Aquí nos tomamos muy en serio el respeto y la tolerancia como pilares que fundamentan la construcción de una sociedad más abierta, más equitativay más justa.

An interview with Pride Committee members
Vidal Meza & Javier Jimenez Vidal Meza from Almar Group is the president of non-profit organization ACT LGBT (Asociación de Comercios y Turismo) and Javier Jimenez from Garbo Group is a member of the ACT LGBT leadership committee. Could you tell us about how you became involved with ACT LGBT and Vallarta Pride?
VM: I am Vidal Meza. I’m 44 years old and a native of Puerto Vallarta. I’m the one responsible at Almar Group for everything marketing related. I’m also the president of ACT, and that organization sponsors the Vallarta Pride festival each year. Why did we make this decision? I had participated in Pride as a sponsor of the LGBT Community since I started here at Almar three years ago, and since the very beginning I’ve been involved with Pride. Last year with our sponsorship, we had some differences with the organizers, and that’s when several of the business leaders who sponsor a big portion of

Pride, decided to act independently from the Pride organizers. The comments that we received from participants of last year’s Pride were that it was marvelous, great and much better than in previous years, and that was basically due to the sponsorship of Javier Jimenez and the Almar Group. After last year’s Pride and once we heard that the leaders resigned the day after Pride was over, I chatted with Javier and told him that since we’re the biggest sponsors of the event, it would make sense for us to take on the reigns of ACT. I told him that he should be the president and that I would help him any way I could. That was how we left it. Then, to my surprise, while I was on vacation I started receiving congratulations on my new position as president! I later told him that that wasn’t what we had agreed upon. But anyhow, things happen for a reason. Now I’m happy to have been chosen as president, and why? Well, because I’m a Vallarta native, my family is from here, we have a Vallartense company.
I think that this has helped ACT become better recognized by the local authorities because we speak Spanish. The language barrier between the old leadership and the local authorities had been an issue previously. With the new leadership committee, everyone is a business person, and that has opened doors with the local government.
JJ: I am Javier Jimenez. I’m 50 years old and have lived here in Vallarta full time since 1999. I’m an entrepreneur and I represent the Garbo Group and the several establishments that I’ve had the opportunity to open here in town. Since the beginning they’ve always been bars focused on the LGBT community, and that’s part of what motivated me so much to become part of the leadership committee of ACT, which I’m now a member of along with Vidal, for the same reasons that he just mentioned. I think it was the best thing at the time that we took over the reins of ACT and Vallarta Pride. We have short-term plans to benefit the entire community, because from the time they arrive at the airport,

from the first taxi they take, from the first restaurant or gay business, they start to have an economic benefit that few business owners are betting on or taking into consideration. Bringing in more people in general is a benefit that everyone recognizes. So of course, we invite new community business owners to join, to participate, to become members, because to maintain an association like the one we have isn’t cheap and opens serious new economic possibilities. Now we are focusing on the South American market to not be so dependent on Canada and the U.S. The Europeans will come, but because of the distance, it is easier for the Latin Americans to get here. Now we are promoting Vallarta to this new market so that this event grows, the community grows, and so does the economic benefit.
VM: Something we’re looking for as
ACT, as Javier says, is to bring greater
economic benefit to the community, such that, no matter which hotel they’re staying in or which bar they’re patronizing, we want more visitors for Vallarta. Javier and I have already been working together doing promotional tours in the U.S. We are the main sponsors of the Palm Springs White Party along with Jeffrey Sanker and Javier has personally accompanied me to several other Pride festivals. We go to promote our businesses, of course, but we’re also promoting the Vallarta brand. We always promote Vallarta events, whether it’s Vallarta Pride or Thanksgiving. Our focus is that there are always more visitors to Vallarta and that they’re leaving benefits for our community, and that is what we’re looking for. The emphasis this year is to make it bigger and more attractive. Today we hosted four bloggers who in total have 8.5 million followers and we
brought them here to get to know Vallarta. Obviously, they’re staying in our establishments and visiting our businesses, but the whole intention is that they fall in love with Vallarta and post stories of their experiences here. These bloggers, as Javier said, are focused on Latin Americans. They’re not so focused on the Americans or Canadians, because we feel that we’re already recognized in those markets, and we’re continuing other promotions there. We’re going to Palm Springs as Vallarta Pride and also to the World Pride festival in New York later this year, and all this at our own expense. As Javier said, we need the support of more business owners in the Zona Romántica and others outside the Zona who have significant community businesses. WELCOME TO PRIDE What has been your involvement in SETAC, Vallarta’s LGBT Community Wellness Center?
JJ: Something that motivates us as business owners is the fact that, just as there is a great economic benefit from attracting international tourists, there comes with that influx, like in any other international city, problems related to health. This motivates us as business owners to support institutions like SETAC because you can get your health tests, obtain medicines, get medical and/or psychological checkups related to all kinds of sexually transmitted or other illnesses. And sometimes the public institutions don’t always help with medicines for sick patients. It was these types of issues that made us want to support SETAC with its mission. It is a project that other people started many years ago, but Vidal and I appreciate the opportunity to help. We invite other members of the community to check out

SETAC. It needs a lot of medicine and staff. And their procedures are expensive and cost a lot of money. In this way we are also supporting the community. VM: I think that Javier like myself, before becoming members of ACT LGBT, we both directly supported SETAC’s mission, and I see the situation like this: ACT is an LGBT business and tourism association that has no social function. Its mission is simply to bring more business to Vallarta. SETAC acts as our community’s social arm, where we work together with other business owners to benefit all community members. It’s worth noting that both the Garbo Group and Almar Group have been paying the rent for SETAC’s office, now for more than a year. We have, along with ACT LGBT, brought together certain fundraising events to support SETAC. As well, if I’m not mistaken, I was one of the first people to fly donated antiretroviral medicine
from San Diego to here. Through various contacts at the hotel—the members and guests knew doctors in San Diego who were going to Palm Springs and who donated the medicine. So, I was flying with a note from SETAC announcing that these weren’t narcotics and they were to benefit the community, in case I was stopped either in customs or immigration. I made many trips and wound up bringing down 30-35 boxes of medicine for SETAC. Now, by grace and all the work by Paco and Ed, they now have access through international support to this medicine. Anyway, we continue to economically support SETAC and we plan to continue to do so because I think it’s an extremely important organization for Vallarta. Vidal Meza y Javier Jimenez Vidal Meza del Grupo Almar es el presidente de la organización sin fines de lucro ACT LGBT (Asociación de Comercios y Turismo) y Javier Jimenez del Grupo Garbo es miembro del comité de liderazgo de ACT LGBT. ¿Podrían contarnos cómo se involucraron con ACT LGBT y Vallarta Pride?
VM: Yo soy Vidal Meza, tengo 44
años, soy originario de Puerto Vallarta, responsable de Almar Group con todo lo que es mercadotecnia. Yo soy el presidente de ACT, que a su vez ACT cobija a lo que es Pride Vallarta.

Entonces le dije que eso no era lo pactado. Pero bueno, por algo pasan las cosas, y estoy contento que haya sido elegido presidente, y por qué? Porque soy de Vallarta, mi familia es de aquí, tenemos una empresa vallartense, una familia vallartense. Creo que esto es lo que ha ayudado a que ACT sea reconocido por las autoridades porque hablamos español también. Anteriormente había un problema con la comunicación de idioma con las autoridades y ahorita además del grupo nuevo de consejo que tenemos, que todos son empresarios pues ha abierto muchas puertas también con el Ayuntamiento.
nuevos empresarios en la comunidad que se unan, que participen, que sean miembros, porque mantener una asociación como la que tenemos no es barato y abre posibilidades económicas significativas. Ahora se está enfocando al mercado Sudamericano para no depender tanto de Canadá y Estados Unidos. Los europeos van a venir, pero para los sudamericanos es más fácil y más rápido llegar. Ahora estamos promocionando Vallarta a ese nuevo mercado para que crezca este evento, para que crezca la comunidad, y que crezca el beneficio económico.
VM: Algo que buscamos como ACT,
¿Porque tomamos esa decisión? He participado en el Pride como patrocinador desde su inicio. De manera personal me involucré en el negocio de Almar enfocado en la comunidad hace tres años, y desde que inicié he estado en contacto con lo que es Pride.
JJ: Yo soy Javier Jimenez, tengo 50
El año pasado el patrocinio que nosotros otorgamos, tuvimos unas diferencias con los organizadores y fue cuando decidimos entre otros empresarios que pagamos la mayor parte de Pride, hacerlo de manera independiente y separado de los organizadores de Pride. Entonces, los comentarios que recibimos del Pride pasado fue que fue maravilloso, grandioso, y muy enriquecido con las veces pasadas y básicamente fue gracias al patrocinio económico de Javier Jimenez y Grupo Almar. Después de que pasó el Pride, y nos enteramos de que los líderes renunciaron el día siguiente después del Pride, y en pláticas yo le dije a Javier, que si somos los empresarios con mayor recursos para la inversión en la Comunidad LGBT, creo que deberíamos aprovechar este parte de aguas y tomar las riendas de ACT. Y le dije “tú debes de ser presidente y yo

como dice Javier, es traer mayor derrama económica para la comunidad, así que, sin importar en que hotel se hospedan o a que bares y antros entran, que venga más gente a Vallarta. Javier y yo ya hemos trabajado juntos haciendo tours promocionales en los Estados Unidos. Somos los patrocinadores principales del White Party Palm Springs junto con Jeffrey Sanker y de manera personal Javier me ha acompañado a algunos otros eventos de Pride. Vamos a promover nuestros negocios, claro, pero también la marca de Vallarta. Siempre promocionamos los eventos de Vallarta, ya sea Vallarta Pride o Thanksgiving. Nuestro enfoque es que cada vez haya más visitantes a Vallarta y que dejen beneficios para la comunidad y eso es lo que estamos buscando.
Tenemos planes a corto plazo que beneficiaran toda la comunidad, porque desde que llegan al aeropuerto, desde que toman un taxi, desde que llegan a un restaurante o negocio gay, se empieza a tener una derrama económica que pocos empresarios toman en cuenta. Trayendo más gente, sin embargo, es un beneficio que todos perciben. Entonces, claro, invitamos a
El énfasis de este año es hacerlo más grande y más llamativo. Hoy recibimos a cuatro blogueros que en total suman 8.5 miliones de seguidores y los trajimos para que conozcan Vallarta. Obviamente se están hospedando en nuestros establecimientos y visitarán nuestros negocios, pero la intención es que se enamoren de Vallarta y que suban publicaciones de sus experiencias en Vallarta.

BIENVENIDOS A PRIDE Estos blogueros, como dijo Javier, se enfocan en latinoamericanos. No están enfocados tanto en los americanos o canadienses, porque pensamos que ya somos conocidos en esos mercados, y seguimos promocionando ahí. Vamos a ir a Palm Springs como Vallarta Pride y a World Pride en Nueva York, y todo es con recursos propios. Como dijo Javier, necesitamos el apoyo de más empresarios de la Zona Romántica y otros fuera de la zona que tengan negocios significativos de la comunidad. Los invitamos a que compren membresías y participen el desfile, porque sin estos recursos, no podemos seguir subsistiendo. ¿Cuál ha sido su involucramiento con SETAC, el Wellness Center de la Comunidad LGBT en Vallarta?
JJ: Lo que nos motiva como empresarios
es saber que también como hay una gran derrama económica por parte de los turistas que se atraen, también llega a ver, como con cualquier otra ciudad internacional, problemas relacionados a la salud. Eso nos motiva también como empresarios a apoyar instituciones como SETAC en la cual puedes tener tus pruebas de salud, puedes obtener medicamentos, puedes tener asesoramiento psicológico y medico

respecto a cualquier enfermedad venérea u otras de salud. Y a veces las instituciones públicas no apoyan con el medicamento para pacientes enfermos. Eran estos tipos de problemas que nos hizo apoyar a SETAC con su misión. Es un proyecto que otras personas empezaron hace muchos años, pero tanto como Vidal y su servidor, agradecemos la oportunidad de ayudar. Invitamos a miembros de la comunidad a que conozcan SETAC. Necesitan mucho medicamento y personal. Y sus procedimientos son muy caros y cuestan mucho dinero. De esta manera también apoyamos a la comunidad.

Angie Star Born and raised by his proud and loving grandmother in Puerto Vallarta, Jose Angel Morales Martínez quit his management career to work and help with home expenses and at age 18 he came out as gay. By that time, he joined an amateur drag contest impersonating Celine Dion. He went on to win the competition and this changed his life forever. That was the day that Miss Angie Star was born. Transsexuality is always a complex topic to talk about, says Angie. “Coming out as gay is hard enough, now imagine declaring oneself as transsexual”. Angie Star started her transition process at age 19, but she says that she has been clearly defined as transsexual since seven years ago. “People think that being transsexual is just the desire of dressing up as a woman and wearing cute clothes. It’s much more than that. It’s a lifestyle and it is who one truly is”. “Being a drag queen or impersonator doesn’t make you a transexual, same as being a transexual doesn’t mean that you can’t be a performer. One thing has nothing to do with the other. Being a performer is a job and a career, not a lifestyle. 20

As a transexual, we get more discrimination and violations to our civil rights. We get banned from places like restaurants, bars, stores, and even bathrooms - where does a trans woman go? People look at you weird in public and call you names. A lot of people don’t realize everything we go through. Even in our own community, gay guys discriminate sometimes and call us ‘vestidas’ (dressed women) with the intention of offending, it’s like calling a gay guy ‘joto’ or ‘puto’ (fag). “We get killed and there is no justice - they all think we deserve this”. One of Angie’s projects is to start a trans foundation. “It will be to teach, protect, counsel and help all trans girls out there that have to prostitute themselves as there are no job opportunities or place for us. Many commit suicide or do drugs. The struggle is out there every single day.” “I always thought about what my family, specially my mom and grandmother, would think about me transitioning, but the day that
my grandmother told me that she was proud of me and that she was going to be happy whichever way I decided to be so I could be happy, then that’s when I decided to transition”. She has been a two-time pageant queen, three-time Drag Derby winner, and has been performing for over 20 years now. Having two successful tours in Canada, she will soon do the crossover into the United States as well. Angie Star is the leader and MC of two drag show troupes: Sassy Girls and the Crazy Bitches show. Angie Star has always helped the community with charities and supporting others. This movie enthusiast and pet lover is living her best moment and there are many new projects to come.

La gente te mira raro en público y te llama nombres. Mucha gente no se da cuenta de todo lo que pasamos. Incluso en nuestra propia comunidad, los chicos homosexuales discriminan a veces y nos llaman “vestidas” con la intención de ofender, es como llamar “joto” o “puto” a un gay. “Nos matan y no hay justicia, todos piensan que merecemos esto”. Uno de los proyectos de Angie es comenzar una fundación trans. “Será para enseñar, proteger, aconsejar y ayudar a todas las niñas trans que tienen que prostituirse, ya que no hay oportunidades de trabajo ni lugar para nosotros. Muchos se suicidan o hacen drogas. La lucha es dura todos los días“.
“Siempre pensé en lo que mi familia, especialmente mi mamá y mi abuela, iban a pensar de mi transición, pero el día en que mi abuela me dijo que estaba orgullosa de mí y que iba a ser feliz de cualquier manera que decidiera ser yo, entonces ahí fue cuando decidí hacer la transición“. Angie ha sido dos veces reina de concurso de belleza, tres veces ganadora del Drag Derby, y ha estado haciendo shows durante más de 20 años. Al tener dos giras exitosas en Canadá, pronto hará el cruce a los Estados Unidos también. Angie Star es la líder y MC de dos comparsas de drag show: Sassy Girls y Crazy Bitches. Angie Star siempre ha ayudado a la comunidad con organizaciones benéficas y apoyando a otros. Carl
Timothy Carl Timothy moved to Puerto Vallarta in 1999 from Los Angeles where he was a broker in Beverly Hills. He used to visit Vallarta several times a year and, in the process, he fell in love with this town. Carl moved here when an opportunity arose to be a partner in a Real Estate company. “They put me on a boat and didn’t come back to shore until I had agreed – they were looking for someone to represent Real Estate sales”. “It has been really fun over the last 19 years to watch Vallarta grow. When I say grow, I mean in all sorts of different ways because it was a small community and people have fallen in love with it, and see the businesses change, to see the theaters come into town, we have great opportunities for entertainment now. At first, we only had a couple options for entertainment – hardly anything, sometimes they were just wandering around in a restaurant” Carl started the Timothy Real Estate group in 2010. He also organizes the yearly Vallarta Real Estate fair. “The Vallarta Real Estate fair is a wonderful opportunity for people who are living here or thinking about living here to get answers to questions about what it is like to live here, can I get health insurance, what medical treatment is available here, etc.” 24

He has helped the community in many ways. One way he has done so is through House Hunters International. “They contacted me, asked if we wanted to do a TV show. We auditioned, then we did our first House Hunters International show a number of years ago – After we did that, we thought it would be fun to turn that into a charity event – capitalizing on the opportunity of being able to have a tv show and raising some money for the community at the same time.” “We’ve done those charity events for the community for different charities. We’ve raised funds for Toys for Tots, Botanical Gardens, Asilo San Juan Diego, SETAC, to name a few. It has been a real pleasure for us to do every couple of years.” Carl serves in the Board of Vallarta Botanical Garden and helps them as much as he can. He also serves in several other boards here in town.
In addition, Carl is the vice president of the Board of Realtors in Vallarta. He graduated from college on a scholarship in musical theatre. “I decided that it wasn’t a way to make a great living because I don’t think I’m that talented – that’s when I got into real estate.” Carl was a member of the Gay Men’s Chorus for a couple of years where he met a lot of wonderful music people and enjoyed singing. He is now involved in Vallarta Vocalista Ensemble where they perform at Incanto.
I love Puerto Vallarta. The local Mexican community has embraced all of us crazy Americans. It has been a pleasure. The last 19 years have been a really fun adventure

También organiza la feria anual Vallarta Real Estate. “La feria de Bienes Raíces de Vallarta es una oportunidad maravillosa para las personas que viven aquí o que piensan vivir aquí para obtener respuestas a sus preguntas sobre cómo es vivir aquí, puedo obtener un seguro médico, qué tratamiento médico hay disponible aquí, etc.” Él ha ayudado a la comunidad de muchas maneras. Una de las formas en que lo ha hecho es a través de House Hunters International. “Se contactaron conmigo y me preguntaron si queríamos hacer un programa de televisión. Hicimos una audición, luego hicimos nuestro primer show de House Hunters International hace varios años. Después de eso, pensamos que sería divertido convertir eso en un evento de caridad, aprovechando la oportunidad de poder tener un programa de televisión y recaudando algo de dinero para la comunidad al mismo tiempo“ “Hemos hecho esos eventos de caridad para la comunidad para

Se graduó de la universidad con una beca en teatro musical. “Decidí que no era una manera de ganarme la vida porque no creo que tenga tanto talento, es cuando entré en el sector inmobiliario”. Carl fue miembro del Coro de Hombres Gay durante un par de años, donde conoció a mucha gente maravillosa de música y disfrutó cantando. Ahora está involucrado en Vallarta Vocalista Ensemble donde se presentan en Incanto. “Me encanta Puerto Vallarta. La comunidad mexicana local nos ha acogido a todos los estadounidenses locos. Mama Tits
Brian Peters, the one who gives life to the amazing Mama Tits, left everything behind in the US to come to live in Puerto Vallarta. Together with his husband they have made a sanctuary for themselves here and are loving life in this Mexican beach town. Brian has been a performer since he was 5 years of age and has been doing Drag since he was 16 years old. When Brian first came onto the scene he started in Seattle. After quite a few years of service Brian felt it was time for the next chapter in his life and created a new persona, soon to become his most notable character, Mama Tits was created in 2010. However, the world was introduced to Mama Tits by the 2014 viral video of her taking on the anti-Gay protesters at the Seattle’s Pride Parade. Mama Tits currently performs at Puerto Vallarta’s largest Cabaret Theater complex, ACT II Stages in the illustrious Red Room Cabaret, and his show is about motivation, self-love, and positivity. “I just want people to know that they’re worth it, live your truth, be proud of who you are, and always remember to shine on like the star that you are – and if people don’t appreciate it, screw them, get better people in your life – it’s too short to be surrounded by assholes” Brian and hubby added a rescue pup to their family that was found outside of the theatre. You can tell that the little guy is so grateful for being rescued and loves his new family very much. “The great thing about being here is that my husband and I love to live in full color – We try to keep with local art. We have some Francine, we have some Jorge, we have some wonderful artists from the Malecón. We try not to buy a lot of the mass-produced things.” Like many in our community, Brian had a hard time growing up being gay. “I grew up very bullied, very made fun of. I’ve always been a big kid and I’ve always been very flamboyant, so it was hard for me to not be ‘gay’. People have been mean my whole life and it was rough.” He didn’t let that stop him from being himself though. “What spoke to me was the thought process of no matter what, fuck them bitches. You’re worth it, you deserve love, you deserve to be fierce, you deserve to be yourself.“ Mama Tits even has a famous saying on her show: “Celebrate who you are, and if the people around you don’t appreciate it, toss them in front of one of the buses here in Vallarta! Cause they’ll run them over as many

Brian Peters, el que da vida a la increíble Mama Tits, dejó todo atrás en los Estados Unidos para venir a vivir a Puerto Vallarta. Junto con su esposo, han hecho un santuario para ellos y están amando la vida en esta ciudad costera mexicana. Mama Tits ahora se presenta en el complejo de teatro de cabaret más grande de Puerto Vallarta, ACT II Stages en el ilustre Red Room Cabaret, y su programa trata sobre la motivación, el amor propio y la positividad. “Solo quiero que la

gente sepa que valen la pena, vive tu verdad, enorgullécete de quién eres y siempre recuerda brillar como la estrella que eres, y si la gente no lo aprecia, olvídalos, consigue mejores personas en tu vida – la vida es demasiada corta para estar rodeado de imbéciles ” Brian y su esposo agregaron un cachorro de rescate a su familia que se encontró fuera del teatro. Se puede decir que el pequeño está tan agradecido por haber sido rescatado y ama mucho a su nueva familia. “Lo mejor de estar aquí es que mi esposo y yo nos encanta vivir a todo color. Intentamos mantenernos al día con el arte local. Tenemos un poco de Francine, tenemos un poco de Jorge, tenemos algunos maravillosos artistas del Malecón. Tratamos de no comprar muchas cosas producidas en masa”.
Como muchos en nuestra comunidad, a Brian le fue difícil crecer siendo gay. “Crecí muy acosado, muy burlado. Siempre he sido un niño grande y siempre he sido muy extravagante, por lo que fue difícil para mí no ser “gay”. La gente ha sido cruel toda mi vida y fue duro”. Sin embargo, no permitió que eso le impidiera ser él mismo. “Lo que me ayudó fue el tipo de pensamiento de que pase lo que pase, al diablo con las personas. Vales la pena, mereces amor, mereces ser feroz, mereces ser tú mismo”. Mamá Tetas incluso tiene un famoso dicho en su show: “Celebra quién eres, y si las personas que te rodean no lo aprecian, ¡arrójalos frente a uno de los autobuses aquí en Vallarta! ¡Porque los atropellarán tantas veces como sea necesario!”

Veronica Olivares Ramirez
Veronica is originally from Los Altos de Jalisco but has been living in Puerto Vallarta for 16 years. She established her business on the corner of Olas Altas and Rodolfo Gómez and she has been in that same corner ever since. In 2003, a few lesbian couples arrived at Vallarta with the purpose of opening businesses in this area, with one of them ladies being Veronica herself. They opened two bars across the street from what is now Verona restaurant. One of them was called The Palm - which is now the cabaret. It was a place for women, so this place was meant to be a meeting point for lesbians. The then owners of The Palm eventually moved out of town so it is no longer owned and operated by lesbians, and it was converted to a full-time cabaret. Veronica on the other hand, she originally opened a money exchange business on this corner. This venture lasted for a while until Veronica decided to open a 32

restaurant. Verona was born about four years ago and originally it was Italian cuisine, then just a few months ago, she wanted to innovate and decided to make the change to seafood. “Our menu is specifically made for Verona. We hired a chef to create a special menu for us. The idea was to offer something different in this area, since there are a lot of restaurants that offer similar stuff, so I was looking to bring a combination of what the bay itself offers which is seafood but made in a healthy way. It is a mix of various ingredients like Asian and Hawaiian.” When asked about the food at Verona, she recommends the lobster and Tuna Tataki, but she says that if you’re hung over and need to revive after a night of partying, then she suggests the aguachile. According to Veronica, the lesbian community in Puerto Vallarta is big. “In fact, our restaurant also welcomes lesbians and is a place for
them to meet up, have dinner, and have a good time.” “I encourage everyone to visit us and try our cuisine because it is an option of incredible flavors and ingredients, and with unique dishes because they are unique recipes”

When did you first know you were gay? When I was ten years old I knew I was looking at guys in a “different” way, but in my head I was thinking it’s just a weird thing and it will pass... I didn’t see or accepted myself as a gay guy. Till I was 20 I was with girls and had a girlfriend for two years. During my last year in the army, I had my first experience with a guy. He was the chief of another unit in the army, we kept it as a secret for four months till I finished the army. When did you come out? How did that play out? How did people around you react? I came out right after the army. I told my mom first, in the beginning she didn’t understand what’s going on?! She never thought that I was gay and for her being gay is only the 34

Eliad Cohen is an actor, model and producer of PAPA Party. He grew up in a small town in the North of Israel. After serving three years as a combat operative in the Israeli Defense Forces, Eliad decided that it was time to pursue his dreams. While modeling and bartending in Tel Aviv, Eliad was scouted by the Spartacus International Guide. Every year the guide chooses one man to represent the brand internationally. Representing Spartacus, Eliad had the opportunity to travel around the world. Beginning in 2010, Eliad launched the PAPA PARTY in Tel Aviv. When are you coming back? I have been to Puerto Vallarta two times. The first time I came was for new years last year, I originally planned to stay for three days and I ended up staying for two weeks instead. I fell in love with this place, the people and the amazing energy, I had to change my flight like four
times, the airline company was thinking I’m crazy lol. I’m coming back in May third for Mantamar’s anniversary and three weeks after I’m coming back again for PV pride, looking forward to party with you all! How LGBT friendly was your town where you grew up? How did that affect you coming out or living your life as a gay man? I grew up in the north of Israel in a city called Akko. Being gay there it’s not something common. And by that I mean if someone is gay no one will hurt him, but people would laugh and it won’t look “normal” for them. When i was 18 I left my city to serve in the army and right after when I was 21 I moved to Tel Aviv - one of the most open minded cities in the world. People holding hands and kissing everywhere in the streets, restaurants and parties.
What advice would you give someone who is not proud of being gay due to society pressures? We live once, we can choose to make the people around us happy and live a fake life that doesn’t belong to us or we can live our truth and the people around us who really love us will be there with us.

Coming out of the closet was the best decision I’ve took in my life, I’m sure i wouldn’t do it I will be living completely different fake life that I never wanted.
What is your meaning of being proud (gay pride)? I think the world has changed so much in the last years and become so much more open minded and we did a long way with our gay rights but still we have more things to get done and I’m sure we will, cause together we are unstoppable.

Después de un tiempo ella lo aceptó y me dijo que me quería de la misma manera y si estoy feliz, ella es feliz por mí. The Drag Derby was an idea of Morgan Granader, owner of the Swedes, Javier Jimenez, owner of Garbo and Tom Swale, the former president of the Amapas Neighborhood Association (ANA). About five years ago, they took the idea of having a bunch of drag queens run up and down the Pulpito stairs to compete for glamour and prizes while people bet on which one would win. What started as a small and quirky but fun event had grown last year into a rather large production, with thousands of people attending. Different activities were added in addition to the “running of the drag queens” - such as trying to break a Donald Trump-shaped piñata. Notable people have emceed including Amy Armstrong and Betty BO5 (Alejandra Bogue). Last year over a dozen drag queens were brave enough to enter and run the derby (high heels required). Each year the Drag Derby’s profits were allocated to beautifying the Pulpito area including lighting the large tree and helping to renew the corner with Olas Altas with new planters, plants and lights. President Tom Swale’s untimely death last May cast the future of Drag Derby in doubt, as he had become the driving force behind this big event each year. However, the ANA pulled ourselves together and pulled off the event last year, while many of us were still in mourning. We knew Tom would have wanted the show to go on. Last summer, the ANA board realized the event had morphed more into a citywide, LGBTQ-focused event during gay pride, and the size of the event required professional event management. SETAC, Puerto Vallarta’s gay community health center, had helped with volunteers for many years with the event, and each year ANA donated a portion of the profits to SETAC. Last year, ANA agreed to transfer management of the event to SETAC beginning in 2019, but will continue to help with volunteers, permitting the event in the Amapas Neighborhood, and raising money for ANA with event entrance fees. SETAC has many ideas to make the Drag Derby even more exciting, with better production quality and more high-tech video enhancements, as well as amplifying ways to raise more money to support SETAC’s mission of caring for the health concerns of Vallarta’s LGBTQ community.

Drag Derby El Drag Derby fue idea de Morgan Granader, propietario de Swedes, Javier Jiménez, propietario de Garbo y Tom Swale, el ex presidente de la Asociación de Vecinos de Amapas (ANA). Hace unos cinco años, tomaron la idea de tener un grupo de drag queens corriendo para arriba y para abajo las escaleras del Pulpito para competir por el glamour y los premios, mientras que las personas apuestan a cuál ganaría. Lo que comenzó como un evento pequeño y peculiar pero divertido se había convertido el año pasado en una producción bastante grande, con miles de personas que asistieron. Se agregaron diferentes actividades además de la “la corredera de las drag queens”, como intentar romper una piñata en forma de Donald Trump. Personas notables han actuado como maestros de ceremonias, incluyendo a Amy Armstrong y Betty BO5 (Alejandra Bogue). El año pasado, más de una docena de drag queens fueron lo suficientemente valientes como para entrar y correr el derby (se requieren tacones altos).
