BEAT THE CLOCK Since 1953, Brandywine Motorsport Club has focused on the thrill of the drive By Frank Adkins

M

ost car clubs focus on one manufacturer or model of automobile, while other clubs are centered on a particular genre of cars, such as street rods, muscle cars, rat rods, etc. In either case, the vehicles are at the centerpoint. The Brandywine Motorsport Club is a car club of a different ilk. The focus of the BMC is not the cars themselves. Rather, the emphasis is on driving events. The cars seen at BMC events are as diverse as their members. Where else would you expect to find a gathering that includes late model BMWs and Corvettes in the same company as Mazda Miatas, classic Austin Healy and MG sports cars, and even a vintage Mustang or Chevy II? While some are clean enough to be show-worthy, they are all “drivers.” The BMC does not host or promote car shows. Instead, it attracts those who enjoy driving their cars, no matter what types of cars they may be. Members come from all walks of life and include college students, middle-aged white collar and blue-collar professionals, and retirees. These folks are simply automotive enthusiasts who enjoy competing against each other by pitting their driving skills against the clock. The BMC originated in 1953 in Wilmington, Del. as a spin-off of the MG Car Club, an international organization of MG automobile owners with its world headquarters in the United Kingdom. While the MG Car Club is currently celebrating its 80th year, at that time, there was not enough support to keep the local chapter of the MG Car Club afloat. By January 13, 1954 the BMC had been formed, and it was ready to stand on its own, separate from the MGCC. In its early days, BMC members competed in gymkhanas, hill climbs, and rallies. One of the club’s charter members, George Alderman, is still active in the club today. Alderman is the founder of Alderman Automotive Machine in New Castle, Del. He enjoyed a professional racing career spanning nearly five decades, and he is a recent inductee into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. His son, Paul, now operates the family business. He, too, is a retired professional racer and a regular competitor at BMC events. A handful of other members have been active for 40 years or more. These days, the BMC hosts several road rallies and auto cross competitions each season. The road rallies lead participants through scenic areas via winding secondary roads. Typically, the routes traverse rural Delaware, Pennsylvania, and/or Maryland. Each team is comprised of a driver 6

George Alderman in his Cooper F3 at a 1963 Brandywine Motorsports Club hill climb at the former NVF site in Yorklyn, Delaware. Since the Cooper didn’t have a reverse gear, two colleagues helped Alderman push his car back between two required lines to stop in so he could continue his run.

and a navigator, and often there are checkpoints along the way. Successful rally participants strive for accuracy. This type of rally is sometimes referred to as a time-speed-distance competition. Traveling at a certain speed for a given distance means that you should arrive at the next checkpoint at a specific time. Those with the lowest cumulative error—arriving early or late—win. It sounds simple, but there are many variables. Because the route directions are intentionally vague, it is easy to miss a turn. Realizing the mistake and then compensating for it takes experience, strong math skills, and gut instinct. If traffic dictates that too much time is spent at a stop sign or if a slower vehicle on the road impedes a competitor’s travel, the lost time must be made up as quickly and as accurately as possible without breaking any laws. It is the navigator’s job to account for all of these things and instruct the driver what to do. The driver’s job is to drive the vehicle while obeying the navigator’s commands. Folks often compete in road rallies in sports cars, antique vehicles, or other special interest cars, but they are just as likely to arrive in their everyday sedans, mini-vans, and SUVs. The vehicle isn’t what is important. What matters is having fun. Some forego the stop watches and go along just for the camaraderie and the scenic drive. BMC’s auto crosses are slightly more restrictive concerning vehicle types. Trucks and SUVs are generally not permitted because their high centers of gravity makes them prone to rolling over during tight, high-speed maneuvers on the auto cross course. Otherwise, practically any fourwheeled motor vehicle is welcome. Vehicles must pass safety inspections and drivers must have helmets with current SNELL ratings, but the club provides loaner helmets for newcomers who wish to experience the thrill of auto cross before investing in a helmet. Auto cross competitions (formerly known as gymkhanas) are held in large parking lots on courses defined by orange pylons. The objective is to run the course as quickly and as cleanly as possible. Each run is timed to the thousandth of a second, and competitors are often separated by just a few hundredths or thousandths of a second. A two-second penalty is levied for every cone a competitor knocks down.

Winning drivers Renee O’Leary (MG) and Tom Lawrence (Austin Healey) at a 1960 BMC competition.

Cars are assigned into various classes based on the type of car and its anticipated performance level. The classes are similar to those established by the Sports Car Club of America, and they ensure that everyone has a fair chance by competing against the drivers of vehicles similar to their own. For example, the Classic Street Car class is for older vehicles, both foreign and domestic, that are mostly stock. The vehicles competing in this class are mainly 1960s and 1970s models. In recent years they have included early Novas and Chevy IIs, an MG Midget, Corvette Stingrays, an early GTO, Paul Alderman’s ‘66 Mustang, a 1964 Austin Healey, and my own ’65 Plymouth Valiant. Because the course is different each time, there is no way for people to learn the course and remember it from one outing to the next. The objective during the first run or two of the day is to learn the course. Then, on the remaining runs, competitors seek opportunities to trim those precious fractions of a second. As automobile racing goes, auto cross is one of the safest forms. Speeds are relatively low—usually first, second, and sometimes third gears. The course is designed to keep participants as safe as possible and to minimize their risk of colliding with stationary obstacles such as fences and light poles. When things go sideways (pun intended), the worst that usually happens is that a few cones get mowed down. The only injury the driver sustains is a bruised ego. The risk of damage to the vehicle is also minimal. In the past, the BMC has hosted its auto cross events in the back parking lot at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del. and at Glasgow High School near Newark, Del. For the last couple of years, they have used the parking lot at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md. Typically, they host four to six events each year during the warm weather months. Although racers are competitive by nature, for the members of the BMC, it’s all about being safe while having fun. The atmosphere at any BMC event is warm and inviting, and members support newcomers by offering ride-alongs in which veteran auto crossers offer tips and instruction to those who are new to the sport. Family involvement also plays a significant role in maintaining an active membership. It is not uncommon to see two and even three generations of a family competing and/or helping to run club events. For these reasons, the BMC has thrived for more than 65 years. The New Normal For Car Gatherings Car guys and gals have a passion for driving their special rides. Spring really gets the adrenalin going to cruise, grabbing a bite and enjoying some ice cream. So, even in this time where people have mandates to wear a mask for health protocols, it’s still a time to get out the ride. At Uncle Bill’s custard and food stand in South Jersey, a group of enthusiasts ventured out to socialize (at a distance), wear a mask, enjoy their rides, and stay within compliance of health edicts. You can be sure that under those masks are smiles of sharing the camaraderie of cruising -- even during not so usual times. — Text: Ben Notaro / Photos: Bob Sliwecki

THE WOMEN OF MOPAR Stories of unique individuals who have made our hobby better (Part Two) By Lou Sitaras

W

ay back in 1872, a woman named Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting in her hometown of Rochester, New York, and convicted in a widely publicized trial. Although she refused to pay the fine, the authorities declined to take further action (a smart decision on their part). It was the beginning of the women’s rights movement. Just six years later (1878), Anthony and her associate, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, arranged for Congress to be presented with an amendment giving women the right to vote. It was eventually ratified as the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. Susan B. Anthony subsequently became the first female citizen to be depicted on U.S. currency when her portrait appeared on the 1979 dollar coin. This year, exactly 100 years after women were given the right to vote, Cruising Magazine is celebrating women in the collector car field who have shown both passion and initiative. Women who sometimes had to fight in a male-dominated arena to have their thoughts and ideas heard and acted upon. I am proud to bring these women to the forefront. Not in my words but in their own words, their stories of what brought them to appreciate the hobby, the cars, and especially the people. This is part two of a four-part series: The Women of Mopar.

10

Brenda Walls with none other than NASCAR legend “The King”, Richard Petty, at the Ridgely Car Show.

BRENDA WALLS

Walls is one of the most remarkable women I have ever met. She’s dedicated, focused, and passionate. She took a small rural town named Ridgely and turned it into the most amazing car show in the tri-state area while at the same time raising more than $300,000 for charity.

WALLS: Before I could even drive, I loved cars and any type of racing. I’ve always loved the look of the Mopars and the colors were just incredible! My father was a Chevy guy, but there was just something about a Mopar that drew my attention. I remember when I was 15, my boyfriend and I drove up to Carlisle looking to possibly sell his ‘69 Dodge Dart and look for another Mopar. This was long before the internet and we heard you could find or sell anything there. We didn’t know that all the hotels would be booked so we actually ended up sleeping in the car that night in order to hit the fairgrounds again first thing in the morning. The people we met there were so cool!

looking for a reason to leave. So, I had an idea to create the ultimate car show, a “Carfest” if you will. I got together with a few friends, came up with some cool ideas, partnered with the Petty’s and the Petty Family Foundation and while incorporating my vintage looking pharmacy/ice cream parlor along with our neat little town and it just became a really cool deal. Hence, the Ridgely Car Show. We’ve raised a ton of money for our charities and met some incredible people. All things considered, I’d have to say the best thing about being a part of the Mopar family is the people I’ve met and the friends I’ve made throughout the years. It’s been an incredible journey.

DIANE FERRO

I first met Diane Ferro in 2014 behind the counter at Totally Auto Mopar Restorations. Three years later, I would join her on the Rapid Transit Tour. Her contributions to the hobby are endless—more than I have space to list—and she is a celebrity judge at the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. Ferro is an ardent supporter of the collector car hobby and I’m proud to call her a member of my family.

Diane Ferro taking a break in the back of her 1946 Dodge pick-up truck while enjoying a sunny day at a local car show.

Time rolls on but I always made those trips up to Carlisle, even taking my daughter in a little red wagon and pulled her up and down those gravely paths looking for cool parts for our car. We ended up getting another ‘69 Swinger 340 4 speed that eventually was part of our daughter’s wedding in 2009. Yep, we had an all Mopar muscle car wedding procession. Over the years we continually attended car shows, NHRA Drag races and NASCAR races. I love anything to do with racing and speed. I got my 2003 Red Viper roadster in 2011, did some mods to it myself, but then had Petty’s Garage modify it even more. They added some real nice touches and performance pieces and it was actually on display there for a year showing off the work they do. A few years before this, we attended many cars shows and the only thing that bugged me about regular car shows was that they could get boring without anything else to do. Sitting around on hot asphalt was not such a good idea. I could see the wives and kids of the guys that brought their cars just

FERRO: My love of cars in general started with my dad, as did my brother’s. His friends all came to the house to work on cars. One friend though pulled up in a bright yellow ‘Cuda and it shined from the inside out! Of course it did as Chrysler was the only manufacturer to paint the engine compartments! This must have been 1977 or 1978. Then I met my future husband Dave when he was driving a 1968 GTO. We cruised that entire summer with endless street racing. I was hooked into more than just the cars. I’d ask him a multitude of questions and he was always willing and happy to explain....engines, transmissions, horsepower. I listened, I learned, and we grew. The love affair continued for both Dave and cars. We were married in 1984. We had a 1968 Polara at the time, a huge car! By 1985, we owned a Dart convertible and there was a beautiful ‘70 orange Challenger across the street. Loved the lines on that car and go-mango orange was the perfect color. We bought it along with various other Mopars. The history, the uniqueness, the wild colors. The HEMI fueled my love for these cars. I eventually bought that orange Challenger from Dave...best deal ever! It’s still tucked in our garage today. By 1986, Totally Auto was started and continues on today. Over the years we’ve judged shows, started our own judged events, restored countless cars, ran a parts business, and offered a spray paint line to help the home restorer. We’ve since taken it back to the street cruising with 50 or so of our closest friends on the Rapid Transit Tour. There is a passion and camaraderie among Mopar people that is unmatched. I am so very proud to say I am one of them! Please check out our next issue and read about the women who have really stepped up to make our hobby one that the entire family can enjoy: men, women, and children, too. Part Three of The Women of Mopar will appear in Cruising Magazine’s August-September issue.

BUYING IN THE DIGITAL AGE Cars and parts are often now just a click away By Frank Adkins

I

t was the late 1970s and I was entering my teens. A few of my friends had dirt bikes, but my parents wouldn’t allow me to have one. My mother was an operating room nurse who worked second shift on weekends in a busy hospital. Through the years she had helped to treat hundreds of motorcycle accident victims, and she regularly asserted that there was no way her son would have a motorcycle. I knew that convincing them to let me purchase anything propelled by an internal combustion engine would be a tough sell, but when I was 13 they relented to my incessant begging and permitted me to buy a used go-kart. That particular go-kart belonged to a kid maned Eddie who lived up the street, and he only wanted $35 for it. Of course, I neglected to mention to my parents that he had completely disassembled it. On the day when I had finally amassed the cash, Eddie made

12

three trips to my house to deliver all of the pieces. When my father saw not a go-kart, but rather, the pile of parts that I had actually purchased—a frame and boxes containing an engine bock, piston, crankshaft, carburetor, and other essentials—he frowned and said, “Looks like you bought a real piece of (crap)!” Three days later I had it running and drivable, save for the front tires and tubes which were missing. Of course, before Eddie had disassembled it, he had abused it mercilessly. Having run it nearly out of oil several times and having repeatedly used the choke to bog the engine long enough to jump aboard after push-starting it (he had locked the failed centrifugal clutch with a bolt, so pull-starting it was out of the question), the cylinder wall was badly scored. Eventually the little three horsepower Briggs and Stratton lost all compression.

Thus began my search for a replacement engine. In those days there were only two options for classifieds in my area, The News Journal newspaper and the Swapper, a weekly publication of classified ads printed in Newark, Del. Week after week I scoured the classifieds for suitable engines in my price range. Due to my speed lust, I always drove the go-kart just as hard I could. Furthermore, on any replacement engine, I immediately disabled the governor. Consequently, I became quite adept at rebuilding small engines, and I completely destroyed four of them over the next two years. Yes, I read the Swapper often! When I was 15, I sold both the go-kart and one of my home-built bicycles in order to purchase my first car. It was a ’64 Dodge Dart with an ailing automatic transmission. I decided to replace the automatic transmission with a manual gearbox. My buddy Mike had replaced the clutch in his father’s Ford Pinto station wagon, so I was certain that he knew all there was to know about clutches and manual transmissions. He was a few months older than me, and when he turned 16 we visited junkyards in search of the parts I’d need to make my conversion. Soon I traded the money I’d earned delivering newspapers and cutting grass for said parts. For a transmission, once again I turned to the Swapper. I purchased a three-speed floor-shifted transmission and shifter from somebody who was parting out a Plymouth Duster in an apartment complex north of Wilmington, Del. (The apartment manager and other residents probably weren’t thrilled, but that didn’t concern me.) On the way home, the transmission rolled in the back of my parents’ station wagon and spilled hypoid gear oil into the carpet. For years afterward the family wagon stunk on hot days. The bearings in that transmission turned out to be worn and noisy (buyer beware!), but it held me over until I could afford to buy another one from a late model Dodge Aspen wreck in a junkyard. In those days, finding cars and parts was both time consuming and labor intensive. It was also localized. When searching for parts, the classifieds were good only if the seller deemed the part in question valuable enough to warrant a listing. Word of mouth and junkyards were the only other options. Of course, it was possible to call various junkyards in an effort to save time, but such parts inquiries usually netted the response, “We probably have it. Come in and take a look.” Finding cars was equally difficult. People in the market for cool cars would scour ads in all of their local publications (most of which included, at best, one grainy image on newspaper print), keep their ears open for any line on such a car, and keep their eyes peeled for “For Sale” signs taped into the side windows of the cars they encountered in their travels. Entire weekends would be devoted to the quest! Folks selling a car or parts would place ads in a local classified paper, answer numerous phone calls, and sacrifice nights and weekends in hopes that the people who said they were coming would actually show up. It often took weeks or even months for buyers and sellers to come together, if they ever did at all. One major limitation of the local classifieds was that they were just that—local. Generally, each publication served area with a radius of 50 or so miles. If you wanted to expand your search, you had to drive to another area and purchase their publications. It would be another couple of years before my friend’s father, Jack, would introduce me to the national publication Hemmings Motor News. Although I enjoyed reading his back issues, I soon discovered that Hemmings catered to serious car collectors, not regular guys like me who were struggling just to keep their junk running. Furthermore, “regular” people looking to sell their decade-old cars didn’t advertise in Hemmings. Jack also introduced me to the regional swap meets in Carlisle, Hershey, and Macungie, Pa., as well as Atlantic City, N.J. I seized every opportunity to blow whatever spare cash I could muster on car parts and tools. Although I scored many items that I would have never obtained otherwise, finding what I actually needed and for a fair price was very hit-and-miss. By the early ‘90s, some late night television shows highlighting the inventory of various used car lots began to appear on local cable channels. While these shows could save a lot of time and legwork for insomniacs looking for a deals on cars at Buy-Here-PayHere lots, they did little to bring the vast majority of car buyers and sellers together.

Things remained largely unchanged until later in the ‘90s when the Internet came into widespread use. Arguably, it was eBay.com that revolutionized the way vehicles and used parts change hands. Overnight it became possible to quickly scour hundreds of ads from sellers across the country or around the world. Color photos highlighting attributes and revealing blemishes of goods minimized the guesswork associated with traditional print ads. eBay’s auction format added to the excitement of scoring that elusive car or part, but if the seller opted for Buy It Now pricing, that car or part could be yours immediately and with just a few mouse clicks. Suddenly there was no more playing phone tag, getting directions, or waiting for people who would never show up. As I soon discovered, eBay gave those of us in the rust belt access to cars, clean sheet metal, and trim pieces from dry climates elsewhere in the country. In fact, if not for eBay, I could not have completed many of the projects I have built over the last 20 years. Craigslist.org has proven to be something of a cross between eBay and the old print classifieds. The ads are accessible from anywhere in the world, but search areas are localized. Electronic ads and color photos provide far greater timeliness and information than the print ads, but the local scope can actually be a benefit when selling or buying items that are cost prohibitive to ship. Recently I sold a project car via Craigslist. I chose Craigslist over eBay because of its local scope. I wanted the buyer to see the car in person before completing the purchase because I wanted him to know exactly what he was getting. In addition, over the last two months I have purchased three Dodge Dakota project/parts trucks from Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. I found them all on Craigslist, and I completed the transactions in person. Numerous online clubs comprised of owners and enthusiasts of specific car makes and types have sprung up. Cars and parts change hands regularly thanks to connections made through these clubs. More recently, social media has gained widespread acceptance as a means of finding and selling cars and parts in much the same format as the online clubs, but without the expense of maintaining a website. Facebook has numerous such groups. Of course, now days nearly every classic car dealer, restoration parts warehouse, and used parts supplier has a website. Folks regularly share ads from these and other sources on social media. Although the Barrett-Jackson auctions began in 1971, they were not televised until the SPEED channel did so in 1995. This auction is regarded as the pinnacle of the collector car world where big dollar cars and big dollar buyers come together. The Mecum auctions got underway in 1988, but they remained overshadowed by Barrett-Jackson until recent years. Mecum now hosts the largest collector car auction in the world annually in Kissimmee, FL. Over an eight day period, 3,000 cars cross the auction block. Today, many enthusiasts regard visits to both auctions as bucket list events. A few years ago, my friend and fellow Cruising contributor Lou Sitaras drove his ’85 Cadillac from his home in Pennsylvania to the Mecum auction in Florida. A coastal storm left snowy, icy roads in the Carolinas, and he was forced to make an unplanned overnight stay in a roadside motel. When he arrived at Mecum, he was treated like royalty. The crew promptly cleaned his Caddy and had it looking its best. Lou chronicled his adventure on Facebook and in this publication last season. Although we take such activities for granted today, they were unheard of just a few years ago. He also had several phone conversations with Amy, a close friend and fellow car enthusiast a thousand miles away in western New York. They exchanged texts, photos, and videos while Lou walked about the rows of cars to be auctioned. When Lou’s car crossed the block, Amy was in contact with him in real time while watching his reactions on live TV. By the time the event was concluded, Lou’s Cadillac had found a new owner and he was on his way home in a retired police package Dodge Charger. The impacts of technology-based communication on our lives cannot be overstated, but nowhere are they better exemplified than in the world of automotive enthusiasts. — A version of this article first appeared in Cruising Magazine in June 2018.

THE CAR CLINIC “Where you are treated like a patient, not a victim”

CRUISING 101

Hi Gang,

A

re you climbing the walls yet? Did your wife put an addition on the house, (a crazy room)? Re-did the garage a few times? Maybe even added air conditioning to the garage? It’s an unfortunate reality that we’ve all gotten used to. I’ve ordered my mask with teeth printed on it. A little imagination doesn’t hurt, neither does being a little demented. What I’m basically saying is:

I’m Bored! Quarantine Sucks! I Need A Car Show!! Let’s look at that, shall we? Cars parked every other parking space (some couldn’t park, even if they had the whole lot). Two people under each tent. Only one person at a time looking at each car (Carlisle will take at least a week -- and two hours to get a hot dog). Oh, the excitement. And then, only two people sitting behind each car, but six feet apart. We also need to ask the biggest question: What about the out houses? Or do we look for a tree? I’d say that we’ve got some planning to do, if a show season still has hopes of happening. A lot of zigging and zagging, to say the least. After all, as good car enthusiasts we follow all laws. My favorite is, of course, that we have the right to mark our territory by marking the roads in front of our homes (burnouts). Good luck to the planners. And thank you to all the first responders and to those who have freely given their efforts during these crazy times. You can count on Cruising Magazine’s online version (CruisingMagazine. net) to keep you informed of schedule changes should things change again once we go to press. See Ya Cruising, I hope.

aving written for Cruising Magazine since the beginning, I’ve strived to keep my writing on the light side. I felt that a positive article always added a bit more to our hobby than a negative one. Sometimes, though, there is a reality in life that causes us to get serious for a moment. This is that moment. I think it’s safe to say that the Covid-19 virus that has plagued the world has also made a big impact on our hobby. Let’s face it, besides cars our hobby is a person-to-person social function. Since the middle of March until now, car events (as with many events) have been cancelled fast and furiously. I have spoken to show and event promoters and asked them what they thought the ramifications of the quarantine will be on our hobby for the balance of 2020. These are their reflections (of course, not everyone will necessarily agree with their predictions): • Car shows will have a decrease in attendance based on current social-distancing rules. I’ve been told that some states will have a rule that regulates groups of 8 up to 50 people. This can potentially put a cramp on some if not all car events. • If the requirement to wear a face mask remains in place for a considerable amount of time into the season, it will affect car events. One can only speculate that actions as common as saying hello, having a conversation, and giving out trophies while wearing a face mask may take the fun out an event. • Some promoters tried to speculate on the effect of the quarantine on the mindset of senior car owners. Will they want to socialize considering age and pre-existing health conditions could affect them in a post Covid -19 environment?

One thing that all of the respondents agreed upon is the resolve the classic/ specialty car owners will have to overcome these predictions. It may take time to rebuild the confidence of going to cruises, shows and the like…but it will rebound big time when that confidence returns. Yours truly has gone into the garage and started up the rides and taken them for a spin to get the cobwebs out. It’s also a great picker-upper on the fun of owning a piece of the past and using that ride to bring back thoughts of better days…better days that will surely return and will allow us to reawaken the endless summer of car activities of 2020. I truly bid you all good health and look forward to seeing you and conversing with you at car events.
