10 canopy; limited spectators — all masked, of course. But, events will happen. Meetings, let’s face it, they are not happening. With room size and attendance limited, the costs exceed the benefits. That, my friends, is the bottom line. Well, the good news is that, finally, people able to attend car events. With the restrictions being eased, it sounds like things are getting a bit back to normal — whatever that is. But, back to the shows. After a year-plus with no shows, and a year with the loss of many people along with countless other disruptions, anything close to “NORMAL” will be acceptable. See you soon at the events. PLEASE send or e-mail me your events so that I can update the calendar.

he great American humorist, Mark Twain, once commented that rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated. Seems some thought he was dying when he was very much alive. Well, that was obviously not an accurate comment about Mark Twain and the assertion can be applied to our hobby. Simply stated: No, the fun car hobby isn’t dying. One case in point regarding classic and specialty cars is sales. I was speaking to two very active and highly respected car dealers who cater to the Corvette and classic/specialty car markets. When I approached them with the question: How are sales in these pandemic times?, I expected a gloom-anddoom response. To my surprise, their response was that sales were booming! One would think that in this time of restrictions on gatherings, people would be just chillin’ out watching TV and not be too interested in specialty cars. Upon talking to the proprietors of these businesses, there was a common belief that people have come to several conclusions. Here are a few of these business owners’ thoughts: 1. Life is short and why dream of buying a fun ride? If you can afford it, then purchase one. 2. The hobby is not dead, just on a dormant/slow mode for now. It will eventually open up, so buy now and cruise when the time is right. 3. Classics and contemporary specialty cars are now selling rather quickly and the time to purchase is now and not when the supply is depleted. Everyone has a personal reason for getting into the cool car hobby. The most important thing is that the hobby is about fun — and that never goes out of style. By the way, reports of our hobby being on the decline…well, they are greatly exaggerated. Department of Health: When going to a car event, you may want to see what their COVID policy is from state to state. Department of Events: Maybe we can rate different flavors of coffee with an octane rating at cars and coffee gatherings. Department of Advertising: If you are hosting an event. Get it in Cruising Magazine. Whatever way you choose to enjoy the hobby, stay safe and have fun in the endless summer of 2021. 23
