What Makes a Successful Car Show? By Frank Adkins

6

photos by Bill McCord

T

hose of us who have been attending automotive events for decades know that some car shows and cruises are simply better than others. Even relative newcomers who have attended only a few shows realize that some seem more satisfying than others. So what qualities define a “good” car show? That question has come up in one form or another during conversations I’ve had with several car guy friends and acquaintances in recent months. Nearly all of us have been involved in organizing car related events and all of us have attended countless car shows and cruises over the course of many years. Let’s be clear on one thing—organizing a car show takes a huge amount of work and time. It is often a thankless job. It also requires a significant commitment, both in terms of time and patience, and often in up-front money. Nobody makes such a commitment with the intention of putting on a “bad” event. Even so, from the participants’ point of view some shows are simply more enjoyable than others. Car show participants also make a commitment. By simply showing up they have agreed to forfeit a block of prime weekend time in addition to whatever entry fee is collected from them at the gate. In return, they expect a few hours of enjoyment and camaraderie with like-minded individuals. What follows is a culmination of thoughts and opinions from several folks on the components that make up a satisfying experience at a car show. Organization—A well-organized event is a smooth running event. The number one complaint among participants is a lack of organization. Disorganization manifests itself in many ways including parking areas that seem haphazardly defined, activities that run late throughout the day, and event staff who seem uptight and unconfident. The number of staff should be appropriate for the size of the show. Atmosphere—Car shows are supposed to be fun! An air of friendliness among event staff is crucial to setting the proper tone as participants arrive. Staff should welcome the participants as guests and exude an air of confidence, yet at the same time be relaxed. That only happens if they know how things are supposed to run, which reverts back to proper planning. Staff members who are snippy, rude, or uninformed generate a bad vibe that will underscore the whole experience. Food and Beverage—Most of the car people I know are only slightly less enthusiastic about a good meal than they are about their cars! Whether a show is catered or held in close proximity to restaurants, many people expect to have a good meal while at a show. Furthermore, nothing compensates for a show’s minor shortcomings like good food. Music—Most car show DJs play a variety of oldies, classic rock, and even a little country music in proportions that most folks enjoy. What some DJs fail to realize is that the music is peripheral to the event. The music is supposed to enhance the show, not dominate it. When the music is cranked up so loudly that it drowns out all but the most robust of shouts, the show suffers. Music is not essential for a show to be a success. Many shows utilize no DJ at all, but music aside, it is helpful to have a DJ on hand to make announcements and keep the show moving.

Event Layout—If a car show is part of a larger event, such as a fair, many folks who attend will not be car people. As such, they have little regard for your special car and have no qualms about mistreating it the same way they do their own everyday cars. I’ve witnessed folks leaning on others’ cars, eating on them, and letting their kids climb on and even inside displayed cars! I once saw my wife nearly behead a woman who encouraged her kids to crawl inside our car and then pretended not to speak English when Kristy confronted her. These folks aren’t necessarily rude (though some are!), but I’ll call them uninformed. At large events where a car show is one of several draws, the car show should be located at an outer extreme so that non-car people don’t have to pass through the show area to move between the attractions that appeal to them. Awards—Most of us claim that we don’t need any more trophies, and that we already have enough dust collectors sitting around. Really? Come on! Even if that were true, is there anyone among us who wouldn’t enjoy winning one more? Awards don’t have to be huge or expensive. I, for one, would rather receive a small unique hand-made award than a gaudy trophy. Awards made from old engine parts are always cool. Classes—The classes or categories should be arranged in a logical manner, though this can become quite sticky as show organizers don’t know ahead of time how many of which type of vehicle will be present. This is especially true of first-time events. Participants are generally understandable, but only to a point. Organizers of small shows can circumnavigate these headaches by setting up broad categories such as Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Interior, Most Altered Suspension, and Favorite Overall, then handing each participant a voting ballot upon registering. Staff’s Cars Exempted—Have you ever attended a show that was hosted by a club, judged only by club members, and then witnessed the members of that club walking away with the majority of the awards at the end of the day? I have, and though it was many years ago I’m still miffed whenever I think about it. If a club hosts a show for its own members only, that’s fine, but if it’s open for all to attend, the members’ cars should be exempted from judging. Each should display signage stating, “Do Not Judge.” Better still is when the staff’s cars are displayed in an area separate from the main show field. Other Activities—While the draw of a car show is usually the cars themselves, it’s nice when there are activities that appeal to other members of the family. Shows that have games, entertainment, or that are held in close proximity to playgrounds, amusement parks, or shopping areas offer something for everyone. Feedback—Whether or not you deem a show a success, understand that the organizers gave it their best shot. Be courteous and thank them for their efforts. You can also offer constructive criticism and suggestions on how to improve the show in the future. Most organizers are receptive to constructive feedback if it doesn’t come across as an attack. They want you to have a good time at their show, and they want you to come back.

Restrooms—Facilities should be ample, nearby, and clean.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

South Jersey Camaro Club Second Annual All Camaro Show Camaro enthusiasts from the northeast region gathered on Sunday, September 9, for the second annual Camaro show staged by the members of the South Jersey Camaro Club. The show was held at Bennett Chevrolet in Egg Harbor City, N.J. The SJCC donated the show’s proceeds to the family of the late Millville, N.J, police officer Christopher Reeves. The bow-tie pony car enthusiasts had a great day of Camaro eye candy, music, trophies, and camaraderie. All of this and the dedication to a worthy cause made this late summer event a very special day for all. — Text and photos Ben Notaro

Mopar Mania

Mopar! Now there’s a word that our Chrysler friends know all too well. This derivative of motor and parts equals “motorvation” for high performance. While at a recent car event I noticed more Mopar rides then usual and I just knew that I had to have a Chrysler photo pictorial. So, to all of you mopar guys and gals, this page is for you. — Text and photos Ben Notaro

Nose Ornaments Early car manufactures looked for ways to make the front of a car’s hood distinctive—thus the bull-nose ornament and the hood ornament. I can only guess that the rounded-off front of the hood suggested the nose of a big metal bull. And a term was born. Anyway, here are a few bull-nose and hood ornaments. Some are quite unique by today’s standards.

Garage 5th Annual Salute to Our Veterans Cruise When taking a look at the history of the cruising car hobby, look no further than post-World War II and its returning soldiers. These guys came home ready to enjoy the things they missed while defending our nation abroad—and one of those things that many craved was the need for speed and personalized cars. Before they knew it, a hobby was born. The rest, as they say, is history. Now, many war veterans are elderly and reside in veteran or nursing homes. So how do the cruisers pay tribute to these early car enthusiasts? They have a cruise in the veterans’ honor. At least 100 motorcycles and 450 cars were driven out to the New Jersey Veterans Home in Vineland, N.J, to give our vets special thanks for all they have done for us. The event was sponsored by the South Jersey Cruisers Association, DJ Steve Tatz, Nostalgia Knights Classic Car Club, and the Fox family. — Text and photos Ben Notaro

I must tell you that I have received an overwhelming response to my last article about club members. It seems as though every event I attended since our last issue has piqued the interest of car guys and gals. Many of you have told me that some club members have forgotten why they became members in the first place. Listen folks, as I stated before, any organization that is formed has its active members…and then there are the inactive ones. You know those types—it’s like buying stock in a company. You own some of it, but never show up for the board meetings. That’s the skinny of it! Once again, we can probably continue to write about the profiles of clubs and members. However, it might be best if we saved that for a future article. Instead, I’d like to focus on another topic. As each year passes it gets somewhat harder and harder to deal with our rapidly changing economy. Frankly, cruise and show events have seen a slight decline in attendance. Additionally, this year has been extremely hot and humid—some folks that I spoke with said they simply could not sit in the heat on asphalt parking lots all day long. Obviously, I’m sure the cost of fuel had something to do with it, too, but yet another one of the big reasons I heard for this year’s declining attendance was, “I had a family commitment.” I’m sure we all have hectic schedules and try to squeeze in as much on a weekend as we can, sometimes forgetting where our priorities should be. Family commitment—hopefully we have not lost sight of that. As much as cruisers love the hobby, we need to remember that family always comes first. Probably wouldn’t be a good idea to miss out on the birthday party of a wife, sister, brother, son, or daughter—and how about the husband, ladies?— simply because you needed to attend a show. Shows and cruises will be around for a long time to come. We do not always have that luxury with family—don’t ever take for granted that loved ones will be around for a long time. Share those moments, whatever they may be, with family first. Then go cruising. With the holidays fast approaching, take the time to share as many Kodak moments as possible with your family and friends. Please remember to enjoy your holiday season safely and responsibly. All your cruises and shows will be waiting for you next year. Don’t take tomorrow for granted, and definitely enjoy every day to the fullest. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL! Presidents, if we have not heard from you, please contact Tony Sceia at (609) 839-2239 or e-mail tony.sceia@us.ibm.com; Bill Nese at (609) 381-3249, e-mail bn67fairlane@gmail.com We want to hear from you. Finally, let’s not lose sight of why we participate in this wonderful hobby. It’s all about “FUN.” Don’t ever take the “FUN” out of it… Keep On Cruisin’…Bill Nese

1. Keep Tabs on eBay Also keep an eye on Craigslist. Although not as easy to surf as eBay, I’ve seen some great deals there too. 2. Go Junkyarding Junkyards are not immune to the effects of the economy, and these days some junkyards are asking lower prices for their parts than they did a couple of years ago. I’ve scored several trim pieces for three of our cars from a yard in York, Pa. for roughly half what they would have normally charged, and I picked up a decent door from another yard near Hershey for 50 bucks, which I also believe was half-priced. 3. Buy Your Next Project Car Project cars (and parts cars) are starting to creep upward in price, but there are still deals to be had. As folks continue to sell off the cars they’ve been holding on to with the best intentions (“I’m going to fix it up someday,”) you can often bring them home for reasonable prices. Abandoned projects can often be purchased for far less than the owner has invested. Check the obvious such as eBay, Auto Trader, Hemmings...and keep tabs on the local classifieds. 4. Network If you are looking for a project or parts car it pays to network. Most of us have been approached at one time or another at a cruise or show by a participant or spectator and asked if we’re interested in purchasing a car similar to ours. 5. Go Hunting This is the time of year when the foliage is swept away and it’s easy to see into the yards of folks who live on back roads. Take a weekend afternoon and peruse these roads. Don’t be afraid to knock on a door and inquire about “that old Chevy” sitting in the yard. 6. Catch the Sales Many of the parts suppliers we deal with have end-of-season specials and holiday sales. During difficult economic times their prices are sometimes slashed even deeper than usual, and some offer additional incentives such as free shipping. 7. Build a New Engine Although building an engine is expensive, now might be a good time. Besides getting deals on new and used parts, machine shops generally slow down after racing season ends. While the good ones stay busy all year, their backlog is generally diminished at least somewhat during the early winter months. 8. Give Gift Certificates If you will be shopping for a cruiser, consider giving a gift certificate to one of the companies he or she deals with most. In doing so, you can be assured he’ll get what he wants most. 9. Cleanliness Counts While the cold weather has you and your ride moored indoors, spend some time cleaning. I don’t mean the detailing you normally do, I mean take the time to clean the areas that aren’t normally accessible, but where rust often begins. 10. Maintenance is Paramount Even if you don’t have any major improvements planned for your car this winter, there are some things you should do. The long winter also provides ample opportunity to change your other fluids and address any leaks or minor mechanical issues. Inspect brake hoses for signs of cracking or deterioration and inspect brake lines for rust. Check your engine and transmission mounts for signs of tearing and deterioration. Inspect your fuel lines and hoses for deterioration, cracks, and signs of leakage. Check the exhaust pipes and mufflers for signs of rust-through and make sure the hangers are all in good condition. Inspect all wiring for signs of cracking and chafing, and check to be sure that there is no sign of corrosion at any connectors. It’s also a good time to lubricate your windshield wiper linkage, door mechanisms, and climate controls.

SERVING THE HOT ROD INDUSTRY FOR OVER 40 YEARS

Tribute to a Cruiser A fitting tribute to deceased car enthusiasts is celebrating their memory with something that they had really enjoyed. Thus, the friends of Ozzie Sandora decided to hold a memorial cruise to honor the memory of their late friend and family member. The “Ozzie’s Memorial Run” in September was staged as a car run to show remembrance for a true car guy. The run started at the Tangiers Motel in Wildwood Crest, N.J. By the number of cars that participated in the run, one can easily see that a fellow cruiser is always remembered in a special way by the members of the car community.

Cruise Down 55 Route 55 is a major thoroughfare in New Jersey. Like all major highways, its exits lead to a specific destination—and if you were to take Exit 32A off 55 in Vineland, you would wind up near the entrance of a Ramada Inn. If you happened to do so on September 1, you would have shown up at a really cool car show. The first annual “Cruise Down 55” show had over 150 rides of all descriptions come out for a good cause. Vendors and displays as well as a selection of classic movie cars were also present. The show’s proceeds went to the AT/RT research at the Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, benefiting the Kevin Snyder Memorial. Exit 32a now has a special car enthusiasts’ destination at the end of the road. You just may find it with a cruisin’ car symbol on your next roadmap.

W

hen looking back at the past year, it’s clear there was no shortage of events to attend. In spite of gasoline prices that skyrocketed—then plummeted and escalated again—area car guys and gals had plenty of options. When you look back and think about the shows and cruises that took place, you can categorize them into two groups: Established shows and pop-up events. Now, I’m not going to go into a commentary on the semantics of these two groups, but I will say that as a result of all of these shows and cruises combined, car owners certainly had plenty to keep themselves busy. Events that seem to appear on the calendar unexpectedly, referred to as the pop-ups, filled many voids on this year’s calendar. Most of these events had a cause or charity behind them. Although many of these events were fueled by noble intentions, it is still important for a seasoned car event chairperson to plan dates carefully and well in advance. It’s about avoiding potential conflict of events held geographically close to one another as much as it is about getting the cruisers out to participate. The past year was a special one for me in a very unexpected way. After a 14-year hiatus from the helm of the Cruise Down Memory Lane event (Vineland, NJ), I found myself coordinating it with my good friend Marvin Askins. It was a rush to be part of such a large gathering of fellow car owners and working with a new team of car enthusiasts from the South Jersey Mustang Club and the South Jersey Cruisers, as well as volunteers. It made for a special year indeed! I hope it leaves a positive legacy. The year was also special to me as I reflect on my long-standing relationship with Cruising Magazine. I’ve been a contributor for more than 23 non-stop years, back to the days when CM was entitled Cruisin’ News. I look forward to many more years of writing for CM. Time truly flies when you are having a good time. I also can look back to a full season of co-hosting a radio program, Show and Go Garage, on 92.1 FM with fellow car guy John Quinn. It’s about fun and getting the word out on car activities. It’s also about getting to introduce some of the many great people that make up our hobby. Looking back at the past car season also makes me reflect on all of the great car guys and gals that I know and get to meet at the various events. They are the heart of the hobby and they make every show, cruise, and car activity very special. Like all car seasons, the 2012 car scene has so many stories to tell. I hope it was a positive experience for all of you fellow cruisers out there. This old car guy would like to extend greetings for a great holiday season that now approaches us. We will soon have the winter to get ourselves geared up for the Cruising Season of 2013. Department of Frostbite: Lookin’ forward to seeing hundreds of cruisers at the Main Tree Shopping Center in Vineland on Sunday, November 4, for the Frostbite Cruise. Make sure your car heater works. Department of Winter Fun: Get a group of car friends together and have a fun run somewhere. Department of Thanks: To every sponsor who advertises in Cruising Magazine and allows the word to be going out to our readers. A publication that is informative and free is a great deal. Final thought for 2012…Our hobby is cruising…and you know….that’s a hobby that gives you a million smiles per gallon.

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang, Well gang, it’s back. Yup, I had to turn on my heater. This is the time of year that most of us park our toys and bring out the other toys—like snow plows. It’s amazing how at first mention of that four-letter word, stores sell out of milk, eggs, and bread, and all of a sudden every vehicle on four wheels has a plow. I even saw a golf cart with a plow! Hey, I know us guys need to have our toys, but you ladies often get in on the act as well. A blonde driving a pink Jeep Wrangler with a plow has been spotted. And, yes, I hate the cold! I will be representing Cruising Magazine at this year’s Pumpkin Run, along with John Quinn, Ben Notaro and Mac Thomas. I’m breaking out the old tent and tables again, so bring out the flyers. We’re there to get the word out. John Quinn will be taking the remaining flyers and magazines and will be representing Cruising Magazine at the 23rd East Coast Indoor Nationals, Dec. 1-2 in Timonium, Md. It is also the time of year for clubs and “Breakfast Runs.” These events are a fun way to get out and get together as hobbyist. Check out the local clubs in your area for more information. It’s also time to talk about interclub meetings as there are four in our area. These meetings are larger than the local president meetings and are meant to cover broader geographic areas to get more input and ideas. I know most of us don’t like change, but let’s face it, we’re getting old. New ideas and gimmicks won’t hurt our events. They might even add a breath of fresh air. We see too many events go by the wayside only to be replaced by something not nearly as well done. I believe that most events could be brought back to life with just a couple of new twists. Be sure to check out this month’s calendar for details on all of the interclub meetings. Cruising Magazine’s annual interclub get-together will be held on Feb. 10 at the Christiana Hilton in Newark, Del. So now, on behalf and on our Cruising Magazine family, I would like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe Cruising New Year.

See Ya Cruising,

Larry
